FRENCH FOR THE FUTURE The 2023 National Essay Contest is open!

French for the Future reveals the theme of the 2023 National Essay Contest! Students will ponder the following topic:

Convince the 2024 Olympic Committee that your "incredible talent" should be selected as a new Olympic discipline!

Since 2005, the contest has enabled students in Grades 10, 11 and 12 (secondaire 4 to CEGEP in Quebec) to win a scholarship to continue their post-secondary studies completely or partially in French. This year, 98 bursaries ranging from $1,000 to $20,000 will be awarded by our 15 partner institutions:

  • University of Ottawa, ON
  • Glendon Campus, York University, ON
  • Université Sainte-Anne, NS
  • Université de Montréal, QC
  • Université de Moncton, NB
  • Université de l'Ontario français, ON
  • Université de Saint-Boniface, MB
  • University of British Columbia, BC
  • Campus Saint-Jean, University of Alberta, AB
  • Université de Hearst, ON
  • Simon Fraser University, BC
  • Collège Boréal, ON
  • University of Lethbridge, AB
  • La Cité universitaire francophone - University of Regina, SK
  • Collège de l'Île, IPE

Students can enter in one of two categories: French as a first language or French as a second language.

In addition to easing the path to post-secondary education by providing financial support, the contest aims to encourage students to continue their education in French after high school. For Maxine Paris, it's a choice that will have long-term benefits:

"I chose to pursue my studies in French because I live in a place where French is a minority language, and I want to ensure that future generations can have access to a French-language education like I did" - Maxime Paris, winner of a scholarship for La Cité universitaire francophone at the University of Regina, in 2022-2023.

Students are invited to write a 750-word essay, in French, and submit their composition in the appropriate category by December 15, 2023. Winners will be announced in March 2024.

Details of the scholarships to be won and further information are available on the contest web page :

2019-2020 National Essay Contest: and the winners are…

Ottawa, March 4, 2020 – French for the Future is pleased to reveal the winners for its 15th National Essay Contest. This year, more than 500 students from grade 10 to grade 12, coming from all across the country, have tried their hand. Their original essay was centered on this question:

“On June 17th, 2019, Canada has declared a climate emergency. If you were put in charge of leading the government, how would you respond to this emergency?”

Through this theme, French for the Future provided an occasion for French First Language (FFL) and French Second Language (FSL) students to develop on the concrete and polarizing subject that is Climate Emergency. This contest was an occasion for them to elaborate on the importance of participating in environmental discussions, and propose concrete action plans to reduce their ecological footprint.

These topical issues have also challenged the panel of judges, constituting of teachers, who appreciated the experience this year. For Geneviève Forget, a teacher in Gatineau, these numerous essays centered around innovation and adaptation towards climate changes are reassuring: “What beautiful essays! I learned a lot, and the students have very good ideas. It’s very reassuring.” . The ingeniosity of the participating students was also underlined by a representant of this competition’s sponsors:  “What a pleasure it was to read these essays! Some of the ideas proposed by the students were very refreshing” , commented Diego Creimer, representative of the David Suzuki Foundation.

90 scholarships were to be won during the Contest, totalling $282,000 . This is a great opportunity for the winners to build their confidence in themselves, and their language level, as well as to consider a post-secondary pathway in French at one of our 13 partner institutions. This was great news for Chloe Bella Khouri, recipient of a $1,000 bursary for the University of Ottawa, ON: “I would like to thank you again for this incredible gift. Your contest has pushed me to enrich my vocabulary and learn more on subjects such as the governmmental protocols and the impact of pollution on our ecosystems. Thank you infinitely to French for the Future for allowing me to go to my dream university.”

French for the Future also wishes to give young winners the opportunity to share their ideas with the general public, by making all of the winning essays available online on its website .

Here’s the list of this year’s 20 biggest winners, under their respective categories :

Sisler

French for the Future National Essay Contest Winner

national essay contest french for the future

Jourmae is a Grade 12 student who will be graduting from the French Immersion Program in June. She has continuously worked on her French Immersion studies here at Sisler, and will be furthering her education after she graduates by attending the Université de St. Boniface. Jourmae plans to complete a Bachelor of Arts in French Studies with a specialiation in French literature with the hopes of attending Law school at the Univeristy of Ottawa in the future.

Each year, French for the Future assigns a different essay topic for the National Essay Contest. This year's topic was "How did fake news change your relationship with the media?".

Throughout her essay, Jourmae uses the metaphor of friendship to explain her thoughts, and concludes that fake news can influence decision making due to lack of paying attention to details and not taking the time to carefully revaluate the situations.

Earlier this month, French for the Future announced the long-awaited results of it's 16th edition of the National Essay Contest. Jourmae won a $3000 scholarship to the Université de St. Boniface for her essay, "Mes anciennes amies, les fausses nouvelles?" .

Jourmae wanted to send a big thank you to Mme. Threadkell and Mr. Cegayle for their help and support.

Sisler High School sends a huge congraulations to Jourmae for her hardwork and dedication to French education. We are so proud of you!

Dakota Crossing St. Vital

Sometimes, having a way with words can pay off.

Two local high school students recently won $1,500 scholarships in a national essay contest sponsored by French for the Future, an organization which aims to promote “self-confidence, leadership, and a passion for French and francophone cultures.” Nearly 450 students submitted essays based on the idea of convincing the 2024 Olympic committee to include a new discipline for games, which would be the student’s own “incredible talent.”

“With the nature of the theme, we were anticipating imaginative proposals,” said Geneviève Gobeil, program manager at French for the Future in a statement. “Even with that expectation, we were surprised by the creativity of the submissions! With each new essay we received, we wondered: what will the discipline proposed be this time?”

Paige Fontaine, a Grade 12 student at Collège Jeanne-Sauvé, won a $1,500 scholarship in French for the Future’s national essay competition, in the French as a second language category.

Hélène Marcoux, a Grade 12 student at Centre scolaire Léo-Rémillard, won a $1,500 scholarship in the French as a first language category for her essay on why ballet should be in the Olympics.

“I kept seeing, as a child, there were so many disciplines in the Olympics. I was like, ‘Wow, dancers are athletes, too,’” explained Marcoux, a lifelong ballet dancer. “Break dancing was added, and I was like, ‘We should discuss this.’”

Marcoux entered the contest after seeing a post about it on social media.

“I really just wanted to see what would happen,” she said. “Now I feel like, maybe writing is a talent I might have too that I didn’t know I had. I found out I was pretty good at coming up with arguments and explaining myself.”

The scholarship will help with her tuition next year, as Marcoux plans to take University 1 courses at Université de Saint-Boniface.

Meanwhile, Paige Fontaine, a Grade 12 student at Collège Jeanne-Sauvé, won a $1,500 scholarship in the French as a second language category. Fontaine heard about the opportunity while researching scholarships.

“Since I am a French immersion student … considering university in French, I decided that this scholarship would be a perfect opportunity to put my French skills to the test,” said Fontaine, who wrote her essay about woodcarving.

Hélène Marcoux, a Grade 12 student at Centre scolaire Léo-Rémillard, won a $1,500 scholarship in French for the Future’s national essay competition, in the French as a first language category.

“A few years ago, my grandpa taught me how to wood-carve and I thought that that would be the perfect subject of my essay since, not only is it something that I enjoy doing, it is also very unique,” Fontaine said. “Woodcarving isn’t a skill for everyone, therefore it makes the talent more interesting — the many benefits that woodcarving has, and how the final piece itself is something that you don’t want to miss.”

The scholarship not only provided Fontaine with funds for post-secondary education, but also a confidence boost.

“This (shows) that I can perform well in my second language … and has given me more confidence in my French abilities,” she said. “Due to this, I feel more confident that I want to pursue my studies in a French environment so that I can continue being fluent in both French and English.”
