Holy Quran As the Final Guidance By: Saqib Muhammad Khan Senior Faculty Member, DAPS

The Presentation includes: • Introduction to the Holy Quran • Divinity & Authenticity of the Holy Quran • Structure of the Holy Quran • Scope of the Holy Quran • Conclusion

Holy Quran The Ultimate Divine Book Holy Quran is the Ultimate Divine Book which was revealed upon the Holy Prophet ﷺor the guidance of whole humanity. The Quran is the final version of the same Message that Allah  had sent earlier to mankind through many of His Rusul (Messengers). The Holy Quran is the source of all Islamic religious beliefs and practices. It is the most read and the most quoted book in the world. This is the only Book, which has been memorized by millions of people by heart since its revelation.

The Divinity & Authenticity of the Holy Quran This is absurd and unthinkable to suspect on the authenticity and divinity of the Holy Quran. About its divinity Almighty Allah states: وَ اِنَّہٗ لَتَنۡزِیۡلُ رَبِّ الْعٰلَمِیۡنَ ﴿۱۹۲﴾ؕ نَزَلَ بِہِ الرُّوۡحُ الْاَمِیۡنُ ﴿۱۹۳﴾ۙ عَلٰی قَلْبِکَ لِتَکُوۡنَ مِنَ الْمُنۡذِرِیۡنَ ﴿۱۹۴﴾ۙ “And undoubtedly, this Quran has been sent down by the Lord of the worlds. The trusted spirit has descended with it. On your heart that you may warn.”

The Divinity & Authenticity of the Holy Quran اِنَّاۤ اَوْحَیۡنَاۤ اِلَیۡکَ کَمَاۤ اَوْحَیۡنَاۤ اِلٰی نُوۡحٍ وَّالنَّبِیّٖنَ مِنۡۢ بَعْدِہٖ “Indeed, We have revealed to you (O Beloved Prophet) such a revelation as We revealed to Nuh and the Prophets after him.” About those who suspect its divinity, Holy Quran challenges them to prove their suspect and claims that they can never do so; وَ اِنۡ کُنۡتُمْ فِیۡ رَیۡبٍ مِّمَّا نَزَّلْنَا عَلٰی عَبْدِنَا فَاۡتُوۡا بِسُوۡرَۃٍ مِّنۡ مِّثْلِہٖ ۪ وَادْعُوۡا شُہَدَآءَکُمۡ مِّنۡ دُوۡنِ اللہِ اِنْ کُنْتُمْ صٰدِقِیۡنَ ﴿۲۳﴾ “And if you have any doubt as to what We have sent down upon Our (exalted) servant, then bring just one chapter like it and call upon all your helpers besides Allah, if you are truthful. But if you fail to do so - and surely you are bound to fail then guard yourselves against the Fire whose fuel are men and stones, which has been prepared for the infidels.”

Structure of the Holy Quran • The Quran was revealed in small portions over a period of 23 years. • There are 114 Chapters in the Quran. Each chapter of Quran is called a Surah. • Each Chapteris divided into various Verses. Some contain more verses while others less.  • Surah al-Baqarah, the second chapter of the Quran, is the biggest of all. It contains 286 Ayat (Verses). • The shortest Surah of the Quran is Surah al-Kauthar. It contains only three Verses. • The Quran is also divided into thirty almost equal portions. Each of these portions is called a Juz in Arabic.

Structure of the Holy Quran • The Quran was revealed to the Messenger of Allah, Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم in small portions. • Some portions of the Quran were revealed inMakkah while other portions of it were revealed in Madinah. • TheChaptersthat were revealed in Makkah, are known asMakki. The Chapters revealed in Madinah after Hijrah(Migration), are known as Madani. • TheMakkan period of revelation was from 610 AD to 622 AD.

Structure of the Holy Quran • The Messenger of Allah, Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم received the first Wahiin 610 AD, in the small cave in the mountain of Hira. That mountain is now known as JablNur (Mountain of Radiance). It is located about two and a half miles (Four Kilometers) away from the Ka’bah in the city of Makkah. • In the first Wahi, the Messenger of Allah, Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم received the first five (Verses) of Surah (Chapter) al-‘Alaq (The Clot).

Structure of the Holy Quran • The Madani period was from 622 CE to 632 CE. Eighty-six(86) Chapters were revealed in Makkah, and twenty-eight (28) Chapters were revealed in Madinah. • MakkiSuwarcontain4417Verses, MadaniSuwar contain 1819 verses. • The total number of Ayat (Verses) in the Hoy Quran is six thousand two hundred thirty six (6,236).

Structure of the Holy Quran • The last revelation of the Quran was the two hundred eighty-first Ayah (Verse) of Surah (Chapter) al-Baqarah (The Cow). • Surah al-Fatihah, the first Surah (Chapter) of the Quran was the first complete chapter to be revealed and Surah an-Nasr (The Help) was the last. • Versesof the Quran are not arranged in their chronological order of revelation. The Messenger of Allah, Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم used to set the place of various Chaptersand Verseshimself.

Scope of the Holy Quran The Holy Qur’an discusses an enormous range of topics: • It tells us about God, His attributes, man's position in the universe, man’s aim in life, how to attain that aim, and how he stands in relation to God and to his fellow-beings. • It gives details of what one should believe and how it should be put into practice. The next life is described in it in full. • Histories of previous nations and their Prophets, as well as many events from the life of the Holy Prophet ﷺ are also given in the Holy Qur’an.

Scope of the Holy Quran • The Holy Qur’an, being the primary source of Islamic jurisprudence, has enunciated the basic principles according to which the Islamic laws governing all aspects of human mortality are established. • The Holy Qur’an, as it is the direct revelation from Allah, is also the first source of Islamic laws. Hence, it is natural that whenever legal experts decide to know any Shariah law, they seek it in the Holy Qur’an first. In other words, it is the first medium through which we get to the Shariah Laws. • The Holy Qur’an is also an authority for the authenticity of Sunnah, Ijma (consensus) and Qiyas (Analogy) the other three sources of Shariah laws.

Scope of the Holy Quran • It gives arguments to disprove false beliefs of all kinds, and answers all sorts of questions and objections raised about its teachings and about the Holy Prophet ﷺ. • Guidance, laws and regulations on everyday subjects such as family life, business dealings, the law, war and peace, women's rights, hygiene, government and democracy, is also described in the Holy Book. When dealing with any topic, the Holy Qur’an gives reasons, arguments and evidence to support its teachings, and it challenges those who disagree with it to produce proof of their views.

Conclusion The Holy Qur’an contains the most comprehensive divine instructions mainly to provide guidance to mankind till the Day of Resurrection. It enables mankind to distinguish between truth and falsehood and to acquire spiritual prosperity in this life as well as in the Life Hereafter. It is the final authority for all Muslims, and the laws described in it are final. Legal experts frequently refer to these when they set out the best way of life for their people.

An_Introduction_to_the_Quran_(part_1_of_2)_001.jpg

The first thing to understand about the Quran is its form.  The Arabic word, ‘Quran,’ literally means both ‘recitation’ and ‘reading’. Similarly, the Quran was both recited orally and written down in book form.  The true power of the Quran remains in the oral recitation, as it is meant to be read aloud and melodiously, but still the verses were written down on available materials as an aid to memorizing and guarding it,  and these were collected and ordered in book form both privately and, at a later stage, institutionally. The Quran was not meant to tell a chronological story, and thus, the Quran should not be viewed as a sequential narrative like the book of Genesis.  The Arabic book that goes by the name Quran is about as long as the New Testament.  In most editions it is about 600 pages in length.

In contrast to the Hebrew Bible and the New Testament, the Quran was issued from the mouth of a single person, who recited what he heard from the angel Gabriel.  On the other hand, both the Jewish and the Christian scriptures are collections of many books that were written down by a large number of human beings, and opinions differ as to their status as revelation.

How Is The Quran Organized?

The Quran is composed of 114 parts or chapters of unequal length.  Each chapter is called a surah in Arabic and each sentence or phrase of the Quran is called an aaya , literally ‘a sign.’  Like the Bible, the Quran is divided into discrete units, referred to as verses in English. These verses are not standard in length or meter, and where each begins and ends was not decided by human beings, but dictated by God.  Each one is a discrete act of locution of closed signification, or ‘sign’, denoted by the word aayah in Arabic.  The shortest of the surahs has ten words, and the longest surah , which is placed second in the text, has 6,100 words.  The first surah , the Fatihah ("The Opening"), is relatively short (twenty-five words).  From the second surah onward, the surahs gradually decrease in length, although this is not a hard and fast rule.  The last sixty surahs take up about as much space as the second.  Some of the longer aayahs are much longer than the shortest surahs .  All surahs, except one, begin with Bisillah hir-Rahman nir-Rahim , ‘In the Name of God, the Most-Merciful, the Compassionate.’  Each surah has a name that usually mentions a key motto within it.  For example, the longest surah , Surah al-Baqara , or "The Cow", is named after the story of Moses commanding the Jews to offer a sacrifice of a cow, which begins by God saying:

"And remember when Moses said to his people: ‘God commands that you sacrifice a cow…’" (Quran 2:67)

Since the various chapters are of various lengths, the Quran was divided by scholars of the first century after the death of the Prophet into thirty roughly equal parts, each part is called a juz’ in Arabic.  This division of the Quran was done in order for people to memorize or read it in a more organized fashion, and it has no influence on the original structure, as they are mere marks on the sides of the pages denoting the part.  In the Muslim month of fasting, Ramadan, one juz’ is usually recited every night, and the entire Quran is completed in the thirty days of the month.

Translations of Quran

A beginner should know a few points about Quran translations.

First, there is a distinction between the Quran and its translation.  In Christian view, the Bible is the Bible, no matter what language it may be in.  But a translation of the Quran is not the word of God, for the Quran is the exact Arabic words spoken by God, revealed to Prophet Muhammad by Gabriel.  The word of God is only the Arabic Quran as God says:

"Indeed, I revealed it as an Arabic Quran." (Quran 12:2)

A translation is simply an explanation of the meanings of the Quran.  That is why one modern English translation has been titled "The Meaning of the Glorious Quran": it strives only to give the meaning, but falls short, as any translation must, of reproducing the form of the Holy Book.  The translated text loses the inimitable quality of the original, so be aware of the degree to which a translation reflects the original message at every level of meaning, and that it will probably not match it.  For this reason, all which is regarded as ‘recitation’ of the Quran is to be done in Arabic, such as the recitation of the Quran in the five daily prayers of the Muslims.

Second, there is no perfect translation of the Quran, and, being human works, each almost always has errors.  Some translations are better in their linguistic quality, while others are noted for their exactness in portraying the meaning.  Many inaccurate, and sometimes misleading, translations that are generally not accepted as reliable renditions of the Quran by mainstream Muslims are sold in the market.

Third, while a review of all the English translations is out of the scope of this article, some translations are recommended over others.  The most widely read English translation is by Abdullah Yusuf ‘Ali, followed by that of Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall, the first translation by an English Muslim.  Yusuf ‘Ali’s translation is generally acceptable, but his footnote commentary, useful at times, can be odd and unacceptable.  Another widespread translation is done by Dr. Hilali and Muhsin Khan called ‘Interpretation of the Meaning of The Noble Quran.’  Although it is the most accurate, the many transliterated Arabic terms and endless parentheses make it hard to follow and confusing for a beginner.  A newer version with more flowing text has been published by Saheeh International, and this is probably a better translation, as it combines both exactness in translation and readability.

Exegesis ( Tafseer in Arabic)

Although the meanings of the Quran are easy and clear to understand, one must be careful to make assertions about the religion without relying on an authentic commentary.  Not only did Prophet Muhammad bring the Quran, he also explained it to his companions, and these sayings have been collected and preserved till this day.  God says:

"And We have sent down to you (O Muhammad) the message that you may explain clearly to men what is sent for them…" (Quran 16:44)

In order to understand some of the deeper meanings of the Quran, one should rely upon commentaries which mention these statements of the Prophet as well as his companions, and not upon what they understand from the text, as their understanding of it is limited to their prior knowledge.

A specific methodology exists for exegesis of the Quran in order to extract the proper meaning.  The Quranic sciences, as they are called, are an extremely specialized field of Islamic scholarship which requires mastery in multiple disciplines, like exegesis, recitations, script, inimitability, circumstances behind revelation, abrogation, Quranic grammar, unusual terms, religious rulings, and Arabic language and literature.  According to scholars of Quranic exegesis, the proper method of explaining the verses of Quran are:

(i)   Tafseer of the Quran by Quran.

(ii)  Tafseer of the Quran by the Sunna of the Prophet.

(iii) Tafseer of the Quran by the Companions.

(iv) Tafseer of the Quran by Arabic language.

(v)  Tafseer of the Quran by ‘opinion’, if it does not contradict the above four sources.

بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمنِ الرَّحِيمِ
يا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُواْ أَطِيعُواْ اللّهَ وَأَطِيعُواْ الرَّسُولَ وَأُوْلِي الأَمْرِ مِنكُ

"O ye who believed! Obey Allah, and obey the Apostle, and those charged with authority among you”. 1

('Those charged with authority'

are only the twelve sinless Imams (as) and; at the time of occultation, Sources of Imitation, who are learned, pious, and just, should be referred to.)

In 'Ikmal-ud-Din' a tradition, through 'Jabir-il-Ju'fi', is narrated from Jabir-ibn- Abdillah thus:

"O Messenger of Allah, we have known Allah and His Apostle; then who is 'Ulil-Amr', those that Allah has made their obedience the same as your obedience?'

Then, the Prophet (S) said:

'O Jabir! they are, after me, my successors and the Guides of Muslims; the first of them is Ali-ibn-Abi Talib; then (Imam) Hassan, and (Imam) Husain; then Ali-ibn-il-Husain; then Muhammad-ibn-Ali, known in the Torah as Baqir, whom you will see.

O Jabir! When you visit him, give my regards to him. After him, there is Sadiq, -Ja'far-ibn-Muhammad; and after him Musa-ibn-Ja'far; then Ali-ibn-Musa; then Muhammad-ibn-Ali; then Ali-ibn-Muhammad, then Hassan-ibn-Ali; and after him (there comes) Al-Gha'im whose name and sir-name is the same as mine. He is Allah's Authority on the Earth and His Remainder amongst His servants.

He is the son of (Imam) Hassan-ibn-Ali (a.-Askari). This is the very personality by whose hands Allah will open the Easts and Wests of the world.’ 2

قال الله تعالى: "وما ينطق عن الهوى إن هو إلا وحي يوحى"

"Nor does the Apostle speak out of desire. It is naught but revelation that is revealed" . 3

قال النبي (ص): "إني تارك فيكم التقلين، كتاب الله حبل ممدود من السماء إلى الأرض وعترتي أهل بيتي، وإن اللطيف الخبير أخبرني أنهما لن يفترقا حتى يردا علي الحوض فانظروا بماذا تخلفوني" وفي حديث آخر: "لن تضلوا ما إن تمسكتم بهما"

The Prophet (S) said:

"I leave behind me two weighty (very worthy and important) things:

The book of Allah (i.e. the Quran), which is a stretched string from the heaven to the earth, and my progeny, my Ahlul Bayt; for verily Allah, The Merciful, The Aware, informed me that never, never, will these Two get separated from each other until they meet me at the Houd of Kauthar (the Pond of Abundance).

Therefore, be careful and contemplate on how you will treat them (after me)”

...and in another tradition it is added:

"Never, never, shall you get astray if you attach yourself to these two”. 4

Abul-Hassan-ir-Rida (as) said:

"May the Mercy of Allah be upon the servant who Keeps alive our commandment".

I asked him (as) how the one could keep your commandment alive.

He (as) said:

"He (can) learn our sciences and teach them to people. In fact if people knew (the merits) and goodnesses of our speech, surely they would follow us.” 5

Manner and Forms of Revelation

which have no comparison in the English language

precise and specific meaning

as the Arabic language has an enormous breadth of vocabulary

the book which contains all knowledge of the universe

. This beautiful combination of literature has produced the most magnificent book in the world.

the Holy Qur’an has a specific characteristic, superiority and individuality compared to them

As well as being read and recited, the Qur’an acts as a practical guide in all affairs of Muslims, be they social, cultural, legal, economic or political

So the Qur’an is self-evident and self-explanatory. If one verse gives a general meaning than the other gives a more specific definition.

). This is so despite hundreds of attempts by non-Muslims to try and insert alterations and changes into the Qur’an. That is why Allah (swt) himself gives it divine protection:“We have, without doubt, sent down the message; And We will assuredly guard it (from corruption”. (15:9)

surahs and ayah’s of the Qur’an work in consistent harmony with each other. The Holy Qur’an is truly a uniform piece of work. In contrast the Encyclopaedia of America for example states that there are about 30,000 errors in the text of the bible and in its various versions. Although the accuracy of this type of observation is open to debate, what is clear is that any book that claims to be divinely revealed would surely not even entertain one error let alone hundreds or thousands of errors. The very nature of God, His Omnipotence, All Knowing and Most Powerful nature presupposes that His divinely given book would be clean of all mistakes. Indeed the Holy Qur’an is a living testament to that fact

The word Qur'an itself can be found in the scriptures:"We do relate unto you the most beautiful stories, in that We reveal to thee this (portion of the) Qur'an: Before this thou too was among those who knew it not." (Yusuf, 12:3)

So we sent this inspiration to the mother of Musa” (28:7)

) gave divine revelation to his Holy Prophet (saw) concerning the obligatory prayers.

into a permanent book form.

Hadrat Hafsah (rad).

(rad) for the original volume of the Qur’an promising to return it to her once copies were made. She sent it immediately to him.

(rad) then the relevant ayah should be written in the language of the Quraish as that was the tongue in which the Qur’an was revealed.

Hadrat Hafsah (rad). The new copies were then distributed to every Muslim province with the orders that all other copies of the Qur’an, be they full or partial copies, were to be burnt and replaced by this original one. Since that day the Holy Qurán has remained in its original pristine form and will remain as such in the future by the Grace and Blessings of Allah Almighty
