Headteacher's Welcome

city college norwich alternative education

Include Norfolk school is a specialist independent provision for learners aged 14 to 16-years-old whose needs cannot be met within a mainstream environment. All students are fully supported.

A strong wrap-around approach at the schools enables learners to build their confidence, overcome barriers to learning and progress to a positive next step in their lives.

Our high-quality, professional staff bring out the best in all learners through a personalised approach, enabling them to achieve beyond their expectations. Time with us can significantly improve a young person’s chances in life due to our mixture of high-quality teaching and nurturing.

We believe that all young people have the ability to succeed and make the most of the next stages of their lives. We promote key life skills so that they have the confidence and tools to thrive as learners and citizens.

Who are we:

We are an independent school which caters for year 9, 10 and 11 pupils who have had difficulties fitting in at mainstream school. Many of our pupils have social, emotional, and/or mental health issues they need support with.

What we do:

We ensure that our curriculum is meaningful and relevant to enable our pupils to re-engage with education in an environment that is understanding and supportive. We aim for our pupils to leave us with 5 or more level 2 qualifications so they can assess and achieve in a post 16 placement. Many of our leavers move on to City College Norwich (CCN) and the College of West Anglia (CoWA). We also offer vocational placements for pupils who wish to acquire meaningful skills.

How we do it:

Staff at Include are skilled in building and maintaining positive relationships, supporting our pupils to raise self-esteem, belief, and confidence. We celebrate every positive step and success no matter how small it may seem. Our staff take a trauma informed and attachment aware approach, so we understand each individual pupil at our school. Every day is a new start, a new opportunity to achieve. We have a full-time counsellor and dedicated pastoral staff so our pupils always have the right help and support in and out of the classroom. We help with emotional regulation, careers guidance, kindness to others, a positive attitude to learning and attending school.

We believe that every young person deserves the right education. We offer the right place for our pupils to access meaningful qualifications and life skills. We are here to ensure that out pupils can access positive outcomes when they leave us. We are here to help our pupils lead full and happy lives.

How Do We Calculate Rankings?

Our school rankings are meticulously determined through a rigorous process:

  • Factor Selection: We choose relevant factors for the ranking, balancing statistical accuracy and practical relevance.
  • Data Evaluation: We assess data quality, ensuring it distinguishes schools and is accurate. Bayesian methods are used for user-generated data
  • Standardized Scores: Factors are converted into standardized scores (z-scores) for fair comparison among schools.
  • Weight Assignment: We assign weights to factors, preventing any single factor from overly influencing rankings. We consider user preferences and industry research.
  • Overall Score: Each school's overall score is calculated by applying weights to individual factor scores.
  • Data Completeness: Schools missing over 50% of data are excluded. Those with at least 50% data but lacking required factors get a grade but not a numerical ranking. Eligible schools have all factors and 500+ full-time undergraduates.
  • Ranking and Grades: Qualified schools are numerically ranked based on z-scores. Grades are assigned using the ordered z-scores, following a standard distribution.

This meticulous process ensures our rankings provide accurate and meaningful insights for your school choices.

Building work gets underway on City College Norwich’s £4.4m construction skills centre

city college norwich alternative education

Work has begun on a new skills centre that will help City College Norwich (@norwichcollege ) train more young people for careers in the construction industry.

The ground was broken today at the college’s Ipswich Road campus where the £4.4m building is being constructed by MJS Projects. Funding for the new building has come from the Department for Education’s Post-16 Capacity Fund, with the college investing approximately £400,000 of its own funds into the project.

The two-storey construction skills centre, which has been designed by LSI Architects, is being built next to the college’s existing bricklaying and carpentry and joinery workshops.

The new workshops within the construction skills centre have been designed for maximum flexibility, so they can be adapted in the future as industry demand for different trades evolves.

Meeting increased demand for electrical training

Much of the new workshop capacity within the 1,200 m² building will be given over to electrical training, with the college seeing particularly strong demand for places on its T Level Foundation Year (Electrical) and T Level Building Services Engineering (Electrical).

The increased demand for electrical training reflects the attractive salary opportunities and long-term career prospects for electricians.

The energy transition is a key driver of this, with electricians needed to work in the renewable energy sector and in other roles that support the transition to a low carbon economy, such as expanding the infrastructure needed for charging electrical vehicles.

Students to learn from the project

With construction work on the new building set to continue until December, the college is working with MJS Projects to give construction students plenty of opportunities to learn from the build.

T Level students in Design and Surveying, Plumbing, and Electrical, have begun a series of regular site visits to learn from MJS Projects team about specific aspects of the project that tie in with their curriculum.

David Henry, Director at MJS Projects, commented:

“The construction industry has a skills shortage. As a local company, MJS Projects is passionate about developing students’ understanding of the many varied careers the construction industry can offer. In delivering this new Construction Skills facility for City College Norwich, we will take this fantastic opportunity to link our site activities, the role of the designers, and the wider project team to the students’ learning, enhancing their studies with real-life practical experience.”

Prospective construction students advised to apply early

Liv Bradley, Head of Construction at City College Norwich, commented:

“Seeing work start on the new skills centre is a really exciting milestone for construction training at City College Norwich. We have a comprehensive offer, from entry level multi-skills, to trade Diplomas, T Levels, Apprenticeships and Higher Apprenticeships, with our students benefitting from great support from employers in the construction sector in Norfolk.

“Applications for our construction courses starting in September are up again and the new construction skills centre is going to be very busy once it is ready for teaching, playing a particularly important role for students and apprentices on our electrical courses. My advice to Year 10 students who hope to join a construction course with us in 2025/26, and learn in these great new facilities, is to apply as soon as possible after applications open on 1 st October.”

Creative Arts Building, City College Norwich

city college norwich alternative education

When the Learning and Skills Council crashed so did a lot of firms’ work in education. BDP lost half the team working on the £110m masterplan for Norwich City College. But the college finally scraped some cash together  – and gave BDP just 15 weeks for design plus 13 months on site. So what does a project look like that was based on a strong strategic foundation and then rushed through on a breakneck design and build programme?

BDP architect-director Wayne Head drew on the black massing and visible roof volumes of the ancient barns in Norwich city centre, and the highly glazed west walls of its churches. The form is stylish, even stylised; black extruded barns paired and cutting into the gradient of the site. Head fought hard for the wrap around weather boarded timber skin, with gutters hidden by a snowboard stop and special fire rated timber for the roof. It makes for familiar forms but does it truly belong to its immediate civic-suburban location?

Punched square windows are set in the long forms. A ribbon of clerestory glazing at ground floor level give dancers both light and privacy. The west end wall is glazed. Its border is mirrored, doubling the lawn and trees at the front by reflection. Factory-finished timber fins on rods run down the facade, more here, less there, part rhythm, part shading.

The masterplan’s north/south college axis is respected; the plan is pushed out to meet paths front on, inside creating a slip of atrium with light from above. This little bit of generosity gives the sense this building might have a heart – currently residing on the top floor where lovely fine art spaces under the exposed roof trusses team with life and look onto the garden via the glazed end wall.

The building should work for the long term future of the college, the first stage in the masterplan, should that ever be built. And forethought at this level seems to have allowed a knowledge of both city and college to imbue the design with powerful elements that have withstood the rigours of D&B. As well as much-needed quality teaching space the strong form gives the creative arts a presence the college had previously lacked.

Key to ground floor plan: 1 - Entrance, 2 - Fashion studio, 3 - Dance studio, 4 - Theatre workshop, 5 - Dye workshop, 6 - Plant room, 7 - 3D workshop

Prison inmates graduate from college’s automotive program

DEER LODGE, Mont. (Gray News) – Six inmates at Montana State Prison are celebrating a big milestone – graduating from college.

According to a news release from the State of Montana, the inmates graduated from Helena College’s automotive technology program on Monday.

“With these certificates, offenders will have a foot up in the job market as they work on reintegrating into our Montana communities,” DOC Rehabilitation and Programs Chief Scott Eychner said. “We’re all happy to celebrate their accomplishments and grateful for our partnership with Helena College.”

The students paid for the course with help from the Prison Education Program.

The state said throughout the course, incarcerated students had classroom lectures and hands-on learning at the prison. They also attended virtual classroom lectures.

One of the graduates, Bryce Adams, said he was happy to have the chance to receive a formal education in a field he is passionate about.

“I have worked on cars my whole life but never had any formal training. This course has given me the formal knowledge to be a professional technician,” Adams said. “This class gives me a leg to stand on and possible employment that is not bottom-of-the-barrel pay. This class ignited my desire to learn and continue future education.”

Helena College Dean/CEO Sandra Bauman attended the graduation ceremony to present the certificates.

“Their dedication to learning and their commitment to building a better future for themselves is truly inspiring,” Bauman said. “This program exemplifies our belief in the transformative power of education and equipping individuals with the skills they need for successful reentry into their communities.”

Much like the Elitserien Finals, we have a bit of an offense vs. defense match-up in this league Final.  While Ufa let their star top line of Alexander Radulov, Patrick Thoresen and Igor Grigorenko loose on the KHL's Western Conference, Mytischi played a more conservative style, relying on veterans such as former NHLers Jan Bulis, Oleg Petrov, and Jaroslav Obsut.  Just reaching the Finals is a testament to Atlant's disciplined style of play, as they had to knock off much more high profile teams from Yaroslavl and St. Petersburg to do so.  But while they did finish 8th in the league in points, they haven't seen the likes of Ufa, who finished 2nd.

This series will be a challenge for the underdog, because unlike some of the other KHL teams, Ufa's top players are generally younger and in their prime.  Only Proshkin amongst regular blueliners is over 30, with the work being shared by Kirill Koltsov (28), Andrei Kuteikin (26), Miroslav Blatak (28), Maxim Kondratiev (28) and Dmitri Kalinin (30).  Oleg Tverdovsky hasn't played a lot in the playoffs to date.  Up front, while led by a fairly young top line (24-27), Ufa does have a lot of veterans in support roles:  Vyacheslav Kozlov , Viktor Kozlov , Vladimir Antipov, Sergei Zinovyev and Petr Schastlivy are all over 30.  In fact, the names of all their forwards are familiar to international and NHL fans:  Robert Nilsson , Alexander Svitov, Oleg Saprykin and Jakub Klepis round out the group, all former NHL players.

For Atlant, their veteran roster, with only one of their top six D under the age of 30 (and no top forwards under 30, either), this might be their one shot at a championship.  The team has never won either a Russian Superleague title or the Gagarin Cup, and for players like former NHLer Oleg Petrov, this is probably the last shot at the KHL's top prize.  The team got three extra days rest by winning their Conference Final in six games, and they probably needed to use it.  Atlant does have younger regulars on their roster, but they generally only play a few shifts per game, if that.

The low event style of game for Atlant probably suits them well, but I don't know how they can manage to keep up against Ufa's speed, skill, and depth.  There is no advantage to be seen in goal, with Erik Ersberg and Konstantin Barulin posting almost identical numbers, and even in terms of recent playoff experience Ufa has them beat.  Luckily for Atlant, Ufa isn't that far away from the Moscow region, so travel shouldn't play a major role.

I'm predicting that Ufa, winners of the last Superleague title back in 2008, will become the second team to win the Gagarin Cup, and will prevail in five games.  They have a seriously well built team that would honestly compete in the NHL.  They represent the potential of the league, while Atlant represents closer to the reality, as a team full of players who played themselves out of the NHL.

  • Atlant @ Ufa, Friday Apr 8 (3:00 PM CET/10:00 PM EST)
  • Atlant @ Ufa, Sunday Apr 10 (1:00 PM CET/8:00 AM EST)
  • Ufa @ Atlant, Tuesday Apr 12 (5:30 PM CET/12:30 PM EST)
  • Ufa @ Atlant, Thursday Apr 14 (5:30 PM CET/12:30 PM EST)

Games 5-7 are as yet unscheduled, but every second day is the KHL standard, so expect Game 5 to be on Saturday, like an early start.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

city college norwich alternative education

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
