However from both perspectives, the book lacks depth and purpose, which is unfortunate since the author was not writing about some far off land but about his own country and their people. The problem with the book lies in its ambiguously developed characters and a general lack of central theme. The novel is about Tamil-government war in Sri Lanka that also brings in discussion on general political conditions in this part of the world. Sri Lanka is terrorized by decades of civil war, which has left an indelible mark on the country in terms of economic and political decline. Anil has been assigned a masculine name and some so-called masculine attributes but they do not help in advancing the story or making it any better. The one reason why Anil's character has not been developed properly is because Ondaatje has left many details un-discussed while he focusing on unnecessary stories. For example, after her parents' death, Anil decided she would never return to her country. But why? The author never bothers to explain. This story would have been more meaningful and important than the story about her name. What was it about Sri Lanka that made her decide never to visit the place again? Did her parents paint a negative picture of their native land? We will never know since the author casually left out these details. Her name is masculine because Anil is supposedly portrayed as a rebel. But where the rebellion began and what was she rebelling against? Anil never actually had to do any real rebelling since her parents left the country when she was a young girl and there were no obstacles in her way of achieving her goals and dreams. So what kind of rebel was she? She appears to be a stereotypical feminist character that is presented as a rebel because that's how the world sees them. There is no specific cause for her becoming a rebel and even if she is one, her rebellious streak doesn't serve any real purpose in the book. There is a thick solipsistic fog surrounding all characters and is more pronounced in the case of Anil since she is playing the most important role in the novel. The foggy portrayal is what makes the characters appear shallow and disoriented. There is no real connection between them and between the characters and the story. All appear lost in their own world of confused perceptions to observe and judge the world around with accuracy and honesty.

An Introduction to Sri Lankan Literature

Sri Lanka, which boasts a 92% rate of literacy—the highest in South Asia and among the highest in Asia—has a long storytelling tradition. What is perhaps special about literature in this country is the extent to which the oral tradition has complemented a vast body of literature spanning many genres in written form. Given the powerful impetus that Buddhism had and has on scholarship and literature in Sri Lanka, both prose and verse in the country have drawn heavily from Buddhist parables. Even in the oral tradition, complex philosophical concepts and ideas are illustrated using stories from the Buddha’s life as well as the jathaka stories, i.e. narratives of the past lives of Siddhartha Gauthama.

For these reasons, perhaps, Sri Lanka is blessed with a rich repository of narratives and narrative styles in the written and oral traditions as well as a population that is culturally ready to receive such narratives; it was not the preserve of “writers” and “scholars.” There are numerous examples where “literature” (especially in verse form), is depicted as an integral part of communication and debate, embedded in rituals where the focus was on dance or exorcism, with all vocations, particularly agriculture, and even used to comment on social, cultural, religious, ideological, economic, and political issues.

Naturally, earlier works in the Sri Lankan canon have been significantly influenced by the styles prevalent in the rest of the Indian subcontinent, but alongside these there has developed a considerable volume of authentically “local” literary works reflecting on kings and significant historical events as well as the lives of ordinary folk. This archive of work holds innumerable potential for a very personal encounter with Sri Lankan literature.

Tamil literature is similarly inspired by works from centuries past, but has the added advantage of being able to draw from the literary traditions of the South of India where the language is spoken too. The literary history of Tamil writers in Sri Lanka is far less voluminous than that of their Sinhala counterparts, due partly to a fractured historical presence on the island and the absence of an equivalent temple-based system of education, but the oral traditions cannot be said to be any less rich.

In more recent times, events and processes whose human impact has been more immediate, including the three-decade-long armed conflict that rent the island, have found expression in literary works in both languages. The post-Independence period has been marked in literature and civic life by nationalistic despair, euphoria, cataclysmic political and social upheaval, and by resilience. Nonetheless, insurrections, armed conflict, devastation by tsunami, floods and drought, diseases like Dengue that verge on epidemics, the constitutional denial of democracy, and other governance ills have not stopped writing and reading in Sri Lanka. Indeed, both have thrived as a response to these issues. Tens of thousands of book-lovers flock to the annual International Book Fair in Colombo, arriving in the commercial capital from all parts of the country. And, in recent years, there has been a resurgence of small publishing companies.

Consider the fact that a tiny English-speaking population submits over fifty manuscripts every year for the prestigious Gratiaen Award (for English literature) and one can get some idea of the volume of writing in the indigenous languages of Sinhala and Tamil. The fact that there is a thriving market for translations (from English into those languages) is also indicative of the thirst for literature in Sri Lanka. Books sell, in short, and so writers write. What is perhaps lamentable is the often poor quality of translations from Sinhala and Tamil into English and other languages and of course the small number of good translations, when they do occur.

The authors featured as well as the translators are well-known writers among the post-Independence literary voices of the nation; their contribution to the literary canon is widely recognized within the country. Through their work we offer here a slice that gives a hint of the flavor of Sri Lankan writing, rather than represent the full flush of its depth and substance.

Simon Navagaththegama’s The Hunter is a book that has been read in Marxian, Freudian, and Buddhist terms and its amenability to multiple interpretations speaks of its intricate crafting. It is a simple plot, focusing on the relationship between a hunter and the Buddhist monk or bikkhu whom he attends in a jungle retreat. The sparse dialogue is compensated for by the subtle descriptions of the hunter’s engagement with the surrounding jungle and its creatures.

Ariyawansa Ranaweera has an eye for the simple, those things we see but rarely let our eyes dwell upon or find interesting enough to merit further reflection. His forte is an ability to pick the ordinary and spin simple reflection into it in a way that conjures images and invites meditation. In “ At the Supermarket ,” the poet observes both the ingredients used in the most humble of Sri Lankan cuisine— the flower of the plantain tree and the seed of the jak tree—and the rich who purchase these items; it is a sleight of hand that celebrates village life while making a comment on the wealthy for whom the elements of that life are mere acquisitions.

The context for Kalaivaathy Kaleel’s story, “ Rizana ,” is socio-economic. Rizana was an underage girl whose birth certificate was altered to “qualify” her for a job in Saudi Arabia as a domestic worker, and who was accused of murdering an infant. The case was controversial and, despite international outrage, she was sentenced to death and executed. Rizana’s case spawned much debate on a number of social and political issues pertaining to poverty, foreign employment, corruption, and the efficiency or lack thereof of diplomatic missions. There was also much discussion on the “religious” prerogatives of Saudi/Islamic laws.

These selections, though short, provide a brief but wide-ranging glimpse into the complexity of the religious and social underpinnings of Sri Lankan literature.

My country Sri Lanka My country is Sri Lanka. It is an island situated in the Indian Ocean. It is known as the ‘Pearl of the Indian Ocean’. It is a beautiful country. The largest river in Sri Lanka is the Mahaweli and the highest mountain is Piduruthalagala. The highest waterfall is Bambarakanda.

The capital of my country is Sri Jayewardenepura Kotte and the commercial capital is Colombo. The president of my country is Hon. Maithripala Sirisena and the prime minister is Hon. Ranil Wickramasinghe.

Our national flag is called the Lion Flag. Our national flower is the Blue Water Lily, national tree is Na tree, national bird is the Jungle Fowl, national animal is the Giant Squirrel and our national sport is Volleyball. But Sri Lanka is famous for Cricket. The world’s best tea comes from Sri Lanka.

On February 4, 1948 Sri Lanka gained independence. Our national anthem is ‘Sri Lanka Matha’.  The official languages in Sri Lanka  are Sinhala, Tamil and English.

My country is a peaceful country where all the religions such as Buddhists, Christians, Muslims and Hindus all live in harmony. I am so proud to be a Sri Lankan. I love my motherland Sri Lanka a lot.

Ramazan Ramadhan is the month of fasting. Every Muslim of all ages takes part in the fast. Ramadan, the annual fast, falls in the ninth month of the Muslim calendar. Those who fast, must neither take food nor drink throughout the hours of daylight. Above all, they must keep away from things shameful, and telling lies.

Fasting can be a little difficult when it falls during summer. Though it will be a little difficult, a Muslim fasts joyfully in any season, obeying the orders of Allah. There are Muslims who love summertime fasting the most. There is a deep relationship between Ramadhan and the Holy Quran. Those who fast, turn again and again to the Holy Quran because Allah revealed it in the month of Ramadhan to our Holy Prophet Muhammed.

We all enjoy watching television. One of the main reasons which we watch television is to gain knowledge. Some knowledgeable channels are NatGeo, Discovery, NDTV Good times, NatGeo Geography etc. These channels are based on all about the world and types of people, natural disasters, ancient and historical places and many more.

There are also other useful as well as fun and interesting channels. For example, FoxLife is a channel which displays different types of food and recipes. They tell us about types of food eaten in various parts of the world. We as kids love watching animated programmes which can be found on Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, Pogo and many more. We can watch cartoons such as Tom and Jerry which have a moral.

It teaches us not to fight and quarrel and instead to live in peace, friendship and harmony. News is one of the most important programmes that we must watch. We must make it a habit of watching at least one news episode a day as there are many news updates daily from early morning until midnight.

By watching these types of important programmes we can develop our brain and learn a lot about the world. We can also watch cartoon but not too much as it may affect our eyesight and brain.

Trees give us wood to make houses, buildings, furniture etc. The most important things is that they give us oxygen to breathe. Trees make our earth clean and beautiful. We must not cut trees. It takes only a few minutes to cut a tree but it takes years to grow.

Shops are closed for the day, Darkness appears little by little And the night dominates.

An unforgettable trip We went on a trip to England for a few months. I had lots of fun while we were travelling. It was a great experience for us. We went there after two days. I was so excited. After we went there we had lots of fun playing tennis. Then at night we settled in a great five-star hotel. We had our dinner from that hotel. It was very delicious. Then in the morning we went to our uncle’s house. It was near the hotel. All of us went to Bits Park to play. We were very fortunate because it was winter season as well as snowy days. We made a snowman and played with snowballs. Then after a few days, my parents as well as my uncle entered me into a famous school in England. It is called ‘Richard Rose Morton Academy.’ It was a turning point in my life. I learned to speak English properly from my school. That’s why I respect my school. My life was changed from that day. I met a myriad of friends called Daisy, Molly and Kara. My sister and my brother also entered into a school. I have never seen snow before that day. We went to see a duck park. It was a fantastic park. That’s how I spent my trip. I can’t forget it forever.

My hobby A hobby is nothing but to have a change in the routine work. It is a happy union of profit and pleasure. Hobby is also man’s past time. There are varieties of hobbies. My hobby is gardening.

I spend my leisure hours in my garden. My garden is in front of my house. I have prepared the flower beds and planted varieties of flowering plants. The plants give out a sweet scent in the evening. I love being in the garden and I watch the butterflies. I water the plants and enjoy the nature of the pure air in the evening. I water the plants twice a day during the summer. I dig out the withered plants and plant new ones.

I talk to the plants and sing to them. I feel as if my plants nod their heads in agreement. All plants are living things. My hobby gives me happiness and some exercise for my body. My hobby satisfies my inner urge and gets an emotional response.
