I ordered my 2020 X5 July 3rd and got it August 21st. It was stuck in the “Production Begins” stage for a little more than a week. Was very aggravating and seemed like a week long tease!

When you call the 800 number, they tell you estimated completion date. Not sure how accurate it is but worth a try.  

Pretty accurate in my experience, I called BMW Genius and they said production would complete on 10/3, which it did. Between quality and dispatched from factory its taken 3 days for me.

I think you'll find 'production started' means that BMW has started to order the unique things like seats and other unique bits that aren't made in the local factory from their vendors. THe body is built there, painted, and assembled. It doesn't actually start body assembly until all the bits are ready to be delivered so once it starts down the production line, they're ready to be attached. The actual production once it is on the assembly line is usually finished the same day it starts. In my case, the seats were on backorder, so it took over a month before it was physically on the production starts status.  

My dealer told me within a couple of days of my order what week it was scheduled, and why there was a delay...in my case, it was the seats were backordered in the color I selected. They had a slot earlier it could have been put into, but because of that backorder, it slipped to their next available one for a priority one (already sold to a customer) slot.  

My customer order, pre-corona took 4 weeks.  

As has been said, a lot depends on how many production slots your dealer has, and if all of them have been already sold. The X45e seems to be in high demand, so there may or may not be slots open all that soon. Dealers do want to have one on their lot for that customer that walks in, so may not be willing to give up all of their slots...depends on their philosophy and finances. I for one, didn't want to order mine until I had driven one, and I don't think I'm alone. Then, like we've seen on some of the available options, BMW has removed some, potentially for supply reasons, and potentially because they were not popular enough, so if a choice is in short supply, that could delay things. The body is built in-house and only based on orders...IOW, they don't have a lot of anything just sitting around waiting to be sold. There's very little warehouse space in a BMW factory as parts come in from vendors or is built as needed to complete a vehicle. If you ever get a chance, you should take a factory tour. I've had the opportunity to tour the one in Munich and here in the states over the years...impressive in both scale and operation.  

Pretty annoying experience for me. Car finished production and was released to carrier on 10/10. It was in transit for several days and then made it to “at the port” on 10/23(Friday) and my sales guy told me on 10/26(Monday) that it should be ready in 2 or 3 days. It’s been sitting there for a full week. No update today.  

I am supposed to pick it up late this afternoon.  

At this point things will go fast with several stages completing at the same time.  

I love how it says “Today’s the day!” Mines been there for a week.. doesn’t make things easier that I got my Juicebox EV charger today and installed it. Now, just waiting for the car!  

Production begins means BMW has ordered all of the parts (tires, wheels, seats, carpeting, wiring harnesses, etc.) to build your vehicle and based on the projected delivery times, set up a slot on the production floor to actually build the body, paint it, and then assemble it for delivery to you. Once that status occurs, the dealer cannot change any aspect of the build, as it is 'locked in'. So, in some manner, production has begun, just maybe not at the BMW factory. Neither BMW nor their vendors keep a big supply of bits in stock...they're built and delivered as needed at the assembly plant. When I toured the factory in Munich, they said they had about 200 tractor trailers a day delivering parts at about 5-minute intervals, all scheduled to deliver stuff that went directly out onto the factory floor for use on building specific vehicles. It would have been more, but they shut that plant down on the third shift to placate the houses that were built around it as the city expanded over the years...when originally built, it was out in the boonies. There's very little room in the factory dedicated to storage of anything...stuff comes in, gets installed, and the vehicle moves down the line and then departs completed. The body will get built and painted about the day before they start adding the rest of the things to make it complete, test it, and get it out the door. The last steps can happen very quickly, and the customer portal doesn't get updated constantly, so you'll see a rash of things happen all in one update near the end. Mine sat waiting carrier assignment for a week, which bummed me out, but it was built when they said it would be.  

Awesome! Thanks for the insights! I called BMW Genius and they said estimated completion date is May 6th, so I’ll be watching for things to move forward from today onwards. Wish I could do the delivery in person down in SC, but they aren’t doing BMW factory tours due to COVID, which is half the experience to me.

I ordered a 3 series G20. I thought about the M340 and drive one home a few times and they are definitely cool and quick but I’m getting older and do I really need to beat everybody light to light at the trade off of 15k and several miles per gallon? Nah. It’s my first true adult decision even though I’m 40 to get the 330xi and not the M340xi. I’d rather save all that cash, have a cheap ass payment and get 34MPG while still enjoying everything the new G20 has to offer. 2021 G20 330xi Mineral Grey metallic Black Sensatec seats and dash M sport package 19inch black wheels with performance runflats Shadow package Driving assistance package Parking assistance package Dynamic handling package Open pore oak Executive package Parking assistance package Remote start Harmon kardon Heated seating Wifi Everything except automatic trunk. Hahaha I hear ya. Love the options! Im excited for our X5 45e even though the thing is a tank at 5,600 lbs!!!

They definitely are, I think they started them back up again last June or July. She may have been confused and was thinking of the regular factory tours, I don't know if those are back or not. Edit: Here is a summary of a recent PCD experience that was posted on another forum: A quick shuttle ride over and into the classroom you go for your morning briefing. I've met several instructors here and all are top notch, my wife was super impressed that we had a female instructor in our group this time (Laura). After that out to the track for a little fun. My biggest complaint is that we don't get to spend all day or just a bunch more time on the track itself , but I guess they like to save that for the M-Schools. You get into small groups 3 cars each and go to different segments of the track to do braking tests, slalom and cornering (more track day light), and finally a skid wet skid pad to demo the stability control systems. This was the highlight of my day! My wife went first and I was riding in the back recording her spinning the 340i you use for this part of the day. After enabling the traction systems she floored it but never let off and took us over a cone and WAAAAAY down into the grass. Why WAS I NOT RECORDING THAT PART! I honestly haven't laughed that hard in a long time. I got my chance after that and had a blast engaging multiple spins and doing my best to drive out of them on throttle wheels still spinning - might not be how they instruct it but it's fun. Next up is a spin in the back of an M5 driven by one of the Pros at high speed around the track wheels spinning mostly drifting. It's loud, it's fun, it's over too quickly. Next up was the factory tour. It's well done, but honestly not nearly as deep and interesting as the one I got in Munich in the past. If you're looking for gift shop items get them here as there's more selection at the factory store than the PC. Before lunch we take some X5s onto the off road course. This is a really cool chance to see how they build for the worst. You take on hills that require you to use the front camera to see forward as you're looking at the sky, drive through a tight little river of deep water, and tip the car sideways to about 26degrees (according to the offroad menu in idrive) which doesn't look that bad from behind but feels like you're going to tip over in the passenger seat. One of my favorites is the 2 wheel teeter where only your front left and back right wheel are on the ground and if you can manage throttle and brakes well enough you can balance to the point where your body can rock the car or modulating the pedals decides which 3rd wheel comes down. Lunch Break - Lunch was fine, not memorably, but a good chance to make some new friends or pick the brains of some of the instructors. Last Step (Finally) - Delivery. I spent about an hour with Donnie who was fantastic crawling through all the new features and settings to get things at least initiated. My wife appreciated that I wasn't doing that during our road trip but found this part pretty boring.  

I ordered my X7 on June 1st and it just got scheduled for production today (6/17). I watched a video on the building of the X7. Once they officially start putting the car together, it seems that the entire build takes 2-3 days. (6 Hours for Body, 12 Hours for Paint, and a full day for assembly). Based on the day my car was ordered, my dealership (NJ) said that the car would likely be back in late June or early July (4 Weeks) but that they usually tell customers 6 weeks, just in case there is a delay. I can't wait to get this car! BMW X7 Assembly (SC)

BMW Awaiting Carrier Assignment – What Does This Mean?

You may have been wondering what the BMW awaiting carrier assignment means?

Perhaps you have ordered a brand new BMW. While there may be various options at car showrooms, you may be disinterested in what is available and want to have your very own BMW build on the company’s website.

Hence, it is important to understand what the timelines mean. This way you know exactly what to expect when you order and track your new vehicle.

This is what we will discuss today and some key points to understand about it. Let’s jump right into it.

BMW Awaiting Carrier Assignment

You may have decided to build your BMW vehicle on the website. Now, if you want to learn more about what to expect, you may need to search for the Product Ordering Guide or the POG. This is BMW’s official guide from the factory. 

The price list may appear the same and you can check the cost of every car option. So it is good to determine what BMW vehicle you want before you go to your dealer.

Now, an allocation allows you to specify the BMW according to what you like. It is a slot for your dealership to place an order for your vehicle. Every dealer has different allocations, depending on how much the company sells. It could be 2 slots for the M3 for each month, or it could be more.

When a deal has been made for your vehicle, you then need to submit your order and use the allocations provided. But do keep in mind that it takes some waiting time depending on the open slot available to the dealer. 

After placing your order, you will be provided with a production number.  Then, you are entered in the company’s build queue. During the peak of pandemic, this process took about 8 weeks when the vehicle is coming from Germany or up to 4 weeks when from South Carolina.

Do keep in mind that if you do not yet have a production number, you will also not have an allocation. So, it is important to make sure that your dealer gives you both – a production number and an allocation. Otherwise, it can be a real problem.

The moment you have the vehicle in schedule for the production, you should get your car’s actual VIN number, which is provided on the website.

When you are ready to track your order and know more about the status, you can either call the Genius hotline or go to BMWUSA.com. But in most cases, the website tends to lag some hours behind. So, we highly recommend that you contact the hotline for more updated information.

For those who have visited the BMW plant tour down in South Carolina, they have observed that the car can take under 24 hours to be fully assembled once the paint has dried. In fact, you can even see the car being built as you walk through the BMW plant. From being in the paint booth up to the ready for transport status, it usually takes only 24 hours. The process is quite fast – yet it takes time to be updated on the website.

If you have opted for a vehicle with an individual color, it will be painted in a different booth. Hence, the process can take a bit longer – it all depends on the color you choose. In some cases, the color may be approved quickly by BMW but others can take longer or even denied. 

This is why if you prefer your order to be delivered quicker, then you may want to forgo an individual order. Otherwise, you will have to take a little longer.

Next up, we go to the shipping. There are many factors that come to play here, mainly depending on where your vehicle is built.

If your vehicle is made in the United States, then it leaves the South Carolina factory via truck or train. On the website, you can see the “in transit” status. However, once you contact the hotline, they will be able to provide the mode of transportation and the company shipping it. Thus, you can track your order online.

But in the case of a vehicle built in Germany, this means it will need to cross the ocean to get to your location. You can also call BMW and ask about the name of the ship then check your order through marinetracker.com. Among the ports include Charleston, Bremerhaven, Southampton, New Jersey, Halifax, Brunswick, Baltimore, Zeebrugge, and Galveston.

The car may take 7 to 10 days if you are on the east coast and may be more than 2 weeks if on the west coast.

After getting off the train or boat, your car will then go to the Vehicle Processing Center. This will involve an inspection of your car and check for any damage. If there are issues during transit, your vehicle will be repaired. There is a mechanic, restoration shop and paint department in the VPC.

And lastly, we go to the delivery process. After arriving at the dealer, they will prep the vehicle by taking the protective wrapping off. They will also prepare the iDrive system based on your specific region.

In the case of an awaiting carrier assignment, this basically means that the company decides on the carrier that will carry your vehicle from the factory and then to the port. Once the vehicle arrives at the port, a ship is assigned to it. 

The next step after awaiting carrier assignment is dispatched from the factory, and then at the port and in transit. The process depends on how fast the company is able to fill the carrier with vehicles being delivered to your area. Others can go for a few days to several weeks.

Ordering a new BMW vehicle may require some waiting game before it is delivered to you. This is why it is important to know what happens throughout the process and contact the hotline if you wish to obtain up-to-date information about your order’s status.

How do I track the status of my new BMW vehicle order online?

Once production begins, you can track your new BMW via the My BMW portal.   If you’re a first-time BMW owner:

• Visit  MyGarage.bmwusa.com
• Click “Register now”
• Enter your information to set up an account and check the box to accept the Terms and Conditions.
• Check your email to complete the registration.
• Once you open the email, select “My Garage”

If you’re a current BMW owner, use the same log in credentials you use for your BMW ConnectedDrive account.   If you are unsure of your BMW ConnectedDrive credentials, contact BMW Assist at 888-333-6118 to obtain your email and password.

• Enter your BMW ID (email address) and Password of the primary account holder
• Click “Login”

Add your BMW for tracking.

• Click “Track My BMW” header
• Click “Track your new BMW”
• Or, click “Vehicle still in production?  Enter your Production Number instead” to enter the production number.
• Click “Next”
• Click “Add Vehicle”
• Once you add the vehicle, you can click “My Vehicles” on the My Garage menu, then “Track Status” to view a  production timeline. 

You will be able to track through the 16 events below.

• Order received – Your order has been received, and we’re making space in the production schedule.
• Scheduled for production – The factory has scheduled production of your unique BMW.
• Production begins – Today’s the day:  your BMW has entered the production queue.
• Exterior body assembly begins – Your BMW is taking shape.  Exterior body construction has begun.
• In the paint booth – Your BMW is ready to show its true colors in the paint shop.
• Entering assembly line – On to the assembly line, where your BMW really starts to come together.
• Assembly in progress – Your BMW is being assembled.
• Quality check – We’re doing our last checks to make sure your BMW is just right.
• Final assembly – Putting on the finishing touches that make every BMW special.
• Ready for transport – Your BMW is being prepared for transport.
• Awaiting carrier assignment – A carrier has been assigned to take care of your BMW.
• Dispatched from factory – Your new BMW has left the factory, and is on its way to you.
• At the port – Your BMW has arrived at the port.
• In transit – Your BMW is in transit.  It won’t be long now.
• At the dealership – It’s so close – your BMW has arrived at your BMW Center.
• Vehicle delivered – Your BMW is home.
