Voice Change Rule helps us to change both active and passive voice. In this post I have discussed all the rules so that the students and learners can learn voice change easily. They will not have to search the rules one by one in search engine. Besides these I have given examples of every rule. 

W hat is Voice Change?

When we change the active voice into passive voice or passive voice into active voice without changing the meaning is called voice change.

Kind of Voice

There are three kinds of voice in English grammar.

• Active Voice
• Passive Voice
• Quasi-passive Voice

Active voice: A verb in the active voice when its form shows that the person or thing denoted by the subject does something; or, in other words, is the doer of the action.

I have got a new job.

Passive voice: A verb is in the passive voice when its form shows that something is done to the person or thing denoted by the subject.

A new job has been got by me.

Quasi-passive voice: A sentence that does not mention a doer, the action term itself acts like a doer, is called an official word.

The cow is milking.

Voice Change

Active: I take a cup of tea daily.

Passive: A cup of tea is taken by me daily.

Shortcut Method of Voice Change [Affirmative]

Example of affirmative sentences:.

Active: I eat two mangoes.

Passive: Two mangoes are eaten by me.

Active: Rahul takes a cup of tea daily.

Passive: A cup of tea is taken daily by Rahul.

Active: I am writing a letter.

Passive: A letter is being written by me.

Active: You have bought a camera.

Passive: A camera has been bought by you.

Active: The cat killed a rat.

Passive: A rat was killed by the cat.

Active: They were cooking meat.

Passive: Meat was being cooked by them.

Active: She had washed the cloths.

Passive: The cloths had been washed by her.

Active:  We shall sell the old house.

Passive: The old house will be sold by us.

Active: Mina will have seen the Tajmahal.

Passive: The Tajmahal will have been seen by Mina.

 Active: You can sing a song.

Passive: A song can be sung by you.

Active: We should plant trees.

Passive: Trees should be planted by us.

Change of Subject And Object Voice Change Rule

Shortcut method of voice change [negative].

Active: I do not like coffee.

Passive: Coffee is not liked by me.

Active: He does not play cricket.

Passive: Cricket is not played by him.

Active: We are not learning English now.

Passive: English is not learning by us now.

Active: You have not taught me Sanskrit.

Passive: I have not been taught Sanskrit by you.

Active: Gopal did not eat rice yesterday.

Passive: Rice was not eaten by Gopal yesterday.

Active: They were not driving the cars.

Passive: The cars were not being driven by them.

Active: My brother had not broken the cup.

Passive: The cup had not been broken by my brother.

Active: Tony will not read the book.

Passive: The book will not be read by Tony.

Active: You should not call me.

Passive: I should not be called by you.

Voice Change of Interrogative Sentences

An interrogative sentence is of two kinds 1. With wh-words interrogative sentence  2. Without wh-words interrogative sentence

01. Without wh-words Interrogative Sentences

These types of interrogative sentences always give the answer “Yes/No”.

Active: Do you like coffee?

Passive: Is coffee liked by you?

Active: Does he play football?

Passive: Is football played by him?

Active: Can you cross the road?

Passive: Can the road be crossed by you?

02. With wh-words Interrogative Sentences

We can not give the answer to these types of interrogative sentences with “Yes/No”. The answer to those kinds of questions is narrative.

Active: What do you say?

Passive: What are said by you?

Active: Which book will you buy?

Passive: Which book will be bought by you?

Active: Whose cycle are you using now?

Passive: Whose cycle is being used by you now?

Active: When did you sell the house?

Passive: When was the house sold by you?

Active: Where have they lost the key?

Passive: Where has the key been lost by them?

Active: Why did you insult the girl?

Passive: Why was the girl insulted by you?

Active: How did he solve it?

Passive: How was it solved by him?

Active: How much water will Ramen take?

Passive: How much water will be taken by ramen?

Who and Whom

If we notice the sentence begins with “Who” in the active voice, the term “Who” will turn into “By whom” in the passive voice.

Again if we find the sentence starts with “Whom” in active voice, the word “Whom” will turn into “Who”.

Active: Who broke the glass?

Passive: By whom was the glass broken?

Active: Whom have the police arrested?

Passive: Who have been arrested by the police?

Imperative sentences are of three types like order, request and advice.

Transitive verb: This type of verb has an object.

Intransitive verb: This type of verb has no object.

01/2. Order/Advise

If the verb is transitive, this rule is suitable.

Aff: Let + Object + be + V- 3 .

Neg: Let + not + Object + be + V- 3 .

Active: Change the voice.

Passive: Let the voice be changed.

Active: Don’t open the door.

Passive: Let not the door be opened.

If the verb is intransitive, the rule is applicable.

For Affirmative Sentences

Active: Come in.

Passive: You are told to come in.

Active: Go to bed.

Passive: You are ordered to go to bed.

Active:  Follow me.

Passive: You are ordered to follow me.

For Negative Sentences

Active: Don’t talk.

Passive: You are told not to talk.

Active: Don’t play here.

Passive: You are ordered not to play here.

Active: Don’t misbehave.

Passive: You are advised not to misbehave.

03. Request

If the imperative sentences express request [Please/Kindly], this rule is follow.

Affirmative: You are requested to …………….

Negative: You are requested not to …………….

Active: Please help me.

Passive: You are requested to help me.

Active: Please don’t smoke here.

Passive: You are requested not to smoke here.

Voice Change [Sentence with “Let”]

If the active voice begins with “Let”, the following rule is used.

Voice Change Rule : Let + Object(Nonliving) + V- 3 + by + Object (Living).

Active:  Let me do the work now.

Passive: Le the work be done by me now.

Active: Let us forget the matter.

Passive: Let the matter be forgotten by us.

Voice Change Sentence [With Infinitive]

If we find infinitive in active voice, we have to use “Be” after ‘To’ and turn the infinite verb into past participle at the time of changing from active voice to passive voice.

For example:

Active: You have to do this sum.

Passive: This sum has to be done by you.

Active: They wanted to win the match.

Passive: They wanted to be won the match.

Voice Change of Verbal Noun Sentences

If we find the verbal noun in active voice, we have to use “Being” after the object and then the past participle form of the verbal noun.

Active: I saw the feeding of the monkeys.

Passive: I saw the monkeys being fed.

Active: They heard the opening of the coaching centre.

Passive: They heard the coaching centre being opened.

We can not change the voice if the sentences are with below verb and verbal noun.

The verbs die, appear, disappear, belong, despair, wonder, result, indulge, seem, happen, allude, occur, ensure, comprise, perish, issue and etc are intransitive verbs. So the sentences with these verbs are not changed into passive voice.

There are two ways to do voice change of complex sentence. I have showed the ways. If you read the example, you can understand the process.

Active: I know that she will sing a song.

Passive: That a song will be sung by her is known to me.

It is known to me that a song will be sung by her.

Active: They consider that he is honest.

Passive: It is considered by them that he is honest.

Passive to Active [Without Subject]

Many times we notice that who has completed the work is not mentioned in passive voice. When we change the passive voice into the active voice, we have to mention the subject. But there is no particular rule to select the subject. We can use one, someone, people, they, circumstance and so on as a subject depending on the situation.

Active: Traffic rules should be obeyed.

Passive: People should obey traffic rules.

Active: They were misguided.

Passive: Someone misguided them.

Voice Change Without “By” Preposition

At the time of voice change we normally use “By” before the subject of the active voice in passive voice. But we do not use “By” preposition in case of some verbs. I have given the verbs below. Read the examples carefully.

Active: I know the man.

Passive: The man is known to me.

Active: The dust covers the table.

Passive: The table is covered with the dust.

Active: The matter interested the girl.

Passive: The girl was interested in the matter.

List the verbs:

Marry, know – to

Alarm, surprise, annoy, shock,- at

Interest, pleased, change, offend, disgust, contain – with

Quasi-passive Voice Change Rule

Normally the sentences of quasi-passive voice are formed with the verbs like taste, feel, read, read, smell, cost, sound and so on. When we change those quasi-passive, we are taken the help of “When”. If you read the examples and try to understand the process. I hope it will be clear.

Active: Honey tastes sweet.

Passive: Honey is sweet when it is tasted.

Active: The bed feels soft.

Passive: The bed is soft when it is felt.

Quasi-passive Voice Without Complement

There are such sentences that have no complement in quasi-passive. And we use “Being” after helping verb and then past participle form of verb at the time of voice change of those sentences.

Active: The book is printing.

Passive: The book is being printed.

Active: The cows are milking.

Passive: The cows are being milked.

Active Sentence With Two Objects [Voice Change]

We get sometimes two objects in a sentence of active voice. But most of the students get nervous and they can not understand which object they will write first in passive voice. I hope you will easily understand the matter if you read the examples.

Active: He gave me a book.

Passive: A book was given me by him. / I was given a book by him.

Active: Biplab teaches us English.

Passive: English is taught us by Biplab./ We are taught English by Biplab.

Active Voice With Phrasal Verb [Voice Change]

If we notice phrasal verb in active voice, the prepositions that are with the phrasal verb are written. Even though we get more than one prepositions, we can not reject them.

Read the examples and then you can understand it.

Active: We should not look down upon the poor.

Passive: The poor should not be looked down upon by us.

Active: The boy laughed at the bagger.

Passive: The bagger was laughed at by the boy.

Active Voice With Reflexive Objects [Voice Change]

Read the below passage. There Voice change Rule of this type of active voice are mentioned.

If we find reflexive object in active voice, we should not use the reflexive object as a subject in passive voice. In this case we have to put a “Be verb” according to tense and use “By” before reflexive object. You can follow the examples.

Active: He killed himself.

Passive: He was killed by himself.

Active: They punish themselves.

Passive: They are punished by themselves.

Passive Voice (with Examples)

What is the difference between the active voice and the passive voice in English?

Compare these two sentences:

Active = “The doctor gave me a prescription” Passive = “I was given a prescription”

The first sentence is in the “active voice”. The subject is the doctor, and the verb is “gave”. In active sentences, the focus of the sentence is on the subject.

The second sentence is in the “passive voice”. The object of the sentence (“I”) becomes the focus of the sentence.

How to form a passive sentence

1. Firstly, you need to make the object (from the active sentence) into the new subject.

For example, in “John helped me”, “me” is the object. The subject form of “me” is “I”.

Here is a list of objects and subjects:

me – I you – You him / her – He / She us – We them – They

2. Then you make the verb passive.

Put the verb “to be” into the same tense as the verb in the active sentence. For example, in the sentence “John helped me”, “helped” is the past tense. Therefore, you need the past simple tense of the verb “to be”, which is “was” or “were”.

“I was…”

Here’s a list of tenses for the verb “to be”:

Present simple – am / are / is Present continuous – is being / are being Present perfect – has been / have been Simple past – was / were Past continuous – was being / were being Modals will, can etc – will be, can be etc.

3. Then add the past participle of the verb. For example “gave” – “given”, “help” – “helped”

“I was helped by John.” “I was given a prescription by the doctor.”

4. If necessary, you can say who did the action. To do this, add “by” at the end of your sentence. “She was awarded a degree by the University of London .”

When to use the passive voice

As a general rule, speak and write in the active voice. But passive forms can be useful in formal writing (such as scientific reports) when the emphasis is on process and results, rather than on who did the action.

1. To change the focus of a sentence. Sometimes, the object of the sentence is more important than the subject. We can change the focus of the sentence by changing an active sentence into a passive sentence. For example, in the following sentence, the focus is on beautiful designs and colours – not on who creates or chooses them.

“Our beautiful designs are created by a team of experts. The colours are carefully chosen to blend in with the surroundings…”

2. If we don’t know who does an action. “My bicycle has been stolen” – I don’t know who has stolen it.

3. If we don’t want to say who did something. “The lights were left on all night.” (I don’t want to say that you left the lights on.)

4. If it is obvious who does something. “I was given a prescription” – I know that only doctors give prescriptions, so I don’t need to add “by the doctor”. “He was arrested” I know that the police arrest people, so I don’t need to add “by the police”.

Verbs are essential to creating complete sentences, as they help us express physical actions ( She jumped in the puddle) , mental actions ( He thought about puppies) , and states of being ( I am hungry) .

There are several types of verbs that can each be written in different tenses, so they can be tricky to work with, especially if English isn’t your first language . We’ve put together a guide to help you use one of the most common verbs, do , in your writing . Read on below to learn more!

Action Verbs

As the name suggests, action verbs are used to express actions completed by the subject of a sentence. The base verb do is conjugated according to the tense:

1. Present Tense

In the present tense, do takes the form do or does, depending on the subject:

Consider the following examples:

We do our homework every night.

   She does her homework every night.

2. Past Tense

In the simple past tense , the base verb do takes the form did with all subjects:

   We did our homework last night.

   She did her homework last night.

Auxiliary Verbs

Auxiliary , or helping verbs, are used with another base verb to create negative sentences, questions, or add emphasis. Here’s how do should be used as an auxiliary verb:

1. Negative Sentences

Following the same subject–verb pairings introduced above, we combine the auxiliaries do , does , and did with the adverb not to create negative sentences:

   We do not do our homework every night.

   She did not do her homework last night.

Note that we can combine the auxiliary and the adverb to create the contractions don’t , doesn’t , and didn’t . You simply remove the space between the two words and replace the letter o in not with an apostrophe (’).

Contractions are more common in conversations and informal writing and typically shouldn’t be used in formal writing (e.g., academic or business).

2. Questions

To create questions, the auxiliary is combined with the infinitive of another verb in this way: auxiliary verb + subject + infinitive verb .

●  Simple present questions:

Do they sell children’s books?

Does he speak English?

Note that the third person verb speaks isn’t spelled with the s when paired with the auxiliary to form a question.

●  Simple past questions:

Did you buy anything at the bookstore?

Did he learn how to speak English?

Note that did indicates the past tense, so the main verbs don’t also take the past tense (i.e., bought and learned ).

3. Emphasis

In positive sentences, we can also combine the auxiliaries do , does , and did with the main verb to emphasize that something is true:

   We do sell children’s books.

   He did learn to speak English.

Try saying these sentences aloud and adding emphasis to the auxiliary terms with your tone. It adds a dramatic effect!

Voice Change Class 10

When the subject of the sentence is the doer of the action it is in Active Voice and when something is done to the subject it is said to be in Passive voice.

When the doer does the work itself it is called Active Voice and when the work is assigned to the doer it is called Passive Voice.

Active: Rina sees the moon.

Passive: The moon is seen by Rina.

Active: The cat kills a rat.

Passive: The rat is killed by the cat.

Remember: To convert Active to Passive, the subject, verb, and object of the sentence must be extracted first. 

The object can be obtained by questioning the verb with what or whom. Then you have to see which tense the verb is in.

Because while doing the passive voice, the fixed form of the ‘be’ verb has to be put in the tense and then the Past Participle of the main verb has to be used.

Rules for Voice Change Class 10

The Subject of Active Voice sits as the Agent in Passive Voice. It is preceded by the preposition “by”. In some cases at, with, to, etc.

In Active voice, the verb is in Tense, in Passive Voice, the subject is associated with Person and Number. The prescribed form sits. Then the past participle of the main verb is placed..

The modal verb in active voice is used in passive voice. Then add ‘be’ and use the past participle of the main verb.

The object or action of the Active voice sits as the Subject in Passive Voice.

If two objects in an active voice | If there is, one has to make Subject while doing Passive. The other remains after the Past Participle form of the original verb. It is called retained object.

If the Subject of the Active voice is a Noun, the Passive is uninflected as the Object. But if the Pronoun is the objective form of a Pronoun.

“Shall” has a few different uses.

1) It can mean the same thing as “I will” — “I will tell you tomorrow”/”I shall tell you tomorrow”.

2) It can be used to talk about something that has to be done, or to tell people to do something. “Students shall write their names at the top of the page.”

3) It can be used in questions — to talk about something that could happen, or make a suggestion. “Shall I come back later?” could mean that you are asking someone if you should come back later or not, or that you are suggesting you could come back later if they want.

“Shall” is very common in the UK, but not at all in North America. In North America we would use “will”/”must”/”will” + “maybe”/”could” instead.

Engvid is a great ESL site .in fact you have special technique in teaching and I’d like to ask you to teach me how to think of things with their English name not with my original language and then translate it to English thank a lot.

Thinking of things in English and not in your original language is not something I can teach you… it is something that must happen in your brain. Once you begin to “switch your brain” over to English, then you can begin to think of words in English. I can only suggest going to an English speaking country, or talking to yourself in English.

We must say “She/He doesn’t have” because the auxiliary verb “do” is the only verb you need to change to suit the subject.

Ah… you are confused because the usage of “whom” and “I” are old school grammar book rules! Whereas “who” and “me” we use nowadays! So, in very OLD FORMAL English, the correct answers are 1.I, 3)I, 5)whom, 6)whom but in spoken English (which ignores a lot of the rules) we would use me, me, who, and who! Hope that helps!

“Are you going there?” is to ask if you plan to go somewhere in the future. Eg: “Are you going to the gym tomorrow?” “Do you go there?” is to ask if the person frequents a place. Eg: “Do you go to Starbucks?” “Do you go to the gym?” — They are asking if you go to these places a lot!

For “does” and “doesn’t” you forgot the pronoun “it.”

Example: ‘It ((the toaster)) doesn’t ususally work. It does sometimes work after I whack it a bit.’ I suggest a dding the nonpersonal pronoun “it” to this lecture — as well as the use of non-pronoun subjects with “do,” “does,” etc.

“He likes her” is how we normally say that one person likes another. “He DOES like her”, is ONLY to emphasize that he indeed does like her! ”She does not like him because he is very meaning her”…. Was/were is the past form of “to be” verb. I was here. We were at the park. Did is the past form of do. We use for actions.,,,, I did my homework. I did the laundry. Have/has is present, had is past tense. We use to show possession – I have 5 dogs. She has a headache. I hope that helps!

Verbs are difficult – just try to learn 2-3 a day and use them in a sentence…..Don`t try to learn too many at once! Your brain may explode!

I think it depends on how you learn – some people can just learn by listening, others need to see the words, others need a more physical learning environment. Everyone is different. When I learned Japanese I had to write down the words to remember how to say them….but I didn’t learn the grammar!

In the example “Does she have”, we have to change only the aux. verb do to reflect the noun…..We don’t have to change any other verb….We don’t say “Does she has”….. I don’t know WHY – I have no idea why we have ALL they grammar rules that we do – they don’t make sense to me!!

Your question is not silly! It is a very good question as many people are confused with to be and do! First of all do/does IS NOT part of “to be”! “To be” is only am, is, or are! Basically, if you have an adjective in the sentence, you are going to use “to be” Ex… I am tired. Tired is an adjective so you cannot say I do tired! I am hungry. She is thirsty. They are smart. “Do” is an action verb, and we use it with a noun- “I do my homework”. Homework is a noun. You cannot say I am homework!!! He does aerobics. She does the dishes, They do math.

Hi Ronnie, I have come accross this site trying to find help for my son (grade 3) with his English. He often makes mistakes with the use of “done” and I don’t know how to explain to him the correct usage, I can only tell him when it sounds wrong. Can you simplify when it is correct to use the word done as in, I did, I have done? The other day I done, I did?

Done we use with present/past perfect, or as an adjective “I am done”. You cannot use done in simple past.

Doesn’t = does ….they are the same. As well, haven’t ”have not,haven’t”,”did not,didn’t”. The only difference is that we use the shortened more and save the longer ones (have not) to make our point stronger. Preety is not a word. Pretty??? Pretty means beautiful and very.

I am not too sure what you mean but…. babies suck on a bottle. If i drink from a bottle I put my lips on it – we don’t have a special word for this! To tell someone, I would just say my lips touched the bottle.

I noticed that Americans use “don’t” with it and he very often!!! in spoken English, even in the songs! For example: … and even forever don’t seem like long enough … or he don’t know what to do!!! Mr. Rajkumar, “don’t” and “doesn’t are both negative in the sentence. The difference is the first sentence is first person singular, and second is third person singular.

Harsha, both sentence are correct. “Has” is the third person singular of the present tense “have”. In the first sentence “does have” means you want to emphasize something.

The present tense is the base form of the verb:

I work in London. 

But with the third person singular ( she / he / it ), we add an –s :

The near future is not a fixed time which we can describe in this way. It is a question of how the speaker sees the action or situation. If the speaker sees the situation as permanent or unlikely to change for what they consider a long time then the present simple will be used. If the speaker sees it as temporary then the present continuous will be used. Sometimes a temporary situation can last year if in the speaker's mind it is going to change at some point. It's not a question of how long but rather how the speaker sees things.

I can say 'I study physics' even though I know the course only lasts four years because I don't anticipate it stopping. I can say 'I'm living in London' even if I think I'll be in London for a decade because I don't see it as my home but rather a place I'm in for a certain time. It's a question of perspective and it's subjective.

In the Simple Present Tense, we often use 'do' and 'does' as auxiliary verbs to emphasize positive sentences and commands. For example, 'I do speak' and 'He does come' However, when 'do' is used as a main verb, can we also use 'do' or 'does' for emphasis in sentences like- I do do. He does do. And similarly, can we use 'do' for emphasis in commands like- Do do.

Yes, it is grammatically fine, including in commands (imperatives). As you suspected, these sentences sound a bit unusual because of the double "do", but they are grammatical.

I should mention that "do" as a main verb requires an object or a complement, so the first set of sentences should be something like:

• I do do (well).
• He does do (a good job).
• Do do (that).

There goes the bus  - "There" is an adverb of place. It indicates a particular place or space (while in the previous sentence, in the most common use of "There is", "There" indicates the existence of something, with a weaker meaning of pointing to a particular place or space). The normal word order is inverted too. The subject is "the bus".

Grammatically, there's no problem with using present continuous to explain what you are doing in that moment ( I'm cutting here ... I'm looping it ... ). The present continuous focuses on what's happening at a particular moment.

But since you probably have many steps to make the final product, it would be unusual to use the present continuous to focus on every single step. It's more usual to use the present simple to describe a sequence of actions like this. But, while mainly using the present simple, you can also use present continuous at particular times to emphasise important moments or actions.

My sense is that we typically use the present continuous to describe an image, unless we're using link or stative verbs.

Imagine an image of a family having a picnic on the grass in a park. We'd typically say things like 'The mother is giving the children some fruit', 'The father is arranging the blanket', 'The girl is drinking some water' to describe actions -- note all the present continuous forms here. But we do also use the present simple quite a bit, e.g. 'The boy looks hungry', 'The father is happy', 'The girl wants to play football', etc. These are all stative or link verbs.

But of course if we're talking about an image of a picnic we were at some time in the past, we'd probably use a range of past tense forms.

In a speaking exam where we're asked to speculate what will happen next in an image, we of course would use appropriate forms there as well.

1. The present simple is fine here. The exams are a scheduled event and the present simple is appropriate for this. You could use other forms. Will be taking is often used for expected events or actions, and are taking is also possible for arrangements. Will take is possible but would suggest a decision being taken by the speaker rather than a description of the situation. The present perfect does not work here as it suggests an action which began in the past and continues to the present, not one beginning in the present and extending into the future.

2. The present simple is very common in news headline. If you look at the article you will see other verb forms used in the main body, such as present perfect and past simple.

The second sentence tells us that your mom prepares your lunch while you are in the process of eating breakfast.

The first sentence is ambiguous. It could mean that your mom waits until you have breakfast and then starts to prepare lunch. Maybe you prepare your breakfast and the kitchen is only available for her to prepare lunch once you sit down to eat, for example. Alternatively, it could mean that on certain days you don't have breakfast and on certain days you do and on the days when you have breakfast your mom prepares your lunch. Without any other context it's not clear.

The present simple is used for the main sequence of events (i.e. the things that happened). The present continuous is used for events which are a background to others, as in the example above ("While we are standing there ..." - it seems that "standing there" was the background action to another action that happened). In that way, the use is similar to the use of the past simple and past continuous in a conventional past narrative.

The present continuous can also be used to heighten even further the effect of being in the moment. Adapting the example above, for example: "Well, he's looking a bit dangerous so I'm not feeling sure ..."

But in questions or negatives, 'do' and 'does' are auxiliary verbs: in 'He doesn't work on Monday', 'doesn't' is an auxiliary verb; 'work' is the main verb. It's also possible for 'do' to be both an auxiliary and a main verb in a sentence where the main verb is 'do': 'He doesn't do much work' ('doesn't' is auxiliary, 'do' is main).

I'm not sure I understand your second question. If you are asking about 'how', 'how to bake a cake' is simple a phrase. A phrase can take the place of a simple noun. For example, we could replace the phrase with a noun like 'Judy' ('Do you know Judy?') and the sentence structure is the same.

This is actually quite common in spoken English. Normally, we use past forms for telling stories (narratives). In fact, the verb forms past simple, past continuous, past perfect simple and past perfect continuous are collective sometimes known as 'narrative tenses'. However, when we are recounting a story in a more informal setting (such as telling a joke or a sharing an anecdote), we can use present forms to give a sense of immediacy and to bring the story more to life. As you can see from this text, it's possible to begin with past forms and then switch to present forms for effect.

Present forms can even be used in this way in writing and even in novels. Some well-known examples include One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (Ken Kesey), Bleak House (Charles Dickens) and The Hunger Games (Suzanne Collins).

I have gone through the article on present simple. It is wonderfully written and has covered its different uses.

What I learnt is that it can be used to talk about the scheduled future events, for example: - 1. The school term starts next week. 2. The train leaves at 19:45 this evening. 3. We fly to Paris next week.

I'm glad that you found the page useful. I think you'd find the Talking about the future page useful as well, as it compares the different forms most commonly used to speak about the future. It doesn't cover all possible uses, but is definitely quite useful.

In theory, the three sentences with 'will' could be correct in an appropriate situation, but I'm afraid I'm having a hard time thinking of an example for any of them. The present simple ones are much more commonly used.

Yes, it's possible to use past tenses to summarise. People often use present tenses when telling a story because it makes the story seem more alive or more real. The present tense reflects the reality of the listener, who is finding out about the story in the moment they are hearing it.

In a summary, the present can have a similar sense, or it can also have the sense that the story (or film or whatever) is something that is kind of timeless since it can be told at any time. That is, you can read the book now or read it in the future, and other people read it in the past. It might help to think of the story as a building or the sunrise. Both existed yesterday, are happening today, and we expect them to exist or happen again tomorrow. Just as we say 'The sun rises in the morning', we can use a present simple form to tell or summarise a story.

I hope that's helpful (and not more confusing!). In any case, it's OK to use the past to make a summary of a story, but the present is quite commonly used as well.

In these cases, the past tense shows that those actions happened before the actions in present tense. The present tense is used to narrate the action or 'current' situation in the story, but, as you have noticed, other tenses can be used when it's necessary to refer to other times.

If this is the full sentence then it is an imperative form. The imperative is used when giving instructions or commands and it is the same as the base form:

Give me my book!

The negative is formed with don't :

Don't go in - the boss is in a meeting.

Don't do that.

Hi, I'd like to ask about adverbs of frequency. I read on your website ( teens ) we can use them at the beginning or at the end of a sentence. As you've already observed, the position of adverbs is quite slippery; they are used in many different ways. Our grammar explanations don't go into all the details because it's generally best to learn the basics first and then beyond that it's usually best to have a teacher explain the more complex cases.

Those are a lot of questions! I'm afraid I can't go into depth on all of them, but, taking your question about adverbs of definite frequency, as I understand it, they generally go in front position when they are not the main focus of the idea. For example, if you say 'Every morning I study for 15 minutes', the main focus is on the fact that it's studying that you do every morning; the focus is not on the fact that it is the morning that you do this, but rather that it is studying that you do.

Most adjectives can be used before a noun (e.g. in 'The red house is new', the adjective 'red' comes before the noun 'house'; this position of the adjective before the noun is called 'attributive position') or after a link verb (e.g. in 'The house is red', the adjective 'red' comes after the link verb 'is'; this position of the adjective after a link verb is called 'predicative position').

But there are some adjectives that are only used in attributive position or predicative position. 'main' is an adjective that is only used in attributive position -- you can see this in this dictionary entry where it says ' adjective   [ only before noun ] '.

Therefore I'm afraid that your sentence is not correct in normal usage. You could perhaps say something like 'My idea is the main one' or 'My idea is central' instead.

No, we generally don't use 'will' in the if-clause. The exception is when we want to say something like 'if you are so stubborn and insist on...' or 'if you refuse to change'. For example:

If you will arrive late then you will have problems > If you refuse to change and insist on arriving late then you will have problems.

Obviously the weather cannot insist on anything as it is not a person so this rare exception does not apply here.

By the way, strictly speaking English has no future tense. 'Will' is a modal verb which can refer to future time but can also have other meanings. In many cases you can replace 'will' with other modal verbs:

I will go tomorrow > I might/may/should/could/can/ought to/must (etc) go tomorrow.

The following formula should be used for passive voice for assertive sentence: O +  h.v. + p.p + by + p.p.

Ans:  They have deceived her. 4. We have told him the reality. Ans:  He has been told the reality by us or      The reality has been told to him by us 5. They had asked different types of problems. Ans:  Different types of problems had been asked by them. Example For Practice: 1. I have consoled him many times. 2. I have always neglected this problem. 3. She had reprimanded the servant. 4.
