#1 Set Your Online Content Goal

The first step you need to consider is your  online goal . Ask yourself the following questions:

  • What is my short, medium and long-term goal for producing content online?
  • How do I wish to brand myself online? What is my  unique niche —the space that I wish to be known for?
  • What is my measure of success? It is based on securing fresh job opportunities? Or getting invitations to speak? Or just raising my personal profile?
  • What are the online metrics that I will use to determine the success of my digital writing efforts? For individuals, this could be awareness (views, users, reach and impressions), engagement (likes, comments, shares and clicks) to conversion (private messages, meet-up sessions, telephone calls) and loyalty (increase in no of friends and fans).

#2 Identify Your Online Audience

Once you’ve determined why you are creating content online, your next step is to determine who you’re writing, filming, photographing and sharing content for.

In defining who your online audiences are, it is useful to ask yourself the following questions:

  • Who are the people that you hope to reach? What are their demographics like, ie age, gender, location, family size, housing, income, and occupation
  • What are their interests, attitudes, lifestyles and behaviours like? Are there influencers and thought leaders whom they follow? What about the movies that they watch, brands that they use, and magazines (or webazines) that they read?
  • How can your content be relevant (and more importantly useful) to them?
  • Why  would they like, trust, believe in, and follow you?

#3 Focus on the Right Content Niche

When considering who you should focus your energies on, consider the principle of “niches for riches.” In other words, try to be as  narrow in your content focus as possible.

Here it is useful to do some preliminary research to assess what the competition is like, and how you can differentiate yourself from the others.

For example, merely positioning yourself as an “wellness specialist” may be far too broad a category. It would be better if you can narrow it down, for example by focusing on a specific audience segment or a specific section in wellness. Hence, you could be a “wellness specialist in middle-age men” or “health advisor for teenaged girls.”

Beyond finding a less crowded and more specialised area to focus on, consider too if this is something that is aligned to your personal branding . Here, I’d like to draw your attention to the philosophy of ikigai and the four dimensions that it focuses on:

  • What You Love : This the thing that you delight in doing each and every day.
  • What The World Needs : This would be the mission that you can fulfill.
  • What You Can Be Paid For : This would be what your potential clients/ customers would pay money for.
  • What You Are Good At : This would be where your Strengths comes in.

#4 Choose the Right Digital Channels

In choosing the right social media and digital channels to publish your content in, you should ask yourself the following questions:

  • Where are my target audiences likely to be hanging out in?
  • What content types would work best for them? Will they be interested in reading long-form articles? Watching short bite-sized videos? Perusing pretty pictures?
  • How will their purpose on these channels match my own content goals?

There are many different channels to choose from here. Let me dive into some of the unique characteristics for each:

  • A Website/blog  will help you to stand out significantly from your peers. Focused on your specific topic and niche, you can take advantage of both Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and social sharing. While you do need some basic technical knowledge to start one, the availability of DIY website builders like Wix, Weebly and other platforms make them easy to do.
  • YouTube has morphed from being a social network to becoming an online video repository of sorts. It is also the second largest search engine on the Web, and hence the use of well-written descriptions and keywords become key. You can also benefit from having subscribers to your video channel, and position yourself as an expert.
  • Facebook  is still the largest and most important social network out there. Due to its  recent changes to the News Feed , conversation triggering content may work better here. Avoid click baiting or engagement baiting tactics. Videos are still cool here, and if you can, try to go  Live .
  • Instagram  has grow tremendously in the last few years, and is now an important visual social channel to reach PMETs, young adults and youths. A key development here is the introduction of  Stories , which are real-time video and photo updates. Content which works well here are photos and short videos.
  • LinkedIn  is the most important social network for professionals, especially those in the management and technology fields. It is also well regarded by CEOs and senior managers. Text seems to be better here, especially those with a business storytelling angle.
  • Twitter  is still around. It recently allowed more characters (up to 280 characters) and its “What’s Trending” feature is useful to ascertain what’s hot. Like Instagram, #hashtags are important here. Tweets with images and short videos work well here.
  • SnapChat  was the original “Stories” app until it got supplanted by Instagram (and now Facebook too) with their own versions.
  • TikTok   is great if you are hoping to hit the teenagers and youths. Each video is now a whopping 60 seconds in length. Whimsical and musical content works better here, especially videos with a lot of animated movements (and a fancy soundtrack).
  • Pinterest  is also known as “social candy” in view of its preference for beautiful designs and images. Over 2/3rds of Pinterest regulars are females. Increasingly, Pinterest has also become an important e-commerce channel.

#5 Best Practices in Writing an Article/ Blog

Now that you’ve done the hard work of choosing which channels to focus on, I will now cover digital writing tips for the most popular channels.

The first channel we will focus on are websites or blogs, and how you can craft articles for them. Here are some of the best practices to consider:

How to Get Content Ideas

Here are some of my favourite ways to be inspired with the right article ideas:

  • Surf Quora and type your topic of interest in there. What are the questions which come out? Write an article to answer that!
  • Use a search keyword tool like Ubersuggest , Keyword Tool , or SEMRush to come up with possible topics of interest. Choose less competitive keywords that have a decent search volume per month.
  • Check out Google Trends to see what the most popular trending topics are. Write an article based on that topic.
  • Talk to your friends, colleagues, or acquaintances about your topic of interest. Tell them that you’re writing an article and ask them for ideas!

Formatting of Article

Here it is useful to follow the inverted pyramid format, where you place the most important information upfront, followed by the next most important information and so on.

Beyond this, you should also consider these elements of formatting:

  • Headlines : These are the most important aspects of any article. Write it last, and prepare to spend up to 80 percent of your time doing so.
  • Lead ins/ Ledes : This is the first paragraph in your copy. Make it punchy. Make it a question that your reader wants answered. Or quote a statistic or amazing fact.
  • Subheadings:  Include subheadings for your article so that it is easier to parse—especially on a mobile phone (where most people would read from).
  • Conversational Tone : Write like how you speak. However, don’t babble!
  • Call To Action : Have an ending to your article that brings them to the next stage of their journey with you. Where do you want them to go?

Length of Article

This has been a topic of much debate.

While shorter and more succinct pieces may work well for an easily distracted audience, longer in-depth pieces (like this one here) may rank better on search.

I try to aim for at least 1,000 to 1,500 words per article, and I find that it has worked well for me. To make it less laborious to read, use bullet points, subheadings, images and videos to break the wall-of-text.

You may be active on Facebook sharing photos of your food, your kids, or your cat. However, few users are aware of how they can use this mother of all social networks to build their professional brand.

There are a couple of tips here that you can consider:

  • Write short and long : Vary the length of your posts, depending on how much information you wish to share. However, don’t babble (haven’t you seen that before?).
  • Try videos : Record yourself sharing a useful piece of advice. Keep it short—1 to 2 minutes work best—and remember to write a script first.
  • Choose photos with people : Of all the image types that work on Facebook, people images tend to perform the best. Use these as a point of reference when you craft a piece of content.
  • Ride on trends : Facebook posts which work well tend to be those that are plugged into the news.
  • Mix business with pleasure : Write like you would to a friend, but include useful tips and insights relevant to your trade.
  • Consistency with a twist : Positioning yourself as an expert and “go-to” person in a specific domain necessitates a consistent content strategy. However, you should also not be afraid to surprise your followers by offering an insight or a witty quip.

#7 Crafting Impactful Instagram Content

Now, unlike Facebook and blogs, the copy in Instagram usually plays second fiddle to your photo or video. Thus, if you’re not able to shoot an interesting photo or video or design an intriguing graphic, you probably should not expect Instagram to work wonders for you.

Having said that, there are some creative ways to use Instagram to build your online brand.

Thematic Day-in-the-Life Posts

Use Instagram to show what you do either at work, in school or during social settings. However, keep it thematic and relevant to what you are trying to position yourself as.

Thus, if you want to be known as a small-business accounting specialist, you could snap a photo of yourself hard at work at your client’s place (with their permission of course).

Share Helpful Snippets on Stories

Use the Stories feature on Instagram to provide short bite-sized tips. You can make use of the text overlay feature to craft one or two liners as takeaways, and then talk to the camera as you record.

Keep Copy Short and Use as a Teaser

Instagram isn’t a place to write a long article—that is what a blog is for. Hence, you should craft your post like a teaser to attract them to your website or your YouTube channel to consume the longer and more comprehensive piece.

Use #Hashtags Sparingly

Hashtags (and location tags) are commonly used to find posts on Instagram. Choose a consistent hashtag to represent your brand (eg #coolerinsights in our case), as well as those that are relevant to your area of specialisation.

Use this tool to generate the right hashtags for your use, or follow what influencers use .

#8 How to Tweet Terrifically

With 280 characters per tweet, plus the ability to attach videos and images, Twitter has evolved quite significantly.

As an individual seeking to build your online brand, you can use Twitter to follow influencers and see what’s trending using tools like trends24 .

Invite your offline friends to follow you on Twitter. Seek to build a personal brand focused on tweeting content revolving around your subject matter of expertise.

Rather than just share what you’ve come across, add a couple of words to provide your own perspective. Like Instagram, hashtags also work on Twitter—keep to just one or two #hashtags here.

Oh yes, don’t forget to retweet and favourite/like the content of Twitter influencers. This helps you to get noticed by them and builds goodwill.

#9 How to Write for LinkedIn

LinkedIn is the secret weapon that many people have access to, but few use well. While it stills works well as a place for job seekers and talent finders to converge, the professional social network is also invaluable for those seeking to build their personal brand.

Polish Your LinkedIn Profile

As I’ve previously written , you should first focus on your LinkedIn profile. Update your photo to a professional looking one, and craft your USPs in your LinkedIn headline.

Review your Summary (ie the “About” section) and find ways to write about your career and business achievements in an easy to digest yet upbeat manner. Depending on your preference, you can write about yourself in the 3rd person (“Armed with 25 years of senior management experience, Walter is a ……”) or you can choose the active and direct method.

Content ideas that work (and don’t)

You probably know that LinkedIn isn’t the place to share your baby photos, a comical skit, or the latest viral video sensation. However, do you know that LinkedIn works exceptionally well for stories?

The type of stories that you can craft here include:

  • Sharing an episode in your professional life where you overcame a difficulty
  • Narrating how your customer have benefited from what you’ve provided them with
  • Relating words of wisdom from a former boss or mentor
  • Using your own personal experience—both successes and more importantly failures—to share useful lessons at work or in life

Beyond this, consider providing useful tips that a mostly PMET crowd could benefit from. They may include leadership and management insights, productivity tips, or hacks that you’ve used.

#10 Develop a Personal Content Schedule

Finally, you need to put everything together into a calendar or a content schedule . This is important—whatever gets into your calendar gets done after all.

There are a couple of things you can do to regulate and systematize your online content work:

  • Book Your Calendar : Fix your time to create content and make it a regular part of your day, week and month
  • Organise along Themes : Develop a couple of core themes that you can craft your content on. If you wish, you can write them down somewhere as a reminder and a nudge.
  • Consume Good Content : Read, watch videos, or listen to quality content providers who are the masters in your field.
  • Participate and Engage : The Law of Reciprocity is one that works exceedingly well online. Join Facebook Groups or LinkedIn Groups, and actively comment on the posts of others. You may also wish to subscribe to email newsletters to get an idea of what influencers in your space are sharing.
  • Make it a Ritual : Turn online content production into a lifestyle habit. This does not mean that you need to blog or post everyday. However, it does mean that you dedicate time and energy to crafting online content on a regular basis.

With its advent, social media morphed into a pay-to-play model. For instance, Facebook natural reach declined quickly and posts are rarely seen organically. HOWEVER…

This doesn’t mean that you can’t reach your followers organically.  If reaching followers more effectively and efficiently is your concern, then advertising is the best way forward. This way you can spend more time writing and less time pampering your social media accounts for organic traffic. The truth is that gaining a following on social media organically takes a lot of time. Time that you’d rather spend writing.

On the flip side, putting money out there for ads can be scary. Especially when you’re not making a lot of money yet, or you’re not sure what you’re doing. So, if you decide you want to build your social presence in an efficient manner, then be sure to take a course to help you .

Social media is a wonderful tool for both professional and personal reasons. It helps you to keep in touch with friends, family, fans, and potential clients. There are many different platforms out there, each with their own unique features. These include, but are not limited to:

So, which one is best for you? It all depends on exactly what you are looking for and how much time and energy you are willing to dedicate to social media. Let’s take a look at some of the platforms available for authors and writers to utilize.

Facebook Page or Group for Writers

Facebook is one of the largest social media platforms. It not only has the largest user base, but is also one of the most widely used for all demographics. No matter what you write, your market definitely exists on Facebook .

With Facebook, authors have three ways to market their books and writings:

  • Using your Personal Facebook Profile
  • Creating an Author Page
  • Joining or Creating an Author Group

Your personal Facebook profile is exactly what it says. Some have had success with this. Personally though, I prefer not to mix business with my personal life.

An author page is your official writer page where you can post about your works or anything that is happening in your genre or subject matter. This tends to be the preferred choice for most writers. With a Facebook Page, you have more control of the social media marketing aspect of your writing. You can also dictate whether your followers have the ability to post on your page or not.

A Facebook Group could be a good fit for you as well, especially for beginning or newer authors. Creating a group of like-minded fans of your genre can keep you relevant and always attracting new readers. It allows you to interact with your groups followers. However, it will require a lot more time because with good groups, you need to mediate and keep the group clean and on target.

Choosing between a Facebook Page or Facebook Group can be a difficult decision at times. Here is an article that breaks down just what the difference is between the two, pros/cons of each, and which should you pursue.

  • Paulo Coelho : Paulo Coelho has mastered the art of Facebook. He provides daily content for his fans including quotes, book reviews, and even entries from his own personal blog.
  • Neil Gaiman : Neil’s page is well-formed and balanced. He provides his followers with insights into his daily life and promotes content that he has taken interest in. There are, however, snippets of promotion throughout. He focuses more on marketing himself than his writings.
  • David Allen : David Allen is effective at follower outreach through quotes and questions. Often times, he poses questions to his audience in order to generate response.
  • John Green : John’s approach to Facebook is very interesting. He provides insight into his life and works through video. He frequently uploads his personal YouTube videos as a way to actively engage with his following.
  • LitRPG Books :  This is a genre-specific Facebook group where lovers of LitRPG gather to talk about the genre, the latest books and more. You can find other authors in the LitRPG world where you can network as well as potential fans of that type of book.
  • Kindlepreneur : Here at Kindlepreneur, we like to take a meat and potatoes approach. We provide you with informative and entertaining content on how you can market yourself and your work.

Twitter for Writers

As of right now, there are very few platforms anywhere that are more watched than Twitter. From celebrity gossip to presidential politics, Twitter has become a place where you can experience it all. It is a huge arena to exchange ideas and get your author brand out there. From a business standpoint , Twitter can be a powerful tool if utilized correctly.

Twitter provides a fast-paced platform for you to pitch your writing. By limiting the amount of characters that can be used, Twitter encourages the elevator pitch format. Get your point out there. Bring in followers. That simple.

It’s also a great place to build a following. You see, many Twitter users act on a follow-for-follow policy. So, all you need to do is find and follow those who may be interested in your work or those who you are interested in. Normally when you follow an individual, that person will follow you back. You help each other build fan bases. An I-scratch-your-back-you-scratch-mine kinda thing. Building a following has never been easier.

  • JK Rowling : Rowling does it best when she’s roasting trolls both at Hogwarts and online.
  • Stephen King : Stephen’s tweets normally have been promotional and friendly in nature. He does like to make political statements here as well. Many of which have garnered him a much larger following.
  • Jodi Picoult : She spends her Twitter time taking down nasty Internet trolls and defending those who are discriminated against in society.
  • Rick Riordan : When not promoting his work, Rick uses Twitter for other means. By reading through Rick’s Twitter feed, you will find that he is a huge fan of self-deprecating humor and the latest in science and tech.
  • Dave Chesson : I spend my Twitter time promoting not only my own posts, but those who are really making great contributions to our line of work.

Instagram for Writers

Besides an author bio , what’s one of the best ways to give your readers a glimpse into your life?

Instagram is very different than the previous two social media platforms. Its biggest focus is on the picture or photo posted. Now, you may be wondering…

“Who the heck just looks at the pictures?”

The younger generation for starters. An insanely large number of them. Writers looking to attract the youngsters' attention does not need to look any further than Instagram.

There are many authors on Instagram posting exciting and engaging social media content via pictures and stories. Creative pictures of their work or simple quotes are just a part of them. Many Instagram authors take wonderful photos of their inspirations in order to show their followers a peek into how the writing gets done. For instance, if you wrote a poem about a gnarled old tree, it would be cool to see a picture of that 150-year-old live oak that you drew inspiration from.

Don’t let Instagram’s artistic nature fool you. This may be one of the best social media platforms to promote on or get book reviews from Bookstagrammers (#bookstagram). Instagram is perfect for setting up giveaways and promotions! There is a caveat to this, however. Just like Amazon and Amazon Affiliates, there are some simple rules that must be followed. Make sure you comply so you can run a successful promo.

  • Rupi Kaur : If you are a lover of poetry, you should definitely follow Rupi. She posts visually artistic poetry along with illustrations from her collections.
  • R.M. Drake : Drake is another Instagram poet. Here he posted excerpts from his work. Great for poetry on the go.
  • Susan Dennard : Susan utilizes the Instagram Stories feature. She gives you some super intense and super helpful tips on how you can become a better writer.
  • John Krakauer : This investigative adventure writer’s handle is @krakauernotwriting… and that’s exactly what he’s not doing on his IG feed. But check out all the awesome adventures his life takes him for a behind-the-scenes look.
  • Tahereh Mafi : She spends her life traveling the world and living life to its fullest! When she isn’t writing, of course…
  • 10 Instagram Tips for Writers : Another Jane Friedman article. This time she breaks down 10 key points for utilizing Instagram.
  • How to Use Instagram As An Author Plus 10 Ways to Grow Your Account Organically : Learn what Instagram is and how it has made a difference for authors from Joanna Penn. She also offers guidelines on posting times. You don’t want to miss this one.

TikTok for Writers

Social media platforms tend to come and go, but one that seems to be here to stay (at least for a while) is TikTok .

TikTok is the prime example of a social network that has evolved over time to be something genuinely unique.

It is primarily a video platform for short-form videos, but it allows for interaction between videos in a way that you can't find anywhere else. You can post reactions to certain videos and even do a “duet” with those videos, allowing for further interaction.

TikTok is primarily geared for a younger audience, but more and more people in older demographics are beginning to flock to the platform, and it's starting to become a global phenomenon.

And right now TikTok is still young, which means that discoverability is great. Put in the work, and you have a good chance of finding readers there. And that translates directly to book sales.

Where to start? I would look at other accounts that are posting under the hashtag #booktok and seeing what they do, then dive in and start creating your own content!

  • Victoria Aveyard : Author of the Red Queen series, Aveyard is often on TikTok, answering questions about the publishing industry that you've always wanted to ask. Plus her content is great!
  • Colleen Hoover : Colleen is one of those authors who found a large part of her success through TikTok, with her books Verity and It Ends with Us catipuling to the bestseller lists. She's always answering questions and showing us a peak into her life.
  • Aiden Thomas : Aiden is another author who is active on TikTok, casually taking subscribers to different corners of his life, showing off pets, hosting unboxings, etc.
  • Sara Raasch : A worldbuilder after my own heart, Sara has done an amazing job of getting her subscribers involved not only in different parts of her life, but actually participating in her writing process. Amazing!
  • How to Use TikTok as a Writer : A complete guide from The Writing Cooperative
  • TikTok for Authors : As part of Mark Dawson's Ads for Authors course, it now includes an entire course on TikTok.
  • How Writers on TikTok Boost Their Careers : A rundown of advice from different authors.

Goodreads for Authors

Goodreads is an author platform designed specifically for writers. It exists for the sole purpose of connecting authors and their readers. Pretty neat, huh?

One of the best features of Goodreads is how you actually register for the site. Instead of business and personal pages like Facebook, you have reader and author options available. Each option has its own special abilities.

Most people on Goodreads actually join as readers not authors. When registering as a reader, you list all the books you have read then rank and review them using a 5-star system. When that’s done, you are able to then share that list with the public and your friends. This system can help deliver direct exposure for new and budding authors.

Word to the Wise: When updating the reviews on your Goodreads page, be sure to keep your Goodreads reviews and your Amazon reviews separate! Even though Amazon owns Goodreads, that does not mean their respective review mechanics are compatible. Crossing streams could cause for a nasty letter from Amazon or getting banned altogether. It is permissible to ask your readers to review your book on both Goodreads and Amazon individually to avoid any possible confusion. Here's a video about the right way to create your Goodreads Author account to run into fewer review issues on Amazon.

When signing up for the Goodreads Author Program, you are able to take full advantage of some neat features unavailable to readers. For example, you can utilize Goodreads advertising tools. At $0.15 per click, you can control targeted adverts to your readership or another author's. Ruthless. Goodreads also has marketing tools to help you set up book giveaways and other sweet promos.

Your Goodreads ranking can also help you determine how well your book will do on Amazon! In a combined study (Northwestern University, Microsoft Research India, and the Indian Institute for Technology Karagphur), Goodreads rankings and reviews have a direct correlation on whether your book can become an Amazon Best Seller. For all you science and math nerds out there (myself definitely included), check it out here !

  • James Patterson : Patterson has a well put together page. I like that he has done a few book reviews for lesser-known Goodreads authors and answers community questions.
  • Dan Brown : Dan’s Goodreads page is another great one. He makes use of the polling feature to engage his readers and has answered many fan questions.
  • Nicholas Sparks : For those of you in the Romance genre, Sparks is a must-follow. Get the scoop on all his works and his recent updates.
  • John Grisham : As the King of Legal Thrillers, John has a very organized Goodreads page.
  • Khaled Hosseini : Hosseini’s answered questions and blog posts are the highlight of this page. Check out his life experiences and how they have affected his writing.

Pinterest for Writers

The most business-minded of the social media platforms is Pinterest. It is a buyer and seller’s dream. This is true for a slew of reasons. Perhaps though, the biggest reason for this is the way traffic comes in. Take a look at your Twitter and Facebook accounts. Ever notice when you get the most traffic?

When you share something exciting and engaging is when the magic happens. Shorts bursts that build up into one large collective.

Pinterest, on the other hand, is different. After posting (or creating pins as per the platform), pins tend to bring in steady traffic. Now, there may not be the large initial boom the other platforms may have. But that’s ok. Remember slow and steady wins the race? As far as traffic goes, Pinterest has the potential to dwarf the numbers put up by Facebook or Twitter.

Pinterest is also a great “un-social” social media platform. Unlike Facebook or Twitter, you don’t need to actively pursue social engagement. People don’t really care if you reply or talk to them on Pinterest. Just set it and forget it. You can also post many pins at once and its algorithm will space them out as not to flood a reader’s board.

Remember when I said that Pinterest is a buyer and seller’s platform? It’s true. Pinterest now has Product Pins that will redirect readers or those who click your pin directly to the checkout page on your retail site.

  • Jody Hedlund : She has created an individual Pinterest board for all of her books. This can help you see how Jody envisioned her stories so you can see where she draws inspiration from.
  • Katie Ganshert : Looking for great Christian Fiction? Check out Katie’s Pinterest. She has created a board full of short stories she wrote. All of these are free of charge.
  • Sylvia Day : Silvia dedicates her Pinterest to her fans! She has compiled a trove of photos sent in by fans of them with her books.
  • Beth Revis : Beth has created a board all about fan art her readers have sent in. Want to get featured? Just follow her instructions given.

My personal feeling on this is that an author should really only choose one platform and drive it hard.  I know everyone tries to be everywhere, but let’s face it…we don’t have time for that. We’ve got to write a book, publish, and market.  Can we seriously do a great job managing multiple accounts in multiple platforms?

Realistically…no. As a matter of fact, this is the number one reason many writers fail to conquer social media.

Take Kindlepreneur for example. I spend most of my social media resources on Facebook. Doing so has allowed me to create a wonderful avenue in which I can directly communicate with my followers and clients. Not only that, I am now receiving a greater outreach than if I were to try and do too many things at once. Take a lesson from history. Fighting a war on two fronts produces a much lower chance of success.

This is why I think your time is better spent doing only one. And doing that one well. You’ll get much more out of it that way.

I bet you’re thinking, “Dave, this is all fine and dandy, but… ain’t nobody got time for dat! Can’t I just pay somebody to do this for me?”

Sure you can. But do you really know what you’re paying for? Or how do these paid advertisements work? Smart authors know the benefits of doing their homework. And thankfully, I know just the spot to get fully acquainted with paid advertisement.

I’m personally not a fan, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t work. I’ve found that, unless you have a BIG following, content made for one platform, doesn’t usually translate well on other platforms.

Social Media for Writers: The Complete Guide

Social media has become part of our daily lives: we scroll through Twitter for the latest hot takes, check Instagram for our friends’ Stories, click over to Facebook for more updates, rinse and repeat. Naturally, it’s one of the places to be if you’re an author who wants to establish your brand, promote your work, and connect with readers and fellow creatives! 

In this all-inclusive guide to social media for writers, we’ll cover everything you need to know: how to choose which platform(s) to prioritize, build your following, and ultimately use social media to market your book . But for now, let’s start with the question of which platform , then go on to provide detailed tips and case studies from authors who have used each of them successfully.

Which platform(s) should you choose?

As Ricardo Fayet notes in his 2021 guide How to Market a Book: Overperform in a Crowded Market , a key tenet of book marketing is not trying to do everything. Instead, focus on just one or two effective marketing channels. This is especially relevant to social media, which offers so many platforms for different audiences.

So how do you pick the best social platforms for you as a writer? First and foremost, consider your target audience . Where are they most likely to “hang out” on the Internet?

👍🏽 Facebook remains the most popular social network in the world, with nearly 200 million active users in the US. Its core user base is young, perhaps surprisingly so (65% under 35), and skews male (57%). Data also suggests that about half of Facebook users belong to a Facebook Group, which is good for authors who wish to market this way — and as we discuss below, it’s also one of the best platforms for author ads.

🤳 Instagram has 120 million active users in the US, 70% of whom are under 35, with an even gender split. Perhaps most notably for those looking to build an enthusiastic following, Instagram engagement is through the roof — 1% across all industry brands (which might seem low, until you compare it to Facebook’s 0.25% and Twitter’s 0.08%).

🖼 Pinterest , the other big image-sharing platform, has about 100 million users in the US. A whopping 30.4% of these users are women aged 25-34 — for context, this group makes up about 17% of Instagram users and 13% of Facebook users. If that’s your target audience, do keep Pinterest in mind.

🐦 Twitter has fewer active users than the other major platforms here — 68 million in the US, about 62% male — as it’s primarily meant for sharing news and ideas, rather than as a purely social app. But it boasts a dedicated user base and is very popular among writers, who tend to prefer platforms that focus on the written word.

Other factors to consider

All that said, numbers aren’t everything. You should also think about which platform(s) would best serve your author “brand”, as well as how you like to connect with people online.

To get a sense of the former, look at writers and authors similar to you. Which platforms do they belong to, what kind of content do they post, and what is their engagement like? Be sure to follow them if you haven’t already! Not only can they inspire your content, but interacting with them may help you increase your own follower count.

As for the second, the platforms you currently belong to are a good clue. Do you like sharing photos and fun graphics on Instagram?  Do you enjoy spirited discourse on Twitter ? See yourself getting involved in Facebook Groups to gain readers? Though personal preference isn’t as important as access to your target audience, it could be the deciding point if you’re stuck.

And so long as you don’t focus all your efforts on a platform that’s totally incongruous to your work — for example, spending ten hours a day on Pinterest when you’re written a dense history book for retired men — there are always ways to optimize a platform for your purposes.

Facebook for authors

Social Media for Writers | Facebook

By far the biggest social network in the game, Facebook is an excellent choice for writers who want all the spacious content of their own website without having to maintain it independently — or who already have plenty of friends on Facebook who they can channel into this new effort.

You can certainly promote yourself and your work from your personal Facebook account, but Facebook makes it easy to create a specialized Author Page or Facebook Group for your fans. To do this, click the + symbol in the upper-right corner of Facebook and select which one you want:

  • An Author Page is what most writers have. This allows you to write posts, add photos and videos, and create a sidebar that stays with users as they scroll — basically, the Facebook equivalent of an Amazon Author Page . Fans can “like” and follow your page for updates, comment on posts, and even message you, but they can’t post content on the page itself.
  • If you’d like to foster more of a community spirit, consider creating a Facebook Group . With a Group, your followers can post their own content, which allows them to forge stronger connections with one another. The downside is that you’ll have to moderate everything that’s posted, which can be difficult to manage even with a small following!

In short: we’d recommend creating an Author Page, but feel free to try a Group if your followers are engaged enough to keep it active (and you have time to moderate it). Whichever way you go, here are some more tips to help you get the most out of Facebook as a writer.

Tips for authors on Facebook

🤔 Post thoughtful, long-ish content. Mixing blog-like posts with short status updates seems to work well for most Facebook users. Talk about your day, your new projects, and so on — keep it personal, interesting, and not too long (200-300 words is plenty).

Not quite sure how to approach writing for social media? Perhaps these tips on how to write better can give you a head start. 

🔗 Take advantage of link sharing on Facebook. Unlike Instagram, Facebook lets you post clickable external links to your heart’s content. Make sure to keep the most important links (like the link to buy your book, cough cough!) in that scrolling sidebar.

Tips for authors on Twitter

✍🏾 Participate in writing and author trends. Check out the #amwriting hashtag to see what others are working on, take part in fun author trends ( like this one for describing your book), and make sure you’re following the #pitchwars action each summer — especially if you’re hoping to nab a literary agent at some point!

🤹‍♀️ But don’t be afraid to juggle other topics. While it can be good to specialize on some platforms, Twitter is not one of them; it’s designed for you to dip in and out of different spheres. Don’t post about things that are totally disparate or inappropriate, but feel free to talk about the news, pop culture, and even politics as you see fit.

👀 Do cover reveals and sneak peeks. Twitter is great for spreading buzz about new releases, since others can not only like and comment, but also retweet your big announcements. And again, unlike on Instagram, you can include direct links to pre-order or purchase your book.

🤝 Engage, engage, engage. It’s essential on any platform, but especially on Twitter, where dialogue is everything. Reply to other people’s Tweets, compliment their work, and challenge things you don’t agree with (while remaining as civil as possible). Finally, encourage your own followers to engage with you! Post polls and other “grabby” content, and try to respond to all questions and comments.

However, Hibbert doesn’t limit themselves to reader interactions and book talk, also posting thoughtfully about social issues — such as how to combat racism and ableism — as well as the occasional funny video, exemplifying just the right balance for any 21st century author.

For writers looking to stay hip with the youths (we hope the irony of this sentence is self-evident), a carefully cultivated Instagram account is a must. The good news is that Instagram is actually pretty easy to access and use, and you definitely don’t need to be posting on all of Instagram’s different channels constantly.

For those who are hazy on these features, here’s a quick rundown:

  • Posts are the good old-fashioned content Instagram’s always had. Most accounts publish 2-3 posts per week, which appear on the main Instagram feed and their profiles.
  • Stories are temporary pieces of content that appear for only 24 hours. In addition to images and videos, authors can also post interactive content like polls, quizzes, and countdowns (to your book launch , for example). You can also create Story Highlights that remain on your profile permanently, for important topics where you have more than 10 pieces of content to share (10 is the limit for regular posts).
  • Reels are a recent addition to Instagram, allowing users to create snappy videos up to 30 seconds each, in the vein of TikTok.
  • IGTV is for longer, more thoughtfully produced video content — Q&As, in-depth commentary, etc. — that runs 1-15 minutes long. These videos appear under the IGTV tab on your profile, and you can even add them to an ongoing series on a topic.
  • Finally, Guides are lengthy Story-like content that users can tap through to get information on a topic. Guide Types include Places, Products, and Posts — so for example, if you had done setting research for a book, you might promote it by posting a Place Guide to that area.

Now that you (hopefully) understand the five major forms of Instagram content, let’s talk specific tactics for writers.

Tips for authors on Instagram

🤓 Think reader-first. Instagram is a reader’s paradise, #bookstagram being the massive subculture that it is. So while you can connect with fellow authors on IG, you’ll want to tailor your strategy more to readers. Consider creating videos, Story Highlights, Guides that tie into literary content, and relate them back to your own work in a fun way!

🎁 Host giveaways. On a similar note, Instagram is the perfect place to do giveaways: people get a clear visual sense of what you’re offering, and you’ll likely gain quite a few followers and comments because engagement is so high. Try offering up a free copy of your book, another author’s book, or whatever your followers are interested in.

📖 Make the most of Stories. Many people underestimate Stories, but they’re the best way to build a rapport with your followers! Again, any kind of interactive content is good for this. Consider creating Story templates so your Stories have an immediately recognizable brand, and remember to save your best ones as Story Highlights.

💯 Above all, keep it real. Instagram has a reputation for being “fake” — what with all the heavily edited photos, ghostwritten captions , etc. — so it’s best to sidestep the label, unilateral and untrue though it is, by being as earnest as possible. Give your followers what they really want: to get to know the real you!

Pinterest for authors

Ah, Pinterest: a haven for the craft- and literature-obsessed alike. This platform, which allows you to create your own themed virtual corkboards, has been described as a “non-social” social network: most users just make their boards and add to them independently, without needing to interact with other users.

As a result, Pinterest is the ideal platform for authors who want to tap into readers’ cravings for visual content — as they might on Instagram — but without the pressure of having to constantly engage. And as you might expect, Pinterest works best for writers whose works have a distinctive aesthetic, especially science fiction and fantasy stories. It’s a marvelous platform for bringing your vision to life, allowing you to choose from a vast ocean of possibilities.

If that sounds right up your alley, here are some tips to give you the Pinterest assist!

Tips for authors on Pinterest

💼 Get a Business account. It’s free to convert your regular Pinterest account into a Business account , and it offers many useful features: analytics, ad management, and more. Even if you only intend to use Pinterest casually, it’s still worth getting the free Business account, as it allows you to have a cover photo.

📌 Use Rich Pins for products and articles. Rich Pins are Pins with data attached that click through to an external page, like the sales page for your book or a blog post you’ve written. Rich Pins are great for previewing content you’ve posted elsewhere, and many authors use them to promote their free and discounted books!

📥 Pay attention to your inbox. Though Pinterest isn’t nearly as demanding as other social platforms, users are able to message you and send you Pins. Check your inbox (Pinbox?) once a week, just to be sure you’re not missing anything.

🎉 Have fun with it! Business features notwithstanding, as an author you probably won’t do most of your business on Pinterest — so have fun experimenting with different Pins, and don’t be shy about adding new content to your boards. Even if you can’t articulate why you like a certain Pin, better to save it now so you can find it again later.

Note, however, that she doesn’t force herself to stick solely to literary aesthetics, and has an extensive board of home decor ideas as well. Like Twitter, Pinterest is a great place to try new things; take your cue from Bardugo and pin whatever strikes your fancy. Even if it’s not related to your writing, readers will enjoy the sneak peek into your personal life.

Other social platforms

Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest are the biggest author-friendly social media platforms, but they’re not the only ones out there. Here are five more slightly “niche” platforms you might consider and what they have to offer writers.

🧭 Reedsy Discovery

Reedsy Discovery is a book review, recommendation, and discussion platform that’s perfect for the literary-minded. As an author, you can submit your book for review and receive a customizable author page to help promote your book, post personal updates (including reader polls and book recommendations), and keep track of who you interact with on the platform.

It’s a fantastic place to connect both with other authors (especially indie authors!) and with readers, who enjoy the cutting-edge recommendations and meaningful engagement over what they love most: books. Discovery is definitely a boon for authors who want readers' eyes and early reviews, and for readers who crave connection and smooth functionality in their social reading platforms (compared to, say, the next site on this list).

📚 Goodreads

Every author should claim their profile and books on Goodreads for verification purposes, but you might consider using Goodreads for social media as well. Its key advantage, like Discovery, is that it’s tailored to authors and readers. Readers can also see when you add any information about your upcoming book(s), as well as any reviews you write.

The downside is that it takes a lot of work to build your following on Goodreads alone. Roxane Gay , for example, has managed it by releasing several books and writing tons of reviews… but her circumstances, by her own admission , are unusually conducive to productivity.

This is why we generally recommend having Goodreads as an author and posting occasional updates, but not making it one of your primary social platforms, as most authors will find it’s too much work. Still, if you love writing book reviews, it could be worth a shot!

👩🏻‍💻 Tumblr

Tumblr is the classic “fandom” platform: a place where people have long congregated to celebrate their favorite TV shows, movies, and of course, books. Many well-known authors have maintained their own Tumblr accounts over the years, reblogging Pinterest-like aesthetic posts, talking about their writing, and responding to lucky fans (leading to occasional gems like this .)

Tumblr has recently fallen by the wayside but there’s still a strong fan presence on the site. If you already use Tumblr, definitely try posting your own work for your followers; it could be the perfect opportunity to gain relevant readers. And even if you’re starting fresh on Tumblr, you can try getting involved in fandoms yourself — if nothing else, you’ll meet a ton of people who are similarly passionate about books.

You might think we’d have mentioned YouTube earlier in this guide, given its substantial user base. But truth be told, it’s not an ideal social network for most authors, mainly because it’s tough to churn out consistently engaging long-form videos about your writing.

That said, it’s great for readers — by which we mean BookTubers and the people who watch them. As on Goodreads, if you love reviewing books, you might try to build a YouTube following based on that. But you probably won’t have much luck coming at it solely from a writer’s perspective — not to mention that producing regular YouTube videos takes a ridiculous amount of work, much more than just snapping a few Stories a day.

👯‍♀️ TikTok

If you’re interested in creating videos to boost your brand, TikTok might be your best bet: it’s the latest platform designed for creative short-form video content, and it’s blown up over the past couple of years. While most popular content remains wacky and meme-based, BookTok is a steadily growing faction that could easily become the literary hub of the future.

For now, TikTok remains in the same category as YouTube — good for readers, not so much for writers — but it’s worth keeping an eye on, and could be fun to experiment with as an author. By nature of its novelty, whatever you do as a writer on TikTok will be breaking new ground; if you get it right, you could become one of the platform’s pioneers.

Running ads on social media

Finally, if maintaining an organic social media presence of any kind feels like a lot of work (which, to be fair, it is!), consider taking the “organic” part out of the equation and instead creating paid ads on social media to help new readers find your books.

Running ads on Facebook is one of the best ways for authors looking to acquire readers they otherwise wouldn’t be able to reach. Or you can expand your range by trying Amazon ads and BookBub ads for your book — both of which are excellent for targeted ads, as the people on those platforms are already looking for new things to read!

Whether you aim for organic growth or paid ads on social media, it’s going to take some work to succeed. But once you find the right platform(s), get situated within your niche, and maybe even start making some friends, you should find it’s not so much a drag as an exciting new challenge — and could even turn into a lifelong hobby. On most other social media platforms, the bio sections are the same for personal brands and company profiles. On LinkedIn, though, this differs.

For personal accounts, your bio is the Summary section of your profile. For companies and organizations, the bio is the About section on the company page. We’ll share tips for both below.

Character limit: 2,600 characters

Your summary section is one of the first sections that people will read, and a good one can make the difference between skipping your profile or reading through the rest of it.

Whether you’re looking to attract recruiters, followers, or business partners, here are my best tips:

  • Make it engaging with a conversational tone! This is one place in which you can be a little more informal

Although you have 2,000 characters to fill your company’s “description” section, I would strongly suggest not using the full space. LinkedIn company pages offer a lot of different fields to fill in, so it’s not necessary to fit everything about your business within the bio.

Similar to personal accounts, I think the best way to use your bio is to highlight your business’ strongest selling points. Just keep in mind that visitors to your company page are more likely to be interested in working with you than buying from you.

Your Pinterest bio introduces yourself and your business to your audience. Pinterest is highly visual, so your bio should be short and to the point, letting your actual content speak for itself.

While hashtags are useful in other social media bios, Pinterest doesn’t work that way. Instead of focusing on hashtags, Pinterest uses keywords in your bio, post descriptions, and board descriptions to help relevant users discover you.

With this in mind, make sure your bio contains relevant descriptions of yourself or your brand, and choose your words strategically (without sounding like an SEO robot).

I’m considering the option of quitting FB , I can’t log into my account on my laptop and when I click on the forgot password option , it says the account is not available , it’s so frustrating considering the fact that I have a page of over 2000 followers , right now I’m looking for an alternative .

One I found recently that is very civilized is Cake.co It was founded by one of the founders of SmugMug. It is mainly a community of people sharing in groups. It is rumored to be going away due to lack of activity, but after the rumors hit things have picked up a bit.

I have this unusual problem of having gotten into trouble with the Russian security services. I’m looking for a place to discuss this issue, but having some considerably difficulty finding anything appropriate. Any suggestions?

Hi, Interesting list. My family have joined MeWe, where there is no tracking and no advertising at all. There is freedom of speech…You will NOT be censored. It’s free but you can also upgrade for a small fee. It is a little difficult to navigate though and doesn’t have as nice an interface as say FB, or GAB.

Gab is very similar looking to fb, but no factchecking etc. Also Rumble. The only problem is getting your friends and family members to change over and get used to another system. I have deleted fb and insta and twitter off my phone now, so I hardly go there anymore. I want to download all my photos first, before deleting these accounts. I’m tired of all the fact checking and deleting of posts that fb ‘doesn’t agree with’ and calls ‘hate speech’ or ‘inciting violence’ just for having an opinion which is different to theirs.

After spending some time on MeWe I actually think it is a much better interface than Facebook. Once you go through and set things up, you can cruise right through it and see everything, not just what someone else thinks you need to see.

I agree that it is hard to get friends and family over to MeWe – change is hard. I wish MeWe had the option to have posts have links. If you click on the time in Facebook it is a link you post in comments. If I could create my post on MeWe, then post a link to it on Facebook, I would do that all day long to get people to click over to it!

I was very happy with my social media detox, after years of toxicity with basically zero value on some of the main platforms. But social networking is (potentially) very useful, since it allows us to create social dynamics that could never exist in real life. So I was looking for alternatives, but most are just variations of bigger platforms, or for niches. Storyexpe.com seems to be the best alternative, even if it’s still very new. It has a very beautiful design, and as much as I know, it’s not based on data tracking (that’s what they write). So far I can say that for the first time I’m growing a really valuable social networking profile, without all this “madness” like endless hashtagging, follow- unfollow, or useless comments made of always the same emojis.

I left Facebook for being censored & them wanting to verify my family members. I’m an old woman and a friend of mine for 50+ years, wanted to list me as a relative and Facebook would not allow it. I feel like there is something very wrong with Facebook.

Facebook just suspended me for one day. My post was ” Figures lie and liars figure.” Then I posted underneath that “All men are liars. BIBLE”. I was suspended. The post was negative toward the Corona-virus and the Dr that heads up the News. Both of those are quotes that have been around before I was born.

I left FB for many of the same reasons mentioned and more. Why do I need to give them a Cellphone number? Why can’t I use my home phone number – Why do they need a phone number at all? And of course the community standards (Whatever that is) You can have a profile pic with pure nudity in it but you cannot go against their political belief system? Seriously?

I stumbled onto MeWe and I think I have found a social media home. It loos and feels very much like FB but without the censorship, Community standards and many of the other negatives of FB. It’s free but has paid options it lets you group chat and it’s super secure. Give it a try and see what you think of it, If you have left FB Kudo’s to you! I’ll NEVER go back to it!

FB ran a WHITE SUPREMACIST VIDEO and when questioned about that said it didn’t go against COMMUNITY STANDARDS, WHATEVERTHEHELL those are. Though there are so many social media sites available, I feel it is not necessary for a business to promote themselves on each and every platform. Instead, they need to understand the ins and outs of each site. They need to understand which audience use which platform. And considering their target audience, they need to choose the social media sites to promote their business.

I agree. Though I do understand how some people don’t know what discord is. I can explain it in very few words. Skype for gamers. Though it does have a lot of weird people and the owners of discord reply in very weird ways, using a lot of w’s in their words that don’t need to or using emoticons like ‘uwu’ or ‘owo’ and being generally weird. As I said a lot of gamers and people on the internet who meme a lot use it. You can voice call, video call, text and make groups and servers on it. Very useful but its 13+ and specifically for gamers. I hope this helps. I see a lot of parents and adults saying that “Oh discord should be for adults because blah blah blah” but that’s a load of bull. As long as you be cautious, safe and don’t give away any personal details you’ll be fine and don’t accept any random friend requests and yes people swear but it has a filter that deletes any explicit and inappropriate content that people send and, I suggest only use discord when your 13.

I’m active on several social networks, the primary one being FB. However I’m getting very fed up with their censorship on posting, not to mention my lack of faith in their ability to provide adequate protection of my personal information/data.

I’m thinking that with Vero charging then the likelihood of trolls, fake users etc…. will be minimal, if any at all. Therefore being able to engage in social interaction similar to FB. Yes, I noticed MeWe isn’t on the list. Also GAB and Rumble. I’ve deleted FB and Instagram (which also isn’t on this list!) from off my phone. I still have it on my desktop, so I’m not wasting endless hours scrolling posts about nothing.

Going to try Vero. I like that there will be a cost at some point. I’d rather know the cost and pay it in cash than never know what is being stolen from me.

Who really wants to part with their money to engage on a social networking site when, as far as I’m aware, all others are free? My mindset is that the users wouldn’t be trolls, no fakes who snoop profiles etc… I use several social networking sites (G+ and YouTube being 2nd and 3rd ). Facebook being primary but which is beginning to drive me to distraction with its abundance of dictatorial rules and regulations (not to mention my lack of faith in their protection of my personal data). Hey Jamie, since you asked for suggestions I’d offer up Flixup (flixup.io). It lets you make video stories (like Instagram), but insert gifs and memes from pop culture. And then other people can use the clips that you share in their own ones. It’s by no means perfect, but it’s interesting.

Most of these are not known, its great to know them! I use inLinx, the first of its kind who takes privacy seriously.

For me, Facebook is a human and privacy violation on steroids. We live in an era that values privacy less and less and less. I value mine! I use disinformation everywhere. Yet when family and friends upload my pics to Facebook Facebook algorithms identify me.

Every time you leave your account active on your computer those little Facebook linkis that are now at the bottom of most of the pages you go to report your browsing history back to Facebook. Who the hell do they think they are? I have never created a Facebook account yet through accounts of Friends I see my full name identified. Its happened on more than one occasion which is a bit scary if you ask me. I had a very informative site on Facebook.I only had 300 followers,but still. However,they suddenly(after 3 years of it being there)decided to delete it without visible reason. It was a clean website,nothing untoward,like others about murdering people and killing animals,etc. They refused to respond to my inquiry as to why they deleted it.Nothing. I made it a gain,and they did the same I hate Facebook and am glad to see people leaving it in droves.

Great list and please don’t get me wrong here, I am sick to death of Facebook. Is there another alternative TO Facebook? Put simply, NO!!! The other social media sites are devoid of the basic common denominator, Collaboration!! While they MIGHT get you a closed network or a specific audience, it doesn’t cater for interaction with all of the platform. What we really need is somewhere that has a home page with your posts that is broadcast to ALL other users or chosen crowds. We need a news feed to cast all of the posts for people to interact with. Twitter, Snapchat, Google+ and Instagram etc etc, just don’t cut the mustard as far as this goes. Some of the others mentioned are specific to specific audiences and are nothing like Facebook. That is why all other alternatives fail dismally!! I wish I had the money and development time to produce it, but alas I don’t.

I get your point that there is no real alternative to Facebook, but what the other networks don’t want to do is become a Facebook. They want to offer something different which is how they can make in-roads on the Facebook monster.

This happens because most of the people are just followers. One uses facebook and rest follow just like zombies. To Create anything like facebook, you need to invest millions of $, but still, FB, Amazon, google, Microsoft, apple, twitter, are controlling you and everything you do online.

Try to use messenger with a family member, then switch to FB page. You will notice that if your are talking to your family member about a specific items, the item will appear as an ad on your Fb page. Google does the same thing. You can call it power of suggestion, AI, or call it what ever you want, I call it Brain washing.

Its like, if you tell yourself a lie so many times, eventually it wont be a lie anymore, but just reality. I Tried to start a little site on my own, thinking some people would like it out of 7B of them. Yeah I get few visitors here and there, but nothing steady. I tried google Adsense and noticed that all the new clicks were coming from the same location but different IP.

The best part is that Google is a $30B company and there is no ways to contact them other then a single phone number. Here is when I get little upset, people know about google, but everyone still uses it like there isnt any other choices. Well, actually there isnt. Social sites are just for gather info about you and use it to make money. For us its just a way to communicate with others.

Its even creepier when you talk about something face to face and then it shows up. No searching, no messaging, just a simple sitting in a cafe conversation. That’s happened to me a few times now.

Facebook is blocking everything I say or do, even down to replying to their own question. “There’s a problem & they’re trying to fix it”. IF that were true they wouldn’t be accusing me of not following COMMUNITY STANDARDS & then asking me to explain if I don’t think it’s true. And then, won’t let my reply go through. That’s why I agree with Paula Tan, we need something close enough to fbk, but w/o their PC Police reading, watching our every action & yet different enough to not be sued by FBK.

One of the things that isnt talked about at all in this is the core features of telegram. Which is NOTHING like whatsapp. You can make gigantic chatrooms full of thousands of people and have different moderators mod things. You can also make your own channel that is essentially your own timeline and share things by forwarding things you post in them. A lot of artists now make their own channels to promote their artwork and share with other uses in massive chatrooms. You can also subscribe to people’s news feeds and other things like how facebook has it.

The only thing telegram is missing is the graphical interface. It’s still stuck looking a bit like old AIM and MSN messenger.

It’s really really really not comparable to whatsapp at all.

I used it daily when I was studying abroad in Seoul. It’s sooo useful. Literally a text messaging, group chating, taxi calling, voice calling, social media networking, banking, photo sharing, location sharing, GPSing, conference calling, video gaming app all in one.

Think Facebook Messenger, mixed with Uber, Google Maps, WhatsApp, GamePigeon, and Venmo.

How about Bubbly? Think Twitter but with voice snippets instead of short texts

Academy Award winner Aaron Sorkin has reiterated his plans to write a sequel to his acclaimed drama, The Social Network , examining the origins of Facebook , one that will home in on the social media platform’s impact on U.S. democracy.

On a just dropped episode of entertainment business podcast The Town , taped live in Washington, D.C. atr WME’s White House Correspondents Dinner pre-party last night , Sorkin said, “Look, yeah, I’ll be writing about this. I blame Facebook for January 6.”

Sorkin did share, though, that he’s been “trying” to crack the project as a film specifically. “Facebook has been, among other things, tuning its algorithm to promote the most divisive material possible, because that is what will increase engagement. That is what will get you to, what they call inside the hallways of Facebook, ‘the infinite scroll,” Sorkin said. “There’s supposed to be a constant tension at Facebook between growth and integrity. There isn’t; there’s just growth.”

Sources close to Sorkin stress that this project is in “very, very early stages” and has no relation to a previous January 6 project he’d spoken about making, which is no longer active.

Sorkin has repeatedly alluded to the prospect of a Social Network sequel in recent years, telling the Happy Sad Confused podcast in 2020 that he intended to examine “the dark side of Facebook” but stressing, “I will only write it if [original filmmaker David Fincher] directs it. If Billy Wilder came back from the grave and said he wanted to direct it, I’d say I’d only do it with David.”

Inspired by the Ben Mezrich book The Accidental Billionaires , the original Social Network delved into the founding of Facebook and the legal battles that followed. Starring Jesse Eisenberg, Andrew Garfield, Armie Hammer and more, the film grossed over $224M worldwide and won multiple Oscars, including one for Sorkin in the category of Best Adapted Screenplay.

Aaron Sorkin confirmed during a live recording of “The Town” podcast that he is currently working on some kind of sequel to “ The Social Network ,” David Fincher’s acclaimed 2010 drama about the creation of Facebook that won Sorkin the Oscar for best adapted screenplay.

“Look, yeah, I’ll be writing about this,” Sorkin said about the social media company’s recent years. “I blame Facebook for January 6.”

Sorkin would not answer why he blamed Facebook for Trump supporters storming the U.S. Capitol, but he teased: “You’re going to need to buy a movie ticket.”

Sorkin added, “If Mark Zuckerberg woke up tomorrow morning and realized there is nothing you can buy for $120 billion that you can’t buy for $119 billion dollars, ‘So how about if I make a little bit less money? I will tune up integrity and tune down growth.’ Yes, you can do that by honestly switching a one to a zero and a zero to a one.”

Whatever Sorkin is cooking up sounds more like a spiritual successor to “The Social Network” than a direct sequel. The 2010 film starred Jesse Eisenberg as Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and was a critical darling (it earned eight Oscar nominations, including best picture) and a box office hit with $224 million at the worldwide box office. Quentin Tarantino even named it the best film of the 2010s.

Sorkin first floated the idea of penning a sequel to “The Social Network” in 2021 when he said that “what has been going on with Facebook these last few years is a story very much worth telling, and there is a way to tell it as a follow up to ‘The Social Network,’ and that’s as much as I know.” But he had also once said on the  “Happy Sad Confused” podcast  that the only way a sequel to the movie would move forward is if David Fincher agrees to direct it.

As for Eisenberg, who earned an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of Zuckerberg, he’s long expressed an openness to reprising the role in a potential “Social Network” sequel.

“Oh, yeah,” he once said. “To play a good role in a popular thing is very rare. This was an opportunity to play a complicated character that you’d normally play onstage or an art film, but on a big scale. For me, that was incredibly fortunate.”

Social media continues to grow as a channel for news consumption

What we now describe as "The Greatest Generation" is remembered for living through the Second World War, but forgotten is that they also endured another war—one that saw the first battle between competing mediums.

The "Press-Radio War" of the 1930s began as newspaper publishers sought to maintain their dominance of the news market, and even launched political, economic and legal campaigns to prevent news from being broadcast on radio. The relationship between the older print media and the new medium of radio was far from friendly, but the effectiveness and reliability of broadcast journalism were confirmed by the coverage during the Second World War.

After the war, television was seen as the bastard child of radio news and the film newsreel, and it was almost immediately disowned by those in the news business as superficial, trivial, and incomplete, noted Joe Saltzman for Journalism History . It took until 1963, when President John F. Kennedy was assassinated that television truly came into its own. More recently, TV was able to capture the tragic moments of 9/11 in real time.

All of the "traditional media" has been slowly displaced by the new "online" media, and that now includes social media—which is where upwards of half of Americans now get their news. Newspapers, magazines, radio, and television alike have had to embrace new media, and that includes the social media component.

Yet, is enough being done?

"It's been true for a while now that social media continues to grow as a channel for news consumption. News media doesn't just need to tailor stories for social media audiences, they should have different strategies for different platforms. News consumption on TikTok looks different than it does on Reddit or Facebook," explained Dr. Cliff Lampe, professor of information and associate dean for Academic Affairs in the School of Information at the University of Michigan.

Moreover, a lot of news organizations are moving online to address the needs of their readership.

"It certainly is a case of 'if you can't beat them, join them,'" added Dr. Julianna Kirschner, lecturer in the Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism at the University of Southern California. "More people seek news content on social media, so many news outlets have started to adapt to this changing world of information sharing. For those that haven't adapted yet, they should consider it."

It Can't Be More Of The Same

In many ways, radio attempted to mimic newspaper reporting, but it was TV that slowly found that stories could be presented to cater both to the medium and to the audience. That has remained true in the age of cable news, where content has been directed at different demographics.

We should expect more changes to come, especially in how news is consumed.

"Different audiences need unique approaches," suggested Kirschner. "Younger news consumers will be most perceptive of news content tailored to social media platforms. Adapting content for this context might better reach these readers where they are. For this audience, short-form videos and brief news overviews would be a couple of possibilities, alongside longer delivery formats."

The older generations may not be so easily swayed at first.

"However, as older generations consume more content on social media platforms, they will likely come around to short-form news over time with more exposure on these platforms," Kirschner continued.

"Some of the adjustments that need to happen are form-based—for example, short-form video use, or social media friendly ledes," said Lampe. "Some of the changes will have to be practice-based. Stories are now much more 'alive' in social media than they were in the broadcast era."

The role of reporters may also evolve, and that could include far greater engagement with the audience.

"It's not that every reporter needs to be in the comment section of the articles they have, but a strategy for the post-publication life of stories can be important," noted Lampe.

Politics Aside—Maybe Not

Though cable news has been tailored largely on political lines, social media may be even more split into political camps.

"We are in politically divisive times. When taken on their own, social media already make consuming a balanced view of news challenging, especially if these platforms are the only source of news for some users," said Kirschner. "Social media platforms are more interested in viewership and engagement, so they will prioritize news content that already supports users' respective viewpoints."

Likewise, content including positions to which users disagree will be shuffled further to the bottom of users' feeds.

"The only exception to this is rage bait, which includes news or opinion pieces framed to increase outrage," warned Kirschner. "This content prompts users to reinforce their beliefs when faced with differing perspectives. Social media platforms will promote and increase access to consensus-based news content and rage bait. However, a balanced view isn't possible in such spaces, because such content doesn't keep eyes on screens. Therefore, censorship through algorithmic sorting has and will continue to increase."

Social Can't Be Ignored

There has been the danger that Facebook, TikTok, X, etc. could be dismissed as fads. However, many old-school newspaper reporters likely believed the same of radio and then TV—and of course, few thought this Internet thing would catch on!

Traditional news outlets need to be onboard.

"There is still a lingering belief in news media that social media will eventually go away, and they just have to outlast the moment. Social media will certainly evolve, but it's now a mature set of platforms that they should embrace," said Lampe. "What I hope doesn't change is the commitment to quality content."

Far-right news network OAN retracts article about Michael Cohen and Stormy Daniels

One America News Network retracted an article Monday that said former President Donald Trump's onetime attorney Michael Cohen had an affair with adult film star Stormy Daniels .

The March 27 article from the conservative news outlet quoted a post on X from a user who falsely claimed to have obtained information in 2018 from Daniels' then-attorney, Michael Avenatti. Citing Avenatti, the post claimed that Cohen and Daniels had been having an affair since 2006 and that Cohen "cooked up" the hush money scheme to extort the Trump Organization ahead of the 2016 election.

"To be clear, no evidence suggests that Mr. Cohen and Ms. Daniels were having an affair and no evidence suggests that Mr. Cohen 'cooked up' the scheme to extort the Trump Organization before the 2016 election," OAN said in a statement Monday.

The network said it was taking the story down “from all sites,” as well as “all social media.”

"This retraction is part of a settlement reached with Michael Cohen. Mr. Avenatti has denied making the allegations," the statement said. "OAN apologizes to Mr. Cohen for any harm the publication may have caused him."

Trump has pleaded  not guilty to 34 felony counts tied to allegations that he falsified business records related to hush money paid to Daniels during the 2016 presidential campaign. He has denied a relationship with Daniels. The trial began this month; both Cohen and Daniels are expected to testify.

In a statement Monday, Cohen blasted the retracted story's allegations.

“The notion that right before the election I would extort the man I fervently supported and believed was about to become president, all to make $130,000 that I did not even keep for myself, is beyond absurd. It’s just plain stupid,” Cohen said.

An attorney for Cohen said the retraction was “vindication for Michael Cohen.”

“He has faced severe consequences for telling the truth. With this action he has made clear that those who slander him will face their own consequences,” the attorney, Danya Perry, said in a statement.

Daniels also denied the allegations, OAN said in its statement Monday.

Her attorney separately called the article "reckless."

"OAN’s reckless reporting and publication of such a sensational claim endeavoring to disparage two likely witnesses in the Trump criminal trial is evidence of OAN’s desperation to service their true master," the attorney, Clark Brewster, said in a statement Monday. "Stormy is presently reviewing her options regarding OAN’s actionable conduct."

Avenatti, who is serving an unrelated prison sentence related to a fraud scheme, previously denied the claims in the article, calling them “completely fabricated, untrue and bogus.” He made those remarks in a statement through a paralegal, and OAN included them in an update to the story on April 4.

Tony Seruga, the author of the post that formed the basis of the article, did not immediately respond to a request for comment Monday evening.

OAN settled a defamation lawsuit out of court with the voting machine company Smartmatic, according to a filing this month. Two years ago, the network settled a defamation lawsuit with a pair of Georgia election workers who had accused it of falsely claiming they committed ballot fraud during the 2020 presidential election.
