Fine Dinning vs. Fast Food The experience of working in the restaurant business can vary greatly depending on the type of restaurant it is. Although, there is thought put into the preparation of food in every restaurant; the systems by which this is done are very different. The two main types of restaurants in this world are Fine Dining and Fast Food.

When walking into a fast food joint or a “fancy” restaurant people expect to order their food, wait for it to be prepared, then eat and leave. Unless they have had experience working in a kitchen; most people do not know what goes on behind the scenes. When it comes to fast food there is not much prep work that has to be done. Most of a fast food restaurants product is delivered frozen and just needs to be cooked and thrown together. Where as a more of an upper class restaurant where they get most of their product delivered fresh. Also depending on what type of restaurant it is (Italian, Greek, Chinese, etc.) they usually season their product to their own recipes.

People go to fast food restaurants just for that; it is fast and cheap. They do not really look at how the food is presented to them. They just want it to be fast so they can eat and get back to whatever they were doing. This can make things in the kitchen very hectic. When there is ten to twenty orders coming in at one time things can get confusing. Most fast food places use a type of assembly line to help cut down on time and confusion. For example, at The Clock of Williamston, there are five positions on the back line.

The food that needs to be cooked, is either cooked on the grill or in a deep fryer, and then brought to the middle of the line where it is put together to make plates. (Putting sides with main item) Because they want to be fast; most items on a fast food restaurants menu are not going to be healthy. Their food is usually loaded down with grease and fat.

Now at a “fancy” restaurant, everything is different. First, when people come to these restaurants they are not looking for it to be fast. Usually they come to sit down, get comfortable, and spend time with their family or significant other. This changes the whole mentality of the way the kitchen works. When working in this kind of restaurant, they try to put more time into making every plate perfect and appealing to the costumer. There is still a sense of try to be fast and get the food out but it isn’t as strong as in a fast food restaurant.

At Milanos Greek and Italian restaurant; it only takes two people to run the kitchen. One person runs the grill and the sandwiches, while the other works the oven. All the food still gets pushed to the middle where it meets to be prepared for the ticket then pushed out the window to the waiting staff. Since their ingredients are delivered fresh, this makes the prices of the food go up.

To work in either one of these types of restaurants people have to like preparing food, or they probably will not last very long in the kitchen. With working at a “fancy” restaurant the cook can take his or her time; make the plate perfect and then push it out. This is a lot less stressful than working at a fast food place. When working with fast food the cook can get very stressed after reading through two hundred tickets in a hour, and a lot of times has to take a break from cooking to go clear his or hers mind. Even though both find dining and fast food restaurants have the same concept of preparing food to be sold to the public for a profit; there are many differences when you start to look at the way the food is prepared and presented. Costumers do not usually think about the amount of effort that goes into their food when they go out to eat.

What is fine dining.

An elegant restaurant experience with great quality of food and atmosphere is considered to be fine dining. There are certain etiquette rules in fine dining that are mandatory to be followed by both customers and staff.

It is a formal process of serving the food that provides an extraordinary experience to the people.

There is even a dress code in particular restaurants for both staff and visitors. Fine dining restaurants are completely different from basic restaurants with sophisticated and expensive experiences.

The food that requires a convenient process to be prepared and offered by restaurants and snack bars are known as fast food. It is also referred to be a quick meal and junk food.

The type of production of fast food is designated to be mass-produced. Fast food is prepared to be sold out and it is based on the speed of service.

Fast food was invented to help the wage workers, travelers, and busy people who didn’t have enough time to cook meals for themselves or sit in a diner and wait for hours.

The only restriction imposed upon fast food is the speed of service which means it should reach the person within a certain period.

This strategy worked out so well that the fast food industry was estimated to be worth thousands of billions in 2018. Over the past decades, fast food has become a salient part of daily routine in urban areas.

But it can be harmful to one’s health since they are made of using unhealthy ingredients that have plenty of calories and saturated fat.

Although fast food is affordable and requires no hard work, it is still not recommendable to be included in daily routine. Fast foods are extremely addictive and they can affect one’s physical health negatively.

Globalization of American Fast-Food Chains: the Pinnacle of Effective Management and Adaptability

When we talk about American food, we talk about hamburgers, hotdogs, fries: foods that have been purposefully made to suit everyone’s taste. There are no exotic spices, risky recipes, or unconventional combinations of ingredients. American food does not have any exceptional characteristics, and still, it has managed to take over some of the most renowned cuisines in the food world. What drives Western food industry’s global success if not the uniqueness and quality of its products?

Most of us are already aware of the immense popularity that companies like McDonalds and KFC have gained over the past few decades. What is interesting, however, is how nonselective they are in their expansionist approaches. Such chains have found a way to thrive on any land they step on and in any culture they enter. From Western Europe through the Middle East and all the way to East Asia, fast-food companies have taken less than 30 years to establish themselves as the dominant power in the food market. The massive trend of globalization that the world has experienced in recent times is well reflected in the globalization of food, but what does it take for these globalizing economies to become so successful abroad?

It takes “glocalization” – a process of adapting to local demands and preferences while also operating on the global scene. The term “glocalization” originated in Japan, where it was used to describe the agricultural practice of adapting to local conditions. However, it has recently been re-adopted by business people and has been used to challenge the simplicity of a simple globalization strategy. “Glocalization” brings the process of international expansion to a higher level. It encaptures the success of worldwide businesses who have managed to adapt to foreign cultures and societies; the most familiar example is the American fast-food industry.

Western companies have taken pride in their ability to acclimate to distant parts of the world. Coca-Cola’s personal statement, “We are not multinational, we are multilocal,” is reflective of American fast-food chains’ pursuit of transnational integration. They portray their goal not to be introducing American food to the foreign cuisine, but rather introducing the foreign cuisine to American food. Products are designed specifically to appeal to local tastes by taking into account various cultural factors – religious beliefs, traditions, gender roles, folklore, etc. Companies wish to counteract people’s doubtful approach towards unfamiliar foods, practices and cultures by showing that they are there to adapt rather than enforce change. Such notions appear a bit idealistic, and fast-food chains’ presence in non-Western cultures in the past few decades has shown that adaptation is not one-sided but, instead, is working both ways.

Companies like McDonalds, KFC, and Dunkin Donuts have become an integral part of places with no previous exposure to the Western world. Such success stories require deep understanding of local tastes and preferences. Fast-food chains face the challenge of making hamburgers and french fries appear more attractive than the food people had been eating their whole life. Western food companies have now broken into the three most renowned cuisines in the world – Turkish, French and Chinese. A royal kitchen, long dynastical history, and access to fresh ingredients and various spices are among the reasons these countries turned into culinary giants. Their fame is built on their cuisine’s unique identity and the variety of cooking techniques – the complete opposite of what defines American fast-food. And still the merge of those two – a traditional, extraordinary flavor and a generic, all-appealing taste — seems to produce the biggest success.

Due to the country’s rich history and the various migrations of its people throughout the years, Turkish cuisine has become the epitome of multiculturalism. The combination of Turk, Ottoman, Arabic, Greek, and Persian influences has resulted in a diversity of ingredients and flavors which characterize the Turkish kebabs, meze, dolmas, and pastries. One of the most important reasons that Turkey is a world culinary giant is the country’s access to fresh fruits, vegetables, meats, and other foods. Thus, a game-changing glocalizing strategy for the McDonald’s restaurants, which started opening doors on Turkish territory in the 80s, has been the switch to purchasing products from local food suppliers. Between the years 2000 and 2016, the fast-food company’s profits in the country increased more than 10 times, along with a 25% increase in locally supplied ingredients. Moreover, in 2000 McDonald’s menu incorporated a only one Turkish dish; by 2016, there were eight dishes. Such change was triggered by the downfall of the chain’s business in the year 2002, when 60 of its restaurants were forced to shut down due to a major decrease in demand.

Mangal and Kofte Burger are among the most popular glocalized foods that McDonald’s has introduced on the Turkish market. The creation of those products portrays the globalization of the concept of an American burger and the localization of its individual components. A marketing strategy of this kind assures the consumer that Western chains can be a perfect fit for the local cuisine. According to Mehmed Can Olgac, a first-year student from Turkey, fast-food has even managed to escape restaurant places and enter one’s house. Turkish supermarkets started selling frozen burger patties for people to prepare at home. When asked whether American food suits the Turkish cuisine, only 20% of the participants in the survey conducted answered with a definite “No” compared to 56% who said “Yes.”

The integration of Western fast-food chains into the non-Western world has not been welcomed by all nations. Unlike the Turkish population, the majority of the French population perceives the immense popularity of American companies as a threat to the country’s identity. France has long taken pride in its cuisine; French dining memorializes specific recipes and dining habits that have been passed down from generation to generation. In France, children become the subject of “palate” training, an appreciation for high-quality food, as early as the age of three. Building proper eating habits is an integral part of one’s upbringing. Characteristic of French food etiquette is the tendency to set aside long periods of time for individual meals. Thus, the whole nature of French dining has been reformed by the newly arisen possibility of grabbing a quick, affordable, and very low-effort lunch from the nearest “viennoiserie” (bakery). The French created their own version of fast-food corners where one could either sit in or walk away with a baguette sandwich in hand. Such places set the scene for what was to be introduced by Western economies in the 80s.

With the appearance and growing abundance of American fast-food chains in Paris, the goal of marketing strategies was not only to integrate French products into the American menu, but also to make Western companies appear as the most local of all. French people express extreme pride in their heritage and rich culture. Thus, any foreign influence would generally be rejected. Taking this into account, advertising techniques of Western food chains were designed to appeal to as many characteristics of French cuisine as possible – from the love of salads to the resentment of genetically modified food. When asked about what lies behind the global success of fast-food chains, Professor Olav Sorenson from the School of Management acknowledged the industry’s effort to sell the image of America abroad. The way the American image was presented, however, was not as a distant unfamiliar concept but rather as a part of the local world. McDonald’s created the slogan “McDonald’s. Born in the USA. Made in France” to show the public that the two places can go hand in hand.

Introducing the McRoyale and Filet-o-Fish turned out to be insufficient, and new techniques were adopted to imitate the French atmosphere. Fast-food chains revolutionized the whole interior space of their restaurants, integrating works of art as wall decor and switching traditional pieces of furniture to unconventional ones. One of McDonald’s franchisees in Toulouse replaced the normal bar stools with bicycle seats to appeal to the French sense of aesthetics. Later on, the American chain went as far as to switch its most distinctive and representative figure, Ronald McDonald, to the French comic character “Asterix.” Such fundamental changes to the company’s character is proof of its determination to do whatever it takes to reach success on the global scene, putting no limits to its marketing enterprises.

The growth of Western companies in China is an example of the two-sided process of adaptation and localization when it comes to expansion abroad. On the one hand, a lot of McDonald’s and KFC’s marketing strategies aimed at addressing current trends in the Chinese society. The image of cleanliness and high levels of hygiene that such companies brought from the West was a major factor in their initial popularity. Domestic businesses in China did not pay attention to the experience they provide their customers. Hongxi Yang, a medical graduate exchange student from China, reports that the difference between the two is seen even in the packages which were used for takeout food. Moreover, Western fast-food restaurants were choosing much more strategic locations, and their close proximity to populated business areas made them more convenient for the white-collar worker.

The good service and friendly environment made Chinese families pick restaurants such as KFC when they went out. With the enforcement of the one-child policy, children became the focus of attention in Chinese society. Following this trend, Western fast-food chains redesigned their marketing strategies to target parents, and the youth became their highest priority customers. KFC restaurants renovated the space to include smaller chairs and lower counters; they introduced playground areas and started offering the option of birthday celebrations. The company also collaborated with schools to cater during sporting events and came up with the idea of using “Chicky” – a chicken kids character – as its Chinese mascot.

Despite the various Chinese characteristics that fast-food chains adopted to succeed in the local environment, their image remained primarily Western, causing significant cultural changes among the population. Local customers lost a part of their Chinese identity as they experienced major shifts in dietary habits. Chopsticks were no longer the primary eating tool, snacks took over proper meals, and leaving right after one is finished eating slowly became the norm. The growth of Western economies homogenized Chinese culture to the extent that it introduced global dietary standards that have been unfamiliar before; at the same time, they heterogenized global products to fit Chinese preferences. Is food globalization a form of cultural imperialism?  It’s hard to say.

The success of fast-food chains abroad and the marketing techniques used to appeal to the local population show a great understanding of what customers desire. Companies created products that were the perfect mixture of the glamorous image of the Western world and the traditional cuisine. Restaurant spaces were designed to reflect the local taste and, at the same time, provide what local industries could not. Advertisements aimed at presenting global companies as fully suiting the local environments, and the immense fame they gained, proves the notion that one piece, with slight alterations, can fit all. Whether globalization of food industries brought cultures together or simply allowed America to enter all other cultures and leave a permanent mark is a difficult question. Homogenization of eating habits and cuisines has been the natural result of the emerging transnational business practices. It is plausible that years from now, there will not be any distinguished culinary giants, but rather one global cuisine – a melting pot of culinary influences from all across the Earth. Each country will then have to adapt to the global eating culture, instead of the other way around.

THE PURPOSE OF COMPARISON AND CONTRAST IN WRITING

Comparison in writing discusses elements that are similar, while contrast in writing discusses elements that are different. A compare-and-contrast essay, then, analyzes two subjects by comparing them, contrasting them, or both.

The key to a good compare-and-contrast essay is to choose two or more subjects that connect in a meaningful way. The purpose of conducting the comparison or contrast is not to state the obvious but rather to illuminate subtle differences or unexpected similarities. For example, if you wanted to focus on contrasting two subjects you would not pick apples and oranges; rather, you might choose to compare and contrast two types of oranges or two types of apples to highlight subtle differences. For example, Red Delicious apples are sweet, while Granny Smiths are tart and acidic. Drawing distinctions between elements in a similar category will increase the audience’s understanding of that category, which is the purpose of the compare-and-contrast essay.

Similarly, to focus on comparison, choose two subjects that seem at first to be unrelated. For a comparison essay, you likely would not choose two apples or two oranges because they share so many of the same properties already. Rather, you might try to compare how apples and oranges are quite similar. The more divergent the two subjects initially seem, the more interesting a comparison essay will be.

WRITING AT WORK

Comparing and contrasting is also an evaluative tool. In order to make accurate evaluations about a given topic, you must first know the critical points of similarity and difference. Comparing and contrasting is a primary tool for many workplace assessments. You have likely compared and contrasted yourself to other colleagues. Employee advancements, pay raises, hiring, and firing are typically conducted using comparison and contrast. Comparison and contrast could be used to evaluate companies, departments, or individuals.

Brainstorm an essay that leans toward contrast. Choose one of the following three categories. Pick two examples from each. Then come up with one similarity and three differences between the examples.

THE STRUCTURE OF A COMPARISON AND CONTRAST ESSAY

The compare-and-contrast essay starts with a thesis that clearly states the two subjects that are to be compared, contrasted, or both and the reason for doing so. The thesis could lean more toward comparing, contrasting, or both. Remember, the point of comparing and contrasting is to provide useful knowledge to the reader. Take the following thesis as an example that leans more toward contrasting.

Thesis statement: Organic vegetables may cost more than those that are conventionally grown, but when put to the test, they are definitely worth every extra penny.

Here the thesis sets up the two subjects to be compared and contrasted (organic versus conventional vegetables), and it makes a claim about the results that might prove useful to the reader.

You may organize compare-and-contrast essays in one of the following two ways:

  • According to the subjects themselves, discussing one then the other
  • According to individual points, discussing each subject in relation to each point

Given that compare-and-contrast essays analyze the relationship between two subjects, it is helpful to have some phrases on hand that will cue the reader to such analysis. See Table 10.3 “Phrases of Comparison and Contrast” for examples.

Create an outline for each of the items you chose in Exercise 1 & 2. Use the point-by-point organizing strategy for one of them, and use the subject organizing strategy for the other.

WRITING A COMPARISON AND CONTRAST ESSAY

First choose whether you want to compare seemingly disparate subjects, contrast seemingly similar subjects, or compare and contrast subjects. Once you have decided on a topic, introduce it with an engaging opening paragraph. Your thesis should come at the end of the introduction, and it should establish the subjects you will compare, contrast, or both as well as state what can be learned from doing so.

The body of the essay can be organized in one of two ways: by subject or by individual points. The organizing strategy that you choose will depend on, as always, your audience and your purpose. You may also consider your particular approach to the subjects as well as the nature of the subjects themselves; some subjects might better lend themselves to one structure or the other. Make sure to use comparison and contrast phrases to cue the reader to the ways in which you are analyzing the relationship between the subjects.

After you finish analyzing the subjects, write a conclusion that summarizes the main points of the essay and reinforces your thesis. 

Many business presentations are conducted using comparison and contrast. The organizing strategies—by subject or individual points—could also be used for organizing a presentation. Keep this in mind as a way of organizing your content the next time you or a colleague have to present something at work.

Choose one of the outlines you created in Exercise 3, and write a full compare-and-contrast essay. Be sure to include an engaging introduction, a clear thesis, well-defined and detailed paragraphs, and a fitting conclusion that ties everything together.

The Purpose of Comparison and Contrast in Writing

Comparison in writing discusses elements that are similar, while contrast in writing discusses elements that are different. A compare-and-contrast essay, then, analyzes two subjects by examining them closely and comparing them, contrasting them, or both.

The key to a good compare-and-contrast essay is to choose two or more subjects that connect in a meaningful way. The purpose of conducting the comparison or contrast is not to state the obvious but rather to illuminate subtle differences or unexpected similarities. For example, if you wanted to focus on contrasting two subjects you would not pick apples and oranges; rather, you might choose to compare and contrast two types of oranges or two types of apples to highlight subtle differences. For example, Red Delicious apples are sweet, while Granny Smiths are tart and acidic. Drawing distinctions between elements in a similar category will increase the audience’s understanding of that category, which is the purpose of the compare-and-contrast essay.

Similarly, to focus on comparison, choose two subjects that seem at first to be unrelated. For a comparison essay, you likely would not choose two apples or two oranges because they share so many of the same properties already. Rather, you might try to compare how apples and oranges are quite similar. The more divergent the two subjects initially seem, the more interesting a comparison essay will be.

Writing at Work

Comparing and contrasting is also an evaluative tool. In order to make accurate evaluations about a given topic, you must first know the critical points of similarity and difference. Comparing and contrasting is a primary tool for many workplace assessments. You have likely compared and contrasted yourself to other colleagues. Employee advancements, pay raises, hiring, and firing are typically conducted using comparison and contrast. Comparison and contrast could be used to evaluate companies, departments, or individuals.

Brainstorm an essay that leans toward contrast. Choose one of the following three categories. Pick two examples from each. Then come up with one similarity and three differences between the examples.

  • Romantic comedies
  • Internet search engines
  • Cell phones

The Structure of a Comparison-and-Contrast Essay

The compare-and-contrast essay starts with a thesis that clearly states the two subjects that are to be compared, contrasted, or both, and the reason for doing so. The thesis could lean more toward comparing, contrasting, or both. Remember, the point of comparing and contrasting is to provide useful knowledge to the reader. Take the following thesis as an example that leans more toward contrasting.

Thesis statement : Organic vegetables may cost more than those that are conventionally grown, but when put to the test, they are definitely worth every extra penny.

Here the thesis sets up the two subjects to be compared and contrasted (organic versus conventional vegetables), and it makes a claim about the results that might prove useful to the reader.

You may organize compare-and-contrast essays in one of the following two ways:

  • According to the subjects themselves, discussing one and then the other
  • According to individual points, discussing each subject in relation to each point

The organizational structure you choose depends on the nature of the topic, your purpose, and your audience. See the chart below, which diagrams the ways to organize the organic versus conventional vegetables thesis.

Organize by Subject

Given that compare-and-contrast essays analyze the relationship between two subjects, it is helpful to have some phrases on hand that will cue the reader to such analysis. See the Table of Phrases of Comparison and Contrast for examples.

Many business presentations are conducted using comparison and contrast. The organizing strategies—by subject or individual points—could also be used for organizing a presentation. Keep this in mind as a way of organizing your content the next time you or a colleague have to present something at work.

Create an outline for each of the items you chose in the earlier exercises. Use the point-by-point organizing strategy for one of them, and use the subject organizing strategy for the other.

Choose two people who are significant in your life and have a similar relationship with you (two friends, two siblings, etc). Make a list of similarities and differences between these people. Consult your list, then draw a conclusion based on the presence of these similarities and differences. Outline the similarities and differences, then write a statement that offers an overall conclusion.

Fast Food Industry: Arguments for and Against Essay

The fast food industry has experienced massive growth over the last one decade. Health experts have linked foods offered in this industry to the increasing lifestyle diseases. They argue that the industry subjects people to junk foods, causing serious health concerns in the society. Some members of the society have also associated fast food industry with a lot of social evils that make them believe that the industry should be strictly regulated through government policies. However, it is unfair to associate all the lifestyle diseases such as coronary complications and diabetes to the industry. Every type of food has its negative effects when it is consumed in large quantities. What needs to be done is to increase awareness campaigns about dangers of overconsumption of some types of food.

The role played by this industry is so vital that it would be unreasonable to propose punitive regulatory policies against it. There are those who depend a lot on this industry. Some people believe that they get maximum variety of foods they need from the fast food stores. A standard McDonald’s store will have a variety of meals to choose from, making them very popular with the youth. This industry is also known for its innovative nature. We need to promote healthy eating among members of the society. When we visit fast food stores, we should ask for healthy foods that do not pose any health risks to us. It would be okay to take some of the delicacies such as fried chicken once in a while, but it should not form the basic dish in the daily menu.

Fast food industry has experienced a massive growth over the last two decades in various countries across the world. McDonald’s, KFC, Subway, Pizza Hut, Starbucks, Burger King, and Domino’s Pizza are some of the leading fast food restaurants that have managed to expand their operations beyond their local market. However, there has been a raging debate about the benefits and negative consequences of this industry. The controversy has been on the health consequences of the industry against some of the benefits it offers. While a section of the society believes that this industry is very beneficial, especially to those who have limited time to prepare their own meals, another section has been complaining about some of the negative health consequences and financial impact this industry has on people.

The arguments against fast food industry are just as strong as the argument for it. It is important to analyze specific facts that are put forth by the group opposed to it, and those who are in support in order to determine the relevance of the industry (Carney 1995, p. 66). Basing our arguments on business ethics, this research will analyze benefits of this industry against the negative consequences it has on people.

In a piece of research, it is always important to be able to manage expectations of the audience in order to improve chances that they will accept the findings of the research. According to Schlosser (2012, p. 25), the society is highly diversified, and when approaching specific issues, people are likely to take sides based on their feelings about the issues. Their feelings will define their expectations. For instance, those who believe that fast food industry is beneficial to them and other members of the society will expect the findings of this research to be in support of their beliefs. On the other hand, those who are opposed to the industry will expect this report to give strong points that will be against the industry.

Each of the two sides has its own reasons why it takes a specific stand on the issue, and this must be respected. However, both sides must appreciate that in research work such as this one, there will be a need to take a stand based on the findings that will be made. The findings will form the basis of evidence that will advice whether the report will support or reject specific point of reasoning.

Different people have different perceptions towards fast food industry. There are those who believe a mention of fast food industry means such delicacies as fried chicken, hamburgers, hotdogs, and those other fancy foods that they enjoy taking along the city streets (Cate 2011, p. 69). This group therefore, associates this industry with fun, and it may be difficult to change their perception from this. It may be difficult to convince them that the fun they generate from such food may pose some threats to their health. On the other hand, there are those who believe that this industry is the main reason why countries like Qatar, the United States, and the United Kingdom is spending a lot in the health sector.

These extreme perceptions must be managed so that they can appreciate that in one way or the other, they may be wrong. Before getting into the evaluation of different scholarly opinions, it is strongly suggested that those who have strong beliefs over the issue should take a break and appreciate that they could be wrong. This way, it becomes easy to open a fair ground of debates over the issue.

Fast food industry has been in existence for some time now, and the recent statistics shows that it is expanding at an unprecedented rate. According to Jakle and Sculle (2002, p. 45), fast food stores have outmuscled conventional hotels that was popular before, both in the developing and developed countries. Hotels are currently considered a preserve for the rich, or those on tours. Despite massive campaigns by the medical fraternity and other members of society against fast foods, there have been no indications that people are willing to withdraw from eating such foods. They continue to ignore for reasons they believe are justifiable enough. It would be important to analyze specific reasons that make them support or denounce this industry.

Arguments for the Fast Food Industry

According to Smith (2006, p. 55), fast food industry is one of the fastest developing industries not only in the developed nations but also in the developing world. This scholar argues that for the last one decade, there has been over 70% growth of this industry worldwide. Travelers find it easy to pope into fast food stores, and so do those at work or in a picnic within the city or city suburbs. This research sought to identify specific benefits that people get from this industry, making it one of the most robust industries in many countries around the world. One of the reasons that have been cited as the reason for the growth of this industry is its convenience. In the current economy, most people find themselves working in town settings. As a result of the pressure that employers have on their employees, it becomes difficult for people to find time to rush home for lunch.

In some cases, some of these employees only have one hour or less to get their lunch. Scherer (2010, p. 53) says that ,it is during such breaks that these employees get some little time to address some personal issues, or complete some assignments that they were not able to do, just to ensure that they can beat their deadlines. For this group, what they need most is a convenient location that is near their offices, and can offer foods they need within the shortest time possible.

Such locations are definitely not hotels where they will have to wait for over 45 minutes for their meals to be ready. Fast foods offer a perfect solution to this group. With a list of foods that are always ready such as fried chicken and hamburgers, customers get to be served in less than five minutes. It would take them another five to ten munities to take such meals, and less than two minutes to pay the bill. This means that in less than twenty minutes, one would have taken lunch and would be ready to go back to their work stations (Emerson1979, p. 88). This is one of the main reasons why this industry has experienced tremendous growth.

According to Johansen (2012, p. 87), the friendly prices that fast foods offer must have been the main source of attraction, especially among the middle class people. With the ever increasing cost of living, people are looking for alternatives that would cost them less as compared to other alternatives. Smith (2012, p. 78) says that a meal that costs $ 180 in a standard hotel may probably cost $ 60 or $ 70 in some of the fast food outlets. The middle class is very sensitive about the cost they have to pay for various products. Such a massive difference in price would easily make them be drawn to fast food stores. Given the fact that they have to eat in such outlets for at least five times a week, they easily find it economical to eat at the fast food stores.

A section of the society believes that they get maximum variety of foods they need from the fast food stores. For instance, a standard McDonald’s store will have a variety of meals to choose from, making them very popular with the youth. This industry is also known for its innovative nature. While hotels tend to be conservative by preparing only those meals that are known to their customers, fast food outlets always try to bring something new into their menu. This way, they get to present a variety of meals to their customers. Some of these customers like the experience of having new types of food every time they visit these stores. This makes them anticipate for more new products on every visit they make. This has seen many people, especially the youth, flock in fast food stores.

The societal structure is changing, and some of the roles that were associated with a specific gender, have to be redefined in an environment where both parents are bread winners. The notion that women were supposed to take care of children and home, while men look for family bread is no longer in existence. Women are currently as active in the corporate world just as their male counterparts. They leave their houses in the morning, and come back in the evening as tired as their husbands. It becomes difficult for them to go to the kitchen and prepare meals for the family. Such families have found their solace in the fast food industry (Rosoman 2008, p. 97).

On their way home from work, they can easily walk into a fast food outlet and buy a complete meal for the entire family. This way, they do not have to subject themselves to a tedious task of preparing meals once they get home. Given the friendly pricing of most of the fast food stores, they find it easy to manage their budget easily, while still ensuring that every family member is pleased with the meals they get. Fast food stores have been viewed as a symbol of diversity that we currently have in our society.

The world has been turned into a global village, and it is easy to find people from various corners of the world staying within a small part of town within this country. Qatar, just like the United States, has been attracting many visitors from all parts of the world. With such diversity comes the need to have food outlets that will offer a variety of food products that would meet the diversified needs. Most of the hotels prefer sticking to specific types of food that are popular within a given region. However, giant fast food stores such McDonald’s will find it easy to prepare a variety of meals as long as there is a ready market for these foods.

This not only make such stores convenient for people, but they also act as forums where members of the society get to appreciate the diversity they have in the country. Such social forums encourage integrations among people of different cultural settings. This makes the industry an integral part of the society whose role goes beyond offering meals, but also fostering peace and unity among people from different cultural backgrounds.

Arguments against the Fast Food Industry

Fast food industry has been viewed as one of the leading health concerns in the current society. Some members of the society have also associated fast food industry with a lot of social evils that make them believe that the industry should be eliminated through government policies. It would be necessary to analyze some of the specific claims that have been made against this industry to determine if they are relevant.

According to Dalgleish (2006, p. 67), most of the foods offered in the fast food industry are associated with a series of health problem. The fast food industry offer junk food that many people prefer simply because of their tastes or the belief that they are cheap. The deep-fried chicken or meat, the hamburgers, and such other related foods are rich in calories. When taken regularly, such calories may accumulate in the body leading to serious health consequences.

Currently, the leading causes of death in the United States are the coronary related problems. Other lifestyle diseases such as diabetes are also on the rise. These diseases are directly related to the kind of meals we take, and that is why many health experts have associated them with the fast food outlets. Foods offered in these stores also pose other health problems to the innocent population (Duram 2010, p. 47). As the name suggest, most of the meals at such stores take very a short period of time to be prepared. For example, meat would be fried within the shortest period possible because of the large number of customers that have to be served.

This means that if that particular meat had some infections, then it would be easily consumed by people, a fact that puts their lives into a great danger. The main problem is that the victims do not appreciate that they are subject to some serious health problems that may affect their lifestyle. They know that these risks exist, but prefer to live in denial. This may require some interventions from the government to make the players in this industry comply with some of the standards that should be set by relevant governmental agencies on health.

Fast food industry is one of the strongest forces that lead to distortion of the traditional family structure. According to Hargreave and Hill (2001, p. 95), one of the most important moments in a family is during the meal time. It brings together all members of the family at a table, and this helps strengthen family ties. Members of the family may get to discuss other important matters after meals, and this helps in developing strong foundations for children. This way, children develop as responsible members of the society who appreciates social structures. Parents also get to understand their children, and the specific issues that may be affecting them in one way or the other.

Fast food stores are changing this attractive family structure. Parents now know that they can work till late hours, pass by a fast food outlet and buy food for the entire family. When they reach home late at night, children are always too sleepy to engage in any healthy discussion with their parents. They are forced at eat in a hurry so that they can go to bed. The parents also fail to get quality time for each other. They slowly get withdrawn from each other, and the feeling that they do not need each other starts developing in their minds. The man develops the feeling that he can do without the wife because some of the duties he expected her to address can be taken care of by these outlets. This explains why there is a consistent rise in the rates of divorce (Hayes & Laudan 2009, p. 83).

Most of the fast food stores have been associated with human rights abuse and total disregard to some of the labor laws. According to Torelli (2011, p. 77), the law defines that every American is entitled to work for 7-8 hours in a day. Any other extra hours must be treated as overtime, and such overtime must have higher remunerations. However, a recent study by Aaseng (2001, p. 68) shows that some of these fast food stores are not following this regulation. They subject their employees to poor working environment, and some are forced to be on duty for over 12 hours in a day. While some pretend to pay a little higher for the extra hours worked, most of these stores pay a flat rate even for the overtime that employees are subjected to work. In New York, there have been demonstrations by workers in this industry claiming that their rights are being violated.

In Qatar, things are not any different. Most of the fast food stores prefer employing people as casuals. They would lay them off when they realize that they have worked for them long enough to qualify for permanent employment, only to higher them latter as new employees. According to the report by Pendrys (2011, p. 96), this tactic is very common among the leading firms in this industry. In order to perfect this impunity, they have developed a strategy where their employees are paid per day. This is to confirm that they are treating these employees as casuals whose services are only needed at that moment they are within the firm. As Sacco and Schott (2011, p. 86) observe, poor pay that employees receive from their work is one of the reasons why there is social strife in parts of the society. Such cases as industrial actions have negative impact on the economy.

Some of these employees may even consider engaging in criminal acts to help them increase their income to supplement with what they get from these stores. The increasing numbers of people who visit hospital with lifestyle related diseases have overstretched capacities on most hospitals. This has lowered the quality of service delivered at such institutions.

It is clear from the discussion above that there are people who strongly believe that fast food industry is important in the normal developmental processes in our society. On the other hand, another section believes that fast food industry is associated with health problems and other social evils that make it an undesirable industry. These two factions have very strong reasons that make them believe in their stand. However, a review of both sides’ views reveals that there is some truth in what both sides say. It is a fact that some of the foods offered in the fast food outlets are junk, and therefore, pose serious health problems to the users.

These health problems not only affect the victims but also the government and public in general. When many people fall ill with some complex diseases such as heart problems, the government will be forced to spend a lot to take care of this population. Government expenditure on health sector has been increasing over the last one decade. This is closely related to the foods offered by this industry. As mentioned above, some of these foods pose serious health problems to those who consume them.

The government has the responsibility of ensuring that its citizens get access to quality medical care. Given the increasing number of those who visit hospitals with diseases related to their eating disorders, government facilities are overstretched. This makes it difficult to offer them quality healthcare. In the meantime, the number of people who will be working in the government or private institutions will be decreased. This in turn lowers the output level of the society. Ethically, this may be an unacceptable trend that this society may not tolerate.

On the other hand, it is also true that fast food stores have offered a cheap alternative to the middle class who are struggling to make ends meet. These food outlets are conveniently located along the streets, making it easy for the working class to have access to meals during lunch hours without much struggle. This industry has been very supportive to women who have gotten into the corporate world. They can now get ready meals for their families, lessening the burden of having to prepare meals on their own. In order to find a middle ground between these two contradicting arguments, there is need for a rational reasoning.

Everything when taken in excess has its negative consequences. The society needs awareness campaign to let them know the specific foods to eat in moderation to avoid any negative health consequences. This way, the society will know how to eat responsibly. When the demand for food classified as junk by medical experts reduces, these fast food stores will be forced to stock healthy foods.

Say you’re on a first date and want to make a good impression. You decide to splurge and take them to a local fine dining establishment that recently opened in your community and has been getting rave reviews. You call them up, and, miraculously, they have a table free at the exact time you hoped.

You and your date arrive and are shown to your seat by a host in a fancy suit. The lighting is low, giving the evening a romantic ambiance. Around you, other diners speak in low tones as servers hover close by, making sure drinks are constantly refilled. The menu is prix fixe, meaning there’s only a few options, but it’s several courses fixed at one total price. The food takes a long time to prepare, giving you and your date plenty of time to get to know one another.

When it finally arrives and you bite into it, it’s the most delicious thing you’ve ever had: quality ingredients, cooked to perfection, with just the right amount of seasoning. Truly, this is one of the best dining experiences you’ve ever had…until the check comes. After your server thanks you and walks away, your stomach drops as you double check the bottom line. You’ve hit it off with your date and you can tell there will be a second one, but you hope that next time around, they’ll pay. You’ll be feeling this one in your wallet for a long time to come.

By contrast, picture taking the same first date to a local fast food chain. Under fluorescent lighting, you order a combo meal that’s ready in under two minutes, cutting your conversation short. As you and your date try to find a table that’s not covered in dried ketchup, rowdy children throw french fries into your path. When you bite into your burger, it’s a little cold, the lettuce a tad wilted, and you can tell your stomach will pay for it later.

But for now, you’ve barely paid at all. It’s the cheapest date you’ve ever had. You’re just not sure there will be another one.

Splitting the Bill

As these two illustrations show, there’s a big difference between fine dining and fast food establishments. A fine dining restaurant is like the food equivalent of a five-star hotel. They’re marked by their atmosphere, excellent customer service, and high-quality menu options. Your comfort and experience are at the top of the staff’s concerns.

By contrast, fast food chains prioritize low prices and convenience. What’s more, ingredients are often chock-full of antibiotics , which can lead to a dangerous build up of intolerance to their effects.

But according to food writer Daniela Galarza , there’s more to it than the food. Galarza holds a BA in Cultural Food Studies from Cornell University and a Certificate of Pastry Arts from the International Culinary Center . She studied bread and pastries in France and worked a few years in the restaurant industry before writing about food full-time. Galarza says that there are three main differences between fine dining and fast food.

The first and most obvious difference is price, in both cost of ingredients and cost to consumers. The second is style of service.

“At fast food or fast casual restaurants, diners order at a counter, and either receive food at the counter, or food is brought to them at a table,” she says. “At fine dining restaurants, diners order at a table and food is brought to them.”

The third difference is one that many diners don’t consider very often: how they pay. “In fine dining, the diner is always paying at the table, and in either fast casual or fast food [restaurants], the diner is paying at the counter,” Galarza says.

Fine and Dine

According to Galarza, fine dining restaurants are also sometimes known as “white tablecloth” establishments. The entire concept is elevated in both price and offerings. “Generally, [with] fine dining, customers are expecting a really well-crafted service experience,” she says. “They’re expecting hospitality but also for their needs to be anticipated by the server.”

Further, Galarza points out that the style of service can often differ even within the fine dining industry.

“Classic European fine dining differs from classic Asian fine dining,” she says. “In many ways, a lot of fine sushi restaurants are fine dining, [where] you’ll be sitting at a counter and the chef will be serving you.”

But even then, servers are anticipating your every need. “You should never have to want for anything, and the chef or the server is really there to make sure you have everything you need,” she says.

Then there’s the food. In fine dining, “The food is of a much higher standard—presented elegantly, and the quality is very high.”

If it’s not perfect, if they didn’t eat the entire plate [or] sent anything back, then it’s assumed something was wrong.

While fine dining may sound like an amazing experience for the diner, all of that comfort and convenience comes at a cost to the staff. “As you move into finer dining, people get much more career-minded and serious about it,” says Joel Payne, a chef who’s worked on everything from food trucks in downtown St. Louis to French fine dining restaurants in NYC.

“Fine dining clientele are very, very rich, [and] very particular about how everything is. If it’s not perfect, if they didn’t eat the entire plate [or] sent anything back, then it’s assumed something was wrong.”

That need for perfection takes its toll on the cooks and servers. Payne doesn’t mince words when describing the contrasts between his fine dining customers and those he served from a food truck. “On a food truck, it’s like, ‘Oh, thanks for the barbecue! This is awesome, I’m going to enjoy my life and not hate myself,’ like a lot of fine dining people do,” he says.

The higher one moves in the restaurant industry, the less mistakes are tolerated. Part of what creates so much stress is the extremely limited margins fine dining restaurants often have.

“People are stretched so thin because the margins in the food industry are razor-thin,” Payne says. “So you’re only going to have as small of a number as humanly possible to accomplish the work that needs doing, as far as laborers go. Chefs are going to be doing far too many things for one person, and if you have an issue, he’s going to be instantly mad at you because he’s stretched so thin.”

Payne says that in his French fine dining restaurant, he heard his fair share of yelling, cursing, and belittling of subordinates. He quit when a vacation request he put in months in advance was not honored. That attitude persists, he says, because the standards are so high that people feel they have a right to take their frustrations out on their subordinates since they had to deal with similar abuse themselves when they started out.

An Alternative Arises

What if you don’t want to splurge for a fine dining experience but are looking for something a little more respectable than fast food? In recent decades, a third dining option has emerged: fast casual. Many fine dining chefs are getting into the fast casual business .

They became [this] national landmark for a lot of restaurants who wanted to copy their success.

A fast casual restaurant is a chain like Chipotle, Panera Bread, or the NYC staple Shake Shack. In fact, Shake Shack was started by fine dining restauranteur Danny Meyer, whose Gramercy Tavern establishment made a huge splash in New York’s restaurant landscape when it opened in 1994. Shake Shack itself has seen enormous growth since it opened, growing from 60 stores when it opened publicly to 134 worldwide.

Galarza says there’s a lot more nuance in the differences between fast casual restaurants and fast food. “Fast casual started a few decades ago, and it started small. There were a lot of smaller players that were doing it in cities across the U.S.,” she says. “But the chain that took it wide was Chipotle…they became [this] national landmark for a lot of restaurants who wanted to copy their success.”

Chipotle offered a few distinct features to diners that separated it from fast food: higher-quality ingredients; an assembly line approach that was right in front of customers so they could see exactly what was going into their food; and a slightly higher price point.

“I’d say that fast casual restaurants, on average, are 20–30 percent more [expensive] than fast food restaurants are, and they are at least marketing themselves as serving a higher quality product with more transparency,” Galarza says.

In addition, there are a few more subtle differences in the way the food is prepared and delivered at fast casual restaurants. Sometimes a dish will be ordered at the counter that might not be ready immediately.

“Often at fast casual restaurants, depending on the style, the diner may take a ticket and then be called up to their food, or the food might be brought over to their table,” Galarza says.

The Final Course

Knowing that there are healthier options like fast casual out there, why would anyone eat fast food? Galarza says that fast food chains have their place in the dining economy as well. While fast food is not necessarily the most nutritious, people are getting a meal that’s quick, affordable, and convenient.

“Because of fast food ubiquity, you can find it everywhere in the country [and] you know exactly what you’re going to get,” she says, adding, “And for the most part, it doesn’t taste bad. It’s designed to taste good to the human tongue. So whether or not it’s nutritious or good for the human body aside, it’s meeting a lot of needs for a variety of consumers.”

Fast food stores should offer adequate information about their products to consumers, which is not always possible and convenient. However, fast food chains are thriving, some through compromising circumstances, while the others are trying to make things straight for their customers. McDonalds has more than 35000 outlets in 119 countries ( Ferdman ). The expansion of Chick-Fil-A is rather slow, but it is aggressive on upgrading its services. This essay will compare and contrast Chick-Fil-A and McDonalds fast-food restaurants in the light of revenue, advertisement, menu flexibility, and ethical responsibility.

Although the fast food menu is limited, the restaurants try to make adjustments to satisfy local preferences. This feature is more common with McDonalds, which has outlets in culturally diverse localities. However, even Chick-Fil-A slightly changes its menu to accommodate different preferences. McDonalds has outlets in Asia, where religious and cultural beliefs advocate for vegetarian diets. To accommodate these beliefs, the menus in such locations include vegetarian meals prepared with discretion from the non-vegetarian ones ( Gasparro and Jargon ). McDonalds has faced charges of misrepresenting some of its menu items as vegetarian despite the fact that they contained meat. To keep sales high, it is inevitable for fast food restaurants to consider consumer beliefs and diet preferences specific to different cultures and regions. Moreover, the knowledge of different preferences saves the restaurants from trouble with the communities. Similarly, McDonalds’ menus are more flexible than those of Chick-Fil-A. McDonalds’ menu consists of chicken, lamb, and beef meat, while that of Chick-Fil-A consists of only chicken meat. This narrow scope limits Chick-Fil-A from diversifying.

In addition, advertisement forms the base of every business. Both Chick-Fil-A and McDonalds have the same advertisement approaches. The two restaurants major on TV advertisement as they also venture in sponsorship for further sales strategies. The two restaurants have been sponsoring sports events. In particular, McDonalds ventures in sponsoring big sports events, such as the FIFA World Cup games. Chick-Fil-A holds one advertisement slogan, “EAT MORE CHICKEN.” To maintain the intellectual aspect of this slogan, Chick-Fil-A has been into confrontations with different corporations ( McWhirter ). McDonalds has been using different slogans over the years. For both restaurants, advertisements have played a big role in increasing their sales and revenue.

Ethical responsibility defines a business’ morality and commitment to the community. Chick-Fil-A is more ethically responsible than McDonalds. After concerns from health organizations that fast food menus are problematic and serve as a source of obesity, Chick-Fil-A has been working on reducing every chemical, fats, and products that adversely affect health ( Choi ). The CEO of Chick-Fil-A says that the restaurant is based on Christian principles, which do not allow devious behavior and irrational way of earning. Therefore, the restaurant will abide by all laws and everything that supports health of the consumers. In connection to that, it plans to be serving chicken raised without the use of antibiotics that lead to some health problems. However, McDonalds is less committed to ethical responsibility ( Gasparro and Jargon ). The restaurant’s management focuses on reducing cost and increases profits. Therefore, they plan to be serving meat from animals raised using genetically modified foods, which puts health of consumers at risk. This is a poor moral approach for the restaurant, since it prioritizes profit over the ethics of business.

Fast food is seemingly everywhere. One can find a McDonald’s, a Chick-fil-A, a Taco Bell, a Wendy’s, a Dunkin’ or a Domino’s, just to name a few of the most popular chains, in towns and cities across the United States and around the world.

What do you think about fast food? Is it something that improves our lives and makes the world a better place? Or is it a bad thing for our health and a negative influence in our communities?

Brian Gallagher begins the article “ Fast Food Forever: How McHaters Lost the Culture War ” by discussing how the fast food industry faced a strong backlash two decades ago, when the film “Super Size Me,” directed by and starring Morgan Spurlock, became a smash hit. He writes:

Following Mr. Spurlock as he ate nothing but McDonald’s for 30 days — and the ill effects that diet had on his health — the film became the high-water mark in a tide of sentiment against fast food. McDonald’s, specifically, became a symbol for the glossy hegemony of American capitalism both at home and abroad. “McJobs” became a term for low-paying, dead-end positions, “McMansions” for garish, oversize houses. In 1992, the political theorist Benjamin Barber used the term “McWorld” as shorthand for emergent neoliberal dominance; seven years later, protesters against the World Trade Organization seemed to agree, launching a newspaper box through a McDonald’s window during the “Battle of Seattle” marches. Two years after that, Eric Schlosser’s “ Fast Food Nation ” was published. A broad indictment of the entire fast-food industry, the best seller accused the industry of being bad for the environment, rife with labor issues, culturally flattening and culinarily fattening.

The article explains that fast food is still thriving 20 years later:

But two decades later, not only is McDonald’s bigger than ever, with nearly 42,000 global locations, but fast food in general has boomed. There are now some 40 chains with more than 500 locations in the United States. Fast food is the second-largest private employment sector in the country, after hospitals, and 36 percent of Americans — about 84 million people — eat fast food on any given day. The three major appeals of fast food remain intact: It’s cheap, it’s convenient and people like the way it tastes.

Mr. Gallagher also discusses the pivotal role that children play for the fast food industry:

Historically, fast-food companies have been very astute about marketing to children, realizing decades ago that creating customers early means creating customers for life. At the peak of his fame in the 1980s, Ronald McDonald was in some countries more recognizable to children than Mickey Mouse. In 2000, 90 percent of children ages 6 to 9 visited a McDonald’s in a given month. But as Frances Fleming-Milici, the director of marketing initiatives at the UConn Rudd Center for Food Policy and Health, put it, “If it’s marketed to children, it’s probably bad for you.” That became increasingly clear in the mid-2000s. Childhood obesity rates had nearly tripled in 25 years, and the public outcry was growing more urgent. A consortium of large food brands, including McDonald’s, Burger King, PepsiCo and Coca-Cola, tried to get out in front of the problem. They formed the Children’s Food and Beverage Advertising Initiative , and the participating corporations self-imposed limits on advertising to children under 13 (later 12). In place of that marketing to children, though, the big fast-food chains have found something arguably more potent, with McDonald’s, as ever, leading the way. “They’re hyperfocusing on what they call fan-favorite moments, trying to essentially identify how we emotionally connect to McDonald’s,” said Kaitlin Ceckowski, who researches fast-food marketing strategies at Mintel, a market research agency. “What ‘human truths’ exist around their brand?”
