Learning Styles Essay

Education is important. Learning is important. But what’s the best way to learn? That’s where learning styles come in.

There are three main learning styles: visual, auditory, and kinesthetic. And each person tends to have a preferred learning style. Some people may even use a combination of all three learning styles.

Visual learners prefer to learn by seeing information. This could mean reading texts or watching videos. Auditory learners prefer to learn by hearing information. This could mean listening to lectures or taking part in conversations. Kinesthetic learners prefer to learn by doing things. This could mean participating in hands-on activities or simulations.

It might be difficult to learn for some. If you don’t understand how you learn and absorb information, that may be the case. Fortunately, contemporary educators are becoming more aware of their students’ learning styles and are able to adapt to meet them.

In this learning styles essay, we’ll look at the definition of learning styles and how educators can use them to benefit their students.

Most people learn using a combination of all three methods, but everyone has a preference for one particular style. The VARK model is a widely used way of determining an individual’s preferred learning style. This model identifies four main types of learners:

– Visual (V): These learners prefer to learn through seeing information, whether that be in the form of pictures, diagrams, or other visual aids.

– Auditory (A): Auditory learners take in information best when they can hear it. They often benefit from listening to lectures or recordings, or engaging in discussions.

– Reading/Writing (R): These learners prefer to learn through reading and writing. They often take extensive notes and like to have information in a written format.

– Kinesthetic (K): Kinesthetic learners prefer to learn through hands-on experience. They often benefit from activities, experiments, or other forms of active learning.

It’s important to note that everyone has a preferred learning style, but that doesn’t mean that other styles are ineffective for them. In fact, many people learn best when they combine all three methods. However, by understanding your preferred learning style, you can tailor your education to fit your needs and maximize your learning potential.

Some people may not be aware of their learning style category, and there are online surveys that can reveal their learning style strengths. I just took one myself, and my results are as follows; Visual: 7 Aural: 9 Read/Write: 4 Kinesthetic: 9. This basically implies that I am a good listener and hands-on learner. The survey also offered me with some educational options to help me improve my knowledge.

I now know that I should avoid long lectures, try to study in short spurts and take time for breaks, make use of post-it notes, and highlight key points. I also should focus on the main ideas and make connections to better understand the material. Breaking down the information and organizing it will help me process and learn the information quicker (Dunn & Dunn, 1993).

Take notes and record are my first methods of studying in class. In class, I frequently write down anything of key interest to the lectures. It may be beneficial when I can’t remember something. Take notes might help me improve my listening and writing abilities since I have to type and listen at the same time. Because we wrote it down, it will take longer for us to memorize it since we remembered it once and then read it again when we studied it.

I also use study groups as a method to study. It is more beneficial when it comes to studying for exams or understanding assignments. In a study group, we would discuss the concepts and try to explain it to each other in our own words. This helped me understand the material better since I had to explain it in simpler terms. It also helped me catch up on anything I missed in class. Study groups are a great way to improve your communication skills and socialize with others who are in your classes.

My last method of studying is by myself at home or in the library. I usually read over my notes and try to memorize them as best as I can. I also like to make flashcards to help me remember key terms or definitions. This method is more beneficial for me when I have to memorize a lot of information for exams. It is also good for when I want to focus on one particular subject.

I think that each learning style has its own benefits and drawbacks. It is important to find the right mix of methods that work best for you. Personally, I like to use a combination of all three methods depending on the situation.

Then there’s the subject of your record; I believe it’s accurate to say that we had a discussion, but then again – maybe not. Obviously, if you’re recording in class, this takes away the advantage of being able to eavesdrop on other students’ conversations. The fact that you may listen to them at any time, even while sleeping, is another feature I appreciate about them.

There are different ways of learning and people have their own preferences on how they want to learn new information. Some people learn better by listening to audio recordings, others prefer reading texts, and others prefer seeing visuals. This is what is known as learning styles.

Different learning styles require different approaches in order for the information to be effectively absorbed. For example, someone who prefers visual learning might benefit from using things like flashcards or diagrams when trying to memorize new information. Someone who prefers auditory learning might find it helpful to listen to audio recordings or have someone read aloud to them. And someone who prefers kinesthetic learning might find it helpful to physically write out information or act out scenarios.

It’s important to note that everyone has a preference for one particular learning style, but that doesn’t mean that other styles can’t be effective. It’s also important to keep in mind that different situations might call for different learning styles. For example, you might prefer visual learning when you’re trying to memorize new vocabulary words, but auditory learning might be more effective when you’re trying to understand a new concept in math.

The most important thing is to experiment with different approaches and find what works best for you. There is no “right” way to learn, so don’t be afraid to mix things up and try something new!

Remember, there’s no such thing as a superior learning style; each has benefits and drawbacks depending on your goals. And I just gave you some pointers in my own words to assist you. You may develop your own style to make studying easier and more enjoyable by adapting what you want to learn to your learning style.

When I ask people why they chose to attend college, better career prospects is often the major reason given by more respondents. The prospects of better career opportunities also influenced my decision to attend college but for me, it was only one of several reasons. Another major reason I chose to attend college was to learn more about the real world through interactions with people from diverse cultural, economic, and social backgrounds. I have been inquisitive for as long as I remember and I not only enjoy meeting new people but also enjoy observing them and developing hypothesis as to why the world is the way it is. In addition, I read on a wide variety of subject matters in order to expand my thinking horizon. I also realize that people have different learning styles and modern education system should accommodate these distinct learning styles to enhance the overall academic experiences of the students. Fortunately, technology has also made it possible now to accommodate different learning styles inexpensively. Knowing one’s learning style is important because it helps individuals adopt more effective learning strategies in both private and professional aspects of life. This is why this paper touches upon the learning style assessments I took. Not surprisingly, the results of learning styles assessments I undertook confirm the fact that I am generally more interested in the big picture rather than every single detail and visual elements help enhance the learning process for me.

The first learning style test I took was hosted by Penn State University on its website (Penn State, 2010). The outcome of the test revealed me as a visual learner and recommended that even though I should study all course materials, I would greatly benefit from the use of charts, maps, filmstrips, notes and flashcards. The assessment test also recommends practicing visualizing words/concepts in my head to better grasp the material. This once again confirms that I enjoy observing the visual world even if I don’t directly interact with the subjects under observation. The second learning style test I took was hosted at North Carolina State University’s website (Felder & Soloman, n.d.). The test measured my learning style on 4 different scales. According to the results, I am more a reflective learner than an active learner which means I need time to reflect upon the material to better grasp it. The test also revealed I am more intuitive than sensing which means I am not strictly interested in hard facts or take systematic approach to solving problems but rather prefer abstract ideas and innovative methods of doing things. The test also confirmed the fact that I am more of a visual learner as opposed to verbal learner which means I prefer visual elements to textual elements. On the last measure involving sequential and global learners, I only slightly gravitated more towards being a global learner. In other words, I get the bigger picture often without connecting the dots and then work my way back to learn about the connections.

I am now convinced of the reliability of the two learning styles test I took because the results have been exactly what I expected. As I mentioned earlier, I enjoy talking to people, engaging in random observations, and reading on a wide range of subject matters. I believe most things are connected to others in some manner and having a knowledge on a wide range of issues helps us better understand the world. I also think I tend to prefer ideas more than minute details and grasp information quite quickly when they are presented in visual format as compared to textual format. Similarly, I prefer studying alone because it gives me opportunity to reflect upon material without unnecessary disturbance from others.

People have different learning styles and it is important to know one’s learning style to maximize learning in both private and professional aspects of life. I have always enjoyed meeting people and reading on a wide range of subject matters to broaden my thinking horizon. In addition, I also enjoy observation processes because they help me develop possible hypothesis as to why the world functions the way it does. The outcomes of my learning styles tests confirm the fact that I prefer ideas to strict details and I learn better through visual elements as compared to textual material.

Personal Learning Style

Learning Styles Essay: Introduction

Learning styles are essential variables in the learning process, and learner who knows their learning style are more successful than others because those individuals are already familiar with their learning styles and organizing their learning process accordingly. In this assignment, a summary of my learning style, according to the VARK questionnaire, has been presented. The paper also includes my preferred learning style, individual learning styles, and understanding of different learning styles, along with their interrelation and possible impacts. After all, rather than counting merely on a single learning style, a combination of different styles may lead to success in the long run.

The VARK Questionnaire

The Vark questionnaire is an essential website that provides a chance for individuals to learn their learning styles. According to my test result of the Vark questioner: “People with your preference like different formats, graphs, diagrams, maps, interesting layouts, space, listening, discussing, talking, questioning, notes, handouts, print, text, practical exercises, experiences, examples, case studies, trial and error, things that are real” (“Vark Learning,” 2020, para. 7). Moreover, my scores are the same in every category, and my learning style includes visual, aural, read/write, and kinesthetic, so one can infer that I adapt to almost all learning strategies that are proved by educators.

According to my test result, I prefer every learning style the same, but to support my learning process, I prefer to read examples, articles, and other sources on the topic. Also, I can infer that I am learning better when educator uses graphics, visual examples, and listening to the educator motives my learning process. Furthermore, the Vark questionnaire results have shown that I can be more successful if I try to improve other learning styles, such as aural and kinesthetic. The aural learning style in education demands to take summarized notes in order to create a better learning process, but I am not particularly eager to take summarized notes because I prefer taking long notes and summarized them in my mind. Also listening to educator during the lesson make my learning process more memorable than taking notes while I am listening to the educator. More specifically, seeing charts, graphics, visual examples during the lessons makes my learning process more effective than other times.

Learning Styles & Strategies

One can infer that learning styles affect the learning process during the education, and it is an essential variable to perform educational activities because every learning style demands different variable, and when educator plans educational activities, these learning styles help the learning process. Also, most of the time, educational activities can benefit the learner, but when learners perform an educational activity that is inadequate to its learning style, the educational activity can harm its learning process because learners should be motivated with such educational activities. In other words, inadequate educational activities might give those learners hard times during the activity, and the learner becomes unmotivated when they experience hard times during the educational activity. On the other hand, if an educator knows the learner's learning styles, this can be prevented because educators can plan educational activities according to the learner's learning styles, and this point of view can motivate learners to perform in the educational activities in the degree that they are studying.

Moreover, the importance of knowing learner's learning styles can lead to positive or negative outcomes in education but knowing the learner's learning styles can be ineffective if the educator does not know how to provide adequate activities to the learner, and on the contrary circumstances, learners can motive their learning process, and they may come up with good outcomes (Jackie, 2020).

Health Promotion Teaching

In health promotion teaching, it is critical to learn participants learning styles for desired outcomes. Also, in the patient teaching education, there are several strategies for a more effective learning process, and the most important perspective in these strategies is that educators should learn their patient's or family member's education level in order to reach the desired outcome. More specifically, learner's educations level affects their learning process and motivation in the learning process (Jackie, 2020). Moreover, when an educator learns their learning styles or education level, it is more likely to provide them a better learning process, and before teaching, education level is an important variable. In other words, assessing learning needs, or the gap between what patients know and need to learn is a priority.

“Asking about patients' or caregivers' level of formal education is important but may not in and of itself describe their capacity to learn new information at the point the clinician encounters them” (“Patient Education,” 2020, para. 11). One can infer that high educated learners are more close to the learning process, and other learners who have lower degrees are more open, and more motivated in the learning process. Also, the educator's teaching strategies are an important variable for learners. More specifically, educators should provide related materials to the learner in the learning process, such as using visuals, models, dolls, and realistic medical equipment in teaching (Jackie, 2020). Also, the learning environment is a critical variable because noise makes communication harder.

Furthermore, for achieving desired outcomes, educators should provide learners to use different strategies according to their learning styles, motivations in order to reach the desired outcome in the learning process. More specifically, for patient learners, it can be difficult to stay motivated in the learning process, but when educator uses all these strategies with adequate activities, learning styles will affect learners to positive behavioral change.

Learning Styles Essay: Conclusion

In conclusion, one can readily infer that learning styles are critical variables in the learning process, and learners who know their learning styles are more successful than others because those individuals are already familiar with their learning styles and organizing their learning process accordingly. In this assignment, a summary of my learning style, according to the VARK questionnaire, has been presented. The paper also presented my preferred learning style, individual learning styles, and understanding of different learning styles, along with their interrelation and possible impacts. After all, rather than counting merely on a single learning style, a combination of different styles may lead to success in the long run.

Reflection of Personal Learning Style in Psychology Essay

Introduction, opportunity for growth.

Various psychologists and educationists have developed theories to explain various styles of learning. Different learners have different styles of learning. Although learning theories give explanation to learning styles, each individual has a preference for a certain style of learning. As an adult learner, I view learning as a bridge to a better life and an easier way of doing things. I have observed a tremendous change in my learning style when I was an adolescent up to now, as an adult. I make use of the learning styles that I find more comfortable to work with.

Learning is a process through which we acquire information. Once acquired, this information is organized in such a way as to enable the learner solve their daily problems (Mackeracher, 2004, p7). As a student in business communication, I have learnt concepts of business communication. These concepts have enabled me to improve my communication skills. I prefer learning styles that relate concepts learnt in class to the actual business communication in practice. I know my objectives for learning and as such, aim at achieving these objectives through the learning process. Unlike in high school when my greatest motivators to learning were teachers, today I am more self-directed.

I am more attracted to practical concepts. Most concepts taught in the education system are far removed from reality (Knowles, Holton & Swanson, 2005, p53). I find such concepts unattractive. However, concepts that connect to reality are more appealing to me. For this reason, I like to compare concepts taught in class with what I know. When taught a new concept I take time to relate it with reality.

Concepts with logical structures are more appealing to me. When presented with a new concept I take time to find its logical structure. The intention in this case is to better understand such a concept. I am able to adequately concentrate on lecturers who use logical explanations in their lectures. On the other hand, I do not like lecturers who just mention concepts without relating them to other concepts on the subject or to reality. When presented with a new concept I take time to assimilate it and find its logical structure. Information acquired through this method is not easily forgotten. Business communication is, in fact, very logical. By undertaking certain activities in business communication, one in assured of what should follow. For example, it is logical that lack of communication channels in an organization would lead to suspicion, mistrust and lower productivity.

Group discussions have been one of my strongest learning styles at University of Riverside. Discussion groups have allowed me to discuss concepts with my co-learners. Every person has their opinions over a subject, meaning that our understanding over concepts may vary. While some people may be quick to grasp information, others take time to get the concepts. In group discussion, each person’s strength is utilized while those with difficulties are assisted. In most cases, I use discussion groups to discuss the concept discussed in lectures. I also use the discussion groups to discuss business related issues in our economy with my group members. Discussion is the most used decision making and communication style in business. To me, a discussion group offers me a feeling of what goes on in companies’ boardrooms as decisions are made.

I make use of several learning styles. However, perseverance has helped me to succeed in learning. Learning is a slow process; concepts unfold bit by bit and require patience for one to be successful. I persevere learning new concepts, do researches on various subjects and implement these concepts to solve problems.

Creativity is part of my learning style. I believe that the field of knowledge has a lot that needs to be discovered. I also believe that there are new and better ways of doing things. For these reasons, I like to be creative in my learning. I try to find new and better ways of executing concepts learnt. I also try to find new knowledge that not only adds value to business communication but also brings in better business communication strategies. Creativity gives me satisfaction as a learner. In the process of being creative, I am able to understand concepts learnt with clarity. Apart from understanding concepts, creativity helps me to connect these concepts learnt to the practical world.

Experiential and pragmatic concerts in adult learning theories are evident in my learning style (Knowles, Holton & Swanson, 2005, p47). I prefer to have a subjective experience of the concept leant. I try to relate concepts learnt to my experience or try to conceptualize an experience to the concepts. On the other hand, I prefer concepts that have a direct correlation with reality. My pragmatic approach to learning has helped me to be creative.

Although my learning styles have been effective in various ways, there are areas where I can improve. One of my areas of growth is visualizing. In most cases, I am not able to create a mental picture of the concepts. This has lowered my imagination that would have been helpful in creativity. Procrastination and poor organization skills have also hindered my learning. Sometime, I fail to balance available time to activities and end up struggling to meet deadlines. Procrastination has also led me to postpone important activities.

As a solution to my weaknesses, I plan to have a more objective approach to learning. To increase visualization, I will try to create a mental picture of every concept learnt. To increase use of imagination in creativity, I will try to imagine various situations in the future. For example, in business communication, I would try to imagine the nature of business communication, maybe in thirty years to come. To solve poor organization and procrastination, I will make use of a plan. The plan will allocate considerable time for every activity in a week. Apart from having a plan, I also intend to stick to it.

For learning to be successful, personal learning styles are necessary. Various learning styles are used by both young and adult learners. Nonetheless, each learner has learning styles that they find most appealing to him or her. To me, learning cannot be separated from reality. I try to find the connection between concepts learnt to what is observed on the outside. I use creativity to come up with new ways of doing things and make use of concepts learnt. I use group discussions to reach out to other people’s opinions and share what I have learnt. Poor visualization, procrastination and poor organization skills are my areas of growth. These areas will be improved by planning, discipline and practice.

Learning is branded as the way an individual gather and process knowledge that was taught or experienced. It is important as an individual to be aware of one’s learning style since it is what will help make learning easy. The term learning style is a combination of different strategies used to acquire and retain knowledge. An individual gains knowledge and acquire experience that helps to meet their academic goals and as an adult you are well equipped to make the most suitable career choices.

Every individual is unique in their own way, which means we learn differently. My learning styles are: visual, applied, spatial, social, and creative. As a visual learner I prefer to use diagrams, charts, and pictures to further understand. Whereas, an applied learner it’s easiest for me to work with real life objects of real situations. I am also a spatial learner which means I can use my imagination to see how something works. Additionally, I am a social learner, this means I work well with my peers, and I admire personal interaction. Finally, I am a creative learner, I use my imagination loosely to come up with all kinds of ideas. More to that, I don’t mind taking risks and, following my instincts.

I am a first-year transfer student here at St. George’s University, I am enrolled in the School of Arts and Sciences, and my area of study is Information Technology. As a social learner I paired myself with a study partner to make studying more effective. Also, I created a group chat with my classmates to be able to share our ideas, help one another, and practice together. These strategies helped me to understand my English class materials better and I was able to see good results in the end.

I learnt that Jill’s learning style is auditory. She pretty much enjoys the lectures and understands the materials when the lecturer teaches the class. However, she is having trouble with her lab assignments because the labs require reading the instructions to complete the experiments. Jill needs to adapt a new learning strategy because she is faced with characteristics of a visual learning setting. I suggest Jill starts to read and understand her material properly in which she can highlight the main ideas. Studying by herself in a quiet place can help; she will need to visualize and memorize her notes for her success in her course.

Grant has the qualities of a visual style learner because of his abilities to identify notes, key signatures, chords that is written or drawn, and reads well. He found it difficult on test that requires him to listen to music that’s played by the professor and identifying the key, and tempo. Grant needs to adapt a new learning strategy to overcome his difficulties. The best way for Grant to improve is by reading his notes out loud, practice listening tempo, and keys.

I found this exercise very beneficial. I have learnt about the different learning styles and how to come up with strategies to acquire styles I was lacking and how to apply them to improve my learning abilities. Learning is a never-ending process so always be mindful of that.

Tried it once, was ok. Scammed into 70$ charge, Apple keeps denying refund

Apps like these are predatory. They always have this free trial period and a high subscription charge if you forget to cancel. My daughter wanted to try it, so I got it.. thinking I’ll cancel it. Well I was busy in a meeting and it slipped my mind. Well, now I have a 70$ charge for literally one time use Apple support has been disappointing, because their automated systems deny refunds and customer care is of no help. If the app creators can help me refund my money, I’m happy to update the review but as of now I’m finding this ethically dubious .

Developer Response ,

I'm sorry this happened to you. We never intend to trick anyone. I wish you got the time to experience the app to see if there was value for you and your daughter. Refunds our out of my control. To my understanding Apple did eventually get you your refund.
