Remember, finding scholarship opportunities is only half of the task involved in earning funds for your education. Once you’ve found some good fits from our list, it’s time to start applying. Before you begin your applications, sit down and do some reflection to decide what approach you’ll take. Ask yourselves some questions and write down the answers with no regard to grammar, word limits, or anything like that; just get them out on the page to pull from as you begin to write. Here are a few questions you might ask:

• When did I first become interested in medicine?
• What change do I hope to make in the world through my career as a doctor?
• When have I demonstrated skills that indicate my potential as a future doctor?
• Where do I see myself in 10 years?

You can also try asking these questions to your friends, family, and other trusted adults. Oftentimes, they have some insight into your past accomplishments that you wouldn’t have otherwise thought of.

Need-based financial aid for medical school

Medical school students can also apply for need based financial aid to pay for their M.D. There are two main applications that students should know about when thinking about need-based financial aid:

• FAFSA or Free Application for Federal Student Aid is how financial aid from the federal government is awarded, which includes federal student loans.
• CSS Profile is a financial aid application offered by the College Board. The CSS Profile is how some medical schools will award institutional financial aid, which can include grants, scholarships, and student loans. Yale School of Medicine is one medical school that uses the CSS Profile for both scholarships and Yale student loans.

Students who need even more financial aid can consider private student loans . Remember, these private loans should be a last resort as they may have higher interest rates and less flexible repayment options than loans from the federal government.

Can doctors qualify for Public Service Loan Forgiveness?

Doctors who work in a non-profit or public sector and make regular loan payments for ten years should be eligible for Public Service Loan Forgiveness . This would mean that any remaining federal loan balance after those ten years would be forgiven; they would never have to repay it.

It’s worth noting that PSLF has a notoriously strict set of rules for eligibility, so if you plan to take advantage of the program, be sure to educate yourself on all of the stipulations to ensure that you fulfill them.

Can you use the Pell Grant to pay for medical school?

Only undergraduate students are eligible for the Pell Grant , so although you can use it to pay for a pre-med education, you won’t be able to use it for med school.

Financial Aid

Md/mdphd scholarships, the warren alpert medical school scholarship funds.

The Warren Alpert Medical School is deeply grateful to the thousands of donors who offer generous scholarship support to our medical students. Through a combination of endowment income, annual gifts, a percentage of tuition revenue, and grants from the federal government, AMS was able to offer over $6 million dollars in institutional scholarship funds to 50% of all aid recipients. The average scholarship award in 2018-19 year was approximately $33,730.

Institutional Need-Based Scholarships

The financial aid office awards scholarships from the institution to students on the basis of financial need. A student may be considered for this type of scholarship by applying as an institutional aid applicant. Please review the application page for details about applying for institutional need-based scholarship funding.

Institutional Merit-Based Scholarships

Tuition scholarships are awarded to AMS MD/PhD students that are not based on need. In addition, the Office of Admission offers merit scholarships based on criteria other than need. All other financial aid at The Warren Alpert Medical School is awarded on the basis of financial need.

This directory includes a variety of international grants and fellowships in biomedical and behavioral research. It provides information about additional funding opportunities available to those in the field of global health research.

This program provides opportunities for physician-in-training scholars during their residency and career physician scholars for 6-week rotations overseas. Program sites vary. In previous years they were in Eritrea, Honduras, South Africa, Uganda, and Vietnam.

The Commonwealth Fund Mongan Fellowship Program in Minority Health Policy is a one-year, full-time program designed to create physician-leaders who will pursue careers in minority health and health policy.

Association of Schools Programs of Public Health (ASPPH)/Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Allan Rosenfield Global Health Fellowship

This fellowship program provides international training opportunities for recent graduates of ASPPH member accredited schools of public health (Master of Public Health and Doctoral level).

GHFP Fellows are recruited for specific positions, working two to four years full time, gaining experience and expertise in global health development. Placements are made both in Washington, DC, and in developing countries.

International Travel Scholarships

Students and resident physician members of the MMS are eligible to apply for grants up to $2,000 to defray the costs of study in another country. The MMS will donate sufficient funds to the Foundation to underwrite five grants annually, although future provisions may be made to invite private or corporate donations to expand the size and/or number of grants. 

Up to $250 of funding is available for current medical student members of the MMS whose projects meet objectives in community and social service, public health activism, and education, or volunteer mentorship activities.

The AMWA provides grants up to $1,000 for assistance with transportation costs (airfare, train fare, etc.) connected with pursuing medical studies in an off-campus setting where the medically-neglected benefit.

This award provides round trip airfare and up to $1,000 toward living expenses for medical students proposing electives in clinical tropical medicine with at least one month at a site endemic for tropical communicable diseases.

The Adell & Hancock Fund Scholarships provide supplemental support to U.S. and international students who are in need of additional funds to carry out their international educational plans.

Sara’s Wish offers scholarships for extraordinary young women committed to making the world a better place by defraying the costs associated with traveling to all areas of the globe.

This award is for outstanding students entering their third year of medical school who have shown leadership in efforts to eliminate inequities in medical education and health care. Awardees will have demonstrated leadership efforts in addressing educational, societal, and health care needs of minorities in the United States.

The Program supports one year of mentored clinical research training at a site in resource-limited resource and transitional countries. It  Aalso provides a stipend for an international graduate student to work alongside the U.S. trainee during the clinical research year.   

Fulbright Sscholarships for offer international exchange opportunities for students, scholars, and professionals to undertake international graduate study, advanced research, university teaching, and teaching in elementary and secondary schools worldwide.

Infectious Diseases Society of America Medical Scholars Program

These Sscholarships are for medical students with mentorship by an Infectious Diseases Society of America IDSA member or fellow. Scholarship activity must focus on pediatric or adult infectious diseases and may involve either clinical or research activities.

Boren Fellowships Pprovide up to $24,000 to U.S. graduate students to add an important international and language component to their graduate education through specialization in area study, language study, or increase language proficiency. 

CIDRZ HealthCorps Fellow Program is for medical, nursing, or Master of Public Health MPH students who are able to delay their studies for a year; recent graduates who wish to gain international experience; and college graduates with substantial skills or experiences to work in Lusaka, Zambia, for a 10- to 12 month duration.

These Sscholarships to cover Child Family Health International programs, which include: Introduction to Traditional Medicine, India; Cultural Crossroads in Health, Oaxaca, Mexico; and Urban & and Rural Comparative Health in Ecuador. 

Chateaubriand Fellowships are for American MD or PhD students to conduct research in a French laboratory for a six 6 to twelve month period.

The Albert Schweitzer Fellowship is for third-year medical students to spend three 3 months working at the Albert Schweitzer Hospital in Lambarene, Gabon, on clinical rotations. 

U.S. Schweitzer Fellows Programs

Community Sservice fellowships are for graduate students in health-related professional fields who are dedicated to addressing unmet health needs in their local areas. 

The David E. Rogers Student Fellowship is meant to enrich the educational experiences of medical and dental students through projects that bear on medicine and dentistry as social enterprises. That is, as enterprises devoted to the capacity of these professions in any and all of their expressions to serve human needs, particularly the needs of underserved or disadvantaged patients or populations.

Medical students may apply for either the research fellowship or the service fellowship, which includes a $4,000 stipend for a 10-week period.

There is no separate application to apply for U-M scholarships and grants. By submitting your FAFSA and UMMS Financial Aid application, we will consider your eligibility for these programs. Your financial situation and your need level is important to us. UMMS practices need-blind admissions, and we work hard to make sure medical school is affordable to all students.

Scholarships range from a few hundred dollars to full tuition and housing. This type of funding does not have to be repaid. Applicants will learn about scholarship opportunities during their Admissions interview.

Dean’s scholarships are awarded to candidates with outstanding potential for leadership in academic medicine. This award offers funding for all four years of medical school plus funding to cover the cost of an additional/dual degree year at a University of Michigan graduate school.

Other types of scholarships, including department- and donor-sponsored, may be awarded based on financial need, demographic factors and/or an excellent evaluation by the Admissions Committee. About one-half of our entering students receive some type of scholarship.

We also offer need-based grant funds. We’ll consider your eligibility for these based on the information you submit on the FAFSA and UMMS Financial Aid application. Need-based grants do not have to be repaid.

You can also search for and apply for scholarships offered beyond the University of Michigan.

The more scholarship dollars you receive, the less you’ll have to borrow in loans, so it’s worth it to explore other ways to fund your medical education beyond what is available at U-M.

The Physicians of Tomorrow Scholarship program distributes $10,000 in tuition assistance scholarships to medical students approaching their final year of school. With 12 scholarship categories and a variety of focus areas, including serving those underrepresented in medicine, the AMA Foundation works to recognize a diverse cohort of medical students each year. All students may apply for the Physicians of Tomorrow scholarships, regardless of AMA membership status.

The Pisacano Leadership Foundation (PLF)  seeks to advance family medicine by providing well-educated, community-minded leaders in primary care. By aiding students who demonstrate the highest levels of commitment to family medicine, scholarship, leadership, character, interpersonal skills, and community service, the PLF will promote the development of the future leaders in the specialty. The program is designed to provide educational programs, leadership training, and funding to reimburse a portion of medical-school-related debt. Scholarships will be awarded to outstanding medical students for a four-year period. Students who have made a commitment to the field of family medicine and who will enter their fourth year in medical school in the fall of 2023 may apply. The PLF will award up to 10 scholarships with a maximum value of $28,000 each for the 2023-2024 academic year.

Society of Hospital Medicine  believes a diverse hospital medicine workforce is important to eliminating health disparities and delivering excellent care for all hospitalized patients. We are proud to announce that SHM’s 2nd annual Hospital Medicine Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Scholarship is now accepting nominations. This scholarship is made possible through the generous support of our Keystone Sponsor, Vituity. SHM will award a $25,000 medical education scholarship to a third-year medical student from an underrepresented group in medicine who has demonstrated an interest in pursuing a career in hospital medicine as well as a commitment to health equity and improving care for underserved communities. Students may self-nominate and apply, or a medical school may nominate one student per year for this award.

The US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) just recently initiated a new program called the  Specialty Education Loan Repayment Program (SELRP) .  SELRP is only available to final year medical students who have  MATCHED  to a residency and physicians in a residency/fellowship program. SELRP will pay a resident  $40,000  for each year while in a residency or fellowship (Maximum 4 years for as total of = $160,000) to apply to the physicians medical school student loan debt. This tax free money cannot be used for any other student loan debt outside of medical school (MD/DO). In return the physician comes to work for the VA in the specialty for which they were trained for a minimum of 2 years (Maximum 4 years).

NMF announced several new and current scholarships  that are open to apply starting today for underrepresented minority medical students who are enrolled in an accredited medical school program. Two scholarships are specific to the state of Michigan and are listed below.

Medical School Scholarships for future and current medical school students, the  Health Professions Scholarship Program (HPSP ) offers two-, three- and four-year military scholarships. The HPSP covers civilian medical school tuition, pays for fees, provides a monthly living stipend and includes a signing bonus under certain conditions. This scholarship is offered by the Army, Navy and Air Force, and the benefits are the same across all three Services. For those who hope to apply to HPSP, selection boards tend to look at all aspects of a person's application — leadership, extracurricular activities, fitness, grades and scores — so they can determine who will succeed in both medical school and the Military.

The OppU Achievers Scholarship  celebrates achievement in its many forms and honors those who create opportunity for themselves and others. Founded in 2016, the scholarship provides $2,500 for current or future education costs. Scholarship selections are made four times a year. Annually, the OppU Achievers Scholarship awards a total of $10,000 to students who have demonstrated outstanding achievement.

The National Health Service Corps (NHSC)  offers a scholarship program for medical students, the Students to Service (S2S) Loan Repayment Program for students in their last year of medical school, federal and state Loan Repayment Programs (LRP), and a new Substance Use Disorder Workforce LRP. All programs are intended to help physicians, or soon to be physicians, with the cost and debt they incur from pursuing a medical career.

A PhD is a postgraduate research degree, usually lasting three or four years, if undertaken full time. It involves independently conducting original and significant research in a specific field and is normally assessed by a written thesis and oral examination.

Student Scholarships in Cardiovascular Disease and Stroke

To qualify for this award, you must meet the following deadlines:

• DEADLINE EXTENDED: April 9, 2024, 6 p.m. (CT) – Deadline to apply for this award in the Council Awards System .
• Applicants will be notified of funding by June 10 via email.

The scientific councils of the American Heart Association (AHA) want to stimulate interest, knowledge and investigative work in students in medicine, nursing, public health, nutrition, and other allied health disciplines. AHA Student Scholarships support students conducting research projects related to cardiovascular disease, cerebrovascular disease, and stroke within basic, clinical, translational or population sciences early during pre-doctoral training, usually during the summer. Projects must be conducted under qualified supervision and each applicant and applicant's preceptor must be members of the AHA at the time of application.

AHA scholarships provide valuable stipends for graduate-level or medical students during the research project. The scholarship stipends may be used for student expenses, lab fees, or other costs incurred by the student during the project.

According to IRS guidelines , scholarships given for research work are considered taxable income. Applicants should consult a tax advisor and/or their university if they have questions.

Student Scholarships in Cardiovascular Disease

Sponsored by Multiple AHA Scientific Councils

$2,000 scholarships, paid to the institution of the selected student, will be available for students researching cardiovascular disease topics within basic, clinical, translational or population sciences.

Student Scholarships in Cerebrovascular Disease and Stroke

Sponsored by the Stroke Council

$2,000 scholarships, paid to the institution of the selected student, will be available for students specifically researching cerebrovascular disease and stroke. Scholarship recipients may also be eligible to receive a $750 travel grant pending verification of their attendance at the International Stroke Conference (ISC) and an accepted, a co-authored abstract for the current year's conference.

Student Scholarship in Cardiovascular Surgery

Sponsored by the Council on Cardiovascular Surgery and Anesthesia (CVSA)

$2,000 scholarships, paid to the institution of the selected student, will be available for students specifically researching cardiac surgery, vascular surgery, or cardiovascular anesthesia. Scholarship recipients may also be eligible to receive a $750 travel grant pending verification of their attendance at Scientific Sessions in November. If attending Scientific Sessions, they will be invited to attend the CVSA leadership meeting to report their experience. Awardees will also receive a complimentary ticket to the CVSA Annual Business Meeting (Council Dinner) and a 1-year complimentary AHA Student/Trainee member account.

Eligibility

Eligible applicants include students in medical schools or in master's or equivalent programs in an accredited school in the United States where research training in cardiovascular disease and stroke is available.

MD/PhD and PhDs are ineligible unless the PhD was obtained previously in an area not related to basic sciences.

Each applicant and applicant's preceptor must be members of the AHA at the time of application.

The awards will be made to institutions within the United States in which the research training is available to students under qualified supervision. If the student conducts the research at a location other than his/her home institution, he/she must have written approval of his/her dean or other responsible individual.

Time Period

The typical applicant for these scholarships will be conducting research over the summers.

The award will be considered for students to work on a project or projects over the summer or in a block of several months not to exceed May 30 of the following calendar year .

Selection of Institution/Students

A committee of representatives of the American Heart Association scientific councils will select institutions based on the quality of a proposal, supporting supervision and the student’s academic achievement.

As many as five students from a single school within an institution may be considered for the scholarship; however, the scholarship committee reserves the right to fund only one applicant per institution each year. No student may receive an award more than once.

The institution in which the student is enrolled must appoint a preceptor to guide the student during the scholarship period. All scholarships are awarded with the understanding that the preceptor will accept full responsibility for the program, its supervision, and the completion of formal reports. If the student conducts the research at a location other than his/her home institution, he/she must have written approval of his/her dean or other responsible individual.

A $2,000 scholarship will be awarded to the student’s institution in one payment upon receipt of the signed acceptance agreement and required financial forms at the AHA National Center. The entire amount must be used as a stipend for the selected student during the scholarship period.

Additionally:

• The top recipient of the Student Scholarships in Cardiovascular Disease and Stroke will be designated the Howard S. Silverman Scholar. Dr. Silverman, despite severe heart problems, maintained a positive outlook, an active research program, and often served as mentor to medical students, residents, and cardiology fellows. The Howard S. Silverman Scholar will receive an additional $1,000 stipend.

A $2,000 scholarship will be awarded to the institution in one payment upon receipt of the signed acceptance agreement and required financial forms at the AHA/ASA National Center. The entire amount must be used as a stipend for the selected student.

• The preceptor and recipient of a Student Scholarship in Cerebrovascular Disease and Stroke are encouraged to submit a co-authored abstract through the International Stroke Conference  abstract submission site, which typically opens in May. The abstract must be submitted in accordance with the AHA/ASA abstract submission guidelines as outlined on the conference website. Scholarship recipients who are eligible for the ISC travel grant should send an email with proof of ISC registration and abstract acceptance by December 15.
• A $750 travel stipend to attend and present at the AHA/ASA International Stroke Conference will be paid to recipients of the Student Scholarships in Cerebrovascular Disease and Stroke upon verification of an abstract accepted to the AHA/ASA International Stroke Conference, pending verification of their attendance and submission of eligible receipts after the conference.

The institution will receive a $2,000 scholarship to be used as a stipend for the selected student upon receipt of the signed acceptance agreement and required financial forms at the AHA/ASA National Center. Selected students will receive a 1-year complimentary AHA student/trainee account.

A $750 travel stipend to attend the AHA  Scientific Sessions  in November will be paid to recipients of the Student Scholarships in Cardiovascular Surgery, pending verification of their attendance and submission of eligible receipts after the conference. Scholarship recipients who are eligible for the travel grant should send an email with proof of Scientific Sessions registration by August 15. Awardees will be invited to attend the Council on Cardiovascular Surgery and Anesthesia (CVSA) annual leadership meeting to report their experience. Awardees will also receive a complimentary ticket to the CVSA Annual Business Meeting (Council Dinner).

Scholarship Program Evaluation

The preceptor and student scholar must agree to allow the AHA/ASA to contact him/her in the future to evaluate the effectiveness of the Student Scholarship Programs.

How to Apply/Required Documents

Electronic submission through the Council Awards Application System is required. Hard copies of any part of the application cannot be accepted.

A student may only apply for one of the three scholarship programs and should choose the program that is most relevant to his or her research.

Your application file should contain the following documents in electronic format:

• Student Scholar Statement: The applicant must provide a thorough statement (minimum three pages, double-spaced) describing the purpose of the research project, the implications of the project, and what the student hopes to accomplish or discover during the research period. The statement must also include a list of relevant classes taken and current grade point average if GPA is used at the institution.
• A description of the proposed research program, including the facilities and personnel to be involved
• A description of his or her responsibilities towards the student’s training, and other academic and administrative responsibilities
• The duties and responsibilities of the student, the total duration and dates of the training period, and the specific education and training that will be provided
• A listing of the preceptor’s research funding active during the proposed training period
• A list of his/her trainees and project titles for the past five years
• A description of the student selection process
• Agreement (if selected) to accept responsibility for supervision of the project and to pay the entire scholarship amount to the Student Scholar as a stipend via his/her institution.
• Any other supportive or referential information on behalf of the student
• Student and preceptor curriculum vitae and bibliography: The applicant and preceptor must each provide an up-to-date curriculum vitae with full bibliography (if bibliography is applicable).

Up to three additional recommendation letters outside of the preceptor’s statement may be submitted in the file and are optional.

• Reference letters should be from individuals familiar with the applicant's scientific interests, academic interests, and performance, research abilities, or a combination of these. The referee should address as many of these areas as possible regarding the student. The reference letter should not exceed one page.
• Reference letters must be written on letterhead, and each letter should include the referee’s signature.
• Reference letters will not be accepted via postal mail or electronically separate from the application file. Any letters must be uploaded to the Council Awards Application System within the application file to be considered.

An active AHA Professional Membership is required of all applicants and their preceptors for this award. If you are joining the AHA to apply, please wait for your AHA member number to arrive from AHA Member Services via e-mail before creating an online profile at  Professional Heart Daily  and starting your application file. We suggest that new members  join the AHA  no later than one week prior to the application submission deadline for the member ID number to be processed and delivered in time for the application deadline. Baltimore City Medical Society Foundation

The Baltimore City Medical Society Foundation was established by the members of the Baltimore City Medical Society in 1972 to support the philanthropic activities in Baltimore City and to provide scholarships to medical students who have Baltimore City as their permanent residence. Applicants must have completed at least one year at an accredited U.S. medical school. Persons qualifying for this scholarship must have lived in Baltimore City for a minimum of three years while attending high school.

The Baltimore City Medical Society Foundation also offers The North Charles/Wyman Park Medical Staff Scholarship. This scholarship is available to medical students with a permanent address in Maryland who have completed at least one year at the Johns Hopkins University SOM. Persons qualifying for this scholarship must have lived in Maryland for a minimum of three years while attending high school.

Chinese American Physicians Society

The Chinese American Physicians' Society (CAPS) was formed by a group of concerned physicians of Chinese descent in 1977 in the San Francisco area.  Our current membership consists of various ethnic groups and races.  CAPS is offering scholarship(s) to students in United States medical schools.  These scholarships are open to all medical students in need of financial aid regardless of their hometown, sex, race, or color.  Applicants are judged according to their academic achievements, financial needs, community service records and essays.  Special credit is also given to those who are willing to serve the Chinese communities after their graduation. 

Edward T. Conroy Memorial Scholarship Program

The Edward T. Conroy Memorial Scholarship Program provides financial aid to: sons and daughters of members of the United States armed forces who died as a result of military service or who suffered a service connected 100% disability as a result of military service; a veteran who suffers a service connected disability..; POW/MIA's of the Vietnam Conflict and their sons and daughters; sons and daughters and surviving spouses of victims of the September 11, 2001 terrorists attacks; sons, daughters and surviving spouses of State or local public safety employees or volunteers who died in the line of duty or who sustained an injury in the line of duty that rendered the public safety employee or volunteer 100% disabled; or, state or local public service employees or volunteers who became 100 percent disabled in the line of duty.

Herbert W. Nickens Medical Student Scholarships

The Herbert W. Nickens Medical Student Scholarships consist of five scholarships given to outstanding students entering their third year of medical school who have shown leadership in efforts to eliminate inequities in medical education and healthcare. Each recipient receives a $5,000 scholarship in November of the year the scholarships are awarded. A medical school may nominate one student per year. Open to entering third year medical students. Students in combined MD/PhD programs are eligible when they are entering their third year of medical school.

The Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago Academic Scholarship Program

Educational scholarship funds from the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago are available for college and graduate students. Approximately $500,000 is available for Jewish students who are identifies as having promise for significant contributions in their chosen careers, and are in need of financial assistance for full-time academic programs primarily in the helping professions, such as medicine and human services, etc.

Joan F. Giambalvo Memorial Scholarship

The AMA Foundation, in partnership with the AMA Women Physicians Congress (WPC), announces the Joan F. Giambalvo Memorial Scholarship program .  This research scholarship will be awarded to a medical student, health professional, or graduate student to study the issues generated by and affecting women in medicine.  This program seeks to advance the progress of women in the medical profession, and to strengthen the ability to identify and address the needs and interests of women physicians and medical students.

Joseph Collins Foundation

Applicants to submit all application materials to the Financial Aid Office by mid-February. Financial Aid office submission to Foundation- March 1 st

The Joseph Collins Foundation was established with the purpose of aiding needy medical students to achieve an adequate education without sacrificing all other interests in the broad fields of learning. The maximum award for an individual student is $15,000. To qualify, students must be a student attending an accredited medical school geographically located east of or contiguous to the Mississippi River. Students must stand in the upper half of their class; demonstrate an interest in the arts or other cultural pursuits outside of medicine; have an interest in specializing in neurology, psychiatry, or becoming a general practitioner and be of good moral character. All application materials   must be typewritten .

Kaiser Permanente Medical Student Scholarships

Six $5,000 scholarships will be offered to fourth year medical students selected for their commitment to and achievement in at least one of two areas: Commitment to underserved communities. Applicants must be a third year medical student in good academic standing who expects to graduate in the spring of the following year and interested in seeking residency in Northern California. Scholarship recipients will be encouraged to participate in a one-month clerkship at a Kaiser Permanente facility in Northern California during their fourth year of medical school.

Maryland Graduate and Professional Scholarship

Applicants to the Maryland Graduate and Professional Scholarship must be full-time medical students at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine that are United States citizens whose permanent state of residence is Maryland. A completed Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) must be on file at time of application to be considered. All materials must be submitted to the Financial Aid Office by the deadline listed above.

National Health Service Corps Scholarship and Loan Repayment Program

Eligibility is open to medical students (allopathic or osteopathic) in their final year of a U.S. accredited school who are planning to pursue a career in primary care, and are committed to working in underserved communities with limited access to care. Students to Service loan repayment award recipients receive up to $120,000 (tax free) for three years of full-time service or six years of half-time service. Upon completion of residency, recipients serve as primary care providers in an NHSC-approved site in a Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA) of greatest need. National Institutes of Health Loan Repayment Programs

The National Institutes of Health’s Loan Repayment Programs repay the outstanding student loans of researchers who are or will be conducting nonprofit biomedical or behavioral research. Opportunities are available in five research areas—clinical, pediatric, health disparities, contraception and infertility and clinical research for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds. National Medical Fellowships, Inc Need-Based Scholarship Program

National Medical Fellowships, Inc. , is a non-profit organization founded in 1946 dedicated to increasing the number of underrepresented minority physicians in the United States by providing financial support and other incentives to underrepresented minority medical students.

P.E.O. Foundation Scholar Awards

Open to women who are U.S. or Canadian citizens. Applicants must be nominated by a local P.E.O. Chapter and must be pursuing a doctoral level degree or postdoctoral research at an accredited college, university or institution and have one full year of academic work remaining.

Pisacano Scholars Leadership Program

The Pisacano Scholars Leadership Program provides educational programs, leadership training, and funding to outstanding fourth-year medical students for a four-year period. Students must make a commitment to the specialty of family medicine. The funding program is designed to reimburse a portion of medical school debt incurred by the student by the conclusion of the required three-year residency. The Foundation is especially interested in students who exhibit the highest levels of skill, compassion, and leadership.

Ruth G. White P.E.O Scholarship Fund (P.E.O. Foundation)

Due: February 1 The Ruth G. White P.E.O. Scholarship Fund was established in the memory of Ruth Garten White, MD, past president of California State Chapter of the P.E.O. Sisterhood. Dr. White served on the executive board of the International Chapter until ill health forced her resignation. After her death in 1957, a trust was set up as a living memorial to her service and devotion to P.E.O. and to promote educational opportunities for women. An applicant must be a female California resident studying in the United States and enrolled in studies in the broad field of medicine and have completed her first year of graduate work in her field before applying. Applications will be sent only upon written or email request by the prospective applicant.

Vietnamese American Medical Association

The Vietnamese American Medical Association (VAMA), now in its eleventh year, is offering a scholarship which is open to all third year medical students who are in good standing at an accredited U.S. medical school. The scholarship amount is $1,000. To qualify applicants must be enrolled as a third year medical student in an accredited U.S. medical school, have financial aid offered by the school he/she is attending and demonstrate a strong interest in serving the Vietnamese communities in the U.S. when he/she completes training.

Waterbury Medical Association

The Wellsford and Mildred Clark Medical Memorial Scholarship was established in 1988 to provide scholarships for third-year medical school students entering their fourth year of medical school. The scholarship requires that applicants be residents of Connecticut for five years and currently enrolled in a not-for-profit medical school accredited by the AMA and/or the World Health Organization. Worcester District Medical Society

The Worcester District Medical Society offers a scholarship open to 2nd, 3rd, and 4th year medical students attending an accredited medical or osteopathic school. Awards are based on scholastic achievement, financial need and community service. The applicant must be a legal resident of Central Massachusetts.

Windham County Medical Association

Each year the Executive Board of the Windham County Medical Association allocates a portion of their annual operating budget for scholarships to individuals who are from the county and are in their second or third year of medical school. Candidates applying for this scholarship must be enrolled in a U.S. or Canadian Medical School and have a permanent residence in Windham County, Connecticut. Zonta Club of Washington, DC - Edith Seville Coale, MD Medical Scholarship

The Edith SeVille Coale Medical Scholarship is open to female medical students who will be entering their second or third year of medical school. The Scholarship was established to enable "qualified women students attend an accredited medical college or university, to earn a degree of Doctor of Medicine for the practice of medicine, surgery or medical research."

Reasons for Completing Medical School in Five Years

Some students are taking an extra year when earning their M.D. Here's why.

Students might want to add an extra year of medical school for personal exploration or to gain a competitive edge for residency after they graduate.

For someone considering becoming a doctor, the road ahead may look long. After finishing an undergraduate degree, there’s four years of medical school and then three to seven years to complete a residency. Aspiring subspecialists might follow that up with a fellowship.

It can all add up to a decade or more of advanced study before a new physician even interviews for their first job.

But for various reasons, many medical school students are opting to take another year – or even two – to complete their education, administrators say.

Dr. Michael Kim, an assistant professor of medicine and pediatrics at the University of Minnesota Medical School , recommends that students use early meetings with their academic adviser to explore their goals and passions. What sort of medicine do they want to practice? Do they have interests outside of medicine that they want to pursue? At this early stage, the idea of using an extra year to add outside experiences might come up.

Traditionally, med school entails two years of full-time coursework followed by two years of clinical clerkship, or rotation, in a university hospital. Since the first two years are spent in class, Kim and other experts say the best time to add an extra year isn’t at the end, but in the middle after the second year. This way, coursework is finished but the intense schedule of clinical rotation hasn't begun.

Students considering taking a longer track should think carefully before making that decision, experts say, but here are some of the reasons it may be worth it.

Pursue Other Interests or Earn a Dual Degree

Some students take extra time to pursue career-enhancing experiences outside medical school or work toward a dual degree . The University of Minnesota offers a flexible M.D. program for students interested in this approach. They can take a pause from med school to pursue other interests or take courses toward a dual degree.

Students interested in global health , for example, can work on research in one of eleven rotation sites that the university partners with, Kim says. Students can also earn graduate degrees in other subjects, like business or law. These programs typically are modified to be shorter than they would be for students who are not in medical school, so they can be completed in one year, Kim says.

Whichever path students choose, he says, the university wants to encourage them to broaden their experience and skills. “There is a lot that a physician can do to improve health that isn’t direct patient care. If they come in with medical legal expertise or have done other research to expand medical knowledge, they can contribute to public health and communities.”

Dr. Vineet Arora, dean for medical education at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine , received her master’s in health policy while doing her residency at the university. Having clinical experience added to what she could bring to health policy classes, and vice versa.

“I was in class with students who didn’t have med expertise,” she says. “I got a lot out of that experience because I could apply what I was learning directly to patients.”

Gain a Competitive Edge for Residency

Arora says she is seeing “an explosion” of interest in adding an extra year to medical school. For many students, she says, the decision is a strategic move to improve their chances during “the match,” when medical school graduates find out where they’ll be doing their residencies .

Medical residencies, required after medical school, are more competitive than ever, Arora says. And many are asking applicants whether they have published research papers.

“Some students think about taking an extra year to do research for a competitive edge during the match,” but that's a gamble, she says. “My personal belief is that you’re unlikely to get a publication off of just one year of research.”

So, it’s crucial to work closely with a career adviser to make sure it’s the right move, she says. An adviser — usually on the student affairs team, a dean or a faculty member —   can direct you toward research opportunities with stipends. Recent graduates can also be a great source of advice about research opportunities.

“ But there is a risk if you’re not able to present why you did it or show much for it,” Arora says.

Personal Exploration

Another reason med students might add an extra year is for personal exploration. Some students decide that before they head into the intensity of clinical rotation and residencies, they want to have that adventure they’ve been dreaming about. Other students might want to delay their graduation so that it aligns with their romantic partner’s education timeline.

A little-known side benefit of taking five years or more to finish medical school is that you are more likely to finish and graduate. Graduation rates for med students who take five years are significantly higher than those who take just four, according to a 2023 report by the Association of American Medical Colleges.

The only big drawback to spending an extra year in medical school is financial , Kim says. Adding more time in school may mean more student loans and more accrued interest on them. The average debt for medical school graduates is more than $200,000, according to the Education Data Initiative, so it’s important to think about the financial impact of adding a year.

A related downside is that you lose a year of earning a practicing physician's salary.

But it's a personal decision, Arora says.

“There’s no one right way to finish medical school. Everyone has a different set of things they’re balancing in the back of their minds.”

Edward C. Dolbey Graduate and Undergraduate Scholarships

The American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science Education and Research Fund (E&R Fund) and the honorary  Alpha Mu Tau Fraternity  (AMTF) provide  undergraduate scholarships for students enrolled in Clinical/Medical Laboratory Science, Clinical/Medical Laboratory Technician, Histotechnology, or Cytotechnology programs.

The E&R Fund also provides  graduate  student scholarships. E&R Fund scholarships are supported by member and industry contributions and bequests, by the Edward C. Dolbey Trust, and by the proceeds of a  silent auction  held at the ASCLS annual meeting. Annually 20–25 undergraduate and graduate scholarships are awarded, depending on contribution levels and market conditions.

Presentation

Each undergraduate Dolbey scholarship winner is awarded up to  $2,500  for  MLS  and up to $2,000 for  MLT  and each graduate Dolbey scholarship winner up to  $3000 . Recipients are notified by email and are honored at the ASCLS Annual Meeting Awards Ceremony. AMTF scholarship winners are also honored at the AMTF dinner held during the Annual Meeting.

Eligibility for E&R Fund and AMTF Scholarships

• • Scholarship applicants must be a member of ASCLS.
• • Citizen or permanent resident of the United States.
• • Undergraduate applicants may apply during their final year.
• • Undergraduate applicants must be enrolled in a NAACLS accredited program.
• • Graduate applicants (E&R Fund) must be accepted into or enrolled in an approved Masters or Doctoral program in areas related to Clinical/Medical Laboratory Science including Clinical Laboratory Education or Management.
• • Graduate applicants cannot complete their education before the scholarship is awarded.

Healthcare Workers for Our Future Scholarship

The “Healthcare Workers for Our Future” Scholarship provides a two-year scholarship to approximately 500 selected recipients covering tuition, room and board, and other related expenses in an approved program of study at any  approved  New York state public or private college or university (not to exceed the average cost of attendance at a state-operated SUNY or the winner’s actual cost of attendance, whichever is less) in approved fields of study (see site for approved fields).
