'Pogaru' movie review: A treat for Dhruva Sarja fans

Pogaru is a battlefield of emotions and Dhruva Sarja shines in this unique script. The three years of hard work for the film by the actor and director Nanda Kishore pays off on the screen and the massive expectation of fans is met.

The story of Pogaru is mostly told by the protagonist, Shiva, a local youth whose bitter childhood makes him 'notorious'. Shiva longs for his deceased father and his only weakness is his mother (Pavithra Lokesh). He goes all out to get her attention and love, but all his attempts backfire.

However, an incident takes place between him and his sister (Mayuri), which becomes the turning point in his life, and there is a drastic change in his behaviour. How Shiva becomes a messiah to the people living in his neighbourhood, and how it affects them forms the rest of the story.

Director Nanda Kishore has weaved a 'mass' film with the right family elements. There is the usual melodrama, but the filmmaker has used his creative freedom wisely and delivered a mix of emotions. The narrative, however, tends to be one-sided, mostly depicted from the hero's perspective. 

Nanda Kishore's experiment in sketching a new character for Dhruva Sarja is largely successful. As the ruffian, the actor comfortably sails through his role and does a great job of engaging the audience from start to end. His schoolboy avatar, for which he lost 33 kilograms, looks flawless.

His transformation to the young look definitely merits appreciation. Certain action sequences of Dhruva remind us of his uncle Arjun Sarja. Dhruva has also made sure that his usual lengthy dialogue scenes are present in this film to cater to his fans.

Even though this is a bit too over-the-top at times, the actor keeps it entertaining. He has also worked hard to get the details of his look right. Watch out for Dhruva's much-awaited face-off with the four international bodybuilders in the climax as well. 

Rashmika Mandanna, who plays Dhruva's love interest, does justice to her role, and Ravi Shankar, who is famous for his villainous roles, is a surprise in Pogaru. Dhananjay, Mayuri, and Sampath, meanwhile, do not have much scope to perform.

The songs by Chandan Shetty, especially the Karaabu song and the title track Notorious stand out. The background by V Harikrishna lifts the scenes and adds the required mass appeal. Cinematographer Vijay Milton's work aligns with the director's greater vision.

Overall, Pogaru is a treat for Dhruva's fans, who value his hard work and celebrate his onscreen presence.

After almost a year, a big film in Kannada has hit the screens. Dhruva Sarja and Rashmika Mandanna's Pogaru is released on Friday, 19 February. Nanda Kishore-directorial flick is an out-and-out commercial entertainer with an overdose of action and dialogues.

Story: Shiva (Dhruva Sarja) grows up at an ashram. His mother and step-father hide the news of his father's passing away. When he realises the truth he becomes a stone-hearted person and starts hating his step-father. He believes there is no place for love and empathy in the world and becomes a selfish person. There is no place for emotions in his heart and like in usual commercial potboilers, he is not the kind of a guy who changes once falling in love. So, what is the story all about? You need to find the answers in a nearby cinema hall.

The Review & Rating It is a regular template film made in a commercial format. There is action, sentiments and songs, etc. Nanda Kishore well-establishes Dhruva Sarja's character to showcase him as a brash and arrogant person. Unfortunately, the director's idea of heroism is all about hyper-masculinity and machismo. A big thumbs down for the way the female lead's character is treated in the film. Rashmika Mandanna , despite her limited appearance, performs well.

The biggest disappointment in the film is the poor characterisation of the antagonist. It is quite shocking how a power-house talent Dhananjay accepted such a role without meat in the character. Sampath Raj's look like a weak villain and the foreign body-builders are wasted. Even Raghavendra Rajkumar's character makes little or no impact. However, Pavitra Lokesh and P Ravishankar have done justice to their roles. 

In the technical departments, Chandan Shetty 's two songs have struck the chord with the viewers. His background is good. Vijay Milton's cinematography needs a special mention. The action sequences and dance choreography are good.

On the flip side, the content has everything, yet fails to hold the attention. It is a flat story without twists and turns. The run-time needs a trimming. Overall, Dhruva Sarja  stuns the viewers with his physical transformation, maturity in acting, dance and fights.

Overall, it is a film tailor-made for the fans of action movies. Ratings:   2.5

Pogaru Movie Review: Mass drama based on old formula

Pogaru was touted as one of the most expected films from Sandalwood this year for the simple reason that both Dhruva Sarja and director Nanda Kishore took almost a year to make this 'exclusive' project. Dhruva Sarja's Pogaru tries to replicate time-tested mother-son sentimental drama as it portrays protagonist Shiva (Dhruva Sarja) leading a fearless life. The director goes overboard in casting the hero in the mould of a mass character. Dhruva Sarja spends too much time mouthing mass dialogues as he takes too much screen space looking like a ruffian.

The film opens with the murder of a man as his young son Shiva (Dhruva Sarja) waits for his return. Shiva's mother Lakshmi (Pavithra Lokesh) is compelled to get into a second marriage with Ramakrishna (Ravi Shankar), a government official and father of a month-old daughter from his first marriage. The director gives a twist here. Lakshmi keeps her second marriage a secret from her son for 10 years by giving the impression that Ramakrishna is a family friend.  Shiva grows up in a residential school, missing his mother's love. Shiva never forgives her mother for marrying another man after his father’s murder and this sets the tone for the rest of the story. The director struggles to portray Dhruva Sarja in every frame as an impetuous young man in line with the title Pogaru leaving the audience without any doubt about the denouement of the story.

Shiva grows up to be a violent person living life on his own terms without worrying about people around him. Director Nanda Kishore tries to deliver some romance and sister sentiment in the first half, without much success as the title of the film doesn’t allow him the freedom. Rashmika as the female lead who appears as a teacher ends up as a showpiece. What happens when Shiva gets emotional with his sister (Mayuri Kyatari) and how he acts when the residents' lives are at risk form the substance of the second half.

Dhruva Sarja carries forward his masculine appearance in Pogaru and sticks to his 'signature style' mass looks, delivering lengthy punch dialogues which appears unnecessary. The main villain played by Sampath Raj appears only in a few scenes, as the hero tries to engage the audience with his lengthy dialogues.    

As Pogaru turns out to be Dhruva's one-man show, the director leaves little space for other characters like Dhananjaya, Rashmika, Kuri Prathap.

Overall, the film is overloaded with typical Dhruva stuff meant only for mass audience. The film features four top bodybuilders and models Kai Greene, Morgan Aste, Wayne Lucas and Jo Lindner in the climax fight. The concept of using top bodybuilders in climax fights hardly adds any value to the film except perhaps as a promotional. Music by Chandan Shetty is also disappointing.

Technically, Pogaru looks very rich in every frame and thanks to cinematographer Vijay Milton and childhood flashback episode that shows the Dhruva Sarja in a physical transformation as a teenager will definitely be remembered by the audience.

Even after the movie is over, Dhruva Sarja’s voice is echoing in my head and haunting me as I write this.  Pogaru is about an irresponsible youngster named Shiva (Dhruva Sarja) who separates from his mother because she remarried and is waiting for her to come back to him. 

The story, screenplay and characterisations are all age-old and already seen in so many South Indian films. Dhruva Sarja is full of energy but his look is scary to say the least and it was quite difficult to see him that way for the entire 150 minutes though the look suits his character in the film. The Telugu/Tamil most awaited blockbuster highlight of early 2021 (Tamil aka. 'Sema Thimiru') turns out to be a pretty mindless macho piece of south Indian testosterone.

The two powerful main theme songs got me hooked like everyone else, I guess, but the film in itself lacks in narration and plot. There is some good camerawork, but it gets outbalanced by endless dialogues, that want to be fast and cunning - but so fast it gets tiring. And most times, there's not much to come out of it. I watched it in 2x speed, still the movie was unbearabley slow.

Kannada filmmaker Prashanth Neel reviews  Pogaru r

Action Prince Dhruva Sarja’s Kollywood film Pogaru  has taken the box office by storm ever since its release on February 19. Having prolific Sandalwood filmmaker Nanda Kishore at its helm, Pogaru  stars Rashmika Mandanna as the female lead alongside Dhruva. After garnering massive appreciation by the viewers as well several South Indian celebrities, the Dhruva and Rashika film has now received a thumbs up from the KGF director, Prashanth Neel.

Almost a week after the film's release, Prashanth took to his Twitter handle to shower the film and team Pogaru with heaps of praise. He tweeted:

About ' Pogaru '

Alongside Dhruva Sarja and Rashmika Mandanna, Pogaru cast also stars Chikkanna, P. Ravi Shankar, Pavitra Lokesh and  Raghavendra Rajkumar in pivotal roles. Furthermore, actors Sampath Raj, Kai Greene, Dhananjay, Morgan Aste and Dharma play antagonists in Pogaru . Director Nanda Kishore has also written the screenplay of the action thriller drama while it is bankrolled by B. K. Gangadhar.

The film was simultaneously shot in both Telugu and Kannada languages. The dubbed version of the film in Tamil was also released on the big screen on Feb 19, under the title  Semma Thimiru. For the unversed, the film was earlier slated to release back in March 2020, but its release date was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
