By definition, the term ‘modes of transportation’ refers to the means by which people, goods and services achieve mobility. In logistics and geography, the wide diversity of transportation modes falls under one of the three major categories- land, water and air. In addition, each mode is adapted to serve certain requirements of mobility for freight and people. The result is a marked difference in the use and deployment of the various modes of transportation.

In the recent times, technology and costs have made authorities and institutions attempt to integrate various modes through linking them closely. The aim is to enhance production and distribution of resources (Winston, 2005). Therefore, it is necessary to develop an understanding of how the different modes of transportation compare with each other in terms of costs, capital requirements, government actions and cash requirements.

Land transportation includes three systems- roads, railways and pipelines. The three systems are some of the most advanced and useful forms of transport because they provide connection between communities, societies and institutions (Washington, Karlaftis & Mannering, 2011). In addition, they provide a cheap way of connection over short and long distances and a convenient way of providing mobility of passenger, energy and freight of varying weight, size and nature.

According to Anderson and McCullough (2011), road cost allocation is the analysis model that shows the roadway costs to different road users within the context of the share of cost imposed on each group. With this model, it is possible to determine the cost of using roads in the United States. It provides analysts with an easy way of estimationg the cost of road transportation.

This depends on the vehicles used and the level of government involved in imposing costs (Washington, Karlaftis & Mannering, 2011). For instance, the 2010 estimates indicate that automobile users meet a federal cost of about $0.011 per mile and state costs of about $0.018 per mile (National Research Council, 2011). In addition, they must meet user payments of $0.036 per mile and external costs of $0.12 per mile (Anderson & McCullough, 2011).

Thus, the total cost of using an automobile is about $0.149 per mile in the US. Similarly, the total cost of using pickups and vans is $0.421 per mile while the cost of using other vehicles such as unit trucks, combination trucks and buses is $0.162, $0.256 and $0.144 respectively (Anderson & McCullough, 2011). These estimates indicate that the cost of using vehicles depend on size- the heavier the vehicle, the higher the cost of using roads

Apart from the facility costs, using roads in the United States as a mode of transport requires additional costs due to policing, planning, street lighting and court fees (National Research Council, 2011). Accordingly, some motor vehicle costs are set and imposed by municipal governments, including street-parking ($12.9-21.56 billion USD), fire protection (0.9-3.4USD) and policing (9.4-14.2 billion USD) (Margreta, Ford & Dipo, 2011).

In addition, road usage requires extensive use of fuel, which is primarily in the form of petroleum products (gas) obtained from gas stations throughout the country. In this case, road users must bear the cost of fuelling their vehicles. For instance, automobiles and pickups use the least fuel per mile while heavy vehicles such as trucks and buses use more fuel.

Construction and maintenance of roads in the US is one of the most important but expensive tasks used to enhance logistics in the country. Statistics provided by institutions such as FHWA indicate that roadway expenditures by all levels in the US are estimated at $217 billion (Margreta, Ford & Dipo, 2011).

This includes the cost of construction and maintenance of all roads. According to estimates, road construction costs, including grading and paving, ranges from $320,000 in good conditions to $2,800,000 per mile in difficult conditions (Margreta, Ford & Dipo, 2011). In rural areas, it is estimated that the cost of constructing roads ranges from $2,400,000 to $4,400,000 (Hummels, 2007).

In addition, it is worth noting that roads occupy extensive land. Therefore, land value must be determined when estimating the cost of road transport in the United States. Estimates indicate that the cost of land devoted to roads in the country exceeds $500 billion, with an annualized value of about $40 billion (National Research Council, 2011).

Apart from these costs, road transportation mode has a number of regulations. For instance, each motorist must obtain a valid driving licence. Moreover, it is a legal requirement that children under the age of 16 years should not drive. This also applies to people under the influence of alcohol and other drugs as well as people with mental problems.

Railway transportation is similar to road transport because can accommodate a wide range of passengers and freight. Nevertheless, railroads are efficient in transporting heavy freight along great distances at low costs. In addition, rail transportation mode is more efficient in fuel usage compared to road transportation modes.

According to estimates, the cost of transporting freight such as oil or petroleum products in the US using railroad is about $10.3 billion between Bakken, ND, and Gulf Coast (Government Accountability Office, 2010).

When using roads to transport an equal amount of freight over the same distance, it would cost $3.21billion above the amount spent on railroad transport (Government Accountability Office, 2010). In addition, railroad transportation is time efficient because the causes of delay are fewer than those affecting road transport.

The cost of building and running railway lines is cheaper than the cost of building roads. For instance, estimates indicate that the cost of building a single-track freight line with a low number of locomotives, running on flat ground and with simple signalling system is about $2 million per kilometre, which includes mechanical and electrical equipping costs (Government Accountability Office, 2010).

High technology and high-speed railway lines cost the government about $200 million per kilometre (Anderson & McCullough, 2011). This shows that the cost of building high technology and speed railways is higher than the cost of building highways. However, the amount of freight and passenger that each can hold differs, with railway transport being the most efficient and less costly (Winston, 2005).

It is also worth noting that companies, rather than individuals, operate railway transport. Therefore, government regulations are mostly directed towards these companies.

For instance, the regulation on weight (rail truck units) and length of a single engine train affects individual companies involved. In addition, the security requirements for freight and passengers affect companies because they are supposed to provide such services to freight and passengers. This differs from regulations in road transport that affect both individuals and companies.

Pipeline transport has become an efficient means of transporting liquid and gaseous substances in the recent past. This is due to its ability to transport heavy and risky commodities over long distances. In addition, it operates at low costs. In the US, the cost of transporting crude oil between Bakken and Gulf coast is about $9.3 billion for pipelines and $10.3 billion for roads (Hummels, 2007).

Similarly, it is estimated that the cost of transporting crude oil from Alberta to Gulf Coast is about $13.7 for pipeline and $15.7 for rails (Margreta, Ford & Dipo, 2011). Thus, it is important to note that the cost of using pipelines is less when compared to both rail and road transport.

In addition, the cost of building pipelines differs significantly with the cost of constructing railroads and roads. For instance, the cost of constructing a gas pipeline of 12-20 inches is about $961 per mile and $835 per mile for a 22-30 inch pipeline (Winston, 2005) For crude oil, the cost of constructing a 12-20 inch pipeline is about $516 per mile and $530 per mile for a similar pipeline designed for oil products.

In total, it is estimated that the cost of building all types of pipelines for crude oil, gas and petroleum product is about $4,469, $6,163 and $4,726 per mile respectively (Hummels, 2007). This shows that the constructing pipeline is more efficient than constructing roads and rails to transport the same product.

Water transportation is the oldest mode of transport. It is divided into inland and external transport systems. In the United States, inland transport includes the transportation of freight and passengers between cities and towns along the American coastlines and in the great lakes. Domestic water transportation in the country accounts for 30 per cent of the total amount of freight and passengers transported with this mode.

The cost of transporting freight and passengers using ships and other marine vessels is about $29.0 billion per year, which compares to $542 billion, $50.0 billion, $10 billion and $ 29 billion for road, rail, pipeline and air transportation costs respectively. It is also estimated that the price of fuel for marine vessels range between $60 and $160 per mile (Margreta, Ford & Dipo, 2011).

The cost of constructing facilities for ships and marine vessels is less than that of roads, rails and pipelines because vessels only runs on the water surface. They only need docking and control facilities.

In most cases, water transport for freight and passengers involves companies and not individuals. However, some individuals own or operate domestic ships and other vessels for transport and leisure. As such, they are equally affected by government regulations and policies.

For instance, in the US, there are regulations on the amount of freight and number of passengers (weight) that can be transported on a ship at a time. In addition, the age of a vessel and fuel usage are regulated. Licensing is one of the most significant methods of government control and policing in water transport. Security for passengers and freight must be guaranteed by the company offshore and at the docks.

Unlike other forms of transportation, water transportation modes have the capacity to accommodate large and bulky freight over long distances.

Capital considerations include the cost of the vessels and the cost of constructing docking facilities. For instance, the cost of a cruise ship known as Queen Mary, a typical ship, is about $800 million (Hummels, 2007). A typical container ship costs about $75 million. This is an indication that capital considerations must always revolve around the cost of the vessels and its maintenance because docking facilities are provided by the government at a cost.

Air transport is the most recent and most efficient in terms of duration. The method requires extensive infrastructure, security and legal regulations. In addition, it requires expertise and large amounts of capital to operate.

The economics of air transport compares with that of other types of transportation. For instance, air transport has contributed to globalization because aircrafts provide real-time connection between continents. In fact, aircrafts spend between 5 and 10 hours to travel from Europe to America.

It is estimated that air transport contributes to the transportation of 1 million people per year, and the number is increasing. The cost of air transport is about $29.0 billion per year, which compares to $542 billion, $50.0 billion, $10 billion and $ 29 billion for road, rail, pipeline and water transportation costs respectively (Margreta, Ford & Dipo, 2011).

Air transport is the most risky and sophisticated mode of transportation. Transport modes are the means supporting the mobility of passengers and freight. They are mobile transport assets and fall into three basic types; land (road, rail, pipelines), water (shipping), and air.

1. A Diversity of Modes

Transport modes are designed to carry passengers or freight , but most modes combine both . For instance, an automobile has the capacity to carry some freight, while a passenger plane has a bellyhold that is used for luggage and cargo. Each mode is characterized by technical, operational, and commercial characteristics defining its market opportunities and economies of scale . Technical characteristics relate to attributes such as speed, capacity, and motive technology, while operational characteristics involve the context in which modes operate, including speed limits, safety conditions, or operating hours. The demand for transport and the ownership of modes are dominant commercial characteristics, as transportation modes are used to support economic activities and generate income.

a. Road transportation

Road infrastructures are large consumers of space with the lowest level of physical constraints among transportation modes. However, physiographical constraints are significant in road construction, with substantial additional costs to overcome features such as rivers or rugged terrain. Even if the same market area is serviced, it may not be equally accessible, depending on the mode used. Thus, in some markets, rail and road transportation can be complementary as one may focus on passengers and the other on freight.
Different levels of service . For a similar market and accessibility, two modes offering different service levels will tend to complement one another with niche services. The most prevailing complementarity concerns cost versus time.

Thus, there is modal competition when there is an overlap in geography, transport markets, and level of service. Cost is one of the most important considerations in modal choice. Distance remains one of the primary determinants of modal utilization for passenger transportation. However, for a similar distance, costs, speed, and comfort can be significant factors behind the choice of a mode.
Infrastructure usage . Competition resulting from the presence of freight and passenger traffic on the same itineraries linking the same nodes. Therefore, each level of capacity a mode uses is at the expense of the other mode.
Market area . Competition between transport terminals for using new locations (terminal relocation or expansion) or capturing new markets (hinterland).

It is generally advocated that modal equality (or modal neutrality ) should be part of public policy, where each mode would compete based on its inherent characteristics and merits. Since different transport modes are under different jurisdictions and funding mechanisms, modal equality is conceptually impossible, as some modes will always be more advantageous than others. Modal competition is influenced by public policy, particularly over the funding of infrastructure and regulation issues. The public sector usually provides roads, while many other transport infrastructures are financed by their operators. This is the case for rail, air, and maritime transportation. For instance, in the United States, the Federal Government would finance 80% of the costs of a highway project, leaving the state government to supply the remaining 20%. This share is 50% for public transit, while the Federal Government will not provide any funding for passenger rail. Under such circumstances, public policy shapes modal preferences.

3. Modal Shift

During congestion, it is thus likely that a time shift will be preferred to a modal shift , particularly if the time shift is relatively marginal (e.g. a few hours). An individual may delay travel at a later time while a freight delivery can be rescheduled.

There are important geographical variations in modal competition . The availability of transport infrastructures and networks varies enormously, with corridors subject to the highest modal competition level. Corridors have many different modes that, in combination, provide a range of transport services that ensure an efficient commercial environment. Thus, in contrast to the European Union, China, and Japan, rail freight transport occupies a more significant market share in North America, but passenger rail has a negligible share. However, there are limited services in many parts of the world, and some critical modes, such as rail, may be absent altogether. This limits the choices for passengers and shippers and acts to limit accessibility. Passengers and freight are forced to use the only available modes that may not be the most effective to support their mobility. Areas with limited modal choices tend to be among the least developed. On the other hand, advanced economies possess a wide range of modes that can provide services to meet the needs of society and the economy.

All modes are affected by energy price volatility , particularly petroleum , from the individual car owner to the corporation operating a fleet of hundreds of aircraft or ships. Different pricing mechanisms are used, namely direct rate adjustments, as in the case of shipping, or indirect adjustments, as in the case of airlines, with the reliance on fuel surcharges when energy prices are increasing. In the context of higher energy prices and environmental concerns, and higher input costs for transportation, the following can be expected:

Higher transport costs increase the friction of distance and constrain mobility. As a major consumer of petroleum, the transport industry must increase rates. Across-the-board increases cause people to rethink their movement patterns and companies to adjust their supply chains.
Because energy costs impact modes differently, a modal shift can be anticipated. Road and air transport are more energy-intensive than the other modes, so energy price increases are likely to impact them more severely than other modes. This could lead to a shift towards water and rail transport in particular.
Higher fuel prices incite a greater fuel economy across modes. This can be achieved by reducing speed, through engine and fuel innovations, or electrification.

If a modal shift results in higher costs and less efficiency, then this shift is not sustainable. Modal shift strategies often supported by public policy goals have initial difficulties competing with existing transport alternatives. Evidence underlines that subsidies are usually required to support initial attempts at modal shifts, but if the shift needs to be constantly subsidized, it may not be a viable option.

4. Passengers versus Freight

There is a complementarity between passenger and freight transport systems . With some exceptions, such as buses and pipelines, most transport modes have been developed to handle freight and passenger traffic, but measuring performance is completely different for freight. In some cases, both are carried in the same vehicle, as in air transport, where about 80% of the freight is transported in the cargo holds of passenger aircraft. In others, different types of vehicles have been developed for freight and passenger traffic, but they share the same infrastructure, such as rail and road traffic. In shipping, passengers and freight shared the same vessels and often the same terminals. Since the 1950s, specialization has occurred, and the two are now entirely distinct, except for ferries and some RORO services.

Sharing freight and passenger modes is not without difficulties , and indeed, some of the major problems confronting transportation occur when the two compete for the use of scarce transport infrastructure. For example, trucks in urban areas are seen as a nuisance and cause congestion by passenger transport users. Daytime deliveries and double-parked trucks are perceived as a particular nuisance. The poor performance of some modes, such as rail, is seen as the outcome of freight and passengers having to share routes. There is growing interest in using transit system segments to move freight, particularly in central areas. This raises the question as to what extent and under which circumstances freight and passengers are compatible. The main advantages of joint operations are:

High capital costs can be justified and amortized with a diverse revenue stream.
Operating and maintenance costs can be spread over a broader base.
The same modes or traction sources can be used for freight and passengers , particularly for rail.

The main disadvantages of joint operations are:

Unmatching demand locations . The origins and destinations of freight flows are usually quite distinct from passenger traffic.
Frequency of demand . Passengers usually need high-frequency services, while freight, except air cargo, tends to be less critical.
Timing of service . Demand for passenger services has specific peaks during the day. For freight, it tends to be more evenly spread throughout the day. Several freight operations prefer night services since they ensure that shipments arrive at their destination in the morning.
Traffic balance . On a daily basis, passenger flows tend to be in equilibrium, irrespective of the distance involved (e.g. commuting or air transportation). For freight, market imbalances produce empty flows that require repositioning assets such as trucks or containers.
Reliability . Although freight traffic increasingly demands quality service, delays (diversion from posted schedules) are unacceptable for passengers.
Sharing routes . Favors passenger traffic, with passenger trains often given priority or trucks excluded from specific areas at certain times of the day.
Different operational speeds . Passengers demand faster service but specific cargo, such as parcels, face similar requirements.
Security screening measures . Require different procedures for passengers and freight.

Consequently, the ongoing separation of passengers and freight on specific gateways and corridors likely involves a growing divergence of flows, modes, and terminals.

5. A Growing Divergence

Passengers and freight are increasingly divergent activities as they reflect different transportation markets. Passenger and freight transport are being unbundled in several modes and across many regions.

a. Shipping

It has already been mentioned that passenger services have become separated from freight operations in the maritime sector. Ferry services are the exception, where ro-ro ships on high-frequency services adapt to the needs of both passenger and freight market segments. These ferry ships can transport cars, buses, and trucks carrying freight with the respective proportions determined by the demand. Deep-sea passenger travel is dominated by cruise shipping, which has no freight-handling capabilities and cargo ships rarely have an interest or the ability to transport passengers.

Most rail systems improved passenger and freight services, maintaining both segments sharing the same infrastructures . Proportions have a strong geographical variation, with much of the developing world having passenger rail as the dominant mode for inter-city transport, particularly in India and China. In Europe, national rail systems have also prioritized passenger service to expand regional mobility. Significant investments have improved the comfort of trains and passenger rail stations, but most notable has been upgrading track and equipment to achieve higher operational speeds. Rail freight transport has tended to lose out because of the emphasis on passengers since such systems were optimized for passenger flows. Because of their lower operational speeds, freight trains are frequently excluded from day-time slots, when passenger trains are most in demand. Overnight journeys may not meet the needs of cargo owners. There are already restrictions on truck dimensions and weights in certain parts of cities, and there are growing pressures to limit truck access to non-daylight hours. For example, certain highways exclude truck traffic, which is likely to become a growing trend; the need to separate trucks from passenger vehicle traffic. This separation can be spatial (separate roads or lanes) or temporal (evening deliveries).

d. Air transport

Air transport is the mode where freight and passengers are the most integrated. First, they share the same terminal facilities, although there is a specialization with some airports focusing on freight activity. Yet, even here, a divergence is being noted. The growth of all-freight airlines and freight-only planes operated by some major carriers, such as Singapore Airlines, is a trend. The interests of the shippers, including the timing of the shipments and the destinations, are sometimes better served than in passenger aircraft. The divergence between passengers and freight is also accentuated by the growing importance of charter and low-cost carriers. Their interest in freight is minimal, especially when their business is oriented toward tourism, as tourist destinations tend to be lean freight-generating locations.

In order to have easy mobility of persons and goods, it is necessary to have a sophisticated and widespread transportation system. This system is made up of five primary areas of transportation, which are: – Motor vehicles – Railroad transportation – Air transportation – Water transportation – Pipelines Each of these five modes consists of different subsystems which make up the system. Each mode is used to transport persons or goods, but in many instances, one mode may be favored over the others. All five modes require some primary source of funds for building and maintaining the infrastructure.

These funds may come from a number of different places such as the federal government , state, or the city through which the system runs. Different government agencies have jurisdiction over the modes. These agencies focus on maintaining and improving safety of each system. The individual states also have certain obligations to the operation and regulation of the different modes of transportation. Each mode is made up of primary subsystems. The subsystems of railroad transportation include freight trains and passenger trains.

Freight trains are used to transport goods and materials between cities while passenger trains are sed to transport people. Although freight trains are still used all across the nation, rail intercity freight has accounted for a decreasing share of the total ton mileage over the past 30 years. This is mostly due to the increase in truck transport. Rail passenger traffic had also declined over the years until better service was offered by Amtrak and the price of fuel increased. Much of the decline in rail passenger traffic has been due to the increasing number of air passengers.

Air transport can also be divided into the subsystems of passenger and freight transport. Passenger air travel has rapidly increased over the years ue to: – Increasing Gross National Product – Increasing wealth of the middle-income groups – Increasing number of nonprimary industry in the economic system – Increasing amount of general aviation – Improved technology The areas for air transport of express and freight and mail has also increased rapidly over the years. This is due mostly to improved technology which has steadily lowered the cost of air transport.

Like rail and air transport , water transportation can also be broken down to passenger and freight transport. Passenger transportation by water only ccounts for a very small percentage of water transport because it is very slow and relatively inconvenient for most people. This is primarily used by people for vacation purposes. Most often, water transport is used for freight movement of items that are bulky and of low cost per unit volume. Pipelines can be divided into two principle classes including oil and natural gas pipelines. Oil pipelines are used to transport oil and oil-products.

Gas pipelines differ from oil pipelines in that they are not in competition with other carriers. Each mode is used to convey certain goods or materials. Highways are ost often used to carry motor vehicles. These vehicles may be privately owned, company owned, or even state owned. They may range in size from single passenger vehicles such as motorcycles to large freight vehicles such as triple- trailer trucks. The transport of freight may include anything from raw materials to finished products. Railroads are used to carry freight and passenger trains.

In both cases, the number of railroad cars may vary between destinations. However, it would not be practical to haul a single car for a long distance , therefore, many cars are usually hauled on each trip. Passenger trains are designed to haul passengers, while freight trains are designed to haul materials ranging from raw goods to finished products. Air transport is used in the transportation of passengers and freight. Aircraft used to transport passengers come in many different sizes. They range from small single passenger aircraft to large jumbo jet aircraft.

Transportation of freight is another area of air transport. Most common is the express and freight and mail carriers. Most of this material is carried by local passenger/cargo carriers. Some military aircraft is used in the transportation of much larger freight. The materials transported by air may include anything from raw materials to finished products. Another mode of transporting passengers and freight is by water. The transportation of passengers is slow and inconvenient, therefore it is not used very often except for pleasure.

The size of water craft may vary from small single seater jet skis to large cruise ships. The most common use of water transportation is for freight. The type of freight moved is usually limited to those classes that are bulky and of low cost per unit volume. Pipelines are mainly used to transport oil and oil products or natural as. Oil pipelines are divided between gathering lines and trunk lines, while gas pipelines are divided between field lines and trunk lines. Each mode must have sufficient funds for building and maintaining the infrastructure.

For the highway system, funds come from several different areas. The United States highway system is publicly owned, therefore much of the funds are received from the federal government, however, most of the funds are received from highway user taxes. Federal highway funds are available for construction and improvement of the federal primary system. The state is esponsible for the upkeep of most primary and secondary roads. State highway systems may overlap federal systems. The funds for most state primary systems come from the state, while local and county authorities are responsible for secondary systems.

Local and other systems usually receive funds from the local authorities for maintenance, improvement, and construction. Toll roads receive funds for upkeep by charging people a small fee to travel on the highway. Railroad systems are usually privately owned. Most railroad systems are built and maintained by the company, but funds are also provided by the federal government. The air transportation system obtains much of its funds from federal aid if the facility is owned by local governments (in most cases they are). The airlines themselves are also responsible for much of the funds required to maintain the facility.

Small general aviation aircraft are usually privately owned and used for recreational purposes, or owned by businesses which do a large amount of traveling. These facilities are usually paid for by the local area and the users of the airport. The construction, maintenance, and operation of waterways is paid for by the federal government since the United States Coast Guard assumes esponsibility for the supply and operation of navigational aids. While the federal government pays for the waterways, most of the vessels are company or privately owned, with the exception of U. S. Coast Guard vessels.

Improvement to ports is usually is usually funded by state or city aid or from borrowing. The pipeline transportation system is the only mode of transportation that gets no direct aid from the federal government. Most of the funds required to construct and maintain the pipelines comes from the company which owns the pipeline. Different government agencies from the U. S. Department of Transportation ave primary jurisdiction over each mode of transportation. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) provides funds to states for highway construction, improving, and management.

FWHA also provides funds for several state- administered safety programs. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) focuses on maintaining and improving safety of motor vehicles and equipment and conducts test programs to evaluate and guarantee compliance with the standards . The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) develops and administers programs to achieve safe operating practices in the industry. Primary jurisdiction of airways is controlled by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

The FAA issues and enforces air safety regulations, develops and operates the airways, and inspects and certifies aircraft. The United States Coast Guard enforces federal laws regarding navigation, port safety and security, inspection of vessels, and protection of the marine environment. All construction and safety standards are enforced by the U. S. Coast Guard. Pipeline transportation is controlled by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission of the Department of Energy. Many transportation organizations exist at the state level .

Each state has certain roles in the operation and regulation of the different modes. States must follow the regulations set by the federal government , but each state can also make its own set of regulations. An example of this would be the N. C. seatbelt law. The United States transportation system is made up of several different modes of transportation. Each of these modes are operated and regulated to different degrees by federal, state, and local governments. All of these modes of transportation give a great deal of mobility for the people and goods and materials of each state.

Transport or transportation is the means for movement of humans, animals, goods, etc. for one place to another for some purpose.

It is transportation that enables communication, trade, exchange, etc. between societies and localities and therefore, it is extremely important for the development of it.

Transportation contributes to the development of economic, social, political and cultural fields of a civilization and leads to the betterment of their conditions.

The revolutions that happened throughout history, such as the Industrial Revolution, or the Russian Revolutions, etc. would have been incomplete and ineffective without good means of transportation’s.

It may also be said that having better and more effective means and lines of transportation than other countries, makes a country more powerful or prosperous. Thus, it becomes a criterion to assess the development of a country.

There are various functions of transportation, because of which it is important. These are:

Physical Supply of Products

Transportation becomes a means to carry necessary raw materials from raw material providers to factories where it is used to for production of goods.

From there, these products are carried to wholesalers and then markets, when it finally reaches in the hands of consumers.

In this process, it is transportation that plays the primary role. Without it, this process of supply of product to the market would not have been possible.

Development of railway transport helps much to develop industry, commerce and whole economy of any country.

It is very useful in transporting big and heavy goods and materials such as big machines, coal, food grain, chemicals, automobiles, iron, steel etc.

Water transport is as an ancient means of transport, it was developed and used to transport goods and people from one country to another before the development of air transport.

It is also operated to transport goods from one part to another of any country through big canals, rivers or sea.

Water transport is a system of transporting goods and people from one place to another by ship, boat, steamer, motorboat etc. through canals, rivers, lake, sea, ocean etc.
