Apply now for top-up PhD and MPhil scholarships

Are you a research student looking to collaborate and enhance your project?

CSIRO’s Advanced Engineering Biology Future Science Platform (AEB FSP) is now seeking Expressions of Interest (EOIs) for PhD and Masters/MPhil top-up scholarships.

The opportunity

Engineering biology/synthetic biology has transformational potential for society, environments and industry.

There have been major advances in recent times around the large-scale generation of biological data and its interpretation using advanced computational methods, as well as the increased speed and precision of organism engineering and testing.

Consequently, there are many exciting research opportunities to transform how biology is understood, engineered, and used and how it can benefit society broadly.

Our focus at the AEB FSP is improving the way we collect and interpret data so engineering biology is faster and more predictive. It is transforming the productivity of engineered biological systems at the protein, organism and process levels, as well researching the potential impacts and benefits across society and environments.

Our science is delivered through three research themes where we are bringing together interdisciplinary teams across a range of complementary biophysical and social science areas to advance how engineering biology is researched and deployed. These include:

  • Data-driven molecular design
  • Innovative bioproduction platforms
  • Interdisciplinary decision-making

Guidelines for applicants

We are seeking EOIs from excellent, motivated research students where their capabilities (and/or that of their university research group) complements our research themes, extends CSIRO’s capabilities, and develops transformational engineering biology research.

High achieving research students should be within their first year of study (for PhD), first 6 months (for MPhil) or accepted to start before 30 th June 2023. Students will receive a scholarship top-up of $10K per annum and up to $15K per annum of operating funding.

To be considered for this opportunity, please discuss the project with the relevant theme leader and potential CSIRO supervisor and provide the following in a Word or PDF document:

  • Project title
  • Student name and academic institution
  • Supervisory team including university principal supervisor and CSIRO supervisor
  • Studentship start date
  • Name(s) of AEB FSP theme to which the project aligns
  • Details of the rationale for support (500 words max) – including alignment to the AEB FSP, project details (research questions, impact), quality of the student, research environment, and the CSIRO research capability that will be complemented.

More information

Prospective students should submit their EOI by email to Robert Speight by Friday 21 April 2023.

Feel free to contact Robert at the same email address if you have questions.

[Image changes back to show Thai Ly, postgraduate student, seated and talking to the camera]

Thai: So far the experience has been really rewarding. We get to see the ultimate outcome of what our project may lead to. And I was so excited that I get to work with a renowned company, analysing minerals in rocks, using nuclear magnetic resonance, which was what I really wanted to do in the first place.

[Image changes back to show Justin Delaney, postgraduate student, seated and talking to the camera]

Justin: My project is aimed at using high energy X-rays to measure the amount of gold and other precious metals in mineral ore samples. CSIRO have completely shattered my preconceptions of what research was and how research was conducted. Being only really exposed to it in a University and academic sphere, it was really eye opening to see how some real world research is actually conducted and then applied to something that is useful.

[Image changes back to show Kallol Krishna Karmakar, postgraduate student, seated and talking to the camera

Kallol: My work has two phases. The first phase is to build a policy base security model to secure the IOT network space. The second phase comes with the introduction of how to identify malicious flows from the IOT network devices. In a lot of ways CSIRO is helping me to build my career in this cyber-security world and in this Australian context, I think, CSIRO is the bestest spot to work with.

[Image changes back to show Justin Delaney, seated and talking to the camera]

Justin: Working with CSIRO has opened up a lot of opportunities for me that I feel I wouldn’t have otherwise had access to in a University, where a lot of it is very laboratory based and you don’t tend to do anything more than that.

[Image changes back to show Thai, seated and talking to the camera]

Thai: The culture in CSIROs actually extremely relaxed, more relaxed than I thought it would be.

Justin: Everyone is just a fountain of information on anything you might want and they’re always ready to help you if you have questions, or if you need help conducting experimental work.

[Image changes back to show Kallol Krishna Karmakar, seated and talking to the camera

Kallol: It’s very friendly. They gave me the tools and they gave me some introductions as well, how to do the work, from there on I started working.

Justin: I would very strongly recommend doing projects with CSIRO; it’s been a really enriching experience in just all aspects of the project.

Thai: Everyone just encourages you to learn to read, to experiment and just see where your motivation takes you, I guess (laughs).

Justin: If I could sum up my experience with CSIRO in one word, it would be engaging.

Thai: If I could think of one word that would sum up my experience at CSIRO, it would be rewarding.

[Image changes back to show Kallol, seated and talking to the camera

Kallol: If I could think of one word that would sum up my experience is excellent. I love working with CSIRO.

Requirements and eligibility of a Postgraduate Scholarship

Scholarships will be offered to high achieving postgraduate students who are enrolled at an Australian university.

Recipients of postgraduate scholarships are generally required to be Australian Citizens or hold Permanent Residency status. However, in fields in which there is a national skill shortage, scholarships may be awarded to overseas candidates, provided they meet Department of Immigration and Citizenship policy guidelines. International students must be able to provide evidence of admission to an Australian university.

Dhyey Shah

PhD Student, UNSW Graduate School of Biomedical Engineering Recipient of LEAP Engineering Ambassador Scholarship

What made me want to start a HDR program after completing my undergraduate dual degree was the fact I love the atmosphere UNSW creates. I felt comfortable, I felt accepted, and I felt continuing my studies at UNSW was conducive to me improving both as an academic and student in research, and as a person. Everything was in place for me to stay here and pursue a PhD in something I’m really passionate about.

My scholarship is an Engineering Research Ambassador Award, which involves putting my best foot forward as an ambassador of Higher Degree Research. It has given me the freedom to dip my toes into a lot of areas beyond my research, which has broadened my understanding of the bigger picture and the opportunities available to me.

PhD Student, UNSW School of Civil and Environmental Engineering Recipient of LEAP Engineering Ambassador Scholarship

Although, I know some students who always knew they wanted to go into academia and started to consider those pathways as an undergraduate, for me it was a little different. After my bachelor, I worked in industry for a few years before deciding to come back to do a PhD. Doing my own research gives me a sense of ownership, as it can be my own liberated space where I can pursue what I am passionate about.

Doing a PhD is helping me to improve my skills in independent problem solving and communicating my research to a non-technical audience. Being encouraged to try new solutions is enabling me to become an expert in my field.
