You can tell a ChatGPT-written article by its simple, repetitive structure and its tendency to make logical and factual errors. Some tools are available for automatically detecting AI-generated text, but they are prone to false positives.

AI technology is changing what we see online and how we interact with the world. From a Midjourney photo of the Pope in a puffer coat to language learning models like ChatGPT, artificial intelligence is working its way into our lives.

The more sinister uses of AI tech, like a political disinformation campaign blasting out fake articles, mean we need to educate ourselves enough to spot the fakes. So how can you tell if an article is actually AI generated text?

Multiple methods and tools currently exist to help determine whether the article you're reading was written by a robot. Not all of them are 100% reliable, and they can deliver false positives, but they do offer a starting point.

One big marker of human-written text, at least for now, is randomness. While people will write using different styles and slang and often make typos, AI language models very rarely make those kinds of mistakes. According to MIT Technology Review , "human-written text is riddled with typos and is incredibly variable," while AI generated text models like ChatGPT are much better at creating typo-less text. Of course, a good copy editor will have the same effect, so you have to watch for more than just correct spelling.

Another indicator is punctuation patterns. Humans will use punctuation more randomly than an AI model might. AI generated text also usually contains more connector words like "the," "it," or "is" instead of larger more rarely used words because large language models operate by predicting what word will is most likely to come next, not coming up with something that would sound good the way a human might.

This is visible in ChatGPT's response to one of the stock questions on OpenAI's website. AI-generated articles tend to have a certain level of polish and consistency that is often associated with perfection. They are designed to adhere to grammatical rules and maintain a structured flow. However, this perfection often comes at the cost of creativity and the human touch. Humans make mistakes, AI writing is engineered to be objectively "perfect."

Look Out For Uncanny, Polished Language

AI tools like ChatGPT are trained using heaps of data, helping them spot patterns in text after reading countless articles. Essentially, it doesn’t “think” or “feel” in the way humans do. But instead processes and reproduces patterns from vast datasets.

Take this generated writing for example:

It’s alright, but it sounds too vague and generic. The language itself feels off and the almost human-like tone is treading into this uncanny valley territory. 

From my experience, there are a few indicators that tell me intuitively a writing is likely AI-generated:

• Complex vocabulary and jargon is used.
• The tone used is often too formal.
• The content lacks depth and solely relies on surface-level information.
• The sentence structure and length is predictably consistent and lengthy.

However, this is often not a definitive way to detect ChatGPT. 

If one is excellent at prompt engineering , they can easily curate an output that sounds less “robotic”. And with AI technology constantly improving and updating, this is certainly a feat that’s currently being worked on with ChatGPT-4 .

The Best ChatGPT AI Writing Detection Tools

So what else can we do? Use AI to spot another AI.

Please keep in mind there is no mathematically definite way to confirm AI-generated writing and that all of these tools work on predictions, but they are decent indicators.

Here are my top picks after analyzing detectors for months on end:

Tool 1: Undetectable.AI

I really like Undetectable because they made a tool that analyzes every other detector you'll run into online. They created their own detectors by sampling the models of a bunch of existing ones. It's a great way to combine some of the most popular tools into one.

They run your writing through some of the most popular AI detection tools like Content At Scale and GPTZero (which we'll get into later) by analyzing how those tools would classify your writing if you tested them individually. They base this on thousands of writing samples.

I've noticed both Undetectable and Content at Scale are fairly conservative with their predictions & try not to false flag anyone. But always take these results with a grain of salt.

I also like the fact that Undetectable tries to be hesitant about writing. I don't think you should classify AI writing unless you're fairly confident about it.

You open up massive problems like what's happening with schools that implemented TurnItIn's very own detection tools . Students are getting written up for using AI when they haven't. It's failing students, impacting their chances of getting into college, and creating a bitter relationship between students and teachers. All based on something you can't truly "prove." AI detection should be speculative, but that's a story for another day.

In a few seconds you'll see the result of your writing get thrown through a bunch of other AI detection models and predict the likelihood that you'd get picked up by them. It's that easy:

Tool 2: CopyLeaks

CopyLeaks is probably the most straightforward & fairly strict AI detection tool. It detects ChatGPT-generated writing regardless of which model somebody is using. It's quick, free, and I'd consider it to be reliable.

They also are pretty good at figuring text that's in the middle (writing that is a mix of ChatGPT & human writing).

Paste your writing, press check, give it a few seconds, and you'll have a result. Here’s what it looks like:

Tool 3: Originality AI

While CopyLeaks is meant for testing quick content (and it does it pretty well), Originality AI does have the tendency to over-predict at times, which I don't like.

Originality AI is better for industry-level & bulk testing. It works the same as all the other tools: Copy & paste suspected ChatGPT content and let it do the rest of the work for you. However, you’ll need to subscribe to their paid plans to use it. If you want to read an in-depth review of how Originality AI works, we broke it down in this review .

For the free version, they have a Chrome extension browser you can try out. After installing, it can scan up to a maximum of 5000 words (1 credit per 100 words). It will display a percentage showing if a text is more or less likely to have been written by an AI or human. 

Also, with all types of AI detectors, the more writing Originality AI has to work with and analyze, the more reliable of a prediction you'll have. It's safer to say 10 AI-written verdicts on the same writer are a lot more reliable of a prediction than a single declaration. 

So remember to do more testing than submit a single writing sample and base an entire decision on that.

I'd say my favorite feature in Originality is the writing visualizer .

It works by re-typing the article directly in front of you.

For it to work, you need to have access to a Google doc with editing permissions enabled. Simply install the chrome extension & visualize the writing.

You'll see the article get crafted back right in front of you. SUPER useful if you want to try to catch people copy and pasting ChatGPT content directly into a paper. There's no other tool that comes as close to Originality in that regard – & I use it all the time.

Tool 4: Content At Scale

The next tool you could use to check for ChatGPT is using Content at Scale's AI Detector .

I've been using this tool from the very day it was released and love it because it tends to not "over-predict" writing. It's also completely free.

I'd rather let some AI get through if it meant not flagging someone on accident. If you want a more strict tool, Originality is probably the better choice.

Here's an example of a snippet I generated using ChatGPT & pasted directly into their tool:

Paste it in the tool, wait about 5-10 seconds, and you'll get a line-by-line breakdown on top of a percentage about if it was written by ChatGPT.

Once submitted, you'll see this content was very likely to be written by AI. The content was easily predictable, followed a lot of patterns, and wrote probable content.

The more content you test from the same author (and length) will increase the likelihood of these prediction results being reliable. I'd still recommend taking these with a grain of salt.

Content at Scale will also highlight each line it believes to be written by ChatGPT (the orange text on the right). In this case, it was the entire piece! (which is true in this example)

If you need something more strict though, maybe something a little harder on both ChatGPT writing & plagiarism, look into Originality .

Tool 5: Gold Penguin's AI Detector

Yes... we actually made one ourselves! After testing these tools throughout the last few months it was only a matter of time. I decided to list our AI writing detection tool last because it generally under-predicts AI writing.

We created it to minimize the risk of falsely flagging someone as using ChatGPT to write something. Some of the other detectors have been caught flagging the constitution of the United States as being AI-written! That's insane!

Anyways, our tool is free & extremely simple to use. Just paste the text into the input box and check for AI:

It Started with GLTR

You used to be able to run any text through GLTR . It was the start of AI detection before that really become a thing. It was trained on GPT-2 years ago. It worked as a free tool and to see a "heatmap" type of diagram showing AI predictability.

While it doesn't work anymore (presumably because it wasn't reliable as AI writing got better) it helps visually explain what AI detection really is.

Can Teachers and Professors Detect ChatGPT?

They can't prove it, but can get a fairly decent inclination, especially based on repeated samples of writing. The most reliable way would be testing multiple samples of a students writing through different AI detectors & writing visualizers , but there's no foolproof method.

You're looking at words on a screen when you really think about it. The only way teachers, professors, and other educators can really get around the ChatGPT craze is to have students complete writings on paper, in class.

Does ChatGPT Have a Watermark?

No. And it might not be possible. See our article on them disabling their very own detector.

As of the moment, it is only currently being applied to images generated in Dall-E 3 . But it is doing rather poorly because of how insanely easy it is to remove them .

What's Next?

It's hard to tell, I don't really know. Of course there are still many things ChatGPT cannot accomplish, but it seems overnight we've upgraded societies technical skills. The education or professional industry won't be ruined because of this – but it'll certainly cause a disruption .

Remember to take any result with a grain of salt, as no tool can 100% determine if AI was used to generate if ChatGPT wrote something. Use your best judgment and always use more than one route when determining the likelihood of something being written by ChatGPT. Also, this article wasn't pro or anti-AI but rather an educational piece describing a few ways to detect it. The next few years will certainly be exciting!

Teachers worried about students turning in essays written by a popular artificial intelligence chatbot now have a new tool of their own.

Edward Tian, a 22-year-old senior at Princeton University, has built an app to detect whether text is written by ChatGPT, the viral chatbot that's sparked fears over its potential for unethical uses in academia.

Edward Tian, a 22-year-old computer science student at Princeton, created an app that detects essays written by the impressive AI-powered language model known as ChatGPT.

Tian, a computer science major who is minoring in journalism, spent part of his winter break creating GPTZero, which he said can "quickly and efficiently" decipher whether a human or ChatGPT authored an essay.

His motivation to create the bot was to fight what he sees as an increase in AI plagiarism. Since the release of ChatGPT in late November, there have been reports of students using the breakthrough language model to pass off AI-written assignments as their own.

"there's so much chatgpt hype going around. is this and that written by AI? we as humans deserve to know!" Tian wrote in a tweet introducing GPTZero.

Tian said many teachers have reached out to him after he released his bot online on Jan. 2, telling him about the positive results they've seen from testing it.

More than 30,000 people had tried out GPTZero within a week of its launch. It was so popular that the app crashed. Streamlit, the free platform that hosts GPTZero, has since stepped in to support Tian with more memory and resources to handle the web traffic.

How GPTZero works

To determine whether an excerpt is written by a bot, GPTZero uses two indicators: "perplexity" and "burstiness." Perplexity measures the complexity of text; if GPTZero is perplexed by the text, then it has a high complexity and it's more likely to be human-written. However, if the text is more familiar to the bot — because it's been trained on such data — then it will have low complexity and therefore is more likely to be AI-generated.

Separately, burstiness compares the variations of sentences. Humans tend to write with greater burstiness, for example, with some longer or complex sentences alongside shorter ones. AI sentences tend to be more uniform.

In a demonstration video, Tian compared the app's analysis of a story in The New Yorker and a LinkedIn post written by ChatGPT. It successfully distinguished writing by a human versus AI.

A new AI chatbot might do your homework for you. But it's still not an A+ student

Tian acknowledged that his bot isn't foolproof, as some users have reported when putting it to the test. He said he's still working to improve the model's accuracy.

But by designing an app that sheds some light on what separates human from AI, the tool helps work toward a core mission for Tian: bringing transparency to AI.

"For so long, AI has been a black box where we really don't know what's going on inside," he said. "And with GPTZero, I wanted to start pushing back and fighting against that."

The quest to curb AI plagiarism

Ai-generated fake faces have become a hallmark of online influence operations.

The college senior isn't alone in the race to rein in AI plagiarism and forgery. OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, has signaled a commitment to preventing AI plagiarism and other nefarious applications. Last month, Scott Aaronson, a researcher currently focusing on AI safety at OpenAI, revealed that the company has been working on a way to "watermark" GPT-generated text with an "unnoticeable secret signal" to identify its source.

The open-source AI community Hugging Face has put out a tool to detect whether text was created by GPT-2, an earlier version of the AI model used to make ChatGPT. A philosophy professor in South Carolina who happened to know about the tool said he used it to catch a student submitting AI-written work.

The New York City education department said on Thursday that it's blocking access to ChatGPT on school networks and devices over concerns about its "negative impacts on student learning, and concerns regarding the safety and accuracy of content."

Tian is not opposed to the use of AI tools like ChatGPT.

GPTZero is "not meant to be a tool to stop these technologies from being used," he said. "But with any new technologies, we need to be able to adopt it responsibly and we need to have safeguards."

How to Tell if Something Was Written by ChatGPT

ChatGPT, version 4o or else, can write very elegantly under most criteria. It produces immaculate, grammatically correct writings… which could be gibberish. Since it produces paragraphs (and bullet points) that look so correct, many people are tempted to consider its write-ups useful. They’re usually far from that.

That poses an additional problem for programmers. Developers who ask ChatGPT for help will never get an “I’m sorry—I’d ask a colleague of yours about this.” Rather than that, any chatbot—not just ChatGPT—will go off in a writing frenzy and turn out code. That doesn’t mean that the code, that looks pristine, will work. Studies are showing that most of the ChatGPT answers for developers are wrong , and almost 8 out of 10 are verbose. They look grandiose. But they’re fools’ gold .

Still, that’s something to worry about once you get the job. If you’re a developer seeking employment, you can always rely on LLMs for your cover letter. But you don’t want your job application to give away an effortless, buzzword-laden, even incorrect statement. We advise that you seek out the signs to detect if something was written by ChatGPT and do something about it.

How to detect ChatGPT writing    

Most writers can easily tell when something is written by AI, especially when the user is lazy enough to simply input, “Write me an article about XYZ” or “I need an Instagram caption about XYZ”. However, if you’re someone who doesn’t have a background in writing or editing, you probably ask yourself fairly regularly, did ChatGPT write this? Or, is there a way to detect ChatGPT written content? And the answer is yes, yes, there is.

For the sake of this article, I’ve asked ChatGPT-4o to write some text. We then break down the text to provide examples of what to look for.

First, we’ll go through the typical signs of most Large Language Models . This is how you detect ChatGPT write-ups:

• Bullet points all around, even when they don’t serve the purpose : LLMs seem to prefer bullets to standard paragraphs. This got out of hand when Google’s Gemini dropped. ChatGPT 3.5, for example, wasn’t that prone to writing bullet points for everything. This whole section is written in bullets, so that’s for you to consider: Was it actually written by a machine? You can easily tell. ‍
• Hallucinations and factual inaccuracies: It’s a challenging time to surf the web, because it’s hard to spot a factual inaccuracy when you don’t know about the topic in the first place. But LLMs are now telling you to eat pizza with non-toxic glue . When you come across such a statement, you can tell it’s an AI because it goes against common sense. Large Language Models don’t have a symbolic understanding of how the world works (i.e. their images don’t usually agree with physics ), and so they can’t reason that their advice can hurt someone. They’re just very expensive and energy-consuming parrots. ‍
• A knack for complicated words : Delve, cutting-edge, rich tapestry, “ever-evolving landscape” and explore will show up plenty of times, even if it doesn’t fit the situation. You don’t go around calling C++ “cutting-edge software.” Large Language Models will prefer to elaborate on something “tailored for” or “catering to” even if that verbosity was uncalled-for. To be fair, plenty of English speakers in Nigeria use “delve” daily. But if you’re not from Nigeria or are not interacting with a Nigerian programmer, look out for it. There’s nothing wrong with it per se, but it has become an indicative sign of a low-effort, automatic write-up. ‍
• American spelling: Many Europeans write their correspondence in British English, but ChatGPT might make cover letters in American English with a lot of ‘z’ characters and very few ‘u’ characters. This is probably because OpenAI “fed” their engine with easy-to-access content in US English, like most of Reddit or The New York Times is written in. ‍
• Disclaimers that show up frequently : People have said that they’ve been reading academic papers that start with the phrase: “As a large-language model trained by OpenAI, I can’t…” or even the phrase: “Regenerate Response.” That’s how pervasive this clue is. It’s the disclaimer OpenAI gives you when you ask for something that the solution can’t do. ‍
• Surplus brackets : Chatbots and Pete Doherty have something in common: They both brought brackets back from oblivion. If you ask it to write a template, it will have brackets all around. If someone forgets to remove or fill in these brackets, they’ll be giving away a no-effort ChatGPT write-up. ‍
• Wordiness, because time is not of the essence : Chatbots aren’t held accountable if they go over word-count limits or if they’re verbose because they don’t invest time as we do. They’re usually long-winded. Text can be incredibly long and vague, and against the notion of being specific. ‍
• A remarkable absence of meaning : Large Language Models struggle to say something helpful. They cannon-fodder words and fight long and hard to say less than the Lorem Ipsum boilerplate text. Usually, they’ll give advice such as “highlight your skills.” That’s not real-world actionable guidance.

Example 1 — How to get a job as a programmer

We asked a very expensive chatbot (we won’t tell you which one—but let us clarify they all suffer from the same problems) to tell us how to get a job as a programmer. Check the machine’s answer:

Networking and Job Search:

• Build your online presence: Connect with developers on LinkedIn and participate in online coding communities.
• Craft a strong resume and cover letter: Highlight your skills and projects, tailoring them to specific job descriptions.
• Prepare for interviews: Practice coding challenges and common developer interview questions.

As expected, it abuses from bullet points, it says vapid words, and gives directions to “tailor.” To be fair, these bullet points are not that particularly bad. They are good pointers as to where to start. But they’re superficially unhelpful. If you were to ask the machine to expand on each, you’d get tonnes of gibberish that looks very neat. Building an online presence takes heaps of time, but since the LLMs can’t be held accountable, they’ll hurl the advice away as if it were a walk in the park.

When you’re using ChatGPT to your greatest advantage, use it up to this point, and then just leave it behind. You now have an idea of how to proceed. Now keep the decision-making human. They’re better writers, but their understanding of how you interact with the world is terrible.

Example 2 — Introduction paragraph 

We asked ChatGPT to “write me an introduction paragraph for an article called ‘How to tell if something was written by ChatGPT’.”

As we said earlier, ChatGPT writes elegantly. However, the above text features overly complex sentence structures such as, “Understanding the telltale signs that reveal its hand in crafting a composition becomes both an art and a science.” 

And an unusually formal tone, “We delve deep into the intricacies of language and the subtle nuances that might betray the digital origins of a piece of text”. Also, “Join us on this exploration”, you’d think we were taking a trip to Antarctica, not reading about how to detect ChatGPT writing. “Fascinating challenge”, we wouldn’t say this topic is fascinating, would you? If what you’re reading features unusual or incorrect wording, that’s also usually a red flag. 🚩

Example 3 — Health article

We asked ChatGPT to “write me an article about Intermittent Fasting”. Firstly, the article it produced was nearly 3,000 words long, which is another telltale sign. AI-generated articles are usually unnecessarily long and wordy. They also don’t always make sense. For example, this is a section from the article:

Moreover, research has demonstrated that implementing an intermittent fasting lifestyle can potentially reverse the trend of obesity and prevent or even reverse some forms of disease. This eating plan works by prolonging the period when your body has burned through the calories consumed during your last meal and begins burning fat.

Here are some benefits and mechanisms behind this approach….

In summary, intermittent fasting has numerous potential health benefits including longevity promotion, cognitive enhancement, weight management assistance, and disease prevention/reversal. However, like any dietary change or regimen alteration, it's important to consult with a healthcare professional before starting an intermittent fasting lifestyle.

Benefits and Mechanism? Really, ChatGPT? Unless you’re writing a Thesis, no one talks like this. And to add, if you’re wondering how to detect ChatGPT writing in a Thesis, the lack of credible sources should be a big hint. 

“This eating plan works by prolonging the period when your body has burned through the calories consumed during your last meal and begins burning fat.” Again, this sentence is quite complex and won’t make sense to a general audience. Rule of thumb: if it’s complicated to read and seems to ramble with intricate sentences that don’t really make sense, it’s probably been written by ChatGPT. 

“In summary, intermittent fasting has numerous potential health benefits including longevity promotion, cognitive enhancement, weight management assistance, and disease prevention/reversal.” ChatGPT's summary simply repeated the “benefits and mechanisms” listed above without actually summarising the section. So watch out for repetitive words or phrases, as these will likely suggest AI-written content.

Example 4 — Promotional email 

We asked ChatGPT to “Write a paragraph for an email promoting a 50% off storewide sale on gluten-free products.” Here it goes:

Dear Health Enthusiast,

Exciting news! Our gluten-free health products, carefully curated for your wellness journey, are now available at an irresistible 50% discount storewide! 🌱 From wholesome gluten-free snacks to nourishing supplements, we've got everything you need to support your healthy lifestyle.

Whether you're looking for delicious alternatives to traditional snacks or seeking premium supplements tailored to your dietary needs, our store is your ultimate destination for quality gluten-free products. Indulge in guilt-free treats, discover new flavors, and explore a wide array of natural, gluten-free options without breaking the bank. It's our way of making your health journey more affordable and enjoyable.

Hurry, stock up on your favorites, and embrace a healthier you with a shopping experience that's light on your wallet but rich in benefits. Happy and healthy shopping!

We think this one’s quite obvious. The text is consistent and fluent but lacks the personal touch of naturally written text. For example, “Dear Health Enthusiast”, we don’t know any company that would address their customers like this. 

“Our gluten-free health products” and “From wholesome gluten-free snacks to nourishing supplements, we've got everything you need to support your healthy lifestyle” are vague statements that don’t provide much information. The text reads like a cheesy TV infomercial that’s impersonal and downright cringe-worthy.

“Indulge in guilt-free treats, discover new flavours, and explore a wide array of natural, gluten-free options without breaking the bank. It's our way of making your health journey more affordable and enjoyable. Hurry, stock up on your favourites, and embrace a healthier you with a shopping experience that's light on your wallet, but rich in benefits.”  These three sentences are redundant (repeat the same information). This usually happens when ChatGPT isn’t given specific instructions, so it’s using “fillers” to bulk out the text.

Example 5 — A more specific input 

For the first few examples, we kept the brief simple and vague. Even so, as you may know, ChatGPT’s output is only as good as the input. In other words, give the chatbot more in-depth details, and it should produce better quality content. Let’s give it a go.

There are a lot of redundant and complex sentences in the output. Also, “Dive in now and let your developer dreams take flight.” Perhaps this sentence would make sense if WeAreDevelopers were an aviation school.

For some reason, nouns like journey, embark, and realm are favoured by AI chatbots. So unless you’re reading about a group of diverse beings uniting to destroy a powerful ring, you should assume the content is AI-written if you see these words.

Is there a ChatGPT detector?

If you’re still unsure how to detect ChatGPT writing, there are AI detectors on the market which claim to discern whether your text is human or AI-generated - AI detecting AI, oh, the irony. 

However, these AI detectors have been known to provide false positives. For example, one software claimed that The Constitution of the United States was written by AI .  

Most AI-detecting software also only claims to be 98% accurate. If that’s true, that still means one in 50 inputs may still be flagged as being AI-written, even if it’s not. 

So, to further prove the inaccuracy of AI detectors, we tested one by copying the first sentence of this article. The results: (*facepalm)

Quick way to detect ChatGPT

To detect ChatGPT writing, look for the telltale signs, such as:

• Hallucinations and made-up facts
• Unusually formal tone in text that’s meant to be conversational or casual
• Overly complex sentence structures
• Unusual or incorrect wording
• Text that’s unnecessarily long and wordy 
• Lack of credible sources
• Repetitive words or phrases
• Redundant sentences
• Lack of personal touch 
• Vague statements that don’t provide much information
• Nouns like journey, embark, and realm

And remember, relying solely on AI detectors could lead to wrongly accusing people, so be cautious and use more than one way to verify before taking any action. Also, you should really think if you need to call out the use of chatbots. Because it’s not necessarily a problem to use them.

OpenAI's new tool may help you identify text written by ChatGPT

But it can “mislabel both ai-generated and human-written text.”.

OpenAI has released a tool to help you determine whether text was more likely written by a human or AI. However, the ChatGPT maker warns that its equivalent of Blade Runner ’s Voight-Kampff test can also get it wrong.

The tool includes a box where you can paste text that’s at least 1,000 characters long. It will then spit out a verdict, like “The classifier considers the text to be very unlikely AI-generated” or “The classifier considers the text to be possibly AI-generated.”

I tested it by prompting ChatGPT to write an essay about the migratory patterns of birds, which the detection tool then described as “possibly AI-generated.” Meanwhile, it rated several human-written articles as “very unlikely AI-generated.” So although the tool could raise false flags in either direction, my (tiny sample size) test suggests at least a degree of accuracy. Still, OpenAI cautions not to use the tool alone to determine content’s authenticity; it also works best with text of 1,000 words or longer.

The startup has faced pressure from educators after the November release of its ChatGPT tool, which produces AI-written content that can sometimes pass for human writing. The natural-language model can create essays in seconds based on simple text prompts — even passing a graduate business and law exam — while providing students with a tempting new cheating opportunity. As a result, New York public schools banned the bot from their WiFi networks and school devices.

While ChatGPT’s arrival has been a buzzed-about topic of late, even extending into media outlets eager to automate SEO-friendly articles , the bot is big business for OpenAI. The company reportedly secured a $10 billion investment earlier this month from Microsoft, which plans to integrate it into Bing and Office 365. OpenAI allegedly discussed selling shares at a $29 billion valuation late last year, which would make it one of the most valuable US startups.

Although ChatGPT is currently the best publicly available natural language AI model, Google, Baidu and others are working on competitors. Google’s LaMDA is convincing enough that one former researcher threw away his job with the search giant last year by claiming the chatbot is sentient. (The human tendency to project feelings and consciousness onto algorithms is a concept we’ll likely hear much about in the coming years.) Google has only released extremely constricted versions of its chatbot in a beta, presumably out of ethical concerns. With the genie out of the bottle, it will be interesting to see how long that restraint lasts.

A new app can detect whether your essay was written by ChatGPT, as researchers look to combat AI plagiarism.

Edward Tian, a computer science student at Princeton, said he spent the holiday period building GPTZero.

He shared two videos comparing the app's analysis of a New Yorker article and a letter written by ChatGPT. It correctly identified that they were respectively written by a human and AI.

GPTZero scores text on its "perplexity and burstiness" – referring to how complicated it is and how randomly it is written. 

The app was so popular that it crashed "due to unexpectedly high web traffic," and currently displays a beta-signup page . GPTZero is still available to use on Tian's Streamlit page, after the website hosts stepped in to increase its capacity.

Tian, a former data journalist with the BBC, said that he was motivated to build GPTZero after seeing increased instances of AI plagiarism.

"Are high school teachers going to want students using ChatGPT to write their history essays? Likely not," he tweeted.

The Guardian recently reported that ChatGPT is introducing its own system to combat plagiarism by making it easier to identify, and watermarking the bot's output.

That follows The New York Times' report that Google issued a "code red" alert over the AI's popularity.  

Insider's Beatrice Nolan also tested ChatGPT to write cover letters for job applications , with one hiring manager saying she'd have got an interview, though another said the letter lacked personality.

Tian added that he's planning to publish a paper with accuracy stats using student journalism articles as data, alongside Princeton's Natural Language Processing group. 

OpenAI and Tian didn't immediately respond to Insider's request for comment, sent outside US working hours. 

Axel Springer, Business Insider's parent company, has a global deal to allow OpenAI to train its models on its media brands' reporting.

ChatGPT has taken the world by storm in a very short period of time, as users continue to test the boundaries of what the AI chatbot can accomplish. And so far, that's a lot. 

Some of it is negative, of course: for instance Samsung workers accidentally leaking top-secret data while using ChatGPT , or the AI chatbot being used for malware scams . Plagiarism is also rampant, with the use of ChatGPT for writing college essays a potential problem.

However, while ChatGPT can and has been used for wrongdoing, to the point where the Future of Life Institution released an open letter calling for the temporary halt of OpenAI system work , AI isn’t all bad. Far from it.

For a start, anyone who writes something may well have used AI to enhance their work already. The most common applications, of course, are the grammar and spelling correction tools found in everything from email applications to word processors. But there are a growing number of other examples of how AI can be used for writing. So, how do you bridge the gap between using AI as the tool it is, without crossing over into plagiarism city?

In fact, there are many ways ChatGPT can be used to enhance your skills, particularly when it comes to researching, developing, and organizing ideas and information for creative writing. By using AI as it was intended - as a tool, not a crutch - it can enrich your writing in ways that help to better your craft, without resorting to it doing everything for you. 

Below, we've listed some of our favorite ways to use ChatGPT and similar AI chatbots for writing. 

A key part of any writing task is the research, and thanks to the internet that chore has never been easier to accomplish. However, while finding the general sources you need is far less time-consuming than it once was, actually parsing all that information is still the same slog it’s always been. But this is where ChatGPT comes in. You can use the AI bot to do the manual labor for you and then reap the benefits of having tons of data to use for your work.

The steps are slightly different, depending on whether you want an article or book summarized . 

For the article, there are two ways to have ChatGPT summarize it. The first requires you to type in the words ‘TLDR:’ and then paste the article’s URL next to it. The second method is a bit more tedious, but increases the accuracy of your summary. For that, you’ll need to copy and paste the article itself into the prompt . 

Summarizing a book is much easier, as long as it was published before 2021. Simply type into the prompt ‘summarize [book title]’ and it should do the rest for you.

This should go without saying, but for any articles or books, make sure you read the source material first before using any information presented to you. While ChatGPT is an incredibly useful tool that can create resources meant for future reference, it’s not a perfect one and is subject to accidentally inserting misinformation into anything it gives you.

One of the most extensive and important tasks when crafting your creative work is to properly flesh out the world your characters occupy. Even for works set in a regular modern setting, it can take plenty of effort to research the various cultures, landmarks, languages, and neighborhoods your characters live in and encounter. 

Now, imagine stories that require their own unique setting, and how much more work that entails in terms of creating those same details from scratch. While it’s vital that the main ideas come from you, using ChatGPT can be a great way to streamline the process, especially with more tedious details.

For instance, if you need certain fictional words without wanting to create an entirely fictional language, you can prompt ChatGPT with the following : “Create a language including an alphabet, phonetics, grammar, and the most common 100 words. Base it on [insert real-life languages here]” and it will give you some good starting points. However, it’s imperative that you take these words and look them up, to ensure you aren’t appropriating sensitive terms or using offensive real-life words.

Another example is useful for those who write scenarios for games, especially tabletop games such as Dungeons & Dragons or Call of Cthulhu . Dungeon Masters (who run the games) may often need to create documents or other fake materials for their world, but doing so takes a lot of time and effort. Now, they can prompt ChatGPT to quickly create filler text that sounds interesting or authentic but is inherently useless; it's essentially like ' Lorem Ipsum ' text, but more immersive.

When writing a story, many people will use an outline to ensure they stay on track and that the narrative flows well. But actually sitting down and organizing everything in your head in order to create a cohesive reference is a lot more daunting than it seems. It’s one of those steps that can be crucial to a well-structured work of fiction, but it can also become a hurdle. This is another area where ChatGPT can come in handy.

The key to writing an effective outline is remembering that you don’t need to have all the answers first. It’s there to structure your content, by helping you hit critical points and not miss important details in the process. While there are AI generators with a more specific focus on this topic, ChatGPT will do a good job at taking a general prompt and returning points for you to keep in mind while you research and write around that topic.

For instance, I prompted ChatGPT with “I want to write a story about a black woman in 16th century England” and it gave me a well-thought-out series of steps to help me create a story that would reflect my topic. An outline such as this would be particularly useful for those needing a resource they can quickly turn to for inspiration when writing. After that, you can begin to develop more complex ideas and have the AI organize those specifics into much easier-to-follow steps.

What makes any great story are the characters that inhabit it. Writing strong, fleshed-out characters is the cornerstone of any creative work and, naturally, the process of creating such a character can be difficult. Their background, manner of speech, goals, dreams, look, and more must be carefully considered and planned out. And this is another aspect of writing that ChatGPT can aid with, if you know how to go about it.

A basic way to use ChatGPT in this regard is to have it generate possible characters that could populate whatever setting you’re writing for. For example, I prompted it with “Provide some ideas for characters set in 1920s Harlem” and it gave me a full list of people with varied and distinctive backstories to use as a jumping-off point. Each character is described with a single sentence, enough to help start the process of creating them, but still leaving the crux of developing them up to me.

One of the most interesting features of ChatGPT is that you can flat-out roleplay with a character, whether they're a historical figure or one that you created but need help fleshing out. Take that same character you just created and have a conversation with them by asking them questions on their history, family life, profession, etc. Based on my previous results, I prompted with “Pretend to be a jazz musician from 1920s Harlem. Let's have a conversation.” I then asked questions from there, basing them on prior answers. Of course, from there you need to parse through these responses to filter out unnecessary or inaccurate details, while fleshing out what works for your story, but it does provide you with a useful stepping stone.

If you’re having issues getting the results you want, the problem could be with how you’re phrasing those questions or prompts in the first place. We've got a full guide to how to improve your ChatGPT prompts and responses , but here are a few of the best options:

• Specify the direction you want the AI to go, by adding in relevant details 
• Prompt from a specific role to guide the responses in the proper direction
• Make sure your prompts are free of typos and grammatical errors
• Keep your tone conversational, as that’s how ChatGPT was built
• Learn from yours and its mistakes to make it a better tool
• Break up your conversations into 500 words or less, as that’s when the AI begins to break down and go off topic
• If you need something clarified, ask the AI based on its last response
• Ask it to cite sources and then check those sources
• Sometimes it’s best to start fresh with a brand new conversation

It’s tempting, isn’t it? You’ve read about and probably also witnessed how quickly ChatGPT can knock up text, seemingly in any genre or style and of any length, in less time than it takes you to make a cup of tea. However, getting ChatGPT to write your essay for you would be plagiarism . Universities and colleges are alive to the issue, and you may face serious academic penalties if you’re found to have used AI in that way.

So that’s that, right? Not necessarily.

This post is not about how to get ChatGPT to write your essay . It’s about how you can use the tool to help yourself write an essay .

What Is ChatGPT?

Let’s start with the basics. ChatGPT is one of several chatbots that can answer questions in a conversational style, as if the answer were coming from a human. It provides answers based on information it receives in development and in response to prompts you provide.

In that respect, like a human, ChatGPT is limited by the information it has. Where it lacks the information, it has a tendency to fill the gaps regardless . This action is dangerous if you’re relying on the accuracy of the information, and it’s another good reason you should not get ChatGPT to write your essay for you.

How Can You Use ChatGPT to Help With Your Essay?

Forget about the much talked-about writing skills of ChatGPT – writing is your thing here. Instead, think of ChatGPT as your assistant. Here are some ideas for how you can make it work for you.

Essay Prompts

If your task is to come up with your own essay topic but you find yourself staring at a blank page, you can use ChatGPT for inspiration. Your prompt could look something like this:

ChatGPT can offer several ideas. The choice of which one to write about (and you may, of course, still come up with one of your own) will be up to you, based on what interests you and the topic’s potential for in-depth analysis.

Essay Outlines

Having decided on your essay topic – or perhaps you’ve already been given one by your instructor – you may be struggling to figure out how to structure the essay. You can use ChatGPT to suggest an outline. Your prompt can be along these lines:

Just as you should not use ChatGPT to write an essay for you, you should not use it to research one – that’s your job.

If, however, you’re struggling to understand a particular extract, you can ask ChatGPT to summarize it or explain it in simpler terms.

The advantage of doing this is that, in going on to locate and read the suggested resources, you will have checked that they exist and that the content is relevant and accurately set out in your essay.

Referencing

Even reading the word above has probably made you groan. As if writing the essay isn’t hard enough, you then have to not only list all the sources you used, but also make sure that you’ve formatted them in a particular style. Here’s where you can use ChatGPT. We have a separate post dealing specifically with this topic, but in brief, you can ask something like this:

Where information is missing, as in the example above, ChatGPT will likely fill in the gaps. In such cases, you’ll have to ensure that the information it fills in is correct.

Proofreading

After finishing the writing and referencing, you’d be well advised to proofread your work, but you’re not always the best person to do so – you’d be tired and would likely read only what you expect to see. At least as a first step, you can copy and paste your essay into ChatGPT and ask it something like this:

Some writers have declared that the debut of ChatGPT on November 30th, 2022, marked the beginning of a new chapter in history akin to the Enlightenment and the Industrial Revolution . Others have been more skeptical , wondering if this is just another overhyped tech, like blockchain or the metaverse .

What history will call ChatGPT remains to be seen, but here’s one thing I do know for sure: nobody has shut up about it since.

From injecting itself into presidential debates and Saturday Night Live sketches to creepily flirting with talking to you Her -style (well, briefly at least ), ChatGPT has captured the public imagination in a way few technologies have. It’s not hard to see why. The bot can code, compose music, craft essays... you name it. And with the release of GPT-4o , it’s even better than ever.

Yet, as it gets smarter, the tech is also becoming less comprehensible. People are also getting more scared of what it can do, which is understandable given some are already losing their jobs to AI. It doesn’t help that a lot of sensationalism surrounds the subject, making it difficult to separate fact from fiction.

What is ChatGPT?

The easy answer is that ChatGPT is a chatbot that can answer your questions by using data it’s gathered from the internet.

The complex answer is that ChatGPT is an AI chatbot powered by language models created by OpenAI that are known as generative pre-trained transformers (GPTs), a kind of AI that can actually generate new content altogether as opposed to just analyzing data. (If you’ve heard of large language models, or LLMs, a GPT is a type of LLM. So what’s OpenAI?

OpenAI is an AI company founded in December 2015. It created ChatGPT, but it’s also responsible for other products, like the AI image generator DALL-E .

Doesn’t Microsoft own it? Or was that Elon Musk?

No, but Microsoft is a major investor , pouring billions into the tech. Elon Musk co-founded OpenAI along with fired and rehired OpenAI CEO Sam Altman , Ilya Sutskever (who has since left), Greg Brockman, Wojciech Zaremba, and John Schulman. However, Musk eventually cut ties to create his own chatbot called Grok .

So, will ChatGPT take over the world?

It will most definitely replace people with machines and — along with other AI bots like Amazon’s Alexa — basically take over the world. So you’d better start playing nice with them.

Nah, I’m messing with you. I mean, nobody knows for sure, but I highly doubt we’re going to see a job apocalypse and have to welcome in our new robot overlords anytime soon. I’ll explain more in a minute. 

Phew! But how is it so smart?

Well, like I said, ChatGPT runs on GPTs, which OpenAI regularly updates with new versions, the most recent being GPT-4o. Trained by humans and a ton of internet data, each model can generate human-like conversations so you can complete all kinds of tasks.  

Where do I begin? The possibilities are practically endless, from composing essays and writing code to analyzing data, solving math problems, playing games, providing customer support, planning trips, helping you prepare for job interviews, and so much more.

Here’s just a short list of what it’s capable of: 

• Passing MBA exams
• Being your girlfriend
• Writing really uncreative TV scripts
• Helping with medical diagnoses
• Explaining complex scientific concepts
• Drafting college essays
• Advertising Coke (the soda)

I mean, honestly, it could probably summarize this entire explainer. The AI world is your oyster.

So what you’re saying is, it’s basically smarter than me. Should I be worried?

Eh, not really. For all its hype, at its current level, ChatGPT — like other generative AI chatbots — is very much a dim-witted computer that sits on a throne of lies. For one thing, it hallucinates. 

Oh, sorry, not that kind of hallucination. Hallucination in the AI world refers to an AI-generated process in which the tool tries to extrapolate and create from collected data but gets it absurdly wrong, in turn creating a new reality. 

Honestly, I’m not a big fan of the word. It doesn’t really bear resemblance to actual human hallucinations , and I think it makes light of mental health issues — but that’s another subject. 

In other words, sometimes ChatGPT generates incorrect information? 

Incorrect information is a weak way of putting it. 

Sometimes ChatGPT actually fabricates facts altogether, which can lead to the spread of misinformation with serious consequences. It’s made up news stories , academic papers , and books . Lawyers using it for case research have gotten in trouble when it cited nonexistent laws .

And then, there are times when it gives the middle finger to both reality and human language and just spouts out pure gibberish. Earlier this year, for example, a malfunctioning ChatGPT that was asked for a Jackson family biography started saying stuff like , “Schwittendly, the sparkle of tourmar on the crest has as much to do with the golver of the ‘moon paths’ as it shifts from follow.” Which is probably the worst description of Michael Jackson’s family in the world.

Right, but isn’t ChatGPT getting better?

Maybe. Maybe not.

Many AI researchers are trying to fix this issue. However, a lot of AI researchers think hallucinations are fundamentally unsolvable, as a study out of the National University of Singapore suggests. 

But hallucinations aren’t the only issue ChatGPT needs to iron out. Remember, ChatGPT essentially just regurgitates material it scrapes off the internet, whether it’s accurate or not. That means, sometimes, ChatGPT plagiarizes other people’s work without attributing it to them, even sparking copyright infringement lawsuits .

It can also pick up some really bad data. Likely drawing from the more unpleasant parts of the internet, it’s gone so far as to insult and manipulate users . Hell, sometimes it’s just downright racist and sexist .

So, basically, what I’m hearing is ChatGPT — like other generative AI chatbots — has a lot of critical flaws, and we humans are still needed to keep them in check. 

But isn’t it possible openai could iron out these issues in time.

Anything’s possible. But I would say that one thing is for sure: AI is here to stay, and so it wouldn’t hurt to learn how to leverage these tools. Plus, they really can make life easier in the here and now if you know how to use them. 

So, how do I start playing around with it?

If you’re on a desktop, simply visit chat.openai.com and start chatting away. Alternatively, you can also access ChatGPT via an app on your iPhone or Android device.

Great! Is it free?

Absolutely. The free version of ChatGPT runs on an older model in the GPT-3.5 series but does offer limited access to the newer and faster GPT-4o. That means free users, for example, will soon be able to access previously paywalled features, like custom GPTs, through the GPT Store .

ChatGPT also now freely supports the chatbot’s web browsing tool, meaning it can now search the internet in real time to deliver up-to-date, accurate results. The new model can also recall earlier conversations, allowing it to better understand the context of your request, while users can now upload photos and files for ChatGPT to analyze.

Why would I want one of the paid tiers?

You do get more advanced capabilities through its paid tiers — ChatGPT Plus, ChatGPT Team, and ChatGPT Enterprise — which start at $20 a month. 

For starters, you have fewer usage restrictions, rendering them the better option if you plan on using ChatGPT often. Free users have usage limits OpenAI has yet to specify but has said that Plus subscribers are allowed to send five times as many messages as free users. The pricier Team and Enterprise subscription plans offer even fewer usage restrictions, though at this point, OpenAI has yet to divulge specifics.

Aside from being able to use ChatGPT longer, paid subscribers can do more. They can, for example, create their own custom GPTs and even monetize them via the GPT Store . Plus, only paid subscribers can access the DALL-E 3 model, which generates images from text prompts. 

Paid subscribers also get early access to the newest AI features. The voice capabilities OpenAI demonstrated onstage should arrive over the next couple of weeks for Plus subscribers, while ChatGPT’s desktop app for Mac computers is already rolling out for Plus users.

Custom GPTs?

Custom GPTs are basically chatbots you can customize. There are millions of versions on the GPT Store that you can use to accomplish all kinds of tasks, from providing tech support to personalized hiking trail recommendations . Some customized GPTs currently trending include an image generating bot , a bot that makes logos , and a chatbot that helps people perform scientific research .

Are there any ChatGPT alternatives I could check out?

Yes, there are quite a few, and each varies in terms of features, pricing, and specific use cases. One notable example is Google’s AI chat service Gemini. As a Google product, it offers deeper integration with Google services like Workspace, Calendar, Gmail, Search, YouTube, and Flights. The latest version, Gemini 1.5 Pro, also offers a longer 2 million token context window , which refers to the amount of information the AI model can understand.

Anything else you think I should know? 

Yeah! Did you know ChatGPT sounds like “chat j’ai pété” in French, which roughly translates to “cat, I farted.” Somebody even created a website with a cat who farts when you click on it , and I just can’t stop clicking.

ChatGPT, OpenAI’s text-generating AI chatbot, has taken the world by storm. What started as a tool to hyper-charge productivity through writing essays and code with short text prompts has evolved into a behemoth used by more than 92% of Fortune 500 companies for more wide-ranging needs. And that growth has propelled OpenAI itself into becoming one of the most-hyped companies in recent memory, even if CEO and co-founder Sam Altman’s firing and swift return  raised concerns about its direction and opened the door for competitors.

What does that mean for OpenAI, ChatGPT and its other ambitions? The fallout is still settling, but it might empower competitors like Meta and its LLaMA family of large language models , or help other AI startups get attention and funding as the industry watches OpenAI implode and put itself back together.

While there is a more… nefarious side to ChatGPT, it’s clear that AI tools are not going away anytime soon. Since its initial launch nearly a year ago, ChatGPT has hit 100 million weekly active users , and OpenAI is heavily investing in it.

Prior to the leadership chaos, on November 6, OpenAI held its first developer conference: OpenAI DevDay. During the conference, it announced a slew of updates coming to GPT, including GPT-4 Turbo (a super-charged version of GPT-4 , its latest language-writing model) and a multimodal API . OpenAI also unveiled the GPT store , where users could create and monetize their own custom versions of GPT. Though the launch was delayed in December , it officially launched in January.

GPT-4, which can write more naturally and fluently than previous models, remains largely exclusive to paying ChatGPT users. But you can access GPT-4 for free through Microsoft’s Bing Chat in Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome and Safari web browsers. Beyond GPT-4 and OpenAI DevDay announcements, OpenAI recently connected ChatGPT to the internet for all users. And with the integration of DALL-E 3, users are also able to generate both text prompts and images right in ChatGPT.

ChatGPT’s mobile app revenue saw biggest spike yet following GPT-4o launch

The launch of GPT-4o has driven the company’s biggest-ever spike in revenue on mobile , despite the model being freely available on the web. Mobile users are being pushed to upgrade to its $19.99 monthly subscription, ChatGPT Plus, if they want to experiment with OpenAI’s most recent launch.

OpenAI to remove ChatGPT’s Scarlett Johansson-like voice

After demoing its new GPT-4o model last week, OpenAI announced it is pausing one of its voices , Sky, after users found that it sounded similar to Scarlett Johansson in “Her.”

ChatGPT lets you add files from Google Drive and Microsoft OneDrive

OpenAI announced new updates for easier data analysis within ChatGPT . Users can now upload files directly from Google Drive and Microsoft OneDrive, interact with tables and charts, and export customized charts for presentations. The company says these improvements will be added to GPT-4o in the coming weeks.

OpenAI inks deal to train AI on Reddit data

OpenAI announced a partnership with Reddit that will give the company access to “real-time, structured and unique content” from the social network. Content from Reddit will be incorporated into ChatGPT, and the companies will work together to bring new AI-powered features to Reddit users and moderators.

OpenAI debuts GPT-4o “omni” model now powering ChatGPT

OpenAI’s spring update event saw the reveal of its new omni model, GPT-4o, which has a black hole-like interface , as well as voice and vision capabilities that feel eerily like something out of “Her.” GPT-4o is set to roll out “iteratively” across its developer and consumer-facing products over the next few weeks.

OpenAI to build a tool that lets content creators opt out of AI training

The company announced it’s building a tool, Media Manager, that will allow creators to better control how their content is being used to train generative AI models — and give them an option to opt out. The goal is to have the new tool in place and ready to use by 2025.

In a new peek behind the curtain of its AI’s secret instructions , OpenAI also released a new NSFW policy . OpenAI and Stack Overflow announce partnership

In a new partnership, OpenAI will get access to developer platform Stack Overflow’s API and will get feedback from developers to improve the performance of their AI models. In return, OpenAI will include attributions to Stack Overflow in ChatGPT. However, the deal was not favorable to some Stack Overflow users — leading to some sabotaging their answer in protest .

U.S. newspapers file copyright lawsuit against OpenAI and Microsoft

Alden Global Capital-owned newspapers, including the New York Daily News, the Chicago Tribune, and the Denver Post, are suing OpenAI and Microsoft for copyright infringement. The lawsuit alleges that the companies stole millions of copyrighted articles “without permission and without payment” to bolster ChatGPT and Copilot.

OpenAI inks content licensing deal with Financial Times

ChatGPT no longer requires an account — but there’s a catch

You can now use ChatGPT without signing up for an account , but it won’t be quite the same experience. You won’t be able to save or share chats, use custom instructions, or other features associated with a persistent account. This version of ChatGPT will have “slightly more restrictive content policies,” according to OpenAI. When TechCrunch asked for more details, however, the response was unclear:

“The signed out experience will benefit from the existing safety mitigations that are already built into the model, such as refusing to generate harmful content. In addition to these existing mitigations, we are also implementing additional safeguards specifically designed to address other forms of content that may be inappropriate for a signed out experience,” a spokesperson said.

OpenAI’s chatbot store is filling up with spam

TechCrunch found that the OpenAI’s GPT Store is flooded with bizarre, potentially copyright-infringing GPTs . A cursory search pulls up GPTs that claim to generate art in the style of Disney and Marvel properties, but serve as little more than funnels to third-party paid services and advertise themselves as being able to bypass AI content detection tools.

The New York Times responds to OpenAI’s claims that it “hacked” ChatGPT for its copyright lawsuit

ChatGPT can now read its answers aloud

OpenAI released a new Read Aloud feature for the web version of ChatGPT as well as the iOS and Android apps. A law firm used ChatGPT to justify a six-figure bill for legal services

New York-based law firm Cuddy Law was criticized by a judge for using ChatGPT to calculate their hourly billing rate . The firm submitted a $113,500 bill to the court, which was then halved by District Judge Paul Engelmayer, who called the figure “well above” reasonable demands.

ChatGPT experienced a bizarre bug for several hours

ChatGPT users found that ChatGPT was giving nonsensical answers for several hours , prompting OpenAI to investigate the issue. Incidents varied from repetitive phrases to confusing and incorrect answers to queries. The issue was resolved by OpenAI the following morning.

OpenAI begins rolling out “Temporary Chat” feature

Initially limited to a small subset of free and subscription users, Temporary Chat lets you have a dialogue with a blank slate. With Temporary Chat, ChatGPT won’t be aware of previous conversations or access memories but will follow custom instructions if they’re enabled.

But, OpenAI says it may keep a copy of Temporary Chat conversations for up to 30 days for “safety reasons.”

ChatGPT users can now invoke GPTs directly in chats

Paid users of ChatGPT can now bring GPTs into a conversation by typing “@” and selecting a GPT from the list. The chosen GPT will have an understanding of the full conversation, and different GPTs can be “tagged in” for different use cases and needs.

Screenshots provided to Ars Technica found that ChatGPT is potentially leaking unpublished research papers, login credentials and private information from its users. An OpenAI representative told Ars Technica that the company was investigating the report.

OpenAI responds to Congressional Black Caucus about lack of diversity on its board

After a letter from the Congressional Black Caucus questioned the lack of diversity in OpenAI’s board, the company responded . The response, signed by CEO Sam Altman and Chairman of the Board Bret Taylor, said building a complete and diverse board was one of the company’s top priorities and that it was working with an executive search firm to assist it in finding talent. 

OpenAI drops prices and fixes ‘lazy’ GPT-4 that refused to work

In a blog post , OpenAI announced price drops for GPT-3.5’s API, with input prices dropping to 50% and output by 25%, to $0.0005 per thousand tokens in, and $0.0015 per thousand tokens out. GPT-4 Turbo also got a new preview model for API use, which includes an interesting fix that aims to reduce “laziness” that users have experienced.

OpenAI has suspended AI startup Delphi, which developed a bot impersonating Rep. Dean Phillips (D-Minn.) to help bolster his presidential campaign. OpenAI is forming a Collective Alignment team of researchers and engineers to create a system for collecting and “encoding” public input on its models’ behaviors into OpenAI products and services. OpenAI unveils plan to combat election misinformation

In a blog post, OpenAI announced users will not be allowed to build applications for political campaigning and lobbying until the company works out how effective their tools are for “personalized persuasion.”

Users will also be banned from creating chatbots that impersonate candidates or government institutions, and from using OpenAI tools to misrepresent the voting process or otherwise discourage voting.

The company is also testing out a tool that detects DALL-E generated images and will incorporate access to real-time news, with attribution, in ChatGPT.

After being delayed in December , OpenAI plans to launch its GPT Store sometime in the coming week, according to an email viewed by TechCrunch. China requires AI apps to obtain an administrative license

Multiple generative AI apps have been removed from Apple’s China App Store ahead of the country’s latest generative AI regulations that are set to take effect August 15.

“As you may know, the government has been tightening regulations associated with deep synthesis technologies (DST) and generative AI services, including ChatGPT. DST must fulfill permitting requirements to operate in China, including securing a license from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT),” Apple said in a letter to OpenCat, a native ChatGPT client. “Based on our review, your app is associated with ChatGPT, which does not have requisite permits to operate in China.”

OpenAI launches customized instructions for ChatGPT

OpenAI launched custom instructions for ChatGPT users , so they don’t have to write the same instruction prompts to the chatbot every time they interact with it.

The company said this feature lets you “share anything you’d like ChatGPT to consider in its response.” For example, a teacher can say they are teaching fourth-grade math or a developer can specify the code language they prefer when asking for suggestions. A person can also specify their family size, so the text-generating AI can give responses about meals, grocery and vacation planning accordingly.

The FTC is reportedly investigating OpenAI

The FTC is reportedly in at least the exploratory phase of investigation over whether OpenAI’s flagship ChatGPT conversational AI made “false, misleading, disparaging or harmful” statements about people.

This kind of investigation doesn’t just appear out of thin air — the FTC doesn’t look around and say “That looks suspicious.” Generally a lawsuit or formal complaint is brought to their attention and the practices described by it imply that regulations are being ignored. For example, a person may sue a supplement company because the pills made them sick, and the FTC will launch an investigation on the back of that because there’s evidence the company lied about the side effects.

OpenAI announced the general availability of GPT-4

Starting July 6, all existing OpenAI developers “with a history of successful payments” can access GPT-4 . OpenAI plans to open up access to new developers by the end of July.

In the future, OpenAI says that it’ll allow developers to fine-tune GPT-4 and  GPT-3.5 Turbo , one of the original models powering ChatGPT, with their own data, as has long been possible with several of OpenAI’s other text-generating models. That capability should arrive later this year, according to OpenAI.

OpenAI announced that subscribers to ChatGPT Plus can now use a new feature on the app called Browsing , which allows ChatGPT to search Bing for answers to questions.

The Browsing feature can be enabled by heading to the New Features section of the app settings, selecting “GPT-4” in the model switcher and choosing “Browse with Bing” from the drop-down list. Browsing is available on both the iOS and Android ChatGPT apps.

When using the mobile version of ChatGPT, the app will sync your history across devices — meaning it will know what you’ve previously searched for via its web interface, and make that accessible to you. Hackers are using ChatGPT lures to spread malware on Facebook

Meta said in a report on May 3 that malware posing as ChatGPT was on the rise across its platforms . The company said that since March 2023, its security teams have uncovered 10 malware families using ChatGPT (and similar themes) to deliver malicious software to users’ devices.

“In one case, we’ve seen threat actors create malicious browser extensions available in official web stores that claim to offer ChatGPT-based tools,” said Meta security engineers Duc H. Nguyen and Ryan Victory in  a blog post . “They would then promote these malicious extensions on social media and through sponsored search results to trick people into downloading malware.”

ChatGPT parent company OpenAI closes $300M share sale at $27B-29B valuation

VC firms including Sequoia Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, Thrive and K2 Global are picking up new shares, according to documents seen by TechCrunch. A source tells us Founders Fund is also investing. Altogether the VCs have put in just over $300 million at a valuation of $27 billion to $29 billion . This is separate to a big investment from Microsoft announced earlier this year , a person familiar with the development told TechCrunch, which closed in January. The size of Microsoft’s investment is believed to be around $10 billion, a figure we confirmed with our source.

OpenAI previews new subscription tier, ChatGPT Business

Called ChatGPT Business, OpenAI describes the forthcoming offering as “for professionals who need more control over their data as well as enterprises seeking to manage their end users.”

“ChatGPT Business will follow our API’s data usage policies, which means that end users’ data won’t be used to train our models by default,” OpenAI  wrote in a blog post. “We plan to make ChatGPT Business available in the coming months.”

OpenAI wants to trademark “GPT”

OpenAI applied for a trademark for “GPT,” which stands for “Generative Pre-trained Transformer,” last December. Last month, the company petitioned the USPTO to speed up the process, citing the “myriad infringements and counterfeit apps” beginning to spring into existence.

Unfortunately for OpenAI, its petition was  dismissed  last week. According to the agency, OpenAI’s attorneys neglected to pay an associated fee as well as provide “appropriate documentary evidence supporting the justification of special action.”

That means a decision could take up to five more months.

Auto-GPT is Silicon Valley’s latest quest to automate everything

Auto-GPT is an open-source app created by game developer Toran Bruce Richards that uses OpenAI’s latest text-generating models, GPT-3.5 and GPT-4, to interact with software and services online, allowing it to “autonomously” perform tasks.

Depending on what objective the tool’s provided, Auto-GPT can behave in very… unexpected ways. One Reddit  user  claims that, given a budget of $100 to spend within a server instance, Auto-GPT made a wiki page on cats, exploited a flaw in the instance to gain admin-level access and took over the Python environment in which it was running — and then “killed” itself.

FTC warns that AI technology like ChatGPT could ‘turbocharge’ fraud

FTC chair Lina Khan and fellow commissioners warned House representatives of the potential for modern AI technologies, like ChatGPT, to be used to “turbocharge” fraud in a congressional hearing .

“AI presents a whole set of opportunities, but also presents a whole set of risks,” Khan told the House representatives. “And I think we’ve already seen ways in which it could be used to turbocharge fraud and scams. We’ve been putting market participants on notice that instances in which AI tools are effectively being designed to deceive people can place them on the hook for FTC action,” she stated.

Italy gives OpenAI to-do list for lifting ChatGPT suspension order

Italy’s data protection watchdog has laid out what OpenAI needs to do for it to lift an order against ChatGPT issued at the  end of last month — when it said it suspected the AI chatbot service was in breach of the EU’s GSPR and ordered the U.S.-based company to stop processing locals’ data.

The DPA has given OpenAI a deadline — of April 30 — to get the regulator’s compliance demands done. (The local radio, TV and internet awareness campaign has a slightly more generous timeline of May 15 to be actioned.)

Researchers discover a way to make ChatGPT consistently toxic

A study co-authored by scientists at the Allen Institute for AI shows that assigning ChatGPT a “persona” — for example, “a bad person,” “a horrible person” or “a nasty person” — through the ChatGPT API increases its toxicity sixfold. Even more concerning, the co-authors found having the conversational AI chatbot pose as certain historical figures, gendered people and members of political parties also increased its toxicity — with journalists, men and Republicans in particular causing the machine learning model to say more offensive things than it normally would.

The research was conducted using the latest version, but not the model currently in preview based on OpenAI’s GPT-4 .

Y Combinator-backed startups are trying to build ‘ChatGPT for X’

YC Demo Day’s Winter 2023 batch features no fewer than four startups that claim to be building “ChatGPT for X.” They’re all chasing after a customer service software market that’ll be worth $58.1 billion by 2023, assuming the rather optimistic prediction from Acumen Research comes true.

Here are the YC-backed startups that caught our eye:

• Yuma , whose customer demographic is primarily Shopify merchants, provides ChatGPT-like AI systems that integrate with help desk software, suggesting drafts of replies to customer tickets.
• Baselit , which uses one of OpenAI’s text-understanding models to allow businesses to embed chatbot-style analytics for their customers.
• Lasso customers send descriptions or videos of the processes they’d like to automate and the company combines ChatGPT-like interface with robotic process automation (RPA) and a Chrome extension to build out those automations.
• BerriAI , whose platform is designed to help developers spin up ChatGPT apps for their organization data through various data connectors.

Italy orders ChatGPT to be blocked

OpenAI has started geoblocking access to its generative AI chatbot, ChatGPT, in Italy .

Italy’s data protection authority has just put out a timely reminder that some countries do have laws that already apply to cutting edge AI: it has  ordered OpenAI to stop processing people’s data locally with immediate effect. The Italian DPA said it’s concerned that the ChatGPT maker is breaching the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), and is opening an investigation.

1,100+ signatories signed an open letter asking all ‘AI labs to immediately pause for 6 months’

The letter’s signatories include Elon Musk, Steve Wozniak and Tristan Harris of the Center for Humane Technology, among others. The letter calls on “all AI labs to immediately pause for at least 6 months the training of AI systems more powerful than GPT-4.”

The letter reads:

Contemporary AI systems are now becoming human-competitive at general tasks,[3] and we must ask ourselves: Should we let machines flood our information channels with propaganda and untruth? Should we automate away all the jobs, including the fulfilling ones? Should we develop nonhuman minds that might eventually outnumber, outsmart, obsolete and replace us? Should we risk loss of control of our civilization? Such decisions must not be delegated to unelected tech leaders. Powerful AI systems should be developed only once we are confident that their effects will be positive and their risks will be manageable.

OpenAI connects ChatGPT to the internet

OpenAI launched plugins for ChatGPT, extending the bot’s functionality by granting it access to third-party knowledge sources and databases, including the web. Available in alpha to ChatGPT users and developers on the waitlist , OpenAI says that it’ll initially prioritize a small number of developers and subscribers to its premium ChatGPT Plus plan before rolling out larger-scale and  API  access.

In the following example, ChatGPT got lots of information about the linguistic function of emojis. The intentionally simple prompt asked the chatbot to summarize everything and explain the links between emojis and cultures.

The chatbot merged both answers into one paragraph. A follow-up prompt with clearer instructions asked it to dip into its knowledge pool, too.

This is why you should keep your instructions precise, provide context when necessary, and keep an eye on ChatGPT’s results. If you flag up any mistake immediately, the chatbot can produce something more accurate.

ChatGPT is smart, but it’s not a good idea to bombard it with details about a particular topic without specifying what is or isn’t important.

The problem here is that, without proper instructions, the algorithm will pick and choose what information it considers relevant to the report or list you need.

To test ChatGPT, it was asked to summarize a length of text on must-see Scottish destinations and create an itinerary for a family vacation.

When asked if it omitted details, it admitted that, yes, it left certain information out, such as specific attractions and transportation options. Conciseness was its goal.

If left to its own devices, there’s no guarantee that ChatGPT will use the details you expect. So, plan and phrase your prompts carefully to ensure the chatbot’s summary is spot on.

OpenAI has updated GPT-4o with data available up to October 2023, while GPT-4 Turbo's cut-off is December of the same year. However, the algorithm’s knowledge isn’t infinite or reliable with real-time facts—it doesn’t know everything about the world. Furthermore, it won’t always reveal that it lacks data on a particular subject unless you ask it directly.

When summarizing or enriching text that contains such obscure references, ChatGPT is likely to replace them with alternatives it understands or fabricate their details.

The following example involves a translation into English. ChatGPT didn’t understand the Greek name for the Toque d’Or awards, but instead of highlighting the problem, it just offered a literal and wrong translation.

Company names, books, awards, research links, and other elements can disappear or be altered in the chatbot’s summary. To avoid major mistakes, be aware of ChatGPT’s content creation limits .

It’s important to learn all you can about how to avoid mistakes with generative AI tools . As the example above demonstrates, one of the biggest problems with ChatGPT is that it lacks certain facts or has learned them wrong. This can then affect any text it produces.

If you ask for a summary of various data points that contain facts or concepts unfamiliar to ChatGPT, the algorithm can phrase them badly.

In the example below, the prompt asked ChatGPT to summarize four TikTok trends and explain what each entails.

Most of the explanations were slightly wrong or lacked specifics about what posters must do. The description of the UMG Music trend was especially misleading. The trend changed after the catalogue’s removal from TikTok, and users now post videos to criticize, not support UMG, something which ChatGPT doesn’t know.

The best solution is to not blindly trust AI chatbots with your text. Even if ChatGPT compiled information you provided yourself, make sure you edit everything it produces, check its descriptions and claims, and make a note of any facts it gets wrong. Then, you’ll know how to structure your prompts for the best results.

As much as OpenAI enhances ChatGPT with new features , it still seems to struggle with basic instructions, such as sticking to a specific word or character limit.

The test below shows ChatGPT needing several prompts. It still either fell short or exceeded the word count needed.

It’s not the worst mistake to expect from ChatGPT. But it’s one more factor to consider when proofreading the summaries it creates.

Be specific about how long you want the content to be. You may need to add or delete some words here and there. It’s worth the effort if you’re dealing with projects with strict word count rules.

Generally speaking, ChatGPT is fast, intuitive, and constantly improving, but it still makes mistakes. Unless you want strange references or omissions in your content, don’t completely trust ChatGPT to summarize your text.

The cause usually involves missing or distorted facts in its data pool. Its algorithm is also designed to automatically answer without always checking for accuracy. If ChatGPT owned up to the problems it encountered, its reliability would increase. For now, the best course of action is to develop your own content with ChatGPT as your handy assistant who needs frequent supervision.

As of May, the free version of ChatGPT can get responses from both the GPT-4o model and the web. It will only pull its answer from, and ultimately list, a handful of sources, as opposed to showing nearly endless search results.

For example, I used GPT-4o to answer, "What is the weather today in San Francisco?" The response told me it searched four sites and provided links to them. 

If you are looking for a platform that can explain complex topics in an easy-to-understand manner, then ChatGPT might be what you want. If you want the best of both worlds, there are plenty of AI search engines on the market that combine both.

Despite its impressive capabilities, ChatGPT still has limitations. Users sometimes need to reword questions multiple times for ChatGPT to understand their intent. A bigger limitation is a lack of quality in responses, which can sometimes be plausible-sounding but are verbose or make no practical sense.

Now, not only have many of those schools decided to unblock the technology, but some higher education institutions have been  catering their academic offerings  to AI-related coursework. 

Another concern with AI chatbots is the possible spread of misinformation. ChatGPT itself says: "My responses are not intended to be taken as fact, and I always encourage people to verify any information they receive from me or any other source." OpenAI also notes that ChatGPT sometimes writes "plausible-sounding but incorrect or nonsensical answers."

Lastly, there are ethical concerns regarding the information ChatGPT was trained on, since the startup scraped the internet to train the chatbot. 

It also automatically uses people's interactions with the free version of the chatbot to further train its models, raising privacy concerns. OpenAI lets you turn off training in ChatGPT's settings.

Does ChatGPT plagiarize?

Yes, sort of. OpenAI scraped the internet to train ChatGPT. Therefore, the technology's knowledge is influenced by other people's work. Since there is no guarantee that when OpenAI outputs its answers it is entirely original, the chatbot may regurgitate someone else's work in your answer, which is considered plagiarism. 

Is there a ChatGPT detector?

Concerns about students using AI to cheat mean the need for a ChatGPT text detector is becoming more evident. 

In January 2023, OpenAI released a free tool to target this problem.
