No one wants to contact that guy with the tacky email from high school (We’re looking at you, [email protected]).

Create a professional email address for anything related to your job-search and career. 

Any combination of [first name] and [last name] will do.

If you have a common name and the email is taken, consider using your initials ( e.g. [FirstNameInitial][LastName]@gmail.com ), or even buying your own custom domain name.

2) Double-Check Your Contact Information

Even the most confident writer is not safe from typos.

Make sure that all your contact information on your resume is accurate, both email and phone number.

After all, even if you’re the most qualified person in the world, it’s not going to matter much if the HR manager can’t contact you.

3) Include Phone Number and Country Code

It’s always a good idea to include your phone number in your resume.

Sure, in most cases, the HR manager will reach you on email. But what if the email gets lost, for whatever reason? Or worse - it goes to your spam section.

If you’re applying for a foreign job, you should also include a country code .

For example, if you’re from Denmark and you’re applying to another country, you’d want to include the country code (+45) in front of your number.

4) Mention Achievements Over Job Responsibilities

When listing your work experience , include achievements instead of responsibilities whenever possible.

Chances are, the HR manager already knows what your responsibilities were from your job title. 

Fun fact: your responsibilities are probably literally the same as everyone else's in your profession.

Instead, to stand out, you want to include as many achievements as possible.

Here’s some achievement examples:

  • Exceeded sales KPIs by 25% for 3+ months straight.
  • Generated over $25,000 in sales in 1 month.

Compared to responsibilities:

  • Generated leads through cold calling.
  • Carried out sales operations and managed existing clients.

See the difference? The first example shows that you’re a high achiever. The second shows that you’re a sales manager.

In some fields, though, you might not have any real achievements. If you’re a server, for example, you can’t have “served 200+ people really well” as an achievement.

Make sure that all work experience entries are…

  • Timely - Only mention your last 3-5 positions max. No one cares what job you did 15 years ago.
  • Contextual - Applying for the role of a dentist ? You don’t have to mention that one time you worked as a pre-school math teacher.

If you don’t have a lot of experience in the field (or no experience at all), though, you can include whatever you have. It’s better to have some experience rather than none .

6) Focus On Other Sections If You Have No Experience

What if you’re a student who’s never worked a day in their life?

The good news is that you don’t need work experience to have a good resume.

In fact, for entry-level jobs, the hiring manager doesn’t expect you to have any experience.

  • Coursework - Want to show the HR manager that you have the right know-how, even though you don’t have experience? Mention any relevant courses you took in university.

It’s not just a rumour, they actually are! List your extracurricular activities just as you’d list your work experience, and you’re good to go.

7) Be Super Specific - Add Numbers, Data, and Experiences When Possible

Everything you write in your resume should be very specific .

Back every claim with specific experiences, numbers, or data.

What do we mean by that? Well, compare these 2 examples:

  • Results-oriented sales manager with 5+ years of experience in the fin-tech industry. Driven over $500,000 worth of enterprise software sales at Company X. Deep knowledge of multiple CRM tools, including SalesForce, PipeDrive, HubSpot CRM, and more.
  • Sales manager looking for the next step in their career. Previous experience involves doing sales for several software companies. Deep knowledge of CRM software.

See the difference between the two examples?

The first is very specific, mentioning numbers, data, experiences, etc.

The second, on the other hand, is very generic. The only thing you learn from it is that the candidate does sales.

8) Gap In Your Resume? Explain What Happened

A gap in your resume can be a huge red flag - but only if you don’t address it.

The hiring manager is going to assume the worst by default. So, it’s a good idea to be direct and insert 2-3 sentences acknowledging the gap and explaining what happened.

  • Hiring manager’s contact information.

Nope, no excuses. 95%+ of job-seekers don’t need to go past the one-page limit.

After all, HR managers receive over 1,000+ resumes for each open position. They don’t have the time to read your autobiography.

There are some exclusions to the one-page rule, though. You can go up to 2 pages if:

White space refers to the space in your resume between all the sections and paragraphs of text.

  • Margins - aim for 1-inch margin on all four sides of your resume to maximize white space.

You’ll want your resume section subheadings to be accurate and easy to find.

So, to help the HR manager reading your resume, try to keep things simple.

Bonus Points - this can also help Applicant Tracking Systems read your resume. They recognize “Work Experience,” but not “Work History.”

23) Include Only Relevant Social Media

Wondering if you should include social media links in your resume?

As a rule of thumb, you should only mention the ones that are relevant to your profession and career.

Here’s a brief overview of what you might include:

  • LinkedIn - If your LinkedIn is updated, you can mention it for most professions.
  • Stack Overflow / GitHub - If you’re a software engineer.
  • Medium -Are you a freelance writer or blogger? Include your Medium.
  • Quora - Are you an influencer in your field? Mention your Quora account (as long as you have a decent number of answers).
  • Website/Blog - Do you have an online presence? Maybe a personal blog that positions you as an expert? If so, make sure to mention it.

24) Include Resume Objective or Summary

The hiring manager looks at your resume for 5-6 seconds max to decide if they’re going to read the rest or not.

Use a resume objective or summary.

Both of these sections act as an introduction to your resume, and are used to show that you’re qualified for the job from the get-go (before the HR gets to read the rest of your resume).

So, what’s what?

Both of these sections go in your resume header, right under your contact information section.

A resume objective is mainly for students, or professionals switching their careers. An objective is a 3-4 sentence snapshot of your professional goals and aspirations.

A resume summary is a 3-4 sentence summary of your resume. You use this instead of a resume objective if you’ve previously worked as the position you’re applying for.

  • Multilingual customer service representative looking to provide Company X provide stellar customer experience. Strong communication skills, fluent in English, German, and French. Basic knowledge of CRM systems.
  • Proactive UX designer with 5 years of experience in delivering enjoyable web and mobile products within the FinTech industry. Designed UI/UX and other marketing materials for 6 apps and 3 games at Company X, 2 of which were features in the App store. Skilled with Sketch and Adobe Creative Studio.

25) Don’t Use Personal Pronouns (“I”, “Me”)

Once you put your name at the top of your resume, it’s already implied that everything you mention in your resume applies to you.

So, there is no need to unnecessarily repeat “I did…” in your resume countless times.

26) Consider Optional Resume Sections

Still have extra space to fill within your resume and want to show off your other important qualifications?

You can include some of the following optional sections to help your resume stand out:

  • Hobbies and interests - While this is not a game-changer, they can really help show YOU are as an individual. 
  • Volunteering experience - If you try to help others in your free time, while expecting nothing in return, chances are that you’re the type of employee who’s in it for more than just the money. This can be a huge plus for the HR manager.
  • Certifications and awards  - Do you have any relevant certifications and awards in your field? As long as it’s relevant, feel free to include it.
  • Publications - Are you a freelance writer or a distinguished author? You can include your published works (online, academic journal, etc.) here.
  • Projects - Working on a side project can really show off your passion for your field. Hiring managers love employees who do cool work in their free time.

27) Tailor Your Skills to The Job Position

When scanning your resume, one of the most important things hiring managers look for is whether you have the right skills or not.

They’re not looking for just any skills, either. They’re looking for the skills that are going to help you excel at the job you’re applying for.

So, you need to tailor your skills section for each position you apply for.

You can usually figure out which ones are worth mentioning by scanning the job ad.

As a given, make sure you don’t mention anything that’s not directly related to your job.

For example, no one cares about your Photoshop design skills if you’re applying to work as a cashier.

28) Cut the Fluff

Fluff is way more common than you’d think.

A lot of university students and fresh graduates often fill up their skills section with buzzwords like:

  • Critical thinking
  • Communication

But if you take a step back and think about it, those skills don’t mean anything. You know it, we know it, the HR manager knows it.

Without providing an example, they’re just a waste of space.

Just about everyone is good at “ communication ” - it doesn’t mean anything without experience to back it up.

So, go through your resume again, and think about this: does everything I say provide clear value?

If the answer is “No,” we’d recommend cutting it and replacing it with something more interesting.

29) Proofread With a Tool Like Grammarly

You can’t afford to have any typos on your resume.

There’s nothing more ironic than someone claiming to have an “eye for detail” with a bunch of spelling mistakes in their resume.

So, to be positive that your resume is typo-free, you can use a tool like Grammarly when you’re going over your final edits.

While Microsoft Word and Google Docs do a decent job of detecting errors, it’s always a good idea to have a backup spelling tool just in case.

30) Be Consistent With Section Formatting

Be consistent with your section formatting so that your overall resume is easy on the eyes.

This includes things like:

  • Line spacing.

31) Include Volunteering Experience

You can’t go wrong with volunteering experience.

It’ll make you stand out regardless of your job position or industry. 

If the volunteering experience is somehow related to your career and has some transferable skills, you can even include it in your work experience

32) Include Irrelevant Jobs if You Have No Other Experience

As a general rule, when applying for a job, you only list work experience that’s relevant for the position.

But what if you have none?

In that case, it’s totally OK to mention ANY work experience you might have, even if it’s not relevant for the job you’re applying for.

Look at it this way: the recruiter is more likely to hire someone that's worked A job, rather than a person that's never worked a day in their life.

33) include languages and proficiency.

Most companies are international nowadays, and being bilingual is a great way to gain a competitive advantage.

Even if knowing a foreign language isn’t necessary for the job you’re applying for, it might come in handy at some point in the future.

When listing languages, you should always include your skill level:

  • Intermediate

Oh, and it goes without saying that you shouldn’t lie about your skill levels.

Trust us, you don’t want to end up in a situation where the interviewer is a native Spanish speaker, and you exaggerated your “Proficient Spanish.”

34) Don’t Include “Reference Available Upon Request”

This is another common mistake many people still make.

Having a whole section dedicated to that one phrase is just a waste of space.

Hiring managers know they can always request your list of references - so what’s the point of mentioning it?

35) Don’t Include a Photo (If You’re From the US and UK)

There’s a lot of confusion around photos on resumes .

Some people always use a photo on their resume.

Others believe it’s a strict no-no.

So, which one is it?

It depends on your location.

There are strict anti-discrimination labor laws in some countries, namely:

  • United Kingdom
  • United States

If you’re from one of those countries, don’t include a photo on your resume.

Obviously, there are some exceptions to the rule - such as, if you’re applying for a modelling job.

If you’re from anywhere else in the world, though, you can include a photo.

37) Read Your Resume Out Loud

While it may sound awkward, reading your resume out loud is the best way to spot any awkward phrases or spelling mistakes.

Sure, Grammarly is useful, but it often misses a lot of really obvious mistakes (which the HR manager probably won’t!).

This is going to be monotonous, yes. But it’s the best way to proofread your resume and it also beats any spell checking tools out there.

38) Clean Up Your Online Presence

Imagine this:

The recruiter LOVES your resume.

They’re about to call you in for an interview, but before that, they decide to check up on your online presence.

Big mistake.

The first thing that pops up when they Google your name is your Facebook page, with very embarrassing photos from your last night out.

Not really that appropriate for a Senior Banker.

Want to avoid such awkward situations? Make sure your online presence is working FOR you, not against you:

  • Change your Facebook Privacy setting to “Friends” to make sure random people can’t see your profile.
  • Clean up your Twitter account, make sure you’re not posting anything too scandalous.
  • Google your name and see if you can find anything off. You can ask Google to remove any private sensitive information .

Do you have a LinkedIn profile? You should! It shows the recruiter that you’re serious about your career.

Make sure to optimize your LinkedIn profile so that it complements your resume!

39) Consider Putting Education First

The most important sections of your resume should come first.

Are you a student with very limited work experience?

Consider putting your education section on top of your work experience.

This places a lot more focus on your education career, as opposed to any irrelevant jobs you might have worked.

Of course, if you have worked a job in your field, you’d always want to put work experience on top.

40) Add Your Courses In the Education Section

If your education section is your biggest selling point, then you might want to also add any relevant courses you’ve taken.

As usual, relevance is key here. Applying for a job in finance? The recruiter doesn’t care about the social media course you took in your freshman year.

41) Use DocSend to Track Your Resume

Ever wondered what happens after you send in your application?

Did the HR even read your resume, or did it fall through the cracks?

Ideally, you should strike the right balance of creativity and professionalism.

If you’re applying for a job in a more conservative industry (e.g. finances, banking), a standard black and white theme is fine.

But if you’re applying to work in a creative startup as a web designer or a developer, you can get more creative.

After all, HR managers get a TON of resumes every day, and most of them look exactly the same.

Whenever you can afford to stand out with your resume, you should!

43) Consider Using a Professional Template

Can't Get a Job Interview? How to Improve Your Resume's Success Rate

Can't seem to secure a job interview? Here are a few tweaks you can make to your resume to help you get to that next step.

Few things are more disappointing than finding a job (or two or 10), submitting your resume, … and then silence. You don't even get a chance to talk to a hiring manager to tell them how jazzed you are about the position and to flaunt your skills and experiences.

If you're in the middle of experiencing this right now, don't get too down on yourself — it happens. In fact, an average corporate job listing receives 250 applications, according to Glassdoor statistics . Of these applications, only four to six candidates are called in for an interview before one is ultimately offered the job.

The good news is you can take the following steps to improve your resume success and help you land the interview:

1. Consider the format

Before you start analyzing each line and each word of your resume, take a good bird's-eye view and consider its formatting. With resumes, less is typically more, so there's no need to color code your skills, add elaborate borders, or even include a headshot.

The goal is to keep it simple so the employer or applicant tracking system (ATS) can focus on your skills. Speaking of the ATS …

2. Ensure your resume passes the ATS test

By now, you've probably heard of an ATS — though maybe not by that particular name. It's basically a type of software hiring managers use to collect, sort, scan, and rank incoming resumes for hireability. The top-ranking resumes determined by the system will then get passed to the humans at the company. Although this was initially common practice at large corporations, more and more companies are adopting this tool every day.

So what does this mean for you and your resume? It means you should take the necessary steps to beat the ATS bots . Here are a few quick fixes you can make to your resume so it is more ATS friendly:

Avoid using images, charts, graphics, or elaborate symbols. (Remember: Less is more.)

Optimize your resume with job-related keywords. Not sure what to include? Look up five similar job listings and scan them for the most frequently used words.

Save and upload your resume as a Word document, instead of a PDF. These tend to be more ATS friendly.

Even if the company you're applying to doesn't use an ATS, these tips will still help make your resume stronger overall.

3. Focus on — and quantify — your achievements

Now it's time to look at your resume with a more critical eye. It's easy to get stuck in the rut of listing your day-to-day responsibilities under each job, so ask yourself: Am I describing my daily tasks, or am I highlighting my achievements? Companies want to see the achievements ‒‒ to see you took the initiative to produce positive results.

While you're thinking about your achievements within your current and past positions, make sure to quantify them. Instead of saying you increased employee retention rate, showcase an actual percent change. Instead of saying you increased sales, include the dollar amount.

This will show  the company you're results-driven and capable of making changes.

4. Tweak your resume to fit the job description

Wait! Before you write this step off because you've already spent hours perfecting one version of your resume, listen up. Tailoring your resume to each job listing doesn't mean you have to rewrite it entirely. You should, however, tweak your resume summary and your work history to reflect the skills and experiences a company highlights in its job posting.

The more specific you are, the better, and usually that means tailoring — or even slightly tweaking — your resume to better fit the particular job you're applying for.

5. Cut those empty buzzwords

When writing your resume, it's easy to get trapped by buzzwords. After all, you want to sound smart and impressive, so why not lean into the idea of being a hard-working self-starter who's keen on thought leadership and strives for synergy and is always a team player .

The truth? Half of those words are overused cliches that lack any true meaning. The other half are just business jargon that, once again, lack any true meaning. Focus on cutting those words and replacing them with concrete, quantifiable terms that showcase your specific experiences and accomplishments instead.

6. Proofread … then proofread again

Our final tip that can increase your resume's success at landing the job interview? Proofread your resume. Then proofread it again and again — and maybe one more time. According to a 2018 survey , the biggest resume deal-breaker for hiring managers is spelling and/or grammatical errors.

Sometimes it can be difficult to catch errors on your resume after you've spent hours working on it; your brain will begin to fill in words that aren't there, and you might miss something important. If you have the time, set your resume aside for a day. Then return to it with fresh eyes.

You can also print it out (it helps to read it in a different format, away from your computer screen) or read it aloud. You'll want to look for misspelled or missing words, repetitive phrases, and empty buzzwords.

Final thoughts: Be patient and persistent

Once you've made these changes to your resume, start applying for jobs again, but exercise patience. Remember those statistics about job interviews earlier? How only four to six candidates out of 250 are called in for an interview? Give yourself time. The perfect opportunity will come along.

I tested 5 AI resume builders to help get a job — here's what happened

Here’s how to apply for a job using AI

I long for the day when I’ll wake up in the morning and get my AI ready to go to work for me . Until that time comes, the least AI could do for me today is to help me land a job I like.

Not everyone is a fan of resume and cover letters, but they remain staples in many recruitment processes.

For years, employers have also been using forms of AI to filter through these documents in order to narrow down the pool of applications they receive for any given vacancy. 

The latest advances in generative AI mean that right now employees can leverage AI tools at their disposal to empower themselves in the job-hunting process.

I wanted to see how powerful these tools are. To find out, I created a shortlist of AI resume and cover letter builders that I wanted to try. Tom’s Guide believes in fair fights, so I used each of them as though I was applying for the same job with the same profile.

A target was required and I found a LinkedIn ad for a real job as a remote Software Engineer with generative AI responsibilities at Meta (formerly Facebook) that looked promising.

The role asked for a candidate with over two years of coding experience and over two years of building large-scale applications. More experience was required in designing and completing medium to large features without guidance. Meta was looking for a candidate with, or in the process of obtaining, a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or equivalent practical experience. In exchange, the company was offering a salary between $116k and $168k per year.

I created a fictitious aspiring Meta software engineer, Tamsin Smith, in order to have some kind of profile I could submit to the AI. Smith holds two Stanford University degrees in computing science, completed an internship with Twitter and has been working at Google as a software engineer since 2019. 

If that’s not enough for Mark Zuckerberg to give her an offer, she also leads a local scouting group in her free time.

With an actual job ad and an alter ego in hand, I was ready to start reviewing AI tools. Read on to find out which tools I used, what they produced and my thoughts on their performance.

My first attempt was with Rezi.ai since it offers a free basic service and I wanted to check if the way I designed the review could work in principle. And it did!

Right after confirming my email, I was creating Tamsin Smith’s first resume.

I was presented with a choice between a “Job-Tailored Resume” and a “General Purpose Resume”; I went with the first choice as it was exactly what this test was about. It asked me for the role and company I’m targeting but I was blindsided when Rezi asked me to insert a job application I’d written for the role. Isn’t this something the AI should be doing for me?

I finished this side quest and then added basic details like my name and email, followed by my previous work experience. Here’s when I first encountered signs of AI life in the form of a bullet point generator to further explain my role. 

Rezi went on to ask me to add details on projects I’d worked on, my education history, certifications, coursework, involvement in other organizations, and my skills.

The next exciting step was the summary section, where I gladly let the AI take control. It was nothing I couldn’t have come up with myself if I simply wanted to summarize my resume, but it at least merits a pass mark. (I wanted to ask the AI to write a cover letter for me based on the finished resume but that feature requires a subscription.)

Overall Rezi marked the resume it produced at 87 out of 100, which I think is a bit too generous. If you have a rough idea of what you want your resume to look like, by all means, use Rezi so you don’t have to worry about the formatting. It might also provide a helpful AI-generated bullet point or two along the way.

If you were worried that not using Rezi’s AI was the one thing stopping you from getting your dream job, rest assured that (at least with its free version) this is not the case.

Resumaker.ai

“Designed templates that will get you hired at the world's leading companies,” Resumaker proudly displayed on its homepage. I also had to pay ($0.99) to download my resume and cover letter. Surely, I was on the verge of getting Tamsin hired?

By now I’d gotten the hang of inserting details like my education and work history. In this regard, little separates the resume builders tested here.

The AI kicked in to provide me with text I could insert as accomplishments in my jobs and as the headline summary. The latter left much to be desired but at least it was presentable. Resumaker didn’t offer to beef up my volunteering section so I had to write that part manually. As a whole, the resume felt a bit dry but at least it was presentable.

However, it’s a good thing this service isn’t called Coverlettermaker. Every sentence it generated started with either an “I am” or “I have”. When you’re working with such a structure, there’s only so much you can do to make the rest more exciting. Furthermore, it left the [Company Name] field for me to fill in. AI that’s supposed to help me land a job in a highly competitive market should come with higher standards. 

Resumaker.ai claims that thousands of applications it created landed people jobs. If there’s any truth to that, then on the bright side we really shouldn’t be overthinking what we’re sending to hiring managers.

The main question I asked myself before deciding whether each AI builder deserved a pass mark was: Can I send out the résumé as is? 

Teal didn’t quite make the cut here.

It asked me to connect the specific job I was applying for from LinkedIn to the resume and it started analyzing the job ad for keywords I should include. Fantastic! I was ready for a made-to-measure summary, past accomplishments, and cover letter — the areas where I wanted the AI to work its magic.

Unfortunately, this is where I felt let down. In the headline summary, Teal ended up giving me a compilation of the achievements it had previously generated but also prominently added that I had expertise in “work authorization”. The AI thought the right to work in the U.S. requirement from Meta’s job description was a hard skill. 

It scored its own resume at 79%.

As far as its cover letter goes, I appreciated that I could generate it for free without having to spend time adding more details than I already had. However, the result was something I could have just as easily written myself.

My score: 2/5

Kickresume.com

The last AI resume maker I wanted to test was Kickresume, which had the highest monthly fee out of the lot at $19 per month. You can bring that down by paying an annual lump sum that brings the pricing down to $9 a month or, as I did, utilize the free trial version. 

Right when I was losing hope in the resume generators, Kickresume lifted my spirits.

Its helpful AI writer was alongside me from start to finish, offering handy suggestions for work accomplishments, explaining my certifications, and also suggesting skills I should list specifically for a software engineering position. I ended up with a clean-looking CV and I didn’t even have to break a sweat.

Kickresume gave the resume it generated a score of 88/100.

If I’m in a pinch and need a new resume that I don’t have to scan for AI-generated sentences that would land me in the "rejected" pile, Kickresume.com is the first website I’ll be visiting.

I wanted to add a nice cherry to the cake, so I asked Kickresume to create a cover letter using the great resume it made. But this is where I was underwhelmed. 

While devoid of grammatical errors, I felt as though the AI didn’t take the résumé and job description I gave into consideration. It provided me with a few short lines that didn’t even name-drop Tamsin’s fictitious stints at Twitter and Google. You wouldn’t even know she completed two degrees at Stanford. Based on my positive experience with the résumé, I couldn’t believe this was the same AI content generator.

My score: 4/5

Resume created by ChatGPT

No subscriptions. No plugins. I wanted to see how well the free version of OpenAI ’s ChatGPT would do against the four dedicated AI resume and cover letter generators listed above.

I tweaked a prompt that I found online and, in 161 words, I asked the AI for a first draft of my new resume. I then asked the chatbot to refine its work based on the job description I gave it to make my resume less generic. In seconds, I had my second draft.

Since ChatGPT only gave me a plain text version of my resume, I then pasted what it gave me into a template from one of the previous builders.

I’m happy to announce that both myself and Tamsin were very pleased with the results. The resume easily rivals the ones generated from the other services I tested. I wouldn’t have minded some text to beef up the education section to explain what I had learned at Stanford. Also, the line pointing out that Meta was previously called Facebook is something I would never have included in a resume intended for Meta’s eyes. Other than that, ChatGPT gave me decent results in the shortest amount of time.

I was especially impressed with the cover letter I asked ChatGPT to craft for me. It was perhaps a bit too long for some tastes but it was arguably the most well-rounded out of the five.

The verdict

There have already been reports of people using AI to write resumes and cover letters who ended up getting hired for the positions they’ve applied for, and I’m not surprised. But as this test has shown, a website’s claim that it uses AI to provide a service is not some kind of guarantee of the level of service you can expect. 

Shop around when looking for AI resume and cover letter writers. Perhaps combine two or more of them to leverage each one’s specific strengths. But add the finishing touches yourself.

Seven Last-Minute Ways to Improve Your College Résumé

It’s crunch time! The deadline to submit an application to your dream job, a cool summer internship, or your top-choice graduate program is nigh. If you’ve never written a résumé before, you’ll need to start from scratch —and hurry!—but let’s say that you know the basics and you have a draft in front of you. You’ve run out of time to work on your résumé the old-fashioned way (i.e. with long-term involvement in extracurricular activities, a job, or university research), and you’re wondering how to boost your college résumé in a pinch. Specifically, what are some easy, last-minute ways to improve your college résumé?

Take a four- or eight-hour online course.

If you’re looking for an easy way to add something new (and legit) to your résumé, look no further than an online course, many of which can be completed in just a few hours. You have a lot of choices, too. LinkedIn Learning , which partners with Lynda.com , focuses its courses on professional skills, which may appeal to prospective bosses or internship supervisors. For a monthly fee of $29.99 plus tax, you can access any courses on the platform. If you are looking for a free alternative, consider edX or Coursera . Both of these platforms tend to host academic classes, meaning that they’re similar to the ones you’d find in your university’s course catalog (and they may require a number of hours of study), but there are also some options for students hoping to improve their computer skills.

No matter what you choose, you can improve your résumé last minute when you learn new skills. Not only will you be able to claim knowledge of programming, a foreign language, marketing, or any number of soft skills, but the fact that you went out of your way to take a nonrequired course speaks volumes to just how committed to learning you really are.

Expand on the responsibilities and activities you’ve already listed.

If you think your résumé has too much white space, don’t fret. Many students haven’t yet stepped out into the world of full-time jobs and professional development, so you aren’t alone if working concessions at a local movie theater was the only job you’ve ever held. The good news is, even without half a dozen work experiences under your belt, you can still flesh out the activities and jobs that do appear on your résumé. The key here is detail.

Let’s say you worked that concessions job. A lot of effort went into it, I’m sure. You greeted customers; you operated the register; you prepared food; you cleaned the counters and floors at the end of your shift; you trained a new employee. Use those relevant details to your advantage and give readers a better picture of what your job entailed. Maybe it was something like this?

  • Committed to working three four-hour shifts every week after school and was twice named employee of the month
  • Greeted customers promptly upon their arrival and provided helpful customer service as they ordered food and beverages
  • Operated the iPad register system smoothly to facilitate multiple payment methods and balanced the cash register at the end of the shift
  • Upheld health department standards behind the counter and in the lobby and maintained a clean and safe environment
  • Provided support to newer employees and thoroughly trained one new hire during my last month in the position

Voilà! With those details and action verbs, that description looks much better than just “Worked concessions.” And you know what? It gets rid of a lot of white space, too.

List your skills, even if they don’t fit cleanly elsewhere.

So, you picked up some HTML back in high school when you tried to start a blog? You grew up speaking Russian at home? You received your scuba certification on summer vacation? Even if you learned those skills in an informal setting, they can bring your résumé to life and make you seem more human. Consider adding a skills section below the sections about your education and work experiences to quickly improve your résumé.

Filling in those blanks based on your strengths, if relevant, is a quick way to make your résumé better without resorting to BS. Plus, listing your skills makes it easy to highlight key details about yourself.

Get rid of outdated accomplishments.

You’re slowly but surely working toward building a professional résumé, and holding on to outdated achievements isn’t doing you any favors. In fact, listing an achievement from your childhood not only seems immature but employers may assume that you haven’t actually accomplished anything recently. So, a last-minute way to improve your college résumé? Cut the fat.

Some rules of thumb: If you’re a senior in high school, get rid of the middle school accomplishments that are still listed on your résumé. If you’re a senior in college, delete everything from high school (unless it’s something, like a summer job, that continued into your college years). College underclassmen may decide to keep some of their achievements from their last couple of years in high school on their résumé, but no matter who you are, use your best judgment. The bottom line is that you should update your résumé with every major life change. You are constantly growing, and until you settle on a career path, your résumé should reflect your most recent achievements.

Complete a boatload of volunteer work on a short service trip.

Volunteering looks best on a résumé if you dedicated yourself to the activity over time. To really wow an employer, you’ll find it’s preferable to start volunteering at the local hospital or animal shelter as a freshman and stick with it throughout your college career. That said, if you have a little time to spare before you must submit your application, start now! Some community service looks better than none at all. If you’re very short on time, consider taking a weekend service trip with your church or an alternative spring break volunteer trip. These types of trips are so immersive that you can complete a month’s worth of service hours in a fraction of the time.

Add coursework that’s relevant to the job or grad program to which you’re applying.

As a college student, you may find that most of your experience is academic. Not to worry; play up your strengths! Some students elect to include a relevant coursework section on their résumés, which they tailor to each job or internship to which they apply. If you’re applying to a job in a national park, for example, you could list your coursework in biology, ecology, or geoscience. If you’re applying to work as a camp counselor at a summer camp, include that class you took about the issues in contemporary education. And if you’re applying for a retail position? Your business courses will look just fine.

Take it to your college’s career center.

Have someone look over your résumé before you submit it. Ask your friend, your work-study supervisor, or better yet, your college’s career center. A career counselor’s job is to help you begin your career, and they have seen hundreds of résumés. They can tell you if the formatting is wonky, if there’s a typo you missed, or if something seems unclear. Some career centers require appointments and others have walk-in hours. Contact yours as soon as possible, especially if deadlines are drawing near.

There aren’t many last-minute ways to improve your college résumé, but the above tips can help you in a pinch. Next time, work on your résumé over time to ensure it’s as good as it can be, but in the meantime, best of luck!
