If you’re looking for some activities, games or resources for teaching English speaking, then you’ll certainly want to check out ESL Speaking. There is a wealth of these things, along with lesson plans, worksheets and more.

Okay, let’s be honest here. ITESLJ does certainly need an overhaul to take it out of the 1990’s but it’s certainly worth a look, especially if you’re looking for ESL worksheets. In terms of the sheer amount of content, this site rules them all and with a bit of searching, you should be able to find what you’re looking for easily enough.

Breaking News English

If you teach teenagers or adults conversational English , this may be the only website you ever need. There are some excellent lesson plans based on what’s in the news lately. There’s a variety of levels and activities that target various skills ( reading , listening, writing, vocabulary , etc.).

English Listening Lesson Library

A few years ago, I taught a class focused exclusively on ESL listening and to be honest, I was a bit nervous. That’s when I found out about the ESL teaching awesome of ELLO. They have some excellent audio and video lessons that are detailed, interesting, and engaging. Just about everything you need to teach ESL listening.

ESL Writing

If you teach writing, either formal (academic) or informal, then the ultimate website for that is ESL Writing . There are lesson plans, activities and a whole bunch of other resources to help students write more interestingly and creatively. The results? Excellent, if my students are any indication!

I love to use different kinds of media in my classes whenever possible and ESL video makes this super easy. Not only are there curated videos but you can find accompanying lesson plans, quizzes, etc to go along with them. This makes it super easy to plan some interesting ESL lessons.

ESL websites for teachers and students

ESL Job Resources

Profs abroad.

This ESL website is the first and only site dedicated exclusively to university ESL teaching jobs around the world. It’s paid, but totally worth the low fee is you’re serious about landing one of these sweet gigs that don’t involve teaching little kids! New jobs are added frequently so consider subscribing again, even if you have in the past.

Out of all the ESL teaching job websites, ESL Cafe stands a cut above the rest. Not in terms of usability, although it’s a lot better since a recent site overhaul, but just in terms of sheer numbers of jobs. They are divided up into China, Korea, and international ones and this should certainly be your first stop when starting a job search.

Along with ESL Cafe, TEFL.com is a go-to resource for job seekers. It’s been around for years and certainly has a good base of schools that advertise there. It’s less focused on China and Korea than ESL Cafe and can be a good place to find jobs off the beaten track like Puerto Rico, Sweden , or  Finland .

I generally don’t recommend recruiters to find ESL teaching jobs with only one exception, Teach Away. They are super-s0lid, totally above board and filter out all the crappy jobs that you don’t want anyway. If you’re a certified teacher in your home country, Teach Away should also be able to land a solid job in a public school or international school.

The Jet Program

One of the most interesting options for ESL teaching jobs in Japan is the Jet Program. Basically, it places native English speakers in public schools throughout Japan, with the focus on it being a language and cultural exchange. The pay is quite good too but it’s very competitive to get this job. It’s one of the only ways to get teaching English in Okinawa jobs .

EF English First

Your first stop for all the information you need to know about how to get this job and what to do once you have it is My Life! Teaching in a Korean University, run by a vet of 10 years teaching in Korean unis.

Waygook.org

If you’re teaching in South Korea, or are considering heading there, head over to Waygook. The forums are filled with helpful people ready to answer just about any question you might have. And, if you’re teaching in a public school and need some lesson planning resources? They’re very well-known for that as well.

Go Overseas

If you’re looking for specific information about teaching in a certain country, Go Overseas should be one of your first stops. They have this general information but also a ton of informative articles about certain jobs to consider, salaries, tips for living and more.

If you’re looking for all things teaching ESL in Japan, including jobs in an Eikaiwa , apartments, studying Japanese, forums, etc., then Gaijin Pot should be your first stop. It’s far and away the best site for English teachers in Japan.

If you’re looking for a forum to get all your questions answered about teaching English in Taiwan, Forumosa should be your first stop. It’s a very active site with lots of people willing to answer any and all questions bout teaching ESL in Taiwan.

International TEFL Academy

I don’t love to recommend websites that sell TEFL courses with one exception, International TEFL Academy. They have a ton of great information about various countries to consider teaching in, particularly the Middle East. There isn’t a ton of information about this but this website is one of the best.

Transitions Abroad

A nice source for general information about teaching ESL in a certain county is Transitions Abroad. Plus, they have jobs, detailed country guides, and specific information like how to travel around a certain place.

Best Websites for ESL Students

Using english.

If I’m going to recommend a single, general resource to my students for practicing their English skills, it’s Using English. This website is designed for ESL students specifically and has idioms, English grammar, quizzes, vocabulary and all the other things in abundance.

ESL Games World

One of the best sources for all things kids practicing English online is ESL Games World. There are a ton of interactive and engaging ESL games for kids here along with lots of things teachers can use like PowerPoint and printable games.

Business English Pod

If you have students who are serious about business English, then you’ll definitely want to recommend Business English Pod to them. It’s a paid site but there is also a lot of free resources to check out. Teachers can use it too when teaching business English! It’s my go-to source for this kind of class.

Learn English Kids

The British Council certainly does some great work when it comes to websites for English learners. Learn English Kids has a ton of resources that are interactive and fun. I always like to recommend it to parents and kids who want to get some extra practice for English when not in my class!

This is the adult version from the British Council of their kids’ site. It has a ton of excellent resources for learning English and you could literally spend a lifetime cruising around this site, learning new things! This is also the source for all things technical ESL teaching, including examples of discourse .

Helpful Online Resources for Teaching ELLs

Websites and teacher-created videos make content more accessible for English language learners—whether they’re in the classroom or at home.

Whether you’re having school remotely or in person, online learning is a powerful tool teachers can leverage to support English language learners (ELLs). Research shows that ELLs’ learning is enhanced by interactive visual aids and access to lessons they can follow at their own pace.

There are many free or inexpensive digital resources that teachers can use to create these learning experiences. Lessons can be recorded as they are conducted online in real time so that students can later access the content without a teacher present. Teachers can also incorporate audio, images, or videos into their lessons. These resources can support ELLs with fun, engaging tools that help them review and build vocabulary and literacy skills.

In a classroom, ELLs can benefit from online learning at a station that the teacher sets up as part of a lesson in which students rotate through centers or stations. A study published in the journal Language Learning & Technology concluded that “tablet computers, as well as other mobile technologies, are ideal tools to foster learner autonomy.” Supplemental virtual lessons can help differentiate instruction to meet the needs of ELLs (as well as other students with diverse learning needs) who may be at different language proficiency levels or need additional practice with discrete skills.

I’ve collected a list of additional approaches and resources I’ve found especially helpful in my own English as a second language classroom. All of the resources below are helpful for all students, not just ELLs.

Using Videos to Support ELLs

Many computers allow users to record what is happening on the screen in real time, and also have the option to simultaneously record the user’s voice. Your recording will be saved as a video file, which you can share with students or upload to your online learning platform. You might also ask students to do this themselves and share their recordings with you. Teachers can use narrated screen recordings for many activities: modeling read-alouds, conducting mini-lessons, editing essays, and showing students how to do effective online research. This Digital Trends article has information on different ways to record your screen.

YouTube Education , which is free and has no ads, curates YouTube’s content for educational purposes and allows teachers to create a playlist that can be shared with students. Some of my favorite playlists are Essential Literature , which gives clear and concise summaries of popular texts, and National Geographic , which has videos of varying lengths about topics ranging from plants and animals to geography and history. Both of these playlists allow you to turn on closed captions so that students can read the text as they watch the video, which is particularly helpful for ELLs.

ELL Learning Apps and Websites

• Kahoot! is a tool to create interactive audiovisual learning games, reviews, and assessments. Students can compete in games against each other in real time, from any device, by using a simple code. The premium subscription-based distance learning tools are currently free to support distance learning during the Covid-19 pandemic.
• Quizlet is a digital flash card program that many students find useful for studying vocabulary. Teachers can use, and customize, premade study sets or make their own. The free version has ads; a paid subscription provides access to the ad-free platform.
• Newsela has high-interest current events articles, with corresponding images and questions, that are offered in up to five different Lexile levels. To support distance learning during Covid-19, the entire site is currently free—usually most of the content is available only with a paid subscription.
• CommonLit is a free site that has over 2,000 fiction and nonfiction reading passages searchable by title, genre, grade level, literary device, and Lexile level. It also has a growing library of content in Spanish. Texts have guiding questions and assessments, and many are organized into units of study.
• Duolingo is a helpful free language learning app that offers English as a second language courses in more than 20 first languages. Its adaptive software is designed to resemble a game and can allow students to compete against themselves—or their friends.
• BBC Teach has an extensive collection of free teaching resources in over 30 subjects, including English learning for adults. It also has interactive lessons with rich videos and graphics.
• The British Council is the United Kingdom’s international organization for sharing British culture and language. Its website has a variety of useful links and mobile apps with activities, games, and audiovisual lessons.

Getting Online

These resources are all available on any computer or mobile device. While some of the video-rich resources require significant bandwidth, many of these resources automatically adapt to slower internet speeds, making them more accessible to all students. In classrooms, it could be helpful to set up a station with a few devices that leverage these digital resources.

For students at home, many internet service providers, including Spectrum Broadband , Mint Mobile , Comcast , Altice and Cox , are currently offering free internet access and mobile data packages to support distance learning—be sure to read the fine print because some providers will automatically charge people after the free period is over.

For students who don’t have access to an internet-enabled device, tablets can cost as little as $35. Chromebooks, simple internet-enabled laptops, start at $75.

It’s a resource with hundreds of thousands of ready-made worksheets, PowerPoint presentations and online exercises. The caveat here is that you must submit contributions before you can download them.

Worksheet downloads are conveniently organized by grammar, vocabulary, listening, speaking, reading and writing worksheets. In addition, they offer cinema, television, games and song worksheets.

The site also has a forum for teachers, where ESL instructors can ask questions, get advice and share ideas.

I have often used LanternFish for young ESL learners, but it’s also a valuable site for teenage and adult learners. With hundreds of worksheets and lesson plans, it’s a helpful resource with lots of great ideas to better engage your students.

LanternFish offers flashcards, ESL exercises specifically for adults, a writer’s workshop and fun worksheet activities like word searches and crosswords for your students.

The site has a large listing of creative writing prompts, which can be really fun for more advanced students.

BusyTeacher.org is one of the best sites on the web for ESL teachers. It has thousands of worksheets and activities available immediately for free download. No signing up, no membership and no fees (though you can purchase their entire library for about $100).

One especially helpful offering is their 360 free “ warmers and fillers ” which include warm-up activities and ice-breakers to get your students engaged quickly from the start of your lesson.

One of their warmers is the “How Was Your Weekend” activity. The idea here is to give the students the identity of a famous person on a slip of paper (or let them think of their own). In pairs, the students ask questions and try to guess one another’s identity based on what they did over the weekend.

The site also offers great advice for ESL teachers, interesting creative writing prompts and much more.

• E-cigarette marketing, the availability of flavored products, social influences, and the effects of nicotine can influence youth to start or continue vaping. 3 4
• Most middle and high school students who vape want to quit. 5
• Many people have an important role in protecting youth from vaping including parents and caregivers, educators and school administrators, health care providers, and community partners.
• States and local communities can implement evidence-based policies, programs, and services to reduce youth vaping.

E-cigarette use among U.S. youth

In 2023, e-cigarettes were the most commonly used tobacco product among middle and high school students in the United States. In 2023: 6

• 550,000 (4.6%) middle school students.
• 1.56 million (10.0%) high school students.
• Among students who had ever used e-cigarettes, 46.7% reported current e-cigarette use.
• 1 in 4 (25.2%) used an e-cigarette every day.
• 1 in 3 (34.7%) used an e-cigarette on at least 20 of the last 30 days.
• 9 in 10 (89.4%) used flavored e-cigarettes.
• Most often used disposable e-cigarettes (60.7%) followed by e-cigarettes with prefilled or refillable pods or cartridges (16.1%).
• Most commonly reported using the following brands: Elf Bar, Esco Bars, Vuse, JUUL, and Mr. Fog.

Most middle and high school students who vape want to quit and have tried to quit. 5 In 2020:

• 63.9% of students who currently used e-cigarettes reported wanting to quit.
• 67.4% of students who currently used e-cigarettes reported trying to quit in the last year.

Most tobacco use, including vaping, starts and is established during adolescence. There are many factors associated with youth tobacco product use . These include:

• Tobacco advertising that targets youth.
• Product accessibility.
• Availability of flavored products.
• Social influences.
• Adolescent brain sensitivity to nicotine.

Some groups of middle and high school students use e-cigarettes at a higher percentage than others. For example, in 2023: 6

• More females than males reported current e-cigarette use.
• Non-Hispanic multiracial students: 20.8%.
• Non-Hispanic White students: 18.4%.
• Hispanic or Latino students: 18.2%.
• Non-Hispanic American Indian and Alaska Native students: 15.4%.
• Non-Hispanic Black or African American students: 12.9%.

Many young people who vape also use other tobacco products, including cigarettes and cigars. 7 This is called dual use. In 2020: 8

• About one in three high school students (36.8%) who vaped also used other tobacco products.
• One in two middle school students (49.0%) who vaped also used other tobacco products.

E-cigarettes can also be used to deliver other substances, including cannabis. In 2016, nearly one in three (30.6%) of U.S. middle and high school students who had ever used an e-cigarette reported using marijuana in the device. 9
