Creating a resume is one of those tasks that can be stressful, but it does not need to be if you’re in the Apple ecosystem. That’s because your iPhone, iPad, and Mac, all have a readily accessible series of resume templates that you can access.

Whether it’s updating a resume into a new format, or creating an entirely new resume, we’ll show you how you can easily make a resume on Mac, iPhone, or iPad, by using the bundled Pages app.

If you don’t have Pages yet, you will need to download it to your device free from Apple. You’ll find it at the App Store for iPhone, iPad here , or Mac here . You’ll be able to sync your Pages documents, including the resume, across any of your devices using the same Apple ID.

How to Create a Resume in Pages for Mac, iPad, iPhone from a Resume Template

Pages functions mostly the same whether it’s being used in macOS, iOS, or iPadOS:

• Create a New Document
• Scroll down to the “Resumes” section and select the resume type you wish to create (we chose Classic Resume for this example)

• Fill out the resume with your information, including name, job position and experience information, education information, the standard resume fair

Once finished creating the resume, you can print it out, save it as a Pages file, save it as a DOCX file, save it as a PDF , or whatever else you’d like to do with it.

How to write a resume on a mac.

When you need to create a word processing document , such as resume on your Mac computer, you may have the option to use Microsoft Word for Mac or Apple's Pages, depending on the software you have installed on your computer. Before you choose a resume template from Word or Pages, the first step is think about your work experience and the nature of the position for which you're applying.

Resume Prep

If you have extensive experience doing the work that the new position includes, use the more traditional, chronological resume format. That type of resume lists your most recent jobs near the top of the page in reverse chronological order. If you're applying for a job that you haven't done before – but for which you still have the skills to qualify – use a skills-based or "functional" resume, which highlights your best skills or accomplishments near the top of the page. You'll know what skills are best to list for an individual job by closely reading the job posting, and then pulling out the required or desired skills the employer wants that apply to you. In either case, make some notes about your most recent jobs, the duties you performed, and the skills required for the job.

Microsoft Word Templates

Launch Word for Mac from your Mac's Dock and then select "Resumes" from the list of Templates that appear along the left hand side of the window. If none of those appeal to you, check out the Microsoft Office "Templates/Resumes" Web page. Once the template is downloaded, it should appear among your templates when you launch Word. From the Templates window, click on the one you want to highlight, and then select your desired colors and fonts. If the employer has specified certain fonts or font sizes in the job posting, choose those here. Then click "Choose." If you decide to change the font or font size after you've begun working on the document, that's fine too; simply highlight the text within the document, and change the font from the "Fonts" panel. The formatting of the document should remain the same.

Entering Your Information

Now fill your personal information into each pre-formatted field. Double-click on a section to highlight it, and then simply start typing; the generic template information will disappear and be replaced by your text. Enter your name, address, skills, jobs, dates and other information into the correct fields. To save the file, click "File," and then "Save As," and then name the document and click "Save." Word will automatically save it as a Word-based DOCX file – which tends to be the preferred file type for business, and for online resume databases. Be sure to review the document carefully so that none of the generic information provided by Word is left in the document. Have someone else review the document before you print it.

The Mac Alternative: Pages

If you're using Pages, follow a very similar process to create your resume. Launch the application, choose from the resume templates listed along the left hand side of the page, and click "Choose." If you want another template, try the iWork Community website, which offers several additional templates for download. Pages will automatically put your name into the "Name" field, as well as the phone number, if you have one saved to your user account. Double-click on a section to highlight it, and then start typing your personal details to delete the generic information. Highlight sections to drag and move them, or even delete them altogether. When you are done, click "File," and "Save As." Pages will save the document as a PAGES document, unless you specify otherwise, and it will allow you to save a copy as a Word document by clicking the check box in the "Save As" window. To save the document as plain text, click "File," and then "Export," and then choose "Plain Text."

Think about your job. How much has it changed since you started working at your position? Did you switch to home office, or has your workplace adopted hybrid work?

Did you have to automate some of your processes? Or did you have to entirely rethink your operations?

These require creativity, resilience and resourcefulness. This is what you need to focus on when working on your resume.

Going back to resume formats , the reverse-chronological layout is your best option.

Unless you're an intern, Apple recruiters expect you to have some relevant qualifications.

Even if you don’t have the work experience, there are still transferable skills you can add. Start with your most recent roles, but don't go back more than 10 years

If you don't have much experience, you have two options - the hybrid resume and the functional resume.

What's the difference?

If you're a recent college grad, or you have some internship experience, use the hybrid layout . The format allows you to include both skills and relevant experience.

This way you can include projects, similar to the tasks in the job description. Or list appropriate research papers and industry association memberships.

But if you have absolutely no experience, the functional resume is your best option. This one focuses more on your skills and abilities rather than practical experience.

Regardless of the format, concentrate on relating your experience to the company's values.

Here is how to divide your resume:

An important thing to remember is that Apple hires by team. So if you're going for a position within a particular team, check out who the recruiter is.

It’s a good practice to find the team’s hiring manager on LinkedIn.

Follow up with them after you’ve submitted your resume. Tell them how the opportunity means to you, and thank them for their consideration.

Let's start with the first section - the header. Even though it's a little box that sits at the top of your resume, don't be quick to disregard it.

Make sure there are no typos and all your personal details are listed. Your resume header should have:

• Your first and last name
• Your job title
• Your address
• A way to contact you, preferably a phone number and an email
• Any links to your portfolio and social media account

Don't worry if your current job title isn’t the same. Instead, include the title listed on the job description.

If you decide to reference your portfolio or LinkedIn, ensure the link is working.

2 Apple Resume Header Examples

Our friend gave us permission to use his draft resume, so you can see examples of both what to do and what to avoid.

Take a look at the first version of Gabe’s resume:

Okay, he has the job title down. There is also a link to his professional software engineering GitHub profile. But there are a few glaring mistakes here:

• Gabe has abbreviated his name. Don't do this, unless you're professionally known in the industry by your nickname. His GitHub profile is also listed as Gabriel Booth.
• Don't rely only on your online portfolio. Hiring managers need to be able to contact you, so include both your phone and email address.
• Finally, even if the position is remote, you need to include your location. This is usually needed to prevent potential administrative issues.

How can we make this into a better sounding resume header?

Take a look at the following sample:

Although Gabe’s job title is different, this resume header is much better.

Because if you separate the section from the rest of the resume, it will look exactly like a business card. And this is the whole point of the resume header.

So if you don’t know how to check if you've done a good job, just separate the section from the rest of your resume. See if it will be able to stand as a business card on its own.

If it does, you’ve nailed it!

Before we talk self-marketing, we must discuss the difference between summaries and objectives.

Simply put, they both serve the same purpose. To pitch yourself to your potential employer.

The only difference is who's talking. If you lack experience, or you're switching careers, then you should use a resume objective .

This way, you can show what transferable skills you have. Make sure you mention any relevant courses, volunteer work and side projects you’ve done.

If you've been in the industry for a few years now, then write a resume summary .

We all know you have many professional achievements. And you should be proud of them. But refrain from listing all of them in one long paragraph.

Your resume summary shouldn't be longer than 5 or 6 sentences. So pick only the achievements most relevant to the company's goals and its values.

3 apple resume summary examples

Continuing with Gabe’s resume draft, here is what you should avoid doing with your summary. Do you see the mistakes?

It looks like someone trying to look professional. But it’s actually very sloppy.

First, Gabe says that he's highly-skilled and motivated. You can't prove those in a resume. Except if you name specific projects, where these skills have been applied.

But no such projects are ever mentioned in the summary.

Since the summary’s aim is to keep them reading, don't wait until the end of your resume to mention your successes.

Also, given he’s a recent graduate, he hasn’t named his school.

Yes, many companies consider the name of your school as an important factor. Especially if you’ve graduated from an Ivy League college. But don't worry if you got your diploma from an online school. Or if you have no formal education. Some Apple jobs only require an equivalent industry experience.

What makes these mistakes even more noticeable, is how the summary is worded. It's targeted at the company, but Gabe hasn't stated how Apple will benefit from his skills.

Here's how to make yourself stand out:

But what if you’re a recent graduate?

Notice how if you substitute “Agile Software Engineer” with “recent computer science college grad” it will still sound good?

This is because the applicant has referenced tools and skills specific for the job. Plus, they've shown how they will be used to serve Apple customers.

And for those who have the experience, but don't know how to summarize it, consider the sample below:

Once you have perfected the summary, you need to keep the momentum.

Imagine reading a book or watching a movie. It starts well enough, the plot is good, and then - it fizzles out at the end. Don't make the same mistake.

Since the experience section should take the larger part of your resume, it needs to stand out on its own.

So although most of the basic details are listed correctly, a nice touch would be to add the company’s website. It shows attention to detail.

This way, the company's projects listed online will supplement your own portfolio.

Also, make sure that your entries are linked to measurable results. Don't make your experience section read like it’s copied from the job description.

For example, Gabe has mentioned that he has led a team of Technical Specialists. What happened while he was leading the team?

Did they achieve the results? Did they win any awards?

If you want to list leadership skills on your resume, display how your work affects your team.

Having considered all these points, have a look at how Gabe’s experience section looks now:

Something else to take into account is who is going to read your resume.

If you're sure that the recruiter has a technical background, you may want to reflect that in your resume. But you have to be absolutely sure the recruiter understands tech jargon.

Before we answer this question, we must look at the overall picture.

Because just as much as salespeople need to be a little tech-savvy, tech people must have social skills. There needs to be a cultural fit.

So, the key here is to have a balanced out resume. Try to show equal parts social and technical talents. Keep in mind to tie them to quantifiable results.

Managing the Resume Feature in the Mac OS

Resume is a handy method in macOS and OS X to quickly return you to what you were doing in an application the last time you used it. It remembers the window you had open when you quit an app and opens it (or them) automatically the next time you open the app.

Resume can be useful; it can also be one of the most annoying Mac features. Apple needs to provide an easy-to-use interface to manage how Resume works with individual applications, as well as the overall system. Until that happens, this tip will give you some control over Resume.

Information in this article apply to macOS Catalina (10.15) through Mac OS X Lion (10.7).

How to Control Resume

Resume has a system preference that lets you turn the function on or off globally. To turn Resume on or off for all applications, follow these steps.

Select System Preferences from the Apple menu or click its icon in the Dock .

Select the General preference pane.

To enable Resume, make sure the box next to Close windows when quitting an app does not have a check mark in it. To deactivate Resume, put a check in that box.

To enable Resume in OS X Lion, place a check mark in the Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps box.

Globally turning Resume on or off isn't the best approach to managing the feature. You probably wouldn't mind your Mac remembering some application states and forgetting others. There are several ways to accomplish this.

How to Use Resume Only When Needed

If you turn Resume off globally, you can still use its saved-state feature on a case-by-case basis, by using the Option key when you quit an application.

Holding down the Option key when you select Quit from an application's menu changes the "Quit" menu entry to "Quit and Keep Windows." The next time you launch the application, its saved state is restored, including all open application windows and the documents or data they contain.

You can also use the same case-by-case approach to manage Resume when you turn it on globally. This time when you use the Option key , the Quit menu entry changes to "Quit and Close All Windows." This command causes the application to forget all window and document saved states. The next time you launch the application, it opens using its default settings.

I guess the best skills to list on a resume are the skills that the potential employer is looking for.

If the employer is looking for someone to assemble Macs I would list Mac assembly as my skill.

If the employer is looking for someone to create PowerPoint presentations on a Mac I guess I would list my PowerPoint skills.

If the employer is looking for someone to package Macs for shipping I guess I would list my Mac packaging and shipping skills.

How on Earth can we possibly guess what some potential employer os looking for and what skills your friend has?

This app is a rip off.

I'll repeat it, THIS APP IS A RIP OFF. It should be reported to the BBB. You can't do anything with this app. Trying to type a resume to get a job and you get this crap. You type in the info that it calls for in the contact list and there is no where to go but cancel. Does this sound like a way to complete the info that is needed? I should have read the customer reviews first. I just read the product info and it sounded like a good app. Boy was I wrong. This is really frustrating? There are no apps to make a resume that I can find. I bought another one and it says that I need another app to use it, but my Mac isn't programed for it. More money down the drain! THIS REALLY STINKS BECAUSE I REALLY DON'T HAVE THE MONEY TO KEEP DOING THIS. I NEED A RESUME TO GET A JOB.

I spent time putting in all my information hoping to get a resume that I need ASAP it took the information Will not let me print or e-mail. It shows me the whole resume when I view it. But it will not print or e-mail the whole resume I do not recommend wasting your time on this application it is worthless. It is a big ripoff. The reviews must be fake. Because it will not work if you purchases this app. I have to start all over again to experiment with other Applications to get them to work. I never knew it could be so difficult to do a resume with an Apple Computer. Thanks to this application I will probably not get the position because I wasted too much time on this application.

Don’t bother wasting your money….

When creating a new resume it tells you that you first have to create your contact list. When you go to that page and fill out the information the only button at the bottom is cancel, there is not a continue or accept or ok button so you cannot create a contact list, therefor you cannot creat a new resume because it will not let you proceed until you create a contact list. I will contact Apple or the software company to get my money back.
