Earth Day is April 22 in the United States and the day the spring equinox occurs in some parts of the world. It’s a day to reflect on the work being done to raise awareness of climate change and the need to protect natural resources for future generations. Protecting the earth can feel like an enormous, distant undertaking to young people. To help them understand that they can play a role by focusing on their backyards or school yards, educators can scale those feelings of enormity to manageable activities that make a difference.

GSDM Community Given New Beginnings and Endless Opportunities During 2024 ADEA Annual Session & Exhibition

From winning second place in student poster competition to being elected to officer appointments for various ADEA committees, sections, and special interest groups, the GSDM community was extremely active during the 2024 American Dental Education Association Annual (ADEA) Session and Exhibition, held from March 9-12 in New Orleans, Louisiana.

ADEA Leadership Institute Alumni Association Board Councilor Afsheen Lakhani, GSDM group practice director and clinical associate professor of general dentistry, participated in this year’s session in numerous ways, ranging from advising students on their poster presentations to leading workshops and seminars. In keeping with this year’s theme “New Beginnings, Endless Opportunities,” she said she was pleased to see many first-time GSDM attendees thrive with their presentations and officer appointments.

“GSDM was well represented this year by some first-time faculty, staff, and students as well as seasoned faculty and staff,” Lakhani said. “A highlight for me was how GSDM was one team, supporting and encouraging each other in all conference activities such as poster, workshops, presentations, and section/SIG meetings.”

GSDM Student Won Second Place in ADEA Student Poster Competition

Brionna Palmerino DMD 25, president and District 1 school representative for ADEA, won second place in the ADEA student poster competition for her poster entitled “A Generalizable TA Training Module for Predoctoral Courses.” GSDM faculty Marianne Jurasic DMD 95, Center for Clinical Research director, and Matthew Mara DMD 16 AEGD 17 Wheelock 19, assistant professor of general dentistry, served as Palmerino’s faculty advisors.

The goal of their research is to implement a generalized dental school teaching assistants (TAs) training module that would efficiently prepare incoming TAs, Palmerino said. Together, Palmerino, Jurasic, and Mara built a questionnaire, asking all GSDM course directors who use TAs how they select those individuals, what they are looking for in a TA, and what responsibilities their TAs would have. As of right now, the team is developing a preliminary version of the module based on the information they gathered and is looking for incoming students to join the research efforts.

“I just felt really validated that people also saw value in what I was doing,” Palmerino said. “It made me really proud to be a student at BU because I [realized] we already have all these opportunities to be involved in [academia] that a lot of other schools don’t have… I [saw how we could] really leave our legacy on the world of dental academia.”

GSDM Students, Faculty, and Staff Presented Posters

Four GSDM DMD students, along with their faculty/staff mentors, and 12 GSDM faculty/staff presented their original research during the conference’s poster presentation sessions.

Mara, who is the ADEA Council of Sections Administrative Board secretary, served as mentor/co-mentor to three GSDM students presenting posters: Palmerino, Kate Winebrake DMD 25, and Kayvon Baradar DMD 24. Mara said watching his mentees present their posters as the culminating experience of their Academic Dental Careers Fellowship Program was a full circle experience, as it reminded him of his first poster presentation experience as a student. He said that he couldn’t be more delighted with his students’ work.

“It’s been a pleasure to work so closely with these students over the past two years and see their projects evolve as they develop and grow as emerging researchers,” Mara said. “I strongly believe affording students with opportunities to present their research at national meetings is a critical experience that can help recruit some of our brightest students to careers in academic dentistry and I am glad GSDM provides so many students this exceptional opportunity.”

Marble said she plans to use this role to gain knowledge and insight about potential professional and educational development opportunities that she can bring back to GSDM.

“I am looking forward to helping document and facilitate discussions to address any ideas for improvement and development for Student Affairs that arise during my time in leadership,” Marble said. “I’m extremely excited for this opportunity.”

GSDM Community Displays Innovative Dental Ideas in Workshops and Seminars:

Researchers create a bodywide map of molecular changes linked to exercise and health

A Stanford Medicine-led effort to learn more about exercise’s molecular effects paints the broadest picture yet of why, in the health arena, sweat is king.

Exercise. It’s associated with increased muscle strength, improved heart health, lower blood sugar and just about every other physical improvement you can name. But how does regularly puffing away on a treadmill, biking up a steep hill or going for a brisk lunchtime walk confer such a dizzying array of health benefits?

We’re now closer to finding out, thanks to a vast new study led by Stanford Medicine. Researchers conducted nearly 10,000 measurements in nearly 20 types of tissues to uncover the effect of eight weeks of endurance exercise in laboratory rats trained to run on rodent-sized treadmills.

Their results highlight striking effects of exercise on the immune system, stress response, energy production and metabolism. They uncovered significant links between exercise, molecules and genes already known to be involved in myriad human diseases and tissue recovery.

The study is one of a series of papers published May 1 by members of a multicenter research group meant to lay the groundwork for understanding — on a bodywide, molecular level — exactly how our tissues and cells react when we push them to perform.

“We all know exercise is beneficial for us,” said professor of pathology Stephen Montgomery , PhD. “But we don’t know much about the molecular signals that manifest across the body when people exercise, or how they may change when people train. Our study is the first to take a holistic, bodywide look at molecular changes, from proteins to genes to metabolites to fats and energy production. It’s the broadest profiling yet of the effects of exercise, and it creates an essential map to how it changes the body.”

Montgomery, who is also a professor of genetics and of biomedical data science, is a senior author of the  paper , which published on May 1 in  Nature . Other senior authors are  Michael Snyder , PhD, the Stanford W. Ascherman, MD, FACS Professor in Genetics, and associate professor of medicine  Matthew Wheeler , MD. First authors are former genetics PhD student Nicole Gay, PhD; former postdoctoral scholar David Amar, PhD; and Pierre Jean Beltran, PhD, a former postdoctoral scholar at the Broad Institute.

Additional papers by Stanford Medicine researchers include a related published report in  Nature Communications  investigating the effect of exercise-induced changes in genes and tissues known to be involved in disease risk as well as a  paper  published on May 2 in  Cell Metabolism , which focuses on the effects of exercise on the cellular energy factors called mitochondria in various tissues. Montgomery is the senior author of the  Nature Communications  paper and postdoctoral scholar  Nikolai Vetr , PhD, is its lead author. Instructor of cardiovascular medicine  Malene Lindholm , PhD, is the senior author of the  Cell Metabolism  paper, and Amar is the lead author.

“These papers further highlight the multiple impacts exercise training has on metabolism and health,” Montgomery said.

A coordinated look at exercise

The researchers involved in the study and the other simultaneous publications are part of a national group called the Molecular Transducers of Physical Activity Consortium, or MoTrPAC, organized by the National Institutes of Health. The effort was launched in 2015 to investigate in detail exactly how physical exercise improves health and prevents disease.

The Stanford Medicine team took on a lot of the heavy lifting, studying the effects of eight weeks of endurance training on gene expression (the transcriptome), proteins (the proteome), fats (the lipidome), metabolites (the metabolome), the pattern of chemical tags placed on DNA (the epigenome), the immune system (the…you get the idea).

Let’s just call it the sweat-ome.

They performed 9,466 analyses on multiple tissues in rats as the animals were trained to run increasing distances and compared the results with those of rats that loafed about in their cages. They paid special attention to the muscles of the leg, the heart, the liver, the kidney and a type of fat called white adipose tissue (the kind of fat that accumulates as pounds pile on); other tissues included the lungs, brain and brown adipose tissue (a more metabolically active type of fat that helps burn calories). The combination of multiple assays — think of all those -omes! — and tissue types pumped out results numbering in the hundreds of thousands for non-epigenetic changes to more than 2 million distinct changes in the epigenome. The results will keep scientists hopping for years.

Although this study served primarily to create a database for future analysis, some interesting nuggets vaulted to the top. First, they noted that the expression of 22 genes changed with exercise in all six of the tissues they focused on. Many of these genes were involved in what are known as heat shock pathways, which stabilize the structure of proteins when cells undergo stress including changes in temperature (feel that burn?), infection or tissue remodeling (hello new muscle fibers!). Others have been implicated in pathways that reduce blood pressure and increase the body’s sensitivity to insulin, which lowers blood sugar levels.

The researchers also noted that the expression of several genes involved in Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, obesity and kidney disease was reduced in exercising rats as compared with their sedentary counterparts — a clear link between their studies and human health.

Sex differences

Finally, they identified sex differences in how multiple tissues in male and female rats responded to exercise. Male rats lost about 5% of their body fat after eight weeks of exercise while female rats didn’t lose a significant amount. (They did, however, maintain their starting fat percentage while the sedentary females packed on an additional 4% of body fat during the study period.) But the largest difference was observed in gene expression in the rats’ adrenal glands. After one week, genes associated with the generation of steroid hormones like adrenaline and with energy production increased in male rats but decreased in female rats.

Despite these early, tantalizing associations, the researchers caution that exercise science is nowhere near the finish line. It’s more like the starting gun has just fired. But the future is exciting.

“In the long term, it’s unlikely we will find any one magic intervention that reproduces what exercise can do for a person,” Montgomery said. “But we might get closer to the idea of precision exercise — tailoring recommendations based on a person’s genetics, sex, age or other health conditions to generate beneficial whole-body responses.”

Recommendation: Close Oak Ridge's Linden school, build another, expand 5; cost $69.5M

Recommendations including closing linden, expanding five other schools at estimated cost of $69.5m.

With Oak Ridge 's population growing, leaders of the city school system are recommending that a new elementary school be constructed on the west end and additions and renovations made to three of the elementary schools and two middle schools.

The recommendation also includes the eventual closing of the current Linden Elementary School because the current school site would be difficult - and expensive - to expand or become the site of a new school.

It also includes returning the fifth grade to the elementary schools and making Robertsville and Jefferson middle schools into junior highs again, holding sixth- through eighth-grades. Redistricting throughout the system would also be required to balance the student population sizes at the schools and relieve the new school building.

The potential cost: $69.5 million, which doesn't include buying land for a new school on the west end of Oak Ridge, where the population growth is projected to continue. It also includes keeping to a timeline that begins with acquiring the land this year, completing the design and putting out the new school construction project for bid by 2025. Delays in meeting the timeline could increase the construction costs by 5% a year, according to Cope Architecture , which is a contractor for the school system.

Oak Ridge Mayor Warren Gooch advised those officials studying the projections and needs to "seriously think about" a land swap of city-owned land for the new school, rather than buying property. In response to a question, Oak Ridge Schools Superintendent Bruce Borchers said no new school site has been chosen.

Why does Oak Ridge need a new school, expansion of other schools?

Officials with Oak Ridge Schools informed Oak Ridge City Council and city government administrators of the projected need for more space at a joint meeting last year. A similar meeting with the same groups, including the city board of education, city council, and involved contractors, was held again this year, Feb. 20, at the School Administration Building.

Borchers presented a PowerPoint presentation showing the student and city population projections and what is being recommended by a joint group made up of officials from the school system and city government called the Enrollment Committee . He said the city schools have a "three-year window" before the elementary schools are out of space. This is based on an average of 20 students per classroom. That 20-1 ratio is based on a combination of state law and Oak Ridge Schools recommendations aimed at being beneficial to students.

Key highlights of the presentation

• Based on current growth rates and existing or planned housing projects and new industries, Oak Ridge could add 2,000 new households by the year 2030 .
• 13 relatively new or expanding housing developments are projected to increase the city's population by nearly 5,000 people, to a total of about 38,417.
• Oak Ridge Schools' enrollment is 5,064, which is higher than expected. It's up from 4,657 in 2019. Linden and Willow Brook elementary schools, on the west end of the city, are at the biggest risks of running out of space because of an increasing student enrollment, Borchers said.

Recommendations from the school system and Enrollment Committee

• Complete the new Linden Elementary School, which will be a kindergarten through fifth-grade school for up to 800 students, by 2027 at a cost of roughly $32 million.
• Also by 2027, renovate and make additions to Willow Brook to increase the student capacity to 600. Cost estimate $6.5 million.
• By 2028, renovate and add additions to Glenwood and Woodland to increase Glenwood's capacity to 600 students and Woodland to 800. Estimated cost $12 million. Also by 2028, shift fifth grade from middle schools to junior highs and redistrict as needed.
• By 2032, make additions and renovations to Jefferson. Add two-story, 10-classroom addition, a two-story addition for expanded administration and addition for guidance/conference; expand cafeteria and add roof garden above, cover courtyard for multipurpose space, upgrade and address code deficiencies. Cost estimate: $8 million.
• By 2033, make additions and renovations to Robertsville. Add two-story, eight-classroom addition; renovate vacated spaces for expanded administration; expand cafeteria, upgrade infrastructure and address code deficiencies. Cost estimate: $69.5 million.

Who is on the Enrollment Committee ?

Why not keep Linden and build a fifth elementary?

Two words: The cost.

Operating five elementary schools would cost approximately $33.3 million over a 20-year period compared with that of operating four, according to Borchers' presentation. That includes staffing an additional school, utilities, and additional administration for the school.

In addition, the current Linden school would have to be expanded for more students, according to school officials and Cope Architecture. The land around the school - an estimated 21 acres, the mayor said - has unsuitable soil and depressions and significant site improvements would be needed, Cope architect Peter Ludman said. He mentioned that the area is prone to karst or sinkhole problems. The site is also challenging for parents picking up or dropping students off at school, school buses, and emergency vehicles. Making significant changes and renovations at the school, built in 1968, would require improvements to the utility infrastructure and to make the school uphold to current building code requirements and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) accessible.

This "would require gutting the building down to the support structure," according to the presentation document.

As Borchers told parents of students in Oak Ridge Schools by email after the joint board-council work session, "Our immediate ask of the city of Oak Ridge is to acquire land on the west side of the city and budget approximately $2.2 million dollars to create architectural design of a new school."

At the meeting, he said they would also continue to monitor the latest information on student enrollment and enrollment projections. The school system has also contracted with RSP Associates, described as a leading K-12 school planning company that does in-depth building capacity and student enrollment analysis.

"We're going to have to figure out how to pay for it," said council member Chuck Hope. He said students would always be Oak Ridge's top priority, but these needs would have to be balanced with the city's other needs and services for the population.
