NEWS... BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT

Alexa, can you help me with my child’s homework?

Amazon Alexa smart assistant device connected at home

What did you do when you couldn’t solve a tricky maths equation?

Did you search for the answer on Google, skip doing the homework altogether and tell your teacher dog ate it, or watch as your parents asked Alexa for the answer?

As bizarre as it may sound, the latter scenario is happening at an alarming rate, as parents and grandparents struggle to help kids complete their homework – particularly mathematics.

There comes a time when homework becomes a little too advanced for parents to help with, especially as many forget how to do tricky long divisions, algebra or the names of all the triangles once they finish school . With over 500 million Alexa-enabled devices sold worldwide, people are using technology to their advantage when it comes to maths.

New data commissioned by the Department for Education ’s Skills for Life campaign and Kindred found that 54% of parents would say they ‘would struggle to know where to start’ if left to their own decisions when helping children with their maths homework.

The Skills for Life campaign is encouraging adults of all ages to up their skills and learn something new, and to boost their confidence when helping their children at home and potentially improve their own career prospects.

Of the 2,250 adults surveyed, 69% said they use the internet to help solve schoolwork problems and 20% reported using virtual assistants, like Alexa and Google Assistant, to help tutor their kids at home. Maths was revealed to cause the most angst and was voted the least favourite homework subject among parents and grandparents.

Rear view of girl writing homework on table while sitting at home

The data comes as education groups raise concerns about the growing use of AI in students’ work. Asking a virtual assistant for help on a task you plan to finish yourself is quite different to asking ChatGPT to come up with the answers for you, it raises questions about how much we rely on technology.

A 16-year-old student identified only as Fiore previously told Metro.co.uk that he turned to ChatGPT when he realised an English essay was due the next day. It’s 2024 after all, and his story serves as a stark reminder that the days of cramming the assignment into an all-nighter or turning to SparkNotes for help are long gone.

Although many people would fear plagiarism detectors or eagle-eyed lecturers spotting AI-generated essays , the student wasn’t afraid about being caught.

However, not all students are using AI to cheat and not all are using ChatGPT, with some turning to Gemini, which was developed by Google. Chatbots have also been found to be helpful for students with dyslexia when it comes to comprehending in-depth academic texts.

Jane Basnett, director of digital learning at Downe House School in Berkshire admits that homework can be tricky for parents. ‘In the old days, parents turned to the Encyclopaedia Britannica to find responses, visited the library with their child or they asked a more informed friend,’ she told Metro.co.uk. ‘They had conversations and made discoveries about different topics that perhaps they had not known about before.’

This practice, however, has changed drastically now that technology is just one tap, swipe or voice command away. ‘Finding the knowledge is one thing, understanding it and engaging with it properly is another.

‘Parents need to encourage their child to understand the GenAI output and to put their own responses together.

‘These are just the sort of conversations that teachers are having with their students in classrooms across the country. Gen AI (generative artificial intelligence) is a tool that can very quickly do your homework for you but in doing so, it takes away the key important elements of education: learning, discovering and critical thinking.’

One dad, Paul Duggan, 68, from London made a huge life change after realising he couldn’t help his daughter with her homework. He completed a Skills for Life Numeracy course in 2020, when his daughter Rebecca was 10, after she inspired him to sign up.

He has since gone on to achieve a Functional Skills qualification in maths, which is equivalent to a Maths GCSE.

‘I always had a difficult relationship with maths,’ he said. ‘I think a lot of people do. When my daughter, Rebecca, started needing more help with her homework I realised that if I didn’t tackle my fear of numbers now, not only would I be unable to help, but I’d also risk passing on my negative relationship with maths, which I certainly didn’t want to do.’

Not all parents will be able to find the time to brush up on their maths skills, as they often have to balance full-time jobs, the needs of other children, the cost of living and general life stuff. But for those like Paul who could, it has proven to be invaluable.

‘Signing up to the Skills for Life course was honestly one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. It’s helped boost my confidence with everyday sums, and I’ve also grown a lot closer to my daughter, Rebecca, in the process, helping her solve equations and more complex problems as she studies for her maths GSCE.’

Girls are getting their first periods earlier. Here’s what parents should know

Researchers say multiple factors are likely impacting early puberty, including obesity, stress and endocrine-disrupting hormones which are widespread in the environment.

Girls in the U.S. are getting their first menstrual period about 6 months earlier on average than they did in the 1950s and '60s. And more girls are beginning menstruation before the age of 9, which is considered a very early age. That's according to a large new study published this week in the journal JAMA Network Open.

"It's important to educate caregivers, parents and care providers on this trend so that we can also prepare our children," says Dr. Shruthi Mahalingaiah, the study's co-author and an assistant professor of environmental, reproductive, and women's health at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

“The younger you are when you get your first period, it's very confusing. There's still a lot of stigma and silence around it,” Mahalingaiah says.

The study is based on data collected from more than 71,000 women enrolled through the Apple Research App on their iPhones, who were asked to recall when they first started menstruating. The researchers found that on average, menstruation was starting at 11.9 years of age in 2000 to 2005. That’s down from 12.5 years of age in the period between 1950 to 1969.

What’s more, the percentage of girls getting their period before the age of 11 grew from 8.6% to 15.5 %, and those who began menstruation before age 9 more than doubled.

The study found this trend toward earlier periods across all demographics, but it was much more pronounced among girls from racial and ethnic minorities and those from lower incomes.

Researchers say understanding changing trends in menstruation is important, because menstruation is a vital sign for health.

"The age at which someone starts their periods is kind of a barometer of how they're doing in general," says Lauren Houghton, an assistant professor at epidemiology at Columbia University who wrote a commentary accompanying the new study.

The study also found more girls are taking longer to reach regular menstrual cycles. Irregular menstrual cycles are associated with several health conditions, including polycystic ovary syndrome, or PCOS. And an earlier age of first menstruation is linked to several adverse health outcomes, including a higher risk of cardiovascular risk, obesity, miscarriage and early death. It’s also linked to several cancers, including ovarian, endometrial and breast cancer.

“If someone reaches their first period before the age of 12, they are at a 20% increased risk for breast cancer,” Houghton says.

When you take a look at populations, that becomes a very important public health issue, says Dr Frank Biro, a clinician and researcher at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, whose work focuses on factors behind changes in puberty and related health risks.

Biro points to other research that has found that around the world, girls have been developing breast buds – usually the earliest sign of puberty – six to 12 months earlier than they used to. Coupled with the dropping age of first menstruation, he says, “in the next decade or two, one would anticipate that there could be a rise in new cases of breast cancer.”

Why is this happening?

So what’s behind the changing timing of menstruation and puberty?

“When we're looking for causes or explanations, it's not just one thing. It's multiple factors,” Houghton says.

For example, obesity is known to raise the risk of early puberty in girls, and childhood obesity rates have been rising. But Houghton notes that stress is also a known factor, and the two could be intertwined.

"When we have higher stress we get higher cortisol hormones, we get higher androgen hormones," Hougton explains. "And fat tissue converts those hormones into estrogen. And it's estrogen which signals the body to grow breasts. " Changes in estrogen levels also signal the body to start menstruation.

Endocrine-disrupting chemicals that are widespread in the environment also likely play a role. For example, phthalates – a class of chemicals that are common in many cosmetic and personal care products – are known to interfere with hormones. Some air pollutants are also known to disrupt the endocrine system.

So what can concerned parents do?

Making sure kids eat a healthy diet – with plenty of fruits and vegetables – can help moderate some of the risk factors for earlier puberty and menstruation, researchers say. Regular physical activity is also important. Getting enough sleep can also help – some studies have linked later bedtimes and shorter sleep duration to earlier puberty.

Mahalingaiah would also like to see parents prepare themselves, and their children, for the fact that menstruation might come sooner than they expected, so when the time comes, they are mentally ready.

  • Israeli forces seize control over Gaza’s border with Egypt with heavy fighting under way as troops push deeper into the civilian-packed west of Rafah city.
  • At least 25 Palestinians are killed in incessant Israeli drone, artillery, and air strikes throughout the war-battered territory.
  • The UN’s World Food Programme calls for an immediate truce in Gaza and warns that its ability to help the starving and desperate people there is fading fast with “Rafah on fire”.
  • At least 36,171 Palestinians have been killed and 81,420 wounded in Israel’s war on Gaza since October 7. The death toll in Israel from Hamas’s attack is at least 1,139, with dozens of people still held captive in Gaza.

  • At least 31 Palestinians were killed across Gaza, with 21 killed in Israel’s ongoing assault on the southern city of Rafah.
  • Israel’s military said it has taken “operational control” of the Philadelphi Corridor between Gaza and Egypt, in a move experts say increases the chance of escalation.

Israeli drones open fire on fleeing Palestinians in Rafah

Rafah residents say Israeli tanks pushed into Tal as-Sultan in the west along with Yibna and near Shaboura in the centre of the southernmost Gaza city.

They later retreated towards a buffer zone on the border with Egypt, rather than staying put as they have in other offensives.

“We received distress calls from residents in Tal as-Sultan where drones targeted displaced citizens as they moved from areas where they were staying toward the safe areas,” said Haitham al-Hams, deputy director of ambulance and emergency services in Rafah.

Health Minister Majed Abu Raman urged the United States to pressure Israel to open the Rafah crossing to aid, saying there was no indication Israeli authorities will do so soon and patients in besieged Gaza are dying from lack of treatment.

Open letter by Gaza academics and university administrators to the world

We have come together as Palestinian academics and staff of Gaza universities to affirm our existence, the existence of our colleagues and our students, and the insistence on our future, in the face of all current attempts to erase us.

The Israeli occupation forces have demolished our buildings but our universities live on. We reaffirm our collective determination to remain on our land and to resume teaching, study, and research in Gaza, at our own Palestinian universities, at the earliest opportunity.

We call upon our friends and colleagues around the world to resist the ongoing campaign of scholasticide in occupied Palestine, to work alongside us in rebuilding our demolished universities, and to refuse all plans seeking to bypass, erase, or weaken the integrity of our academic institutions.

The future of our young people in Gaza depends upon us, and our ability to remain on our land in order to continue to serve the coming generations of our people.

Israeli military says two killed in car ramming near nablus.

The vehicle attack occurred near an illegal Israeli settlement outside of the occupied West Bank city.

The military later told the AFP news agency that “two Israeli citizens were killed”. A manhunt is under way after the attacker escaped the scene.

Israeli army and settler attacks in the occupied West Bank have killed more than 500 Palestinians since October 7 when the war on Gaza began.

Hamas welcomed the attack near Nablus, saying in a statement it was a “natural response” against the “crimes of the enemy”.

Israel’s defence chief threatens Lebanon with ‘harsh reality’

Israel’s army has killed 320 Hezbollah fighters since October 8 in cross-border attacks, Defence Minister Yoav Gallant says.

He made the claim during a televised news conference following an “operational assessment” of the Northern Command. Gallant accused Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah of dragging Lebanon into a “harsh reality”.

“The ones who will pay the price are the residents of Lebanon and Hezbollah forces,” said Gallant, showing images purportedly of dead Hezbollah fighters.

Tension has flared along the border between Lebanon and Israel since the war on Gaza began, in the deadliest clashes since the two sides fought a full-scale war in 2006.

US destroys two missile launchers in Houthi-controlled Yemen

The strikes took place at 8:40pm local time (17:40 GMT)  on Tuesday, according to US Central Command.

Earlier today, US forces also “successfully destroyed two uncrewed aerial systems [UAS] over the Red Sea launched from a Houthi-controlled area of Yemen”, CENTCOM said.

“It was determined these missiles and systems presented an imminent threat to US, coalition forces, and merchant vessels in the region,” the command said. “These actions are taken to protect freedom of navigation and make international waters safer and more secure.”

In December 2023, the US launched a multinational Red Sea force as Houthi attacks in support of Gaza increased along the arterial shipping route.

At approximately 8:40 p.m. (Sanaa time) May 28, U.S. Central Command (USCENTCOM) forces successfully destroyed two missile launchers in an Iranian-backed Houthi-controlled area of Yemen. Biden’s red lines for Israel ‘maybe simply don’t actually exist’

US political analyst Eli Clifton says the Biden administration’s continued support for Israel despite recent deadly attacks on Rafah raises a stark question about the American president’s Middle East policies.

“It’s becoming increasingly clear that the Biden White House is either uninterested in enforcing any red lines on Israel, or that these red lines maybe simply don’t actually exist,” Clifton, a senior adviser at the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft, told Al Jazeera.

He added that there are two reasons underlying Biden’s stance.

“On the domestic political front, there is a fear of offending voters and donors, coming into what’s going to be a hotly contested American presidential election” in November, Clifton said.

“But there’s also the strategic reason that undergirds this and which is very consistent across administrations of doubling down on what is arguably a failed strategy of embracing the Israelis, embracing Netanyahu, closely – with the belief that by doing so, one can influence their decision-making.”

Is Israel acting like the ICC is ‘only for Africa and thugs like Putin’?

Simon Speakman Cordall

Israel’s isolation appears to be growing amid rising criticism following the deadly strike on a camp for displaced people in Rafah on Sunday and a subsequent attack on Tuesday.

Two international legal developments in the last week at the International Criminal Court (ICC) and the World Court have also divided the international community.

“The values that underlie the ICC do not allow for one set of rules for democratically elected leaders and another set of rules for everyone else,” said Michael Becker, professor of international human rights law at Trinity College, Dublin.

Israel’s attack on Gaza: ‘Designated 2024 as a year of war’

A top Israeli official says Israel’s war on Gaza is likely to last through the end of the year – a grim prediction for a conflict that has killed tens of thousands, deepened Israel’s global isolation, and brought the region to the brink of a wider conflagration.

National Security Adviser Tzachi Hanegbi told Kan public radio he’s “expecting another seven months of fighting” to destroy the military and governing capabilities of Hamas and the smaller Palestinian Islamic Jihad armed group.

“The army is achieving its objectives,” but it said from the start the “war will be long. They have designated 2024 as a year of war”.

UNRWA head hails EU foreign policy chief’s pledge of support

The commissioner general of the embattled UN agency thanked the EU’s Josep Borrell for “his compassion and unwavering support”.

The message came following a meeting between the two officials, in which Borrell pledged continued financial and political support from EU member states. He also said the European Union rejects attempts to label the agency a “terrorist organisation” – as Israel’s Knesset sought to do earlier in the week.

Lazzarini said he shared with Borrell: “How the civilian population social fabric has been destroyed in #Gaza & the risk of sowing hatred for the generation to come. I thanked him for his compassion & unwavering support to the @UNRWA mission in favour of #Palestine refugees.”

Canadian lawyers, professors urge Trudeau to enforce possible ICC arrest warrants

Hundreds of lawyers, professors, civil society leaders and former diplomats are urging Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to commit to enforcing any arrest warrants that may be issued by the International Criminal Court.

The ICC’s chief prosecutor last week requested arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu and Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, as well as three senior Hamas leaders, on war crimes allegations.

In their letter to Trudeau, the experts asked the prime minister “to issue a public statement unequivocally affirming the prosecutorial and judicial independence of the Court as the investigations and proceedings advance in the situation in Palestine”.

That should include, they said, “a clear statement that any arrest warrants issued by the Court against leaders of the Israeli government and senior Hamas officials will be enforced should any suspects arrive on Canadian territory”.

LISTEN: ‘All eyes on Rafah’ – A viral social trend on Israel’s war

An artificial intelligence-generated image with the text “All eyes on Rafah” is dominating social media discourse on Israel’s war on Gaza.

It has been re-shared on more than 40 million Instagram stories since Monday as Israel’s deadly offensive on Gaza’s Rafah continues.

The AI image might be more palatable to some viewers than real photos of Gaza, which often show blood, bodies and violence during Israel’s war on the Palestinian territory.

‘Genocidal anti-Palestinian racist’: CAIR condemns Nikki Haley scrawl on Israeli bomb

The Council on American-Islamic Relations did not mince words in its condemnation of Haley, a former US ambassador to the UN and defunct Republican presidential candidate, after she visited Israel and wrote on an artillery shell destined for Gaza, “Finish them”.

“Only a genocidal anti-Palestinian racist could sign ‘finish them’ on the same type of artillery shells that the Israeli government has used to slaughter innocent Palestinians for months,” CAIR director of government affairs Robert McCaw said in a statement.

Amnesty International USA also condemned Haley’s action, a photo of which has widely circulated on social media.

“Conflict is no place for stunts. Conflict has rules. Civilians must be protected,” the organisation wrote on X.

Israel using tunnel claims to ‘justify’ Rafah offensive

Israel is using claims of tunnels under Egypt’s border with Gaza as cover for its Rafah offensive, the state-linked Al-Qahera News reports, citing a “high-level Egyptian source”.

“There is no truth to Israeli media reports of the existence of tunnels on the Egyptian border with Gaza,” the source told Al-Qahera, which is linked to state intelligence.

“Israel is using these allegations to justify continuing the operation on the Palestinian city of Rafah and prolonging the war for political purposes.”

Al-Qahera News reported there are “no communications with the Israeli side” on the allegations of finding tunnels on the borders. Egypt has repeatedly expressed concerns the Israeli offensive could push Palestinians across the border – a scenario Egypt says is completely unacceptable.

Police use tear gas at pro-Palestine protest in Paris

Video posted on social media shows police in riot gear pushing into protesters.

The clashes came as protesters marched down the Rue de la Pepiniere in the northwest of the city.

Protesters had also taken to the streets of Paris yesterday in response to the recent Israeli attack on Rafah that killed civilians.

Demonstrators demanding return of captives block road in Tel Aviv

Israeli media reports and social media posts show the crowd of people entering blocking a highway, demanding progress from the Israeli government on a deal with Hamas to bring back Israeli captives held in Gaza.

Negotiations have been stalled for months as Hamas and Israeli officials trade blame for a deal failing to materialise. Israeli media reports said that talks were to begin again in Cairo today, however, a Hamas official said that “we do not need new negotiations,” adding that the group has already agreed to a ceasefire proposal that Israel rejected.

The footage shows protesters blocking a road and holding up a huge banner that reads: “Kidnapped alive are left to die”.

More US lawmakers urge Biden to end support for Israel’s Gaza war

US President Joe Biden faces growing pressure domestically, including from members of his own Democratic Party, to stop providing unconditional backing for Israel as the country launches deadly attacks on Rafah and other parts of Gaza.

Democratic Congresswoman Bonnie Watson Coleman is the latest to join a chorus of calls from Congress members to end US support for Israel’s war.

“We are way past the red line,” she said on X. “We cannot continue supporting this. Nobody is safer because of this.”

US Senator Chris Van Hollen also told CNN that the US “can and should be using more leverage” with its top ally.

“The United States taxpayers have funded billions of dollars of weapons that have gone to the Netanyahu government, so it is time for the Biden administration to exercise more leverage to achieve the president’s own stated goals,” Van Hollen said.

We are way past the red line. The recent strikes on a Palestinian refugee camp, which killed dozens — including children burned alive in their tents — are unconscionable. We cannot continue supporting this. Nobody is safer because of this. — Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman (@RepBonnie) May 29, 2024

Two paramedics killed in Israeli bombing of ambulance in Rafah: PRCS

The Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) has now confirmed that two paramedics were killed in the attack in Rafah’s Tal as-Sultan area.

The PRCS said Israeli forces carried out a “direct bombing” of the ambulance, killing paramedics Haitham Tubasi and Suhail Hassouna.

The Israeli military has not yet commented on the incident.

EU’s foreign policy chief assures UNRWA head of full support

Josep Borrell says on X that he met today with Philippe Lazzarini of the UN’s Palestinian refugee agency (UNRWA), assuring him of the EU’s continued financial support to the agency, which was hit hard after donor states suspended funding to it earlier this year when Israel accused several of its staff members of participating in the October 7 Hamas attacks on Israel.

“[EU member states] resumed their financial support. The next tranche of EU funding is on its way”, Borrell wrote.

Israel did present credible evidence to support its claims that UNRWA staff were members of “terrorist” groups, an independent review for the United Nations led by a former French foreign minister said in late April.

Borrell also said that the EU rejects “any attempt to label UNRWA as a terrorist organisation”, which the Israeli parliament, called the Knesset, moved to do two days ago.

“[UNRWA] remains an indispensable life line to Palestinians”, Borrell added.

I reiterated him the EU support to @UNRWA praising its work & team. MS resumed their financial support. The next tranche of EU funding is on its way. We reject any attempt to label UNRWA as a terrorist organisation. It remains an indispensable life line to Palestinians. 2/2 — Josep Borrell Fontelles (@JosepBorrellF) May 29, 2024

Syria state news agency says child killed in ‘Israeli aggression’

Syrian Arab New Agency (SANA) said Israel attacks targeted a site in the country’s central region and a residential building in the Mediterranean coastal city of Baniyas.

One girl was killed in Baniyas and 10 others were injured, according to SANA. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a UK-based group, also reported the death.

It said Israel had attacked Syrian territory at least 42 times since the beginning of the year.

Israeli army says it struck Hezbollah ‘infrastructure’ in southern Lebanon

The military says its fighter jets carried out attacks on Hezbollah “infrastructure” in southern Lebanon’s Khiam area.

The army also said it carried out artillery attacks in other parts of southern Lebanon.

Israel and the Lebanese group Hezbollah have exchanged cross-border attacks since the Gaza war began, raising concerns about a wider escalation.
