Personal Statement - Equine Rehabilitation and Therapy

Personal Statement

“Riding a horse is not a gentle hobby, to be picked up and laid down like a game of solitaire. It is a grand passion. It seizes a person whole and once it has done so, she will have to accept that her life will be radically changed.” This quote by Ralph Emerson defines my relationship with horses. As a child growing up in London, life was always fast paced and, at times, quite hectic. However for as long as I can remember there was always an escape from the London life. During school holidays, we would all pile into the car and drive up the M6 to a little farm in Scotland where my family owns a few horses. It was there that I learnt to ride on the hills of rural Scotland, and I found something that I didn’t even realise I wanted or needed. It changed me as a person and now I couldn’t imagine life without it. As I grew up and matured, so did my riding. I learnt to ride on the back of a little naughty pony around a field, and it is in the same setting that I developed as a rider, and a person.

I have found studying A levels at Esher College challenging at times, but I have persevered. I’m committed and eager to improve and understand the range of topics covered. In Biology, I have learned large amounts of content and am getting better at using this to answer exam questions.

From an early age, whenever asked about what I’d like to do when I grow up, my answer has always been ‘a professional horse rider’. As time has passed and I’ve matured as a person, that dream has never faded, but developed into something bigger, and more meaningful. I decided to specialise in a degree that involved equine rehabilitation or therapy because after university, I’d like to go into a job where I can work with horses to rehabilitate and rehome them. I want to make a difference and help an animal to progress and reach their full potential. My experience of working on a stable yard in 2010 showed me the blunt reality of what it was like, but even so I still loved it. Just being around the horses on a daily basis and helping to provide the structure that allowed everything to run so smoothly was gratifying in itself.

I am very conscious of the world around me, and in 2010 I threw myself into volunteering. Campaigning with organisations like the National Aids Trust, Battersea Dogs and Cats Home and Parkinson’s UK. My work as a volunteer has made me a more considerate and responsible person, and I am constantly looking for new projects and organisations that I can get involved with. That compassion was reflected in 2011 when I became a mentor to the younger children in my school, helping them through hard times that I similarly faced. Over the last 2 years I have also been involved with a local dance group, taekwondo club and regularly participate in long and short distance runs for charity like the Sports Relief 6 mile run, and the London to Brighton bike ride.

My love for horses and riding will extend into my gap year, where I plan to travel to Australia to experience the true outback and work with the horses on ranches around the country, learning different styles and finding new purpose to riding. In the new year I will move on to New Zealand where I will spend a few weeks working as a horse trek guide, riding around one of the most beautiful settings in the world. Overall my gap year has been tailored to allow me to experience some of the most beautiful and exciting areas of the world, and to experience horse riding in a completely different environment. However this has only been possible through part time jobs over the last year, which has given me responsibility and a greater sense of independence.

Hi guys, I'm asking this favour on behalf of a very disorganised friend who has just decided to apply for a place on equine degree courses and her personal statement needs to be in by the end of next week. If anyone has a personal statement that they used for an equine course of any kind I'd be extremely grateful if you wouldn't mind her having a look at it. I work in student recruitment and have personal statements coming out of my ears at the mo! Firstly, keep it between 300-500 words, once printed out the UCAS application form is pretty small so try to keep it within this amount. The Personal Statement is your opportunity to sell yourself to the admissions manager (who usually makes the decision on whether to offer you a place or not). Tell them why you want to study this subject, what you want to do once you have graduated (keep it trelevant to the subject choice) and why you would be suitable for the3 course. Anything that shows you are motivated and interested - academics like an easy life and someone who wants to learn is always going to be easier to teach than someone who is not particularly interested. Admissions staff get loads of applications, so try to make yours individual. They are also fully aware that many personal statements are not always written by the student, but there is little they can do about it. Just don't rub their nose in it. Try to make it as original as you can, and by that I mean relevant to you. You've left it pretty late since the deadline is on the 15th, having said this given what is going on with tuition fees at the mo, universities are going to be desperate for students and it's a buyers market. Just be careful where you choose to study as with the withdrawal of government funding there will be a lot of smaller/newer universities going under/merging in the next couple of years. Sample Veterinary Personal Statement

Having always been interested in animals, my fascination has only increased as my understanding of their biology has grown. Looking into the twin processes of evolution and selective breeding has allowed me to understand some of the genetic drawbacks that certain species face, such as ventricular septal defects in bulldogs, and has awoken a desire within me to apply this knowledge to diagnosis and treatment. Veterinary medicine offers an opportunity to combine this concern for animal welfare with an ever-changing, intellectually stimulating professional environment.

Convinced of my desire to study veterinary medicine I have concentrated my studies on science and maths, particularly excelling in Biology, demonstrating my natural affinity with the subject and laying an excellent foundation for study. Chemistry and Physics have rounded out my understanding of the sciences, while Maths has improved my ability to approach problems in a rational, measured manner. My overall performance at GCSE demonstrates my positive attitude to study and my willingness to work hard to succeed in all subjects.

In addition to my commitment to studying the relevant subjects and increase my knowledge, I have undertaken a range of work experience to further my awareness of what the job actually entails. Beginning with a 2-week placement, where I assisted with preparing work surfaces prior to surgery or consultations and holding dogs and cats during injections. It was particularly impressive to see that way in which the vet approached all situations calmly, utilising impressive interpersonal skills when dealing with owners. Observing and assisting with consultations and surgery at Fern Cottage Veterinary Surgery allowed me observe the differences between practicing in South Africa and practising in the UK, offering employment experience across an international context. At Sjeal Arabian Horse Stud Farm I learnt about the connected processes of husbandry and breeding, and a vet’s role within them, as well as worming horses and observing a farrier at work. By developing this knowledge at Eye Horn Farm Stables, where I gained experience of checking for soundness and laminitis in racehorses, I have gained a strong sense of equine treatment in particular. A week spent lambing at a local farm, where I learnt about the Bluetongue virus and the Culicoides midge, also introduced me to the basics of veterinary medicine within a farming context.

Outside of my academic interests I am a keen sportsman, applying the same dedication to training as I have to my studies and work experience. As a Silver Sports Ambassador, I am charged with promoting Olympic values and encouraging younger members of my community to get involved in sport. This is a particularly exciting opportunity for me to pass on my passion for rugby, having played for both Sheppey RFC and my school team for a number of years. I also enjoy combining my passion for sport with raising money for charity, regularly running in the Paul Trigwell Island Run. Perhaps my proudest achievement was forming part of an expedition to Tanzania, which included summiting Kilimanjaro and working to improve a local primary school. While also improving my teamwork and leadership skills, this expedition allowed me to experience a different culture and has instilled in me a love of travelling.

As a hardworking student , I have applied the same dedicated attitude to my studies as I have to gaining employment experience in my chosen field. Through work experience and attending a Vetsim course, where I developed a particular interest in avian veterinary surgery that I would be keen to develop later, I have gained a real sense of what working within the field entails and am convinced that, as an empathetic person with excellent communication skills and a strong affinity with animal welfare issues, I have what it takes to make a real contribution to veterinary medicine.

Veterinary medicine personal statement example 3.

From the age of three when I got my first pet, I have always held a strong passion for animals and their wellbeing. Whether I was helping to take care of my cats or visiting the local stables, I have been surrounded by animals from birth. However, it wasn't until a hamster of mine became extremely ill, that I realised the effect that vets can have on the lives of both animals and people. I too wanted the chance to be able to help the lives of not only animals, but the people who love them.

My childhood ambition to practice veterinary medicine was fuelled further at around the age of eight when a veterinary nurse from our local veterinary practice visited my brownies group. Instantly enthralled by her descriptions of what life was like working in a veterinary practice, I can remember thinking that I wanted nothing more than to become a vet.

At the age of ten, I started riding lessons and spent much of my time learning how to look after and care for the horses stabled there. This helped to increase my knowledge of animals and inspired me further to become a vet. At the age of fifteen, I was lucky enough to be bought my own horse and my experience and knowledge grew from there.

I have been regularly competing my horse at local competitions in various disciplines, but in particular show jumping. I have also been working at a DIY livery yard on weekends for several months to gain more experience working with a variety of different horses and their owners. I have also gained some experience with small animals through puppy sitting on several occasions.

Last year I spent two weeks gaining work experience at a local equine veterinary practice, from which I gained an invaluable insight into the day-to-day running of a veterinary practice and life as a veterinary surgeon. Whilst there, I witnessed two operations in the form of a rig operation and an operation to fix a club foot in a colt. Witnessing these operations fascinated and intrigued me and only heightened my desire to one day carry out similar operations myself. I also watched and helped with various other procedures whilst at the veterinary practice, such as nerve blocking, gastroscopy and the treatment of a mare with an infected uterus.

Academically, I have always thoroughly enjoyed science, and in particular biology and chemistry. I recently attended a symposium on neurology which I found to be extremely interesting and insightful. I have also assisted in physics with primary school children in a girls in engineering day run by my school, helped teach a science lesson once a fortnight for a year and demonstrated dissections during the open evening for my school.

As well as this, I have held several different roles of responsibility whilst at school and sixth form. These include being elected as a prefect in year eleven, being a member of the school's student voice for the past three years, and a sixth form leader in the student voice for the past two. Alongside this I have taken part in fundraising events, such as carwashes in aid of Farleigh hospice. My interests outside of animals and science include history, running, writing, reading and music. I am currently studying to take my grade 5 in piano this winter and also enjoy playing the guitar and bass guitar on a regular basis. I also run regularly and am currently training for the 2012 London marathon.

I believe that studying veterinary medicine at university can only increase my passion for animals and will allow me to fulfil my ambition to become a veterinary surgeon, as well as enabling me to become a more responsible and well-rounded person.
