Licensure Requirements

New Jersey is a compact state, meaning, if you hold a multi-state license from another state, you can practice nursing in New Jersey. 

If you do not hold a multi-state license, you must apply for a New Jersey nursing license by endorsement . To do this, you must meet the following requirements: 

• Submit a full-face original passport photo of your head and shoulders taken within the last six months.
• Submit a copy of your birth certificate or U.S. passport.
• Submit proof of any name changes.
• Authorize New Jersey’s Board to conduct a criminal background check and/or fingerprinting.
• Submit any applicable criminal history documents.
• Provide written verification of licensure in good standing from the state in which you were licensed. This can be done via Nursys Ⓡ or using the license verification form. Submit a signed copy of your receipt and forward your results directly to the New Jersey Board of Nursing. 

APRNs applying for endorsement in the state of New Jersey must submit the following to the Board of Nursing:

1. Proof of a current New Jersey registered professional nurse license in good standing 2. A completed application form and a nonrefundable application fee of $100.00 payable by money order or check only — after the application process is completed there is also a certificate fee of $80.00/$160.00 depending on the expiration of your Registered Professional Nurse License. 3. Original official transcript(s) as proof of compliance with the Board’s education requirements — these are to be sent directly from the university/college(s) to the Board of Nursing. 4. Proof of passing the highest level national Advanced Practice Nurse Examination in the area of clinical specialty  5. Proof that all advanced nursing practice certification(s)/licensure(s) that you have held in other states are in good standing, expired, or in some other status.  

An Advanced Practice Nurse certified in any other state(s) who wishes to be certified to practice in New Jersey as an APRN must be certified by the New Jersey Board of Nursing. 

If you are planning to accept a travel nursing position in New Jersey as an RN or LPN, you can apply for a temporary license to practice in the state. This license fee is $140.00 plus additional fees if you are an out-of-state resident.

Licensure Fees

Nurses applying for endorsement must pay $200 via check or money order to the New Jersey Board of Nursing. This fee includes a:

• $120.00 license fee 
• $75.00 nonrefundable application fee; and

10 Steps To Become a Travel Nurse

Why Hospitals Need Travel Nurses

A travel nurse is a nurse who work temporary jobs or assignments. Most assignments are typically 13 weeks long but can vary. You might be asking why a hospital or facility needs travel nurses? There are many reasons why a facility will hire a travel nurse. Here are a few reasons:

• Specialty Demand. For example, the  Centers for Disease Control and Prevention  states that August is typically the month with the most babies born. This would result in an increase in demand for L&D nurses during the months leading up to August.
• Seasonal Demand. States like Arizona and Florida see a seasonal increase in population from snowbirds migrating. This increase in population means hospitals will look to hire travel nurses to prepare for demand.
• Looking For Skilled Nurses. It can be difficult for some facilities to keep skilled nurses based on the city’s location and pay. To keep skilled nursing specialties on site, hospitals will hire travel nurses.

Due to these reasons and more, hospitals turn to qualified travel nurses for specific periods of time to support the demand.

How To Become A Travel Nurse

There are plenty of benefits of being a travel nurse. From the ability to choose where you work, to being well compensated, to having things like travel and license reimbursed, to having housing paid for. You might be thinking to yourself that this sounds great and you are ready to become a travel nurse. Now what? There are specific requirements that vary by location but you may be surprised at how easy it is to start working in this exciting field.

Step 1) Complete Required Education.  The good news is if you are a registered nurse, you already have this step completed. After all, to become a registered nurse you must complete the proper education and at the very least should hold a Bachelor’s degree.

Step 2) Pass The NCLEX Exam.  To become a registered nurse and which case a travel nurse, you must pass the  National Council Licensure Examination  (NCLEX). The NCLEX is developed and administered by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing, Inc (NCSBN).

Step 3) Secure The Proper License.  After passing the NCLEX exam, the next step is to determine which state you want to work as a travel nurse. Some states offer compact license so it’s important to see if the state you want to work requires its own license or not. Step 4) Gain Experience.  Most hospitals require a minimum of one-year clinical nursing experience before accepting them as a travel nurse. For the more competitive positions/locations, some hospitals will require two or more years of experience.

Step 5) Select A Travel Nurse Agency.  Now that you have your education, exams, and experience completed, the next step is to identify the agency you want to work with. There are a lot of travel nurse agencies out there so it is important to research companies first. Ask any travel nurse friends you have or search online ratings & reviews to find the right agency for you. There are some similarities among travel nurse agencies but there are also several differences. Take some time on this step.

Step 6) Identify Your Tax Home.  Travel nursing pay packages almost always include some tax-free compensation. To qualify for this tax-free compensation, you must maintain a tax-home. This is certainly something your travel nurse agency or recruiter can discuss with you to make sure you are properly covered. However, this is a very important step so make sure you are clear before beginning work. Here is some additional information that outlines  tax tips for travel nurses .

Step 7) Decide What You Want Out Of Travel Nursing.  As a travel nurse, you have so many options. That is why it is important to determine what you want out of travel nursing. Are you motivated by making a lot of money or growing your career? Do you want to work in a specific geographical location or in a certain setting? Be sure to inform your recruiter of your goals so that he or she can find you assignments that fit your needs.

Step 8) Select Your Desired Assignments.  After you have identified which state you want to work, you have expressed to your recruiter what you want out of travel nursing, it’s time to select the job you want. Once you get to this step, this is where your recruiter will be able to help you find jobs that fit your needs. The good news is the demand for nurses is very high so you should have no problem finding jobs to choose from. It’s important at this step you prioritize your desired assignments with your recruiter. It’s good to have a favorite, but be sure to allow for a few backup assignments just in case your top choice doesn’t work.

Step 9) Practice Your Interviews.  Once you have identified your job and been submitted by your recruiter, the next critical step is the interview. Almost every interview you have for a travel nurse assignment will be done over the phone. Be sure to practice your phone interview and ask your recruiter for any tips.

Step 10) Maintain your CEUs.  Some states require a certain number of Continuing Education Units (CEUs) to renew your license. If you have a compact license, you only need to maintain your home license requirements. There is a reason why New Jersey has been dubbed “America in miniature,” because any atmosphere you prefer, you can find. The state boasts 130 miles of coastline along its eastern border. The interior of the state contains densely wooded forests in the south and fertile farmland in the north. In the northwest corner, the rolling hills and mountains make up the landscape. The state is home to over 500 diners , more than any other in the nation, ensuring you can find a hot meal 24 hours a day. Dig into a diner specialty, disco fries — a dish of french fries covered in brown gravy and mozzarella cheese. A diner is also a great place to find the Jersey original pork roll, which is similar to sausage and served sliced and pan fried. Also deserving a mention are the many ethnic cuisines to be found in the state, thanks to a large immigrant population . Authentic Indian, Chinese, Cuban, Middle Eastern, Italian, Polish, and Filipino restaurants (to name a few) are readily available.

Many travel nurses opt for temporary assignments because of the autonomy and opportunities − not just the big boost in pay

Travel nurses take short-term contracts that can require long commutes or temporarily living away from home. Time and again, they have to get used to new co-workers, new protocols and new workplaces.

So why would staff nurses quit their stable jobs to become travel nurses?

Well, for one, they get bigger paychecks . But U.S. nurses have other rationales besides making more money, according to a study I conducted .

To do this research, I interviewed 27 registered nurses based in different places.

Many of the people I interviewed disclosed that they left permanent positions to combat burnout. Although they welcomed the bump in pay, travel nursing also gave them the autonomy to decide when and where to work. That autonomy allowed them to pursue personal and professional interests that were meaningful to them, and it made some of the other hassles, such as long commutes, worth it.

On top of earning more money, travel nursing “gives you an opportunity to explore different areas,” said a nurse I’ll call Cynthia, because research rules require anonymity. “When you actually live there for three months, it gives you a chance to really immerse yourself in the area and really get to know not just the touristy stuff, but really hang out with the locals and really be exposed to that area.”

Other study participants said they enjoyed the novelty and educational opportunities.

“You don’t get bored or stuck in a routine,” Michelle said. “You’re always trying to learn new policies at the new hospital that you’re in, learning about the new doctors, nursing staff, new ways of doing things, where things are located. That helps keep me from feeling burned out so quickly.”

Said Patricia: “I want to see how other operating rooms across the country do things and how they do things differently. I do learn a lot of things going from place to place.”

Why it matters

A growing number of U.S. nurses were obtaining temporary assignments before the COVID-19 pandemic began.

But travel nursing became much more widespread in 2020, when hospitals were scrambling to keep their staffing levels high enough as millions of Americans were becoming infected with the coronavirus, straining capacity in many communities.

While compensation varies widely, the median pay of registered nurses in 2022 was US$81,220 , about 35% less than the $110,000 that registered nurses who traveled earned .

At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, travel nurses could earn an even bigger premium . Many were paid twice as much as staff nurses.

Once the number of Americans with severe symptoms fell, that premium declined too . But there are still over 1.7 million travel nurses in the U.S. Hiring them is one of the main ways that hospitals cope with a long-term shortage of nurses .

But nurses with permanent jobs can get aggravated by this arrangement when they learn how much more travel nurses earn for doing the same work, as I found through another research project .

What other research is being done

Research supports a widely reported trend: More Americans have temporary jobs and freelance employment than in the past.

While travel nurses can help hospitals, nursing homes and doctors’ offices meet staffing needs, there are signs that patients don’t always fare as well with their care.

And a Canadian study found that when hospitals let staff nurses work part time and offer other alternative arrangements, their retention rates may rise .
