10 Rules To Live by for More Success, Happiness, and Freedom [Updated]

my 12 rules to live by image

THE #1 secret for achieving more success, happiness, and freedom in every area of your life is to develop a core set of “personal rules to live by.”

I know it might sound counterintuitive, but after building five 7-figure businesses in five different industries, I’m convinced that it’s true.

And the reason is simple.

Personal rules give you a foundational structure by which to live your life.

They eradicate indecision, temptation, and distraction and, paradoxically, create more freedom for you to do the things you love.

It’s one of the reasons why I love vegans and vegetarians (even as someone who spent $2,500 on a ridiculous steak dinner with my buddy Bedros Keuilian!)

When you’re a vegan, you live by the personal rule that “Under no circumstances will I ever eat meat.”

It’s not, “Well, I probably  shouldn’t  eat meat…buttt everyone else is having a burger so I’ll indulge just this once.”

No. You do not eat meat. Ever.

It’s just part of who you are.

And this is the same type of structure I want to help you build in your life.

When you take the time to develop your own rules to live by, everything in your life becomes easier. You no longer have to ‘think’ about the decisions and opportunities in your life…instead you have a clear set of operating principles that make everything automatic.

If you have the personal rule that you don’t hit the snooze button (and you truly live by that rule), you never have to sit in bed and negotiate “Just five more minutes” with yourself.

You wake up, turn off your alarm, and get to work. Period.

And in this essay, I’m going to share  my  personal rules to live by and the overarching philosophy that guides my life.

My 10 Personal “Rules to Live By”

These rules are not ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ and they may or may not be appropriate for your life. But they’ve served me well over the past 20 years and have been critical to the successes I’ve enjoyed.

My goal in writing this is not to tell you what you should do. But rather to motivate and encourage you to develop your own operating principles and use them to live a better, more productive, and happier life.

Whether you adopt my rules or not, I challenge you to think about this topic deeply and consider how a few “set in stone” non-negotiable rules could have a profound and lasting impact on the quality of your life.

1. Committment to a Consistent Wake Up Time

For years, I operated by the rule that “I go to bed and wake up at the same time 7 days per week” (8 pm and 4 am respectively).

However, more recently, I realized that this particular rule was unnecessarily restrictive. And, after reading  Why We Sleep , by Matthew Walker, I also realized that it wasn’t healthy.

Today, I’ve modified this rule to fit my new listyle and committed to simply waking up at the same time everyday.

This rule not only helps me stay consistent in my schedule (and allows me to attack my deep work blocks every workday), but gives me more energy and motivation than I’ve ever had before.

I challenge you to try it out for a month.

Whether you join the 5 am club or the 7 am club or even the 9 am club doesn’t matter. Just commit to waking up at the same time every day of the week and see how your life changes.

2. Daily Deep Work (Writing)

I have, quite literally, made my millions through the power of the written word.

From sales pages to email copy to my best-selling books, all of my business ventures have lived and died on my ability to put words on a page that motivate my audience to take action.

As such, I follow the personal rule that I write for at least 60-minutes first thing  every  morning without fail.

No matter what type of work you do, committing to this type of consistent daily deep work will have a profound impact on your business and result in more money, less stress, and more fulfillment.

3. The “No Email” Rule

For years, I would wake up, check my email, and immediately get sucked into the vortex that is my inbox.

This caused me to start my days from a negative and reactive state and I knew I needed to make a change.

So I implemented the personal rule that “I do not check email before 11 am and don’t take phone calls before 10 am”.

The result has been more focus and productivity during my “ magic time ” and infinitely less stress and overwhelm.

No matter what your business is, I encourage you to set a strict personal rule around how you handle emails and other forms of communication.

It will protect your time, sanity, and success.

4. Be Polite and Corteous (and Don’t Swear)

I’ll be honest with you…

Hanging out with my friends like Bedros Keuilian and Jason Capital, makes living by this rule a challenge.

But I still do it.

A few years ago, back in the day when I still swore like a sailor and punctuated every thought or comment with an aggressive f-bomb, I realized that I was misaligned.

I never swore in front of my family or in the content I wrote for Early to Rise…so why would I do it in my daily life?

I committed to my “no swearing” rule (with the help of my trusty swear jar) and within a few months, was able to articulate my ideas without resorting to profanity.

5. Proper Planning and Preparation

One of the personal rules to which I attribute most of my success is my committment to proper planning and preparation.

At the end of everyday, I use my Perfect Day Formula Kit to plan my days and update my daily gratitude and achievment journal.

And it’s literally changed my life.

When you wake up knowing exactly what needs to be accomplished and why, everything runs smoother. Your days are more productive, effective, and fulfilling and you eliminate the dead time from your schedule.

6. My “No Confrontation” Rule

99% of the time, confronatations, either in-person or online are a waste of time and energy.

And I refuse to allow menial arguments to steal my energy or happiness.

If I’ve caused harm to someone, I apologize and fix the situation. If someone on my team or in my life has over stepped a boundary or failed to meet an expectation, I communicate it as cordially and politely as possible.

But I don’t waste time with trolls or haters. And I never will.

7. My Guiding Lights

There are two phrases that guide my life…

“Nothing Matters” and “It will all be over soon”.

Simply put, I can only work toward my big goals and vision when I silence the noise and remember that other people’s opinions (meaning the opinions of the masses…not my mentors or board of advisors) don’t matter and that, no matter how much I accomplish…my time is limited.

These ideas help me stay centered and calm in the midst of chaos and ensure that I’m always focused on what’s  really  important instead of vanity metrics of ego-driven desires.

8. Full Responsibility

I believe, and have created a “personal rule to live by” that EVERYTHING in my life–good and bad–is my responsibility.

Even if a situation isn’t necessarily my fault…I am still the person responsible for finding the solution.

If an employee drops the ball on a big project, it was my responsibility to train them or communicate my expectations.

If someone violates a boundary, it’s my responsibility to communicate and reinforce that boundary.

When you take full responsibility for your life, you get out of the passengers seat and into the driver’s seat.

Blame has no place in the life of an Operator .

9. The Person I Don’t Want to Be

Another personal rule I always try to live by is “That I will not be the person I don’t want to be.”

Pettiness, jealousy, and envy don’t drive me toward the life I desire or help me make progress toward my big goals. Gossip and bad mouthing do nothing to serve me.

As such, I don’t allow them in my life.

10. Keep the Child Alive

As an entrepreneur and high-performer, it’s easy to fall into the trap of taking yourself and your life too seriously.

To be too rigid in the way you live, to avoid fun and adventure in favor of “hustle and grind”.

But, as Oscar Wilde said, “Life is far too short to be taken so seriously.”

Every day and week, I do  something  to keep the child inside of me alive.

Whether it’s singing karoke to Living on a Prayer in front of 200 people, wrestling with my dog Daisy, or spending the night watching one of my favorite comedians deliver an epic stand up, I’m constantly trying to inject more fun and aliveness into each day.

Because life is short. And it’s important to enjoy the ride while it lasts.

Conclusion: What Are YOUR Personal Rules to Live By?

Right now, you’re likely having one of two reactions.

You’re either dismissing what I’ve shared today (and me), which is ok.

Or, something just ‘clicked’.

High achievers will understand the value of these philosophies and how each rule I’ve shared can improve and enhance some area of their lives.

But like I said before…

The purpose of this list is to stimulate YOUR thinking about the rules that will transform YOUR life .

So now, I’m curious…

What are your top 3 personal rules for life? Are there any rules on this list you’re going to implement? Any that sound completely crazy?

My Life My Rules

My Life, My Rules One day I woke up and my parents were just gone. I do not know where they went or why they did not say goodbye. Now I am all alone and have to live by my own rules. Making my own rules is very necessary because I need to set boundaries for myself in order to survive. Here are the five most important ones I have created for myself.

Rule one, must be in the house by 11. This is an important rule because if I stay out longer than that I could get lost or someone could hurt me during the night. This rule is related to my personal values because having a set time to be home helps to be organized and I think being organized makes life a lot easier. This rule will affect my life in a positive way because it will prevent bad things from happening.

Rule two, budget monthly expenses. This rule is an important rule because I need to know how much money I have and what I need and not want I want. This rule is related to my personal values because I like to be organized. This rule will affect my life in a positive way because it will help me save money and only buy what really needs to be bought.

Rule three, cut all unnecessary expenses. This rule is important because it will help save money and then I will be able to survive financially longer. This rule is related to my personal values because I always spend my money on things I do not need, but I want or impulse buys. This rule will affect my life in a positive way because I will be able to have more money to spend on things that really matter like food and supplies.

The Essay on Is Money the Most Important Thing?

Nowadays, we are living in a world where everything turns around money and luxury. People do not realize that we can find more things which are more important for our lives and happiness. Some years ago, other important things were to spend quality time with the family, talk to each other about important thing in order to be always together and be informed about what is happening to the most ...

Rule four, be polite and use manners. This rule sounds stupid but if you are living in a world without parents, being rude to people is not going to get you anywhere. This rule relates to my personal values because when I hold a door for someone and they do not say thank you, I just say you are welcome loud enough so they hear so they realize I am not their slave and should acknowledge I am there and did something kind for them. This rule will affect my life in a positive way because people will realize I care when they do something nice for me.

Rule five, if you are all by yourself do not try and do something that you are unsure if you are able to do. For example do not try and lift something really heavy that would take 4 people to lift by yourself. This rule is related to my personal life because if you do not know if you can do it you should not try it without help. I have tried to do things by myself and it never ends well. This rule will affect my life in a positive way because it will prevent me from getting hurt and possibly dying.

Living by rules is important because you never know what can happen when you are by yourself. If you set yourself rules before a situation happens you will know how to react, causing less bad things to happen. Also rules help you survive longer by yourself because you will not be spending your money things you do not need. It is all about being prepared.

Health & Wellness

Most popular, how writing a personal contract improved my life (and tips for creating your own), i’ve remodeled 3 kitchens—these are my biggest design regrets in each one, 3 ways to optimize your closet (plus, a tour of my new closet space).

my life my rules essay

I’ve often felt just a little bit different from the crowds I’ve found myself in. A little more quiet, a little more sensitive, a little more introspective, a little more obsessed with pink kitchen appliances. I haven’t always minded. Being different can be a gift. Ironically though, for years, my inner self was dominated by a bellowing voice in my head that said, “Be different , but don’t differ .”

This message became a tyrannical “rule” that governed my life—so familiar I didn’t realize it was there at all, just like I didn’t realize not everyone operated by this same regulation.

The anatomy of a rule

This “rule” took a variety of forms: “Don’t disagree. Don’t be disagreeable. Don’t rock the boat. Don’t frustrate. Don’t argue. Don’t challenge. And don’t question the reality that’s being presented to you. Especially with the people you care about.”

As with most of the rules we find ourselves ruled by, I’m sure these must have served me well at some point. But, as an adult, they began exacerbating my relationships and, basically, shaping me into a resentful, passive-aggressive, codependent human being who didn’t say what she meant, mean what she said, or stand up for her basic needs and desires.

So that was awesome, for me and everyone else.

As is often the case, it took some major life meltdowns for me to start doing the hard work of recognizing the rules that were driving my behaviors and learning how to shift them. And by “hard work” I mean vulnerable, exhausting, expensive, slow, 100%-worth-it hard work . For me, that involved therapy, support groups, prayer, books, therapy, prayer, grace, patience, support groups, mentors, friendships, therapy, therapy, therapy.

Plus one additional factor: Practice.

And, if I were to give you two words to describe the practice of breaking your own personal rules, it’s this: uncomfortably uncomfortable.

Case in point

Several years ago, I met a guy I really liked. We met online and arranged to meet in person in front of the 10-foot rooster at the Minneapolis Farmer’s Market. This was his suggestion, and it’s still the best first date destination I’ve experienced so far. He was tall, handsome, and friendly. He bought me a jar of salsa and an iced tea, and he asked me out to dinner.

Our third date still ranks as one of my all-time favorites: The Minnesota State Fair. We sat with the butterflies. We scurried through the haunted mansion. We ate buckets of French fries. We walked and walked, and talked and talked, for hours. We closed down the fair. And when we returned to my car in the deserted parking lot, I discovered that I’d locked my keys inside.

I was mortified. But as we waited for AAA to arrive, we laughed and talked some more. It was sweet and silly, and I’ll never forget it. I was falling for him. My heart pounded.

But…my gut twisted too.

I’d felt that gut twisting before. Quite a few times, actually. But, for years, I hadn’t paid much attention to it. (Or, more accurately, I’d never known it was something I could or should pay attention to.) In the past, the only things I’d known to listen to were the pounding of my heart saying, “YOU LIKE THIS GUY AND HE LIKES YOU,” and the cacophony of rules in my head yelling, “BE NICE. BE AGREEABLE. BE TRUSTING AT ALL COSTS.”

By this point in my journey, however, I’d learned that my gut was usually dead-on. I knew it shouldn’t be ignored. And, over the course of our weeks together, I’d heard this guy tell me a certain something that just didn’t seem true. More than once. Each time, my gut twisted tighter.

I was pretty sure I was being lied to, but the thing about lies is you either have proof or you don’t. So you can wait around to see if it’s a lie, or you can trust the voice in your head saying, “SOMETHING ISN’T RIGHT HERE” and you work with that.

Oddly, it wasn’t even a big thing this guy seemed to be lying about. I wouldn’t have cared either way about the story he was telling. But that seemed concerning in itself. Why lie about something so benign?

Yet here it was. My heart was pounding and my gut was twisting.

So I had a choice, which was a good news/bad news situation. Good news because I finally realized I had a choice. Bad news because this choice was making me very uncomfortable. My lifelong rules were screaming in my head. My soft, eager heart was pounding in my chest. And this guy was sending me sweet texts and asking to see me again. Why would I want to rock this boat?!

Deep down, though, I knew it was time to practice breaking those rules, or at least bending them. It was time to trust my gut instead of blindly trusting the words I was being told.

The breaking point

So, a few days later, I said something I’d previously thought a nice girl shouldn’t say. Something I’d once believed was rude and insulting and forbidden. Something along the lines of: “I know you said X, but I happen to know Y, so I’m just curious why that seems to contradict. Can you help me understand?”

And that’s when things became more clear.

He was furious. His words were harsh and biting. He accused me of the very things the voices in my head accused me of. He hung up on me.

My heart sank.

I now had more evidence than just my gut. I still didn’t know for sure whether or not he’d lied, but I knew how he responded to someone who dared to question him. It seemed he’d prefer I just follow my old rules.

That was telling.

And so, that day, I walked away from a potential relationship with a guy I really liked. It was hard. My heart disagreed with this decision. I was sad. And I felt shaky. My body wasn’t used to breaking that rule, and I was uncomfortable in my own skin. Plus, I wasn’t certain I’d handled the whole thing very well. (I probably didn’t. After all, I was practicing.)

But, here’s what I know for sure: By breaking that rule and having the courage to ask a perfectly reasonable question, I gained the assurance that I can do life differently—even when decades of ingrained rules, and my own emotions, and a person I like were telling me not to.

The saving of my life

Is it too extreme to say that this saved my life? I’m not trying to imply that, had I not learned to break some rules, I would have ended up with an axe murderer for a boyfriend. What I am saying is that, if I had ended up with an axe murderer, I might have politely stayed.

I do know this: my life—the part of me that is alive and vibrant and vital and in process—has absolutely been saved by this practice of rule breaking. The part of me that is me has been set free from the prison of oppression and silence.

My life—the part of me that is alive and vibrant and vital and in process—has absolutely been saved by this practice of rule breaking. The part of me that is me has been set free from the prison of oppression and silence.

Yes, the work has been hard and messy. And, yes, it’s very much still ongoing. But it’s been oh so very worth it.

I will probably always have to do more work than others to reset my default message of “Be different, but don’t differ.” But, these days, I’m working on following a new set of guidelines: “Be different. Be brave. Be honest. Be you.”

And from here on, I’ll be a rule breaker at heart.

Teresa, thank you for your note and for sharing where you’re at. I’m sending you love in the grief and loss. I sooooo get it. Keep taking good care of your beautiful self. xo

This story feels so much like mine, but instead of questioning a weeks old relationship, I decided to confront a three-year situation by finally standing up for myself and my needs.

It was…violent, to say the least. But I’m never going back to my passive, meek, agreeable self. Not when my own life and safety are on the line.

Thank you for writing this.

Oh Mykki. In your case, it truly was your life that was saved. How very courageous and difficult and painful to leave a three-year relationship, especially with violence involved. I am so sorry that was your reality, so inspired by your strength, and so glad you are safe and sound. Thank you for sharing your story. Keep taking good care of yourself. xo

“Be different. Be brave. Be honest. Be you.”

“Be Different, Be yourself”. Thank you for sharing this.

The article is exceptionally good and straightforward. This is precisely what I require.

I absolutely loved this story. Thank you so much for sharing. It sounds like you’ve been though a lot and have learned from it. Keep breaking the rules! You’re most certainly on the right track.

Thank you so much, Nikki. Here’s to all the beautiful gifts that come from breaking the rules. xo

And I’m doing it because it makes me happy.”

Personal Essay Example:  The Most Influential and Impactful People in My Life

Typically, high school students have a best friend that is relatively the same age as them. Well, my best friend is a middle-aged man. My best friend is my dad. When I think of someone who has impacted my life, my mind immediately goes to him. I think about all the things I have told him that can only come from a certain amount of trust. When you share a decent amount of trust with someone, a bond seems to form, one unlike any other. A bond that makes a person your best friend. My dad is and always will be my best friend.

For as long as I can remember, basketball has been one of my dad’s favorite things. He would always talk about his teams, who they were going to play, and how well the competition would be. My dad has coached girls basketball for eleven years, ranging from coaching seventh grade to ninth grade. I have always admired how connected my dad was with his teams. When I would go to his games, I could see how much trust he had in his players and how much trust they had in him. While playing a school sport, it is guaranteed that there will be some amount of drama. Players would try to tear the team apart by fomenting drama or parents will be insatiable with their child’s playing time. I heard about all of this at home. I would hear about how frustrated my dad was getting because he heard a parent complaining to another parent about his coaching skills. It has always been hard seeing him get frustrated with these sorts of things because he doesn’t normally let the words of parents get under his skin. He rarely brings up what they say and he barely ever shows that he is paying attention to what they are saying.

My dad has always been the kind of guy to push me to be my absolute best. He’s not the kind of guy to let me get away with putting half of my effort into anything. At work, my dad is a manager. Well, the manager of his department. He comes home all the time talking about how his coworkers will make him so mad because they seem like they don’t even want to be there. My dad has always told me, “If you’re going to do anything, always leave it all out there.” My dad and I both get very frustrated with ourselves when something is not going the way we want it to. My dad has managed to find something he calls the Reset Button. When he presses the Reset Button, he moves on from whatever is bothering and upsetting him. This magical button has never helped me. Brief exchanges of looks between me and my dad have always seemed to be my Reset Button. When I am frustrated and I make eye contact with my dad, it is almost like an entire conversation happens in thirty seconds. I don’t know if my dad means for that to happen, but it does. The words he says by saying nothing always seemed conducive to me. Like I know that no matter what happens, he is always going to be proud of me.

I have always been a gullible person. You say something to me and I will believe it. I have a hard time with confrontation; therefore, I always believe the best in people and put all my trust in them. My dad; however, people have to earn his trust. When we have conversations about my gullibility, the conversation almost always ends with me in tears. My dad always tells me that if I continue to believe the best in people, they will always run me over. I have never really comprehended what he meant. I would hear what he said, and I’ve heard it multiple times, but I continue to put all my trust and believe the best in everyone. My dad has never told me why he continuously asks me to stop being so gullible. Maybe it was because he got hurt in the past believing people too much and he doesn’t want me to go through that same pain; however, I have never been able to ask him why.

Collecting sports cards has become an obsession of my dads. Taking up an entire room in our house to be exact. To spend time with my dad, I went to a card show with him. As we rode in the car, I realized I had no idea what to expect going into the building; however, the excitement on my dad’s face made the uneasiness disappear. As we walked up to the exposition center and through the halls, I could see the excitement flowing from him. If you were to compare my dad and a kid in a candy shop at that exact moment, I truly believe you wouldn’t be able to tell a difference. When we finally got to the part of the building that was holding the card show, the countless tables full of objects ranging from cards to signed shoes astounded me. My father; however, was tremendously comfortable with the crowded environment. He made his way through the tables speaking the card addict lingo and by the time we were walking out the door, he was leaving with exactly what he had gone in looking for.

Car rides are always my favorite when I am with my dad. The things we talk about are all over the place. When you get in the car, you never really know what is going to happen. We could talk about sports, college, drama, or even the things that go on at home. My dad has always been the parent I feel more comfortable going up and talking to. When in the car with my dad, I feel safe. I feel like I can say anything and know that he is going to listen. Most of the time, when I am stressed about school, I always find myself talking to him about it in the car. At times, it feels like I am just talking to myself, but when that happens, I know my dad is listening to every word I say. I would say my dad is a very observant person. He always wants you to say everything and have your full stance before he chimes in with another component.

While my dad can be straightforward, he is also one of the most humorous people I know. My dad will always try to make us laugh and it always brings a smile to the whole family. When my dad busts out his dance moves from back in the day, the amount of laughter that fills the room is astronomical. Or when he unleashes his vocals, that’s a household favorite. If one of us kids has a bad day at school, my dad will tell us a funny story from work. I wouldn’t say my dad is a people pleaser, but I think that when he truly wants to make someone’s day, he will find a way to make them smile. The amount of joy that my dad has in him seems to surprise some people. Some people will say that my dad is scary. When really, once you get to know him, he is a pretty exceptional guy.

My dad has always told me and my siblings that no matter what we decide to do in life, he will support us no matter what. The belief in knowing that my dad has my back has always been so reassuring to me. When I decided to no longer take part in a sport that I had been participating in for what seems like forever, I truly thought my dad was going to be frustrated with me. I didn’t want him to believe I was just giving up. When he wasn’t upset, it took me by surprise. It had made me feel like the love my dad had for me had overridden his love for the sport and that he just wanted me to be happy. My whole life, having my dad’s approval on everything has been so important to me. One of my biggest goals ever since I was little has been to make my dad proud. My dad has been understanding of every decision I have made. When I decided on my career path, I could see how proud I was making him. The approval of my parents when choosing where I want to go to college and what I want to do after has always been important to me. I know no matter what I choose to do, my dad will be there and be my biggest supporter and scream my name the loudest at either my accomplishments or at my failure. I know he will be proud I tried and he will always be there to pick me up if I fall.

Dad, you have been one of the most influential and impactful people in my life. You have made me see things from a different perspective. You have helped me get through things that I wouldn’t have been able to get through on my own. You have had conversations with me about things that are incredibly important to consider regarding my future. You are someone I feel like I can always go to, no matter the reason. You have made me laugh harder and more uncontrollably than anyone else. You have made me feel safe, and you have made me feel loved. Dad, I am so grateful for everything you have done for me. You are my forever best friend.

‘At 51, My Mom Became My Surrogate—And Helped Make Me A Mama’

After struggling with infertility, Breanna Lockwood shares how she received the ultimate gift.

a couple of women smiling

As soon as my daughter was born, the doctors handed her directly to me and the whole world stopped. She was healthy, perfect, and looked exactly like my husband. Our surrogate was also healthy, stable, and, officially, a grandma. My mom had helped make me a mama.

My daughter Briar is now 3. She is super spunky and has a big personality. She's kept us on our toes since the day she was born. And she knows she came from Grandma’s belly. They have an extremely close relationship and get to see each other almost every day. Briar is too young to fully understand the concept, but my family decided that our surrogacy story would always be a regular part of our life.

text

My husband and I were high school sweethearts, and when we got married in 2016, we immediately tried to start a family. After eight months with no luck, I went to my ob-gyn, who referred us to a fertility specialist in Chicago. First, we tried intrauterine insemination (IUI), a procedure that boosts the chances of getting pregnant by placing a sperm directly in the uterus. The first round was unsuccessful, and I was impatient, so we switched to in vitro fertilization (IVF), the most effective type of fertility treatment, in which an egg is fertilized by sperm in a lab before being transferred directly into the uterus.

I ended up having six unsuccessful IVF transfers, including two that ended in miscarriage —once after the second transfer and then again with twins. I was also diagnosed with Asherman syndrome after my miscarriage with the twins due to damaged scar tissue on the inside of my uterus, making future pregnancies more difficult and high risk.

At the time, all my friends were pregnant, and I felt so isolated. Every month I built the strength to try another round of IVF, and each time it didn’t work out, I was crushed. It was a vicious cycle. Infertility also took a serious toll on my body. I was pumping myself with hormones, my body was changing, and I was fatigued, tired, and emotional. The countless procedures, blood draws, transfers, and exams were unpleasant and painful. It felt as if I were in medical stirrups every day.

Eventually, my doctor suggested we look into surrogacy . It took some time to come around to the idea, and of course, I also had extreme sticker shock. Surrogacy can run anywhere from $50,000 to $250,000, and honestly, we couldn’t afford it. Still, it felt like my only option at that point, so I was devastated.

“What if I was your surrogate?” my mom texted me one day.

The text came out of the blue. My mom was 50 at the time. She’s a two-time Boston marathon runner and triathlete and is incredibly healthy. She is my best friend, and I’m her only daughter, so we’ve always been close. But I was still processing my emotions after the failed IUI and IVF, so I told her to drop it. Her suggestion felt like a silly, unrealistic, outlandish idea, and I didn’t even want to get my hopes up. But she was persistent and continued to remind me that she was confident she could be my surrogate.

About two months later, at a routine checkup at the fertility clinic, my mom came to support me. At the end of the exam, my doctor brought up surrogacy again, and my mom chimed in saying she had offered to be my surrogate. I was a little annoyed and embarrassed because it felt like such a crazy idea. But the doctor was clearly considering the idea and offered to run some preliminary tests.

There was never an exact moment when we decided that my mom would be my surrogate.

As she passed each health screening with flying colors (her health report looked better than mine!), we cautiously continued the process. My husband was supportive, trusting that as a very logical, realistic person, I had thought through all the outcomes. He also understood there are a lot of ways to grow a family and appreciated that this could be our path forward.

A few weeks after that initial doctor’s appointment, I saw a People magazine cover at work featuring a surrogate carrying a baby for her own son in Nebraska. I took the magazine home and contacted the mother and son. I wanted to get some answers. My husband and I even drove to Omaha to meet their physician.

All of us—my mom, my husband, and I—had to undergo an extensive psychological exam before starting the surrogacy process, meeting with a psychologist who made sure we were emotionally and mentally stable and ready for this journey. We all had to be on the same page with the right intentions. My mom and I had lawyers representing each of us (everyone had to be in legal agreement and legally protected), and they walked us through every contract, clause, and detail. We discussed all possible outcomes, including what to do in case of a medical emergency.

At this stage, my husband and I also needed to save money and wanted to support my mom throughout the entire process, so we sold our home at the end of 2019 and moved in with my parents.

text

Once all the screenings, evals, and paperwork were complete, we did an embryo transfer with my mom on February 25, 2020.

None of it felt real. I was emotionally in a dark place after years of infertility and loss, and to make matters worse, COVID-19 hit two weeks later. The world was shutting down, and my mom, who was already considered high risk for COVID infection due to her age, was trying to carry a pregnancy. My baby.

Throughout the entire first trimester, doctors were cautiously optimistic that the baby was developing at a normal rate, but after my history with the miscarriages, I was pessimistic. We held our breath during every appointment, scan, and test.

It wasn’t until the 20-week anatomy scan that I finally felt a wave of relief. My baby girl was growing and healthy. I was still reserved about celebrating, but I tried to let my guard down. We officially announced my mom’s pregnancy to friends and family and posted about it on social media. Of course, strangers online will always have their opinions about our unique surrogacy journey, but our family and friends only celebrated and supported the extraordinary miracle.

Throughout my mom’s pregnancy, we spent our days together. As my husband threw himself into nursery projects, my mom told me about every feeling, symptom, and craving, and I clung to each detail. It made us even closer. Her pregnancy never felt weird or awkward, and I didn’t harbor any jealousy or resentment.

a person wearing a mask

Sometimes it was difficult during routine doctor's appointments since the focus was always on my mom. She was the patient, but as the mother of my baby, I sometimes wished the doctors spoke directly to me and asked questions. (Still, the staff did a great job of including my husband and myself in every conversation and never made us feel like outsiders.) I didn’t hold on to any of those feelings for long because I was just so completely and utterly grateful for my mom’s sacrifice.

My daughter was born on November 2, 2020—World Fertility Day.

She was born via an emergency C-section because doctors were concerned about her heartbeat during delivery. We were still in the throes of the pandemic, and while my doctor originally said we couldn’t go into the operating room—which I expected and made peace with—at the last minute, they let me into the room. It was the happiest day of my life.

We now live 20 minutes away from my parents, and I see my mom almost every day. We have pictures in our home of her pregnancy.

a group of women smiling

I definitely want to have another baby and recently started going through IVF again. Last year, I got pregnant, but my second daughter was born sleeping [stillborn] at 25 weeks due to a complex heart defect. And once again, I had to pull myself out of a dark hole, process my emotions, and get back on my feet to try again. I’m open to going through another surrogacy, and my mom has offered to carry for me again, but I want to keep her healthy and safe right now.

Although infertility has been the most devastating, difficult thing I’ve gone through, it’s ultimately a story of resilience. It’s financially taxing, emotionally draining, and physically challenging, but at the end of the day, it’s about how many times I get back up and keep going. My mom’s offer was the most selfless, beautiful gift. It showed me that motherhood can come in all different ways, and I carry that idea with me now.

I woke up very early on my birthday because I had to dress up in casual clothes for school . The day before, all my candies were ready that I would distribute in the classroom.

My mother prepared my favourite breakfast and gave me a big chocolate bar for lunch as well. I went to school and the whole class sang for me and congratulated me. It was the turn to distribute sweets.

My best friend and I went to all the teachers to distribute toffees and we had a great time there. Moreover, it was an incredible feeling. My friends were all singing for me and eager to come to my birthday party later in the evening.

My Birthday Party

The birthday at my school was memorable but the birthday party at my home made the day even more memorable. Also, my mother invited all my friends from school and the colony to the party.

I received so many presents and we played a lot of games. We played games like musical chairs, tag, egg-and-spoon races, and more. There were so many songs playing so everyone did a special dance too.

The highlight of my birthday party was definitely my huge birthday cake. As I love superheroes, my mother got the cake customized with the superhero theme. It was very tasty too and in my favourite flavour.

I spent a lot of time with my family and friends that day. Everyone liked the return gifts as well and went home with a big smile on their faces.

IVF ruined my life. What I learned from years of failed fertility treatments

Three years, five egg retrievals, 10 embryo transfers, 19 embryos and $165,000 later, and I’m exactly where I started. Only, broke and broken.

Warning: This personal essay discusses failed fertility treatments and mentions late-term miscarriage. Please read with caution, especially if you or a loved one is currently experiencing infertility or fertility treatments of any kind.

April 21-27 is National Infertility Awareness Week. All week, TODAY will be sharing stories to raise awareness of what it is like to experience infertility.

In the infertility community, toxic positivity reigns supreme, and the words “hope” and “miracle” are carelessly tossed around — as if they have real power. Do I sound cynical? Perhaps I am. But I don’t think I’m wrong, either.

For many people, empty promises like “it only takes one” seem to help them cope with the trauma of infertility, but I never found them helpful. Three years, five egg retrievals, 10 embryo transfers, 19 embryos and $165,000 into my in vitro fertilization journey, words like “hope” and promises like “it only takes one” feel like a slap in the face.

I didn’t plan on doing IVF . When I first decided to become a single mother by choice , I thought I would adopt. But adoption is extremely cost-prohibitive, and the restrictions and application process seemed to me impossible for a single woman of average means. Then I looked into fostering, but I learned quickly that to foster, you need to meet specific child-proofing safety standards, even for a teenager. My house was built in 1900, and there were structural concerns — the stairs were too steep and not deep enough, for example — that made fostering a no-go, too.

It seemed to me that having my own biological child was my only viable option. The next step was to see a fertility specialist and find out what my options were. Just a few weeks before my scheduled appointment, the news of COVID-19 broke, and everything shut down . I had no idea when I would get the chance to see a doctor, so I decided to try ICI (intracervical insemination) at home to see if I could get pregnant without waiting for the doctors. It’s pretty common among LGBTQ folks to try ICI before moving onto doctor-assisted fertility treatments, and I found a sperm donor through an app that connects LGBTQ people with donors.

Unfortunately, after a year and five tries, I had three chemical pregnancies and no baby. The clinics had reopened by then, so I made a new appointment, and drove into Boston with Hope by my side.

My IVF journey started rocky. I suppose that should have been a sign of things to come.

Insurance denied me coverage because I couldn't prove that I'd been having sex (with a man) for a year without getting pregnant. I couldn’t afford to pay the amount of money local hospitals wanted out of pocket without insurance, so I sold my house, moved back home and found a low-cost clinic in New York, about a 3.5-hour drive from where I live.

Still, I had Hope.

They warn you that IVF can take a few cycles before it can work. You go in thinking you are prepared for that eventuality, but nothing can prepare you for the first failed transfer. “Let’s get you pregnant!” the doctors say cheerfully as you lie on the table, holding your breath against the pain of the speculum while you watch the ultrasound machine. They instill Hope with their positivity. At home, you look up when your due date will be. You think about what kind of birthday parties your child will have.

Then, two weeks later, your heart sinks as you stare at the results of your pregnancy test. “HCG (Quantitative) Value < 0.”

Even in the online support groups, they don’t tell you that it may never work. “Don’t give up,” people say. “It’ll happen for you. It only takes one.”

But for me, that was never true. I finally got pregnant after four embryo transfers. I transferred two embryos on that fourth attempt, and though I lost one at 7 weeks, the second held strong. I named him Lawrence. I set up his nursery. My sisters had started planning my baby shower. I made him a Christmas stocking, and my father bought him a stuffed bear from FAO Schwarz. I sang to him and whispered promises every night as I fell asleep.

Then, at my 17-week scan, the words, “I can’t find a heartbeat” sent my world reeling out of focus.

“Wait to announce until after twelve weeks,” is the advice everyone gives. “Then you know you’re safe.”

But they’re wrong. There is no safe. No one warns you that there is no such thing as “safe.” All my hopes and dreams came crashing down around me as I listened to the doctor explain that I’d need a D&C (dilatation and curettage), or else I could go septic. Nothing was ever the same again when I woke up from surgery, and my rounded belly was flat once more.

No one prepares you for the conversation about what to do with your baby’s remains. No one prepared me for the moment when I broke down sobbing after the funeral director opened the door and asked, “Are you Lawrence’s mom?” because I knew that was the only time in my life I would ever hear those words spoken aloud.

And then, the poison drives in deeper. “After a miscarriage, your chances of conceiving go way up,” the doctors explain. “You have another embryo; you should try again soon.”

So, I tried once more. It failed — but now I was in it all over again. The taste of Hope lingered on the tip of my tongue. You just need to try one more time . So I did.

This is what my journey was like. Every time I lost Hope entirely, someone was there whispering the poison back into my ear. “Just try one more time — don’t give up yet.”

The medication was torture on my body. I promised myself it would be worth it, but after two years of injecting hormones into my body, I’d gained 40 pounds. My clothes didn’t fit anymore, and my confidence was at an all-time low.

After my third retrieval, and sixth transfer, my doctor discovered an infection in my uterus that causes infertility. Here was an answer. The infected tissue was surgically removed. As much as I fought against Hope, there had to be a chance that it would work now right? Maybe a glimmer of Hope was okay, so long as I remained cautious.

Another retrieval — this time with a more aggressive method. Something called “priming,” where you take a growth hormone, progesterone, estrogen and vitamins like CoQ10 in the months leading up to the egg retrieval. I primed for four months. I didn’t know the growth hormone would cause rapid weight gain. I gained another 45 pounds in just those few months. It came on so quickly that my body ached. I went from being an avid hiker to struggling to dress myself without having to catch my breath.

“Priming will increase egg quality and quantity,” was the promise. There it was again — Hope.

But again, that didn’t work for me. My retrieval after priming yielded the worst results of any of my previous ones, the lowest quality embryos, and the lowest quantity. Not only that, but the medications caused so much stress to my ovaries that immediately after my retrieval, my right ovary quite literally exploded.

I spent that night in the emergency room, sobbing uncontrollably because I couldn’t breathe, the agony was so intense. The doctors kept giving me dose after dose of painkillers, and nothing touched the pain.

And yet, somehow, they were able to save my ovary. After a terribly slow and painful recovery, my ovary was in perfect working condition again.

And there it was, all over again: Hope.

So, why not try one more time … ?

IVF is an incredible gift. The science behind it is astonishing — and yet, it’s not enough. Three years, five egg retrievals, 10 embryo transfers, 19 embryos, $165,000 and over 80 pounds of weight gained — and I have nothing to show for it. It’s not the doctor’s fault, nor is it my fault. Objectively, I can recognize that. But as I look back on who I used to be three years ago, the confident, happy, hopeful young woman who dreamed of raising a family of her own, I can’t help but think that despite its magnificence, IVF ruined my life.

IVF is an incredible gift. The science behind it is astonishing — and yet, it’s not enough. ... I can't help but think that despite its magnificence, IVF ruined my life.

I am a broken shell of the person I used to be. I have nightmares; I have inescapable bouts of depression. I can’t look at an ultrasound image without choking back tears.

I will never be the same again. IVF did that to me. Hope did that to me. I wish there was more transparency around IVF — I wish there was more honesty about what it’s really like. Would I have gone forward with it if I had known how it would destroy me? In truth, I can’t answer that question. I don’t know.

What I do know is that right now the pain is still so fresh that I can’t help but regret my decision to do IVF . I know it’s not the same for everyone — there are so many people in the world who have had wonderful success with IVF. I am happy for those people, but I’m also heartbroken for myself, and everyone who has a story like mine.

To spend all that money and go through all that physical and mental torture only to come up on the other side empty-handed and less than you were before is devastating — and we don’t talk about it nearly enough. Instead, we let toxic positivity drown out the voices of those who are suffering, making us feel isolated, alone and broken.

Maybe sharing my story can help start that conversation.
