Call for Applications: CARTA PhD Fellowships 2025

The Consortium for Advanced Research Training in Africa (CARTA) invites applications for its prestigious PhD Fellowships for the year 2025. CARTA is a collaborative initiative involving eight African universities, four African research institutes, and eight non-African partners. Our mission is to bolster the capacity of African institutions to conduct globally competitive research, with a particular focus on addressing health and development challenges in the region.

CARTA PhD Fellowship

As part of its innovations, CARTA offers a collaborative doctoral training program in public and population health. This program has been developed in response to the great challenges faced by Africa’s institutions of higher education in addressing the training and retention of the next generation of academics in the region. Specifically, CARTA seeks to fund candidates who will be future leaders in their institutions. That is, young, capable, and committed individuals who, in time, will ensure that their universities will be the institutions of choice for future generations of academics and university administrators wishing to make a positive impact on public and population health in Africa.

The multi-disciplinary CARTA PhD fellowship is open to staff members of participating institutions who are interested in conducting their PhD research on topics relevant to the broad fields of public and population health. We welcome applications from any discipline, such as public health, demography, anthropology, communication, and economics, among others, as long as the research question aims to contribute to public and population health issues in Africa. CARTA is committed to gender equity in access to the training programs and governance structure and implements a series of interventions to support the progress of women in academia (see CARTA’s gender position ). Women are therefore particularly encouraged to apply.

Successful applicants will attend CARTA’s innovative series of Joint Advanced Seminars (JASES) for cohorts of doctoral students admitted and registered in the participating African universities. Both the development and delivery of these courses are jointly led by regional and international experts. The seminars include didactic sessions, discussions, demonstrations, and practice labs. These activities collectively serve to:

  • Expose students to key theories and concepts, seminal readings, and research methods of disciplines relevant to public and population health;
  • Train students in critical research skills; and
  • Build and maintain a network of researchers for scientific collaborations, professional support, and mutually beneficial exchange of scientific resources.

JASes are offered once annually for four years to each cohort and build skills and conceptual depth from year to year. Each JAS runs for 3 to 4 weeks. Specific topics covered in each JAS include the following:

  • JAS-1 (March 2025) builds critical thinking, technical skills, and other core research competencies, and introduces  students to the essential concepts and seminal articles of the disciplines brought together under CARTA
  • JAS-2   (November 2025)  focuses on data management and analysis. Fellows learn to use software packages for qualitative and quantitative data management and analyses. Practice sessions use real research data and current software packages for hands-on training
  • JAS-3   (August 2027)  focuses on data presentation, the doctoral dissertation, and scientific writing and communication skills to facilitate results dissemination and policy engagement
  • JAS-4   (March 2028)  addresses professional development including skills necessary to manage and teach large class sizes, raise and manage research funds, grant writing, and research management.

In 2025, the CARTA program plans to offer up to 15 PhD fellowships and two additional fellowships reserved for staff members of the Somali National University (SNU), Somalia, who will be mentored by one of the CARTA partners, Makerere University, Uganda. The fellowships, which are tenable at the CARTA African universities, include the following benefits:

  • The cost of the fellow’s participation in the advanced seminars;
  • A modest monthly stipend; moderate support for research activities;
  • A laptop loaded with relevant software;
  • Funds to attend one international conference; and
  • Support to participate in training programs of choice.

Note : The CARTA fellowships run for a maximum of four years. Fellowships will only cover tuition fees, medical insurance, and travel support for fellows registered at a partner institution different from their own.

Respective African partner institutions need to commit to continue paying fellows’ salaries (or equivalent) as faculty members and to modify their workloads for the fellows, to enable them to fully participate in CARTA-organized activities pertaining to their PhD program and also to concentrate on their PhD studies. The partner institutions will also need to commit to waive the fellows’ fees if they are registered at the institution where they are employed. Fellows are encouraged to seek supplemental funding to cover additional costs of their doctoral program.

The Social Science Research Council offers fellowships to support the completion of doctoral degrees and to promote next generation social science research in Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, and Uganda. The fellowships support dissertation research on peace, security, and development topics.

Doctoral dissertation proposal fellowships  support PhD students working on developing a doctoral dissertation research proposal as well as students who recently completed a master’s degree and seek to enroll in a PhD program. The fellowships support short-term research costs of up to US$3,000 to develop a doctoral dissertation proposal.  This program also includes two workshops each year that have been designed to create fellows’ networks, help fellows refine, develop, and strengthen research questions, align research methods to questions, engage key literature in their fields, and finalize their doctoral research proposals.

Eligibility:

All applicants must:

  • be citizens of any sub-Saharan African country
  • be enrolled, or intend to enroll by the time of the award, and working towards a PhD in an accredited university, or affiliated to an institution in Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, and Uganda
  • hold a master’s degree at the time of application

The program prioritizes applicants holding a faculty position or demonstrating a durable commitment to higher education in Africa, but does not restrict eligibility to such individuals.

The program seeks to promote diversity and encourages women to apply.

Thematic Priorities:

The program features a thematic focus on  peace ,  security , and  development  in order to renew basic research agendas and strengthen interdisciplinary social science research capacity addressing these issues.

The program encourages innovative research on peace, security, and development topics, broadly conceived, moving the boundaries of scholarship and research by exploring concrete linkages between these themes. We envision supporting a diverse set of projects seeking to shed light on a range of economic, political, social, conflict and peacebuilding processes using evidence-based research. Some projects, we hope, will examine large-scale phenomena and others small-scale social processes. The strongest projects typically will explore connections across these scales. Some research projects will rigorously explore elements of governance, civil society, human rights, peacebuilding mechanisms/institutions and processes, and rule of law. Others will explore root causes of conflict, emerging trajectories and forms of conflict, insecurities, and human mobilities. Above all projects should advance important fields of study and social science knowledge. Please see the following list of prospective issues that are considered relevant to Next Gen fellowships:

  • Causes and drivers of conflict
  • Institutional and local approaches to conflict prevention, management, and resolution
  • National and Regional approaches to peace, security, and development
  • Identity and conflict
  • Gender, youth, conflict, peacebuilding
  • Conflict, peace and human mobilities
  • Histories, Arts and Cultures of conflict and peace
  • State-Society relations
  • Economic and Humanitarian perspectives to conflict and peace
  • Democracy, human rights, and development
  • Post-conflict development, governance and reconstruction
  • Peace agreements and transitional justice and reconciliation
  • International justice, war crimes, peace and development
  • Law and constitutionalism
  • Natural resource governance, conflict, peace and development
  • Climate Change, conflict, peace, and security
  • Climate change adaptation and mitigation practices and peace
  • Globalization and emerging insecurities
  • Peace education and African literatures
  • Media, digital technology, AI, peace, and security

Application Process:

All applications must be submitted using our online application portal .

Strong proposals will offer clear and concise descriptions of the project and its significance. Proposals should display thorough knowledge of the relevant social science literature that applicants will engage in and the methodologies relevant to the project. In addition, applicants must demonstrate that all proposed activities are feasible and can be completed in a timely manner. All proposals will be evaluated for these criteria by an independent, international committee of leading scholars from a range of social science and related disciplines.  Fellows must be willing to attend two workshops sponsored by the SSRC each year that are intended to help early-career faculty engage in scholarly reflections, research, and writing. We anticipate awarding up to 36 fellowships in total across all three categories each year.

Information on eligibility, the application process, and award details can be found in our Answers to  Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) . For inquiries or technical questions pertaining to the online application portal, please contact SSRC staff from the Next Generation Social Sciences in Africa Program:  [email protected] .

This program is funded by Carnegie Corporation of New York.

Levelling the Playing Field

Science Impact

Increasing equity in science with a focus on gender and academic capacity building in sub-Saharan Africa: Leveling the Playing Field

Empowering scientists capacity building in sub-saharan africa.

Prof Daniel Olusola Ojurongbe: Research Hub Lead in collaboration with Alexander von Humboldt

To truly achieve global equality and a world with Health for All, Hunger for None, a “one size fits all” solution is not enough. The challenges we face today in terms of health, nutrition & climate are complex: these challenges differ around the globe extensively in a practical sense, but importantly, we must also account for the diverse cultural environments around the world.

We believe the answer is to empower scientists globally to define the most important regional challenges and develop solutions that integrate regional expertise and local cultural needs. We can provide support from the global scientific community, but building scientific capacity around the globe is fundamental if we are to genuinely advance equity in science and provide solutions that really meet the needs of All .

Bayer Foundation - Alexander von Humboldt Collaboration

In 2021 we launched an exciting new program together with the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, to provide important funding opportunities for inspiring researchers from sub-Saharan Africa. Through a competitive application process, selected PhD students, post-doctoral researchers & world leading scientists from the region receive generous funding to work on the challenges they define as most important to the region.

Enabling Young African Scientists to Become Scientific Leaders in Their Community

The Bayer Foundation will extend its existing cooperation with the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (AvH), now making research grants available in Germany for doctoral students from across sub-Saharan Africa. PhD fellowships and a research hub in sub-Saharan Africa will further enhance the partnership and facilitate the development of the next generation of scientific leaders within their communities.

Preserving nature, promoting new varieties

Interview with Prof. Dr. Romain Glèlè Kakaï, Chairman of the African-German Network of Excellence in Science (AGNES)

For PhD Students: AGNES-Bayer Science Foundation Research Grants for Sustainable Agriculture & Biodiversity Conservation

This program provides opportunity for outstanding young researchers in Africa to undertake research that will significantly enhance the quality and impact of their PhD program.

Grants of up to 7,000 € for field or laboratory studies are available for PhD students from sub-Saharan-Africa in the research area of Sustainable Agriculture & Biodiversity Conservation.

The application process is managed by AGNES and is independent of Bayer Foundation. We expect the next call to be in Q1 2022, and you can read about the 2021 application process & winners here .

For post-doctoral researchers: Humboldt-Bayer Science Foundation Research Fellowships

The funding program is designed to enable the development of independent scientific ideas and research programs in a world leading scientific environment, as well as establishing a global scientific network. In addition to funding of the research stay, these fellowships provide language classes and support for families of successful applicants to relocate as part of the fellowship.

Fellowships are available for outstanding post-doctoral researchers from sub-Saharan Africa to undertake research stays (1-2 years) at leading scientific institutions in Germany. Projects will typically focus on topics relevant to the further development of the region of origin of the applicant.

The application process is managed by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and is independent of Bayer Foundation. Applications can be made at any via the Georg Forster Research Fellowship or the Humboldt Research Fellowship .

Humboldt - Bayer Science Foundation Research Hubs

Following the onset of the global COVID-19 pandemic, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation established a program to establish five research hubs in sub-Saharan Africa. These hubs allow leading experts across a range of subjects to undertake long-term research projects with relevance to overcoming pandemics.

As part of our collaboration, Bayer Foundation provided funding for a sixth research hub at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology in Nigeria, which is led by Prof. Dr. Daniel Olusola Ojurongbe, an expert in medical molecular biology. The “Center for Emerging and Re-emerging Infectious Diseases” will provide regional rapid testing facilities for infectious diseases, establish local biobanks, as well as undertake research investigating a proposed genetic basis for the apparent low mortality rate for COVID-19 in Africa.

The hub is established as part of a global collaboration in science with Professor Dr Thirumalaisamy P. Velavan, from the University Hospital Tübingen, Germany, Professor Dr Mohamed Osman, University of Khartoum in Sudan.

You can read about the set-up and application process for the program here and meet the six awardees here .

From 2021 – 2026, Bayer Foundation will provide funding of 3 million € to support more than 50 scientists from sub-Saharan Africa with comprehensive research grants in the life sciences. Funding is available for PhD students via the African-German Network of Excellence in Science (AGNES), with funding for postdoctoral researchers & world leading academics available directly through the Alexander von Humboldt research programs.

Fellowships and Grants

The Africana Research Center (ARC) provides monetary support for scholars whose primary research centers on the African Diaspora. Our mission is to encourage and support research and scholarship that enhances the lives of African people across the Diaspora, and serves as a catalyst for promoting an enabling environment where cultural production and discourse on diversity can be nurtured to advance the research, teaching, and outreach mission of Penn State. We strongly encourage the development of interdisciplinary work.

Postdoctoral Fellowship Program

In the fall of 2005, Penn State initiated a postdoctoral Fellowship program for scholars conducting research on Africa and the African Diaspora. Housed in the Africana Research Center (ARC), this initiative is intended to foster a world-class community of early career scholars. Scholars selected as Fellows have opportunities to showcase their research and scholarship as well as to engage with noted scholars in their respective fields. Both contribute to the academic and cultural environments at PSU.

The program runs from July through June each year, with a two-year option. The ARC matches each Fellow with a senior faculty mentor who provides guidance and support throughout the Fellowship year. Fellows are expected to be in residence and to be active in PSU’s community of scholars; however, they are not assigned teaching or administrative responsibilities during their residencies. Fellows take part in a series of professional development seminars as well as writing-for-publication sessions. The Fellowship provides a salary of $56,484, plus health insurance and funds for research and moving expenses. The hosting department also provides office space and a computer.

The ARC is now accepting fellowship applications via PSU careers:  https://hr.psu.edu/careers ; REQ_0000048865 Postdoctoral Scholar, Africana Research Center.

Eligibility

Applicants must conduct research that centers on or is related to Africa and the African Diaspora. Ideally, applicants will have been awarded the doctorate within the past five years or will earn the doctorate before the start of the Fellowship year. Applications are accepted from all disciplines; however, as the ARC is housed in the College of the Liberal Arts (CLA), preference is afforded to applicants with research that aligns with the CLA departments. For a complete listing of CLA academic departments, please see:  Academic Departments in Liberal Arts

Selection Process

Applications will be evaluated by a committee composed of the ARC Director and other Penn State faculty. Up to six candidates will be invited to campus to participate in the Emerging Scholars Speaker Series (ESSS), during which they will showcase their research and meet with faculty and administrators. The next ESSS event takes place in February-March 2024. Two fellows will be chosen from among the ESSS participants for the academic year in April.

Notification of Fellowship Award

Notifications will be made in early April of 2024.

Dissertation Fellows Program

The Dissertation Fellows Program is for graduate students who have passed their comprehensive examinations. The program partners with centers like the ARC to provide students $1,500 in research funds. If selected, scholars will be affiliated with the ARC. Scholars will have opportunities to take part in or plan some of its activities, share common experiences with others affiliated with the ARC, and share work-in-progress with faculty and other graduate students. Those wishing to apply should have research that centers on or furthers the ARC’s mission.

For complete College of the Liberal Arts requirements, please visit:  https://la.psu.edu/graduate-students/graduate-funding/ .

Applicants should send one copy of application materials, as a pdf, to:

Sinfree Makoni ( [email protected] )

The ARC interim director, together with a committee, will make the selections. Notification will be made by December 1.

Note: Because we are part of the College of Liberal Arts and the Humanities umbrella, we only consider candidates outside that umbrella if we receive no viable Humanities candidates. Please check back after the deadline if you are outside of the College of the Liberal Arts and are interested in applying for a fellowship. Applicants must be ABD and already receiving dissertation support through their College, which this award would supplement.

Alliance for African Partnership

2024 Call for Proposals

Partnerships for innovative research in africa.

Info session and Q&A slides  [pdf]

The Alliance for African Partnership (AAP), a consortium of ten leading African universities, a distinguished research network for African research institute, and Michigan State University, is inviting proposals for its Partnerships for Innovative Research in Africa (PIRA) strategic funding program. As a consortium-wide initiative, PIRA is a tiered funding opportunity designed to cultivate and support multidirectional, collaborative research partnerships at any stage of their development, whether they are initiatives to explore and create new relationships or scale existing ones. One of the unique aspects to these grants is the expectation that organizations will establish and develop fair and equitable partnerships from conception to closeout of the project, involving local stakeholders throughout the project, respecting their knowledge and expertise, and taking an adaptive approach that is responsive to the local context. Proposals should outline processes to establish such partnerships. Fair and equitable partnerships must also be established among members of the consortium if multiple organizations are working on the implementation of the project. Proposed partnership activities may entail cooperative research, capacity building initiatives, outreach and/or other activities that align with AAP’s pillars of building bridges, transforming institutions, and transforming lives. Proposals must address at least one of AAP’s  priority areas : agri-food systems; water, energy and  environment; culture and society; youth empowerment; education; health and nutrition; and, science, technology, and innovation.

AAP_Priority Area_Graphic_20240306.png

Proposals are encouraged from diverse disciplinary perspectives. Submitted proposals must include  principal investigators from both MSU and at least one African AAP member university . The project implementation timeframe will be 18 months.

FUNDING TIERS

The tiered funding structure is designed to support partnerships at different stages of maturity to create and strengthen relationships among institutions and act as a catalyst for research teams in securing external funding that will allow for long-term engagement . Applicants should submit proposals for the funding tier that best fits the level of engagement established among the PIs on the research team.  However, AAP management reserves the right to relegate proposals to a different tier if deemed more appropriate during review. To ensure broad impact, more awards will be given at the planning grant level than the scaling grant level. Proposed activities for each tier may include, but are not limited to:

  • Planning Grants (up to $50,000) , inception and early-stage partnership research activities, travel support for co-developing joint proposals (in accordance with all MSU travel guidelines), short-term capacity building trainings, network development, research symposia, or other activities that align with AAP’s priority themes and strategic objectives.
  • Scaling Grants (up to $100,000) , continuation of ongoing partnerships that have the potential to significantly scale their research, capacity building, or outreach activities, broader institutional linkages, or other activities that align with AAP’s priority themes and strategic objectives.

ELIGIBILITY

  • The lead investigators for proposals must come from MSU and AAP African member universities. Proposals may also include partners from other institutions globally. Teams are encouraged to include partners from the private sector, governments, civil society organizations, and pan-African/global institutions.
  • Individuals who were PIs or co-PIs on grants from the previous round of PIRA grants or AAP’s strategic partnership grants are not eligible to lead proposals under this call but may participate as team members.
  • MSU ISP staff are not eligible to lead proposals.

GUIDELINES FOR APPLICANTS

All submissions must have a cover sheet and proposal narrative that includes the information listed below, a budget and budget narrative using the provided template, and letters of support. Please submit all application material via the application portal by Wednesday, August 14 at 11:59 PM EST.

  • Application with the project's title as well as names, institutional affiliations, titles of all principal investigators, and a brief (about 100 words) project summary
  • A proposal narrative, not to exceed 5,000 words with one appendix for references cited, that includes:
  • A description of the partnership, containing:
  • Capacity statements from each partner institution that outlines their respective strengths in relation to their proposed roles and responsibilities in the partnership
  • A brief description of the past or ongoing partnership, if applicable
  • The rationale for partnership and evidence that it will create or cultivate equitable, sustainable, and mutually beneficial partnerships
  • A problem statement that identifies the shared challenges to be addressed by the program activities, the theory of change, their relevance to AAP’s themes and pillars
  • Clearly defined objectives of the proposed partnership
  • A description of program activities as well as a logical framework that connects the proposed activities with their intended outputs, outcomes, and programmatic objectives
  • A timeline of activities
  • A monitoring, evaluating, and learning plan that outlines proposed indicators and collection methods
  • Identification of potential sources of additional funding that the partnership will pursue during the program’s period of performance
  • A line-item budget and budget narrative using the template provided. Templates and more information on budgetary considerations are below in BUDGET. A letter of support from each partner’s department, institution, or organization; and A CV or resume of each principal investigator (1-page max).
  • A letter of support for each PI from their dean or head of department that signifies buy-in from each partner at the institutional level. Please use the provided template

SELECTION CRITERIA

Program goals should align with at least one of AAP’s pillars:

  • Building bridges:  Bringing people and organizations together to work toward common goals. Illustrative activities under this objective include: sponsoring thematic symposia or workshops that bring people together across sectors and disciplines or travel for preparation of proposals for larger grant applications. This also includes network development, communications among research groups or networks (e.g. digital innovations and digital forums), dissemination of knowledge through online journals and/or sharing of best practices among partners
  • Transforming institutions:  Promoting sustainable and effective partnerships among institutions, enhancing resources, and increasing institutional capacity. Illustrative activities under this objective include: institutional capacity development at universities, NGOs, or in the public sector such as building financial management capacity, improving teaching and learning at universities, and/or increasing proposal development skills, among others.
  • Transforming lives:  Supporting research with real-world impact that improves African lives and livelihoods. Illustrative activities under this objective include: putting research into action through evidence-based outreach and engagement, conducting early-stage research that has obvious potential to impact lives and livelihoods, improving dissemination of research outputs to practitioners and policy-makers, and/or designing innovative research-into-practice methodologies.

Submitted proposals will be evaluated according to the following criteria:

  • Evidence of a collaborative and equitable partnership that strengthens personal, professional, and/or institutional networks in a mutually beneficial and sustainable way. Other AAP principles that need to be demonstrated in the proposal and later in the implementation are mutual trust and respect, sustainability, innovativeness, co-creation, accountability, transparency, flexibility as well as multi-disciplinarity and trans-disciplinarity.
  • Alignment of proposed activities and program goal(s) to AAP’s 3 strategic objectives and 7 priority areas.
  • Potential for program deliverables to significantly contribute to their respective academic, technical, or technological fields.
  • Potential to create innovative models of community engagement and development that positively impact people’s lives.
  • Potential for principal investigators to attract and or leverage additional external funding to sustain program’s impact.
  • A thorough monitoring, evaluating, and learning plan that links program activities to their intended outputs and outcomes and includes a clear description of the MEL tools that will be used, what indicators will be measured, and a timeline for evaluation and reporting.
  • Gender equality, equity and inclusion are core values of AAP and are thus central to this call. All projects funded must demonstrate how they follow principles of gender and inclusion and should explain how applicants will integrate gender, equity, and inclusion issues in all stages of the project, including rationale, design, intended results, data collection, analysis, interpretation, and knowledge mobilization processes.

PIRA BUDGET TEMPLATE [.XLSX]

Using the template provided, applicants must submit a line-item budget and budget narrative for the life of the program that details each institution’s requested budget as well as an overall budget summary. Suggested line items are provided as guidelines but are not comprehensive or required. Proposed budgets should be co-created by the partnership teams and reflect an equitable distribution of funds, with each institution completing a separate tab within the budget template to show the anticipated disbursement of resources and cost sharing broken down by yearly expenditures. The budget narrative should clearly explain how the line items are calculated and for what purpose they will be used in achieving the program’s objectives. Please note that the MSU PI and their home department will be responsible for the financial administration of the award. As such, it is required that the MSU PI involve their department’s fiscal officer in the development of the proposed budget to ensure all financial guidelines and reporting requirements are met. Please submit budgets as an Excel file or similar formatted version that allows the reviewers to view the formulas used in the calculations.

Communications and Engagement 10% of the total requested funds must be earmarked for communication and engagement efforts. For example, if a team is requesting a scaling grant for $100,000, at least $10,000 of that must be budgeted for communication and engagement efforts, such as developing creative projects that translate the research, engagement workshops and developing and utilizing dissemination tools such as video production, creation of digital resources, community engagement activities, etc.

10% of the total requested funds must be matched with contributions (monetary and/or in-kind) from all partners. The Co-PIs’ colleges, faculties. and/or departments will be expected to contribute to the costs of the proposed activities to ensure that the commitment to long-term partnering is shared by these units.

Ineligible Expenses

While funding may be used for a variety of activities, the following expenses are not eligible to be covered with the PIRA grants:

  • Regular salary of MSU faculty (summer salary is allowable)
  • Indirect costs (IDC)
  • Equipment exceeding $5,000
  • Construction-related costs

SELECTION PROCESS

Proposals will initially be reviewed by the AAP management team according to the guidelines and criteria above. Short-listed applications will be assessed by external peer reviewers for quality of technical content. Final selections will be made by the AAP management team in consultation with its internal partners and consortium members.

SUBMISSION AND AWARD TIMELINE

African Researchers' Small Grants Program

Though more than half of the burden of NTDs is focused in Africa, involvement of African entities in research and advocacy has been more limited, at least in part due to the paucity of opportunities for young scientists to lead research projects. To achieve elimination and control targets, local stakeholders need to understand why challenges persist, before they can determine the most appropriate interventions and approaches to address them. Efforts are needed, then, to bridge the gap between the needs of national NTD programs and local research teams. While the former group is most familiar with the programmatic issues, the latter group is best placed to translate problems into research questions, and to design appropriate studies to efficiently answer these questions. As such, coordination between the two presents an effective platform for NTD control and elimination in the African subregion most burdened by these diseases.  Addressing this critical challenge is one of the goals of the African Research Network for Neglected Tropical Diseases, or ARNTD ( https://arntd.org/ ).

Building capacity in young researchers represents a promising solution to retaining skilled researchers in the fight against NTDs and to ensure impactful results for NTD control programs. The African Researchers' Small Grants Program, funded through COR-NTD, was designed to fulfill this aim. Launched in 2017, the African Researchers’ Small Grants Program provides research funding to individual researchers based on the African continent. With this funding, they can develop solutions to the problems posed by NTDs in their home countries. Since its launch in 2017, and with generous support from USAID and UK aid, the African Researchers’ Small Grants Program has provided more than $1.5 million in research funds to 66 researchers from 16 countries. This relatively modest investment has catalyzed improvements to the efforts to eliminate NTDs in Africa.

How a Modest Investment is Supporting Homegrown Science in Benin and Beyond

Stories from the program, publications related to small grant research, accuracy and precision of dried urine spot method for the detection of schistosoma mansoni circulating cathodic antigens in resource-limited settings, female genital schistosomiasis lesion resolution post-treatment with praziquantel in zambian adults, mass drug administration campaigns: comparing two approaches for schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminths prevention and control in selected southern malawi districts, improved prevention of female genital schistosomiasis: piloting integration of services into the national health system in côte d’ivoire, impact of basic psychological support on stigma and the mental well-being of people with disabilities due to leprosy and lymphatic filariasis: a postintervention evaluation study, integrated services for neglected tropical diseases and mental health: pilot study assessing acceptability, feasibility and attitudes in benue state, nigeria, past calls for proposals, call for african researchers’ small grants program (sgp v) proposals, small grant funded studies, alternative approaches to coverage surveys (honduras).

Develop a program evaluation tool to permit program managers to effectively assess coverage and compliance. This study will focus on assessing MDA coverage for lymphatic filariasis by comparing the cost, time and feasibility of the EPI approach (n=480), LQAS design (n=95) and probability sampling alternatives (n=480).

Preliminary study findings:

  • All three survey methods were feasible for the teams to implement and cost <$5,000.
  • Preschool deworming coverage, provided through the community-based MDA, was <60%.
  • The main reason for refusing the medication was that the child had recently been dewormed.
  • Approximately 80% of preschool children surveyed received at least one dose of unprogrammed deworming in the past 12 months.
  • The main sources of unprogrammed deworming were health centers, local pharmacies, and bodegas.

Developing a surveillance framework for the post-elimination phase of the lymphatic filariasis programme in Bangladesh

  • Can the micro-stratification of lymphatic filariasis (LF) transmission assessment surveys positive case and clinical case data be used to identify, map and monitor transmission hotspots as part of an enhanced endgame surveillance strategy?
  • Can targeted molecular xenomonitoring detect ongoing transmission [to the same extent as human surveillance] in defined LF transmission hotspots?

The Impact of an Integrated Health System Approach in Improving Access to Morbidity Management and Disability Prevention Services for Persons with Leprosy, Hydrocele, and Lymphoedema in Coastal Kenya

Adding Antibody Testing to Mini-TAS

To compare results from Brugia Rapid tests (in 3 districts) and FTS (in 2 districts) with Wb123 rapid tests and Wb123 and Bm14 ELISA testing.

Preliminary Findings

  • In March and April 2017, NIMPE had organized teams to go to the field to collect samples. In Duy Tien district, all of 20 primary schools were visited and 320 pupils were tested. In Quang Ninh district, all of 21 primary schools were visited and 323 students participated in the survey. In Le Thuy district, 35 of 38 primary schools were visited and 344 pupils had blood samples taken.
  • In total, 987 serum samples were collected but one sample was ran out of serum after doing quick tests (Brugia rapid and FTS). Finally, 986 samples were collected for the antibodies test. The serum samples were kept in frieze (-20 0 C) until analysis. Base on the cut–off 0.096 that was calculated by CDC, no positive case was found by this technique.
  • Wb123 testing was applied in all three districts to detect W. bancrofti antibody. All 986 samples were tested, but no positive case was found. This result did not indicate that the Wb123 testing accuracy is equivalent to FTS but did show that no cross action with B. malayi and other parasites was found within the study.
  • All 986 serum samples that collected from the three districts in the Mini TAS were tested by Bm14 to detect B.malayi antibody. No positive case was recorded and this result was comparable to the result from Brugia rapid test.
  • Following these data, the researchers supposed that the ELISA testing could be comparable to the quick testing with regards to accuracy. However, since no positive case was found and we could not conclude about the sensitivity and the specificity of the test. Therefore, a further study should be continued especially in endemic areas in which possibly can find some positive cases for assessment and conclusion.

  25. Africa needs more PhDs, but they must be of high quality

Having said that, the rule of thumb with an enormous endorsement from stellar universities around the world, is that one dissertation supervisor should supervise a maximum of 10 doctoral students. Quality is compromised when a dissertation supervisor, as in many African private universities, has more than 10 doctoral students to supervise.
