Start the presentation and see your notes in Presenter view

Using Presenter view is a great way to view your presentation with speaker notes on one computer (your laptop, for example), while only the slides themselves appear on the screen that your audience sees (like a larger screen you're projecting to).

If you're using a newer version of PowerPoint, just connect the monitors and PowerPoint automatically sets up Presenter View for you.

If Presenter view appears on the wrong screen, you can swap the display quickly .

Turn off Presenter view if you prefer not to use it.

Start presenting

On the Slide Show tab, in the Start Slide Show group, select From Beginning .

Use the controls in Presenter view

To move to the previous or next slide, select Previous or Next .

To view all the slides in your presentation, select See all slides .

Tip:  You’ll see thumbnails of all the slides in your presentation (as shown below), making it easy to jump to a specific slide in the show.

To view a detail in your slide up close, select Zoom into slide , and then point to the part you want to see.

To point to or write on your slides as you present, select Pen and laser pointer tools .

Press the Esc key when you want to turn off the pen, laser pointer, or highlighter.

To hide or unhide the current slide in your presentation, select Black or unblack slide show .

You can use PowerPoint on your smartphone as a remote control to run your presentation and view your speaker notes. See Using a laser pointer on your smartphone when presenting in PowerPoint for more information, including a brief video.

Swap the Presenter view and Slide view monitors

To manually determine which screen shows your notes in Presenter view and which shows only the slides themselves, on the task bar at the top of Presenter view, select Display Settings , and then select Swap Presenter View and Slide Show .

What the notes look like in Presenter view

Tip:  You can add notes either while you’re presenting, directly from Presenter view, or as you’re editing your presentation. For information on how to add speaker notes to your presentation see  Add speaker notes to your slides.

The notes appear in a pane on the right. If you need to add or delete something, simply click in the text box to edit it. The text wraps automatically, and a vertical scroll bar appears if necessary. You can change the size of the text in the Notes pane by using the two buttons at the lower left corner of the Notes pane:

To change the size of the panes in Presenter View, point your mouse at the vertical line that separates them, then click and drag.

Tip:  If you don't need to see the current slide in Presenter View at all, and would like your notes to be larger, drag that vertical separator line all the way to the left.

Turn off Presenter view

If you want Presenter view turned off while you are showing your presentation to others:

On the Slide Show tab of the ribbon, clear the check box named Use Presenter View .

Keep your slides updated

If you're working with a team of people to create your slide deck it may be that changes are being made to the slides right up to the last minute. Traditionally once you've started your presentation your slides wouldn't update. If you're using PowerPoint for Microsoft 365 you have the option to let your slides be updated by your team even as you're presenting so that you always have the up-to-the-minute changes.

You can turn this on by going to the Slide Show tab of the ribbon, selecting Set Up Slide Show , and checking the box for Keep slides updated .

If you've already started your presentation and you want to make sure that setting is on, you can do that from Presenter view. Select the More slide show options button (which looks like three dots) and on the menu make sure Keep Slides Updated is checked.

Using a laser pointer on your smartphone when presenting in PowerPoint

To start using Presenter view, select Slide Show > Presenter View .

To move to the previous or next slide, select the Previous or Next arrow.

To turn off the pen, laser pointer, or highlighter, press the Esc key.

To make the screen black or to un-black the screen, Press b on the keyboard.

Toggle subtitles on or off in Presenter view.

Extend your Mac desktop to the second monitor

On the Apple menu, select System Preferences .

Open the Displays app.

Click the Arrangement tab in the dialog box.

Clear the Mirror Displays check box.

By doing this process, you now have a two-monitor setup. You can present a PowerPoint slide show on one screen while having other applications open on the other screen, keeeping those other apps private to yourself.

To manually determine which screen shows your notes in Presenter view and which shows only the slides themselves, on the task bar at the top left of Presenter view, select Swap Displays .

When your computer is connected to a projector and you start Presenter View, it appears on your computer's screen, while only the slides appear on the projector screen.

You can edit the text in the Notes pane.

You can change the size of the text in the Notes pane by using the two buttons at the lower left corner of the Notes pane:

You can adjust the size of the current slide, and notes and next slide panels, by using your mouse to grab and drag the vertical line that separates the two panels.

On the PowerPoint menu, select Preferences .

In the PowerPoint Preferences dialog box, under Output and Sharing , click Slide Show .

Turn off Presenter view during a presentation

At the top of the Presentation view window, click Use Slide Show .

This button closes Presenter view. As a result, both your personal computer screen and the projector screen show the slide show.

After designing all the slides for your presentation, the next and last step is presenting in front of your audience. In this new Slidesgo School tutorial, you’ll see how the presenter view works and how you can record your presentation .

Presentation Modes

Presentation modes — set up slide show, presentation modes — record slide show.

  • There are different presentation modes in PowerPoint, besides the one you can find at the bottom of the screen.
  • To access the presentation modes, go to the Slide Show tab.
  • The first two options allow you to start the presentation from the beginning or from the currently selected slide.

Start Slide Show group

  • If you choose Present Online, an URL will be generated, which you can then share with your potential online viewers. After clicking this button, a new window will open, displaying info about the Microsoft Office online presentation service and a checkbox to enable remote download for your online audience. To enjoy this service, you need an Office 365 account. When you’re ready, click Connect to generate the URL.
  • If you choose Custom Slide Show, you can select which slides to display in your presentation.  First, create a new custom slide show and select the slides that you want to display. Then, click Add, enter the name of the presentation and click OK. This new custom presentation will appear on the list. Select it and click Show to begin the presentation.
  • In the Set Up group you’ll find options to set up the presentation, hide slides, rehearse your presentation and even record it.
  • Click Set Up Slide Show to adjust several settings regarding your presentation. You’ll find more information in the next section of this tutorial .
  • If you click Hide Slide, the selected slide won’t show up during your presentation. Hidden slides will appear faded out on the list and their numbers will be crossed out.
  • If you click Record Slide Show, you’ll be able to record your presentation from the beginning or from the current slide. We’ll go into detail in the last section of this tutorial.
  • There are several checkboxes regarding whether to play narrations, use timings and show media controls.

  • In the Monitors group you can choose which screen to display your presentation.
  • The last group, Captions & Subtitles, is only available in Office 365. You’ll find options to enable subtitles, which will be generated out of your speech (so you’ll need to have a mic). There are settings to change the language and the position of the subtitles.
  • Open your presentation in PowerPoint.
  • Go to the Slide Show tab.
  • In the Set Up group, click Set Up Slide Show. A new window will open, where you’ll find several options.
  • In the top-left corner, under “Show type”, you can choose whether the presentation will be in fullscreen with speaker notes, windowed, or in fullscreen without speaker notes or the menu bar.

  • Under “Show options” you can choose whether to show the presentation without narration or animations, or disable the hardware graphics acceleration (for better performance). You can also set the pen and laser pointer color.

  • Under “Show slides”, you can choose which slides to show in your presentation. You can select all of them, a specific range or a custom slideshow.
  • There are other settings to determine how to advance slides (manually or using timings), what the resolution will be and whether to use the presenter view.
  • Click Record Slide Show. From the drop-down menu, select From the Current Slide or From the Beginning.
  • A new window will open, along with the presentation in fullscreen mode. At the top-left you’ll find a button to start recording.

Not all presenters have excellent memory recall or the ability to speak flawlessly to the audience without any cues. However, many of them are good at hiding it by using Presenter View in PowerPoint. It is a presentation mode that enables the presenter to hide speaker notes and presentation controls from the audience while leveraging the various handy features offered by PowerPoint.

How to Use Presenter View in PowerPoint

To start using Presenter View, ensure it’s enabled before you begin your slideshow. If you are new to this feature, we recommend using this option to familiarize yourself with the various navigation options for this presentation mode. This might also be helpful if the PowerPoint templates you are accustomed to using might have animations that you might want to preview in this mode to understand when to give the next visual cue.

How to Enable Presenter View in PowerPoint

To enable PowerPoint presenter view, go to the SlideShow tab and make sure the Use Presenter View option is enabled. This will ensure that you can access Presenter View when you switch your slides to SlideShow mode.

Adjust Display Settings

You can swap between the presenter view and slideshow mode or duplicate the slideshow to exit the Presenter View from the Display Settings menu from the top toolbar.

Navigate Slides in Presenter View

Like any standard PowerPoint presentation in SlideShow mode, you can navigate between slides by using the arrow keys or with a presentation remote. Presenter View also provides slide navigation buttons to move the slides back and forth.

The Show Taskbar option at the top enables viewing the taskbar. This can be helpful if you require using the taskbar, such as to view your battery charge, see the time, enable or disable another app from the taskbar menu, etc.

Reset or Pause the Timer

Once you start your presentation in Presenter View, a timer starts showing how much time you have spent in slideshow mode. This is an excellent way to understand how much time you have consumed for your session and to keep an eye out for good timekeeping. You can also hit Pause or reset the timer anytime.

Change the Size of the Speaker Notes

How to view notes in PowerPoint while presenting? If you have any speaker notes added to your slides, they will appear in Presenter View on your screen. You can increase or reduce the size of the text via the two options at the bottom of the speaker notes pane.

Using Annotation Tools in Presenter View

PowerPoint annotation tools can be accessed from the bottom toolbar in Presenter View. The Pen and Laser Pointer Tools button gives you access to the pen, ink colors, laser pointer, and eraser and also allows you to show or hide the mouse pointer via Arrow Options .

If you need to go back and forth to find a relevant slide for an ongoing discussion or query during your presentation, you can view all slides in Presenter View via the See all slides option.

Zoom Slides using Presenter View

PowerPoint’s Zoom feature lets presenters quickly pick a portion of the slide to zoom into. Presenter View allows you to leverage this feature by instantly selecting a portion of the slide to enlarge it after selecting Zoom into the slide option. To exit the Zoom mode or hit the Esc key.

Black or Unblack SlideShow

Sometimes, you might want to turn the screen blank for a while, such as during a mid-presentation break. The Black or Unblack SlideShow option blanks the slides for your audience while continuing to show you all navigation options via Presenter View.

Toggle Subtitles in Presenter View

One of the most revolutionary features introduced by Microsoft for PowerPoint over the past decade has been Live captions. This feature enables subtitles by converting speech to text as you present. More Slideshow Options

Other than the various visibility prominent menus available to navigate, annotate, and present your slides, you can also find a few additional options via More slideshow options , which are accessible via the three dots at the bottom toolbar. These include adjusting the position of the subtitles, turning your screen white or black, ending the slideshow, etc.

How to Use Presenter View on a Single Screen

While Presenter View can be enabled to work with dual monitors, you can also use Presenter View on a single monitor with remote meeting apps like Zoom. A simple method for switching to Presenter View on a single monitor is to click the three dots ( More slideshow options ) at the bottom in SlideShow mode and select Show Presenter View .

Hey, Officer Insiders! My name is Victoria Tran, and I’m a Program Manager on the PowerPoint team. I’m thrilled to share that you can now edit notes in Presenter view in PowerPoint for Windows. No more switching to Editor view to type or change your notes, even during a presentation!

Accessing and editing your slide content whenever the need arises is a key part of the PowerPoint workflow. Whether you’re making an important edit to your speaker notes during a presentation rehearsal or jotting down feedback during your presentation, the ability to edit notes in Presenter view increases your productivity and eliminates the need to toggle between views.

We are excited to add this highly requested feature and expand the use of PowerPoint notes. In the future, we’ll continue to add support for editing notes in other views, such as Teleprompter view.

How it works

Ready to edit notes in Presenter view?

NOTE:  You can also press the F6 key to select the Notes pane in Presenter view. When a white outline appears around the pane, press Enter and start typing to make any updates you want.

Known issues

Presenter view currently only allows basic formatting of notes, such as bold, italics, and underlining (via keyboard shortcuts). Formatting such as text color, highlighting, and other options aren’t yet available.

Tips and tricks

  • If you are using keyboard commands to navigate through your slides during a presentation, make sure the text insertion point is not showing in the Notes pane. If it is, the arrow keys will move the insertion point around in the pane instead of navigating the slides.
  • If you have two monitors, a full-screen slide will show on one monitor and Presenter view on the other monitor, featuring a view of the next slide, your speaker notes, a timer, and more. If you have just one monitor, you can press Alt + F5 to try out Presenter view.

We will be rolling the edit notes in Presenter view feature out to Office Insiders running Beta Channel Version 2204 (Build 15225.20000) or later.

Calling is available in the new Meet app. Get started with calling in Google Meet to stay connected with friends and family .

  • When using Google Workspace, you can  hold large remote events .
  • Workspace organizations with admin capabilities can switch this feature on or off for the entire organization.
  • On your computer, when you click Present before you join a meeting, you join in Companion mode. When you use this option, your mic and speaker are unavailable.

Join a Meet video meeting . At the bottom, click Present now . Select Your entire screen, A window , or A tab . If you present a Chrome tab, it shares that tab's audio by default. To present a different tab, select the tab you want to present, click Share this tab instead . If you present a Slides presentation through a tab, you can control it in Meet . Click Share. Optional: To unpin your presentation and view it as a tile, click Unpin .   • If your camera is turned on, your video is active while you're presenting.
  • For better presentations and to prevent mirroring, share a new window or a specific tab instead of the meeting window.
  • To share your audio, you must select Share a Chrome tab or Share this tab.

If you’re using Google Meet on an eligible work or school account, you can control Google Slides presentations from within a Google Meet video meeting. You can also make other people in the video meeting co-presenters.

Important : To control a Google Slides presentation from a Google Meet video meeting, you must use a computer with a Chrome browser.

  • In a Chrome tab or window, open the Slides file you want to present.
  • In a different Chrome window, open Google Meet and join a video meeting.

  • You can either present from the Google Meet tab, or present directly from the Slides tab .
  • Select the tab with the Slides presentation, then click Share .
  • Important: You can only control a presentation in Google Meet when you're in slideshow mode.
  • Click to the next or previous slide with the arrow buttons.
  • Jump to a specific slide by clicking the slide number, and choosing from the list of slides.

As you present, you can share access to the file when someone needs it. You can only share Docs, Sheets, or Slides files.

Important: To see share suggestions, you must use the Chrome or Edge browser and not be in Incognito mode.

  • A sharing suggestion only appears if you select “Present a tab” as the sharing mode.
  • You can grant access to the file and attach the file to the meeting’s Calendar event.
  • You shared the file.
  • The link is shared in the meeting’s chat.

  • If all participants have access to the file, the link is shared in the Meet chat and attached to the Calendar event.
  • If a participant doesn’t have access to the file, you’re notified with a pop-up. Click Share in Meet chat .
  • The file is shared in the Meet chat and attached to the Calendar event.

Tip: To not attach a file to an event, in the pop-up, uncheck “Attach the file to the Calendar event.”

5 Options for How to Present a PowerPoint Slide Show in a Microsoft Teams meeting

If you are using Microsoft Teams to meet with others who are working remotely, you may not realize that you have seven choices when it comes to how you will present your PowerPoint slides to the group (I added two options I discovered after the article was first published). In this article I will share more details on these seven options and you will get a link to that option in my video that shows you what your audience will see. In this article I am using the Teams app in Windows 10. The seven options are:

  • Share your entire screen/desktop
  • Share the Slide Show window
  • Share the editing window with a clean look
  • Run the Slide Show in a window and share that window
  • Use the PowerPoint sharing option in Teams
  • Use Presenter View to show the audience your slides while you see Presenter View
  • Present with your video beside your PowerPoint slides

Option 1: Share your entire screen/desktop

This is the default method that most people choose because it is the closest to what we would do if we were in a meeting room with the participants sitting around the table. In Teams, you choose the sharing option called Desktop. The audience sees everything that is on your desktop, so if PowerPoint is not full screen, they will see any wallpaper you have and any other open applications with potentially confidential information displayed. They will also see the small Teams window in the lower right corner of your screen unless you minimize it.

You start your slide show in PowerPoint and all features will work, including animations and transitions. You can use a presentation remote to advance through your slides or use the arrow keys. Because the slides take up the whole screen, you can’t see the Teams controls so you may miss any chat or questions from the audience. If you use Alt+Tab to switch to the Teams window to see the chat discussion, the audience sees this as well because they see everything on your screen.

Option 2: Share the Slide Show window

Because Teams allows you to share any window that is open on your computer, another option you have is to share the window that has the Slide Show in it. Before you start sharing in Teams, start the Slide Show in PowerPoint. This will display the slides on the entire screen. Use Alt+Tab to go back to the Teams window. In the Teams sharing options, choose the window that is displaying the slide show (make sure you select the slide show window, not the PowerPoint regular window).

Again, since you are using full PowerPoint, all features work and this is similar to presenting before an audience in a meeting room. Because you are only sharing a window, the audience won’t see anything else on your screen. Because the slides take up the whole screen, you won’t see the Teams window with any chat or discussion. But you can switch to the Teams window using Alt+Tab to check the chat conversation without the audience seeing what you are doing.

Option 3: Share the editing window with a clean look

The first two options don’t allow you to see any other documents or notes that you may have on your screen because the slides cover the entire screen. If you don’t need any animation or transition features and are comfortable with the audience seeing the edit view of PowerPoint, you can choose to use a view that minimizes the PowerPoint interface so the slide is the focus.

In the normal editing view, minimize the slide thumbnails by dragging the vertical divider all the way to the left until it just shows the text indicating that thumbnails are available. Drag the horizontal divider at the bottom of the slide down to hide any notes that are below the slides. Third, collapse the ribbon by clicking on the collapse indicator (an upward arrow head) in the lower right corner of any ribbon. Finally, maximize the size of the slide in the editing window if it did not automatically resize itself. Now your slide is large in the editing window and PowerPoint has a cleaner look than the normal editing view.

In the Teams sharing options, choose the window for this PowerPoint presentation. When you move through the slides, you are not using Slide Show mode so there are none of the animation or transition features available. Any embedded media will not run automatically and must be manually played. You can move through the slides using the down and up arrow keys or the PageDown and PageUp keys.

This is not as clean as Slide Show mode, but it allows you to see other open documents on your screen without the audience seeing them. To see the full Teams window you can click on the small Teams window in the lower right of your screen and the audience will not see this either. This allows you to keep up with any chat discussion while presenting.

Option 4: Run the Slide Show in a window and share that window

Many presenters are not aware that PowerPoint has the option to run a slide show within the window it is in without taking up the entire screen. PowerPoint refers to this as the “Browsed by an individual” mode or Reading View. To use this mode, on the Slide Show ribbon, click on the Set Up Slide Show button. In the dialog box, in the Show type section in the to left corner, change the option by clicking on the radio button for “Browsed by an individual”. Click the OK button to save the change and exit the dialog box. Now whenever you enter Slide Show mode, the slides are run just in this PowerPoint window, not the full screen. You can change this back to the default of “Presented by a speaker” after the meeting is done.

In the Teams sharing options, choose the window for this PowerPoint presentation. Start the Slide Show mode in PowerPoint. You will see the slide show with some additional controls at the top and bottom of the window and possibly black bars on the top/bottom or left/right depending on the size of the window relative to the size of the slides. This is a slightly different look for the audience if they are used to the full screen version of Slide Show mode.

Because this is Slide Show mode, all animations and transitions work as expected. What is different than the full screen Slide Show mode is that the laser pointer, inking, and some other features are not available. Since you are only sharing this window, the audience does not see any other documents you may have open on the screen. To see the full Teams window you can click on the small Teams window in the lower right of your screen and the audience will not see this either. This allows you to keep up with any chat discussion while presenting.

Since this option is only sharing one window, it uses less bandwidth than sharing a full screen which may help users on lower speed connections have a better experience with less lags or distortion. This option may give you the best combination of PowerPoint features and presenter controls and options.

Option 5: Use the PowerPoint sharing option in Teams

Because Microsoft created Teams and PowerPoint, they have built in a presentation method that is unique amongst other meeting platforms. The PowerPoint sharing option allows you to load a PowerPoint file from your SharePoint library or from your computer. It then runs the slide show using PowerPoint on the Web inside Teams. This option offers some advantages according to Microsoft, including the use of far less bandwidth compared to screen sharing ( this video shows the dramatic drop in network usage with this method), not requiring PowerPoint to be installed on the computer, use of the PowerPoint on the Web accessibility features, availability of co-presenting features, and less battery usage compared to sharing the screen.

While all of these advantages are great, the biggest disadvantage is that the method uses PowerPoint on the Web, which does not support all features of PowerPoint yet. As you will see in the video, depending on what transitions or animations you use, they may not work properly or they may allow the audience to see parts of the slide before you build them on the slide. Microsoft is working on improving PowerPoint on the Web so it is a better experience but at this time I would advise you to test every slide in advance in a setup so you can see what the audience sees so you make sure the slides appear the way you want them to.

Because this method is integrated into Teams, the slide show happens in the Teams window and you see the Teams control bar on top of the slide show when you are presenting. You have access to all the Teams options in the window. Since the slide show is just in the Teams window, you also have the rest of your screen available for other documents you want to refer to.

Option 6: Use Presenter View to show the audience your slides while you see Presenter View

If you prefer to use Presenter View to see your speaking notes while the audience only sees your slides, I have instructions for using Presenter View in Teams with 1 or 2 screens and in Windows or on a Mac in my Complete Guide to using PowerPoint Presenter View in Teams .

Option 7: Present with your video beside your PowerPoint slides

You can present in a Microsoft Teams or Zoom meeting with your video beside your PowerPoint slides so your facial expressions can be easily seen along with the slides. The idea is to arrange our video and slides on our desktop and share the entire screen, so we control the size of both the video and the slides. This does not require you to install any software and uses the built-in features of the operating system and PowerPoint. For Windows 10 I explain the detailed steps in this article and show you how this is done in this video . For a Mac I explain the detailed steps in this article .

In my opinion, Option 6, using Presenter View, is perhaps the best option because it In my opinion, Option 5, using Presenter View, is the best option for most presenters because it allows you to see your notes and access all the expert features of Presenter View while the attendees see your full slides. It is what I use when I deliver my customized training courses .

How can I share a PowerPoint so that it opens automatically in presentation mode?

Thank you for querying in this forum.

According to your description, it seems that you want to share a presentation with students via Microsoft Teams and you also want your students to immediately watch your presentation as a slide show instead of seeing the slides in edit mode.

May I know if my understanding is right? If so, we’d suggest you save presentation file as .ppsx type file, if you are using PowerPoint in Windows, we’d suggest you go to PowerPoint File > Save as > Click More Options > select PowerPoint Show under Save as type, the file is saved as a .ppsx file. When the file is double-clicked, it opens as a slide show.

Then you can go to Microsoft Teams and find the team > click Files tab > upload this file. And we have tested it on our side, if we saved it as .ppsx file and uploaded to Teams, when we clicked it, it will show as a slide show, as shown below:

A strong presentation is so much more than information pasted onto a series of slides with fancy backgrounds. Whether you’re pitching an idea, reporting market research, or sharing something else, a great presentation can give you a competitive advantage, and be a powerful tool when aiming to persuade, educate, or inspire others. Here are some unique elements that make a presentation stand out.

  • Fonts: Sans Serif fonts such as Helvetica or Arial are preferred for their clean lines, which make them easy to digest at various sizes and distances. Limit the number of font styles to two: one for headings and another for body text, to avoid visual confusion or distractions.
  • Colors: Colors can evoke emotions and highlight critical points, but their overuse can lead to a cluttered and confusing presentation. A limited palette of two to three main colors, complemented by a simple background, can help you draw attention to key elements without overwhelming the audience.
  • Pictures: Pictures can communicate complex ideas quickly and memorably but choosing the right images is key. Images or pictures should be big (perhaps 20-25% of the page), bold, and have a clear purpose that complements the slide’s text.
  • Layout: Don’t overcrowd your slides with too much information. When in doubt, adhere to the principle of simplicity, and aim for a clean and uncluttered layout with plenty of white space around text and images. Think phrases and bullets, not sentences.

As an intern or early career professional, chances are that you’ll be tasked with making or giving a presentation in the near future. AT&T Inc. ( T , Financial ) is striving for a recovery following a period of underperformance, a situation brought on by challenges and missteps in executing its core business strategy.

Since the pandemic started, the stock has been stuck in a downtrend, shedding nearly 50% in market value before it bottomed in 2023.

Investors shunned the stock, and short sellers continued to push it lower as the wireless company struggled to integrate some of its most expensive media acquisitions, including the $85 billion Time Warner Time Warner and DirecTV businesses.

While the company did receive a reprieve as it abandoned its media ambitions, struggles in the core wireless business amid stiff competition left the stock susceptible to soaring selling pressure.

Wireless win: Surging ahead with subscriber growth and 5G expansion

The upward momentum has been supported by growing optimism that AT&T's wireless business is doing much better than initially feared. The bounceback in its market comes from significant gains in the company's wireless business.

The company has been posting gains in subscribers signed up for its wireless plans. Specifically, AT&T recorded 526,000 postpaid net subscriber ads in the fourth quarter and 1.70 million for the entire year, much better than the 499,000 phone contract subscribers at Verizon ( VZ , Financial ) for the same period.

Subscriber growth was primarily driven by attractive promotions and phone upgrades, affirming AT&T's ability to attract and retain customers. Thus, the growth in postpaid phone net subscribers underlies the company's commitment to offering cutting-edge technology and connectivity.

Highlights from AT&T's 2023 earnings presentation

In addition, the company recorded 273,000 AT&T fiber net ads in the fourth quarter and 1.1 million net ads for the year, marking a sixth consecutive year of 1 million or more fiber net ads. AT&T has succeeded in fending off the competition and attracting more subscribers by enhancing its wireless network in North America.

Expanding its 5G network and mid-band 5G spectrum, which covers over 250 million people , has also helped strengthen its competitive edge in the sector. The fiber network buildup is also progressing as planned, reaching 26 million by the end of last year. Hence, the telecommunications giant remains on track to reach 30 million by 2025, strengthening its revenue base further.

Consequently, AT&T ended 2023 with 71.30 million net postpaid phone subscribers in its 5G and fiber network, an improvement from 69.60 million as of the end of 2022. Similarly, fiber subscribers also increased to 8.30 million from 7.20 million.

Finally, it turned out to be one of the best years for the company as it recorded one of the lowest churn levels that helped support a string of average revenue per user growth. The postpaid churn level fell by 1.010%, consistent with the year-ago quarter. Therefore, the revenue the company generates from postpaid phones only increased by 1.40% to $56.23 per user due to higher-priced unlimited plans and decisive pricing actions.

Quarterly earnings soar with substantial subscriber gains and revenue surge

Based on the solid subscriber gains, AT&T delivered better-than-expected fourth-quarter results that indicate it is firing on all cylinders in its wireless business. The telecommunication giant delivered impressive results, characterized by solid revenue growth and remarkable subscriber gain numbers.

For the quarter, revenue increased 2.20% year over year to $32 billion, well above consensus estimates of $31.50 billion and above $31.3 billion delivered the same quarter a year ago. The increase was driven mainly by strong growth in mobility revenues, up 4.10% to $22.4 billion, as wireless services revenue increased by 3.90% to $16 billion.

Revenue for the full year grew 1.40% to $122.40 billion, driven by higher sales from mobility, which was above guidance. Additionally, the company's consumer broadband revenue increased 8.10%, which was above the guidance driven by solid growth in AT&T fiber revenue growth of 26.60%.

Amid the robust revenue growth, AT&T achieved what it set out to accomplish: delivering sustainable growth and consistent business performance. Operating expenses shrank by nearly half to $26.80 billion versus $52.40 billion delivered a year ago. The decrease can be attributed to, among other things, continued transformation efforts, including lower personnel costs. As a result, the telecom giant achieved $6 billion in run-rate cost savings and will reach $2 billion in cost savings by mid-2026.

In the end, AT&T delivered income from continuing operations of $2.60 billion versus a loss of $23.10 billion delivered a year ago. Earnings per share stood at 30 cents versus $3.20 delivered a year ago. Consequently, the company achieved $16.8 billion in free cash flow for the year, exceeding the previous guidance and up $2.6 billion from the prior year.

Looking forward, the 2024 outlook further indicates AT&T is in a robust growth phase after years of underperformance. The company expects wireless service revenue to increase by 3% , while broadband revenue is projected to grow by 7%. It is also planning a capital investment of between $21 billion and $22 billion to bolster the growth metrics, which should lead to free cash flow of between $17 billion and $18 billion with adjusted earnings of between $2.15 and $2.25 per share.

Innovations and investments drive 5G and fiber Growth

AT&T's solid fourth-quarter and full-year financial results come from it actively expanding its business with innovations and investments.

The telecommunications giant continuously expands its wireless and 5G networks, consequently helping fuel substantial subscriber growth. Investments in 5G and fiber connectivity have led to solid and profitable customer relationships while increasing efficiency and robust business performance.

The company also increases its fiber network capabilities and supports initiatives in the broadband and technology sectors. The enhanced financial outlook underlines a sustainable long-term growth and value creation strategy.

According to the tech expert and security analyst Kelly Indah , the company has strengthened its market position in telecommunications through strategic network expansions and innovative offerings like AT&T Internet Air, leading to a 3.3% increase in postpaid subscribers and significant growth in reseller and connected devices segments.

Therefore, these efforts, along with a robust addition of fiber and 5G subscribers, have not only catered to the high demand for advanced services, but also solidified its competitive edge.

From market lows to soaring highs

AT&T plunged from highs of $29 a share as the pandemic started in 2020 to record lows of about $13 a share in 2022. While the stock did bounce back in early 2023, recouping a significant chunk of the losses, it plunged further as the Federal Reserve embarked on aggressive monetary policy tightening to tame runaway inflation, consequently affecting consumer purchasing power on its wireless plans.

The company's valuation has improved significantly as solid wireless subscriber gains and growth in the fiber internet business continue to boost free cash flow. Since the stock bottomed out in July last year, it has rallied by about 21% and there is still room for growth to the upside as the shares are trading below the $20 level.

If the stock were to rally to about $21 a share, considering the updated guidance of free cash flow between $17 billion and $18 billion, the stock would have a price-to-free cash flow ratio of 8.60. That is still on the low end of its historical level of 14, affirming the stock is trading at discounted levels.

Additionally, the company's $1.11 per share annual payout on dividends and a dividend yield of 6.80% further strengthen its sentiments regarding generating passive income. Hence, AT&T is a solid dividend-paying play, given that its payout is 5 times more than that of the S&P 500 average.
