Sports accompany our lives for thousands of years. It is not possible to say precisely when the sport originated, but it is estimated that the first indications of sport activities date back to ancient times where the Olympics originated. At the beginning people knew only basic sports such as athletics and football. Nowadays we know hundreds of different kinds of sports which were created in sequence in thousands years.

One of the fundamental breakdowns of sport is dividing it between individual and collective kinds of sports activities. As well as in individual sport also in team sport we are faced with major obstacles, hard work, hours spent in training but all these challenging workouts bring us success at the end. In this blog, I decided to bring positive and negative aspects, which entail collective species.

Advantages of team sports

Each team sport conceals a large number of positive points that are useful for every player, whether in sports performance or even in personal life. One of the big positives of team sports, as the name implies is a collective. Unlike individual sports, the player in team sport can rely on his teammates when he is not doing well. Players can rely on each other and complement each other in sporting activities, as each player excels in something different. Teammates may also be the motivators for players who would like to quit with sport. Mainly a collective can be the main reason why a player who wants to end up with playing decides to continue playing with the team.

  It brings advantages also for children. Children who begin to play sports with others can be easily integrated into collective in normal life. Children also don´t feel very isolated when they are included in collective sport. Playing team sports brings for the children a certain method of teaching about personal values. They may also be beneficial for the mental health of the child; the children can learn sooner to be more durable if they encounter some obstacles.

Disadvantages

As team sports offer the benefits they also carry with them a certain characteristics which are not very convenient for the athlete but there is certainly less of them than the advantages. As a disadvantage of team sports we can consider that one of the players is oppressed and forced out of the collective, which can then also manifest in everyday life, for example, in a job where you will not be able to express your opinion.

For the children the disadvantage can be if a child gets to team where he will be forced for example to smoke or drink alcohol. However, for that in every team should be a coach so he knows how to secure this collective and properly motivate it.

The result of all this is that the team is a good collective and they all hold together, it will bring not only personal advantage but they will also be successful in matches if they can support one another and play collectively.

Intense descriptions of a specific experience will evoke emotions in your reader and allow them to connect with you and feel for you.

When in doubt, avoid anything that can be covered by ESPN. On ESPN, we see the games, we see the benches, we even see the locker rooms and training rooms. Take your reader somewhere different and show them something unique.

2. Use sports to point out broader themes in your life.

The main risk when writing about sports is neglecting to write about yourself. Before you get started, think about the main values that you want to express in your sports essay. Sports are simply your avenue for telling the reader what makes you unique. 

As a test, imagine if you were a pianist. Would you be able to talk about these same values? What if you were a writer? Or a chemist? Articulating your values is the end, and sports should simply be your means.

Things ESPN covers: how a player reacts to defeat, how injuries affect a player’s gameplay/attitude, how players who don’t normally work well together are working together on their new team.

Things ESPN doesn’t cover: the conversation that a player had with their mother about fear of death before going into a big surgery (value: family and connection), the ways that the intense pressure to succeed consumed a player to the point they couldn’t be there for the people in their life (value: supporting others and community), the body image issues that weigh on a player’s mind when playing their sport and how they overcame those (value: health and growth).

3. Turn a cliche storyline on its head.

There’s no getting around the fact that sports essays are often cliche. But there is a way to confront the cliche head-on. For example, lots of people write essays about the lessons they learned from an injury, victory, and so on, but fewer students explain how they are embracing those lessons. 

Perhaps you learned that competition is overwhelming for you and you prefer teamwork, so you switched from playing basketball to playing Dungeons & Dragons. Maybe, when your softball career ended abruptly, you had to find a new identity and that’s when you became obsessed with your flower garden and decided to pursue botany. Or maybe, you have stuck with football through it all, but your junior-year mental health struggle showed you that football should be fun and you have since started a nonprofit for local children to healthily engage with sports.

If your story itself is more cliche, try bringing readers to the present moment with you and show why the cliche matters and what it did for you. This requires a fair amount of creativity. Ensure you’re not parroting a frequently used topic by really thinking deeply to find your own unique spin.

Night had robbed the academy of its daytime colors, yet there was comfort in the dim lights that cast shadows of our advances against the bare studio walls. Silhouettes of roundhouse kicks, spin crescent kicks, uppercuts and the occasional butterfly kick danced while we sparred. She approached me, eyes narrowed with the trace of a smirk challenging me. “Ready spar!” Her arm began an upward trajectory targeting my shoulder, a common first move. I sidestepped — only to almost collide with another flying fist. Pivoting my right foot, I snapped my left leg, aiming my heel at her midsection. The center judge raised one finger. 

There was no time to celebrate, not in the traditional sense at least. Master Pollard gave a brief command greeted with a unanimous “Yes, sir” and the thud of 20 hands dropping-down-and-giving-him-30, while the “winners” celebrated their victory with laps as usual. 

Three years ago, seven-thirty in the evening meant I was a warrior. It meant standing up straighter, pushing a little harder, “Yes, sir” and “Yes, ma’am”, celebrating birthdays by breaking boards, never pointing your toes, and familiarity. Three years later, seven-thirty in the morning meant I was nervous. 

The room is uncomfortably large. The sprung floor soaks up the checkerboard of sunlight piercing through the colonial windows. The mirrored walls further illuminate the studio and I feel the light scrutinizing my sorry attempts at a pas de bourrée, while capturing the organic fluidity of the dancers around me. “Chassé en croix, grand battement, pique, pirouette.” I follow the graceful limbs of the woman in front of me, her legs floating ribbons, as she executes what seems to be a perfect ronds de jambes. Each movement remains a negotiation. With admirable patience, Ms. Tan casts me a sympathetic glance.   

There is no time to wallow in the misery that is my right foot. Taekwondo calls for dorsiflexion; pointed toes are synonymous with broken toes. My thoughts drag me into a flashback of the usual response to this painful mistake: “You might as well grab a tutu and head to the ballet studio next door.” Well, here I am Master Pollard, unfortunately still following your orders to never point my toes, but no longer feeling the satisfaction that comes with being a third degree black belt with 5 years of experience quite literally under her belt. It’s like being a white belt again — just in a leotard and ballet slippers. 

But the appetite for new beginnings that brought me here doesn’t falter. It is only reinforced by the classical rendition of “Dancing Queen” that floods the room and the ghost of familiarity that reassures me that this new beginning does not and will not erase the past. After years spent at the top, it’s hard to start over. But surrendering what you are only leads you to what you may become. In Taekwondo, we started each class reciting the tenets: honor, courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control, courage, humility, and knowledge, and I have never felt that I embodied those traits more so than when I started ballet. 

The thing about change is that it eventually stops making things so different. After nine different schools, four different countries, three different continents, fluency in Tamil, Norwegian, and English, there are more blurred lines than there are clear fragments. My life has not been a tactfully executed, gold medal-worthy Taekwondo form with each movement defined, nor has it been a series of frappés performed by a prima ballerina with each extension identical and precise, but thankfully it has been like the dynamics of a spinning back kick, fluid, and like my chances of landing a pirouette, unpredictable.

Self-awareness comes through with statements like “surrendering what you are only leads you to what you may become” and maturity can be seen through the student’s discussion of values “honor, courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control, courage, humility, and knowledge, and I have never felt that I embodied those traits more so than when I started ballet.” These are the kinds of comments that should find their way into a sports essay!

“Advanced females ages 13 to 14 please proceed to staging with your coaches at this time.” Skittering around the room, eyes wide and pleading, I frantically explained my situation to nearby coaches. The seconds ticked away in my head; every polite refusal increased my desperation.

Despair weighed me down. I sank to my knees as a stream of competitors, coaches, and officials flowed around me. My dojang had no coach, and the tournament rules prohibited me from competing without one.

Although I wanted to remain strong, doubts began to cloud my mind. I could not help wondering: what was the point of perfecting my skills if I would never even compete? The other members of my team, who had found coaches minutes earlier, attempted to comfort me, but I barely heard their words. They couldn’t understand my despair at being left on the outside, and I never wanted them to understand.

Since my first lesson 12 years ago, the members of my dojang have become family. I have watched them grow up, finding my own happiness in theirs. Together, we have honed our kicks, blocks, and strikes. We have pushed one another to aim higher and become better martial artists. Although my dojang had searched for a reliable coach for years, we had not found one. When we attended competitions in the past, my teammates and I had always gotten lucky and found a sympathetic coach. Now, I knew this practice was unsustainable. It would devastate me to see the other members of my dojang in my situation, unable to compete and losing hope as a result. My dojang needed a coach, and I decided it was up to me to find one. 

I first approached the adults in the dojang – both instructors and members’ parents. However, these attempts only reacquainted me with polite refusals. Everyone I asked told me they couldn’t devote multiple weekends per year to competitions. I soon realized that I would have become the coach myself.

At first, the inner workings of tournaments were a mystery to me. To prepare myself for success as a coach, I spent the next year as an official and took coaching classes on the side. I learned everything from motivational strategies to technical, behind-the-scenes components of Taekwondo competitions. Though I emerged with new knowledge and confidence in my capabilities, others did not share this faith.

Parents threw me disbelieving looks when they learned that their children’s coach was only a child herself. My self-confidence was my armor, deflecting their surly glances. Every armor is penetrable, however, and as the relentless barrage of doubts pounded my resilience, it began to wear down. I grew unsure of my own abilities.

Despite the attack, I refused to give up. When I saw the shining eyes of the youngest students preparing for their first competition, I knew I couldn’t let them down. To quit would be to set them up to be barred from competing like I was. The knowledge that I could solve my dojang’s longtime problem motivated me to overcome my apprehension.

Now that my dojang flourishes at competitions, the attacks on me have weakened, but not ended. I may never win the approval of every parent; at times, I am still tormented by doubts, but I find solace in the fact that members of my dojang now only worry about competing to the best of their abilities.

Now, as I arrive at a tournament with my students, I close my eyes and remember the past. I visualize the frantic search for a coach and the chaos amongst my teammates as we compete with one another to find coaches before the staging calls for our respective divisions. I open my eyes to the exact opposite scene. Lacking a coach hurt my ability to compete, but I am proud to know that no member of my dojang will have to face that problem again.

In the beginning, you might think this is another cliche sports essay about overcoming adversity. But instead, it becomes a unique statement and coming-of-age tale that reads as a suspenseful narrative. 

The author connects their experience with martial arts to larger themes in their life but manages to do so without riffing off of tried-and-true themes. Through statements like “I knew I couldn’t let them down. To quit would be to set them up to be barred from competing like I was” we learn about the students values and their desire to be there for those who depend on them. 

The student also brings it full circle, demonstrating their true transformation. By using the “Same, but Different” ending technique , the student places themself in the same environment that we saw in the intro, but experiences it differently due to their actions throughout the narrative. This is very compelling!

“1…2…3…4 pirouettes! New record!” My friends cheered as I landed my turns. Pleased with my progress, I gazed down at my worn-out pointe shoes. The sweltering blisters, numbing ice-baths, and draining late-night practices did not seem so bad after all. Next goal: five turns.

For as long as I can remember, ballet, in all its finesse and glamor, had kept me driven day to day. As a child, the lithe ballerinas, donning ethereal costumes as they floated across the stage, were my motivation. While others admired Messi and Adele, I idolized Carlos Acosta, principal dancer of the Royal Ballet. 

As I devoted more time and energy towards my craft, I became obsessed with improving my technique. I would stretch for hours after class, forcing my leg one inch higher in an effort to mirror the Dance Magazine cover girls. I injured my feet and ruined pair after pair of pointe shoes, turning on wood, cement, and even grass to improve my balance as I spun. At competitions, the dancers with the 180-degree leg extensions, endless turns, and soaring leaps—the ones who received “Bravos!” from the roaring audience—further pushed me to refine my skills and perfect my form. I believed that, with enough determination, I would one day attain their level of perfection. Reaching the quadruple-pirouette milestone only intensified my desire to accomplish even more. 

My efforts seemed to have come to fruition two summers ago when I was accepted to dance with Moscow’s Bolshoi Ballet at their renowned New York City summer intensive. I walked into my first session eager to learn from distinguished ballet masters and worldly dancers, already anticipating my improvement. Yet, as I danced alongside the accomplished ballerinas, I felt out of place. Despite their clean technique and professional training, they did not aim for glorious leg extensions or prodigious leaps. When they performed their turn combinations, most of them only executed two turns as I attempted four. 

“Dancers, double-pirouettes only.” 

Taken aback and confused, I wondered why our teacher expected so little from us. The other ballerinas seemed content, gracing the studio with their simple movements. 

As I grew closer with my Moscow roommates, I gradually learned that their training emphasized the history of the art form instead of stylistic tricks. Rather than show off their physical ability, their performances aimed to convey a story, one that embodied the rich culture of ballet and captured both the legacy of the dancers before them and their own artistry. As I observed my friends more intently in repertoire class, I felt the pain of the grief-stricken white swan from Swan Lake, the sass of the flirtatious Kitri from Don Quijote, and I gradually saw what I had overlooked before. My definition of talent had been molded by crowd-pleasing elements—whirring pirouettes, gravity-defying leaps, and mind-blowing leg extensions. This mindset slowly stripped me from the roots of my passion and my personal connection with ballet. 

With the Bolshoi, I learned to step back and explore the meaning behind each step and the people behind the scenes. Ballet carries history in its movements, from the societal values of the era to each choreographer’s unique flair. As I uncovered the messages behind each pirouette, kick, and jump, my appreciation for ballet grew beyond my obsession with raw athleticism and developed into a love for the art form’s emotive abilities in bridging the dancers with the audience. My journey as an artist has allowed me to see how technical execution is only the means to a greater understanding between dancer and spectator, between storyteller and listener. The elegance and complexity of ballet does not revolve around astonishing stunts but rather the evocative strength and artistry manifested in the dancer, in me. It is the combination of sentiments, history, tradition, and passion that has allowed ballet and its lessons of human connection to become my lifestyle both on and off stage.

This essay is about lessons. While the author is a dancer, this narrative isn’t really about ballet, per se — it’s about the author’s personal growth. It is purposefully reflective as the student shows a nice character arc that begins with an eager young ballerina and ends with a reflection on their past. The primary strength of this essay is the honesty and authenticity that the student approaches it with.

In the end, the student turns a cliche on its head as they embrace the idea of overcoming adversity and demonstrate how the adversity, in this case, was their own stereotypes about their art. It’s beautiful!

“Getting beat is one thing – it’s part of competing – but I want no part in losing.” Coach Rob Stark’s motto never fails to remind me of his encouragement on early-morning bus rides to track meets around the state. I’ve always appreciated the phrase, but an experience last June helped me understand its more profound, universal meaning.

Stark, as we affectionately call him, has coached track at my high school for 25 years. His care, dedication, and emphasis on developing good character has left an enduring impact on me and hundreds of other students. Not only did he help me discover my talent and love for running, but he also taught me the importance of commitment and discipline and to approach every endeavor with the passion and intensity that I bring to running. When I learned a neighboring high school had dedicated their track to a longtime coach, I felt that Stark deserved similar honors.

Our school district’s board of education indicated they would only dedicate our track to Stark if I could demonstrate that he was extraordinary. I took charge and mobilized my teammates to distribute petitions, reach out to alumni, and compile statistics on the many team and individual champions Stark had coached over the years. We received astounding support, collecting almost 3,000 signatures and pages of endorsements from across the community. With help from my teammates, I presented this evidence to the board.

They didn’t bite. 

Most members argued that dedicating the track was a low priority. Knowing that we had to act quickly to convince them of its importance, I called a team meeting where we drafted a rebuttal for the next board meeting. To my surprise, they chose me to deliver it. I was far from the best public speaker in the group, and I felt nervous about going before the unsympathetic board again. However, at that second meeting, I discovered that I enjoy articulating and arguing for something that I’m passionate about.

Public speaking resembles a cross country race. Walking to the starting line, you have to trust your training and quell your last minute doubts. When the gun fires, you can’t think too hard about anything; your performance has to be instinctual, natural, even relaxed. At the next board meeting, the podium was my starting line. As I walked up to it, familiar butterflies fluttered in my stomach. Instead of the track stretching out in front of me, I faced the vast audience of teachers, board members, and my teammates. I felt my adrenaline build, and reassured myself: I’ve put in the work, my argument is powerful and sound. As the board president told me to introduce myself, I heard, “runners set” in the back of my mind. She finished speaking, and Bang! The brief silence was the gunshot for me to begin. 

The next few minutes blurred together, but when the dust settled, I knew from the board members’ expressions and the audience’s thunderous approval that I had run quite a race. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough; the board voted down our proposal. I was disappointed, but proud of myself, my team, and our collaboration off the track. We stood up for a cause we believed in, and I overcame my worries about being a leader. Although I discovered that changing the status quo through an elected body can be a painstakingly difficult process and requires perseverance, I learned that I enjoy the challenges this effort offers. Last month, one of the school board members joked that I had become a “regular” – I now often show up to meetings to advocate for a variety of causes, including better environmental practices in cafeterias and safer equipment for athletes.

Just as Stark taught me, I worked passionately to achieve my goal. I may have been beaten when I appealed to the board, but I certainly didn’t lose, and that would have made Stark proud.

This essay uses the idea of sports to explore a more profound topic—growing through relationships. They really embrace using sports as an avenue to tell the reader about a specific experience that changed the way they approach the world.

It also leads to you having improved balance and coordination. Not only does it help your bones, but it also lowers your chances of heart attacks. The author says, “Physical activity is one of the best things you can do to help prevent a heart attack and stroke.” (Michigan Medicine) When playing sports, you are choosing to have a healthier life style. It is an excellent way to prevent yourself from un abundant amount of health diseases. It also very beneficial for your heart.  The goes on to note, “Being active helps keep your heart and blood vessels healthy in many ways.” (Michigan Medicine) One of these ways is it lowers your blood pressure. Without playing sports, one might have a high blood pressure. This can result in the hardening and thickening of arteries, which in the long run can produce a heart attack or stroke. This shows how lifesaving and beneficial sports truly are for the health of people all ages. 

Continuing on, sports are not always as great as they seem. Sports can commonly be linked to injuries. The author says, “In the U.S., about 30 million children and teens participate in some form of organized sports, and more than 3.5 million injuries each year, which cause some loss of time of participation, are experienced by the participants” (Stanford Children) This shows the more than 10 percent of kids get injured when playing sports. All though most of these injures may be minor, some can have a long-lasting effect on people. The author states, “Stress fractures that aren’t properly managed can lead to larger, harder-to heal stress fractures, or even chronic problems where the fracture never heals. That means constant discomfort and limited movement of the area where the stress fracture has occurred.” (Tan Jen) This is only one example where a sports injury can have a long-term effect on you. Sports injuries can change a whole person lifestyle and make them unable to do everyday activities. Another example is a spine injury. This can even lead to the loss of movement in certain areas of your body. This injury could leave a young child in a wheelchair for the rest of their life. Some sports injuries can even be fatal. According to the author, “Rhabdo may come about from overtraining or overtaxing muscles, but it requires a little more than pushing yourself past your limits. You have to push yourself so hard that you cause your muscle tissue to burst and leak a blood protein that clogs the kidneys.” (OSR) This proves sports can even be fatal to kids. All though this is very rare and uncommon, there still is a chance where your child could even die when playing sports. People are putting their lives on the line just for the enjoyment of sports.  

Lastly, it's clear to see sports benefits far over weigh the negatives of sports. Sports allow people to build their character and choose a healthier lifestyle. Sports allow young kids to develop important traits that can be used throughout life. It also allows people to live a healthier life style, where the at a lower risk of heart attacks and other heart complications. The one downside to sports is the injuries and how they can affect your entire life. All in all, sports can be seen as playing a beneficial role in making a person happier and healthier.

Regardless of whether you are a team player or a lone wolf, playing sports is something to be applauded. But have you really thought about the pro’s and con’s of your chosen field?

With camaraderie and team spirit leading the pack, there are endless advantages to playing team sports, particularly in childhood and adolescent years.

Team sports promote cooperation, no matter the individual talents of the players, you must work together and rely on your teammates in order to succeed.

Playing as a team promotes good sportsmanship and helps to put winning into perspective. Being a sore loser is common, particularly among only children, or those who have never played a team sport.

But, being part of team allows you to understand winning and losing and how to deal with it in a safe and supportive environment.

The burden of loss is felt equally amongst teammates, this can lessen the blow, whereas winning can feel more valuable when the success is shared.

Team sports teach you to appreciate the value of every teammates abilities and how their strengths can contribute to shared goal. This can make you a more supportive, patient and optimistic person on and off the field.

Participating in a team sport can also be a powerful and fun way to stay motivated and push yourself. Having teammates to train with can be inspiring and encourage you to rise to new levels.

Ultimately team sports are a great way to make friends and meet new people. They attract a lot of support and promote a sense of community and belonging.

Individual spots such as tennis have also been proven to be highly beneficial for children who suffer from Attention Deficit Disorder, and other sensory or socialisation disorders. These sports aid in developing self-esteem while improving focus and encourage physical activity.

Cons Of Playing Individual Sports

Individual sports lack the opportunity for athletes to form the same bonds as those on teams, and they do not have the same social aspects. This can mean the individual sports can be lonely and secluding.

Individual sports can cause athletes to have an unhealthier relationship with losing as they lack the support and accountability of a team. A losing streak for an individual athlete can drastically impact their overall confidence in their abilities.

Overall people are said to find team sports more enjoyable, however, the virtues of self-reliance and discipline promoted by individual sports are certainly not to be discounted.

Physical safety is important to think about, but over protecting your child is harming them in many ways. Keeping the real world hidden from them is going to make it harder on them in the long run, they need to know that they cannot always win at life, and that they must work together to make this world a better place. Playing sports may have its risks, but it also teaches valuable lessons. Children get hurt daily, so why not let them benefit from it. Every sport has potential risk factors. Injuries are very common in sports. When signing up for sports you are potentially signing up to have nose bleeds and sometimes even death. When professional snowmobiler Caleb Moore signed up for extreme snowmobiling he knew the risks that were involved in it. During his run in the snowmobiling freestyle competition he “came up short and the skis on the front of his snowmobile caught the lip of the landing area, sending [him] flying over the handle bars”, which led to his death (Golinkin 616). Although Moore’s death is looked at as a tragedy, it really is not. Caleb Moore died doing what he loved, and most incredibly, “He literally died trying to fly” (Golinkin 617). In “Children Need to Play, Not Compete,” Jessica Statsky argues that younger children should not be involved in overly competitive sports. Statsky wrote that organized competitive sports were to the disadvantage of children both physically and psychologically. In youth athletics, some parents and coaches put their own dreams in front of their children 's’ well-being by stressing winning. Statsky concludes “all organized sports activities” to be remade as a more enjoyable game regardless of each athlete’s ability and athleticism. The author states many issues that kids have when they are forced to play a sport just to win or that they don’t enjoy. Some kids just don 't enjoy sports, but their parents force it on them. Certain organized sports programs promote winning over physical skills and self-esteem. Statsky brings up valid points that early childhood shouldn’t involve intense physical competition, which is associated with the risk of injury to the body and mind.

Competitive Sports Are Not Worth The Risk Of Injury

A point of disagreement among many parents of children who play competitive sports is if the benefits outweigh the risk of injury. It is clear that competitive sports aren’t worth the risks, with high mental costs to send a child where they would be pressured to not let down the team, and when all it takes is a hit to the head to sustain life-changing injuries.

Occasionally in some athletes’ lives, the parents pick the sport their child participates in. They may do this because they want to envision themselves and their child participating. Athletes’ parents push them to go to practice and games, and they end up quitting due to the parents “gap between the child’s desire to have fun and the misguided notion among some adults that their kids’ games are a miniature version of grown-up competitions, where the goal is to win (Atkinson). This problem can lead to psychological and anxiety issues in children. If a child believes they have to be the best, but they physically and emotionally can’t, it can make the relationship between the parent and child distant and not as strong. Parents hope to see their children in the professional sports; however, only “one in six thousand high school football players will make it to the NFL” (Atkinson). With these statistics, the odds are very low for athletes to make it that far, and parents pushing their children to be that .0001 chance can stress a kid out and strain their academics. One important advantage of playing sports is that you can greatly improve your fitness level.

Many people in our nowadays society don’t work out too often and therefore, they become quite lazy and unfit.

In turn, many people also suffer from serious overweight and obesity and in order to mitigate those problems, playing a sport can be a great way to lose weight.

Hence, if you are currently struggling with your weight or with your fitness in general, you may want to start playing a sport in order to solve your problems in a rather short period of time.

Many people also really like playing sports as a hobby.

The good thing about sports is that there are so many different sports out there and chances are that you will find a sport that is suitable for you quite soon.

If you don’t know which sport fits you yet, you may want to try different sports until you find your favorite one.

The reason why I recommend going for team sports is that teamwork is quite important in several parts of our lives and if you learn how to work in a team in a proper manner, this will give you higher chances to succeed in various parts of life.

Moreover, you can also make many new friends by playing team sports.

Sports are also known to reduce our overall stress levels . In our current society, many people feel stressed since they have to work quite long hours and also often have to take care of their kids.

Hence, it is quite difficult to deal with all those tasks in a proper manner and chances are that you will need some time off from your daily life.

Sports can help you in this regard since they provide you with a good opportunity to unplug from your stressful daily life and to recharge your batteries.

Another benefit of sports is that they can also increase your overall level of confidence.

If you are currently overweight or suffer from a lack of confidence due to various other reasons, playing a sport can greatly help you to boost your confidence since you will be able to make many new friends who can support you and you will also gain trust in your abilities.

Playing sports can be exhausting, sports equipment can be expensive, sports can be time-consuming, can interfere with your corporate career, playing sports can lead to serious injuries, some sports can also be quite unhealthy, you may need a trainer to become really good, playing sports can lead to serious pressure, you may give up quite soon, success in sports may depend on individual talent.

Apart from the many benefits of playing sports, there are also some issues related to them.

For instance, one problem with sports is that they can be quite exhausting.

Many people do not want to exercise too much and if those people have to run a lot, chances are that they will lose interest in their sport pretty soon.

Some sports are much more exhausting than others and if you are a person who doesn’t like to exercise too much, make sure to choose your sport according to that.

Another downside of sports is that sports equipment can be quite expensive.

Especially in sports where you need plenty of protection, you can spend many hundreds or even many thousands of dollars on your equipment.

However, many sports are also quite cheap.

For instance, if you want to play soccer, you just need a ball and you are basically ready to go.

Hence, make sure to choose your sport according to your budget in order to avoid any unpleasant surprises later on.

If you want to get really good at your sport, you will also have to invest plenty of time.

Yet, hard work pays off sooner or later and this is also true when it comes to succeeding in sports.

Therefore, also make sure that you want to make this time-commitment for your sport.

If you invest plenty of time in your sport, this can also lead to serious problems regarding your corporate career.

If you work in a demanding job and want to get promoted on a regular basis, chances are that you will have to work for long hours every day.

In turn, there might not be enough time left to play your favorite sport.

Hence, at one point in time, chances are that you will have to decide between following a professional sports career or a business career.

Some sports are also known to be quite risky.

In fact, many sports athletes suffer from serious injuries during their careers and some of them even have to quit their sport sooner or later due to those injuries.

Thus, make sure that you are willing to suffer quite a bit for your sport, especially if you want it to become your profession.

While playing sports on a recreational basis is often quite healthy, the opposite is true when you play sports on a professional level.

In fact, many professional sports athletes have a significantly lower life expectancy compared to the average person in the general public.

Consequently, if you want to do good for your health, staying on a recreational level may be better for you compared to pursuing a professional sports career.

If you really want to become world-class at your sport, you will also have to get a trainer who can expose your weaknesses and who can bring you to the next level.

However, those trainers are usually not cheap and you should factor this in before deciding to go for a professional sports career.

Especially if you want to play sports on a professional level, you may also suffer from serious pressure. It can be mentally challenging when millions of people watch your games and many people are also not able to deal with this kind of pressure in a proper manner.

Many people are also quite excited and motivated to learn a sport at the beginning.

However, in many cases, their motivation levels drop quite quickly and therefore, many people also give up quite soon.

Thus, especially at the beginning, make sure to stay focused and motivated in order to stay on track with your sport.

Hard work is important to succeed in various parts of life.

Yet, hard work alone is often not sufficient to become really good at things.

This is also true for sports. If you don’t have a certain amount of talent, you will likely never succeed as a professional athlete.

Thus, make sure that you have some plans ready in case your sports career fails for various possible reasons.

LeBron James’s son is testing the NBA draft waters. Is the USC freshman ready for the NBA? We spoke with NBA personnel to assess his game.

Bronny James has the type of athleticism, selfless passing ability, and defensive tenacity that gives him NBA potential. But as a freshman guard at USC, he underwhelmed as a shooter and shot creator, averaging 4.8 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game while shooting 36.6 percent from the field and 26.7 percent from 3-point range. If LeBron weren’t his father, Bronny would not be on the 2024 draft radar.

“Bronny is nowhere near ready,” an NBA general manager told The Ringer . “He should go back to school to develop at his own pace or he risks getting lost in the shuffle, whether or not he’s playing with his dad.”

James declared for the draft this week while retaining his college eligibility and also entering the transfer portal, so he has options for his future. And as a sports fan, I’m rooting for Bronny to succeed because I’d love another junior-senior story after growing up in the 1990s loving Ken Griffey Jr. and watching him play with his father. But the harsh reality is that there’s no guarantee James has the skill to stick in the NBA.

James suffered a heart issue that delayed the start of his college career, so he’d likely have a better sophomore season after entering the year fully healthy. But his freshman performance mirrored both the strengths and weaknesses that scouts observed throughout his high school career.

I spoke with an NBA GM, another front-office executive, and a scout, all from separate teams, to get their opinions on Bronny’s future and how it could tie into LeBron’s final years. All of them were granted anonymity so that they could speak freely for the story.

The Big Question

Watch a Bronny highlight reel, and you’ll see a player who looks the part from beyond the arc:

But his shots don’t fall often enough. James shot only 19.6 percent on catch-and-shoot 3s at USC, according to Synergy Sports. He missed 37 of his 46 attempts and sprayed them all over. Front-rim misses. Back of the rim. Clankers off the left and right sides. Usually, the best shooters consistently miss short or long, not to the sides. But shots have never regularly fallen for Bronny, even going back to high school. James received accolades as a McDonald’s All-American and an invite to the Nike Hoop Summit, but his shot was always just a theoretical skill. At the high school level, he made only 33.8 percent of his catch-and-shoot 3s on 139 attempts, according to the Synergy database. That’s a much better percentage than he had in college but still nowhere close to a knockdown level.

“Bronny is an undersized non-shooting guard,” an NBA scout told The Ringer . “The shot looks good but doesn’t go in. Those guys scare me the most. It’s either lack of touch or mental, and either way, those take years to correct.”

Will Bronny’s percentages someday match his picturesque form? It can be valuable to look at percentages from other areas of the floor to get an overall picture of a player’s shooting ability. But in high school and college combined, Synergy data says James made only 28.1 percent of his floaters, 30.2 percent of his pull-up 2-point jumpers, and 26.7 percent of his dribble-jumper 3s. None of these numbers are positive indicators.

James did make 43.8 percent of his pull-up jumpers at USC, but it came on only 32 attempts. Still, these flashes are what optimists must hold on to if they want to believe in his long-term potential.

“He’d be a first-rounder if he had shot well [at USC],” said the GM. USC lists Bronny James at 6-foot-4, but it’s believed he’s closer to 6-foot-2. Despite his lack of height, he has a wide, chiseled frame, and when his shots are falling off the dribble, he looks like the type of creator who can make defenders pay for giving him too much space. Since he’s willing to play off the ball, he could in theory be an athletic player who shoots off screens and handoffs or makes passes off those movement actions.

“[ESPN draft insider Jonathan] Givony had him ranked as a lotto guy at one point last year for a reason,” the GM continued. “But unfortunately, Bronny’s shot still hasn’t developed.”

Bronny is now unranked on ESPN’s 2024 board, instead falling in the second round of its 2025 board . Givony made that switch back in February, which prompted LeBron to make a since-deleted post on X: “Can yall please just let the kid be a kid and enjoy college basketball. The work and results will ultimately do the talking no matter what he decides to do.”

I’ve had Bronny unranked in my 2024 NBA Draft Guide all season largely because of concerns about his jumper and overall lack of production; he just seemed like more of a 2025 or 2026 prospect. This class is deep with guards who are better bets than him at this point.

Ballhandling

Bronny must figure out how to hit his jumpers to be an effective NBA player because he doesn’t offer dynamic ballhandling ability or primary playmaking. Those aren’t things he’s excelled at on any level, whether playing for Sierra Canyon in high school, for USA Basketball squads, or for USC. James has long been more of a connective playmaker who makes passes within the flow of the offense.

Passes like the ones above can help lubricate a half-court offense. He makes quick decisions. He has an ambidextrous flair to him, too. But if he doesn’t have a reliable jumper, his threat from the perimeter is limited. Of course, the same also could have been said about his father in the early stages of his development. LeBron was not a reliable perimeter shooter in high school and even into the early stages of his NBA career. Eventually, it came to him. But LeBron also had otherworldly size and athleticism. Bronny doesn’t have a great handle, limiting his ability to regularly create his own shot or get into the paint.

James took only 22.8 percent of his shot attempts at the rim this season. Most of those attempts came via off-ball cuts or transition attacks. In the half court, he didn’t log a single dunk attempt and made only one of his five attempts on self-created shots at the rim (by my count, after I watched each video on Synergy).

As the clips above show, James does not get significant burst off the dribble, and unlike his dad, he isn’t an elite leaper without a runway. This means that his shots can get blocked or heavily altered, which raises doubts about his ability to ever be a primary shot creator.

Since he has a good passing feel and high basketball IQ, there’s a role for him playing next to high-level teammates as long as he develops his jumper. But until he does, the idea that he’ll suddenly be better in the NBA than he was in college is far-fetched.

In a tweet during last year’s regular season, LeBron said: “Man Bronny definitely better than some of these cats I’ve been watching on league pass today. Shit lightweight hilarious.”

LeBron’s support for his son is admirable, though the by-product of his immense worldwide fame is the perception that Bronny is a far greater prospect than he actually is. And so far his results have not changed based on his circumstances, which have been chosen for him every step of the way.

“I love the ‘He’s better with better players’ spin so much,” said the scout. “He had better players this year and was still inefficient.”

The Trojans struggled this season, posting a 15-18 record. The team just never clicked. But it was still the most talent that Bronny had ever shared the floor with; a potential lottery pick, Isaiah Collier, led what was labeled the country’s third-best recruiting class. The only times Bronny had played with more talent, other than in his driveway, was at McDonald’s All-American, which is a glorified exhibition, and the Hoop Summit, which features players from around the world in a competitive atmosphere.

Bronny optimists point to that game as a reason to believe in James, who finished with 11 points, four rebounds, one block, and one steal coming off the bench for Team USA at the annual Hoop Summit last April. “He played extremely hard,” said the executive. “It was apparent that his skill level needed time to develop, and that’s certainly OK as a prospect.”

Any team that drafts James will need to be patient. But his defense would be the first skill that earns him a chance at minutes. Most noticeably, he has extremely quick hands and the reaction time to rack up deflections on crossovers and passes.

One of Bronny’s best defensive sequences of the season came against Oregon, the school he almost chose over USC. In the clip above, he made a perfect closeout following an offensive board, then stuck his hand in the air to steal the ball like he was swatting a mosquito.

In the next play, above, he perfectly timed his contest on a jumper to poke it away before the opponent could even elevate.

James had multiple chase-down blocks and high-effort highlights throughout the season. “He knows where to be in help defensively,” said the scout, who noted that James had somewhat inflated steal numbers since he was allowed to take chances he won’t be able to at the next level. Nonetheless, his IQ, reflexes, and awareness all mean that he has defensive playmaking potential.

On the ball, James is laterally quick and makes an effort to stay in his stance while mirroring the opponent. We can nitpick his technique when he fights over screens, but any defensive flaws are easily solvable considering his intelligence and hustle. “Size is really the only issue for him on defense,” said the GM. “If he was actually 6-foot-4 or even a bit bigger, he’d have really excellent potential.”

Instead, James projects as more of a disrupter. Comparisons that came up in these conversations include Patrick Beverley, Davion Mitchell, and Norris Cole. Beverley has had the longest career of the three because he’s the best shooter (37 percent from 3 in his career). Mitchell has yet to figure out his shot with the Kings, while Cole won two titles with LeBron in Miami before flaming out, in part because his shot never developed. But all three of them were respectable defenders. Bronny will have to follow in their footsteps to catch on with a winning team.

The LeBron Factor

Bronny declared for the draft but retained his college eligibility and entered the transfer portal. A return to USC seems unlikely after head coach Andy Enfield left for SMU. Perhaps Bronny would reconsider Oregon or even Ohio State? Then there’s Duquesne, an Atlantic 10 Conference school that James is expected to consider, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski . LeBron’s high school teammate Dru Joyce is the successor for head coach Keith Dambrot, who was LeBron’s coach in high school. The A-10 has been the home of plenty of NBA prospects in recent years, from Obi Toppin to Bones Hyland. So it’s not without its success stories for players who need multiple years in school.

Bronny has only until May 1 to make a decision on a school before the transfer portal closes. Testing the NBA waters gives him flexibility, though. There’s nothing to lose on that end. He can go through the predraft process, get feedback from NBA teams, and perhaps show off an improved jumper or handle. By May 29, when Bronny must make a decision on whether to withdraw from the draft, perhaps there will be more clarity about LeBron’s future, too. The Lakers will also have a clearer idea of their outlook by then: As the ninth seed, they are currently a long shot to make a Finals run; they’d have to win two games in the play-in tournament to even grab a spot in the playoffs.

“[Bronny’s] path to the NBA has yet to be defined,” said the exec. “And it’s not to knock the kid, either. He seems like a great teammate. He’s in a difficult spot.”

Indeed. Every passing season, LeBron gets another year older, another year closer to retirement. And if Bronny doesn’t continue improving, then his own chances of getting an opportunity at the next level diminish. The time to make the leap could be now, provided there’s a team that wants to invest in him while also increasing the odds of luring his father to their organization.

As a result of the Anthony Davis trade, the Lakers will lose their first-round pick to the Pelicans either this year or next. People around the league expect that the Pelicans will give the Lakers their pick this year and take the 2025 pick. If that’s the case, it’s hard to fathom that Los Angeles would use the pick on Bronny. Rob Pelinka is far more likely to use it to chase Trae Young or another star in a trade.

The Lakers do, however, have a late second that could be used on Bronny, unless another team takes him earlier. Would the Warriors try to leverage Bronny and their players’ relationships with his father to get LeBron? Or maybe the Sixers, with all their cap space, could try to get the father-son duo? Or perhaps the Knicks would take Bronny, offering LeBron a good team and a big market? Teams with a cache of picks, such as the Jazz or Thunder, could see the appeal in taking a flier on him too, regardless of the odds that LeBron would have interest. But removing that significant variable does diminish Bronny’s value in this year’s draft.

“There are probably three rounds’ worth of prospects more talented than Bronny in this class,” the GM said. “So picking Bronny is more about getting LeBron’s attention right now than it is about developing Bronny himself.”

LeBron has of course helped Bronny as much as he could along the way, providing him with world-class resources and love. With that has also come pressure—which we can see in the quotes LeBron gives to microphones and his own phone. But James has backed down from his comments about playing on the same team as his son.

“Whatever his journey, however his journey lays out, he’s going to do what’s best for him,” LeBron said last May. “We’re going to support him in whatever he decides to do. So just because that’s my aspiration or my goal doesn’t mean it’s his. And I’m absolutely OK with that.”

In the months to come, Bronny needs to figure out whether by fulfilling his father’s dream, he’s still pursuing his own.

2024 NFL Draft top-30 visits tracker: Full list of every prospect all 32 teams have brought in for meetings

Prospects are meeting with teams as the 2024 nfl draft approaches.

The 2024 NFL Draft is quickly approaching, meaning teams do not have much time to finalize their draft boards, evaluate prospects and schedule visits with potential picks. Top-30 visits are currently in full swing, with players and teams getting their final face time in before the big event.

Teams can bring up to 30 players for these "top-30 visits" in order to get to know the players more with meetings, interviews and a physical. These visits can tell a team a lot about the players and whether they would be good fits for their squad.

As it currently stands, the Chicago Bears have the No. 1 overall pick and are expected to take USC quarterback Caleb Williams. The Washington Commanders have the No. 2 overall pick and the New England Patriots follow at No. 3. The Commanders and Patriots are both expected to take quarterbacks, with North Carolina's Drake Maye and LSU's Jayden Daniels as two of the top options.

With 32 teams bringing in up to 30 players, there can be up to 960 visits across the NFL . It's a lot to keep track of, but lucky for you, CBS Sports has you covered on everything you need to know. Here's our updating list of top-30 visits for every team.
