How to Win Erasmus Mundus Scholarship 2024-2025 Useful Tips

TIP#1 Find the ones you are interested in or an ideal fit for your needs. It is now the moment to be open in your mind and think outside of the box. Your prior educational or work experience doesn’t necessarily have to match the requirements of the program.   For more details on the programs you’ll need go to its website and read them thoroughly to ensure that your applications match your needs.   Perhaps send an informal email to the contact person with a few questions.

TIP#2 APPLICATION you’ve decided to go with a particular program or a few.   You’re now ready to complete an exhaustive study of each one of them which includes the most important topics of study and what are they looking for in potential students.   Pay attention to the buzzwords that they’re using.   Keep notes as you go.   These notes will be used to modify your CV and writing motivation letters.

TIP#3  It’s time to think about who you’ll solicit recommendation letters from.   Anyone who knows you in various capacities will be able to create an interesting personal and professional picture.   This could include your scientific advisor as well as your sports trainer, program coordinator, volunteer supervisor, etc.   Be aware that these individuals could be busy and it may take longer to receive letters.   Recommendation letter for a variety of programs, your CV needs been designed specifically for each of them.   You might want to include certain examples of relevant courses you have taken during your education , and don’t forget to mention the extracurricular pursuits you engage in.   Being involved outside of school can make you stand out.

Tips #4 : Make your letter with a positive tone and is forward-looking; – Define yourself.   Think about why you are pursuing Erasmus Mundus; – Explain why the Program you have chosen is the right one for you; – State what qualities can you bring to the Program; – Demonstrate the fit between your background and the Program; – Highlight your strong points, your previous experience in education, interpersonal skills; – Tell in which way you distinguish yourself from others; – Make your motivation letter end on strong and positive note DONTs: – Don’t let your motivation letter simply echo your CV; – Don’t be vague; – Don’t be lengthy.   Generally one page is sufficient; – Don’t use complex language constructions or flowery phrases

TIP#5 INTERVIEW You have been pre-selected and now it’s time to prepare for interview.   Research thoroughly – study universities’ courses or research pages.   Consider how this relates to your personal experience and your background.   Consider the most appealing elements of this Program that you can personally enjoy.   Consider what you could contribute to the Program including your strengths and your weaknesses.   Offer them new information they may not have seen on your applications.   Then, write all this down and provide an example for every point.   It is helpful to apply the STAR principle whenever you do (Situation- Task-Action-Result) 1.   Keep your profile professional.   Be sure your Skype photo and username are suitable for interviews (or make an appropriate Skype account) 2.   Keep a list of notes in front of you to help you remember all the things you’d like to say 3.   Pick a quiet place.   Get rid of all distractions around you. Keep it neutral.   Do not interrupt your interview.   Make sure that people are aware that you are scheduled for an interview, and ensure that nobody gets in the way; 5.   Make sure you tweak the Skype audio prior to the time to ensure that you are able to hear and understand it without difficulties.   Check that all the other applications on your computer are shut (especially when they emit noise).   If you are able, use earphones.

TIP#6 INTERVIEW (SKYPE) Take a look at the recorded version of the webinar hosted by the Erasmus Mundus Association(EMA) with Emrah Kara kaya.   Emhart told his story of applying for the Erasmus Mundus Scholarships , and he offered some advice for prospective applicants.   Emrah is well-placed to conduct this webinar since he is involved in a variety of Erasmus Mundus programs and is currently Vice-President of the Erasmus Mundus Association

Erasmus Mundus was launched in 2004 as a higher education cooperation programme funded by the European Commission and continued until 2013. Beginning in 2014, Erasmus Mundus became part of the Erasmus+ funding scheme umbrella which lasted until 2020. The Erasmus+ scheme was renewed for the period of 2021-2027 and is expected to triple the number of participants. While the Erasmus Mundus Joint PhD degrees no longer exist, Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree (EMJMD) programmes continue to be offered under the umbrella of Erasmus+.

Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degrees (EMJMDs)

Are joint Master level study programmes carried out by consortia of European universities.

Provide a number of scholarships for students from the whole world to study in Europe.

Give the students a chance to study in at least two European countries.

Offer multiple or joint Master degrees at the end of successful completion of the programme.

Traveling

Erasmus Mundus degrees have earned a reputation as highly competitive masters and doctoral (not available any more) programmes that offer students the opportunity to study at several European and partner universities, invariably leading to joint or multiple university degrees.

Are you interested in applying for an EMJMD programme?

EMA values community building, and the Association's members include newly accepted students, current students and alumni. EMA also has a strong connection with the EC, EACEA, EU Delegations, consortia and other key stakeholders.

EMA runs Erasmus+ workshop, with focus on EMJMDs to promote Higher Education in Europe, through its various mobility programmes. As a general rule, EMA does not advise on or engage in application processes, decisions and internal rules and regulations set by the management of EMJMD consortia, or their universities.

EMA organizes pre-departure orientations and gatherings for incoming students in collaboration with EU Delegations. EMA Country Representatives offer local support to students who are preparing for their EMJMD journey and Programme Representatives represent their EMJMD course and can be contacted with specific questions. As a general rule, EMA does not advise on or engage in visa application processes or decisions.

Once a student has been officially accepted for an EMJMD she/he can join the EMA community and benefit further from the invaluable support that the community offers. EMA remains available to members of the community as and when needed, throughout their studies and beyond.

The deadline for scholarship applications for entry in 2024 was 19th January 2024. We will continue to accept self-funded applications after the scholarship deadline, until all available places are filled.

The University of Glasgow is the co-ordinating institution of the MAGMa Consortium. You must submit your application for the MAGMa programme and the Erasmus Mundus Scholarship through our online application portal. Other consortium partners cannot accept applications.

The deadline for Erasmus Mundus scholarship applications for entry in 2024 was 19 January 2024.

  • The University of Glasgow Admissions team will assess your academic qualifications and English language test results. If you’re eligible for entry to the programme based on these, we’ll offer you a place.
  • After the scholarship application deadline, we’ll send all eligible applications to the MAGMa Consortium partners. They’ll review your personal statement, CV and references. The consortium may also want to interview you at this stage. We’ll announce the 2024 scholarship winners in April.

You’ll still be able to submit a self-funded application once the scholarship deadline has passed. We’ll review these applications as they come in, and will continue to make offers until all the available places are filled.

The Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters Scholarship is accepting applications for the 2024-25 academic year.

This scholarship is open to students wishing to pursue a master’s degree.

At the end of the scholarship, successful candidates will be awarded either:

  • A joint master’s degree
  • Multiple master’s degrees

There are 215 courses to choose from via the Erasmus Mundus catalogue , and students can apply directly to their chosen course. These courses span across several universities in the European Union, and students can learn about individual application requirements on each programme’s page.

The scholarship covers tuition fees and provides a stipend ranging from €1,100 to €1,500 per month for 24 months. Additionally, recipients receive a travel allowance, international airfare tickets between each country after each semester, and the flexibility to choose any destination to work in worldwide after completing the programme.

The programmes involve at least three universities from three different countries and often include partners from both academic and non-academic fields. Programmes cover a range of skills including academic study, research, gaining practical experience, and working on and defending a thesis.

Scholarships for international students  University scholarships available for refugee students  Scholarships for students with disabilities

To be eligible to apply, applicants must have either completed a bachelor’s degree or be in the final year of their bachelor’s studies. Students must also have graduated before their chosen master’s programme begins.

All undergraduate students from the EU are eligible to apply. Undergraduate students from Iceland, Liechtenstein, North Macedonia, Norway, Serbia and Turkey are eligible to apply for the Erasmus+ programme because these non-EU countries are affiliated locations. The Erasmus Mundus joint master’s degrees are also available to non-EU students.

Eligibility criteria will differ across the programmes, so it’s important to check each programme before applying.

The application process varies depending on the chosen programme, but most will require letters of recommendation, a motivation letter, academic transcripts, CV, proof of residence, and proof of English proficiency (an IELTS score of 6.5 or equivalent).

Although many programmes closed their deadlines in January 2024, some programmes are still open for applications until March 2024.

To further support applicants, the Erasmus Mundus Association (EMA) provides valuable resources , including course contacts, events with national volunteer representatives, and success stories from previous applicants. This offers applicants the opportunity to connect with mentors, advisers and the Erasmus+ international office or EMJMD coordinators before their final submission.

Scholarships

  • Erasmus Mundus Scholarships

ILGSPD Erasmus Mundus Scholarship applications are now open for September 2024 entry. The deadline to apply for the scholarship is 19th of January 2024.  We welcome applications from students around the world.

Please submit your application online to the University of Glasgow, see   How to apply.   Please note you must include a copy of your scholarship form on your programme application form.

The Erasmus Mundus scholarship includes:

  • a contribution to the student participation costs (including tuition fees, full insurance coverage and any other mandatory costs related to the student’s participation in the EMJMD study programme
  • a contribution to student travel and installation costs
  • a monthly subsistence allowance for the entire duration of the EMJMD study programme.

Erasmus Mundus scholarships can be offered to students from any region of the world; however, no more than three with the same nationality will be awarded in the same intake under the same category. The scholarship’s terms depend on the student’s nationality and residence.

Selection timetable

Eligibility check.

All applications are subject to an eligibility check which covers all aspects of the application : respect of the application deadline, completeness of the application file, eligibility of the candidate in relation to the Erasmus Mundus criteria. Applicants who fail to provide necessary documentation by the appropriate deadline will be excluded from the application procedure and will be informed of the specific reason for ineligibility.

Scholarship competition

To be eligible to be considered for scholarship, you must first have secured a place on the degree programme (unconditional or conditional). The University of Glasgow postgraduate admissions office assesses all applications and will reply directly to the applicant to let them know if they have been offered a place. Applicants who receive an offer of a place on the degree programme, and who have submitted the scholarship application on time, will be put forward to the scholarship competition.

Selection criteria

The ILGSPD consortium selection committee assess each application according to the following criteria :

  • Academic merit and relevance and level of academic qualifications) – 50%
  • Personal statement of motivation and research interests – 30%
  • Quality of (academic) references – 10%
  • Other (e.g. relevant research/professional experiences/interests) – 10%

When a main list scholarship student withdraws, he/she is replaced by the first eligible candidate on the reserve list. In this particular case, the eligibility criterion concerns the nationality of the reserve list candidate and the rule concerning the presence of a maximum of three nationals from the same country among the scholarship holders in each intake. If there are already three other students with the same nationality on the main list, the consortium will have to take the next eligible candidate respecting its own ranking list (European Commission’s regulations).

Appeal procedure for candidates who fail to secure a scholarship

All candidates will be notified of the decision of the scholarship selection committee by email only in April. Candidates who do not secure a scholarship and  who wish to appeal the decision of the scholarship selection committee must do so   in writing by email within 2 weeks (14 days) from the point of notification  by the ILGSPD consortium of their failure to win a scholarship. The email should be addressed to the ILGSPD consortium at the following address: [email protected] . The email subject heading should contain the words “ILGSPD scholarship appeal”. The reasons for the appeal must be clearly stated in the email. Note: A candidate may appeal ONLY on the grounds of defective or unfair procedure by the ILGSPD scholarship selection committe

  • EMJMD student scholarships cover the entire duration of the Master course and are awarded exclusively for full-time enrolment in the course. Scholarship candidates must have already obtained a first higher education degree or demonstrate a recognised equivalent level of learning according to national rules and legislation in place. Candidates who will only obtain their first higher education degree at the end of the academic year preceding the EMJMD intake can nevertheless apply for a scholarship and can be selected by the consortium, under the condition that the student obtains the required degree prior to the beginning of the Master course.
  • ILGSPD Scholarship Student Agreement
  • Students who are former Action 1 Erasmus Mundus Master/Doctoral Course scholarship holders are not eligible for an additional EMJMD scholarship . Successful applicants cannot benefit from another EU grant while pursuing the EMJMD scholarship studies.
  • EMJMD scholarship holders must spend at least two complete mobility periods in at least two of the consortium’s full HEI partners which are located in different Programme Countries. Each of these mandatory mobility periods must include a volume of study/research or equivalent corresponding to at least 30 ECTS.
  • The mandatory mobility periods cannot be replaced by virtual mobility neither can they take place in institutions outside the consortium
  • Additional study/research/thesis preparation/placement periods can take place in other participating organisations in the consortium (partner and associated partner) under the condition that the activities concerned are implemented under the direct supervision of the consortium partner.
  • Contribution to subsistence costs will  not  be given to scholarship holders from a Partner Country for periods exceeding three months of the EMJMD spent in any Partner Country.
  • Contribution to subsistence costs will  not  be given to scholarship holders for periods of the EMJMD spent in their country of residence.

Scholarships are dependent on both nationality and residency.

Students with a double nationality (of a Partner and of a Programme Country) must specify the nationality under which they submit their scholarship application.

When determining the contribution to  participation costs , the consortium defines the student category – either Programme Country or Partner Country. The definition of the student category depends on his/her nationality and on whether the student resided in a Programme Country for more than 12 months over the last five years before applying (applicable only to students with Partner Country nationality). Therefore:

  • Students whose nationality is one of the Erasmus+ Programme Countries count as Programme Country students.
  • Students whose nationality is one of the Erasmus+ Partner Countries and who are not residents nor have carried out their main activity (studies, training or work) for more than a total of 12 months over the last five years in a Programme Country are considered as Partner Country students. The five year reference period for this 12 month rule is calculated backwards from the submission deadline.
  • Students whose nationality is one of the Erasmus+ Partner Countries who do  not  fulfil the Partner Country criteria defined above (12 month rule) count as Programme Country students.
  • Example: a Serbian student who lived in Germany for 13 months, 3 years before the deadline date should apply as a Programme Country student; a Mexican student who has been living in Spain for 11 months as of the deadline date (and never before in the 5 year period) should apply as a Partner Country student.

The contribution to  travel and installation costs  takes into account  only  the residence (as of the deadline date) of the scholarship holder regardless of the category under which the student has applied.

If you’re offered a scholarship, you will be required to provide proof of residency :

  • a residence certificate issued in accordance with the candidate’s municipality normal registration rules
  • a certificate from the candidate’s place of work, study or training issued by the employer or institution in question.

Both documents must have been issued within 12 months before the scholarship submission deadline.

Please note that the data you provide in your application will be shared with the ILGSPD consortium partners as part of the Erasmus Mundus scholarship review process .

Personal data will be sent to the Educational, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA) and may be used for the purposes of evaluating the programme, efficiently managing the project, and producing statistics. Data could be made available to the EACEA, the European Commission, the European External Action Service staff, as well as to other stakeholders of the Erasmus+ programme, such as Erasmus+ National Agencies, National Erasmus+ Offices and the Erasmus Mundus Student and Alumni Association.
