India is a vast country with second largest population and seventh largest land area in the world. The population of India is more than 1.2 billion.

There are 29 states mainly on the basis of linguistic lines. There are wide variety of languages and that of culture, festivals, dress and mode of living is even greater.

There lies cultural unity among Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, Christians, Buddhists and other communities in India.

On the north of India there are Himalayan mountain ranges. It protects India as its guardian. There is Indian Ocean, Bay of Bengal and Arabian Ocean in the south, south-east and south-west respectively.

The highest point in India lies in the Kanchenjunga mountains. The longest river is River Ganga.

India has a tri-colored national flag. The three colors are saffron, white and green. The Ashok Chakra in the center of the India flag denotes righteousness.

The national anthem and song are “Jana Gana Mana” and “Vande Mataram” respectively. In the National Emblem, there are four lions standing back to back denoting courage and strength.

The civilization of Harappa and Indus Valley in India is believed to be more than 4000 years old. The Rig Vedic period started at around 1700 B.C. The country India is a secular democratic nation. There is a parliamentary type of government where the President is only the nominal head of the country however Prime Minister becomes the real head. All the powers are conferred on the Prime Minister.

In this country, people are having the right to elect their own representative. The freedom of speech, to live, to speak any language and follow any religion is enjoyed by the people of India. The citizens of the nation are having all the basic rights.

Villages: as Strength of India

Villages depict the picture of real India. More than 60% population of India resides in our villages. Many people although they are living in cities but have their main origin from villages. They come out for education and better opportunities. The farmers are the real pride of our country. They do a lot of labour to grow crops. The entire nation is getting food to eat because of our farmers who are continuously working hard in the fields.

The culture we have is being followed from ancient times. It is carried on from generation to generation. The vast Indian culture and traditions are best depicted by the Villages of India. People living in villages perform different rituals which have a connection with their ancestors. There are different festivals celebrated by the people of the village according to the tradition. They wear traditional Indian attire like sari and dhoti kurta.

The economy of India is greatly dependent on the agricultural sector. People visiting India from other countries as tourists become fascinated by our culture. They also wear dresses which are worn by people of India.

India has been a land of several freedom fighters like Subhash Chandra Bose, Bhagat Singh, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Mahatma Gandhi, Pt. Jawaharlal Lal Nehru, etc. Their sacrifices and deeds in making our country an independent nation are speechless.

Saree for Women and Dhoti-kurta for men is the traditional attire of India, but the clothes worn by people of different regions in India differs. The people living in hilly areas usually wear a woollen dress and long coats. The women’s cover their head by a scarf.

Variety of Food in India

There are different kinds of food recipes served in different regions of India. It is because of the varied climatic conditions, soil composition and texture in different parts of India. It is not necessary that everywhere in India rice can be grown. Thus, the food recipe depends upon the availability of the crops grown in that particular region.

There are many fruits also grow well in certain climatic conditions. Example- Apples grow well in a cold climate. Indian food is spicy and tasty. People use the local spices grown by them to add a taste to the food.

India experiences varied climatic conditions. It is the country which is blessed by six types of seasons. The northern areas of India have a colder climate. The southern part is having a tropical climate. The winters are cold and summers are hotter.

India is a very big country. India is the seventh largest country in the world. From Kashmir in the north to Kanniyakumari in the south, it extends for about 3200 km. From Gujarat in the west to Arunachal Pradesh in the east, it extends for about 3000 km.

India is the second most populated country in the world, after China. New Delhi is the capital of India. The Central Government in New Delhi takes acre of the welfare and security of the people of India.

India is divided into 29 States and 7 Union Territories. The main offices of the State Governments are located in their respective capital cities.

A great variety of landforms is found in India. There are mountains, plains, rocky lands and sandy deserts. India also has many rivers, lakes and islands.

Mountains and Hills

The mountain wall of the Himalayas stretches in the form of an arc from Kashmir in the west and narrows down to Arunachal Pradesh in the east.

Many rivers, like the Ganga, the Yamuna and the Brahmaputra have their sources in the Himalayas. These rivers flow throughout the year, as they are fed by the melting snow of the Himalayas.

They are the Aravalli and Vindhya ranges in Central India. We have the Satpura range, the Western and Eastern Ghats.

To the south of the Himalayas are the plains of India. The Ganga, the Brahmaputra and the Yamuna rivers flow through these plains. These plains are flat lands with fertile soil.

These plains are thickly populated. Here the summers are hot and the winters cold.

A desert is an area covered with sand and rocks stones which receive very little rainfall.

The north-western part of India is a rocky and sandy desert called the Thar Desert or the Great Indian Desert.

The southern part of India is a Peninsula. (A peninsula is a piece of land surrounded by sea on the three sides.)

A plateau is a high land with a flat surface. The central and southern part of India is a plateau called the Deccan Plateau. It lies between Ghats to the west and the Eastern Ghats to the east.

India has two groups of islands. The groups of islands in the Bay of Bengal are the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The Lakshadweep Islands are in the Arabian Sea.

Clothes we wear

The clothes of our people differ from state to state. India being a very big country, there is a wide variety of clothes that our people wear.

Common clothes for Women

The saree is the most common wear among India women. The style of wearing it differs from state to state. Other popular clothes for women are the salwar-kameez and the ghagra-choli with a dupatta or odhani.

Women also wear pants/jeans with shirts or tops. Girls wear frocks or pinafore dresses.

Common clothes for Men

Men in India usually wear trousers or jeans with shirts/T-shirts. Dhoti-kurta, kurta-pyjama or kurta-lungi is also worn in different states.

Boys/men do wear half pants/Bermudas with T-shirts/shirts

Many festivals are celebrated in India. There are three kinds of festivals. Some are national, some are religious and some festivals are linked with the seasons and the harvesting of crops. Festivals are celebrated in different ways in different parts of India.

Festivals of India include Holi, Diwali, Christmas, Eid-ul-Fitr, Ganesh Chaturthi, Janmashtami and Raksha Bandhan , National festival includes Independence Day , Republic Day, and Gandhi Jayanti.

In India harvest festivals are too celebrated such as Pongal, Onam, Baisakhi.

The nation is culturally diverse with 22 major languages and nearly 122 other languages while having people of different races and ethnicities within its premises.

E xams are a stressful affair and they require smart strategies and techniques to excel. While in-depth learning is crucial, different types of questions demand specific strategies and approaches for solving.

Exams may appear in several formats including multiple choice questions, short answers and essays, each requiring different techniques of answering.

Below is a comprehensive guide to solving exams with different types of question patterns:

TIPS TO ANSWER MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTIONS

The first and foremost thing to do is to read the questions properly. Often, students miss out on important details due to a lack of focus. Paying attention to each and every piece of information and reading with attention is crucial.
After reading the question, try to predict the answer without referring to the given options. This increases your chances of selecting the correct answer through educated guessing.
Using the process of elimination can do wonders. In this method, you eliminate the options you believe are incorrect. This narrows down your choices and aids in identifying the correct response.
Paying attention to words such as 'always,' 'never,' 'sometimes,' 'most,' 'only,' 'many,' 'but,' and 'often' can help us better understand the sentence. These words tend to alter the meaning of the sentence and hence should be paid attention to and read properly.
Â Understanding concepts thoroughly enables you to grasp the context of questions accurately and answer them correctly.

TIPS TO ANSWER SHORT QUESTIONS

Read the question properly and comprehend it well. Understand whether you need to give a definition, provide examples, write a brief summary or offer comparisons.
Write the answer to the point, avoiding unnecessary explanations and using keywords. This increases your chances of scoring higher.
Use simple language and avoid complex terms, as they can confuse the examiner. The simpler your answer, the higher your score.
Write your answers in a logical and organised manner. Structure your answers with separate paragraphs, bullet points, flowcharts, tables, etc., as this makes it easier for the examiner to read and understand your answer.
During the preparatory phase, use colourful pens, flashcards, charts, and drawings to learn concepts well. This method helps in recollecting the answers during exams.
Indulge in self-testing methods by practicing sample question papers, demo tests, and solving previous year question papers to understand the probable questions and the exam pattern.
Having a time management strategy in place is important. Allocate time for different types of questions and try to solve them within the given time frame.

The Spectacle of the Ambani Wedding Event Reveals India’s Inequality

Rihanna, Mark Zuckerberg, bejeweled elephants and 5,500 drones. Those were some of the highlights of what is likely the most ostentatious pre-wedding ceremony the modern world has ever seen.

On a long weekend in early March, members of the global elite gathered to celebrate the impending nuptials of the billionaire business titan Mukesh Ambani’s youngest son, Anant, and Radhika Merchant. Monarchs, politicians and the ultrawealthy, including Bill Gates and Ivanka Trump, descended on an oil refinery city in the western Indian state of Gujarat for an event so extravagant, you’d be forgiven for thinking it was, well, a wedding. But that will take place in July. For the long windup to the big day, some of Bollywood’s biggest stars, though invited as guests, took to the stage to sing and dance in what amounted to a bending of the knee to India’s most powerful family.

Watching the event, I couldn’t help thinking of the 1911 durbar, or royal reception, when King George V was proclaimed emperor of India. Once India won its independence from Britain in 1947, it committed itself to becoming a democratic welfare state — an audacious experiment that resulted in what is now the world’s largest democracy. But in advance of this year’s general election, expected to begin in April, the Ambani-Merchant matrimonial extravaganza shows us where true power in India now lies: with a handful of people whose untrammeled wealth and influence have elevated them to the position of India’s shadow leaders.

It’s difficult to imagine the Ambani-Merchant wedding event in an India that isn’t ruled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It’s true that the Ambanis have been wealthy for years now and that accusations of favorable treatment from government authorities are not unique to this family or the Modi government. But no other prime minister in India’s history has been so openly aligned with big business, and never before has the concentration of wealth been more apparent. India’s richest 1 percent now own more than 40 percent of the country’s wealth, according to Oxfam. The country has the world’s largest number of poor, at 228.9 million . And according to a newly published study looking at 92 low- and middle-income countries, India had the third-highest percentage of “zero food” children — babies between 6 months and 23 months old who had gone a day or more without food other than breast milk at the time they were surveyed. Oxfam has described this new India as the “survival of the richest.”

For the uberwealthy, this presents a no-holds-barred opportunity to exert their power and influence. In 2017, Mr. Modi introduced a fund-raising mechanism called electoral bonds to allow unlimited anonymous donations to political parties. In the five years that followed, the prime minister’s Bharatiya Janata Party received $635 million in contributions through such bonds, 5.5 times as much as its closest rival, the Congress Party. The 2019 Indian general elections cost $8.6 billion, surpassing the estimated $6.5 billion spent on the 2016 U.S. presidential and congressional elections.

Analysis by three independent media organizations in India published on March 14 revealed that a company called Qwik Supply Chains purchased bonds in the scheme worth $50 million. One of the company’s three directors, reporters later uncovered, is also a director at several subsidiaries of Reliance, Mukesh Ambani’s megacompany. A spokesperson for Reliance said that Qwik is not a Reliance subsidiary and did not respond to further questioning from Reuters . The Indian Supreme Court has since struck down the electoral bond mechanism, calling it unconstitutional , but the delay in addressing the matter has most likely come too late to change the outcome of the forthcoming election, which is widely considered all but certain to go in Mr. Modi’s favor.

And judging by the omnipresence of Mr. Modi’s image — the state-funded publicity exercises focused on exalting him, the constant advertisements in newspapers and on TV, his image plastered on billboards and life-size cutouts everywhere from train stations to public parks — even those who wish to vote for other candidates might be forgiven for thinking there are none. With the help of a small group of business tycoons, led by Mr. Ambani, the prime minister has dominated the Indian media landscape. Since Mr. Modi came to power, Mr. Ambani has invested heavily in the media and now owns more than 70 outlets, including India’s biggest media conglomerate, which are followed by 800 million weekly viewers. Many of these outlets have been trumpeting Mr. Modi’s credentials and heaping praise on him.

Mr. Ambani has been relentless in expressing his gratitude to Mr. Modi for working in step with Reliance. In January, Mr. Ambani hailed Mr. Modi as the “most successful prime minister in India’s history.” Later that month, the tycoon’s family traveled to Ayodhya for the inauguration of the Ram Mandir temple complex, which is being built on the highly contentious grounds of a functioning mosque that was destroyed by a Hindu mob in 1992. The construction of the Ram Mandir is the epitome of Mr. Modi’s tenure, which has been defined by a violent and divisive Hindu majoritarianism. Mr. Ambani donated $300,000 toward the temple costs.

Mr. Modi was reportedly not present during the Ambani wedding event, leading to speculation on social media that he wanted to avoid further accusations of cronyism in an election year. But his hand was evident. Anant Ambani told the press that he in part chose his family’s hometown Jamnagar as his pre-wedding venue to honor the prime minister’s “Wed in India” call for young Indians to marry at home rather than abroad. Jamnagar is the location of Mukesh Ambani’s oil refinery, which is the largest in the world. And in a brazen misuse of public resources, the government temporarily turned the city’s small domestic airport into a designated international airport, clearing the way for guests to land their private aircraft. The government airport was expanded, staff numbers were increased , and the Indian Air Force deployed additional military personnel — all in the service of one event for one family.

Some Indians viewed the arrival of the world’s elite on their shores as a sign of their country’s growing prominence in the world. The occasion was treated as a national event, with “breaking news” and live feeds of the arrival and then departure of every celebrity, of the more than 1,000 guests who stayed in luxury tents and were provided with makeup artists and sari drapers and were reportedly served 2,500 dishes and of the lion-shaped diamond brooch on Anant Ambani’s suit and his Richard Mille wristwatch, worth an estimated $1 million, which even Mr. Zuckerberg appeared to covet .

But what viewers saw that long weekend in March wasn’t India at all but the playground of an oligarch. The festivities took place weeks before a national election, at a time when India’s democracy is teetering on an edge. Violence against Muslims, Christians and Dalits has been normalized. The harassment of journalists, the incarceration of human rights activists and police violence against protesters have all but wrenched the country from the path chosen by its founding leaders, who wished the people of India to enjoy a “sovereign, socialist, secular, democratic republic.” In 2022, Freedom House, the nonprofit organization that tracks democratic governance, downgraded India from “free” to “partly free.” This status remains unchanged.

The Ambanis are entitled to spend their money on whatever they want (except, perhaps, on electoral bonds). And this latest celebration, while lavish, wasn’t entirely atypical in India, where weddings are viewed as an opportunity to demonstrate status. The giddy young couple at the center of the spectacle are charming: Ms. Merchant is a trained classical dancer; her fiancé is fond of animals. It would be churlish not to celebrate their happiness.

But if the 1911 Delhi durbar was a symbol of British imperial power, then the Ambani pre-wedding event in Jamnagar symbolized the rise of Mr. Modi’s oligarchs. And if these few are thriving in their symbiotic relationship with the Indian prime minister, it comes at the cost of the nation’s experiment with building a democratic welfare state. That’s nothing to celebrate.

The ideal method to develop this habit is to launch a cleaning campaign in our home, kitchen, living space, and community. It is imperative that we preserve the natural splendour and purity of our surroundings before it is too late.

Clean India Green India is a nationwide effort launched by the Indian government. Mahatma Gandhi, father of the nation, also had a vision for a clean India. People are what make up a nation. Therefore, it is essential to alter public perceptions of the fight against sanitation. Change ought to be implemented logically. Budgets and programmes that prioritise Panchayats and rural communities' sanitation needs should be sufficient. Every Indian citizen should have the vision of a Clean India, Green India. The mission is the ideal development movement for India since it promotes sustainable growth in the nation.

5 facts about americans and sports.

Many Americans participate in sports in some way, whether they play, cheer on their favorite teams or gamble on outcomes.

Ahead of March Madness – the annual men’s and women’s college basketball tournaments – here are five facts about Americans’ experiences with and interest in sports, drawn from Pew Research Center surveys.

Ahead of this year’s NCAA Division I basketball tournaments, Pew Research Center explored Americans’ experiences with and interest in sports.

This analysis is based on recent Center surveys. Links to these surveys, including information about the field dates, sample sizes and other methodological details, are available in the text.

About half of Americans (48%) say they took part in organized, competitive sports in high school or college, according to a February 2022 Center survey . This includes 39% who participated in high school, 2% who participated in college and 7% who participated at both levels.

Men are more likely than women to say they played high school or college sports (56% vs. 41%).

There are also notable age differences among women: Adults under 50 are more likely than their older counterparts to have played high school or college sports (48% vs. 33%). These age differences among women may be partly due to Title IX , which became law in 1972. The law prohibits schools that receive federal funding from discriminating based on sex – including in the athletic opportunities they provide.

Most Americans who played sports in high school or college say their athletic experiences improved their physical health and confidence, according to the same survey. Some 82% of adults who played sports say doing so had a very or somewhat positive impact on their physical health, including 46% who say it had a very positive impact. And 79% say playing sports had a positive impact on their confidence or self-esteem, with 38% saying it had a very positive impact.

A smaller share of these Americans say playing sports had a positive impact on their job or career opportunities. Still, the share who say this far outpaces the share who say it had a negative impact (44% vs. 3%).

In all three areas – physical health, confidence and job opportunities – former college athletes are more likely than former high school athletes to say that playing sports had a very positive impact.

Nearly four-in-ten Americans (38%) follow professional or college sports at least somewhat closely, according to a 2023 Center survey . This includes 16% who follow sports extremely or very closely. And 7% of U.S. adults are what might be called “superfans”: They follow sports extremely or very closely and talk about sports with other people at least daily.

About seven-in-ten Americans who follow sports at least somewhat closely say a major reason they do so is to cheer for a specific team or teams (71%) or to be entertained (69%). Much smaller shares say a major reason is to cheer for a specific player or players (32%), because someone in their family follows sports (23%), or for one of the other reasons included in the survey.

Still, a majority of Americans (62%) say they follow sports not too or not at all closely. Among this group, 69% say a major reason they don’t follow sports is that they’re just not interested.

When asked to choose one sport as “America’s sport,” more than half of U.S. adults (53%) choose football, according to the same survey . Another 27% say it’s baseball, while 8% pick basketball, 3% pick soccer, 3% choose auto racing and 1% choose hockey.

Football is the most common choice in every major demographic group, but there are some differences by race and ethnicity. For example, White Americans are more likely than those in other racial and ethnic groups to say baseball is America’s sport. Hispanic Americans are more likely than others to pick soccer, and Black and Asian Americans are more likely to choose basketball.

In a July 2022 Center survey , 19% of Americans said they had bet money on sports in the past year. This includes betting with friends and family, in person at a casino or other gambling venue, or online with a betting app. Men, adults under 50, and Black and Hispanic adults were particularly likely to say they’d bet on sports in the previous year.

The survey was conducted more than four years after the Supreme Court effectively legalized commercial sports betting in the United States . Most adults (57%) said the legalization of sports betting in much of the country was neither a good nor bad thing for society, while 34% said it was a bad thing. Only 8% said it was a good thing.

Despite the widespread availability of commercial sports gambling today, betting rarely motivates people to follow sports , according to our 2023 survey. Among those who follow sports at least somewhat closely, 83% say betting is not a reason for doing so. Another 12% say betting is a minor reason they follow sports, and just 4% say it’s a major reason.
