Studentships and doctoral training

Get a studentship to fund your doctorate.

UKRI studentships offer funding for doctoral research. They also offer you access to training, networking and development opportunities to help you build a research and innovation career.

Our expectations for research organisations, supervisors and students are set out in the statement of expectations for doctoral training .

You could get:

  • a minimum stipend of £19,237 per year for your living costs, which is paid to you in regular instalments
  • support for your tuition fees (minimum £4,786 per year)

The stipend is usually non-taxable and does not need to be paid back. Some research organisations may offer more if you study in London, or they or one of their collaborators might decide to top up the payment. This will be outlined in the studentship advert from the research organisation.

We normally pay the support for tuition fees directly to your research organisation.

The levels given here are for the academic year 2024 to 2025. UKRI’s approach to doctoral stipend and fee levels will be reviewed through the  new deal for postgraduate research .

Additional support for your doctoral studies

As a UKRI-funded doctoral student, you may be able to access additional funding to cover the cost of other related training and development opportunities.

This could include:

  • conference attendance
  • language training
  • overseas research visits
  • internships or placements with a non-academic partner

The availability of support will depend on the research organisation and the training grants they have on offer. You should contact the research organisation you are interested in applying to, to find out what you could get.

Extra support if you have a disability

If you have a disability, you may be entitled to a Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA) on top of your studentship.

You should speak to your research organisation’s disability advisor to assess your needs. They can help put the right support in place, including a DSA application if necessary. You cannot claim DSA directly from UKRI.

DSA helps to cover the cost of any additional support that a person studying for a doctorate might need as a result of a disability, mental health problem or specific learning difficulty.

The allowance covers:

  • non-medical personal assistance
  • specialist equipment
  • extra travel costs
  • general expenses

Find out more about DSA in our framework .

If you are a research organisation you can download claim forms and guidance for DSA .

Who can apply

Any prospective doctoral student wishing to study at a UK research organisation, including prospective international students, can apply for a UKRI studentship.

All UKRI-funded doctoral students will be eligible for the full award, both the stipend to support living costs, and home-level fees at the UK research organisation rate.

How to find opportunities

Many UK research organisations offer some form of studentship funding from UKRI. These opportunities will depend on the subject you want to study and will normally be advertised by the research organisations.

Research organisations may have additional opportunities that do not involve UKRI. UKRI supports around 20% of all UK-based postgraduate researchers. You should speak to the research organisation you are interested in to find out what studentships are available.

You could also consider using a specialist website like   FindaPhD  to look for opportunities.

When to apply

Research organisations set their own deadlines for applications.

Many open for applications early in the academic year and close in January or February. This is not a hard and fast rule. It is important that you check the deadlines for the research organisation where you want to study.

How to apply

You cannot apply to UKRI for a studentship. You must contact the research organisation you are interested in studying with and use their application process.

For doctoral students who are already studying with a studentship, there are opportunities to get additional funding to support placements that are separate from your doctorate.  Find training and development opportunities .

Funding available

There are three different levels of funding available for new students: fully funded, partially funded, and fees only, all at the home fee rate.

  • Full-time and Part-time applications are welcome : Funding for part-time study will be pro rata at 50% of the full-time rate.
  • Overseas fee-paying candidates: These awards will cover Home fees only. If you are selected for interview you will need to demonstrate that you can fund the difference in fees for each year of your registration. This is currently £11,288 for the academic year 2023/24 and it should be noted that tuition fees increase slightly each year. You would therefore need to find at least £33,864 over the 3 years, plus the yearly increase.

Note that if you were shortlisted for the Techne 2024 funding competition but were unsuccessful you will automatically be considered for these awards.

Fully-funded studentships

Up to 15 awards are available.

Fees: Home tuition fees only for 3 years full-time or 6 years part-time. For 2023/24 this is £4,712 full-time or £2,356 part-time.

Stipend: 3 years full-time or 6 years part-time.

The full-time doctoral stipend for 2023/24 is £20,622 per year; levels are likely to rise slightly for the following years but have not yet been confirmed.

Applications for part-time study are welcomed and will receive pro-rata funding for both tuition fees and stipend.

Race Equality studentships

Fully-funded studentships for black, asian and minority ethnic applicants (home students only).

We encourage applications from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic students and have set aside a number of the studentships listed above for applicants who identify as having these ethnic backgrounds. In addition to the funding, there will be a programme of support and mentoring available to you.

Successful applicants will be offered a place on our RISE Research Leadership Academy , which is designed to develop candidates' leadership skills within academia.

Note that these awards are open to Home fee-paying students only.  Read more about who is eligible for home fee status .

To apply, please follow the process listed below and state ‘Race Equality Studentship' at the top of your Studentship Application Statement.

Once we have confirmed the availability of a potential supervisory team, we will offer application and interview support through a faculty mentor who will be a member of academic staff. To access support in advance of submitting your application please email the relevant Research Student Coordinator (listed below) and ask to be put in touch with a mentor in your subject area.

We are also hoping to have current research students with Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic backgrounds available to discuss their experiences with you. If you would like to take up this opportunity, please email [email protected] to arrange an informal online meeting or phone call.

Note that a representative from the Kingston University People of Colour Staff Network will be part of the awarding panel.

Unsuccessful applicants who reach the interview stage will be offered a feedback meeting to assist with future applications.

Watch a video from one of our current award holders, Salema Foot, whose research focuses on the academic lived experiences of Black postgraduate students in the UK.

Read more about Kingston's approach to reducing the degree awarding gap .

Kingston Alumni studentships

At least one of the fully-funded PhD studentships listed above will be awarded to a Kingston Alumni who has completed an undergraduate and/or masters level degree course at Kingston University or its predecessor institutions. Please note 'KU Alumni application' on your Studentship Application Statement.

Partial studentships

Up to 5 awards are available.

Total contribution to fees and stipend: £11,000 per year for three years full-time or £5,500 per year for six years part-time. Payments will be made towards tuition fees and any remaining funds will be paid as a stipend.

Stuart Hall Foundation – Queen Mary Studentship

An additional Studentship place is being offered by the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, which is open to applicants who are eligible for Home tuition fees, and who meet the criteria for the award.

Information about this award will be provided by the Faculty in due course.

If you have already applied to the PhD programme but think you meet the criteria for this award, please contact [email protected]  immediately. You would need to update your Statement of Purpose document to provide details of your eligibility.

BAME Studentships for UK Candidates

Queen Mary encourages applicants from UK candidates in BAME (Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic) groups who have been previously under-represented in this process.

The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences will be offering two fully funded doctoral studentships (tuition fees and stipend at the UKRI London rate) to UK applicants from a BAME background. Awards are tenable for up to three years. Applications will also be considered from students who are currently in the first year of a full-time PhD programme, or the first two years of a part-time programme. To be eligible to apply for these studentships the applicant must be UK permanent resident from a BAME background, and eligible to pay home student fees. Queen Mary’s goal is to recruit outstanding and diverse candidates across the full range of studentships.

About the Studentship award

  • The award is for postgraduate PhD research students only.
  • The award will cover all tuition fees whether at the Home rate or the International rate. It is therefore open to both UK and international applicants. In addition, the recipient will receive an annual maintenance grant, set at UK Research Council levels. Part-time recipients will receive the award on a pro-rata basis.
  • Applicants should be aware that the School of Law PhD programme has various entrance requirements which applicants are expected to meet, including, for example, academic performance requirements relating to previously taken taught postgraduate degrees in a law or law-related subject.
  • The award is renewable over three years of study while in full time enrolment, and six years of study while in part time study mode, subject to satisfactory annual progress reports.
  • At the end of the three years, research students sometimes need further time to complete their research and thesis. This is known as ‘writing up’ time. Students only move to 'writing up' when their supervisor confirms that the student has submitted a satisfactory first full draft of the entire thesis for the supervisor’s review and the Director of Graduate Studies is satisfied that the student can complete within the year. The writing-up period does not attract full tuition fees, although a reduced writing up fee may be payable. A student in writing up is responsible for his/her own living costs as well as for any writing up fee.
  • The award is for new applicants looking to enrol at the beginning of the coming academic year, in September 2024. Additionally, existing first year PhD students at Queen Mary who have already enrolled prior to September can apply for the award. To apply, a current student would need to submit an updated version of their Research Proposal via e-mail to [email protected]  confirming they wished to be considered for a Studentship award by the deadline.
  • The School of Law PhD programme only has one entry point each year – in September. Given that most LLM courses in the UK end with graduation in November (and that entry on to our PhD programme is dependent upon your obtaining a certain grade on your LLM so as to meet our academic entry requirements), so this means for applicants currently taking their LLM in the UK (but not at QMUL) where the date of graduation falls after September 2024, and/or for applicants requiring a UK student visa who are currently taking an LLM in the UK, including at Queen Mary, then an application this year is not possible unless they have previously already taken an LLM degree.
  • Successful recipients of this award may be required to undertake teaching and / or support duties within the School of Law.
  • The Studentships are awarded on the basis of academic excellence. The application process for these awards is highly competitive.
  • If you have any queries relating to the funding application process, please email the School of Law PhD Admissions Administrator, Mr G Skehan,  [email protected]

The deadline for Studentship applications to the School of Law is Wednesday 6 December 2023 . You must have completed both the main PhD application process, and submitted all your supporting documents, by this date. The selection process will then take place during the next couple of months and be completed in February 2024.

Notifying the School of Law of your application for Studentship funding

There is a section within the PhD online application form labelled ‘Other Information’. To notify us that you wish to apply for our Studentship award you will need to respond to the question: ‘How do you intend to finance your studies at Queen Mary?’ by choosing the option ‘I am a QMUL PG Research Studentship applicant’.

Without this notification, you will not be considered as a funding applicant. You will be treated as an applicant to our PhD programme only.

If you want to apply for Studentship funding and have already submitted your main application (without indicating that you wish to be considered for one of our funding awards) you must contact Mr Gareth Skehan, PhD Admissions Administrator, before the deadline by email on [email protected] , and state the award that you want to apply for. Without this specific email notification you will not be considered for Studentship funding.

Applicants can apply for more than one QMUL award simultaneously. Please see the relevant webpages about the other awards we offer for information on the notification process via our Online application system.

Submitting your PhD online application

Only applicants who have completed the online application process to the PhD programme prior to the funding submission deadline will be considered for funding. For information on how to make an application, what our entry requirements are, and what supporting documentation is required, see our PhD page .

To make an on-line application, you would need to visit this web-page and then click on one of the two buttons in the right hand column of the webpage (for either ‘full-time’ or ‘part-time’ study, depending upon which study mode you with to apply for).

Applicants are encouraged to contact an eligible academic staff member to secure supervision prior to submitting their main PhD application, and so prior to the funding deadline date.  Whilst applications submitted without supervision agreed will also be considered, it will aid any application for funding if they can show they have already secured supervision by the time the funding selection process takes place.

It is important to make sure that the School of Law has staff whose research interests and expertise complement your research project.  Information and guidance for applicants on how to contact academic staff can be found on the main PhD web-page, specifically in the ‘Finding a Supervisor’ section .

Queen Mary’s online application system requires applicants to confirm the name of a proposed supervisor (in the ‘Research Proposal’ section).

Finally, if you are wishing to apply for either an LISS DTP Scholarship or an LAHP Scholarship, please note these require an academic to have agreed to act as an applicant’s supervisor, and then complete and submit an application form in support of the funding application by the relevant deadline date (which is in late January 2024).  We therefore advise applicants to submit their main application no later than early December, to allow time for their Research Proposal to be considered as part of our review, and for a staff member to be appointed as a proposed supervisor in time for the relevant application documentation to be submitted prior to the deadlines in late January.

Project description :

Procurement and contracts are important in managing construction projects, especially risk management. However, previous manual review processes and early AI-based are known to be time-consuming and error-prone and do not address the huge data generated during the contract or procurement processes. Also, construction projects have suffered long from contractual risk, which will cause disputes in the future.

The normal contract document reviewing process to reduce risk has long been labour-intensive and can cause errors. An AI-automated detection method that addresses contractual risk and incorporates scope 3 emissions requirements is needed to address our current challenges in procurement and contracts.

The proposed project aims to develop an AI-powered contract specification classification model to automatically detect the contractual risks and the risk-taking party from each contract clause to help review the contract and reduce potential disputes in the future. The methodology adopted in this research will combine behavioural and design science.  The behavioural science will be used to explore the challenges, and the design will be used to develop system development of the AI-powered Natural Language Processing.

PhD studentship – 3 years full-time, commencing January 2024

About the role

An enthusiastic and highly motivated candidate is sought to support an ongoing research initiative at London South Bank University into the additive manufacture of thermoplastic structures. The project team at LSBU represents a coalescence of expertise in structural mechanics, additive manufacturing, artificial intelligence and digital design, with additional support and direction to be provided by our industrial partners.

Thermoplastic biopolymers hold great potential in the drive for net zero in construction and in fostering greater material circularity, while the development of digital design methods for 3D printing promotes the use of automated methods in structural design and construction practice. This project aims to refine a digital design method developed at LSBU for the robotic additive manufacture of structural-grade components from biopolymers or other thermoplastics derived from natural sources, e.g., cellulose. The predictive power of numerical models is to be enhanced through the use of machine learning, allowing greater flexibility and reliability in the digital design of polymer structural elements such as lightweight joists, bespoke structural connections, retrofitted components and load-bearing architectural features.

The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting structural analysis via finite element modelling of component geometries and structural optimisation informed by experimentally determined material behaviours. The candidate is expected to have some experience in the use of structural-mechanical analysis (finite element analysis) software in the context of structural or mechanical systems. In addition, knowledge of automation through scripting in languages like Python or C# (or similar) is desirable in order to run optimisation routines effectively. Some familiarity with machine learning or similar artificial intelligence approaches would be ideal, but training in this regard can be provided during the studentship. The successful candidate should be motivated to conduct their research independently and be comfortable liaising and working with stakeholders under the supervision of the Director of Studies (Dr Finian McCann) and the co-supervisors (Federico Rossi, Dr Luis Santos).

The work you will do

This role requires a very good MEng (1:1 / 2:1) or MSc (Merit or Distinction) graduate with proven experience in computational analysis for applications in structural or mechanical design, or industry experience to an equivalent level. You will be expected to work with a high degree of autonomy and manage a varied workload effectively with regular progress review meetings. Additionally, there will be a need to communicate technical activities and tasks to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, including the industrial partners on this project. This includes the preparation of journal articles, technical reports for industrial partners, and conferences papers and presentations.

The skills and experience you will need to be successful

You will have proven experience of applying structural-mechanical modelling software, e.g., Abaqus, Ansys Workbench, Karamba, LS-DYNA, to an MEng / MSc research level, or in an equivalent industrial R&D environment. The right candidate should have strong expertise in computational structural or mechanical analysis applied to structural design and/or mechanics with coding and automation skills, preferably in Python, C# or Rhino SDK.

Details about the role and How to apply

This is a full-time position funded for three years. The successful candidate must be enrolled before the end of January 2024 .

For an informal discussion, please contact:

Dr Finian McCann [email protected]

Associate Professor of Structural Engineering, School of the Built Environment and Architecture, London South Bank University.

Please note, the contact details listed are for enquiries only.

Interview and assessment process

It is expected that interviews will be held in early November 2023 .

Brief : Tsunami are one of the deadliest coastal hazards. Tsunami induced sediment scour at structure foundations is a major cause of structural failure during tsunami inundation events. Current engineering knowledge of the scour process is disparate and incomplete. This is due in part to the devastation caused by these waves rendering field surveys of limited use. Further the physical process of the scour is highly complex. This complexity means that numerical models are difficult set up and to run efficiently and physical models require large and specialized facilities too run. Thus, there is a lack of physical model data to understand the process and validate any numerical model. The practicing engineer is left with no way to predict the scour and therefore effectively mitigate structural vulnerability to it.

This project will look to provide a comprehensive look at the physical process and parameter sensitivity of tsunami scour at coastal structures. In addition, it will develop a design tool for practicing engineers to estimate the scour depth expected from a given tsunami event. This will be achieved through the combination of the analysis of an extensive unpublished data set of tsunami scour taken in a unique tsunami modelling laboratory and the development of a numerical model to extend the data and formulate a design equation.

Aims: To illuminate the physical process of tsunami induced scour at structures and develop a predictive equation of scour development and depth as a function of incident tsunami wave parameters.

Methods: The work will analyse an extensive laboratory data set of tsunami scour to illuminate the physical processes and influencing parameters. From this a numerical simulation will be developed and validated using the open source CFD software OpenFOAM . The numerical model will then extend the laboratory data to conduct a comprehensive parametric study of tsunami scour. From this a regression analysis will be performed to isolate the influencing parameters and develop a predictor equation.

Funding: The funding includes a yearly stipend (£18,622), inside London allowance (£2,040), support, training, and printing costs (£1,620), and the cost of a laptop in the 1 st year (£1,000). Funding is per year for three years full time home students only. The successful candidate will need to be enrolled for a January 2024 start.

Application Process : To apply upload your CV and complete this informal application https://forms.gle/qffx7GZkVDxBPRmX6

Applicants require a Bachelors (2:1 or better) or Masters degree in Civil engineering or a related field. This may include, but is not limited to Mechanical Engineering, Ocean and Coastal Engineering Physics, Earth and

Part funded PhD studentship.

This PhD research programme studentship is being offered by Dr Haydar Aygun at School of Built Environment and Architecture, London South Bank University Academic staff : LSBU People Finder

Background and rationale: Currently there are not any time efficient and low carbon acoustic system to monitor adverse changes in the built environment. There is a need for an engineering system to monitor adverse changes in the built environment.

Traditional environmental noise monitoring systems measure sound levels, store the data on internal memory card. Then the data is transferred to computer for analysing environmental noise parameters. They are expensive, time consuming, and contribute to carbon emission, especially for long term measurements. The costs of such a system are prohibitive, especially for developing countries. There is a need for a low cost, time efficient, and low carbon engineering system utilising artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning algorithms to monitor environmental noise remotely.

Aims: This PhD programme aims to design, build, and test an intelligent low-cost and low carbon noise monitoring system using green technology. The low carbon system will be capable of monitoring environmental noise for a longer

Methods: There is a growing need (regulation-driven) to monitor airports with a low cost, robust, and simple system. The AI and machine learning algorithms will be mitigating most of the laborious work. The expected research impact will show how such a system could be implemented around a noisy environment such as an airport to monitor environmental noise. An environmental sound monitor will be built and programmed using low-cost commercial electronics such as MEMS microphones, drastically reducing the cost of implementation. The system developed will be tested to international standards for compliance. Another new aspect of this research is that the system will be networked to create a platform. This platform would capture the sound environment and tag sound event spectrograms at the local level through Edge AI classification.

A central server will host the main AI. This will improve the accuracy of the classification through directed learning, without requiring user intervention. This will reduce the laborious nature of tagging unusual sound events which breach planning, construction, or demolition conditions.

Funding: The funding offered for this programme includes a yearly stipend (£18,622), inside London allowance (£2,040), support, training, and printing costs (£1,620), and the cost of a laptop in the 1 st year (£1,000). This funding is per year for three years full time. The successful candidate will need to be enrolled for a January 2024 start.

The selected PhD student should hold a BEng in Mechanical Engineering (2:1 or better), MSc in Acoustics, and experience in environmental noise monitoring, acoustic product development, analysing noise data, machine learning, and acoustic modelling.

You will be contacted via email if you are shortlisted for interview. We aim to complete the shortlisting process within 1 week of the advert closing date ( 1 November ). LSBU's on-line postgraduate application form will only be completed by the successful candidate after selection. The successful candidate will need to be enrolled from January 2024 due to the conditions of the scholarship. Informal enquiries to Dr Haydar Aygun [email protected] .
