1}Caracter's Sketch

1}Caracter Sketch

The guru was a very wise man who never succumbed to any temptation. He flattered the king with false praise and obtained the freedom of both his disciple and the kingdom. He earns readers’ appreciation for his intelligence and presence of mind.

The disciple was a simple but greedy fellow. He followed his guru everywhere and listened to him. However, once he could not resist the temptation of good and cheap food available. He did not pay heed to his guru's warning and stayed back.

The king was a fool who owned a beautiful kingdom. He could go to any length in order to be different from others. His orders were foolish and his ideas stupid. Turning day into night and ordering execution of those who disobeyed are examples of his silliness.

The minister was equal partner in the foolish orders passed by the king. The king consulted him on different matters but the minister could never give any accurate advice. He was a dumb character who was responsible for his own death.

2}About The Kingdom

@ About the kingdom...

It was a beautiful city,it was a sunny day but they could not find anyone around,They were surprised.Everyone was asleep and there not a mouse was stirring, even the tiniest creatures were asleep. The people had also taught their cattle to sleep during day time. So everyone- human as well as animals were sleeping.

@ Guru and Disciple visits a Shop...

Guru and Disciple saw the tranquil state of the kingdom and were amazed of the changes made by the ruler. So,the two men were hungry. Now that the shops were open, they went to buy some groceries. To their astonishment, they found that everything cost the same, a single duddu — whether they bought a measure of rice or a bunch of bananas, it cost a duddu. So,the guru realized that this was a kingdom of fools and it wouldn’t be a good idea for them to stay there. So,the guru left the kingdom. But,his disciple was greedy for cheap things,he refused to leave the kingdom.

The merchant

The merchant:-He was pronounced guilty because in his house the wall was weak. So,It fell upon the burglar and killed him.

The bricklayer

The bricklayer:-He had built a wall in the merchant's house which was weak and it collapsed, killing the burglar.

The Dancing girl

The dancing girl:-She was tried for distracting the bricklayer with her jingling anklets by walking up and down the road where bricklayer was laying the wall.

The Theif:-He was responsible for the entire circumstances happenedbecause stealing is a sin. But,his brother went to the court and said merchant was responsible for the theif's death.

The Gold Smith

The Goldsmith:-He was very poor man and he kept delaying and making excuses to the dancing girl.He said that it was because there was a wedding in a rich merchant's house and he had to complete their order quickly

The king then came to the conclusion that the goldsmith should be punished and summoned him. But when he was summoned to the court he in turn shifted the whole blame on to the merchant’s father who pressurised him for completing his order first due to which he (the goldsmith) could not complete the girl's order in time.

Then the king came to know that the merchant was to who was on the blame, his son was none other than the merchant whose house was plundered. So,the king gave the statement that the merchant should be hanged because he had inherited his father's wealth has also inherited his father's criminal sins. So,the king ordered the merchant should be executed.

4}The disciple and the stake

the minister felt that the merchant was very thin and he could not be executed in this way. He told this to the king and king got worried.“What shall we do?” he said, when suddenly it struck him that all they needed to do was to find a man fat enough to fit the stake. The king got an idea that they should catch hold of a man who was fat enough to be executed with the stake. The merchant would not be put to death because he was too thin to be executed with a stake. They thought of punishing another person instead of the merchant - one who was fat enough to be executed with a stake. The servants were immediately sent all over the town looking for a man who would fit the stake, and their eyes fell on the disciple who had fattened himself for months on bananas and rice and wheat and ghee.

Then they came to him and apprehended him.he said;“WHAT HAVE I DONE WRONG? I’M INNOCENT. I’M A SANYASI!” HE CRIED. “THAT MAY BE TRUE. BUT IT’S THE ROYAL DECREE THAT WE SHOULD FIND A MAN FAT ENOUGH TO FIT THE STAKE,” THEY SAID, AND CARRIED HIM TO THE PLACE OF EXECUTION.HE REMEMBERED HIS WISE GURU’S WORDS: “THIS IS A CITY OF FOOLS. YOU DON’T KNOW What they will do.The helpless disciple prayed to his guru and asked him to come to his rescue. The Guru could visualize the disciple’s message due to his magical power. He could see everything. He could see the future, the present and the past, he could see everything in the vision.

When the guru and disciple started arguing that who would die first, the king got confused. He asked the guru that why did he want to die. They had caught the disciple because he was fat and they wanted a fat man who could be executed with the stake.

The guru refused to reply. He said that he wanted to die befoore his disciple died.“Why? There’s some mystery here;As a wise man you must make me understand.”The king felt that there was some mystery behind it. The guru wanted to die before his disciple and was so eager to die. There must be some reason behind it.“Will you promise to put me to death if I tell you?” asked the guru. The guru asked the king to promise him that he would execute him first if he told him the secret about why he wanted to be executed first. The king gave him his solemn word. The guru took him aside, out of the servants’ earshot, and whispered to him, “Do you know why we want to die right now, the two of us? We’ve been all over the world but we’ve never found a city like this or a king like you. That stake is the stake of the god of justice. It’s new, it has never had a criminal on it.The one who would die next would be reborn as the minister of the kingdom. The guru added that he was tired of the life of a sanyasi. He and his disciple wanted to live the life of a king and a minster. So he says that the king execute him first so that he is reborn as a king and after him, his disciple be executed so that he is reborn as a minister.

After listening to the guru, the king was in deep thought. He did not want that in the next life, his kingdom be snatched away from him. He discussed this with his minister.“It’s not right for us to give over the kingdom to others in the next life. Let’s go on the stake ourselves and we’ll be reborn as king and minister again. Holy men do not tell lies,” he said, and the minister agreed. He added that the person was a holy man and holy men did not speak lies. He says that they should die first so that they are reborn as king and minister of the kingdom. So he told the executioners, “We’ll send the criminals tonight. When the first man comes to you, put him to death first. Then do the same to the second man. Those are my orders. Don’t make any mistake.”The king told his executioners that he would send the criminals at night. Firstly, they should execute the person who came first and then execute the second person. They should be careful and not make any mistake.

At night, the king and his minister went to the prison where the guru and his disciple were kept. They wore the clothes of the guru and his disciple so that they resembled them. As it was told to the servants, they came and took them along and put them into the stake for execution. In this way, with his intelligence, the guru was able to execute his foolish king and his foolish minister.

When the dead bodies of then king and his minster were taken away, to be thrown, the people trembled to see the dead bodies of their king and his minister. The city was in confusion.Everyone was trembling because the dead bodies were not of the guru and his disciple, instead they were the bodies of the king and his minister. All night, they mourned and discussed the future of the kingdom.

In the morning, some people thought of the guru and his disciple and felt that they should go to them. As the guru and his disciple were planning to leave the kingdom, the people stopped them. The people of the kingdom thought that they needed a king and a minister and so,they requested the guru and his disciple to be the new king and minister of the kingdom. It didn’t take many arguments to persuade the disciple, but it took longer to persuade the guru. They finally agreed to rule the kingdom of the foolish king and the silly minister, on the condition that they could change all the old laws. From then on, night would again be night and day would again be day, and you could get nothing for a duddu. It became like any other place. Finally, the guru converted the kingdom of fools into a normal kingdom.

The story is based on the theme that foolish people are unpredictable and can be very dangerous. So, one must stay away from the even if they offer benefit for some time. The disciple got tempted by the availability of all items for one duddu each and stayed in the Kingdom of Fools in spite of warning by his wise guru.

Theme of the story:-

MORAL:-THE STORY IS A FOLKTALE AND GIVES TWO MESSAGES.*THE FIRST MESSAGE IS THAT ONE SHOULD STAY AWAY FROM FOOLISH PEOPLE; ELSE ONE IS BOUND TO SUFFER.*THE SECOND MESSAGE IS THAT IN ORDER TO TACKLE FOOLISH PEOPLE ONE SHOULD EMPLOY WISDOM AND NOT LOGIC.

CBSE Class 9 English In the Kingdom of Fools Summary

In the Kingdom of Fools is a famous Kannada folktale adapted from A.K. Ramanujan’s ‘Folk Tales from India’. This interesting story is about a kingdom that was ruled by a silly king and his foolish ministers. He, along with his ministers, ordered the people of the kingdom to consider night as day and day as night. They would sleep all day long and perform their daily tasks during the night.

One fine day, a guru and his disciple visited the kingdom and were surprised about the reverse rules set by the king and his ministers. They were astonished to find out that everything in the kingdom cost a single rupee only. The guru and his disciple were happy initially as they could buy anything by just spending a rupee. However, the guru understood that it was not a wise decision to stay in a kingdom of fools, so he left. His disciple was unwilling to leave the kingdom because of the ready availability of good food at a reasonable rate. He was a foodie; he ate plenty of food and grew fat in a matter of a few days.

One day, a thief broke into the house of a rich merchant. He made a huge hole in the wall and sneaked in. While he was returning with the stolen items, the wall of the house collapsed on his head, killing him instantly. However, the thief’s brother approached the king and complained to him that the house owner (merchant) should be punished for not building a strong wall. The king immediately summoned the merchant to his court.

When the merchant arrived, he blamed the bricklayer for building a weak wall. The bricklayer, an old man, was called to the king’s court and pleaded with the king to punish the dancing girl for distracting his attention from work as she went to and fro that street all day wearing jingling anklets. The dancing girl, who had become old now, blamed the goldsmith. He had delayed his work and made her walk up and down that street several times. Soon, the goldsmith was brought into the king’s court, who said that he was busy attending to a rich merchant’s orders at that time due to some wedding rituals in his family.

It was, therefore, ruled out that this merchant was the same house owner whose wall had collapsed on the burglar. The merchant pleaded that his father was the one who ordered the jewellery, and he was dead already. But, the king decided to punish the merchant for his father’s deeds. A new stake was ordered to proceed with the execution. However, the merchant was extremely thin to fit the execution stake. So, the king ordered him to search for a fat man to fit the stake. The king’s men searched the entire kingdom and found the disciple as an ideal fit for the stake. But as he was innocent, he pleaded with the king not to punish him for others’ deeds. Since it was a kingdom of fools, no one listened to him.

Waiting for his execution, the disciple then remembered his guru’s words and requested him to help him. His guru, who was blessed with magical powers, could see his disciple’s condition in his vision. At once, he arrived to save his disciple. He quietly whispered some words in his disciple’s ears. Then, he requested the king to punish him instead of his disciple. However, when the disciple heard this, he requested the king to put the stake on him as he was brought there for execution first.

Puzzled about who should die first, the king asked to resolve the conflict. The guru dubiously told him that whoever would die on the stake first would be reborn as the future king of that kingdom. The one who died next would become the key minister of the kingdom. The king was baffled and did not want to lose his kingdom to someone else in the subsequent life. So, he had a discussion with his minister and finally concluded that they should go on the stake to continue being the king and minister in the next life. That night, they secretly went to the prison and set free the guru along with his disciple.

The next morning, the king and his minister, who disguised themselves as the guru and his disciple, were executed. When the people of the kingdom saw that the king, along with his ministers, were executed, they made the guru and his disciple their king and minister, respectively. Although the guru was hesitant initially, he finally gave in and reversed the rules of the kingdom, and the people began leading a normal life like other kingdoms.

In the Kingdom of Fools Introduction The above story is a Kannada folktale taken from A. K. Ramanujan’s ‘Folk Tales from India’. The story is all about a kingdom of fools. This kingdom is ruled by a foolish king and his foolish ministers. Once they ordered that night should be considered as day and vice versa.

In the Kingdom of Fools

In the Kingdom of Fools Summary of the Lesson

There was a kingdom of fools. In this kingdom both the king and the minister were idiots. They reversed everything and denied justice to their people. They changed day into night and night into day. They ordered their people to sleep during day and work only after dark. Anyone who disobeyed this order would be put to death. The people did accordingly.

One day, two men, a guru and his disciple visited the kingdom and found everything reverse. They were surprised to see people sleep in the broad daylight. And when darkness spread, everyone became active.

Their surprise doubled when they went to the market and found that everything cost the same, a single judge. The guru and his disciples were happy because the system allowed them to buy all the food they wanted for a rupee.

The guru was a wise person. He told his disciples that it would not be safe for them to stay in the kingdom of fools. But the disciple was not ready to leave the place because good and cheap food was available there. So, the guru left the kingdom and the disciple stayed on. Being a great foodie, he ate his fill every day and became fat in a few days.

One day, a thief broke into a rich merchant’s house by making a big hole in the wall. But as he was going out with the stolen things, the wall of the old house collapsed on his head and killed him on the spot. The brother of the thief came running to the king and pleaded him to punish the merchant for not building a good and strong wall. The merchant was brought before the king.

The king heard the case and found him (merchant) guilty of the thief s spot death. But the merchant put the blame on the bricklayer who had built the wall. The merchant blamed his father who had ordered the jewelry. But the father was no more in this world, so it was decided to punish the merchant in his place. A new stake was ordered to be ready for the execution.

But the merchant was too thin to fit the stake. So, a fat man was searched for. The servant’s eyes fell on the disciple who had flattened himself for months on bananas and rice and wheat and ghee. He pleaded the king that he was innocent but of no use. While he was waiting for death, he remembered his guru who saw everything in his vision. He was blessed with magic powers.

He arrived at once to save his disciple. He whispered something in his disciple’s ears. Then he requested the king to put him to the stake first. When the disciple heard this, he said that he was brought there first, so he should be put to death first.

The king was surprised to see the fight between the guru and his disciple over the issue of who should be executed first. When the king asked them the reason, the guru hesitatingly told him that whoever died on the stake first, would be reborn as the king of that country.

The one who died next would be the minister of that country. The king was puzzled. He did not want to lose the kingdom to someone else in the next life. After all the trials, the king decided that the merchant is the real culprit and he decided to punish him. The stake designed for the punishment was not suitable for the merchant who was too thin so the King decided to let him go and punish the man who is fat and fits in the stake.

The king's men searched for the fat man for the punishment and he found that the guru's disciple who had become fat, fits for the punishment. That time he remembered his guru's wise words that these people are fools and unpredictable, it could be dangerous.

He remembers his guru who saw everything by his vision; the guru then arrived in the kingdom and created a drama. The guru told the king that this stake has some special power. Whoever punished first on this would be the king in his next life and the second one will be his minister so first punish me and then my disciple

After guru's words the king was surprised and decided to hold the punishment and later discussed all this with his minister. Later they secretly freed the guru and his disciple and executed themselves. The people now made the guru and his disciples their king and minister.

Q. What are the two strange things the guru and his disciple find in the Kingdom of Fools?

Ans. The guru and his disciple found two strange things in the kingdom of fools: people of the kingdom used to work at nights and sleep during days even animals were trained to do like that. Moreover everything was cheap and of the same cost i.e. a single duddu in the kingdom.

Q.   Why does the disciple decide to stay in the Kingdom of Fools? Is it a good idea?

Ans. The disciple was a foodie and he loves to eat food. In the kingdom of fools everything was cheap and at the same cost. That's why the disciple decided to stay in the kingdom. It was not a good idea to stay there because staying somewhere where people are fools and can behave unpredictably could be dangerous for him.

Q.   Name all the people who are tried in the king's court and give the reasons for their trial.

Ans. In the king's court the merchant, the bricklayer, the dancing girl and the goldsmith were tried. They all were tried because a thief died by the wall collapsing of the merchant's house. The wall built was weak, that's why the merchant and the bricklayer were tried. During wall building, the dancing girl tried to disturb the bricklayer and the dancing girl was disturbed by the goldsmith. That's why all the people were tried in the King's court.

Q.   Who is the real culprit according to the king? Why does he escape punishment?

Ans. The real culprit according to the king was the merchant who was the son of the man who was responsible for building the weak wall. He escaped from the punishment because he was too thin to fit the stake.

Q.   What are the guru's words of wisdom? When does the disciple remember them?

Ans. The gurus' words of wisdom were, "they are fools this won't last very long and you can't tell what they will do to you next." The disciple was arrested by the king’s men and was about to be brutally executed and at that time he remembered guru's words of wisdom.

Q.   How does the Guru manage to save his disciple's life?

Ans. At the time of punishment the guru arrived and told the king that it is not an ordinary stake and that whoever went to the stake first would be the king in his next life and the second one will be his minister. By creating such a drama guru manages to save his disciples life.

Q.   What is the moral of the story?

Ans. The moral of a story is you should never trust foolish people and for a good administration smart people are needed.

Fallout's Vault 4 Holds the Key to the Series' Future

We demand more freaky little guys.

Fallout's Vault 4 Holds the Key to the Series' Future - IGN Image

This article contains spoilers for Fallout on Prime Video. If you haven't checked it out yet, check out our spoiler free piece: Fallout needs to keep the wasteland weird !

With all due respect to the Brotherhood of Steel and the bedraggled remnants of the New California Republic, the Fallout series is just more fun when we’re hanging out with some freaky little guys. I had my fingers crossed going into Prime Video’s series that showrunners Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Graham Wagner would follow through on their promise to embrace the weirder side of Fallout, and our visit to Vault 4 and its eclectic community of mutants was a big step in the right direction.

But Vault 4 is more than just a stop on Lucy and Maximus’s path to justice. How the Fallout show deals with mutants is also a neat little Rosetta Stone for what the series is willing to do to carve out its own space in Fallout canon. And better yet, it’s also a harbinger of the types of factions we might see in future seasons of the show .

In Episode 6, we accompany Lucy (Ella Purnell) and Maximus (Aaron Moten) in their detour to Vault 4, where they find an idyllic community of Shady Sands survivors and mutants. At first, everything seems wonderful, and Lucy is able to convince Maximus to accept his surroundings and enjoy the creature comforts available to him. But before long, Lucy’s curiosity gets the better of her, and she takes an unauthorized trip to Sector 12 where she finds the – bum bum bum – horrible secret behind Vault 4.

Or at least, so she thinks. The big twist of the arc – revealed in full in Episode 7 – is that Vault 4 has been fully reclaimed by the descendents of genetic testing. They are exactly as they appear on the tin: a friendly group of survivors who look after each other through thick and thin. While they might banish Lucy and Maximus to the surface world — I mean, they’re not monsters – they also give them two weeks of supplies and a courier to help them carry it to the surface.

It’s a great detour, and a wonderful showcase for both Chris Parnell – at his most Chris Parnell-ish – and Palestinian writer-director Cherien Dabis, who steps in front of the camera (and completely sells both the set-up and resolution of the story). But this one storyline is more than just a diversion: it tells us an awful lot about where the Fallout show could be heading and how the showrunners will handle that all-important balance of comedy and drama.

Don’t Hate, Mutate

Setting aside creatures like ghouls and super mutants – more on that in a second – human mutations are a somewhat rare occurrence in the Fallout universe. Yes, if you play enough games in the franchise, you will find a community or two cursed by their proximity to an atomic blast, but given the high levels of radiation in the wasteland, these outcomes are surprisingly scarce. Most of the (organic) humanoids you encounter in the wasteland fall into neat little buckets, and there is very little crossover between humans and their ghoul counterparts.

In fact, most mutations players will encounter are the ones they do to themselves. In Fallout 3, you can choose perks when you level up that give your character mutation-flavored benefits. These benefits are made even more explicit in Fallout 76, Bioware’s underrated MMO-lite set in post-war Appalachia. Want to grow talons or give off a blast of radiation when you’re hit at close range? Absorb enough rads and you, too, can harness the power of unnatural selection!

So a community of obvious mutants – as well as Maximus’s comments that mutants are common in the wasteland – is a nice little twist on the Fallout formula. Why does that matter for the future of the franchise? Two reasons.

The most obvious hook, of course, is that Vault 4 suggests a willingness to explore super mutants in future seasons of the show. Super mutants are one of the greatest threats – and, in a few cases, some of the great heroes – of the wasteland, the result of ongoing efforts to genetically engineer a race of post-humans who could thrive aboveground in the aftermath of the Great War. If you’ve tangled with a super mutant in your campaigns, you probably have the save points to show for it, and the presentation of practical power armor gives us hope that Fallout’s production crew will also emphasize practical character design with super mutants.

If you’re a retired basketball player or an actor over seven feet tall, now is the time to have your agent check in with the Fallout casting department. Seriously. The series finale even has a scene during the “corporate council” where the West-Tek representative daydreams about using their assigned vault to create a race of super mutants. There’s foreshadowing, and then there’s the showrunners blatantly calling their shot. Super mutants are definitely happening.

Jokes With a Half-Life

But Vault 4 also shows the creative team’s willingness to take bigger swings when it comes to Fallout lore. For the most part, Fallout remains relatively grounded in a few human factions and the evil manipulation of a handful of Vault-Tec characters. Vault 4 gives the showrunners an opportunity to lean into the absurd side of the wasteland without overtly compromising the aboveground world they’ve created. It’s an impressive balancing act for creators, one that demonstrates that they have a vision for what California (and beyond) would look like, but they’re going to dial up the humor and color whenever and wherever possible.

Narratively, Vault 4 offers Lucy a valuable lesson about her own prejudices and the types of people who came before her – and Fallout never misses an opportunity to develop those narratives in tandem, using pre-war Cooper Howard, Vault 33, and modern-day Lucy to slowly unfurl the Fallout canon before us. But Vault 4 also reminds us that the mutations and rituals of the future, while alien to some, are more commonplace than factions like the Brotherhood of Steel and Vault-Tec would have us believe.

The existence of mutants – hell, the flourishing of mutants – in the Fallout show promises more colorful communities, more mutated threats on the horizon, and a willingness to improvise on the source material. Perhaps in delving a little bit more into mutations, Prime Video’s Fallout can circle back around to the kinds of post-apocalyptic movies that inspired the franchise in the first place. And at the very least, Fallout seems poised to unleash some of the fiercest super mutant warriors of the wasteland on our poor unsuspecting souls. Guard Dogmeat with your life, fools.
