You’ll be asked between 6 and 8 multiple-choice questions on each case study.

The test lasts for 1 hour and 15 minutes, and the pass mark is 40 out of 50.

You need the test pass reference number when you book your Driver CPC part 4 practical demonstration test.

The pass letter is valid for 2 years.

CPC DRIVER CASE STUDY ASSESSMENT TESTS  FULL PRACTICE MOCK TESTS

(7 Practice Driver CPC Module 2 Case Study Assessments)

Trusted by 100,000s worldwide:

How2Become-Guideance-Since 2005-Icon

Why do I need to take a Case Study Assessment? The Case Study Assessment Test is a crucial component of the Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) qualification for several reasons. Firstly, it assesses drivers’ ability to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world situations, ensuring they can make informed decisions on the road. Secondly, it promotes ongoing learning and adaptation to changes within the transportation industry, enhancing drivers’ competency and professionalism. Lastly, the test standardises evaluation criteria, ensuring all CPC holders meet consistent standards of excellence, thereby enhancing public trust and safety. In essence, the Case Study Assessment Test plays a pivotal role in upholding the integrity of the profession and safeguarding road users by ensuring drivers possess the necessary skills and knowledge to operate safely and responsibly.

ABOUT THE DRIVER CPC  CASE STUDY ASSESSMENT

The Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) Case Study Assessment is a comprehensive evaluation tool designed to test drivers’ ability to apply their knowledge and expertise in real-world scenarios. Through a series of carefully crafted case studies, drivers are presented with challenging situations that they may encounter during their professional driving careers. These case studies cover a wide range of topics, including road safety, vehicle maintenance, driver health and well-being, and compliance with legal and regulatory requirements. By assessing how drivers analyse, prioritise, and respond to these scenarios, the Case Study Assessment provides valuable insights into their practical skills, decision-making abilities, and overall readiness to operate safely and effectively on the road.

Moreover, the Case Study Assessment serves as a dynamic learning experience for drivers, offering opportunities to deepen their understanding of industry standards, best practices, and emerging issues. By engaging with realistic case studies, drivers are encouraged to reflect on their own practices, identify areas for improvement, and stay abreast of developments within the transportation sector. The test itself is made up of 50 questions presented in groups of 6-8 questions per scenario. The test will contain six different scenarios.

Once you have a provisional licence you can book the CPC part 2 case studies test. It does not matter if you have yet to pass the Driver CPC part 1 theory test.

Licence for Driver CPC Case Study Test

After you book CPC module 2 (case studies test) you will need to take one of these driver licences with you:

  • Great Britain photocard driving licence.
  • Northern Ireland photocard driving licence and paper counterpart.
  • EU photocard driving licence (and paper counterpart if you have it).

Note : You may not have a photocard driving licence. In this case, take your paper driver’s licence and a valid passport. Failing to have the right documents means they will cancel your test and you will lose the fee.

How CPC Part 2 Test Works

Seven different short story case studies make up part two of the test. They are based on real situations that you may come across while driving Lorries or buses for a living . But, you will work through each of the scenarios on a computer.

Note : You need to answer between 6 and 8 multiple-choice questions for each case CPC case study test. The CPC part 2 test will last for 1 hour and 15 minutes. The CPC module 2 pass mark is 40 out of 50 (at least 80%).

Driver CPC Part 2 Case Studies Test Result

You will receive a letter at the test centre with the results. It will show the grade for the particular part of the case studies test that you took.

There will be a test pass reference number written on the letter. You need the number to book the Driver CPC part 4 practical demonstration test. The pass letter and reference number is valid for two (2) years.

Note : It is important to pass the Driver CPC part 4 practical demonstration test within the two year period. Failing to do so means you would need to pass the part 2 case studies test again.

What happens if You Fail the CPC Case Studies Tests?

Several things will happen if you fail the CPC case study test. A result letter provides feedback informing why you failed. You can go ahead and book another case studies test straight away. But, you must wait at least three (3) clear working days before you can resit the tests.

DVSA Cancelled Tests

It is uncommon but the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency may cancel the test at short notice. In this case, you can apply for a refund to cover your out-of-pocket expenses.

Steps to become a professional truck driver.

This is an overview of the steps you must take to become a qualified professional driver in your chosen licence category.

To obtain a category C (CPC truck) driving licence you must hold a full valid, category B (car or light van) driving licence and successfully complete all the relevant Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) requirements. You must also prove your identity and your entitlement to a driving licence or learner permit. This means proving that you are at least 18 years of age when applying for a category C (truck) learner permit, that you are normally resident in Ireland, that you have a valid address and personal public services number (PPSN), and that you are medically fit to drive. You should also ensure that your vehicle is safe, roadworthy, insured, taxed and displays L-plates. If you previously obtained a full category C (truck) licence on or before 9 September 2009, you may be exempt from some or all Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) requirements.

The theory test is computer-based and user-friendly. You can book an appointment to take the truck theory test at one of our 40+ theory test centres nationwide. The theory test checks your knowledge of topics such as the Rules of the Road, risk perception, eco-driving, hazard awareness, and safe driving behaviour. When you pass the theory test you are issued with a theory test certificate. This is valid for up to two years.

The case study test requires you to answer questions on three real-life situations a professional CPC truck driver might face. The test is computer-based and user-friendly. It lasts about 120 minutes and can be taken at home or in one of the 40+ theory test centres nationwide. When you pass the case study test you are issued with a case study test certificate. This is valid for up to two years.

A learner permit allows you to drive on all public roads, except motorways, for the purposes of learning to drive a truck and only drive when accompanied by someone who has held a full, valid driving licence in the same category for more than two years.

To prepare for your practical driving test, it is recommended that all new first-time category C (truck) learner permit holders take lessons with an RSA Approved Driving Instructor. These will help you develop the additional driving and road safety awareness skills you will need to drive a truck professionally.

Before taking the practical driving test you must have passed the category C (truck) or combined C and D (truck and bus) driver theory test and hold a valid category C learner permit. The practical driving test checks your knowledge of the Rules of the Road, your ability to drive competently and safely in accordance with those rules and with regard for other road users. The test takes about 90 minutes. It's a combination of questions to test your knowledge and a practical test of your driving skills and awareness.

Before taking the walkaround test you must have passed the category C (truck) or combined C and D (truck and bus) driver theory test, hold a valid category C learner permit and passed the case study test. The walkaround test checks your ability to keep both your vehicle and passengers safe and secure. The test takes about 30 minutes. We recommend that you complete both your practical driving test and walkaround test on the same day.

When you pass the practical driving test you are issued with a certificate of competency. When you pass the walkaround test you are issued with a copy of the tester's marking sheet. Both are valid for up to two years. You must apply for a category C (truck) driving licence within that time. This allows you to drive on all public roads, including motorways, but not in a professional capacity. If you are still a category B (car and light van) novice driver, you must display N-plates on any vehicle you drive for the first two years.

Once you get your category C (truck) licence you must then apply for your driver CPC card. You cannot drive professionally until you get this card. You must have passed all four CPC tests (driver theory test, case study test, practical driving test, and walkaround test) before you can apply for your Driver CPC card.

Getting your driver CPC card is just one step in becoming a truly safe and competent professional truck driver. You should continue to drive carefully and build up your experience in different traffic, weather, lighting and road conditions. The Road Safety Authority offers a range of learning materials that will help you develop your road safety awareness and skills. To stay qualified and maintain your driver CPC card you must attend mandatory RSA training every year for five years.

You can now easily manage all your driver services, tests, permits and licences online on MyRoadSafety.

If you want to be Driver CPC qualified for either a truck or bus you will need to have passed a case study test

The case study test describes 3 real life situations a driver might face. There will be 15 questions on each.

To pass you have to score at least 5 out of 15 in each situation and have an overall score of at least 28 out of 45.

Where do you need to go?

You can book your case study test at the  Driver Theory Test Website

Your test result

When you finish your theory test you will be given a score report. This will tell you whether you have passed or failed your test.

This information will be passed on by the Driver Theory Test Service to the RSA CPC Section.

If you have passed, you will be given a Driver CPC Case Study Test Certificate

Your case study test certificate is valid for 2 years from when you passed the test.

If you fail your case study test

You’ll get a score report with feedback telling you why you’ve failed.

You can book another case study test straight away, but you can’t take it for another 3 clear working days.

Please contact us directly for more information on dates and times of case study classes.

CPC for new professional lorry, bus and coach drivers

If you want to drive professionally you need an initial Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) qualification. You’ll get a Driver Qualification Card (DQC) when you qualify. You must keep this with you when you’re driving professionally.

The Driver CPC initial qualification

The Driver CPC initial qualification has four parts:

  • part one - theory test (this includes two separate tests - multiple choice and hazard perception)
  • part two - case study test
  • part three - driving ability test
  • part four - practical demonstration test

You must pass all four parts to get your Driver CPC.

Book the theory test and case study test

You can book parts one and two online. When you book using this service, you only pay the cost of the test – there’s no extra booking fee.

  • Book, change, or cancel your theory test appointment

Book the driving ability test and practical demonstration test

You can also book parts three and four online. You can book online at the link below.

  • Book your practical driving test online

Order you take the tests in

You can take part one and part two in any order. You can also take part three and part four in any order. However, you must pass part one before you can take part three and pass part two before you can take part four.

Taking part one

Part one - you can take the multiple-choice and hazard perception tests in any order, on the same day or on two separate days. Remember, if you are taking both tests on the same day, make sure you leave some time between the two tests.

Receiving your DQC

A DQC will be issued automatically once you have passed the initial qualification. It will be sent to the address on your driving licence, so make sure that your details are up-to-date.

If the address is wrong and you are unable to get the DQC from the address on your licence, you will have to complete a DQC1 application form and apply for a duplicate licence at a cost of £25.

  • Keeping your driving licence up-to-date
  • Driver Qualification Card and Driver CPC

Driver CPC periodic training

You must do 35 hours of periodic training every five years to keep your Driver CPC.

You should not unnecessarily repeat the same periodic training module within a five-year rolling period. A range of different subjects should be covered over the driver’s 35 hours of periodic training. If unnecessary repetition of periodic training occurs, action may be taken against the driver and trainer.

When you don’t need Driver CPC

There are exceptions from the Driver CPC qualification if you drive certain vehicles. You can move in and out of an exemption, depending on the circumstances in which they are driving.

  • Exemptions and Driver CPC fees

CPC Exam Registration

To register for the exam, you must be an AAPC member, which costs $190 ($125 for students). Once you have joined AAPC, you can use your account to register for the exam.

The exam itself costs $349 for one attempt or $449 for two. If you paid to take the test twice but you pass the exam on the first take, you do not get a refund of the money spent on the second attempt.

When you register, you will have the option to choose in-person testing or remote testing (LPR).

There are similarities between these two methods when it comes to the day of the exam. Both formats require a current, valid, government-issued form of identification. Both ways also allow you to bring a basic manual calculator and handwritten notes specific to daily coding activities. Additionally, you are allowed three reference books

  • The AMA Professional edition of the CPT
  • Your choice of the ICD-10-CM Official Guidelines with highlighting, underlining, and brief notations needed for day-to-day coding
  • Your choice of HCPCS Level II

Keep in mind that the exam questions are based on the current calendar year’s code sets, and you might be disadvantaged in using prior publications.

There are similarities in the disallowed items as well. You are not allowed to bring electronic devices with an on/off switch, devices capable of capturing and storing images, study guides, Procedural Coding Expert , CPT Plus! – PMIC , CPT Insider’s View – AMA , or the ICD-10-CM Easy Coder.

In-person Testing

On the day of your exam, you should arrive 15-30 minutes early at your exam location. You must also bring your photo ID, two No. 2 pencils, an eraser, a manual calculator, and your coding books and references. Keep your belongings in your car or at home; you are not allowed to bring anything not approved into the testing center.

After you show your ID to the testing center administrator, you will be directed to your testing station. You will complete a familiarization tutorial there, and your exam begins when you are finished with the tutorial.

You can take breaks during the exam period, but you will not regain the time you lose on your break.

Live Remote Proctoring

You will need to log on to the testing environment 5-10 minutes before your appointment time. By logging on early, you can troubleshoot issues like connecting to the testing platform, microphone issues, lagging internet, etc.

When your proctor signs on, present your government-issued photo ID. Then, rotate your camera around your space for the proctor’s approval. When your area is approved, replace your webcam, ensuring your face, fingers, keyboard, and keyboard area are always in the frame. Once the webcam is back in place, you cannot move out of its view.

A bottle of water, two No. 2 pencils, an eraser, a sheet of blank paper, approved reference materials, and a manual calculator are all allowed to be on your desk.

How the CPC Exam is Scored

You need to answer 70 questions correctly to pass the exam. The correct answers are worth 1 point each, and they are combined to calculate your final score. Your results are released to your AAPC account seven to ten days after you take the exam. If you do not receive your test results after ten days, contact AAPC for guidance.

If you did not pass the exam, you can register to retake the exam. If you paid for the two-test bundle, there is no additional fee. If you did not pay for the two-test bundle, you would pay the $349 test registration fee.

You can take the exam as often as needed, but you will pay the full registration fee each time.

How to Study for the CPC Exam

How to study effectively.

Your success on CPC test day depends not only on how many hours you put into preparing but also on whether you prepared the right way. It’s good to check along the way to see whether your studying is paying off. One of the most effective ways to do this is by taking CPC practice tests to evaluate your progress. Practice tests are useful because they show exactly where you need to improve. Every time you take a free CPC exam practice test, pay special attention to these three groups of questions:

  • The questions you got wrong
  • The ones you had to guess on, even if you guessed right
  • The ones you found difficult or slow to work through

This will show you exactly what your weak areas are and where you need to devote more study time. Ask yourself why each of these questions gave you trouble. Was it because you didn’t understand the material? Was it because you didn’t remember the vocabulary? Do you need more repetitions on this type of question to build speed and confidence? Dig into those questions and figure out how you can strengthen your weak areas as you go back to review the material.

Answer Explanations

Additionally, many CPC practice tests have a section explaining the answer choices. It can be tempting to read the explanation and think that you now have a good understanding of the concept. However, an explanation likely only covers part of the question’s broader context. Even if the explanation makes sense, go back and investigate every concept related to the question until you’re positive you have a thorough understanding.

Comprehend Each Topic

As you go along, keep in mind that the CPC practice test is just that: practice. Memorizing these questions and answers will not be very helpful on the actual test because it is unlikely to have any of the same exact questions. If you only know the right answers to the sample questions, you won’t be prepared for the real thing. Study the concepts until you understand them fully, and then you’ll be able to answer any question that shows up on the test.

Strategy for CPC Practice

When you’re ready to start taking practice tests, follow this strategy:

  • Remove Limitations. Take the first test with no time constraints and with your notes and CPC study guide handy. Take your time and focus on applying the strategies you’ve learned.
  • Time Yourself. Take the second practice test “open book” as well, but set a timer and practice pacing yourself to finish in time.
  • Simulate Test Day. Take any other practice tests as if it were test day. Set a timer and put away your study materials. Sit at a table or desk in a quiet room, imagine yourself at the testing center, and answer questions as quickly and accurately as possible.
  • Keep Practicing. Keep taking practice tests on a regular basis until you run out of practice tests or it’s time for the actual test. Your mind will be ready for the schedule and stress of test day, and you’ll be able to focus on recalling the material you’ve learned.

How long is the CPC exam?

The time limit for the exam is 4 hours.

How many questions are on the CPC exam?

There are 100 questions on the exam.

What is a passing score for the CPC exam?

To pass the exam, you will need to answer at least 70 questions correctly.

How much does the CPC exam cost?

The exam costs $349.
