What is a resume writing workshop?

  • Career Advice
  • Industry Insights

Posted On 26 Jan 2021

Resume writing doesn’t always come easy, but it is a skill that can be learned with proper instruction.

One of the ways to hone your resume writing skills is by attending a resume writing workshop. So, what is a resume writing workshop, you may ask? It is a method of writing instruction that engages would-be resume writers with a structured set of lessons for the purpose of learning how to write this particularly important job application document effectively.

Your resume is your first point of contact with a potential employer, and you need it to leave a good impression immediately. To make the most progress with your resume write-up, you’ll need guidance from a professional resume writer, along with tools and techniques to support your development. Attending a workshop is where you can acquire all these and more.

Six great reasons to attend a workshop on resume writing

For those who want to knock writing out of the ballpark, a resume writing workshop can be the ideal solution. Here are six great reasons to attend a workshop on resume writing for your own benefit.

1. To know the latest and best resume writing techniques

Resumes evolve, and requirements change with the times. To know what current employers are looking for in a resume, you need to know the latest and best techniques in the field, and a resume writing workshop given by some of the most successful people in the industry is the way to make that happen.

2. To produce quality writing

Although there is no correlation between a person’s ability to write a quality resume with his or her job performance, a well-written resume tells prospective employers that you pay close attention to the details of the work you produce. Any error in formatting, grammar, spelling, and punctuation can be viewed as carelessness. Attending a good resume workshop can be a great way to ensure the quality of your resume and convey a high level of meticulousness in your work—something that’s favored by any employer in any industry.

3. To gain confidence

You may be able to write a good resume, but if you don’t believe in your abilities, your mind will give you all kinds of excuses why your resume is never going to be good enough. Your resume is a reflection of your own confidence, but it can be challenging to present your skills and abilities in a way that radiates self-assuredness. A workshop on resume writing might just be the boost you need to be more confident about your efforts.

4. Networking

When you work on your own, it’s easy to find yourself uninspired and in a rut. At this workshop, you’ll be in the presence of people whose only goal is to help you succeed. Learning how the experts approach the art of resume writing can really help you make strides with your own writing tasks. But beyond that, workshops offer plenty of great opportunities for networking . Keep in mind that resume writers have plenty of connections in many industries, and that can open up possibilities for your own career.

5. To develop your personal brand

Nowadays, it’s all about branding and marketing yourself in the best possible way, and this principle applies even to resume writing. Resume writing workshops can be a great way to learn about the employment world and gain knowledge on how to make your professional branding a strong job-search weapon.

6. To learn a potentially money-making skill

Looking to add to your monthly income? Turn your newfound talent for resume writing into a side gig! Whether you choose to be part of a team or strike out on your own, you can start earning money from resume writing almost immediately. Of course, before you announce your new services to the world, you’ll need to develop a business plan for your side gig and see how it fits into your existing career. And make sure to set goals you want to achieve if you decide to push forward.

What if resume writing isn’t really for you?

As mentioned, there isn’t really a direct link between resume writing and one’s ability to perform his or her job responsibilities, and many people will find that resume writing simply isn’t their cup of tea. If this is you, there’s no need to worry. Resumeble has got you covered.

ATTN: professional and mid-career job seekers:

If you’ve been applying (and applying, and applying, and… applying) and getting no response to your resume…

You’re probably wondering: is there some big resume secret you’re missing.

It’s not like you’re not trying. You have…

  • Gone down more than one internet rabbit hole looking for the best advice (but it’s hard to know who to trust!)
  • Downloaded sample resume after sample resume (but it’s tricky to tailor the samples to YOUR situation)
  • Tried to make sense of vague, generalized advice like “use keywords to get past ATS” (okay… but how?)
  • Spent hours tailoring your resume to each job description (and still heard nothing!)

So… what’s that “one thing” you’re missing?

What you’re missing is a strong personal brand that hiring managers recognize instantly.

All the general advice or resume examples out there aren’t working because…

Hiring is personal.

So your approach to your resume must be personal, too!

If you’re using personal-brand-focused documents you have zero competition. No other job seeker can touch you with a ten-foot pole.

Creating a personal brand is that powerful.

And the BEST place to start building a personal brand is on your resume (right now!)

Creating a personal brand as a job-seeker doesn’t have to involve generating a huge LinkedIn presence, taking new headshots, or getting a new wardrobe.

You can start right now on the place that matters most: your resume.

But HOW do you create a personal-brand-focused resume that gets results?

Most online resources and courses don’t teach resumes this way. Instead, they give generalized advice (like “highlight your measurable achievements”)... which leads to you creating a pretty general, not-stand-out resume!

That’s why resume-writing services exist, pairing you with an expert writer who gets to the heart of what makes you the only one for the job.

The problem is… these individual services cost $1000+. More than what many job seekers can comfortably afford….

What if you could create your OWN personal-brand-focused resume — in just one day?

Without any of the guesswork.

  • Writing one resume section at a time, with step-by-step guidance
  • Using unique resume templates, already designed to get through ATS
  • Getting personalized feedback from a resume expert, so that you know you “did it right this time”

So that you can finally start getting positive, eager responses to your resume!

In no time, you’ll find yourself…

  • Prepping for multiple interviews for roles that all sound right up your alley
  • Fielding requests from recruiters who think you’d be PERFECT for a competitive position
  • Standing out even BEFORE the interview based on your strong resume

Ultimately, what all this means is that you have agency in intentionally selecting your next position, next company, and next chapter of your life — a privilege we all deserve!

Introducing…

The resume-in-a-day workshop, write a polished, interview-winning resume in one day.

In just 5 hours, each module will walk you through, step-by-step, how to…

  • Define Your Target Roles (so you don’t have to change up your resume drastically for each position you apply for)
  • Uncover Your Personal Brand (so that other job seekers with similar experience simply can’t compare)
  • Write Each Section of Your Resume (so that nothing on your resume is arbitrary — every word is powerful)
  • Get Your Resume Noticed (so that you make sure your resume gets into the right hands)

This pre-recorded workshop is meant to step in for a resume writer, as though an expert is leaning over your shoulder and guiding you through our proven process. You’ll also get access to…

  • Proven, ATS-optimized resume templates, so you don’t have to worry about your resume getting through applicant tracking systems anymore (and save tons of time formatting your resume)
  • Examples of resumes from our real clients in diverse industries/roles, so you can see exactly how your resume should look for your circumstance
  • Private LinkedIn group, where you can ask questions, receive support, and network with other job seekers (without your employer finding out)
  • A personal resume review live “office hours” with course instructor and seasoned resume expert Jessica Hernandez, where you will get individual feedback on the resume you created during the workshop

Jessica Hernandez, founded the Great Resumes Fast executive resume writing services company in 2008

Hello, I’m Jessica Hernandez.

Before I created The Resume In A Day Workshop, I spent 15+ years honing my resume-writing process through my company, Great Resumes Fast.

We’ve distilled the process of writing resumes down to a science, and as a result, our resumes have…

  • Led to positions at competitive companies, including Google, Tesla, CNN, Pfizer, and more
  • Resulted in interviews within 90 days in 9/10 times
  • Achieved a 4.9 average TrustPilot rating, out of hundreds of reviews
  • Helped job seekers go from months of “no response” to dream offers (including significant salary increases!)
  • Served over 12,000 clients across multiple industries!

But there’s one thing I’ve discovered you can never completely systematize: The personal brand story you must tell to stand out.

That’s why our services include 1:1 interviews with our resume writers.

That’s why most general advice can only get you so far.

That’s why Resume In A Day Workshop was created.

I hope you’ll join us!

The Resume-In-A-Day Workshop FAQs

We hear you! Job searching is like a second job. That’s why we’ve structured Resume In A Day Workshop as a workshop that you take WHILE writing your resume. This is not something you have to watch and take notes for like a lecture and then go implement on your own.

Instead, you write as you go through the workshop, so the TOTAL time commitment is just about 5 hours (give or take based on the live office-hours feedback session).

YES! Once you’ve created your resume through the workshop, you’ll be invited to live office hours with Jessica, where she’ll personally review and offer feedback on your resume. This is a bonus that not even every done-for-you resume-writing client receives!

We recommend waiting for an upcoming workshop JUST for career-changers (launch date TBA!). This workshop is best for job-seekers who aren’t making a drastic career change.

Your concerns are completely valid. Some people face greater barriers in their job search than others! We think this is all the more reason to enroll in Resume In A Day Workshop.

Not only will creating a personal-brand-focused resume support your challenging job search, but you will particularly benefit from the personal feedback office hours. You will get individual feedback from Jessica to make SURE your resume does the heavy lifting for you to overcome biases in the job market or set you apart in a crowded industry.

The general advice you find floating around LinkedIn or in “tips” articles and videos can only take you so far when the secret ingredient you’re missing is the personal brand.

Resume In A Day Workshop walks you through this crucial piece, including how to write every section of your resume from a personal brand angle.

In addition, this workshop comes with personal feedback to make SURE your resume will win interviews, ATS-optimized templates to get your resume past applicant tracking systems, and step-by-step guidance through individual resume sections.

The workshop is 100% self-paced, so you can fit it into YOUR schedule … and start TODAY!

The only live element is the personal feedback office hours on a date to be announced, so if you want to get feedback, you just have to make sure to complete your resume by then.

FOREVER! Let’s say that in two years from now, you’re looking to change jobs again to advance your career further. You can return to this workshop (with all the updates included!) to guide you through that transition — at no added cost!

Yes, you can. But, due to updates that will be made every year, Resume In A Day Workshop will only be open for enrollment 2X a year. So, if you think you could be job-seeking any time in the next 6 months, we recommend getting the workshop now so you’ll have it when the time comes.

Most likely, yes! The workshop is designed around the resume-writing process we take our clients through, and they come from dozens of different industries and are seeking a variety of distinct roles.

The only industries Resume In A Day Workshop would not apply for are professions that require a traditional CV (such as academia, law, military, and federal/government positions or medical doctors).

Unfortunately, probably not. While you may get some benefit from this workshop, we recommend starting with our other resources designed for entry-level professionals. In the future, we will likely launch a resume course JUST for entry-level job seekers, so keep your eyes peeled.

Yes! Resume In A Day Workshop is made JUST for you. It’s an excellent workshop for mid- to senior-level professionals looking to advance or seek new challenges. The workshop will help you craft a new resume that leverages your past experience for your dream position.

The only exception is if you are at the executive to C-suite level, which requires a different approach. If that’s you, you will be best served by hiring one of our resume writers individually.

“Is The Resume-In-A-Day Workshop right for me?”

Probably not if one or more of the following is true for you:.

  • You live or work outside the United States (this workshop is specific to US roles)
  • Your profession requires a traditional CV (such as academia, law, military, and federal/government positions or medical doctors)
  • You want to make a drastic career change, such as changing industries or roles (a future version of this workshop will tackle this circumstance)
  • You are entry-level or have no previous work experience (this workshop is for mid-career professionals)
  • You prefer to have an expert create your resume for you (our resume-writing services will be a better fit for you)
  • You are at the C-Suite or executive level (our resume-writing services will be a better fit for you)

Definitely YES if one or more of the following is true for you:

  • You are a mid- to senior-level professional seeking your next challenge, advancement, or dream role
  • You are ready to jump in and create your resume soon (if not TODAY!)
  • You are clear about what role or company you want next, but you just need help figuring out HOW to get there

This lesson will discuss what a resume is and why you need one. Then, it will go over the six sections of a resume: Heading, objective, education, work experience, special skills, and references, and you'll learn how job seekers utilize each one to market themselves to prospective employers. The lesson will also discuss some other resources on the Internet where you can look over sample resume headings and objectives.

In this lesson, you'll outline the skills that you've developed in five areas of your life—work, education, internships, volunteering, and extracurricular activities. Then, you'll edit those skills down to the ones that are most relevant to employment, and choose an important skill for each area. Next, you'll come up with personality traits and narrow those down to the ones that are useful in a business setting. The lesson will ask you to list the three accomplishments that you're most proud of, and the skills that you used to make these goals come to fruition.

This lesson will cover the rules of resumes. For instance, a resume should be only one page, and it should be laser-printed or typeset by a professional printer, and it should be printed on bond paper. You'll also learn what not to include on your resume, and why it's perfectly acceptable to use the word "I" on your resume if you so desire. The lesson will conclude with a discussion about Truth in Resume Writing . Through example, it will demonstrate how to portray job duties in the best possible light without getting yourself into trouble.

In this lesson, you'll learn about the most popular style of resume—the chronological resume. In this type of resume, you'll list work experience in reverse chronological order. Your current or last position is listed first in the work experience section of your resume. The lesson will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of this type of resume and show you how to minimize a gap in work history. Although many people will have a few small gaps in work history, having too many gaps or gaps that are too large will put prospective employers on alert.

This lesson will go over the other two resume formats—the functional resume and the hybrid—the combined resume. Although not as popular as the chronological resume, these resume formats do fulfill a need for some job seekers. Employees who are following a new direction in their career, or who don't have much experience for a particular position, may choose a functional format. You'll learn the differences between functional resumes and chronological ones, and as part of the lesson, you'll look at four people's chronological resumes and practice converting them into functional and combined resumes.

In this lesson, you'll concentrate on your resume. The lesson will discuss how to set up the heading of your resume and the options you have available to you when you're doing so. Then, you'll look at some sample resume headings. You'll learn how to write a persuasive objective for your personal resume and then learn about career profiles and summaries of qualifications. The lesson will also go over examples of objectives, career profiles, and summaries. Finally, you'll look at the education section of your resume and learn what's included in an honors section.

In this lesson, you'll learn about references. You'll begin by looking at examples of two reference letters written by two different individuals. Then, the lesson will discuss how to request a reference letter and show you some samples of them. You'll learn about the different people you can request a letter from and take a look at the difference between a regular reference and a sealed reference. After that, you'll look at a sample reference sheet that you can use as a model to construct your own. The lesson will finish up with some examples of how you can refer to your references on your resume.

In this lesson, you'll learn how to turn job descriptions into advertising copy. Your resume is an advertisement for a product, and you are the product, and your potential employer is the customer. You need to express the features (actual description of your product) and the benefits (how it will help or aid the customer) of the product. You must be as persuasive and specific as possible when describing your features and benefits. Finally, the lesson will discuss company job descriptions and why they're important to you.

In this lesson, you'll learn all about technical resumes (resumes for engineering, data processing, and other technical and management careers). The lesson will discuss how these resumes differ from traditional resumes. You'll learn about buzzwords and find out how to use them effectively on a technical resume. Then, you'll learn some writing tips for technical resumes and go over a recommended technical resume format. You'll finish up the lesson by looking over some examples of technical resumes—one chronological and one functional.

In this lesson, you'll learn the three methods that employers use to locate a job candidate on the Internet. The lesson will discuss resume banks, search engines, and newsgroups. It will explain what you need in order to get Internet access, and the three versions you'll need in order to post your resume on the web. The lesson will also go over keywords and other online resume tips and explain why you need to protect yourself on the Internet, as well as ways to accomplish this. Finally, there will be a discussion about how to post your resume.

In this lesson, you'll learn how to write an effective cover letter. The lesson will explain what a cover letter is and when you'll need one. Then, you'll go over the different parts of a cover letter and look at several examples of them. Finally, the lesson will discuss the follow-up sentence that you might include in the closing of your cover letter and why it's important in your job search.

The final lesson is all about the new resume that you've been working on throughout this course. You'll take one final critical look at it: Is your name centered at the top of the page? Is it highlighted by a larger font, bolding, or underlining? Is your objective highlighted, along with your education, college, and work experience? Were you consistent with font sizes, capitalization, spacing, and punctuation? Is everything lined up vertically? The left-hand side of your resume should be lined up vertically, but the right-hand side should be ragged. Is your resume perfect with no typos or spelling errors? By the time you finish this lesson, your resume will be ready to present to prospective employers!

As someone who just started a new job helping unemployed individuals search for work, this class has provided invaluable information and has increased my knowledge to better serve my clients. Thank you!

I decided to take this course because my resume is outdated, stale, and unpolished. Already this course has introduced me to new styles and resources I wasn't aware of. Thanks Stephanie for making this easier and immensely more productive than I thought it would be or could be.

I felt this was a relatively painless way to end up with a completed resume. I also think this class is much better than reading a how-to book because the information is up-to-date, plus if you have lots of questions like I did, the instructor is right there to answer them. I also really appreciated the instructor's positive messages and encouragement!

I found this class very useful. The instructor presented the material in a straight-forward and easy-to-digest manner. I really feel ready to present a new resume to potential employers.

I thought that this course was awesome! It helped me with so many questions that I had in regards to my resume! Plus, any questions that I had the instructor always answered them right away and gave me suggestions on how to improve my resume. It was a very helpful class and I can't wait to start sending out my resume with confidence!

My resume is now much more effectively put together, more concise, better looking, and more easily read than before. Thanks for the information that allowed me to fix it up.

Thanks, this really helped! I even have an interview already!

This was a GREAT workshop. The lesson material was very well presented. The supplemental information was extremely helpful and I will be able to use many of the sites in the future. I'm very glad I made this investment. I am now more sure of how to present my "proposal" to prospective employers.

Working in an employment office - this has been very helpful to me in working with applicants who are doing resumes. Thank you. The web sites were good for me to refer applicants to.

I just wanted to thank you for this great and very informative class. This was my first online course and I enjoyed it very much...I learned more than I originally expected. Thank you again for sharing your wisdom with us!

How to Conduct a Successful Resume Writing Workshop

Buddy Shay

How to Write a Resume for Master of Public Administration

A successful resume workshop should explain the different types of resumes with specific examples. It should also discuss how to include the most important elements that highlight a job candidate's qualifications and accomplishments.

Provide Visual Aids and Handouts

Make sure you have all your materials before beginning the session. If you have access to the right technology, create a presentation using a program like PowerPoint so your audience can follow along as you speak. If not, utilize your local print shop to create visual aids on poster board. Remember that your presentation or visual aids should only contain highlights of your session, not every detail. Handouts covering important points allow the audience to take something home. Finally, print out sample resumes: one using chronological organization, one using functional organization and one using a combination of the two.

Describe the Sections

During the presentation, start with the basics. The University of California, Davis' Internship and Career Center lists three essential sections in addition to the heading: education, experience and skills. Define each section and teach the audience what to include. For example, the education section highlights a candidate’s degrees and academic accomplishments, such as making the dean’s list or a high GPA. The work experience section shows the candidate’s job history and career accomplishments, such as high sales numbers or leading a project. It is important to emphasize accomplishments, not just job duties. The skills section points out job-related skills that might not show up anywhere else, such as proficiency with computer programs or languages spoken. Candidates should structure the resumes to highlight their best qualifications. Other sections, such as professional organizations, may also be included.

Explain Chronological Versus Functional

Describe different organizational patterns and their benefits. The UC Davis' career center points out three possibilities -- chronological, functional and a combination of the two. The chronological structure works best for those who are continuing their careers and whose previous experience is their best selling point, such as someone moving from management at one company to management at a different company. It lists the candidate's experience in order from most recent to least recent. The functional structure is ideal for those beginning new careers, such as recent college graduates, who want to show that they have the necessary skills and talent even if they lack relevant job experience. It is organized by skill set. Others prefer to combine the two approaches to show that while they are changing career paths, they do have relevant work experience. Provide your audience with general formatting tips. The University of South Carolina reminds users to avoid generic templates and to use 10- or 12-point Times New Roman or Arial fonts. You can also explain how to use underlining, bold, italics and bullets to highlight important points. The resume should have plenty of white space and appeal to the eye. The UC Davis career center says resumes should not be more than one page long, for someone without much experience, and never longer than two pages. Your audience should hold their resumes at arm’s length to see their works’ visual impact. Remind them to use action verbs to give their work panache. For example, they should say “I directed” an activity instead of “I was the director.” Finally, recommend they use 20-pound resume paper for physical copies and the correct type of file for online submissions. Reserve time at the end of the workshop for a question-and-answer session.

Allstate talks of return to California home market, pending legal reform

Insurer says if the state changes regulations today, it would write new policies tomorrow

Allstate Talks of Return to California Home Insurance Market

Allstate is holding its toe over the California insurance market — but will resume writing new homeowner policies only if the state enacts regulations demanded by the industry.

The Illinois-based insurance firm indicated at a public workshop held by the California Department of Insurance that it’s getting ready to resume writing new policies in the state, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

The state’s fourth-largest home insurer stopped writing new homeowner policies in November 2022 because of wildfire risk, the cost of rebuilding homes and the rising price of reinsurance, or insurance for insurers. The company continues to renew existing policies.

In June, Allstate received a go-ahead to hike homeowner premiums in California by 4 percent, but said it had no plans to reverse its decision to stop writing new policies in the state.

Now it has reconsidered because of a pending regulatory overhaul.

Once California enacts a slew of insurance regulations, “Allstate will begin writing new homeowner insurance policies in nearly every corner of California,” Gerald Zimmerman, the company’s senior vice president of government and industry relations, said at the workshop.

“If the regulations were in effect today, we would begin selling new homeowner insurance policies tomorrow.”

Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara has created a Sustainable Insurance Strategy —  the largest insurance reform in the state in more than 30 years — to lure insurers back to the market.

Allstate didn’t give a timeline for when it could resume writing new policies, but said in a statement it would “first need to be able to fully reflect the cost of providing protection to customers.”

The state Department of Insurance plans to enact all regulations by December, though it could take longer for insurers to take advantage of the reforms.

The regulation strategy comes as a trade-off,  according to Harvey Rosenfield, founder of nonprofit Consumer Watchdog. Insurers may come back, but with much higher rates.

Allstate insures about 350,000 homeowners in the state, along with nearly a million drivers , Zimmerman said.

It’s one of many large and small insurers that have either stopped writing new policies or left California, citing rising costs and risk.

It’s also the first major insurer that stopped writing new policies to publicly announce plans to ink new policies in response to coming reforms, according to Rosenfield.

State Farm, California’s largest home insurer, stopped writing new policies in May. This month, Tokio Marine America Insurance and Trans Pacific Insurance announced plans to withdraw from the state beginning in July.

The exodus adds to a growing list of major insurers across the Golden State that are ending or whittling down coverage during heightened risks posed by wildfires and other natural disasters fueled by climate change.

A few weeks ago, State Farm General Insurance said it would not renew 72,000 policies in July, nine months after announcing it would stop offering new coverage.

Other insurance companies have either paused new policies or will no longer offer new ones, including Allstate , The Hartford, Farmers Insurance and United Services Automobile Association.

— Dana Bartholomew

Allstate can raise rates 4%, not enough for new homeowner policies

80 years since the First Congress of Soviet Writers

Delegates of the First Congress of Soviet Writers in the Pillar Hall of the House of Unions in Moscow, on August 1934. Source: RIA Novosti

At the beginning of the 1930s Stalin decided to create unions representing every different creative profession. The official reason, as voiced by writer Maxim Gorky, was to allow greater unity of creative vision and a harmony between the individual's creative aims and the overall “creative working energies of the country.”

This idea of uniting for one great aim – furthering the revolution – was just a smokescreen, however. In reality, these organizations were a means for Stalin to achieve his political aims. He realized that he could easily control and censor single unions and force them to produce the kind of art that he approved of.

A lavish setting for controversy

The early 1930s were tough years for the Soviet economy, but the First Congress had a budget of 1.2 million rubles – equivalent to the annual salary of 754 factory workers – and was attended by 591 delegates from 52 countries. The government covered all the delegates' expenses and provided a full program of excursions. The location was the Pillar Hall of the House of Unions, which was decked out with portraits of famous Russian writers and poets.

Attendees at the congress included Boris Pasternak, the foremost Soviet poet of the time, the “Red Count” Alexei Tolstoy, a nobleman who adjusted to the demands of Soviet power, future Nobel laureate Mikhail Sholokhov, and leading children's author Korney Chukovsky.

When ideology interfered with children's literature

Maxim Gorky gave a keynote lecture to close the event on September 1. He spoke about education, about uniting writers from the USSR's different republics, and laid out his vision for the development of Soviet literature. Gorky placed a great deal of responsibility on Soviet writers, describing them as “the great present and future of the Land of the Soviets.”

Gorky also placed heavy emphasis on politics. He criticized bourgeois life, attacked fascism, quoted Stalin and appealed directly to him, ending his speech by glorifying the leader. His words drew a mixed reaction: some writers agreed, while others criticized him for playing up to the government.

Nikolai Bukharin's speech also caused a stir. Bukharin, the editor-in-chief of the popular Isvestia newspaper, was an old Bolshevik who had been kicked out of the Politburo by Stalin a few years earlier. He spoke about Soviet poetry for three hours, referencing taboo Silver Age poets such as Nikolai Gumilev – who had been executed in 1921 – Alexander Blok and Andrei Bely. Considering that the congress was designed to further orthodox writing, this speech was not well-advised and probably hastened his downfall. Bukharin was executed a few years later.

Hypocrisy and insincerity

Andrei Zhdanov, Stalin's right-hand man, tried to convince the leader that everyone, including skeptics, had “liked the congress very much,” but a cursory look at the writers' correspondence – which the NKVD intercepted as part of their broad spying program – showed Stalin that this wasn't the case.

The secretary of the then Union of Writers, Alexander Scherbakov, wrote: “I could stand that only for half an hour. I felt sick and left.” Writer Mikhail Prishvin noted that the speeches were “unbearably dull,” while Isaak Babel felt that it was a “requiem for literature.” Boris Pasternak said he was disappointed that so much time was given over to politics rather than solving issues in literature, but he still found some of the arguments and debates interesting.

Kudankulam

In a scandal that was completely hushed up, the NKVD found a leaflet written by a group of anonymous Russian writers. Addressed to the foreign guests, it outlined the “supreme lie” that was both the congress and the Soviet Union and lamented the fact that there had been a total lack of free speech in the country for almost two decades. “The USSR's network of informers is so comprehensive that even at home we often avoid speaking our minds.”

For such a massive event, the congress only made minor ripples in society. Several newspapers published transcripts of the speeches but didn't add any analysis. Many writers left Moscow after the event, going on vacation or supposedly to start work on new projects.

The lack of discussion and literary news led Zhdanov to complain that it seemed like the participants had taken a vow of silence, and the Party even published a decree that there should be more press coverage of the event. With hindsight, it seems likely that many writers simply didn't want to lie about their true opinion of the congress or put themselves at great risk by criticizing a government-approved event.

A lasting impact

The congress wasn't all negative. It gave young foreign writers the chance to visit the Soviet Union and gave exposure to writers from the Soviet republics. Many such authors were translated into Russian for the first time and gained a new readership. A notable success at the congress was Dagestani poet Suleiman Stalski, who Gorky introduced as “the Homer of the 20th century.”

When writing legends worked as doctors, journalists and cab drivers

The congress marked a turning point in Russian literature. It formulated the principles of a new style, socialist realism, which, in essence, meant glorifying the Communist Party and nothing else. Originally, the congress was supposed to take place every three years, but it was postponed many times. In fact, the next event was in 1954, after Stalin's death. This was no coincidence: one congress was enough for Stalin to achieve his goal of bringing writers to heel.

A third of the original delegates died in the 20 years between the first and second congresses. Some died from natural causes, and others were killed during the war. However, the overwhelming majority were executed or died in prison or labor camps.

There were only eight congresses between 1934 and 1986, and they increasingly became formal events with almost no influence on Soviet culture. The First Congress was unique in its own way – it was the first and last successful attempt to unite all the writers of one country.
