SVRI Research Grant 2024 Open for Applications

Funding for innovative research proposals that will contribute to the prevention and response of violence against women, violence against children and other forms of violence driven by gender inequality in low and middle-income countries (LMICs).

The Sexual Violence Research Initiative (SVRI) is a global research network on violence against women and children, allowing role players in the field to connect and share research, work to influence policies and improve the lives of those who have experienced gender-based violence.

One of the goals of the 2020-2024 SVRI strategic plan is to strengthen the evidence base to improve policies and programmes to respond to and prevent violence against women (VAW) and violence against children (VAC) in low and middle income countries (LMICs). To achieve this goal, the SVRI Research Grant is available annually to support innovative research to improve prevention and response to VAW, VAC and other forms of violence drive by gender inequality in LMICs.

The types of projects that may be supported under this grant include:

  • Research projects that are either standalone projects or a component of a larger project that will guide efforts to effectively address or prevent VAW and VAC.
  • Qualitative studies that explore the effectiveness and process of creating change with innovative VAW and VAC prevention interventions or the acceptability, impact and process of change created by interventions that support and assist survivors of VAW and VAC.
  • Projects that aim to address the prevention and response to VAW and VAC together or simultaneously, or through a single intervention with distinct elements.
  • Projects that aim to understand how to integrate programming for VAW and/or VAC into other sectoral work and or large infrastructure development programmes.
  • Projects that develop innovative methods and tools for VAW and/or VAC research.
  • Projects that evaluate how to effectively expand tested interventions for preventing and responding to VAW and VAC.
  • Secondary analysis of existing data that provides insights into addressing VAW and VAC more effectively and sustainably.
  • Research on violence across diverse populations in situations of vulnerability, including but not limited to persons with disabilities, people living with HIV, older persons, indigenous peoples, LGBTQI+ people, refugees, internally displaced persons and migrants.
  • Projects that enhance understanding of sexual violence against children or adolescents, including research on interventions to prevent such violence and/or support child and adolescent survivors of such violence.

All projects under this call should focus on VAW and VAC prevention and/or response in LMICs.

To be eligible, applications should:

  • Be affiliated with a recognised, legally constituted research institution or organisation with existing research or programming capacity on VAW and VAC.
  • Involve partnerships (where appropriate) between multiple organisations eg a local NGO, practice-based agency and an academic institution, or local government and an NGO or an academic institution. Preference will be given to academic/researcher – practitioner partnerships.

Preference will also be given to proposals submitted and led by organisations based in LMICs. Organisations or consortia may submit up to two applications, though no organisation will receive more than one grant.

Grants of between $40,000 and $150,000 are available over an 18 month period.

Applications should be submitted by the closing date of 6 July 2023 (23:59 South African Time).

Developing Shared Research Agenda on Child Sexual Violence (CSV) for Low-and Middle-Income Countries

Together for Girls , We Protect Global Alliance , the SVRI and the Brave Movement , are co-creating a shared set of research priorities on child sexual violence (CSV) using a collaborative and inclusive process. Our collaborative approach addresses the problem of research agendas often being determined by senior researchers, which may not always reflect the priorities of diverse stakeholders. A more collaborative, inclusive, and transparent approach to priority setting helps to ensure that the priorities identified are contextually relevant, and appropriate, and consider the diverse contexts in which CSV manifests across the world. This methodology further ensures that the views of all are treated equally without dominance of any one voice.

How is the research agenda being developed?

We are using an adaptation of the CHNRI (Child Health and Nutrition Research Initiative) method in the co-creation of CSV research agenda. The co-creation methodology has been adapted based on iterative learning and feedback from previous global and regional participatory and inclusive processes that SVRI – with multiple partners – has facilitated to identify knowledge building priorities and research agendas related to various forms of violence against women and violence against children. The CSV priority setting process approach draws on existing evidence on CSV in LMICs to identify research questions under each of the following domains.

  • Domain 1: Understanding CSV
  • Domain 2: CSV interventions and response
  • Domain 3: CSV preventions interventions
  • Domain 4: CSV among vulnerable and marginalized populations
  • Domain 5: CSV measures and methodologies

Stakeholders are invited to co-create the research agenda through a governance structure involving three groups: a stewardship group, advisory group, and a global expert group. Generated research questions are analysed and agreed upon by the stewardship and advisory groups, after which the global expert group is invited to rank the questions using a co-developed 3-item criteria:

  • Fills key gap : some research ideas will be more likely to fill a key gap in knowledge that is required for translation and/or implementation than others.
  • Applicability : the likelihood that the knowledge produced through the proposed research will be applied in policy and practice
  • Effectiveness: some research ideas will be more likely to generate/improve truly effective interventions

To ensure the inclusion of multiple voices in the identification and prioritisation of research questions, we have also undertaken a series of key informant interviews and focus group discussions with children, CSV survivors, LGBTQI people, indigenous people, and people with disabilities.

Mardigian Library Support for Data Management Plans

Data management plan support available from the UM-Dearborn Mardigian Library. Data management planning is often required by funders in the form of a document called a Data Management Plan (DMP) that will describe the handling (collection, storage and archiving) of data collected during your project. A DMP may also need to include plans for the dissemination of your data, (sometimes referred to separately as a Data Sharing Plan). To help faculty navigate data management planning, the UM-Dearborn Mardigian Library offers both a subject guide on Research Data Management as well as a DMP review service.

The UM-Dearborn Mardigian Library’s Research Data Management subject guide covers definitions, online tools for creating a DMP, guidance from ICPSR, example plans and more.  Read the Research Data Management subject guide to learn more about DMPs.

UM-Dearborn librarians are also available to help answer questions and offer support to faculty improving their DMPs as a part of their DMP review service. To contact a librarian for a DMP review, fill in their  DMP review request form .

Reminder: Resources for Using SciENcv

Effective Oct. 23, 2023 NSF requires all biosketch and current & pending support documents for senior personnel to be prepared using SciENcv. The fillable pdf forms are no longer accepted. We recommend that you take the time to register with ScieENcv and begin to create your documents in that system if you expect to be involved in a proposal to NSF in the near future.

U-M Library Services has put together this guidance page to help you get started. You can also request a one-on-one Zoom session with Dearborn Office of Research staff to walk you through this process. Science Experts Network Curriculum Vitae ( SciENcv ) is a researcher profile system for all individuals who apply for, receive or are associated with research investments from federal agencies. SciENcv allows researchers to document their education, employment, research activities, publications, honors, research grants, & other professional contributions to create multiple SciENcv profiles in official biographical sketch formats funding agencies such as the  National Institutes of Health (NIH), the  National Science Foundation (NSF), and the  Institute of Education Sciences (IES). In addition, the SciENcv application can be used to create the official NSF Current and Pending Support document.

Any researcher can  register for SciENcv and create multiple biosketches, for different research projects or different funding agencies. You can find much more information about how to use SciENcv on  their FAQs page . The central Office of Research and Sponsored Programs and U-M Library have resources and previous workshops available on how to create a biosketch in SciENcv specifically focused on NSF and NIH. These resources are available linked below:

  • U-M Library SciENcv Guide (including step-by-steps for creating NSF and NIH biosketches)

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Developing critical infrastructure for the emerging hydrogen fuel economy. Building energy-efficient microelectronics. Reducing the steel industry’s carbon footprint. Manufacturing the next generation of sustainable solar panels.

All are ambitious projects that University at Buffalo researchers and partner organizations will advance thanks to a new $1.25 million grant from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).

UB will use the award, which was championed by U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, to establish a research center that taps into the university’s expertise in materials science, advanced manufacturing, artificial intelligence and other fields.

The center will leverage partnerships with IBM, Linde, National Fuel and other firms – all in an effort to discover new materials that support upstate New York’s transition to an economy focused on clean energy, semiconductor research and manufacturing, artificial intelligence and other industries.

“On behalf of UB, I would like to thank Senator Schumer for his support for federally funded academic research, including this $1.25 million congressionally directed spending request. With Senator Schumer’s support, this new Center for Accelerated Innovation through Materials will establish a materials innovation hub that will help UB lead the state and nation’s transition to a clean energy economy.”

The Center for Accelerated Innovation through Materials (AIM) will be led by Krishna Rajan, ScD, Erich Bloch Chair of the UB Department of Materials Design and Innovation.

“With this funding, UB will establish a materials science research hub that connects industry, educational, workforce and community partners to state-of-the-art equipment and faculty expertise that accelerates the transition of cutting-edge technology into goods and services that benefit the American people,” says Rajan, who is a SUNY Distinguished Professor and SUNY Empire Innovation Professor.

UB will use the grant to purchase equipment – microscopes, spectrometers and more – to study in real-time the behavior of materials when exposed to gases and other environmental conditions. It will also fund the studies of graduate students, and support workforce training programs.

Initially, the center will target several areas of research, including developing infrastructure for hydrogen-based fuels, which are a green energy alternative that has the potential to supplant fossil fuels that power plants, vehicles, buildings and other systems rely upon.

Researchers will work with industry to explore new materials for pipelines to safely and effectively transport hydrogen fuel, which degrades when exposed to stainless steel and other materials commonly used in natural gas pipelines.

Another area of research will be microelectronics. The growing demand for computing power, including supercomputing facilities that support AI systems, is taxing the nation’s energy grid. AIM researchers will explore new materials for chips and other electronic components that more efficiently use electricity.

AIM also will work with the iron and steel industries, which account for 7% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions, according to the Department of Energy. These industries could reduce their emissions by using hydrogen fuel instead of fossil fuels when converting iron ore to iron. AIM will work on new materials and processes for this transition.

The center will also study use AI and high-performance computing – specifically the fields of computational chemistry and materials informatics – to sleuth for eco-friendly materials to be used in solar cells.

A unique aspect of AIM, Rajan says, is that it integrates its experimental infrastructure with materials informatics, AI and high-performance computing to accelerate innovation in discovery and design of materials to establish a clean energy economy.

2023-2024 SPARC Graduate Research Grants awarded to 25 graduate students

The Office of the Vice President for Research is excited to award 25 2023-2024 SPARC Graduate Research Grants to support graduate student researchers across 17 University of South Carolina academic departments. These SPARC recipients, listed below, will use their funding to engage in research, scholarly and creative projects over a 15-month period beginning this May.

Through SPARC, or Support to Promote Advancement of Research and Creativity, graduate students compete for internal funding of up to $5,000 to support their meritorious research, creative and scholarly projects. The SPARC application process includes many of the same steps involved in developing extramural research funding proposals, like planning a budget, documenting current and pending support, and drafting and refining the proposal narrative. By applying for SPARC, students practice these skills and prepare themselves for a future in research.

Please join the Office of the Vice President for Research in congratulating these bright graduate student scholars and thank you for the mentorship and support of our faculty advisors and departments.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), as part of its Science to Achieve Results (STAR) program, aims to promote scientific progress towards the understanding of coastal ecosystem resilience by seeking applications proposing research to 1) characterize, quantify, and define indicators or metrics of resilience for various types of coastal ecosystems, especially those ecosystems that have climate mitigation and adaptation and/or blue (ocean-stored) carbon sequestration potential (Lovelock and Duarte, 2019); and 2) develop methods and approaches to advance economic valuation of resilience benefits provided by coastal ecosystems.

Two major goals in EPA’s FY2022-2026 Strategic Plan are (1) increasing resilience and adaptation to climate change impacts and (2) protecting and restoring waterbodies and watersheds (EPA, 2022a). Coastal waterbodies and the aquatic ecosystems they contain are at the forefront of climate change impacts (EPA, 2021a). However, the cumulative impacts of other stressors such as rising, warmer, and more acidic seas, stronger and more frequent storms, droughts, and potential co-occurring changes to pollutant fluxes on coastal ecosystem resilience are poorly understood.

This funding opportunity solicits research needed to advance our understanding of the properties and processes important to climate resilience in estuarine and coastal marine ecosystems to better inform coastal ecosystem management strategies. Resilient coastal ecosystems and the benefits they provide may persist over time in the face of multiple stressors or disturbances. However, the cumulative impacts of multiple stressors may exceed resilience capacity, alter ecosystem structure and function, or result in loss of coastal ecosystems. Elucidation of the mechanistic basis of resilience in coastal ecosystems and development of quantitative indicators or metrics rooted in the mechanisms of resilience will greatly advance the science of coastal ecosystem management. Effective coastal ecosystem management strategies also require advances in economic valuation approaches to estimate the benefits provided by coastal ecosystems, particularly those benefits related to increasing climate change resilience (e.g., avoided costs from flooding and property damage, avoided costs from disruptions to commercial activities such as tourism or fisheries, or benefits provided when considered together with other public infrastructure).
