To be truly brilliant, an essay needs to utilise the right language. You could make a great point, but if it’s not intelligently articulated, you almost needn’t have bothered.

Developing the language skills to build an argument and to write persuasively is crucial if you’re to write outstanding essays every time. In this article, we’re going to equip you with the words and phrases you need to write a top-notch essay, along with examples of how to utilise them.

It’s by no means an exhaustive list, and there will often be other ways of using the words and phrases we describe that we won’t have room to include, but there should be more than enough below to help you make an instant improvement to your essay-writing skills.

General explaining

Let’s start by looking at language for general explanations of complex points.

1. In order to

Usage: “In order to” can be used to introduce an explanation for the purpose of an argument. Example: “In order to understand X, we need first to understand Y.”

2. In other words

Usage: Use “in other words” when you want to express something in a different way (more simply), to make it easier to understand, or to emphasise or expand on a point. Example: “Frogs are amphibians. In other words, they live on the land and in the water.”

3. To put it another way

Usage: This phrase is another way of saying “in other words”, and can be used in particularly complex points, when you feel that an alternative way of wording a problem may help the reader achieve a better understanding of its significance. Example: “Plants rely on photosynthesis. To put it another way, they will die without the sun.”

4. That is to say

Usage: “That is” and “that is to say” can be used to add further detail to your explanation, or to be more precise. Example: “Whales are mammals. That is to say, they must breathe air.”

5. To that end

Usage: Use “to that end” or “to this end” in a similar way to “in order to” or “so”. Example: “Zoologists have long sought to understand how animals communicate with each other. To that end, a new study has been launched that looks at elephant sounds and their possible meanings.”

Adding additional information to support a point

Students often make the mistake of using synonyms of “and” each time they want to add further information in support of a point they’re making, or to build an argument . Here are some cleverer ways of doing this.

6. Moreover

Usage: Employ “moreover” at the start of a sentence to add extra information in support of a point you’re making. Example: “Moreover, the results of a recent piece of research provide compelling evidence in support of…”

7. Furthermore

Usage:This is also generally used at the start of a sentence, to add extra information. Example: “Furthermore, there is evidence to suggest that…”

8. What’s more

Usage: This is used in the same way as “moreover” and “furthermore”. Example: “What’s more, this isn’t the only evidence that supports this hypothesis.”

9. Likewise

Usage: Use “likewise” when you want to talk about something that agrees with what you’ve just mentioned. Example: “Scholar A believes X. Likewise, Scholar B argues compellingly in favour of this point of view.”

10. Similarly

Usage: Use “similarly” in the same way as “likewise”. Example: “Audiences at the time reacted with shock to Beethoven’s new work, because it was very different to what they were used to. Similarly, we have a tendency to react with surprise to the unfamiliar.”

11. Another key thing to remember

Usage: Use the phrase “another key point to remember” or “another key fact to remember” to introduce additional facts without using the word “also”. Example: “As a Romantic, Blake was a proponent of a closer relationship between humans and nature. Another key point to remember is that Blake was writing during the Industrial Revolution, which had a major impact on the world around him.”

12. As well as

Usage: Use “as well as” instead of “also” or “and”. Example: “Scholar A argued that this was due to X, as well as Y.”

13. Not only… but also

Usage: This wording is used to add an extra piece of information, often something that’s in some way more surprising or unexpected than the first piece of information. Example: “Not only did Edmund Hillary have the honour of being the first to reach the summit of Everest, but he was also appointed Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire.”

14. Coupled with

Usage: Used when considering two or more arguments at a time. Example: “Coupled with the literary evidence, the statistics paint a compelling view of…”

15. Firstly, secondly, thirdly…

Usage: This can be used to structure an argument, presenting facts clearly one after the other. Example: “There are many points in support of this view. Firstly, X. Secondly, Y. And thirdly, Z.

16. Not to mention/to say nothing of

Usage: “Not to mention” and “to say nothing of” can be used to add extra information with a bit of emphasis. Example: “The war caused unprecedented suffering to millions of people, not to mention its impact on the country’s economy.”

Words and phrases for demonstrating contrast

When you’re developing an argument, you will often need to present contrasting or opposing opinions or evidence – “it could show this, but it could also show this”, or “X says this, but Y disagrees”. This section covers words you can use instead of the “but” in these examples, to make your writing sound more intelligent and interesting.

17. However

Usage: Use “however” to introduce a point that disagrees with what you’ve just said. Example: “Scholar A thinks this. However, Scholar B reached a different conclusion.”

18. On the other hand

Usage: Usage of this phrase includes introducing a contrasting interpretation of the same piece of evidence, a different piece of evidence that suggests something else, or an opposing opinion. Example: “The historical evidence appears to suggest a clear-cut situation. On the other hand, the archaeological evidence presents a somewhat less straightforward picture of what happened that day.”

19. Having said that

Usage: Used in a similar manner to “on the other hand” or “but”. Example: “The historians are unanimous in telling us X, an agreement that suggests that this version of events must be an accurate account. Having said that, the archaeology tells a different story.”

20. By contrast/in comparison

Usage: Use “by contrast” or “in comparison” when you’re comparing and contrasting pieces of evidence. Example: “Scholar A’s opinion, then, is based on insufficient evidence. By contrast, Scholar B’s opinion seems more plausible.”

21. Then again

Usage: Use this to cast doubt on an assertion. Example: “Writer A asserts that this was the reason for what happened. Then again, it’s possible that he was being paid to say this.”

22. That said

Usage: This is used in the same way as “then again”. Example: “The evidence ostensibly appears to point to this conclusion. That said, much of the evidence is unreliable at best.”

Usage: Use this when you want to introduce a contrasting idea. Example: “Much of scholarship has focused on this evidence. Yet not everyone agrees that this is the most important aspect of the situation.”

Adding a proviso or acknowledging reservations

Sometimes, you may need to acknowledge a shortfalling in a piece of evidence, or add a proviso. Here are some ways of doing so.

24. Despite this

Usage: Use “despite this” or “in spite of this” when you want to outline a point that stands regardless of a shortfalling in the evidence. Example: “The sample size was small, but the results were important despite this.”

25. With this in mind

Usage: Use this when you want your reader to consider a point in the knowledge of something else. Example: “We’ve seen that the methods used in the 19th century study did not always live up to the rigorous standards expected in scientific research today, which makes it difficult to draw definite conclusions. With this in mind, let’s look at a more recent study to see how the results compare.”

26. Provided that

Usage: This means “on condition that”. You can also say “providing that” or just “providing” to mean the same thing. Example: “We may use this as evidence to support our argument, provided that we bear in mind the limitations of the methods used to obtain it.”

27. In view of/in light of

Usage: These phrases are used when something has shed light on something else. Example: “In light of the evidence from the 2013 study, we have a better understanding of…”

28. Nonetheless

Usage: This is similar to “despite this”. Example: “The study had its limitations, but it was nonetheless groundbreaking for its day.”

29. Nevertheless

Usage: This is the same as “nonetheless”. Example: “The study was flawed, but it was important nevertheless.”

30. Notwithstanding

Usage: This is another way of saying “nonetheless”. Example: “Notwithstanding the limitations of the methodology used, it was an important study in the development of how we view the workings of the human mind.”

Giving examples

Good essays always back up points with examples, but it’s going to get boring if you use the expression “for example” every time. Here are a couple of other ways of saying the same thing.

31. For instance

Example: “Some birds migrate to avoid harsher winter climates. Swallows, for instance, leave the UK in early winter and fly south…”

32. To give an illustration

Example: “To give an illustration of what I mean, let’s look at the case of…”

Signifying importance

When you want to demonstrate that a point is particularly important, there are several ways of highlighting it as such.

33. Significantly

Usage: Used to introduce a point that is loaded with meaning that might not be immediately apparent. Example: “Significantly, Tacitus omits to tell us the kind of gossip prevalent in Suetonius’ accounts of the same period.”

34. Notably

Usage: This can be used to mean “significantly” (as above), and it can also be used interchangeably with “in particular” (the example below demonstrates the first of these ways of using it). Example: “Actual figures are notably absent from Scholar A’s analysis.”

35. Importantly

Usage: Use “importantly” interchangeably with “significantly”. Example: “Importantly, Scholar A was being employed by X when he wrote this work, and was presumably therefore under pressure to portray the situation more favourably than he perhaps might otherwise have done.”

Summarising

You’ve almost made it to the end of the essay, but your work isn’t over yet. You need to end by wrapping up everything you’ve talked about, showing that you’ve considered the arguments on both sides and reached the most likely conclusion. Here are some words and phrases to help you.

36. In conclusion

Usage: Typically used to introduce the concluding paragraph or sentence of an essay, summarising what you’ve discussed in a broad overview. Example: “In conclusion, the evidence points almost exclusively to Argument A.”

37. Above all

Usage: Used to signify what you believe to be the most significant point, and the main takeaway from the essay. Example: “Above all, it seems pertinent to remember that…”

38. Persuasive

Usage: This is a useful word to use when summarising which argument you find most convincing. Example: “Scholar A’s point – that Constanze Mozart was motivated by financial gain – seems to me to be the most persuasive argument for her actions following Mozart’s death.”

39. Compelling

Usage: Use in the same way as “persuasive” above. Example: “The most compelling argument is presented by Scholar A.”

40. All things considered

Usage: This means “taking everything into account”. Example: “All things considered, it seems reasonable to assume that…”

Transition Words and Phrases

Transitioning from one argument to another is crucial for a good essay.

It’s important to guide your reader from one idea to the next so they don’t get lost or feel like you’re jumping around at random.

Transition phrases and linking words show your reader you’re about to move from one argument to the next, smoothing out their reading experience. They also make your writing look more professional.

Since the dawn of time, students have been starting essays too broadly. Your college admissions essays are about you, your experiences, your values, and your goals. So, starting with general statements like “Different cultures have different traditions and values” or “We have to be the change we want to see in the world” don’t center you as the topic of your essay. If you’re writing your essay about, say, your Polynesian identity and your love of Hula dance or the summer you spent making vats of soup for a food kitchen, jump right into sharing a vivid memory from those experiences instead.

4) Leading with a quote

“Can I start my college essay with a quote?” is one of the most common questions we get. The problem with starting with a quote is the same as starting too broadly: you don’t center yourself as the topic of your essay. Since college essays are short, the quote itself and the many sentences it will take to transition to the rest of your content will eat up precious word count. Unless it’s a deep-cut quote that’s highly particular to you and your niche interests, quotes anywhere in your essay can come across as cliché.

A stand-out college admissions essay will grab your reader’s attention and immediately give them a sense of who you are, what you value, and what’s unique about you. Trying to decide how to start a college essay? First, take a look at our guide to the Common App Prompts . Then, use one of these five techniques to brainstorm content:

1) Share a challenge you’ve overcome

Since college is all about growth and learning, one tried and true strategy is describing a challenge you’ve overcome that you’ve learned a lot from. Example:

For my first three months of middle school choir, I was nothing more than a ventriloquist’s dummy, mouthing words with no sound coming out. I was terrified to use my voice. Then, one fateful morning, Mrs. Garcia asked me to solo in front of the whole class.

A strong essay about a challenge you’ve overcome will explain who you were before, how you overcame the challenge, and who you are now. Taking this approach allows you to demonstrate that you’re able to rise to meet challenges, learn through difficulty, and apply yourself even when you’re uncomfortable. A word of warning though: avoid writing about very common challenges like pushing yourself to beat your cross-country time, studying for the SAT/ACT or other big tests, or transitioning from middle to high school. Since so many students share these experiences as common ground, these topics will make it hard to stand out from the crowd.

2) Show your funny side

Yes, humor works well in college essays! Poking fun at one of your quirks or (inconsequential) shortcomings can be a great way to reveal your personality. Example:

Every day, I begged. At bedtime, at breakfast, for my birthday, for Christmas—I begged for a skateboard. Mom said it was too dangerous, Dad thought they were too noisy, but still I dreamed of cruising the neighborhood and learning to ollie in our driveway. My 14th birthday was the day my begging finally ended. It was also the day I learned I have absolutely no sense of balance.

Opening with a humorous story paints a vivid picture of you right away, but where you take it from there matters. You probably wouldn’t want to write a whole essay about breaking your tailbone and this isn’t the right forum for a stand-up routine. But you could take an opening like this in a variety of directions that reveal more meaningful truths about you. For example, after this opener, this writer could go on to:

  • Talk about other new skills they tried that they were able to land better than an ollie.
  • Describe how they learned about balance in other avenues of their life.

3) Clear up a misconception about you

Although college essays are brief, you’ll want to squeeze in as much depth and breadth as you can. Starting by addressing an assumption or stereotype you’ve faced can be an efficient and engaging way to move past the superficial. Example:

Blonde. Four foot eight. Size five feet. Strangers and well-meaning friends sometimes offer me a booster seat or ask if I need help carrying heavy things. Little do they know I can deadlift 135 pounds. My first teen powerlifting competition is coming up this spring.

Clearing up a misconception allows you to surprise your admissions reader and share something meaningful about yourself in one stroke. When using this strategy, think about all the different layers of your identity. What assumptions do others make of you and what might casual acquaintances or strangers be surprised to learn? A word of warning: steer clear of being too critical of others. Although stereotypes and assumptions are difficult to bear, for this essay, you’ll want to focus on you —your accomplishments, skills, and passions—instead of others.

4) Invite us in

Are Shabbat dinners with your whole extended family the highlight of your week? Do you feel most alive when you’re at your keyboard composing a new song or when you’re at a Robotics Club meeting, throwing out wild design ideas with your team? When you invite us in, you’re letting your reader in on the places you’re most at home, most excited, or most yourself. Example:

When I was seven years old, my grandma sat me down at her sewing table and taught me how to sew back on the button that had popped off my sweater. I can still feel her hands on mine, showing me where to place the needle. It was the first of what became weekly lessons on backstitching, basting, hemming pants, and embroidery. I didn’t know it then, but it was the first day of my journey into fashion design.

To brainstorm for this technique, list experiences that have helped shape your values, goals, and interests. Think of things you do every week but also once-in-a-lifetime events. You’ll want to begin this essay by choosing one meaningful experience to share in the beginning of your essay. Use vivid details that help a reader imagine the experience for themselves and then explain why this experience matters to you.

5) Nerd out about a problem you’ve solved

If you’ve hit the library stacks to find the answer to a burning question, stayed after class to ask your teacher for more homework, worked with a student club to improve a campus issue, or concocted your own science experiment, this might be the essay tactic for you. Example:

As a volunteer at my local pet rescue, I surprised myself by becoming a crusader for birds. Dogs and cats were adopted all the time, but the parrots, cockatiels, and parakeets sat in their cages for ages, chattering away and waiting for their forever homes. I realized it was an issue of awareness: no one knew our shelter rescued birds. Thirty YouTube tutorials and one online digital marketing class later, I had developed a ten-step social media strategy.

A great way to share your unique interests, this technique lets you showcase the curiosity and eagerness to learn you’ll be bringing with you to college. To brainstorm for this essay, think of times when you’ve worked solo or with a team to discover something new or solve a tricky problem. As you write about this experience, describe the initial problem, any difficulties you encountered, and the strategies you used to find a solution.

We’ve covered essay content, but you may still be wondering how to start a college essay that grabs your reader’s attention. Here are three key style tips that will help breathe life into your writing:

1) Share a story

As you can probably tell from the examples above, we recommend starting your essay off with an engaging story. Before you tell a reader that you’re an introvert who also loves performing in musical theater, you’ll want to tell the tale of the first time you braved the spotlight. Before you explain that you plan to major in political science, describe the town hall meeting you attended in the 7 th grade that started it all.

2) Use vivid descriptions

When we read, we’re most engaged when we feel like we can clearly imagine the scene. To draw a reader in, use the same storytelling strategies that fiction writers use: sensory descriptions, concrete details, and passing time.

  • Sensory descriptions: Describe the smell of your mother’s biryani cooking on the stove, the temperature of the air at the start of your first half marathon. Sight, sound, smell, touch, taste. Engage as many of the five senses as you can.
  • Concrete details: Concrete details are particular descriptions of places, people, and objects. If you’re describing a service trip to Honduras, describe the buildings, streets, and food you ate so your reader can imagine it.
  • Passing time: Making time pass means ensuring you have a clear sense of the beginning, middle, and end of your story. To keep things clear, put your details in linear order and make sure to include temporal transitional phrases like “When I was six years old,” “Later, in high school,” and “Now, as I reflect back.”

3) Use your own voice

When you’re wondering how to start your college essay, it can be tempting to write in the same style you use for academic essays. But the college essay is a personal essay, not an essay for school. For this style of writing, you’ll want to be clear, thoughtful, and grammatically correct, but you’ll also want to be personable, engaging, and, most importantly, yourself. With that in mind, skip the SAT vocabulary words and opt for a more conversational tone instead.

33 Transition Words and Phrases

Transitional terms give writers the opportunity to prepare readers for a new idea, connecting the previous sentence to the next one.

Many transitional words are nearly synonymous: words that broadly indicate that “this follows logically from the preceding” include accordingly, therefore, and consequently . Words that mean “in addition to” include moreover, besides, and further . Words that mean “contrary to what was just stated” include however, nevertheless , and nonetheless .

Introduction.

The desire for one to employ him or herself is a dream that many people try to achieve in the early stages of life but how one can be his or her own boss depends on many factors. Starting up an own business is one of the few ways in which one can achieve this but creating a successful business requires a good combination of a good idea and the driving power to do it.

A successful business requires skills, experience, and ability to make a dream come true as most of the times it involves personal sacrifice particularly during the start up stage. When starting up a business it is necessary to conduct a feasibility study on how successful the business is likely to be under the existing conditions. The objective of this research is investigating how feasible and profitable is it to start a new business. The feasibility study involves among others the following:

Market Analysis

The question that comes to one’s mind when starting a business is whether there is a sustainable market for the product or service you want to offer.

Before one starts a business there is need to investigate whether there is a sustainable market for the goods or services that one wants to offer by assessing the consumers of your products, how many they are and the form they want the product to be in, the price the customers might be willing to pay for your products and whether the market is a permanent one or a seasonal one and the existence of both supplementary and complementary products to your goods and services.

After assessing the above and deeming the results positive then you can move into the next step of investigating who your competitor will be in the market.

Competition Analysis

Satisfaction that you have a reliable market is just the first step in the business development process. After you are satisfied that a reliable market exists, the availability of the market and the possible rivals you are likely to face in the market becomes the next big issue. This is done by analyzing who the direct and indirect competitors are.

The direct competitors are those individuals selling similar products as yours. A deeper knowledge of what they offer, charge, what they do well, and what they are not and the existence of any gaps that you may use to woo customers on your side is very important. Indirect competitors are those other business players who deal with complimentary products to the goods and services you want to offer.

The importance of studying these indirect competitors is that they may be a distraction to your customer pool by offering cheaper complementary products and thus causing a shift from your products to their products thus the necessity. After you have done the above analysis and the playground seems comfortable the next question that comes into your mind is how affordable the enterprise is.

Factors or Costs

Among the worst mistakes that any business entrepreneur can make is underestimating the start up costs and the operating capital required to run the business until the break-even position is achieved. It is always important to make accurate estimates as sources of extra capital in future may be limited. For example if one wants to start a French beans importing business it is very important to make accurate estimates of the required capital both for starting up to the point where the business will break even.

Calculating the set up costs and the working capital

Realistic forecasts boosts one’s confidence and the ability to meet own commitments. When you set the required costs straight it means you won’t require extra capital after the business has started and thus there are chances that the business may run successfully without shortages in the required running capital.

There are many types of costs that a business entrepreneur incurs in the process of starting a business and they include costs of sales, professional costs, administrative costs, transaction costs classified as either fixed or variable costs among others as indicated by Webber (n.d).

With the available cost on one side and the costs that may be incurred on one side, calculating the initial costs gives one a chance to consider the items which are of high necessity and giving them higher priorities compared to those lowly placed depending on the capital available. Accurate estimates reduce the gap between the real budget and the expected budget and thus placing the business in a comfortable position (Anon, 2009).

The working or operating capital is the amount of money needed to keep the business running. For a sustainable business one has to allocate enough working capital in order to ensure the business runs successfully. It is important to factor out the fixed and the variable costs so as to know the required capital.

Fixed Costs

Fixed costs are the fixed expenses the business has to incur irrespective of the sales made. The costs required when investing in the fixed assets such as the cost of machinery or the cost of land among others.

Machinery or plant costs: these are the costs required to buy the required machinery if the business demands one.

Land costs: these are costs of buying the piece of land or paying for the rent if you are leasing the land.

Stock costs: these are the costs required for buying the initial purchases which will be needed by the business.

Variable costs

These are the costs related to the delivery of one’s product or service. These costs usually relate to the activities going on within the business. They include;

Transaction costs: these are the costs which the business will incur during the negotiation process.

Administration costs: these are the costs which the business will have to incur when enquiring about any expertise information that may be required. Others include what the authority will charge you in order to issue you with a license allowing you to start the business.

Wages: the costs incurred when paying the workers or your own salary. Wages vary with the size of the business and the ongoing activities.

Costing and Pricing

When setting prices it is advisable for one to set prices which can cover the costs of production in addition to generating some profit. The business owner should take into consideration the costs which will be incurred during the start up and the running process so as to ensure the product set prices covers everything.

Other costs which should also be taken into consideration are the hidden costs (Garrison, Noreen & Brewer, 2006). Hidden costs are those costs which are incurred during the process of conducting the business such as the transportation cost or the transaction costs many people do not include them but to know the real business situation, it is always advisable to include them.

Measurements

The involved costs will be measured in terms of dollars by measuring the expected costs and benefits and then estimating how long it will take to reach break even point. The break even point is that time when the costs are equal to the benefits and the business is neither incurring profits nor losses. It indicates the costs have all been covered and it is a very helpful point in knowing how long the business will take before it can cover all the costs so as to allocate enough running capital to the business (Holland, 1998).

Cost Benefit Analysis

Evaluating quantitatively whether to start the business:

The last step in doing a feasibility test involves calculating the costs and the benefits involved in what is referred to as cost benefit analysis. The method involves simply adding up the value of benefits and then dividing with the costs involved in order to know how long it should take before the business breaks even (Nas, 1996).

A business man is deciding whether to start a business of importing French beans from Africa. The following are the costs he is likely to incur:

Pay back time: (8000/10500) = 0.7619048.

It will take approximately 9 months to reach the break even point.

From the above analysis we can summarize by indicating that the above business idea has got higher chances of succeeding. If the entrepreneur would like to reach break even point faster he should find ways of reducing transaction costs or search for more market opportunities in order to increase the revenue earned reducing the fraction further.

Conclusions and Recommendations

When starting a business, there are different types of cost that one must incur before the business can succeed. It is very important to calculate all the estimated costs that may be required in order to avoid surprises. Ensure you have enough capital to help you run the business until it has grown to fund for its own expenses. It is always advisable to talk with the people in the industry and enquire for as much information as important as it may be.

The support of the family is another vital factor that I can recommend for anyone starting the business so that incase of failure at least you may have somewhere to run to. Seven jurors picked in Trump’s N.Y. trial as judge presses ahead

A long day of questioning jurors means opening statements could come as early as monday.

NEW YORK — The judge overseeing former president Donald Trump’s criminal trial said opening statements could begin as soon as Monday, as the jury selection process sped up and Trump got an earful from the people who might soon decide his fate.

Lawyers for Trump on Tuesday repeatedly argued that old social media posts by many of the prospective jurors or their friends showed that they were not being forthcoming about their animosity toward him, while prosecutors argued that old dumb jokes on the internet were not a cause to dismiss someone from the panel.

Trump, the likely Republican nominee for president in the November election, spent hours listening as potential jurors offered their opinions of him — some blunt, some guarded and some just funny.

By the end of the day, seven people had been sworn in as jurors — more than a third of the total number of people that will be needed to hold a trial with a full jury and six alternates.

If New York Supreme Court Justice Juan Merchan can stick to that pace, the first criminal trial of a former U.S. president will be fully underway in less than a week — a potential turning point for Trump’s campaign to return to the White House.

Trump is charged with 34 counts of falsifying business records. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg says Trump orchestrated a scheme before the 2016 election to pay off an adult-film actress to keep her quiet about a sexual liaison with him years earlier, and then created a false paper trail to hide the true purpose and source of the payment.

The court will need to find 11 more panelists to sit in judgment of Trump, which will mean more chances for potential jurors to opine on the pugilistic politician. Merchan has ordered that the names of the prospective jurors remain confidential, although the prosecutors and defense lawyers are made aware of their names.

Trump “stirs the pot; he speaks his mind,” said one potential juror, a woman who works at a senior care facility. “You can’t judge him because he speaks his mind.”

Pressed by Trump lawyer Todd Blanche on what she thought of Trump’s outspoken nature, she laughed and said, “Come on, what can you say about that? If I told you all the time what I thought about people — I want to say some things to people, but my mama said be nice.”

Blanche questioned the prospective juror as the selection process began focusing more closely on each potential panelist’s views about him. Trump’s defense team is worried about trying to assemble a jury from heavily Democratic Manhattan, where he is unpopular.

Many potential jurors who made it through the initial screening insisted that they could be fair, and some of them openly resisted stating what their political views were, despite being pressed repeatedly by Blanche.

One prospective juror questioned Tuesday said he was originally from Mexico but took an oath to become a U.S. citizen in 2017 — the same year Trump was sworn into office. Asked how that might affect his view of the case, the man said it would not.

“Feelings are not facts,” he said. “I’m very grateful to be an American, and that happened on the first year that he was president.”

Another prospective juror, a woman with black glasses, became animated discussing how Trump, like any criminal defendant, has a right not to testify if he doesn’t want to.

“If he decides not to speak … that’s your right; you can’t presume that makes him guilty,” she said, waving her hand for emphasis. The prosecutor, she said, is “the one that has to present those facts and prove them, but as I said, he has the right not to say them.”

At the end of her comments, Blanche smiled and said, “I don’t think I could have said it better myself.”

Trump’s legal team seized on social media posts tied to some prospective jurors that the defense lawyers said showed that those people could not be impartial.

One prospective juror had posted, years earlier: “Good news!! Trump lost his court battle on his unlawful travel ban!!!” Merchan said that if the juror had stopped there, there would not be a problem, but the man’s post went on to say, “Get him out, and lock him up.”

Questioned about the post, the man said he no longer believed Trump should be “locked up,” at which point Trump craned his neck toward him and smirked. The judge dismissed the man from the jury pool.

Another woman in the jury pool was asked about a video she posted to social media after the 2020 election, which showed people in Upper Manhattan celebrating the results.

The juror said she happened to see the celebrations while parking her car and recorded them for posterity, and did not believe doing so would affect her judgment in the case.

“Regardless of my thoughts about anyone or anything or political feelings or convictions,” she said, “the job of a juror is to understand the facts of a trial and to be the judge of those facts.”

Blanche argued she should be dismissed for cause, calling her Facebook posts “extraordinarily hostile,” but the judge disagreed, saying she had provided what he believed was a reasonable explanation.

During the long day of questioning, Trump’s mood seemed to drift from uninterested to upset. At one point, Merchan warned Trump that he didn’t like his reaction to one potential juror.

The judge said he could tell Trump was gesturing and mumbling in reaction to the potential juror loud enough for others to hear.

“I will not have any jurors intimidated in the courtroom,” Merchan cautioned the defense.

Prosecutor Joshua Steinglass tried to reassure the jurors that no one was trying to keep people with political beliefs off the jury — just to find jurors who would not let those beliefs influence their view of the case.

“It seems that everyone and their mother has an opinion about this case, and what the right outcome may be, however uninformed that opinion may be,” Steinglass said. “This case has nothing to do with your personal politics.”

At another point, the prosecutor said it was fine to discuss what he called “the obvious: The defendant in this case is both the former president and a candidate for that office. No one is suggesting that you can’t be a fair juror because you’ve heard of Donald Trump. We don’t expect you to have been living under a rock.”

The defense challenged a potential juror from the Upper West Side over online posts made or shared by her husband in 2016, including one that had a theme of the Avengers, a group of comic-book heroes, uniting against Trump.

Steinglass argued that Trump’s lawyers were making too much of old social media posts. “People post things on social media … that seem to be funny at the time, and that’s not necessarily as weighty as people think it is,” he said.

The judge agreed. “If this is the worst thing that you’re able to find about this juror,” Merchan said, it gave him more confidence in her ability to be fair and impartial.

One potential juror questioned about her social media posts said that they were years old and that she had stopped posting about politics.

“It got too vitriolic for me,” she said. “I learned a good lesson.” She said that she had had trouble sleeping the night before while thinking about the significance of the case but insisted she knew she could be fair.

“This is, like, a big deal in the grander scheme of things,” she said.

One potential juror said she wasn’t particularly interested in politics but added: “Obviously, I know about President Trump. I’m a female.”

When Blanche asked what she meant by that, she answered: “I’m a female, he’s targeted some females, so I would say some of my friends have strong opinions on him.” The woman said she did not know much about the allegations.

Another potential juror, a woman who works in cybersecurity, answered a question about whether she has close friends in the legal profession by saying she “dated a lawyer for a while. It ended fine.” As some in the courtroom laughed, the woman added, “Sorry, lawyers.”

In a time when the headlines are dominated by wars and a divisive presidential campaign, the magazine-world rivalry between The Atlantic and The New Yorker doesn’t amount to much.

So you might have missed it when, on April 2, The Atlantic beat The New Yorker in three big categories at the 2024 National Magazine Awards .

But to Rusty Foster, who chronicles the media industry and internet culture in his daily newsletter, Today in Tabs, The Atlantic’s victory was big news.

Shortly after the awards ceremony, which took place at Terminal 5 in Manhattan, Mr. Foster tapped out a fanciful report for his audience of media obsessives. Under the headline “Shutout at the TK Corral,” he wrote that David Remnick, the editor of The New Yorker, “solemnly folded up and ate each of his prepared speeches as he watched The Atlantic win every category.”

Mr. Foster then turned his attention to Anna Wintour, the editorial director of Condé Nast, the publishing giant that owns The New Yorker, Vogue and other publications, writing that she “donned an emergency second pair of sunglasses” in reaction to the company’s poor showing.

A surprising thing about Today in Tabs — which has a knowing, satirical tone that has made it an enduring hit among media insiders — is that Mr. Foster writes it from the bucolic setting of Peaks Island, Maine, which is where he was when the National Magazines Awards ceremony took place.

He says he finds New York’s nonstop noise and crowds tiring, and his most recent visit to the city was last May, when he and the youngest of his three children stayed at a Times Square hotel and saw “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” on Broadway.

One of his friends, Paul Ford , a writer, editor and tech entrepreneur, noted that Mr. Foster, the person, seems to have little in common with the media chronicler of Today in Tabs. “He’s a very New England guy,” Mr. Ford said. “When you meet this guy, if he told you he’s going to make a wooden canoe, you’d go, ‘Alright.’”

A Peaks Islander

Mr. Foster, 47, started Today in Tabs in 2013, when the industry he covers with a mix of affection and scorn was going through a crisis brought on, in part, by the rise of digital technology.

The news media business is in even worse shape now. The Los Angeles Times recently announced that it would slash its newsroom by more than 20 percent, Sports Illustrated has been gutted, and more than 400 union staffers at Condé Nast walked off the job this year after the company announced it planned a layoff. Vice , a onetime colossus of digital media, has filed for bankruptcy; and Gawker and The Awl , a pair of online publications that had an influence on Today in Tabs, are gone.

Amid the economic gloom, Mr. Foster has what many media outlets crave: a devoted readership willing to pay for content.

Around 10 percent of his 36,000 subscribers are paying readers, he said, who fork over $6 per month or $50 per year. That’s not quite three-bedrooms-in-Cobble-Hill money, but it allows Mr. Foster to make a living in media at a time when many veteran journalists are struggling to find jobs.

From the start, he has written Today in Tabs from Peaks Island, a nearly one-square-mile patch of rocky land in Casco Bay. Reachable only by ferryboat, it has roughly 900 full-time residents. Aside from a few homey dining establishments (including Milly’s Seaside Skillet Kitchen and the Cockeyed Gull Restaurant) and a basic supermarket, there’s not much commerce to speak of.

The locals have an independent character. Many live in weather-beaten cottages and drive junker cars that don’t require a state inspection sticker if kept on-island. Since the 1880s, Peaks Islanders have mounted six unsuccessful campaigns to secede from Portland , which is three miles away and governs the island.

On a cool, breezy morning, Mr. Foster led me from the ferry to his 2001 Chevy Suburban, which he had converted to an “overlander” vehicle to take his family on road trips to Yellowstone National Park and other sites. The interior had built-in beds. The roof held two elongated water storage tanks.

He didn’t say much during the short drive. The pavement gave way to a dirt road, and he came to a stop in front of a modest two-story fixer-upper built in the early 1900s.

In the back yard, Mr. Foster’s island car, a Jeep Liberty, was up on jacks. Nearby was a chicken coop he had built for the flock of laying hens his family kept when the kids were little.

Inside, he sat at the kitchen table and unwrapped a croissant that I had brought along from Portland. As his Rhodesian Ridgeback, Sam, shuffled underfoot for crumbs, he spoke in quiet tones about growing up in Massachusetts and spending happy childhood summers on Peaks Island, where his grandparents had a cottage.

At the College of William & Mary, in Williamsburg, Va., he was all set to major in film studies, only to drop out during his senior year. While there, he met Christina Fischer, a history major. They married and moved to San Francisco in 2000. Mr. Foster worked as a programmer for an internet startup in the waning days of the dot-com bubble, but he didn’t care for the city or the tech scene, and the couple made the move to Peaks Island in 2001.

“A lot of things happened in a very short period of time — and then we moved here, and nothing happened,” Mr. Foster said with a laugh.

He recalled his first brush with the internet in the late 1980s, when his father, who worked as a franchise developer for Dunkin’ Donuts, signed up for CompuServe, one of the first online services. Mr. Foster learned to type on its chat function, CB Simulator. For a self-described shy, nerdy teenager, the ability to meet people online was revelatory.

“What I discovered was that writing is the easiest way for me to talk to people,” he said. “And it’s the way I feel the most that I’m expressing myself.”

Mr. Foster is something of a Zelig-like figure in internet history, popping up in key roles at various stages in the web’s development. He was an influencer long before that was even a thing. A group blog he created in 1999, Kuro5hin (motto: “Technology and Culture, from the Trenches”), was one of the first sites that allowed users to post comments and create their own blog pages.

Kuro5hin became a gathering place for early adopters and — along with Slashdot and Wikipedia — helped shape the open-source culture of the early internet. Mr. Foster, then known as “Rusty from Kuro5hin,” made plenty of friends online as he built a career as a freelance programmer.

He was an early shareholder in Sports Blog Nation, the precursor to Vox Media. In 2013, he was hired by Stephen Colbert and the comedy writer Rob Dubbin to help develop Scripto , a scriptwriting software used by “The Colbert Report” and “The Daily Show.” Now and then, those jobs took him to New York. But even in his coding days, Mr. Foster found that he got along better with journalists than tech people.

“There aren’t a lot of tech leaders that I find interesting,” he said in his kitchen. “I’m a language person. Media people come from words. I like their approach to the world. They have skeptical curiosity.”

He started Today in Tabs almost on a whim, thanks to the encouragement of Caitlin Kelly, who was then a senior web producer for The New Yorker. (The newsletter’s keyword, “tabs,” is internet shorthand for browser windows as well as slang for the latest articles and memes that people were getting worked up about online.) Mr. Foster laid out the Today in Tabs origin story in a 2021 edition of his newsletter.

“One day in 2013, underemployed and wasting time on Twitter, I tweeted ‘Today in Tabs,’” he wrote. In reply, Ms. Kelly tweeted, “wait is this a e-newsletter I can subscribe to?”

Mr. Foster continued: “‘A e-newsletter?’ I thought, in the amusing old-timey patois of 2013, ‘Why ever not?’ So that afternoon I sent the first Today in Tabs to 25 subscribers, beginning with this NY Post story about love and misogyny and sandwiches.”

Soon enough, he was tracking “the insidery squabbles and hate reads and high-minded-if-fleeting-feuds” in the media world, as The New York Observer put it in a 2014 profile. Today in Tabs quickly became a favorite of the web-savvy journalists who worked at Buzzfeed, Vox and other digital outlets.

Mr. Foster shut it down in 2016 because his job at Scripto demanded too much of his time. By 2021, he was back up and posting, first on Substack and then on the publishing platform Beehiiv. Restarting Today in Tabs, he said, was his attempt to leave programming behind and make a living as a writer.

Though he has written for The New Yorker, The Awl and other publications, Mr. Foster has never held a staff position as a journalist. And although he now makes his living tracking the media, he said he still thought of it as a hobby — “and it’s a weird hobby to have.”

Some people golf or sport-fish. Mr. Foster likes immersing himself in burn reviews of the new essay collection by Lauren Oyler and going down the rabbit holes of the Kate Middleton saga . In other words, putting together a newsletter about the media and online life comes naturally to him.

“It’s not a job so much as a thing my brain does,” he said. “If I read a certain amount of content every day, then my brain will produce 800 words about it. As long as I can sit and write that down, I’m good.”

Deadline Days

Unlike other industry newsletters, Today in Tabs, which is published four or five days a week, does not deliver scoops or exclusive interviews with boldface names. Billed as “your favorite newsletter’s favorite newsletter,” it is an 800-word snapshot of what people (mostly journalists) are talking about in the moment.

What readers are really paying for is Mr. Foster’s sensibility.

He writes in a cynical but still bright-eyed, quirkily punctuated, jokey style — internet voice — that will be recognizable to anyone who remembers Gawker, The Awl or, further back, Suck.com.

Matt Levine, an opinion columnist for Bloomberg, called Mr. Foster “a tremendous stylist,” adding that Today in Tabs was an inspiration for his own newsletter, Money Stuff . “I’m on the internet all day, on Twitter all day, and it’s this shared psychosis,” Mr. Levine said. “Rusty captures the nonsense of the day but in a stylistic way that makes it seem like literature.”

Elizabeth Lopatto , a senior writer for the Verge, says Mr. Foster’s appeal lies in his geographic and psychic remove from what he writes about. “As much as I love media reporters, there’s something to be said for that outside perspective,” Ms. Lopatto said.

“People read to have fun,” she added. “I get the sense that Rusty is writing that newsletter trying to make himself laugh.”

Though a creature of the internet, Mr. Foster is not unlike an old-school newspaper reporter in his adherence to a daily deadline.

Mr. Foster’s wife works as a data systems specialist for the Maine Coalition to End Domestic Violence, a nonprofit, working from home or in Augusta. His three children, Mica, 19, Calvin, 16, and Ash, 11, are all in school. That leaves him padding around the house for much of the day.

He gets up around 8 a.m. and moseys down to the kitchen to make coffee. He takes a mug upstairs and gets back in bed, where he sits with his laptop, catching up on what’s happening online. If something piques his interest, he bookmarks it in a file.

“That’s my notebook,” Mr. Foster said. “It’s really just a list of links. And hopefully I remember why I bookmarked it.”

He checks in with a Slack channel that includes reporter friends who give him a sense of what journalists are talking about. A group of Today in Tabs enthusiasts on the social media platform Discord drop off more links — in effect, they are Mr. Foster’s volunteer stringers.

He makes lunch and takes Sam for a walk down the dirt road. He aims to start writing by 1 p.m. and to post by 4 or 5. If he hasn’t gotten going in earnest by 3, panic sets in.

He writes at a small desk in his bedroom. On the wall is a plaque he had made that says: “Rusty Foster, Weird Media Gremlin.”

Tabs is structured like a late-night talk show, starting with a monologue that allows Mr. Foster to riff on a trending topic at length. One day in February, his opening subject was the financier Bill Ackman, whose public fight against his alma mater, Harvard, had made him the subject of several articles , a phenomenon Mr. Foster dubbed “ the Ackmanaissance .” Mr. Foster wrote that a Washington Post profile of Mr. Ackman made him seem like “an overconfident dimwit”; from there, he dove into a New York magazine piece on the man to come up with “the eight best New York Magazine roasts of Bill Ackman that he won’t understand.”

The Today in Tabs opener is followed by a middle section of rapid-fire links to articles and news items, many of them written in insidery lingo. Here, Mr. Foster might also reveal his pet causes and pet peeves (One hyperlink reads: “Molly White On Chris Dixon’s Dumb Crypto Book”). Each installment of the newsletter ends with a musical guest — or, rather, an embedded song video, usually by an indie band.

His fellow Peaks Islanders have little idea what he does for a living or that in certain circles he is known as “Rusty from Tabs.” He has not been profiled in The Portland Press Herald or The Peaks Island News. He tells people who ask that he’s a writer. When they ask him what he writes about, he struggles to explain what it is that a weird media gremlin does.

“I usually tell them, ‘I make jokes about the news,’” he said.

For someone who has been online 35 years, Mr. Foster retains a remarkable ability to disconnect from the machine. He’s an engaged parent, as well as an avid kayaker and hiker. He also belongs to a wilderness search-and-rescue team that does summer shifts in Baxter State Park, in northern Maine. On weekends, he mostly stays off the internet.

“I compartmentalize a lot,” he said. “I try to be doing the thing that I’m doing when I’m doing it.”

His readers will soon have to match his ability to manage an online obsession. Starting July 2, Mr. Foster is taking a break from Today in Tabs to hike the Appalachian Trail with his oldest child, who is set to graduate from college in May and move overseas in the fall.

In addition to a good pair of trail runners and a waterproof tent, Mr. Foster plans to pack a six-ounce folding keyboard and his smartphone for the 2,200-mile journey. As he has already informed his subscribers, he will start a new newsletter called Today on Trail. More than 2,000 people have signed up to pay Mr. Foster a to-be-determined fee for his “chronicle of what happens in my brain on a five-month hike.”

As he spoke further of his planned hiatus from Today in Tabs, he considered what it would be like to spend several months without a Wi-Fi signal, a prospect that might strike terror, and perhaps a bit of envy, into his readers.

“I was like, What if I got offline a little bit to see what’s in my own head?” Mr. Foster said. “It’s been about three and a half years of doing Tabs consistently. I wonder if there’s something else for me to discover that I could write, if I were not constantly living in that information-soaked environment.”

You might be assigned an argumentative essay as a writing exercise in high school or in a composition class. The prompt will often ask you to argue for one of two positions, and may include terms like “argue” or “argument.” It will frequently take the form of a question.

The prompt may also be more open-ended in terms of the possible arguments you could make.

Argumentative writing at college level

At university, the vast majority of essays or papers you write will involve some form of argumentation. For example, both rhetorical analysis and literary analysis essays involve making arguments about texts.

In this context, you won’t necessarily be told to write an argumentative essay—but making an evidence-based argument is an essential goal of most academic writing, and this should be your default approach unless you’re told otherwise.

Examples of argumentative essay prompts

At a university level, all the prompts below imply an argumentative essay as the appropriate response.

Your research should lead you to develop a specific position on the topic. The essay then argues for that position and aims to convince the reader by presenting your evidence, evaluation and analysis.

  • Don’t just list all the effects you can think of.
  • Do develop a focused argument about the overall effect and why it matters, backed up by evidence from sources.
  • Don’t just provide a selection of data on the measures’ effectiveness.
  • Do build up your own argument about which kinds of measures have been most or least effective, and why.
  • Don’t just analyze a random selection of doppelgänger characters.
  • Do form an argument about specific texts, comparing and contrasting how they express their thematic concerns through doppelgänger characters.

An argumentative essay should be objective in its approach; your arguments should rely on logic and evidence, not on exaggeration or appeals to emotion.

There are many possible approaches to argumentative essays, but there are two common models that can help you start outlining your arguments: The Toulmin model and the Rogerian model.

Toulmin arguments

The Toulmin model consists of four steps, which may be repeated as many times as necessary for the argument:

  • Make a claim
  • Provide the grounds (evidence) for the claim
  • Explain the warrant (how the grounds support the claim)
  • Discuss possible rebuttals to the claim, identifying the limits of the argument and showing that you have considered alternative perspectives

The Toulmin model is a common approach in academic essays. You don’t have to use these specific terms (grounds, warrants, rebuttals), but establishing a clear connection between your claims and the evidence supporting them is crucial in an argumentative essay.

Say you’re making an argument about the effectiveness of workplace anti-discrimination measures. You might:

  • Claim that unconscious bias training does not have the desired results, and resources would be better spent on other approaches
  • Cite data to support your claim
  • Explain how the data indicates that the method is ineffective
  • Anticipate objections to your claim based on other data, indicating whether these objections are valid, and if not, why not.

Rogerian arguments

The Rogerian model also consists of four steps you might repeat throughout your essay:

  • Discuss what the opposing position gets right and why people might hold this position
  • Highlight the problems with this position
  • Present your own position , showing how it addresses these problems
  • Suggest a possible compromise —what elements of your position would proponents of the opposing position benefit from adopting?

This model builds up a clear picture of both sides of an argument and seeks a compromise. It is particularly useful when people tend to disagree strongly on the issue discussed, allowing you to approach opposing arguments in good faith.

Say you want to argue that the internet has had a positive impact on education. You might:

  • Acknowledge that students rely too much on websites like Wikipedia
  • Argue that teachers view Wikipedia as more unreliable than it really is
  • Suggest that Wikipedia’s system of citations can actually teach students about referencing
  • Suggest critical engagement with Wikipedia as a possible assignment for teachers who are skeptical of its usefulness.

You don’t necessarily have to pick one of these models—you may even use elements of both in different parts of your essay—but it’s worth considering them if you struggle to structure your arguments.

Regardless of which approach you take, your essay should always be structured using an introduction , a body , and a conclusion .

Like other academic essays, an argumentative essay begins with an introduction . The introduction serves to capture the reader’s interest, provide background information, present your thesis statement , and (in longer essays) to summarize the structure of the body.

The spread of the internet has had a world-changing effect, not least on the world of education. The use of the internet in academic contexts is on the rise, and its role in learning is hotly debated. For many teachers who did not grow up with this technology, its effects seem alarming and potentially harmful. This concern, while understandable, is misguided. The negatives of internet use are outweighed by its critical benefits for students and educators—as a uniquely comprehensive and accessible information source; a means of exposure to and engagement with different perspectives; and a highly flexible learning environment.

The body of an argumentative essay is where you develop your arguments in detail. Here you’ll present evidence, analysis, and reasoning to convince the reader that your thesis statement is true.

In the standard five-paragraph format for short essays, the body takes up three of your five paragraphs. In longer essays, it will be more paragraphs, and might be divided into sections with headings.

Each paragraph covers its own topic, introduced with a topic sentence . Each of these topics must contribute to your overall argument; don’t include irrelevant information.

This example paragraph takes a Rogerian approach: It first acknowledges the merits of the opposing position and then highlights problems with that position.

A common frustration for teachers is students’ use of Wikipedia as a source in their writing. Its prevalence among students is not exaggerated; a survey found that the vast majority of the students surveyed used Wikipedia (Head & Eisenberg, 2010). An article in The Guardian stresses a common objection to its use: “a reliance on Wikipedia can discourage students from engaging with genuine academic writing” (Coomer, 2013). Teachers are clearly not mistaken in viewing Wikipedia usage as ubiquitous among their students; but the claim that it discourages engagement with academic sources requires further investigation. This point is treated as self-evident by many teachers, but Wikipedia itself explicitly encourages students to look into other sources. Its articles often provide references to academic publications and include warning notes where citations are missing; the site’s own guidelines for research make clear that it should be used as a starting point, emphasizing that users should always “read the references and check whether they really do support what the article says” (“Wikipedia:Researching with Wikipedia,” 2020). Indeed, for many students, Wikipedia is their first encounter with the concepts of citation and referencing. The use of Wikipedia therefore has a positive side that merits deeper consideration than it often receives.

India calls on Iran to release 17 Indian crew members on board seized container ship

India has called on Iran to release 17 Indian crew members on board a container ship seized by Iran on Saturday. 

Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar said that he spoke to his Iranian counterpart Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian and "took up the release of 17 Indian crew members of MSC Aries."

Four Filipino seamen were also on board the ship, according to the Philippine Department of Migrant Workers.

The department said it was working with its government, the ship owner, and the operator to release the captured seafarers.

On Saturday, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards seized an Israeli-linked container ship in a helicopter operation near the Strait of Hormuz, state news agency IRNA reported. 

Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) said there were 25 crew members on board.

Japanese prime minister condemns Iran's attack on Israel

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida on Sunday said he "strongly condemns" Iran's missile and drone attack on Israel.

"(The attack) further aggravates the current situation in the Middle East. We are deeply concerned and strongly condemn such an escalation," Kishida told reporters.

Kishida said Japan would continue diplomatic efforts to "prevent the situation from worsening and to calm the situation down," and "respond in cooperation with other countries."

Blinken calls British and German counterparts following Iran's attack on Israel

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken spoke with his counterparts from the United Kingdom and Germany on Sunday following Iran's attack on Israel, according to readouts from the State Department. 

All parties agreed "the importance of condemning Iran's attack in the strongest possible terms and preventing further escalation," the readout said. 

Blinken earlier held phone calls with his counterparts from Turkey, Egypt, Jordan and Saudi Arabia , in which he emphasized the importance of avoiding escalation in the Middle East and of "a coordinated diplomatic response."

US forces destroyed more than 80 attack drones from Iran and Yemen, Central Command says

US forces intercepted more than 80 one-way attack drones and at least six ballistic missiles from Iran and Yemen during its attack on Israel, according to a statement from the Central Command.

The operation included destroying a ballistic missile on its launcher vehicle and seven drones on the ground in Iranian-backed Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen, CENTCOM said. 

"Iran's continued unprecedented, malign, and reckless behavior endangers regional stability and the safety of U.S. and coalition forces," the statement added. 

Israeli and Iranian ambassadors trade accusations during UN Security Council session

Israel’s UN ambassador Gilad Erdan shows a video of drones and missiles heading toward Israel during a United Nations Security Council meeting at UN headquarters in New York on Sunday.

Israel and Iran’s United Nations ambassadors condemned each other’s actions during Sunday’s UN Security Council emergency session called to address Iran’s attack on Israel.

Israel’s UN ambassador Gilad Erdan said Iran "must be stopped before it drives the world to a point of no return, to a regional war that can escalate to a world war." Erdan accused Iran of seeking world domination and that its attack proved that Tehran "cares nothing, nothing for Islam or Muslims" before pulling out a tablet to show a video of Israel intercepting Iranian drones above Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa Mosque.

Erdan called on the UN Security Council to designate the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terror organization.

“Action must be taken now, not for Israel's sake, not for the region's sake, but for the world's sake. Stop Iran today."

Iran’s UN Ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani said his country’s operation was "entirely in the exercise of Iran’s inherent right to self-defense, as outlined in Article 51 of the Charter of the United Nations and recognized by international law."

Iravani said:

"This concluded action was necessary and proportionate," adding that the operation was “precise and only targeted military objectives” to reduce the potential of escalation and to prevent civilian harm. “Iran is never seeking to contribute to the spillover of the conflict in the region, nor does it to escalate or spread the tension to the entire region," he said.

Tehran’s attack had been anticipated since  a suspected Israeli strike  on an Iranian diplomatic complex in Syria earlier this month.

Iravani added Iran has “no intention of engaging in conflict with the US in the region” but warned Iran will use its “inherent right to respond proportionately” should the US initiate a military operation against “Iran, its citizens or its security.”

The hours-long Israeli war cabinet meeting ended Sunday night without a decision on how Israel will respond to Iran’s missile and drone attack , an Israeli official said.

The cabinet is determined to respond — but has yet to decide on the timing and scope and the official said the military has been tasked with coming up with additional options for a response.

Separately, a senior Biden administration official told reporters that an Israeli official told the United States that it's not looking to significantly escalate the showdown with Iran.

CNN analyst Barak Ravid said Israeli ministers Benny Gantz and Gadi Eisenkot advocated for swift action, but US President Joe Biden's phone call with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu led to a decision to delay the response until the next day.

  • Retaliation is over, Iran told US: Iran privately messaged the United States that its retaliation against Israel had concluded, echoing what Tehran said publicly, according to a senior administration official. Late Saturday, Iran said its attack on Israel is a response to Israel's strike on the Iranian consulate in Damascus, and "the matter can be deemed concluded." However, President Ebrahim Raisi said any “new aggression against the interests of the Iranian nation will be met with a heavier and regrettable response,” according to Iran’s state news channel IRIB. 
  • United Nations response: UN Secretary-General António Guterres  called for a de-escalation of violence after Iran’s attack. Guterres said the United Nations and member countries have a “shared responsibility” to engage “all parties concerned to prevent further escalation.” He also called for a ceasefire in the Israel-Gaza conflict. “Neither the region nor the world can afford more war,” he said.
  • G7 and others: Amid a flurry of diplomatic activity in response to Iran's attack, the G7 nations said they would work together to "stabilize the situation" in the Middle East, according to a statement from Biden. Also, Jordan summoned Iran's ambassador in Amman on Sunday after it intercepted Iranian drones over the country.
  • Meanwhile in Gaza: As thousands of Palestinians were turned away from returning to their homes in northern Gaza on Sunday, a 5-year-old girl was shot in the head by Israeli soldiers, her mother said. Video showed a man carrying a 5-year-old girl named Sally Abu Laila, who was bleeding from her head, with people crowding around her in panic trying to cover her wound.

Also on Sunday:

  • Israel decided to lift its restrictions on large gatherings and to reopen schools on Monday.
  • The US Department of Homeland Security has not identified any “specific or credible threats” to the US since Iran attacked Israel.

Iran will be held responsible if any action is taken against the US or Israel, deputy ambassador warns

US Deputy Ambassador to the UN Robert Wood speaks during a United Nations Security Council emergency session over Iran’s attack on Israel on Sunday in New York.

The United States warned Iran against taking any action against the US or Israel during the UN Security Council emergency session over Iran’s attack on Israel.

“Let me be clear, if Iran or its proxies take actions against the US or further action against Israel, Iran will be held responsible,” US Deputy Ambassador to the UN Robert Wood said Sunday.

The United States is “not seeking escalation, our actions have been purely defensive in nature,” adding that the “best way to prevent such escalation is an unambiguous condemnation of the council of Iran’s unprecedented large-scale attack,” he said.

The envoy reiterated US support for Israel and condemned Iran’s attack. “Iran’s intent was to cause significant damage and death in Israel,” Wood said.

Wood also said the UN Security Council had an “obligation to not let Iran’s actions go unanswered.”

“For far too long, Iran has flagrantly violated its international legal obligations,” he said before listing occasions Iran has violated UN Security Council resolutions and international law.

Wood accused Iran of being in a “broad sense complicit” of the October 7 attack on Israel by providing “significant funding and training for the military wing of Hamas.”

He added the US will explore "additional measures to hold Iran accountable here in the UN.”
