Vanitas no Karte follows Noé Archiviste, a young man who is traveling aboard an airship in 19th century Paris with one goal in mind: to find the Book of Vanitas. A sudden vampire attack leads him to meet the enigmatic Vanitas, a doctor who specializes in vampires and, much to Noé’s surprise, an entirely ordinary human. The mysterious doctor has inherited both the name and the infamous text from the Vanitas of legend, using the grimoire to heal his patients. But behind his kind demeanor lies something a bit more sinister…

The Case Study of Vanitas Manga Unveils Volume 11 Cover

The Case Study of Vanitas (Vanitas no Carte) series revealed the cover illustration for Volume 11 of the manga, which is set to release on April 22, 2024. The regular edition features an illustration of Vanitas holding a plate of Tarte Tatin with Noe and Murr behind him. Meanwhile, the special edition features the “Archiviste girl” with Noe at the back. The manga series is written and illustrated by Jun Mochizuki.

As described by Square Enix , the plot of the 11th manga volume of The Case Study of Vanitas is as follows (spoilers ahead): “Another “fang that reveals blood.” After the fierce battle that Mikhail set up, Vanitas and his friends take a moment to rest. Behind the scenes, Count Saint-Germain approaches the Archiviste girl —This is a “story.” The promised hope and despair of vampires, humans, and half-breeds are set in motion once again. Volume 11 of a steampunk fantasy woven by human and vampire buddies that unravels memories.”

Editing to give a canon appropriate unhinged review: Again, this was made for people who didn't read that manga. People got swept under the rug. Where's Antoine? Oh wait. He doesn't exist. Number 70? Never heard of them. These people don't exist anymore. Number 70 may not be important, but Antoine was. Do we need to see Veronica talk about her and Machina? In the words of Domi: "I don't want to hear my sister talk about her weird sex life." So no. But we need that moment for Antoine. It shows Domi's self esteem issues. And speaking of removing characters, what happened to Machina in Chloe's backstory? He was in a giant bear costume. It was a funny element in such a serious backstory. But what does Machina matter when Chloe and JJ have their backstory served to us like three day old leftovers with everything good picked off? Oh but thank goodness Astolfo got a backstory. I watched the second part of this series directly after the first, so a lot of the feelings I had initially were carried over. I felt the first half of this one did not fit with the initial plot establised in the first part/season. It was interesting, yes, but felt too long and disconnected, ignoring a lot of what was established in the first season. It was also broken up with many flash back episodes of characters that didn't necesarily add to the plot especially when they are repeated in other episodes. The second half fit much better and was more vital to the character's development and their journey and gave the season/part a bit of tention to build a decent conclusion. It also showed more of the bond that was forming between Vanitas and Noe, which was nice. In all honesty, the first half of season one and the second half of eason two would have made a more enjoyable single season, though it would have deviated quite a bit from the series which I feel would have angered many of the manga's fans but would have also opened the anime to more specials. 

Usually I would write a more detailed review, but I'm too lazy and tired at the moment, though I may update this at another time.  I just finished Part II and it was pure gold ahhhh. I enjoyed this season immensely (a lot more than the first, and I loved the first, so this says a lot), can't wait for the next part. Great character development, insane backstories, a plot that reels you in to the point that most episodes feel like they are 5 min long instead of 20 something min. I especially like how Case Study of Vanitas combines dark, serious topics and emotional backstories with light-hearted humor, causing you to feel like you're dying inside one moment but then smiling and laughing the next. Few animes could ever do this to me so easily lol. Though the OP and ED songs were not as wonderful as S1's were, they were still great. I really enjoyed listening to them and the rest of the music in the series fit so well. Yuki Kajiura's compositions never cease to amaze.  I highly recommend the Case Study of Vanitas, folks, you will not be disappointed. And, no, I don't care whether or not it follows the manga or leaves out characters, I judge animes by their individual content and not by how well it copies the manga's source material. This applies to how I judge book to film/TV adaptations as well.  - Xen

News The Case Study of Vanitas Manga Takes 2-Month Break

The manga went on hiatus in June 2022, and resumed in May 2023.

Yen Press has been publishing the manga simultaneously in English since its debut, and it describes the first volume:

Rumors revolving around The Book of Vanitas, a clockwork grimoire of dubious reputation, draw Noé, a young vampire in search of a friend's salvation, to Paris. What awaits him in the City of Flowers, however, is not long hours treading the pavement or rifling through dusty bookshops in search of the tome. Instead, his quarry comes to him...in the arms of a man claiming to be a vampire doctor! Thrust into a conflict that threatens the peace between humans and vampires, will Noé cast in his lot with the curious and slightly unbalanced Vanitas and his quest to save vampirekind?

Mochizuki ( Pandora Hearts , Crimson-Shell ) launched the manga in Gangan Joker in December 2015. Square Enix published the 11th volume on April 22.

BONES ' television anime of the manga premiered in July 2021. The anime's second part premiered in January 2022. Funimation streamed the first part, and it also streamed an English dub. Both Funimation and Crunchyroll streamed the second part as it aired, and Crunchyroll also added the first part.
