Teaching about Recycling in the Classroom

I love teaching young people about recycling. It is a simple action that students of every age can take to help people, animals, and the environment. And even though recycling is far from being a panacea for all our environmental problems, it is an excellent way to teach students to be conscious about where the materials they use come from and where they end up when they are disposed of.

Teach About the Benefits of Recycling

Whenever I try to promote a certain behavior, I start by explaining why it is important. I tell students how recycling prevents items from going to landfills, reduces our use of natural resources, and reduces pollution during the process of extracting and creating new materials.

For younger students, I often focus on recycling paper because students use a lot of it in elementary school. I explain how paper comes from cutting down trees and that when they recycle paper, it is turned into new paper. This means that fewer trees are cut down to make new paper. Then I will read the book The Great Kapok Tree , by Lynne Cherry, which explains how people and animals both benefit from trees and why we should protect them. For middle school students, HEART’s Justice for All resource guide has a lesson about trees titled “Tree Protectors” that can be used instead.

How Recycling Works

I have found that students are often curious about how recycling works. As educators, we can use that curiosity to craft engaging lessons that provide real-world connections to STEM. I like to use videos to teach this information, and luckily, there are plenty of free videos online about how recycling works ( this is my favorite). Before showing students a video on this topic, I explain that tons of paper, plastic, metal, and glass need to be separated at the “materials recycling facilities.” Then I ask students to brainstorm how the facilities might quickly separate these materials. Sometimes I give them some clues. For example, I will ask if there is something they are familiar with that would quickly pull out any metals from the recycling (i.e. a magnet). After they discuss the topic, we watch the video and find out how MRFs actually do it.

Recycling can also be connected to a lesson on the three states of matter (i.e., solid, liquid, and gas). Items such as metal, glass, and plastic are melted during the recycling process. For example, when a plastic water bottle is recycled, it is changed from a solid to a liquid and then back to a solid. When workers recycle plastic, they need to be careful not to get the plastic too hot because it will turn into a gas, which they cannot use. There is even a children’s book titled The Adventures of a Plastic Bottle , by Alison Inches, that explains the process.

Explain What Can and Cannot be Recycled

Knowing what you can and cannot recycle is often confusing. The rules differ depending on where you live and they can often change. One tool that can be helpful is the website Recycle By City , which lists the items that can be recycled in several large cities in the United States. If your city is not included on this website, this information is often on your local government’s website.

Once you know what you can and cannot recycle in your area, you can share this information with your students. There are a couple of ways that I like to teach this information. For primary-aged students, I explain how they can recycle disposable metal, glass, plastic, and paper. I bring in examples of each type of item from these four categories and discuss how they are similar and different. For example, I explain how both plastic and glass are often clear, but glass is hard and plastic is usually more flexible.

For older students, I play a game where they get in small groups or pairs. Then I give each group pictures of different items, and they have to guess whether the item can be recycled. After they categorize all the items as “can recycle” or “cannot recycle,” I explain the answers. Another way I teach this information is by playing a relay race. I print and laminate photos of things that they can and cannot recycle. Then I have the students line up in two groups on one side, and I put the photos on the other side. One at a time, a student from each team runs to find a photo of one thing they can recycle and then runs back.

After teaching this information, I have the students make posters for their classroom or home that show what they can and cannot recycle. This helps students apply what they learned and provides a helpful tool to remind them what they can put in the recycling bin.

Make Recycling Accessible for Everyone

One more important message that I teach students about recycling is that we need to make it more accessible. To teach this message, I explain to students that I have a list of the top five reasons why people do not recycle, but before I show it to them, I ask them to turn to their neighbors and guess what they are. After they discuss this question and share with the group, I show them this graph . Students are often surprised to find out that the main reasons people do not recycle are not because they “don’t care” or “are lazy”, but because they do not have access to recycling or because they have to pay money to recycle. Then we will discuss ways we change these systems so that recycling is free and accessible for everyone.

I teach kids about recycling using a game called “Recycling Relay Race” We set an organics bin, blue bin (containers), grey bin (paper) and a garbage can. The class is divided into 2 teams, each person is given an item that may or not be recyclable, the 2 teams race against each other to decide where the items is properly disposed of. Then they race back to the beginning. Once everyone has had at least 2 turns we go through the bins and discuss with the students some of the items where put in the wrong bin and discuss where they should have gone.

Recycling includes the procedure of collecting waste materials and breaking them down into building blocks that can be turned into new products. There are mainly five kinds of waste materials. These include paper, steel, glass, aluminum and plastic. All these are recycled using different methodologies.

The Procedure of Recycling

Here is how different things are recycled and made to be used again:

Paper – Paper waste contains paper sheets, newspapers, cardboards and other printed papers used in offices, educational institutes etc. Paper is made of 2 components – wood & water. So through recycling, the paper is first broken down into these 2 component parts to reform it. The contamination like ink and dirt is filtered out. Paper is compiled and is given a hot water bath. This bath quickly breaks the paper down into tiny strands of cellulose fiber, giving a mushy substance called ‘PULP’ – basically wet lumpy paper. The paper is still dirty though. Further, it is forced into a screen where remaining dirt is taken out like glue or plastic particles. Then it is sent to D-inker where another bath is given which contains air bubbles and soap like chemical called ‘Surfactant’ that separates the paper from the ink. Air bubbles carry the ink up to the surface and pulp which sinks to the bottom. That pulp is now clean and can be formed into new paper products.

Steel – Steel can be recycled over and over again without losing any of its properties. With the help of the liquid floating system, high air-pressure system, steel is separated from other metal and then it is cut down further by Hydraulic machinery by exerting enormous pressure. Sometimes gas and plasma arch are used too. Steel is then melted down and shaped into new items like – cans, utensils, car parts, paper clips etc.

Glass – Glass is shattered and broken down into tiny pieces called ‘Cullet’ which are no longer than 5 cm wide. Glass pieces are sorted into colored, clear, brown and green color. Differentiating colors is important as it is permanent. Glass is made of Silica, which is melted down and molded into new shapes and products.

Aluminum – Similar to steel, once it is separated there is nothing much to do with it when it comes to making aluminum re-usable. It’s shredded, washed and turned into chips, which are melted in a large furnace and then poured into molds. Then they are shipped to manufacturers where they are melted again and rolled into thin sheets that can be cut, bent and shaped into new products.

Plastic – Plastic is made of one of 6 different types of chemicals – Polyethylene terephthalate, high-density polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, low-density polyethylene, polypropylene and polystyrene. Each plastic has a different molecular structure which determines the physical properties of the plastic, which means some plastic is easier to recycle than the others. Plastic is made of large carbon chains so some of the forms of plastic can be melted down and reformed while others can be mixed with new plastic and yet others can only be molded into other shapes for different uses.

Numerous items, like plastic bags and food wrappers, don’t last long, but they linger in the environment for hundreds of years. When plastic waste ends up on land, it forms landfills, and when we burn it, it causes air pollution and leads to lung-related health problems.

Almost anything can be recycled and waste can be given new shape for re-usage but still there are some items and materials like computers, batteries, light bulb etc which are complex to recycle as they largely contain toxins. Hence, we must dispose of them responsibly.

Paper, aluminum cans, and plastic bottles are all items that students can see being recycled every day. But what about items like broken crayons, batteries, or old electronics? Start by dividing the class into several small groups and assign each of them a list of items that are more challenging to recycle. Then have them research to learn how those items can be recycled. 13. Play bingo and learn as you go

15. Create a prize bag of upcycled items

Get your students’ parents involved by asking for items to use for the classroom prize bag. Give them suggestions—toys from restaurant kids’ meals, little freebies from conferences, and other odds and ends—and you’ll be surprised at the items you can collect. Students will love picking a prize from the “reuse” bag when they hit different milestones and goals.

16. Upcycle plastic containers

You can find oodles of plastic containers around the house that make for organizers and more. Challenge your students to look around their homes or in their recycling bins to find something that can be upcycled or reused. For instance, a yogurt container can be used as a planter or crayon holder, a plastic bottle can be quickly transformed into a vase, and baby wipe containers can hold just about any classroom odds and ends.

Recycling is the process of converting waste materials into new materials and objects. The recovery of energy from waste materials is often included in this concept.

Recycling has been a common practice for most of human history, with recorded advocates as far back as Plato in the fourth century BC. In pre-industrial times, there is evidence of scrap bronze and other metals being collected in Europe and melted down for continuous reuse. Paper recycling was first recorded in 1031 when Japanese shops sold repulped paper. In Britain dust and ash from wood and coal fires was collected by "dustmen" and downcycled as a base material for brick making.

All recyclables will fall into 3 main types of recycling: primary, secondary and tertiary. Harvard’s Taylor Swift Scholars Have Thoughts on ‘Tortured Poets’

Fans of Taylor Swift often study up for a new album, revisiting the singer’s older works to prepare to analyze lyrics and song titles for secret messages and meanings .

“The Tortured Poets Department” is getting much the same treatment, and perhaps no group of listeners was better prepared than the students at Harvard University currently studying Ms. Swift’s works in an English class devoted entirely to the artist . The undergraduate course, “Taylor Swift and Her World,” is taught by Stephanie Burt, who has her students comparing Ms. Swift’s songs to works by poets and writers including Willa Cather, Samuel Taylor Coleridge and William Wordsworth.

On Thursday night, about 50 students from the class gathered in a lecture hall on campus to listen to Ms. Swift’s new album. Mary Pankowski, a 22-year-old senior studying history of art and architecture, wore a cream sweatshirt she bought at Ms. Swift’s Eras tour last year. The group made beaded friendship bracelets to celebrate the new album, she said.

When the clock struck midnight, the classroom erupted into applause, and the analysis began. First, the group listened through the album once without discussing, just taking it all in.

Certain lines, however, immediately caused a stir, said Samantha Wilhoit, a junior studying government — like a reference to the singer Charlie Puth and the scathing lyrics to the song “The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived,” Ms. Wilhoit, 21, said.

A line from the song “I Can Do It With a Broken Heart,” in which Ms. Swift sings, “I cry a lot but I am so productive,” also seemed to resonate, Ms. Wilhoit said, laughing.

A smaller group of students, including Ms. Pankowski, stuck it out until the early hours of the morning waiting to see if Ms. Swift would drop additional music. At 2 a.m., they were rewarded with an additional “volume” of 15 tracks called “The Anthology.” Ms. Pankowski said she didn’t go to sleep until hours later.

Speaking with The New York Times together on a video call Friday morning, several students from the class discussed their thoughts on the 31 new songs and brainstormed their final papers, which are due at the end of the month.

“The song ‘Clara Bow’ reminded me of ‘The Song of the Lark,’” Makenna Walko, 19, said, citing the Willa Cather novel that follows the career of an aspiring opera singer, Thea Kronborg. “She’s talking about a girl trying to make it out of her small town and trying to get to Manhattan, and what it’s like to have these big, musical dreams and try to pursue them,” she continued. “That’s a narrative that has shown up a lot in Taylor’s own life, over the course of her own career. In a lot of ways, it’s Taylor’s story, too.”

Lola DeAscentiis, a sophomore, zeroed in on the song “But Daddy I Love Him,” comparing it to the Sylvia Plath poem “Daddy.” She plans to explore the link in her final paper.

“I hesitate to say that the song was anywhere near the genius of Sylvia Plath — no offense to Taylor Swift — but I can definitely see some similarities in the themes, like sadness, depression and mental health,” Ms. DeAscentiis, 20, said. (Ms. DeAscentiis also drew a distinction between being a fan of Ms. Swift and being a devoted Swiftie. She said she identified as the former.)

“The way that Taylor overlays her relationship with the significant other that she’s talking about in the song with the relationship that she has with her father — I think that was very Plath,” she added.

Another student, Ana Paulina Serrano, echoed Ms. DeAscentiis, noting that the class had learned about the genre of confessional poetry. “Is Taylor considered a confessional poet?” Ms. Serrano, a 21-year-old junior majoring in neuroscience, asked the group on the call. In support of her own position, she offered as evidence Ms. Swift’s song “Mastermind,” a track off “Midnights,” in which Ms. Swift reveals herself to have calculated and plotted the outcome of a relationship.

“Sometimes she’s confessing things that we, like, already knew or assumed, but she often seems to feel this need to explicitly tell us,” Ms. Serrano added.

Isabel Levin, a 23-year-old senior studying integrative biology, said she thought Ms. Swift’s delivery on several tracks had a spoken-word quality. She wondered if maybe some of the lyrics had initially begun not as songs but as more traditional poems.

Ms. Swift has said she categorizes her songs by the type of pen she imagines using to write each. A “frivolous, carefree, bouncy” song is a glitter gel pen song, while a fountain pen song might be more “brutally honest,” according to Ms. Swift . Quill pen songs are “all old-fashioned, like you’re a 19th-century poet crafting your next sonnet by candlelight,” she explained during her acceptance speech as songwriter-artist of the decade at the Nashville Songwriter Awards in 2022.
