Frequently asked questions

The act of putting someone else’s ideas or words into your own words is called paraphrasing, rephrasing, or rewording. Even though they are often used interchangeably, the terms can mean slightly different things:

Paraphrasing is restating someone else’s ideas or words in your own words while retaining their meaning. Paraphrasing changes sentence structure, word choice, and sentence length to convey the same meaning.

Rephrasing may involve more substantial changes to the original text, including changing the order of sentences or the overall structure of the text.

Rewording is changing individual words in a text without changing its meaning or structure, often using synonyms.

It can. One of the two methods of paraphrasing is called “Fluency.” This will improve the language and fix grammatical errors in the text you’re paraphrasing.

Paraphrasing and using a paraphrasing tool aren’t cheating. It’s a great tool for saving time and coming up with new ways to express yourself in writing.  However, always be sure to credit your sources. Avoid plagiarism.

If you don’t properly cite text paraphrased from another source, you’re plagiarizing. If you use someone else’s text and paraphrase it, you need to credit the original source. You can do that by using citations. There are different styles, like APA, MLA, Harvard, and Chicago. Find more information about citing sources here.

Paraphrasing without crediting the original author is a form of plagiarism , because you’re presenting someone else’s ideas as if they were your own.

However, paraphrasing is not plagiarism if you correctly cite the source . This means including an in-text citation and a full reference, formatted according to your required citation style .

As well as citing, make sure that any paraphrased text is completely rewritten in your own words.

Plagiarism means using someone else’s words or ideas and passing them off as your own. Paraphrasing means putting someone else’s ideas in your own words.

So when does paraphrasing count as plagiarism?

  • Paraphrasing is plagiarism if you don’t properly credit the original author.
  • Paraphrasing is plagiarism if your text is too close to the original wording (even if you cite the source). If you directly copy a sentence or phrase, you should quote it instead.
  • Paraphrasing  is not plagiarism if you put the author’s ideas completely in your own words and properly cite the source .

Ratings and Reviews

By far One of the best apps that ive used of its matter. I had it on my Android for several months and purchased an iphone and was thrilled to see the app; but wassup with Not having Greek. The was the whole reason for using it for so long?? :(

Does what it says

Although I don’t think it’s worth downloading just because it only gives you 40 uses until you have to pay, which IMO disqualifies it from being able to call itself a “free” app. I don’t think it’s fair for others to give it such low ratings simply because it doesn’t do what they want it to do. Especially when they make make no misleading claims to do such things. This app does what it says and does it correctly so im giving it a 5 stars rating just to even out the bogus bad ratings. Now as far as the app itself it’s really simple and doesn’t compete with Grammarly at all in terms of natural sounding results or length of the sentences. Especially for being a one trick pony. I certainly wouldn’t pay that’s just my honest opinion no disrespect or rudeness intended.

Has LOTS of Potential — But Needs some Improvements!

What I like (as a polyglot student learning multiple languages) — is that you can instantly see a series of very helpful synonyms AND some excellent example sentences (with audio) showing how to use these words in context. PROBLEM: There is no ability to translate either the synonyms (that may have slightly different shades of meaning) OR the example sentences that you provide. IF you could simply make it so that I can SELECT (and copy) the example sentences in the language — then I could at least PASTE this in an on-line dictionary and see the translation. This could be an EASY FIX which would make this an OUTSTANDING ( = 5-star) app — but without the ability to copy the example sentences, this app is DISAPPOINTING and lacking (which is why I only gave it 2 stars ... ). Thank you for considering!

Sophisticated AI Technology

With technology evolving, the meaning of traditional paraphrasing has changed as well. Earlier, we used to refer to paraphrasing as the process of changing words and phrases while retaining the original meaning.

But now, paraphrasing is more than just replacing words with their synonyms. With the involvement of AI and its various branches, we have made paraphrasing more sophisticated and accurate. It is not limited to altering words anymore, now it works on how to understand the human language, and emotion, and generate accurate results.

sophisticated-aI-technology

AI or Artificial Intelligence refers to the science and engineering of building intelligent computer programs. AI is used to make computers understand things like the human mind is capable of and respond accordingly. Since paraphrasing is a task that needs creativity, ordinary computer programs won’t be able to understand the process nor they can respond naturally. That’s why we use AI technology in paraphrasing to make the computer sophisticated enough to understand human language, and human emotion and provide the correct result. AI combines computer science and a well-fed dataset to solve paraphrasing problems.

AI has several branches and sub-branches that are used in paraphrasing –

1. NLP (Natural Language Processing)

2. Machine Learning

3. Deep Learning

machine learning deep learning

NLP (Natural Language Processing) is a branch of Artificial Intelligence that concerns the ability to make computers understand natural language in the same way humans can. It helps the computers understand the text and spoken words along with their different emotions and meanings. NLP uses rule-based human language models called linguistics such as Machine Language, Deep Learning, and statistical models and combines them to make computers understand human language.

NLP and paraphrasing have a very close relationship. According to Wikipedia, “Paraphrase or paraphrasing in computational linguistics is the natural language processing task of detecting and generating paraphrases.”

Artificial Intelligence

Machine learning is a subfield of artificial intelligence (AI) and computer science that utilizes data and algorithms to mimic how people learn, progressively improving its accuracy. In simple words, machine learning is a branch of AI that trains machines on how to learn from data, detect patterns, and make decisions with minimal manual intervention.

This subfield of NLP focuses on learning from existing data and making decisions about new data based on previous learning. Machine learning is important in paraphrasing because it learns emotions, contexts, and patterns of the existing text data or voice data and then independently uses the learnings on new data. Without the intervention of the machine learning model, it would be extremely difficult for programmers to train the computer about individual data.

Deep Learning is a sub-field of Machine Learning.

Deep learning refers to the sophisticated development of machine learning algorithms. The subject has received a lot of attention recently, and for good reason. Deep learning has made things possible that were not possible with only Machine Learning.

We use deep learning models in paraphrasing to bring more accuracy to the result. With the help of machine learning and deep learning, the computer can learn from the existing data, go through the complexities of the data, break and analyze them, and finally respond as humans can. With deep learning, computers require fewer human interventions and can independently make decisions based on the structured dataset and the training.

What is paraphrasing and how to do it right?

What is paraphrasing and how to do it right

Paraphrasing is the method of converting someone else's words into your own.

The correct way of paraphrasing

Before going further, we must understand that paraphrasing is not about replacing words with their synonyms. If you rewrite a text-only by changing the words, it will look awkward and readers might not understand the message properly.

We are not saying that it’s impossible to paraphrase only by changing the words. But manually, it takes time. Using a good paraphrase app or online tool can do the trick and give you more accurate results within a short time.

There are some rules we should follow to paraphrase correctly

  • Always keep the key phrases in their original form.
  • Don’t just copy the sentence structure from the source. Structure sentences in your own way to make paraphrasing more creative.
  • Check for plagiarism. If your text is identical to someone else’s text, you might get in trouble for stealing content. Use a good plagiarism checker tool to make sure your text is unique.
  • If you are using quotes, make sure to cite those quotes correctly.
  • It is important to credit the source whenever you paraphrase. Also, avoid using phrasing that is too faithful to the previous text. Otherwise, you risk being accused of plagiarism.

The Relation between Paraphrasing and Plagiarism

Plagiarism is taking pieces of someone else's content and presenting them as your own without crediting the author, therefore claiming ownership.

Also, keep in mind that plagiarism might be accidental, such as incorrectly formed phrases or poor paraphrasing. In simple terms, unless you include a direct citation, your text should not be marked as copied, even if you credited the original author.

Paraphrasing is the skill to rewrite content in such a way that it passes all plagiarism detection algorithms with flying colors. You should be able to summarize an author's main ideas and put them into your own words.

Paraphrasing prevents plagiarism.

Plagiarism and paraphrasing both provide you with the idea of the original text. But while plagiarizing makes it direct stealing and unethical, paraphrasing makes it more creative and legal. Paraphrasing helps to offer the same concepts while not repeating what has previously been published someplace. That's a terrific method to rely on someone else's text without duplicating it.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1. what are some of the most essential writing tools online.

  • Paraphrasing tool/article rewriter tool –everyone who needs unique, high-quality text within a short time should know about rewriter tools.
  • Plagiarism checker – there is no better option than a plagiarism checker when you want to detect similar texts. The online tool can comb through billions of online pages and detect similar texts within seconds.

  • Word counter – keeping count of words is essential in writing. A word counter tool efficiently handles counting words and characters and allows you to control the length of your content easily.

2. Is plagiarism bad? Why or why not?

Plagiarism is bad for every writer. Plagiarism can get you into trouble for stealing other people’s work. Sometimes people plagiarize accidentally due to not checking their content for the identical text before publishing. But sometimes, people also plagiarize content intentionally as well. Plagiarizing discredits the original author and the content loses its unique value.

3. Is paraphrasing similar to plagiarizing?

Plagiarising and paraphrasing are not the same things. Plagiarizing means using someone else’s words and directly using those as one’s own content without modifying anything. Plagiarizing hurts the sentiment of the original author and discredits his/her efforts. On top of that, the original content loses its unique value due to plagiarism. Paraphrasing, on the other hand, is the ultimate tool to prevent plagiarism. It lets you use other people’s content by changing the words and sentence formats while preserving the original meaning. So, you can easily avoid plagiarism with the help of paraphrasing.

We’ve got your back, but it’s good to know how to stay away from trouble by yourself. Read on to get acquainted with various rewriting strategies.

✏️ How to Rephrase: Strategies to Avoid Plagiarism

Plagiarism is the act of stealing someone’s intellectual property. It can be deliberate but often happens unintentionally. In academia, this mostly means taking someone’s idea and not crediting the source. But don't worry: there are many ways avoid this. Here are the basics:

  • Always using a plagiarism checker . This way, you’ll know for sure that what you’ve written is 100% yours.
  • Quoting means adopting the original author’s wording directly and putting it in quotation marks. Make sure to resort to direct quoting only if it strengthens your argument, or if the quote is particularly expressive.
  • A summary is a shortened version of the source. You don’t paraphrase its entire contents but break it down into the crucial parts.
  • Taking notes while reading articles. Try to formulate the central ideas in simple words. This way, you'll automatically have a first draft of what you want to paraphrase.
  • Lastly, changing the sentence structure while paraphrasing will help you sound natural.

Keep reading to learn more about rewording sentences and quotes.

📖 How to Reword a Sentence

Paraphrasing is very similar to summarizing. Both are key skills for writers. With these recommendations, you’ll always rewrite correctly and without plagiarizing.

To some terms, such as "globalization," you’ll hardly find alternatives. However, common words can easily be replaced.

Use various conjunctions or break the sentences up.

Replace nouns with verbs, verbs with adjectives, or vice versa.

This includes:

  • Switching the voice from passive to active and the other way round.
  • Turning clauses into phrases and vice versa, e.g., by omitting or adding pronouns.

This being said, the most effective method to rephrase something is by using all these techniques combined. Here are some examples:

“Categorization has become a major field of study, thanks primarily to the pioneering work of Eleanor Rosch, who made categorization an issue. (Lakoff 1987: 7)”

“Eleanor Rosch, who was the first to point out the importance of categorization, paved the way to make it an important subject. (see Lakoff 1987: 7)”

In this version, you can see multiple strategies at work. The structure is different, and all possible words were substituted. Yet, it still contains the original meaning. That’s precisely what we want!

Let’s have a look at this variant instead:

Paraphrase:

“Categorization is now a major field of study. It can be credited to the pioneering work of Eleanor Rosch, the first person to make categorization an issue.”

While the voice is switched in this paraphrase, it still is too close to the original. It uses the same wording and doesn’t credit the source.

Here’s another example:

“In a rare instance of consensus, linguists agree that grammar is extremely complex and hard to properly describe. (Langacker 2008: 27)”

“Linguists rarely agree with each other, but they all acknowledge that grammar is problematic and that it’s nearly impossible to explain it correctly. (Langacker 2008: 27)”

This version has synonyms and adds an extra preposition. Unfortunately, the alternatives "problematic" and "explain" tamper with the original meaning. Let's see how to paraphrase this paragraph properly:

“While linguists rarely share the same opinions, they all admit that grammar is almost impossible to depict comprehensively due to its intricate nature. (Langacker 2008: 27)”

In this case, the concept stays the same. The phrases are changed; there are a new structure and extra conjunction. Perfect!

💬 How to Reword a Quote

If you want your assignments to sound natural, provide the proper context for your quotes. It includes introducing them with phrases such as according to, in the words of, as defined by . Citing is appropriate, if:

  • The wording is especially valuable;
  • You need to support a claim;
  • You want to debate and analyze the author’s position.

When writing, use a mix of direct quotes and paraphrases with an emphasis on the latter. Once you cite a source, adhere to specific standards. Stick to any one of these styles throughout your entire text:

  • An in-text APA style reference can be either narrative , e.g. Zaliznyak & Šmelev, 1997, or parenthetical , e.g. (Zaliznyak & Šmelev, 1997).
  • MLA formatting style requires the author’s last name and the page, for example, Clasmeier 37.
  • When citing Chicago style , all source data (name, title, publisher, year, page) goes into the footnotes.

J.D. Vance: The Math on Ukraine Doesn’t Add Up

A photograph of a large stack of tube-shaped artillery shells, stretching out of the frame in every direction.

By J. D. Vance

Mr. Vance, a Republican, is the junior senator from Ohio.

President Biden wants the world to believe that the biggest obstacle facing Ukraine is Republicans and our lack of commitment to the global community. This is wrong.

Ukraine’s challenge is not the G.O.P.; it’s math. Ukraine needs more soldiers than it can field, even with draconian conscription policies. And it needs more matériel than the United States can provide. This reality must inform any future Ukraine policy, from further congressional aid to the diplomatic course set by the president.

The Biden administration has applied increasing pressure on Republicans to pass a supplemental aid package of more than $60 billion to Ukraine. I voted against this package in the Senate and remain opposed to virtually any proposal for the United States to continue funding this war. Mr. Biden has failed to articulate even basic facts about what Ukraine needs and how this aid will change the reality on the ground.

The most fundamental question: How much does Ukraine need and how much can we actually provide? Mr. Biden suggests that a $60 billion supplemental means the difference between victory and defeat in a major war between Russia and Ukraine. That is also wrong. This $60 billion is a fraction of what it would take to turn the tide in Ukraine’s favor. But this is not just a matter of dollars. Fundamentally, we lack the capacity to manufacture the amount of weapons Ukraine needs us to supply to win the war.

Consider our ability to produce 155-millimeter artillery shells. Last year, Ukraine’s defense minister estimated that the country’s base-line requirement for these shells was over four million per year but that it could fire up to seven million if that many were available. Since the start of the conflict, the United States has gone to great lengths to ramp up production of 155-millimeter shells. We’ve roughly doubled our capacity and can now produce 360,000 per year — less than a tenth of what Ukraine says it needs. The administration’s goal is to get this to 1.2 million — 30 percent of what’s needed — by the end of 2025. This would cost the American taxpayers dearly while yielding an unpleasantly familiar result: failure abroad.

Just this week, the top American military commander in Europe argued that absent further security assistance, Russia could soon have a 10-to-1 artillery advantage over Ukraine. What didn’t gather as many headlines is that Russia’s current advantage is at least 5 to 1, even after all the money we have poured into the conflict. Neither of these ratios plausibly leads to Ukrainian victory.

Proponents of American aid to Ukraine have argued that our approach has been a boon to our own economy, creating jobs here in the factories that manufacture weapons. But our national security interests can be — and often are — separate from our economic interests. The notion that we should prolong a bloody and gruesome war because it’s been good for American business is grotesque. We can and should rebuild our industrial base without shipping its products to a foreign conflict.

The story is the same when we look at other munitions. Take the Patriot missile system — our premier air defense weapon. It’s of such importance in this war that Ukraine’s foreign minister has specifically demanded them. That’s because in March alone, Russia reportedly launched over 3,000 guided aerial bombs, 600 drones and 400 missiles at Ukraine. To fend off these attacks, the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky, and others have indicated they need thousands of Patriot interceptors per year. The problem is this: The United States only manufactures 550 per year. If we pass the supplemental aid package currently being considered in Congress, we could potentially increase annual production to 650, but that’s still less than a third of what Ukraine requires.

These weapons are not only needed by Ukraine. If China were to set its sights on Taiwan, the Patriot missile system would be critical to its defense. In fact, the United States has promised to send Taiwan nearly $900 million worth of Patriot missiles, but delivery of those weapons and other essential resources has been severely delayed, partly because of shortages caused by the war in Ukraine.

If that sounds bad, Ukraine’s manpower situation is even worse. Here are the basics: Russia has nearly four times the population of Ukraine. Ukraine needs upward of half a million new recruits, but hundreds of thousands of fighting-age men have already fled the country. The average Ukrainian soldier is roughly 43 years old , and many soldiers have already served two years at the front with few, if any, opportunities to stop fighting. After two years of conflict, there are some villages with almost no men left. The Ukrainian military has resorted to coercing men into service, and women have staged protests to demand the return of their husbands and fathers after long years of service at the front. This newspaper reported one instance in which the Ukrainian military attempted to conscript a man with a diagnosed mental disability.

Many in Washington seem to think that hundreds of thousands of young Ukrainians have gone to war with a song in their heart and are happy to label any thought to the contrary Russian propaganda. But major newspapers on both sides of the Atlantic are reporting that the situation on the ground in Ukraine is grim.

These basic mathematical realities were true, but contestable, at the outset of the war. They were obvious and incontestable a year ago, when American leadership worked closely with Mr. Zelensky to undertake a disastrous counteroffensive. The bad news is that accepting brute reality would have been most useful last spring, before the Ukrainians launched that extremely costly and unsuccessful military campaign. The good news is that even now, a defensive strategy can work. Digging in with old-fashioned ditches, cement and land mines are what enabled Russia to weather Ukraine’s 2023 counteroffensive. Our allies in Europe could better support such a strategy, as well. While some European countries have provided considerable resources, the burden of military support has thus far fallen heaviest on the United States.

By committing to a defensive strategy, Ukraine can preserve its precious military manpower, stop the bleeding and provide time for negotiations to commence. But this would require both the American and Ukrainian leadership to accept that Mr. Zelensky’s stated goal for the war — a return to 1991 boundaries — is fantastical.

The White House has said time and again that it can’t negotiate with President Vladimir Putin of Russia. This is absurd. The Biden administration has no viable plan for the Ukrainians to win this war. The sooner Americans confront this truth, the sooner we can fix this mess and broker for peace.

A portrait of Peter Dutton

Lech CPC stairs

  • X (formerly Twitter)

Lech Blaine has written a Quarterly Essay on Opposition Leader Peter Dutton, who remains something of an enigma to many Australians.

Since becoming leader, Peter Dutton has been determined to defeat the Albanese government, not by winning back the heartland metropolitan seats they lost in 2022, but by tearing off the outer suburban and regional electorates that have traditionally voted Labor.

Lech traces the rise of Peter Dutton from outer suburban schoolkid, to Queensland police officer, to a new kind of Liberal leader.

NPR suspends senior editor Uri Berliner after essay accusing outlet of liberal bias

Npr suspended senior editor uri berliner a week after he authored an online essay accusing the outlet of allowing liberal bias in its coverage..

paraphrase essay app

NPR has suspended a senior editor who authored an essay published last week on an online news site in which he argued that the network had "lost America's trust" because of a liberal bias in its coverage, the outlet reported.

Uri Berliner was suspended Friday for five days without pay, NPR reported Tuesday . The revelation came exactly a week after Berliner publicly claimed in an essay for The Free Press, an online news publication, that NPR had allowed a "liberal bent" to influence its coverage, causing the outlet to steadily lose credibility with audiences.

The essay reignited the criticism that many prominent conservatives have long leveled against NPR and prompted newsroom leadership to implement monthly internal reviews of the network's coverage, NPR reported. Berliner's essay also angered many of his colleagues and exposed NPR's new chief executive Katherine Maher to a string of attacks from conservatives over her past social media posts.

In a statement Monday to NPR, Maher refuted Berliner's claims by underscoring NPR's commitment to objective coverage of national issues.

"In America everyone is entitled to free speech as a private citizen," Maher said. "What matters is NPR's work and my commitment as its CEO: public service, editorial independence, and the mission to serve all of the American public. NPR is independent, beholden to no party, and without commercial interests."

Berliner rails against NPR's coverage of COVID-19, diversity efforts

Berliner, a senior business editor who has worked at NPR for 25 years, argued in the Free Press essay that “people at every level of NPR have comfortably coalesced around the progressive worldview.”

While he claimed that NPR has always had a "liberal bent" ever since he was hired at the outlet, he wrote that it has since lost its "open-minded spirit," and, hence, "an audience that reflects America."

The Peabody Award-winning journalist highlighted what he viewed as examples of the network's partisan coverage of several major news events, including the origins of COVID-19 and the war in Gaza . Berliner also lambasted NPR's diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) policies – as reflected both within its newsroom and in its coverage – as making race and identity "paramount in nearly every aspect of the workplace.”

"All this reflected a broader movement in the culture of people clustering together based on ideology or a characteristic of birth," he wrote.

Uri Berliner's essay fuels conservative attacks on NPR

In response to the essay, many prominent conservatives and Republicans, including former President Donald Trump, launched renewed attacks at NPR for what they perceive as partisan coverage.

Conservative activist Christopher Rufo in particular targeted Maher for messages she posted to social media years before joining the network – her  first at a news organization . Among the posts singled out were  a 2020 tweet that called Trump racist .

Trump reiterated on his social media platform, Truth Social, his longstanding argument that NPR’s government funding should be rescinded.

NPR issues formal rebuke to Berliner

Berliner provided an NPR reporter with a copy of the formal rebuke for review in which the organization told the editor he had not been approved to write for other news outlets, as is required of NPR journalists.

NPR also said he publicly released confidential proprietary information about audience demographics, the outlet reported.

Leadership said the letter was a "final warning" for Berliner, who would be fired for future violations of NPR's policies, according to NPR's reporting. Berliner, who is a dues-paying member of NPR's newsroom union, told the NPR reporter that he is not appealing the punishment.

A spokeswoman for NPR said the outlet declined to comment on Berliner's essay or the news of his suspension when reached Tuesday by USA TODAY.

"NPR does not comment on individual personnel matters, including discipline," according to the statement. "We expect all of our employees to comply with NPR policies and procedures, which for our editorial staff includes the NPR Ethics Handbook ."

NPR staffer express dismay; leadership puts coverage reviews in place

According to the NPR article, Berliner's essay also invoked the ire of many of his colleagues and the reporters whose stories he would be responsible for editing.

"Newsrooms run on trust," NPR political correspondent Danielle Kurtzleben said in a post last week on social media site X, though he didn't mention Berliner by name. "If you violate everyone's trust by going to another outlet and [expletive] on your colleagues (while doing a bad job journalistically, for that matter), I don't know how you do your job now."

Amid the fallout, NPR reported that NPR's chief news executive Edith Chapin announced to the newsroom late Monday afternoon that Executive Editor Eva Rodriguez would lead monthly meetings to review coverage.

Berliner expressed no regrets about publishing the essay in an interview with NPR, adding that he tried repeatedly to make his concerns over NPR's coverage known to news leaders.

"I love NPR and feel it's a national trust," Berliner says. "We have great journalists here. If they shed their opinions and did the great journalism they're capable of, this would be a much more interesting and fulfilling organization for our listeners."
