Who are the youth of today generation unlimited, we have approached several young people to understand their vision and how they look at the society they live in and make it their own, from each one perspective.

Being young is a synonym of change, progress and future. Being young is, ultimately, facing challenges and creating or recreating a space for future full development. It means turning problems into opportunities and solutions and being the driving force of society. 

Today, on the International Youth Day 2020 , we celebrate their visions and their choices, we celebrate “Youth Engagement for Global Action”, a slogan that seeks to highlight the ways young people engage at the local, national and global levels. 

Global challenges, like the coronavirus pandemic or climate change, as well as local issues, will have an effect on the future. It is time to see the extent to which this affects the youngest population and to advance solutions. People aged 14 to 29 years represent the largest generation in history.

We reached out to several Cuban youngsters to know about their visions, their roles in society as individuals and part of the population. From their individuality’s point of view, these young people look at the society in which they have to live and how to make it their own. They were posed with two questions, to which they had shared responses. What do you think is the role of young people these days? What are you doing from your position to help young people?

At our age, our role in the world is to carry out some important functions for our society and eventually become responsible adults, committed to our time. Young people were once condemned for their radical outside the box ideas however, now society has begun to cherish the youth voice and celebrate their vibrant ideas.

What strikes me about the voices of the young people today is that their limits know no bounds and they are fearless in questioning current norms and attitudes. If they feel something is unjust, they acknowledge it as their responsibility to transform circumstances rather than wishing for it to change. Young people are not only included in the conversation, they are proving they are capable of steering critical policies of reform. Whether it is the complex challenges of climate, poverty or social injustices, young people across the globe have made astonishing leaps of progress in raising awareness and inspiring others to do the same. These movements are filled with determination and passion that no one can discredit regardless of your views on the matter. By cultivating a society where we welcome the youth voice we reflect on the archaic methods and attitudes and examine them with a fresh eye. Traditionalists criticise our ideas as idealistic, far fetched and disconnected with reality however, we are concerned with creating our own reality, a better reality and a fairer reality. Our creative, motivated and strong willed energy is what makes us special and what makes us powerful.

We make change because we believe we can make change. The youth voice is cultivated by empowerment of ourselves and each other. Studies have shown that our generation have rated higher in compassion and generosity than previous generations. Wunderman Thompson Intelligence compiled a study investigating young people’s views on careers, identity, community, activism and brands titled " Generation Z: building a better normal ". This report shows that 82% of our generation (1995-2010) have stated they are attracted to jobs that contribute to a greater good for the benefit of society. Additionally, 70% are driven to pursue careers due to passion rather than the size of their pay checks as well as wanting their work to contribute to a greater cause.

Diversity is an important principle we continue to fight for whether it is gender or race equality. We value a fair society that champions all and not the select few. One of the major contributing factors of empowering young people is each other. By linking fellow young people together, it facilitates a special bond through similar standing that promotes collaborative powerful plans and discussion. It is no surprise youth advocates and advisory panels have become vital elements to government and organisations because of our effective workings to strive for a better tomorrow.

In the words of Nelson Mandela, “the youth of today are the leaders of tomorrow.” This highlights the importance of encouraging our young people to use their voice and not fear being heard. We are the first “digital natives” allowing us to use technological innovations to our advantage and to be as informed as possible. Furthermore, social media has demonstrated to be a robust medium in inspiring masses and connecting with fellow youth advocates. The internet has effectively enabled us to become active agents of change without a physical present yet have contributed immensely to key movements. For many years, the youth voice was disregarded or included for tokenistic use. We have demonstrated that this will not be us. We must continue to vocalise our concerns and use our natural courage, compassion and creativity to fight for a better society as a whole. The youth of today are not only concerned about living their own lives, we’re here to make a legacy.

I am the youth of today. I am a descendant of the brave Katipuneros and the strong-willed leaders of the revolution. I wear the red banner and carry the torch of my guerrilla forefathers. The blood of my ancestors runs through my veins. I was not delivered into this world in defeat. The resilience of the past centuries nourishes my will but I am still fighting for my freedom, justice, and peace.

To our distinguished members of the board of judges, to my fellow contenders, friends, visitors, ladies and gentlemen, good afternoon.

I stand before you to speak for democracy, that our heroes died for, the unfortunate and unjust strived for, and the present and even the future generation’s endeavour. Honor and dignity flow in my blood and my heart beats for freedom.

Ladies and gentlemen, the Filipino heroism is our legacy. It is found in the determination that made it possible for our Banganhon brothers to fight for freedom. It is in the courage that sustained them to seek justice for the brutal Banga massacre many years ago. Let the blood of the courageous Katipuneros run through the veins of our children. Let their cries be echoed to our youth. Let us revel in the victory and peace that our forefathers gave their life for.

But where is our freedom? Through the agony of the three hundreds of years under the Spanish colonization, several years under the Japanese and American occupation, I should think we are liberated from foreign forces… but a fellow Filipino dictator once again threatened our peace. When victory became ours, the seed of democracy in our country began to take root and sprouted to grow. I should rejoice, and shout. However, ladies and gentlemen, I can see pictures of our Mother Land in reality at the present and she is chained. Her shackles are those of poverty and inequality. Her chains are those of injustices, human rights violations, corruption, and treason. Her eyes are blinded by media, and social networking. But her heart breaks as she sees her sons point their guns at each other. She sees her daughters slaving their way in foreign lands to earn money to buy food for their families. Is this what freedom has cost her?

I am the youth of today, I am free to do what I want without prejudice. I am free to say what I want without fear of incrimination. I have grown fond of TV shows, love teams and teleserye, and fight over them in social media.  If only my fellow youths can defend our land from domestic terrorist groups, like how we defend AlDub or Pastillas girl. If only we can protect our West Philippine Sea from foreign invaders like how we protect our love teams from rumors. Then I can say that our forefathers’ heroism is not in vain.

Fellow Banganhons, I am the Filipino Youth of today. I enjoy social networking like facebook and instagram. I like taking selfies and posting it online. But what I do online does not define me. It is my thoughts – thoughts that will always contain memories of the meaningful virtues our ancestors passed down to us. It is my words – in the stories that I will tell my future children and grandchildren of how Aeaw-aeaw came to be. It is in my actions that embody the true nature of Saguibin – helping one another.

As Dr. Jose Rizal once quoted, “ He, who doesn’t know how to look back where he came from, will never reach his destiny .” The only way to reach our dreams for the future is to have a clear understanding of the past. What has already happened can never be changed but they can be lessons we can learn from.

Introduction

We spend the first half of our lives trying to understand the older generation and the rest of our understanding of the new generation. Every year has its beauty. Adolescence has always been frustrating, mainly because of age and age. With its natural complexity and impatience, most young people are more willing to do and learn independently than be guided by adult knowledge. Older people are more likely to be at home in words than actions and often make noise with impatience and contempt. Throughout the ages, older men were found shaking their heads and thinking of the good old days when the younger men of that time got to know each other better and showed due respect for age and culture.

Some of the accusations of modern youths are that they represent an unruly generation that could not survive or want to live. They are plagued by compulsive disrespect that manifests in increasing disrespect for parental authority and rebellion against established social norms. With a bit of excuse, they entered the streets, feasting violently. They want to attract attention to unusual behaviors. They became a generation of drug addicts and developed a hatred for hard work honestly, always wanting something worthwhile. Its relentless youth escapes into the hostile world. Now its hateful youth are out in the troubled world. This is not sure what to expect from it.

If we think about it, it is not just young people who are restless; human society itself is in a state of flux. Rising wealth in developed societies has created insecurity among young people who yearn for instant rewards. Children receive all the money they need from their parents and seldom deal with the need to work to support themselves. Even in less-developed lands, young people often feel unsatisfied because their view of a happy future is shattered by internal strife or political instability. This causes the youth to protest against rampant corruption in society and the denial of social justice.

In these situations, should we ask ourselves if all the talk about devotion to good ideas, moral renewal, and essential virtues leaves young people feeling cold and unsatisfied? They are no longer willing to accept whatever their elders choose to do to them blindly. They are prone to critical reviews of all social and political systems they are called upon to adopt. When they have a clear set of values ​​that are reckless and reckless in pursuit of profit, political leaders deliberately infiltrate the masses, their interests are allowed to frustrate the whole process, common corruption in high places and other differences between promises and performance, naturally turn into insults and cries for change.

Students from the most critical group for young people of all nations. Their most significant and most serious complaint is that what they learn after spending a lot of time, effort and money is very little related to the realities of life they face after university. It is natural for them to want to have a say in the decisions to make some connection with their future. They could no longer tolerate politicians covering themselves as teachers. They see themselves as truly capable of taking care of themselves.

If we look at today’s youth from the preceding, it is clear that they are not alone in feeling that way. They may be accused of not knowing what they want. Theirs is a movement against the hypocrisy and dishonesty of their elders. These worries about the future and these worries about saving lives from self-indulgence are commendable. But it cannot be said that a higher purpose always guides young people. Disagreements are necessary for a bond when things go wrong. Violence comes from young people. Young people, who are firmly convinced that the authority they are fighting for is unfair and oppressive and feel the truth of their position, react emotionally. The intensity of their feelings fills with resentment, and they turn to violence.

All in all, the new generation today is misunderstood and maligned more than it deserves. The land we will eat will be much better than the land we have ever been or would be. At the same time, life will present its most significant and complex challenge. It would not take criticism and find fault with it quickly enough. Most importantly, it is managed with understanding to develop into the ability to recreate the earth it will inherit in line with its excellent vision.

" The Youth of Today are better than Youth of Yesterday "

I think that the youth of today is better than the youth of yesterday. Kids are absorbing information faster than ever before. They are experts at using social media, and they seem to master new technologies faster than anyone else. I believe that the children are our future, and we have to treat them well. The youth of today is different. That does not mean they are better or worse. Every generation seems to think the younger generation is worse than the generation before. This is not true. There will always be good and bad in each generation. It is natural to think your own generation is better because they are more likely to share your values. That does make it true. Yes to some extent I agree that we might be more fortunate in having a much more decent standard of living and material wellbeing. However, I feel that to some extent we cannot deny and can't help but think that the youths today are handling alot more problems in comparison to youths before, which could be for instance, our parents when they were much younger. Coming to think of it, we all do admit that we seem more fortunate because we are able to live in a age with better technology which makes our lives more convenient and also more entertaining. However, we are talking about youths right now, and one of the important things we do, (more like have to do to be able to survive in this age), are our responsibilities as a student. In this pragmatic age with high expectations to keep up, I feel we are less fortunate as individuals who face more stress, more responsibilities, more obligations and more standards to keep up. The kind of accomplishments youths need to achieve and tasks to be completed these days are of a different level than the previous generation. Honestly, we hear our parents complaining about the hike in prices in the past three decades or so. In the same way, isn't that enough to highlight the fact that the education system and standards has changed in the same way? We now see the 'hike' in standards, and we youths are unfortunate in the sense that we are made to compete against many of the all other people in our generation, seemingly like a 'rat race', having the idea that only the fittest survive, you either 'make it or break it'.

In five preregistered studies, we assess people's tendency to believe "kids these days" are deficient relative to those of previous generations. Across three traits, American adults (N=3,458; M age = 33-51 years) believe today's youth are in decline; however, these perceptions are associated with people's standing on those traits. Authoritarian people especially think youth are less respectful of their elders, intelligent people especially think youth are less intelligent, well-read people especially think youth enjoy reading less. Today’s youth .

India’s population is over one billion and out of it, 40 percent are young men and women in the age group of 15 and 30. They form a huge, reservoir of energy and cream of the country. Wisdom and discretion are not the monopolies of the elders alone.

The young men and women are also intelligent and wise and much of a nation’s progress and future depend upon them. According to Samuel Johnson, “Young men have more virtue than old men; they have more generous sentiments in every respect.”

Young people are full of abundant energy, courage, spirit for adventure imagination, hope, and ambition. These can be very well used in the constructive and developmental activities of the country. These should not be allowed either to go to waste or used for destructive purposes.

The young men and women of India should be fully involved in the creative work of nation-building and reconstruction. The younger generation, which is more generous, flexible, sensitive, and dynamic can do wonders if properly guided and motivated.

It is with the help of the young men and women of China that Mao Tsetung, the chairman of the People’s Republic of China (1949-59) and of the Chinese Communist Party affected the great Cultural Revolution which transformed the whole of China into one of the great political and military powers of the world.

Mao was well aware of the great power, exuberance, spontaneity, plasticity, ebullience, and unlimited energy to act found in the youth and used these to a great advantage for himself and China. Besides China, there are many other countries like France, Indonesia, etc. where the youth has helped in changing the course of history in more than one way.

It is easy to blame the youth of India for impatience, indiscipline, irreverence for the elders, authority, and social customs. They are also charged with laziness, recklessness, addiction to drugs, and such other mg-practices. But all these reflect one-sidedness and lack of proper understanding on the part of the elders and grown-ups.

No doubt the youth of modern India has its own limitations, problems, etc. but these can be removed or decreased to a great extent by sympathy, understanding, and appreciation of the young generation. If the youth of India have any shortcomings and faults, the elder people are to blame because the former mirror the latter.

Proper orientation and positive steps are the need of the hour to engage the youth of the country in nation-building activities. Their zeal, enthusiasm, and energy need to be channelized in the developmental activities and social reconstruction. The Indian youth, full of inexhaustible power is always eager to do something positive, constructive, and appreciable for the society and nation.

In order to harness the youth-power of the country, a National Youth Policy has been framed to instill in the youth a deep awareness of national ideals of secularism, non-violence, integration, and our ancient historical and cultural heritage.

 It also aims at developing in the youth qualities of discipline, self-reliance, leadership, justice, Fairplay, sporting spirit, and scientific temper so as to enable them to combat superstitions, obscurantism, and other numerous social ills and evils.

With the above objectives in view adventure institutions, cultural centers, Yuvak Kendras, sports centers, etc. have been established in various important cities and towns of the country. For example, the Indian Mountaineering Foundation, New Delhi, and National Adventure Foundation are two important institutions for the promotion of adventure.

These provide training facilities and financial assistance for undertaking mountaineering, hiking, trekking, expeditions, explorations, cycle tours, etc. to promote a feeling of oneness and unity. The young men and women of India exchange visit from one part of the country to the others. It helps them familiarise themselves with different environments, lifestyles, and social customs.

Then there is the National Service Scheme. Its main objective is to involve the college and +2 level students on a voluntary and selective basis in the program of social service and national development. Started in 1969, now it is being implemented in all the states and union territories and covers over 5,000 colleges.

Under this scheme rural and slum reconstruction, repair of roads and school-buildings, village ponds, tanks, tree plantation, conservation of the environment, health and family welfare, adult and women education, etc. are undertaken.

The students also help local authorities in implementing various relief and rehabilitation programs. At times of natural calamities like floods, droughts, famines, and earthquakes NCC students and volunteers play a very important positive and constructive role.

There are special schemes for the tribal youth to give them vocational training and to update their skills to help them in self-employment. There are youth, hostels strewn all over the country to promote travel among young men and women by providing cheaper accommodation when on educational tours and excursions to historical and cultural places.

And the Nehru Youak Kendras, about 446 in number and spread all over the country, serve non-students and rural youth to improve their personality and employment capability Under the international scouting and guiding movement Bharat Scouts and Guides and All India Boys Scouts Association are inculcating in me Indian youth a spirit of loyalty, patriotism and thoughtfulness for others.

But still, more and vigorous efforts are needed to solve the problems of the youth. They are a frustrated lot for want of proper employment opportunities. Our education system does not take note of their requirements and so fails to prepare them well for life and career

The red-tapism, nepotism, cast considerations, and favoritism add further to their problems and frustration. For want of proper leadership and ideals, they suffer from a lack of direction, purpose, and decisiveness.

The task of tackling these and other problems of the youth is difficult, enormous, and challenging but not impossible. It is the duty of the government, voluntary agencies, the corporate world, and the society to see that the youth-power is properly harnessed, that the young men and women are properly educated and trained, and subsequently satisfactorily employed.

 The advanced and developed countries are so because they have had been investing heavily ‘for the last many decades in the schemes and programs related to the training, education, orientation, and welfare of their youth.

With the passage of time, the number of young people in India is likely to increase and so it becomes imperative that more effective ways and means are found to use their vast energy in economical reconstruction and social regeneration activities.

Perhaps, one of the best ways can be the greater involvement of them in welfare schemes, community development programs, and nation-building activities so as to generate in them a sense of purpose, pride, self-confidence, and relevance. It is only by such means and efforts that the young people in India can be given the much-needed self-confidence and a sense of fulfillment and belonging.

They can be inspired to work in the slums, villages, and hamlets in their spare time. They can be urged to adopt families, villages, or clusters of houses to improve sanitation, education, social awareness, economic condition, and skills of the people residing in them.

In the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, female youth are more than twice as likely to be not engaged in education, employment, or training compared to their male counterparts, according to UNICEF . Additionally, they are among the highest risk groups for gender-based violence (GBV) globally, facing threats such as sexual exploitation and abuse, sexual harassment, human trafficking, female genital mutilation, child marriage, and gender-related killings. This disparity is exacerbated by ongoing armed conflicts, legal shortcomings, and deep-rooted patriarchal norms. Empowering female youth and girls is crucial focus area of the UNODC Regional “Youth 4 Impact” Programme’s interventions.

"Youth 4 Impact", supported by the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation (BMZ), is a regional programme that works to empower

youth and build their resilience against drugs, violence, and crime. It operates in Algeria, Egypt, Lebanon, Libya, Palestine, and Sudan, and is employing a variety of interventions targeting the empowerment of female youth and gender equality, including through sports activities, awareness-raising sessions, educational games, and promoting them as agents of change.

Sport is a powerful tool to promote peace, tolerance, and respect. It enhances youths’ physical, emotional, and social skills, boosting self-esteem, and teamwork. It provides safe spaces for girls, fostering female mentorships and leadership, thereby increasing women’s visibility in sports and beyond, challenging stereotypes, and transforming gender roles to combat discrimination and violence.

Stopping GBV, one kick at a time – Football Tournament for Girls in Algeria:

A football tournament was organized by UNODC as part of “Youth 4 Impact” in Algeria for female athletes as part of the “16 Days of Activism” campaign against violence against women and girls. Playing football, traditionally considered a male sport, could mean more for young women as they challenge gender norms, discover their strength and resilience, and become more empowered to advocate for themselves. The event included a session on gender-based violence for the participants, with the presence of the Ministry of Youth and Sport, thereby including policymakers in GBV discussions.

“Line Up, Live Up” for Gender Equality and Anti-Corruption in Lebanon:

"Now, I can engage in community activities and play there an important role without fear " – says Soumaya Hakawaty, a 15 year old girl, who participated in the “Line Up! Live Up!” activity in Lebanon.

The UNODC's "Line Up, Live Up" training programme is also utilizing sports to raise awareness of gender equality and promote life skills among youth. Specifically, it helps young people understand how gender roles, norms, and attitudes that fail to promote equality can lead to disrespect and violence, particularly against girls and women. Girls are encouraged to take control of their lives and health and to seek support when facing violence. Boys and girls together learn the importance of collaboration in promoting gender equality and becoming ambassadors for change within their communities. Through the UNODC "Line Up, Live Up" curriculum, 346 female trainers and 8 female master trainers have been certified and 9 are in the certification process, benefiting 9,569 girls in participating in the "Youth 4 Impact" regional programme countries.

The “Line Up! Live Up!” Programme can be easily adapted to different needs and contexts. For example, in Lebanon, UNODC provided customized interactive sessions for civil society professionals working with youth, focusing on gender and women’s empowerment through sports and anti-corruption efforts. These sessions included "Line Up, Live Up" activities and addressed anti-corruption through the UNODC "Play for Integrity" game, which teaches students critical thinking, teamwork, social responsibility, and awareness of their rights. Professionals gained new strategies for engaging youth through sports while employing innovative and practical tools to tackle corruption and gender issues, preparing them to further implement these approaches with youth.

The "Youth 4 Impact" regional programme has significantly impacted and positively influenced 27,547 women, including 11,107 young women and girls. The programme's interventions are centered around three main outcomes: enhancing the legal, policy, and institutional frameworks for preventing drug use and crime among youth; strengthening the response of sectoral systems and institutions to the needs of vulnerable and at-risk youth and families; and empowering youth to become more resilient, rehabilitated, and reintegrated. I'm a trans man. We don't have a secret agenda – we're just asking you to let us live.

I don't know why i was born transgender, but i have no secret agenda. i want my child to live in a world where they are safe and free to be exactly who they are..

My wife gave birth to our first child earlier this year, and I am over-the-moon in love with being a father to my baby boy. Along my parenthood journey, I’ve thought a lot about the life I want to help build for my son and the community I want him to grow up in.

At the same time, I’ve thought a lot about the things I experienced as a kid that I hope he never has to. 

For example, I hope my son never has to feel a drop in his stomach as he approaches the cashier at a grocery store, anxious that he might be turned away simply because of who he is. I don’t want him to stress about his first apartment application being denied for the same reason. I hope he’s never told by a doctor that he can’t get treatment for his cold because the doctor doesn’t know how to treat “people like him.” These are just a few things I’ve worried about and experienced as a transgender man living in America.

I didn’t have the language growing up to know that I am transgender, but I knew I was different. I was bullied because of it, and some of those specific rejections will forever be seared into my childhood memories. But I was lucky. My family and friends were and have always been supportive. It’s difficult to navigate the current anti-transgender political climate in our country, but my strong support network helps me through it.

Not everyone is so lucky. In fact, most of us aren’t. Somehow, I ended up with enough support to dedicate my career to ensuring things are better for young people growing up today than they were for me. I’m more than two decades in, and while we’ve made meaningful progress for transgender people in the United States, we still have a long way to go.

Sunday marks the International Transgender Day of Visibility – an annual observance intended to celebrate transgender people and raise awareness of discrimination faced we face worldwide. This year, I’m reflecting on how the visibility of transgender people is dangerously outpacing understandingof what it means to be trans.

Transgender people have visibility – but do we have understanding?

Fewer than 1 in 3 people report personally knowing someone who is transgender. Yet the American public is saturated with viral social media videos and political news stories, largely generated by a well-funded coalition of organizations long dedicated to making it as difficult as possible for LGBTQ+ people to go about their daily lives.

Nex Benedict deserved long, happy life. Instead, we lost them to cruelty.

These organizations proudly advocate for the abuse of LGBTQ+ young people through the dangerous and discredited practice of conversion therapy, and they have celebrated their role in influencing Texas to “investigate” parents who’re doing their level best to support their transgender kids.

They’ve succeeded in generating national debates about excluding transgender kids from school sports, banning medically necessary health care and even prohibiting restroom usage – all under a guise of “protecting young people.” But these debates are largely missing the point. 

Transgender people are our friends, family members and neighbors. They work in the cubicle next to us at the office, and they pray next to us in our houses of worship.

If you don’t know a transgender person, it can be hard to understand what it means to be transgender. But transgender people, like all people, are just trying to get through the day.

No one chooses to be transgender to win a trophy. No one “changes their gender” on a whim. Embracing who I am in a world that makes it quite difficult to be so is the most deliberative thing I’ve ever done.

Trans youth need support to survive, let alone thrive

I don’t know why I was born transgender, but I have no secret agenda. I’m a husband, a father, a brother, a godparent. Like everyone else, my focus is on working hard to take care of my family, contributing to my community and going about my daily business.

As I enter parenthood, what I care about most is ensuring my son has a better experience growing up than I did. For all of us who care about protecting our young people and ensuring they can thrive, the conversation we ought to be having is, “How can we accomplish this for all of our young people?”

For transgender young people , the data tells us all we need to know. Roughly half of transgender and nonbinary young people seriously considered attempting suicide in the past year. Nearly 1 in 3 LGBTQ+ young people said their mental health was poor most of the time or always due to anti-LGBTQ+ policies and legislation.

While these are harrowing statistics, the solution is right in front of us. Research  consistently shows  that LGBTQ+ young people with access to supportive environments at home, at school or in the community report significantly lower rates of attempting suicide.

Like all our young people, transgender young people need love and support in order to thrive. It’s really that simple.

To parents, from a transgender person: Let’s clear up some anti-trans misconceptions

From my perspective, the debates being generated by anti-LGBTQ+ activists about sports and medical care aren’t really about these policies. They’re about making it as difficult as possible for LGBTQ+ people, especially young people, to be who they are.

If fair-minded people want to have a reasoned and responsible discussion about inclusion in sports and the long-standing medical protocols used to support transgender people, I’m all for it. But the current trend of rushing to rip transgender kids away from their teammates and overrule medical decisions made by parents in consultation with doctors suggests an ulterior motive – one that has grave consequences for transgender young people.

This International Transgender Day of Visibility, I’m not asking everyone to agree with me on particular policy questions. I’m asking fair-minded Americans who share my desire for these young people to live − let alone thrive − to slow down, engage in deeper discussion and gather unbiased facts before forming opinions and taking action.

I reject the idea that supporting some young people must come at the expense of others. We can work together to create spaces where all young people can feel safe and accepted. When we do so, everyone wins. 

When my son grows up, I have no idea what he’ll be interested in, or who he’ll fall in love with, or what he will want to do with his life. There are so many unknowns as an expecting parent, and it is easy to fall down a rabbit hole of worries and what ifs.

But I do know one thing for certain: I want my child to live in a world where they are safe and free to be exactly who they are.

Youth Fair reopens Saturday afternoon, Ultra Music Festival bounces back for day two after Friday washout

MIAMI - Periods of heavy rain and gusty winds put a damper on some South Florida events this weekend.

On Friday, The Youth Fair was canceled and the Ultra Music Festival shut down for the night due to weather conditions. On Saturday morning, The Youth Fair announced that it would reopen at 3 p.m. while Ultra resumed the music and festivities for day two.  

The event started without a hitch on Friday, but then as a Tornado Watch was issued for all of South Florida, the event was forced to shut down. 

On X, formerly known as Twitter, organizers said, "Severe weather, lightning and strong winds. For your safety, Ultra Friday is temporarily shutting down. Please calmly leave the park now."

At around 9 p.m., tens of thousands of people flooded Biscayne Boulevard.  

This came hours after people from around the world rushed in for the sold-out three-day festival. 

Despite the rainy conditions, thousands had lined up for hours to attend the Bayfront Park event.

In town from San Antonio for Ultra, Frankie Limon said the storms won't rain on his parade.

"I don't see that stopping me. I mean, I got a tank top on and have good music and vibes, as long as everyone's safe, the musicians or the equipment. I guess, if they want it, they want to go on, I'm with it," he said.

Miami native Carmen Berrio said rain is in her DNA.

"Because Miami parties with rain or without it so we're gonna have fun," she said.

Berrio said she's been preparing her whole life for this moment.

"My first time. I'm very excited. I'm also excited to see Martin Garrix, he's like my favorite deejay in the world. I've been literally listening to him since I was like four years old," she said.

"I've never been and I live here, so I feel like I needed to go," said South Florida native Ciara Lawler.

"And, I came last year, and it was so much fun," added Nico Callahan, another Ultra reveler.

Lawler told CBS News Miami's Nikiya Carrero that she wasn't refunded for Friday's washout and decided not to go that night; however, she did return for Saturday as Ultra extended the night for an extra hour to make up for the shutdown.

Miami-Dade and Broward counties were under a Flood Watch , and a Wind Advisory through Saturday evening.

The National Weather Service's Storm Prediction Center had placed South Florida under a Level 1 risk of severe weather with the potential for heavy rain, flooding, damaging gusty winds, small hail, and isolated tornadoes.

South Florida could see three to five inches of rain with some areas getting as much as six inches.

There was also a Miami Heat game Friday night at the Kaseya Center. While the arena is covered, getting to and from both events with strong storms could be a nightmare.

There is also the Miami Open  happening at Hard Rock Stadium. Matches are played on outdoor courts and the rain could impact games and attendance. Last year, the tournament drew more than 386,000 attendees across the two-week event.

The rains will also impact the ongoing Florida Renaissance Festival at Quiet Waters Park in Deerfield Beach and Miami-Dade's Youth Fair at the Fairgrounds, SW 112 Avenue & Coral Way. 

The outdoor events on Friday and Saturday may be delayed or canceled due to the expected stormy conditions.
