Tihar, Bhai Tika, Dipawali, Yamapanchak, Diwali, Laxmi puja are often used interchangeably to mean Tihar. The essence of Tihar lies in the traditional way of celebration and ancient stories that compels us to believe and continue the amazing culture of celebration. Tihar is celebrated for five days with a great significance of each day. Dipawali signifies victory of light over darkness, good over evil,  knowledge over ignorance and hope over despair.

Based on legends the festival is celebrated remembering Yamuna’s (a sister) dedication and prayer to protect her brother from the God of death, Yamaraj. To prevent Yamaraj from taking her brother’s life, she performed a five-day ritual. The very first day she worshiped crow, the messenger of Yamaraj, on the second-day “dog”, the carrier of Yamaraj. On the third day, she worshipped Goddess Laxmi for the prosperity of the family along with cow as a representation of Goddess. The next day she prepared a large variety of dishes to offer to Yamaraj as a symbol of appreciation Govardhana puja which is also known as Annakut (Mountain of food). And the final day is Bhai Tika, Yamuna worshipped and fasted for her brother.

She prepared garland of Glove Amaranth flower (commonly known as Makhamali phool and Supari phool), A flower that never wears out, along with oil, Dubo (evergreen perennial green grass), Walnut Tika for the protection and most importantly Saptarangi Tika (Pigments of 7 different colors). She Broke Walnut before the ritual to constrict external bodies and bad omen from entering the house. She performed and created the ritual with much dedication and asked Yamaraj not to take her brother’s life until the garland of Makhamali wears out. By her efforts, Yamaraj was so impressed that he let her brother live a peaceful life. She set an example of true love. and the same tradition continues even today.

Diwali in Nepal - Celebration of the Gods, Mother Nature and Oneself

Diwali in Nepal better known as Tihar is the 2nd most celebrated festival in Nepal after Dashain (Dussehra). In this festival, people not only celebrate the Gods but the animals and birds which share a close relationship with them. It is known by different names at different places but the soul of the festival remains the same.

Diwali in Nepal Dates 2023

In Nepal, Diwali is celebrated on the night of the New moon in the month of Kartik according to the Hindu calendar. The entire festival stretches from two days prior to Tihar till two days post-Tihar, making it a five-day grand celebration. The whole country observes a long week holiday during this festival. As per the English calendar, Tihar is observed in the month of late October to starting of the November month.

This year in 2023, Diwali in Nepal will be celebrated on  12 November

How is Tihar Celebrated?

Diwali in Nepal, also called ‘Deepawali’ is more commonly known as ‘Tihar’ among the locals. There are various other names like ‘Yamapanchak’ or ‘Swanti’. ‘Yamapanchak’ translates to the five days of Lord Yama, the God of Death. During this period, people pray to Lord Yama to appease him so that he may judge their virtues and vices fairly after their demise and leads their souls to heaven.

The Nepalese people not only praise Gods and Deities like Shri Laxmi, Lord Yama, Govardhan Mountain, etc. but also honour and worship animals like crows, dogs, cows and oxen with the belief that it will bring happiness, success and good fortune in their lives. These animals are considered as divine gifts from mother nature by the people, and the relationship that they share with them is considered sacred.

The celebration starts almost a month ago when people start cleaning their homes, discarding all the unwanted and broken things and purchasing new clothes. Every family purchases items like clay lamps, rangoli colours and electric lights to decorate their houses with. Also, a variety of delicious snacks and sweets for the occasion.

Diwali in Nepal is celebrated in the whole of Nepal by the Hindus and Buddhists. However, few of the ceremonies that are of the Hindu mythological origin are omitted by the Buddhist people.

Legends of Tihar - Nepal Diwali

There are many tales about the origins of Tihar. The most popular of them all is the story of Lord Yama, the God of Death and his sister the Yamuna.

Lord Yama, the Hindu god of death, is believed to be the one who judges the souls of people after their death. He is the one who decides whether to send their souls to hell or heaven. Once, he was supposed to meet his sister, Yamuna. But he was unable to as he was busy with his work. On the other hand, Yamuna was eagerly waiting to meet her brother. So she sent messages to him, inviting him to come and meet her. As the legend goes, she sent a crow, a dog and then a cow as the messenger. But even then, Lord Yama did not come to see her. Finally, she had decided to go to herself and meet him. This day is observed as the day of Bhai ‘Tika’, the 5th day of Tihar. On this day, it is said that the Yamuna worshipped her brother and blessed him with good fortune. Hence, following the footsteps of Yamuna, the tradition of sisters paying respect to their brothers and praying for their well being was set.

Another story, telling the origins of the Govardhan Puja observed on the 4th Day of Tihar is about Lord Krishna. It is the story of when Gokul village was under the threat of flood and heavy rainfall after being cursed upon by Lord Indra, the God of Rain. To protect the people of his town, Krishna lifted the massive Govardhan Mountain on his tiny little finger and gave shelter to his town’s people and animals. As Govardhan Mountain saved the lives of people of Gokul, they offered a variety of food items to Govardhan Mountain and worshipped him for becoming their saviour.

The Five Day Celebration of Diwali in Nepal

Day 1: kag tihar – worshipping the crow.

Crows being fed with sweets, Diwali in Nepal

Day 2: Kukur Tihar  – Worshipping the Dog

Day 3: gai tihar – worshipping the cow.

‘Gai’ or Cow is known as the symbol of prosperity. On the 3rd day of Tihar, Cows are worshipped and praised by putting a ‘tika’ on their forehead and a garland of marigold around their neck. The evening is when Diwali is celebrated. People worship Goddess Laxmi and welcome her by lighting oil lamps and lanterns all around the house. Colourful ‘Rangolis’ (freehand designs) are painted on the floor using sand colours, multi-coloured grains and flowers. People often paint red coloured footsteps on their home entrance. These footsteps represent the coming of Goddess Laxmi, who brings wealth and prosperity. On this occasion, groups of small children and young girls visit every house in their neighbourhood and dance and sing Tihar songs like Bhailo and Deusi and ask for tips like money, fruits or sweets. Younger ones seek blessings from the elders of the family.

Day 4: Goru Tihar – Worshipping the Trio - The Ox, Govardhan Mountain and Oneself

Day 4 observes three different worshippings or ‘Pujas’ throughout the day. Just as the crows, dogs and cows are worshipped, people on the 4th Day worship oxen which have proved to be a farmer’s best friend in this agricultural land of Nepal. Some Hindus worship the Govardhan Mountain by structuring a representative small mountain idol made of cow dung. This symbolizes the victory of Lord Krishna over Lord Indra. Hundreds of food items, known as ‘Annakut’ are offered to this deity. This day is marked as the new year of the Newar community and the beginning of the new ‘Nepal Sambat’ or the Nepali calendar.

In the evening, every home of Newari community performs the ‘Maha Puja’ which is aimed at worshipping self to purify one’s soul. The elder father of the family draws the traditional auspicious geometric designs and performs puja under the ‘Mandap’ decorated with marigold. The females of the house prepare a grand feast, known as ‘Shagun’. People enjoy various delicacies like fried eggs, fish, meat, sweet dishes, pastries and much more.

Day 5: Bhai Tika – Celebrating the Love of Brothers and Sisters in Nepal

Bhai Tika, Diwali in Nepal

For the protection of brothers from all evil and to pray for their long lives, Bhai Tika is celebrated. ‘Bhai’ in Nepal means brother. The sisters recite auspicious ‘mantras’ (chants), put a ‘tika’ (red colour mark) on their brother’s forehead and also exchange gifts with them. This day is celebrated in the glory of ‘Yamuna’, the sister of Lord Yama.

During this entire festival, every member of each household are involved in the preparations. Females and young girls of the house prepare various desserts and snacks and decorate the house with rangoli designs and lamps. The older men close their old accounts and start new ones for the new financial year. Gold or silver jewellery is gifted on the eve of Tihar to the beautiful wives by their husbands. Children take joy in bursting crackers. People wear new clothes, eat sweet delicacies like Rasbari, Anarasa, Gulab jamun and Kalakand and exchange gifts and greet each other with lots of good wishes.

Essay on Diwali (Tihar) Festivals for students|500+ Words

Content Writer | Updated: March 3, 2024 18:18 NST

Deepawali or Tihar is the second greatest Hindu festival after Dashain which is celebrated for five days in either Kartik or Mangsir( November). It is a festival of lights, flowers, sweets, and kites. During festivals, birds and animals are worshipped.

Deepawali is observed for five days which is also called Yama Panchak. According to the mythology, it is celebrated especially by the sister in memory of the Yamuna and her brother Yamraj or Yama, the God of death. The first day is observed as Kag Tihar (Crow Festivals) on which day the crow is worshipped and given food on a leaf plate in the early morning. It is believed that the crow is the messenger of both good and bad news. The second day is Kukur Tihar (Dog Festivals) on which day dog is worshipped, put garlands around their necks, and offered various food which is considered the gatekeeper of Yama.

Goddess Laxmi is worshipped on the third day, i.e. Laxmi Pooja as the goddess of wealth. On the same day, the cow is worshipped as an incarnation of Laxmi. People started lighting candles or oil-lit clay lamps called palas in the different parts and corners of their houses from this day. The fourth day is Goru Tihar, the day of the oxen that are used widely to plow the fields in Nepal. People apply oil on its horns, worship it, and give delicious food including Sel roti. It is also called Govardhan Puja day and the mountain of cow dung is worshipped.

The fifth day and the most important day is Bhai Tika. on this day, sister worships their brother and put a seven-color special tika on their forehead and a Makhmali garland around the neck. They wish their brother good health and long life and offer delicious food and dry fruits. In return, the Brothers offer Tika, gifts, money, and clothes to their sisters.

Tihar helps us to strengthen the relationship between brother and sister. People also participate in Deusi and Bhailo which gives them full entertainment and helps to meet each other. Children enjoy eating delicious food and bread which is cooked in every house.

Although Tihar helps to enhance our relationship, some people misuse it. Especially children and youths make fireworks which may lead to serious accidents. While Performing Bhailo people demand high money which is also one of the bad aspects of Tihar. Drinking, gambling, extravagance, and over-eating are some evil aspects of the festivals. we should try to avoid them and make the Tihar a purely decent and joyous festival.

Essay About Dashain Festival

essay on Dashain

Dashain festival is one of the greatest festivals in Nepal. It is celebrated with great joy and jubilation. Dashain is celebrated by the Hindu followers all over Nepal. It is the festival that brings happiness and delivers the message of unity among people. This festival signifies unity, the victory of truth, and the inception of happiness.

Dashain generally falls in Nepali Month Aswin( September ) lasts for 10 days. Each day has special rituals and activities to be performed. The festival starts from Ghatasthapana and ends at Vijaya Dashami. On Ghatasthapana, people sow rice and barley seeds on the pious corner of their house to grow seedlings called Jamara.

Jamara

The first nine days of the festival are popularly called Navaratri. The goddess Durga is worshipped during this period. The 7th day is known as Fulpati and on this day Jamara is brought to the Hanuman Dhoka, Kathmandu from the Gorkha Durbar with the help of the priest. From Fulpati (8th day) until the 9th day, people sacrifice goats, ducks, buffaloes, and other birds & animals to the Goddess Durga. They worship the image of the Goddess Durga, some even visit temples. They do so wishing her blessing for power and prosperity. The main day of the Tika ie. the 10th day is called Vijaya Dashami.

On this day, people receive Tika( red-colored rice seeds ) on their forehead, Jamara on their head along with the blessings of the elder ones. They get blessings for good health, happiness, progress, prosperity, and longevity. People wear new clothes, visit relatives and enjoy delicious food items .

Dashain festival marks the victory of truth over untruth. With regard to this, Hindu scripture defines the two events as the starting of the celebration of the festival. The first one is when the cruel demon, Mahisasur was killed by the Goddess Durga. After this victory, the Dashain festival is believed to be started. Another one is when Ramchandra and Sita returned to Ayodhya after killing the evil Ravan who had kidnapped Sita. The celebration of Dashain has social and religious importance. It is an occasion of peace and goodwill.

📌 Another Essay – Essay on Importance of English Language

It is the festival in which family members gather and enjoy together. They forget their worries and indulge themselves in feasting and joy. Schools, offices, organizations, etc. remain closed during the time and people far away return back home for the festive celebration with their kith and kins. Despite this, Dashain has a dark side too. Numerous birds, animals are killed mercilessly. People engage themselves in taking drinks, different beverages, gambling, and so on. Some people even celebrate in an expensive and pompous style being in prolonged debt. Indeed, celebrating festivals like Dashain gives us complete joy and spreads a true message of brotherhood.

Title: Diwali – The Festival of Lights and Spiritual Significance

Introduction

Diwali, also known as Deepavali, is one of the most prominent and widely celebrated festivals in India. It holds immense cultural, religious, and social significance for people of the Hindu faith. The festival spans over five days and signifies the victory of light over darkness and good over evil. This essay explores the various aspects of Diwali, including its historical, religious, and social significance.

Historical and Religious Significance

Diwali finds its roots in ancient Indian mythology and legends. The most well-known story associated with Diwali is the return of Lord Rama, along with his wife Sita and brother Lakshmana, to the kingdom of Ayodhya after 14 years of exile. Their return symbolizes the triumph of righteousness over evil. Lord Rama’s victory over the demon king Ravana is celebrated with great fervor during Diwali.

The lighting of lamps and bursting of fireworks during Diwali signify the removal of darkness and the spreading of light and positivity. The tradition of lighting Diyas (earthen lamps) and illuminating homes and streets represents the victory of good over evil and the triumph of knowledge over ignorance. It is believed that these lights guide Goddess Lakshmi, the deity of wealth and prosperity, into people’s homes.

Social Significance

Diwali is not only a religious festival but also a time for social bonding, family gatherings, and community celebrations. Families come together to clean and decorate their homes, exchange gifts, and share festive meals. The festival brings people from diverse backgrounds together, fostering unity, love, and harmony.

During Diwali, people visit their relatives and friends, exchanging sweets, dry fruits, and gifts as a token of love and affection. It is also a time to forgive past grievances and mend broken relationships, as the festival promotes the spirit of forgiveness, reconciliation, and compassion.

Cultural Celebrations

Diwali celebrations go beyond religious rituals. The festival is marked by colorful rangoli designs, vibrant decorations, and intricate patterns created with colored powders, flowers, and Diyas. Fireworks light up the night sky, filling the air with joy and excitement.

The festival also showcases the rich cultural heritage of India. Traditional dances, music, and performances are organized to entertain and engage the community. Diwali melas (fairs) are held, featuring various cultural activities, folk dances, and food stalls. These events provide an opportunity for people to come together, celebrate, and appreciate the diverse cultural tapestry of India.

Environmental Concerns

While Diwali is a time of celebration and joy, it is essential to address the environmental concerns associated with the festival. The excessive use of firecrackers contributes to air and noise pollution, which poses health hazards and disturbs the ecosystem. It is crucial for individuals and communities to adopt eco-friendly practices, such as minimizing the use of fireworks and opting for environmentally friendly alternatives like decorative lights and lamps.

Diwali, the festival of lights, holds immense cultural, religious, and social significance in India. It is a time of joy, togetherness, and the triumph of good over evil. Diwali celebrations embody the values of unity, love, forgiveness, and the spirit of giving. However, it is equally important to celebrate the festival in an environmentally responsible manner. By embracing eco-friendly practices, we can ensure that the essence of Diwali, as a festival of light and hope, is preserved for future generations to enjoy.

Title: Diwali – A Celebration of Light, Joy, and Cultural Significance

Introduction:

Diwali, also known as Deepavali, is one of the most widely celebrated festivals in India and holds immense cultural, religious, and social significance. The festival stretches over five days, and each day has its own significance and rituals. Diwali is a time of vibrant celebrations, where people come together to illuminate their homes with lamps, exchange gifts, indulge in delicious sweets, and participate in various cultural activities. This essay explores the historical origins, religious significance, cultural traditions, social impact, and environmental considerations associated with Diwali.

I. Historical Origins of Diwali

The roots of Diwali can be traced back to ancient Indian mythology and various historical events. One of the most popular legends associated with Diwali is the story of Lord Rama’s return to Ayodhya after defeating the demon king Ravana. The people of Ayodhya celebrated Rama’s homecoming after 14 years of exile by lighting lamps, signifying the triumph of good over evil. Diwali also commemorates the victory of Lord Krishna over the demon Narakasura, symbolizing the triumph of righteousness and the eradication of darkness.

II. Religious Significance of Diwali

Diwali holds deep religious significance for Hindus, Jains, and Sikhs. For Hindus, it is a time to worship Goddess Lakshmi, the deity of wealth and prosperity. Devotees clean their homes and create intricate rangoli designs to invite the goddess into their households. Diwali is also associated with the worship of Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles, and the offering of prayers to seek divine blessings.

In Jainism, Diwali marks the spiritual enlightenment and liberation of Lord Mahavira, the 24th and last Tirthankara. Jains celebrate Diwali by offering prayers, visiting temples, and engaging in acts of charity and compassion.

For Sikhs, Diwali holds historical significance as it commemorates the release of Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji, the sixth Sikh Guru, and 52 other kings from imprisonment in the Gwalior Fort. This event represents the victory of truth and freedom.

III. Cultural Traditions and Celebrations

Diwali is not only a religious festival but also a time for cultural celebrations and festivities. The preparations for Diwali begin weeks in advance, as people clean their homes and decorate them with colorful rangoli designs, bright lights, and flowers. The lighting of diyas (earthen lamps) and candles is a significant aspect of Diwali, symbolizing the triumph of light over darkness.

During Diwali, families come together to perform puja (worship) rituals, exchange gifts, and share special meals. Traditional sweets and snacks, such as ladoos and gujiyas, are prepared and distributed among relatives, friends, and neighbors. The exchange of gifts signifies love, respect, and the strengthening of relationships.

Cultural performances, such as traditional dances like Garba and Bharatanatyam, music concerts, and plays, are organized during Diwali. These cultural activities showcase the rich heritage of Indian art and provide a platform for artists to display their talent.

IV. Social Impact and Community Bonding

Diwali serves as a unifying force, bringing people from different communities, religions, and backgrounds together. It is a time when families and friends come together to celebrate and bond. Diwali encourages individuals to visit their loved ones, exchange greetings, and share the joy of the festival.

The spirit of giving and sharing is strongly emphasized during Diwali. Many people extend acts of kindness by donating to charities, distributing food to the underprivileged, and supporting those in need. This collective effort to help others promotes empathy, compassion, and social cohesion.

Diwali also fosters a sense of unity and harmony among communities. People of different religions and cultures join in the celebrations, participating in events and exchanging cultural experiences. The festival acts as a platform for cultural exchange, fostering understanding and appreciation for diversity.

V. Environmental Considerations

In recent years, there has been growing concern about the environmental impact of Diwali celebrations. The excessive use of firecrackers during Diwali contributes to air and noise pollution, causing harm to human health and the environment. Additionally, the disposal of firework waste poses a significant challenge.

To address these concerns, there has been a shift towards eco-friendly Diwali celebrations. Many individuals and communities now opt for alternative ways to celebrate, such as using decorative lights, eco-friendly fireworks, and organic materials for rangoli designs. Awareness campaigns promote the use of environmentally friendly practices, encouraging people to celebrate Diwali in a responsible manner.

Conclusion:

Diwali is a festival that encapsulates the essence of Indian culture, spirituality, and social values. It is a time when people come together to celebrate light, joy, and prosperity. Diwali’s historical origins, religious significance, cultural traditions, and social impact make it an integral part of Indian society.

As we celebrate Diwali, it is crucial to remain mindful of the environmental impact and embrace sustainable practices. By promoting eco-friendly celebrations and minimizing pollution, we can ensure that the essence of Diwali, as a festival of light and togetherness, is preserved for future generations to enjoy. Diwali serves as a reminder of the triumph of good over evil, the importance of unity, and the power of love and compassion in our lives.

(Celebrations celebrated with Deepawali)

This brought our country so much respect that we even enjoy it for granted to date.

Although our country’s history, culture, terrains, and achievements make anyone feel proud, the power struggle for the politicians, previous kings, and presidents have made the country weak and fall in the developing country category. Our rich natural resources have not been utilized and we have fallen way behind. Corruption is widely prevalent in our country and the loans we have taken from other countries are in a large number. The amount of food and other materialistic consumption has made Nepal import more and export less.

Our country is poor but the people here are rich. This is because of the corruption and the illegal working/trading that has been done. The government has not made significant progress and the people aren’t responsible. Although I feel proud to be A Nepali, the condition of my country makes me feel bad. People should feel responsible and carry out their duties and not just complain about the government.

The government too should implement proper policies and rules and enforce them accordingly. Utilization of our natural resources should be done in an effective way and social evils such as discrimination according to castes and genders, other superstitions should be slowly removed. Centralized development should stop and we should control the people moving out to other countries with their skills that are wasted abroad. This way we can slowly develop our country.
