World Family Day

Why World Family Day is Celebrated ?

To remind and recognize the importance of a family, general assembly of United Nations proposed to celebrate international/world family day on every 15 of May, this decision was taken in 1993 and from 1994 to onwards, this day is celebrated all over the world. Every year the general secretary United Nations suggests a specific motto in the relevance of that day. For example, this year 2015, the phrase set was “Men in charge? Gender equality and children’s rights in contemporary families”, so all the meetings, conferences and programs held on 15 May 2015 covered the discussions on the mentioned phrase. This motto was about the male dominance in a family, male and female equality and protection of children rights in a family relationship.

Purpose of Celebration

The main purpose to celebrate this day is to raise awareness of individual rights in a family, creation of friendly environment among the parents and children, and to recognize the importance of a prosperous family relationship.

It is the need to time to develop awareness of a complete family, because there are many children, boys and girls who are the victims of broken family relationships and as a result they have involved in unlawful activities and destroying their lives in doing criminal activities. People need to understand that separation and anger is not the solution of problem, patience, love, care and discussion is the solution of problem.

Our families today are rich and varied. No longer do we think of the traditional illustration of a family — a mother, father and their children. Instead, families can be led by single parents, same-sex couples, work families and friends — essentially, any community of people who love and support each other.

What does Family Day really mean? Back to video

Often, more than one generation lives together. This trend is on the rise. According to a Pew Research Center report, “In 2014, a record 60.6 million people, or 19 per cent of the U.S. population, lived with multiple generations under one roof.”

However we define our own families, ideally, they’re there for us throughout good times and bad. For example, when a baby is born or adopted, the family typically comes together to celebrate new life and offer help with the growing family. Family is also there when times are tough, such as job losses, divorces or deaths.

Essential reading for hockey fans who eat, sleep, Canucks, repeat.

How close do we really feel to our families today?

According to the 2013 General Social Survey, in Canada, more than 55 per cent of people older than 15 reported they felt close to at least five members of their respective families. Another 23 per cent felt close to three or four relatives, while 17 per cent  felt connected to only one or two relatives. Four per cent of those surveyed reported having no close relatives.

Canadians living alone reported fewer close family connections than those living with their immediate families. Thirty-one per cent of Canadians living alone reported having fewer than three close family members.

When it comes to overall health and well-being, strong family bonds are just as important as good nutrition, exercise and proper rest. In fact, research has shown that people who feel a deep sense of connection, and have fulfilling connections with others, tend to live longer, healthier lives.

In comparison, when people lack the important bond of human connection, they stand a greater risk for depression, addiction, cognitive issues and shorter lifespans. In fact, one study from the University of Chicago found when individuals suffered from extreme loneliness (as often happens when people live devoid of family ties), their chances of premature death increased by 14 per cent.

Experts agree that family support is invaluable when a member is in crisis, even when the affected family member is unable or not ready to seek help. For instance, when a person is feeling depressed, talking with other family members who express concern and demonstrate compassion can assist that individual in finding the information and support he or she needs — which improves the person’s chance for success.

Every person’s family history and circumstances are unique, but regardless of where you’re at today, there are steps you can take to create and maintain these all-important family ties by:

  • Practising gratitude. Being grateful and showing appreciation for the people in our lives can play an important role in nurturing healthy family relationships. Recognizing the ways family members have been there for us, rather than focusing on past disappointments and challenges, can help us cultivate deeper feelings of appreciation and love.
  • Being the love and support we hope to receive. Even when times are difficult, when we offer unconditional love to those around us, we strengthen ties that can help us receive more love and nurturing over time.
  • Creating a safe climate of honest communication.                                       Speaking truthfully with compassion opens the channels of clear communication amongst family members. Being a good listener and allowing others the chance to speak their minds uninterrupted can help you become aware of different points of view, and understand when to offer advice to help create an atmosphere of mutual love and respect.
  • Being trustworthy.                                                                                                       Being a person who keeps confidences and follows through with commitments models good behaviour among family members and creates a family culture based on trust. Viewing one another as supportive allies that we can turn to in times of need ensures family bonds are kept strong.
  • Recognizing and honouring boundaries. Respecting an individual’s need for privacy and space allows us to feel safe with one another.
  • Practising patience. Trusting that relationships unfold in their own time with no need to force preconceived outcomes allows us the freedom to be ourselves.
  • Practising forgiveness.                                                                                               Families are communities of people, and people often make mistakes. Therefore, forgiving those family members who have caused us pain, while also being willing to take responsibility for anything we have personally done, enables us to feel safe in our relationships and trust they will continue to grow and flourish.

Family Day is a wonderful opportunity to spend time with the important individuals in our lives whom we consider family. As suggested above, it’s also an opportunity to practise new beneficial behaviours and strengthen ties. Family Day allows us to be together, celebrate one another, and embrace all that is good about those who enrich our lives and allow us to feel connected, while expanding our capacity for the true joy family brings.

My Mother

My mother is the strongest woman I have ever seen in my life. She is a super woman. She can manage everything at the same time so beautifully and confidently. She is a fine individual with poise and dignity. She is the pivot around whom our family revolves. She has raised us with important values in life. She explained to us the true essence of love and compassion. She also tells us the importance of spirituality. She has given utmost importance to our education. She coordinates with our teachers in school and helps us with our weaknesses. My mother is an amazing cook and takes care of what we like to eat. She’s  just not a housewife. She is an entrepreneur too. She owns a restaurant managing a staff of 30 boys. It is indeed not an easy job but she manages everything very efficiently. She is an inspiration to all of us. She is indispensable to our family.

My father is a man of strong principles. His presence at home itself gives us a sense of security and hope. He is very gentle, disciplined and strict. He is a software engineer by qualification and works for a multinational company. Since the headquarters of his company is in The United States of America, he frequently needs to travel. I know he feels very sorry that he is not able to spend much time with us due to work pressure and travel but whenever he is at home he makes the best of it. He has a good sense of humor. He makes us laugh with his jokes and keeps telling us about his work experience. I get a lot of insight from it and clarity of what field I can take when I grow up. I have learnt a most important and valuable lesson from him that is being content in life with whatever I have. The atmosphere in our home becomes so cheerful and joyful when he is around. It gives a feeling of a complete family. He is a dutiful son towards his mother. I want to grow like him and take care of my parents the way he does.

My sister is three years older than me. She is a very soft and gentle girl. She is my best friend and a confidant. We fight on silly things but I know she really cares for me and loves me a lot. She always protects me from getting scolded by my mother. She is an artist and helps me with all my drawings. My sister supports and stands by me when seniors in my school bully me. I feel very secure around her when I am away from my parents.

I woke up very early on my birthday because I had to dress up in casual clothes for school . The day before, all my candies were ready that I would distribute in the classroom.

My mother prepared my favourite breakfast and gave me a big chocolate bar for lunch as well. I went to school and the whole class sang for me and congratulated me. It was the turn to distribute sweets.

My best friend and I went to all the teachers to distribute toffees and we had a great time there. Moreover, it was an incredible feeling. My friends were all singing for me and eager to come to my birthday party later in the evening.
