The UK is one of the most popular destinations for many international students with many top-ranked and world-class universities and a welcoming culture as well.

Being a research powerhouse means more access to cutting-edge research facilities, which can go a long way in conducting research during your PhD studies. The UK, however, as a developed Western country, has higher living costs, with some major cities and programmes bearing notoriously expensive price tags.

This can be a heavy burden for international students seeking a UK PhD degree. Fortunately, the UK has a great list of university PhD scholarships that may help you realise your dream.

Leeds University Business School: International Business Department Scholarship

The International Business Department of the Leeds University Business School is offering up to two PhD scholarships for international applicants; the deadline is Apr. 1, 2022. One of the world’s leading units for international business and among a handful of triple-accredited business schools in the world, this department is well-known for their exceptional research and teaching.

The award is for three years; the last two years are renewable subject to academic performance. The successful recipient will get a maintenance grant worth 15,609 pounds (standard UKRI rate for Session 2021/22).

University of Cambridge: Harding Distinguished Postgraduate Scholars Programme

Awarded to a select group of 25 brilliant University of Cambridge PhD students of all disciplines and nationalities, this programme aims to produce graduates who can make a tangible difference to the academic community with their excellent research. The majority will be affiliated with St Catharine’s College; the rest will be distributed among the other colleges. 

Depending on your chosen department, the last deadline is Jan. 6, 2022. The PhD scholarship winners will receive a generous package including the University Composition Fee and a 6,000 pounds personal allowance throughout their studies, an annual stipend of 18,000 pounds and student visa costs.

SOAS University of London CHASE

SOAS University of London is among the world’s top 50 for Arts and Humanities (QS rankings 2021) and is a top 20 UK institution for these same subjects (THE rankings). As part of the Consortium of the Humanities and the Arts South-East England (CHASE) funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council, this Doctoral Training Partnership offers up to 56 Arts and Humanities studentships; a limited number is available for international applicants. 

You should first apply to SOAS by Jan. 10, 2022 so that you can work with your proposed supervisor(s) on the CHASE application to submit by Jan. 28, 2022. You can expect to receive a training grant and a stipend as well.

Aston University College of Business and Social Sciences

As a multidisciplinary college in Aston University, Birmingham, the College of Business and Social Sciences is home to researchers from Aston Business School, Aston Law School and the School of Social Sciences and Humanities. Up to six fully-funded PhD studentships are available for application to any of these schools’ programmes – the deadline is Feb. 28, 2022.

You will get full tuition coverage at the international rate plus an annual maintenance grant of 15,840 pounds (2022-23 rate) throughout your three years. You should have obtained a merit for your master’s dissertation besides a first class or second upper class honours degree.

University of St Andrews: Doctoral Scholarship in Biology and Statistics

St Leonard’s Postgraduate College at the University of St Andrews is offering a doctoral scholarship to a suitably qualified student to take up research on developing novel methods for estimating the abundance of breeding grey seals. You will have three co-supervisors, and can choose to matriculate in either Biology or Statistics.

The PhD scholarship covers full tuition fees for up to three and a half years on top of an annual maintenance stipend (the 2021-22 annual rate is 15,609 pounds). You will have access to the free GRADskills training programme as well. 

University of Liverpool: Accounting and Finance Subject Group

This PhD scholarship takes on a slightly different form as a  Graduate Teaching Fellowship (GTF) – the deadline is Jan. 7, 2022. If you have a first or upper second class honours degree plus a distinction for your master’s degree besides being committed to research, this GTF allows you to collect teaching experience together with your PhD studies.

Under the Accounting and Finance Subject Group, you will have the opportunity to complete a teacher training programme offered by the University of Liverpool . A living stipend of 15,609 pounds plus a fee waiver will be awarded to exceptional applicants.

Swansea University: the UKRI CDT in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and Advanced Computing

At Swansea University , you can apply for the four-year fully funded opportunity to research upon these broad areas of particle physics and astronomy, biological and health, and mathematical and computer sciences. You will be trained in artificial intelligence, high-performance computing and high-performance data analytics.

After training in the first year, you will have several short-term work placements in the second and third years. Besides full tuition fees, you will enjoy a stipend of  15,921 poundsand other allowances; the closing date is Feb. 11, 2022.

University of Exeter – PhD Scholarship

The University of Exeter’s generous funding scheme consists of two funding parts funding – one Research Masters in Economics and then a PhD programme in either Finance or Economics – both at the Business School; you have to apply by Jan. 21, 2022. As part of the scholarship, students have to work as teaching or research assistants for about 180 hours (23 days) a year, which can help enhance your research and education skills.

The funding includes a combined stipend and teaching allowance for 180 hours of 19,000 poundsper year. Students can also apply for additional funding for research, development and conference travel expenses. 

Imperial College London: Chemical Engineering PhD Scholarship

One of the best universities in the UK, Imperial College London has up to 10 fully-funded Chemical Engineering PhD scholarships via the Chemical Engineering Department . You should have a First Class Honours Degree at master’s level in chemical engineering or a related engineering/science field. This scholarship is tenable for 42 months, covering both tuition fees and 21,400 pounds for maintenance.

You should apply by Jan. 31, 2022. If you are successful, you would be asked to select two projects; depending on your supervisor’s agreement, you can be given either your first choice or second one.  

Oxford University – Clarendon Scholarship

The Clarendon Scholarship is one of the most famous PhD scholarships. You do not need to submit a separate application form for this scholarship; when you apply for a Oxford University PhD programme, you automatically qualify to apply for the Clarendon Scholarship.

Your preferred programme at Oxford may have different deadlines but generally, January is the last application deadline to be eligible for this scholarship. This particular PhD scholarship covers full tuition fees and a living stipend of 15,609 pounds (2021-22 rate).

LSE PhD Studentships

For 2024 entry, LSE will be offering studentships to new PhD students, in 2023 this was 88, in the form of LSE PhD Studentships, LSE DTP  ESRC Studentships  and London Arts and Humanities Partnership (LAHP)  Studentships.

The awards are open to high calibre students of all nationalities studying across all research areas at the School.

Eligibility

LSE PhD Studentships are tenable for four years and cover full fees and an annual stipend, which for 2024 entry is £21,237. They are available for UK and international students undertaking research in any LSE discipline, with annual renewal subject to satisfactory academic performance.

These awards will be made solely on the basis of outstanding academic merit and research potential. This relates both to your past academic record and to an assessment of your likely aptitude to complete a PhD in your chosen topic in the time allocated.

How to apply

Academic departments nominate students for consideration by a School panel for all PhD funding opportunities they may be eligible for. There is no separate application for any of these studentships.

To be considered for this funding, you must submit your complete application for admission to LSE by a specific date. This date differs by academic department. Refer to the individual programme page for the relevant deadline information.  Find your graduate programme .

Joint PhD Scholarships

Three scholarships are available for the 2023/24 academic year for students applying to joint PhD programmes run in collaboration with the University of Hong Kong, National University of Singapore or the University of Sao Paulo, with King's as their home institution.

The King's Joint PhD Scholarship provides full tuition fees, stipend and an annual research grant.

King’s-China Scholarship Council PhD Scholarship programme (K-CSC) 2023-24

King's College London and the China Scholarship Council (CSC) hold an agreement to jointly fund PhD students to pursue research degrees at King's College London.

As part of the agreement, successful students will receive a scholarship that covers the tuition fee, an annual living allowance that includes overseas student health cover, a return airfare to London and visa application fees.

Please be aware that students funded through this scheme must abide by any additional terms and conditions set by the CSC. Scholars will be required to enter into a legally binding agreement with the CSC before they are able to take up the scholarship. If there are any significant developments that could affect/hamper a scholar's expected completion of the PhD, scholars are advised to get in touch with the Education Section in the Chinese Embassy.

A considerable number of K-CSC scholarship awards are available for the 2023-24 competition.

Postgraduate scholarships for international students

You can apply for a postgraduate scholarship from the UK government to cover things like course fees and the cost of living when you study in the UK.

International students from the EU aren’t eligible for these scholarships. If you’re from Malta or Cyprus you can still apply for Commonwealth Scholarships.

There are also undergraduate scholarships available if you’re from the Falkland Islands, St Helena or the Seychelles.

Apply for a scholarship to do a one-year taught masters

Check if your country is eligible for a Chevening Scholarship.

You can apply for a Chevening Scholarship if all of the following apply:

you have an undergraduate degree

you have at least 2 years’ eligible work experience

you meet the Chevening English language requirements

• a split-site PhD

Commonwealth Scholarships

Commonwealth Scholarships are awarded to talented individuals with the potential to make a positive impact on the global stage. Commonwealth Scholarships are managed by the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (CSC) in the UK.

As part of the UK’s ongoing commitment to the Commonwealth, each year, around 700 students are given the chance to undertake postgraduate degrees with UK universities.

If you are from a Commonwealth country and believe you could make a difference in the world but you can’t afford to fund your UK studies on your own, then you could be the ideal candidate for a Commonwealth Scholarship.

What are Commonwealth Scholarships?

Commonwealth Scholarships are aimed at students from across the Commonwealth who would not otherwise be able to afford to study in the UK. By funding postgraduate studies in a range of different study formats, the scheme helps to support future innovators and leaders.

This historic award is the UK’s primary scholarship scheme focused on contributing to the UK's international development aims. It is designed to attract outstanding talent to UK universities while supporting sustainable development overseas.

Who can apply?

To apply for a Commonwealth Scholarship, you must be a citizen or permanent resident of a Commonwealth country. You will still be eligible if you are a refugee or a British-protected person.

You need to have an undergraduate honours degree of at least upper second class (2:1). If you wish to study a PhD, you will need an appropriate master’s degree too.

Finally, you must be unable to afford to study in the UK without a scholarship.

The eligibility criteria for each type of scholarship and fellowship vary. More information is available on the CSC website .

What types of awards are available?

The Commonwealth Scholarships Commission (CSC) offers:

• Commonwealth PhD Scholarships (for least developed countries and fragile states)
• Commonwealth Split-site Scholarships (for low and middle-income countries)

CSC Development Themes

All Commonwealth Scholarships are offered under six CSC development themes.

There is no restriction on what you can study, but the CSC gives priority to applicants whose studies are most relevant to their development criteria.

What financial support is available?

Most scholarships are fully funded, which means that as well as covering your tuition fees, you will also receive your airfare to and from the UK and a living allowance to support you while you are here.

Depending on which scholarship you are applying for, you may need to apply through a National Nominating Agency , a university , or a Non-Governmental Organisation .

What do I need to apply?

To begin your online application, you’ll need a scanned copy of your passport, your academic transcript, your existing university degree certificate, two references and, if you have one, your admission letter.

What is the deadline for applications?

Annual deadlines for applications are usually in December. Check the page of the scholarship you are interested in on the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission website to see the dates when they are announced for the upcoming academic year.

If you're looking to get PhD funding for a specific research project or field of study, Doctoral studentships can provide you with either a partially or fully-funded PhD

Who awards PhD studentships?

PhD studentships are most commonly awarded by the UK's seven Research Councils in the form of Research Council grants , with research funding overseen by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) .

Individual UK universities also offer scholarships and bursaries to PhD students, while many professional bodies fund Doctoral research in collaboration with these academic institutions.

For instance, research awards are offered by the following engineering organisations:

• Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) - QUEST scholarships
• Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE)
• The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET)

Additionally, Cooperative Awards in Science and Engineering (CASE) can be part-funded by any non-academic body. These four-year PhDs require the student to work at the organisation for at least three months.

Before you start applying for a funded PhD, it's always a good idea to discuss this with a prospective supervisor first, as they're often able to provide tips on maximising the likelihood of receiving financial support.

How much can I receive?

Many PhD studentships, including those offered by universities, professional bodies, or charities, foundations and trusts, provide three years' funding paid at a similar rate to the Research Council grant:

• Fees-only studentship - These cover a student's tuition fees, plus any associated project and training costs (a minimum of £4,786 per year).
• Full studentship - These add a non-repayable, tax-free maintenance grant known as a 'stipend'. In 2024/25, this is worth a minimum of £19,237 and it can be used towards living costs - see UKRI - Find studentships and Doctoral training .

For example, a University of Manchester School of Social Sciences PhD studentship includes tuition fees for three-and-a-half years and a maintenance grant of £18,622 (2023/24 rate) per year for living expenses, plus associated research costs - such as fieldwork and attending conferences - from the Research Training Support Grant.

However, you should be aware that some PhD studentship recipients are required to teach undergraduates. While this provides an excellent opportunity to gain vital employability skills, it can also be hugely time-consuming. You must be satisfied that tutoring won't negatively affect the quality of your research before accepting your place.

Is my programme eligible for a PhD studentship?

PhD studentships can start at any time of the year, but most begin in September, October or January.

Certain types of PhD, for example professional Doctorates, may not be eligible for a PhD studentship. The same applies to part-time or distance learning options.

Am I eligible?

PhD studentships typically demand that applicants have a Bachelors degree at 2:1 or above, plus a relevant Masters degree or professional experience at that level of study.

Those who already possess a PhD are often ineligible, while some PhD studentships are limited to students fitting certain criteria - for example, those from a disadvantaged background, from a certain country or of a certain ethnicity.

If you're a European Union (EU) national, you'll need to have settled or pre-settled status under the government's EU Settlement Scheme to be eligible for student finance in this country - and this includes PhD studentships.

How do I apply for a PhD studentship?

The application process can be lengthy, and competition is fierce.

Some PhD students will be automatically considered for financial support once they've been accepted by an institution, but many are required to make separate PhD funding applications. These are usually made directly to the university - even for those studentships from Research Councils, professional bodies, or charities, foundations and trusts.

You'll typically be asked for your PhD application form, a research proposal , a cover letter and your references. After the institution has reviewed your application, you may be invited to interview.

Throughout this process, the university will scrutinise what you'll bring to the institution. Applicants at Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU), for example, are judged on:

• the quality of their research project and how it connects with research currently being undertaken at the institution
• how appropriate the supervisory team is
• their calibre, academic qualifications and academic/research experience
• whether the research can contribute towards the Research Excellence Framework (REF), meaning that interdisciplinary research will be preferred.

How do I increase my chances of getting a PhD studentship?

You can improve your chances of success by:

• asking a friend or family member to proofread your application
• carefully choosing your referees, ensuring that they'll speak positively of you
• discussing your draft application with a relevant academic
• explaining how your work will be unique and innovative
• following the funding body's guidance regarding word counts and formatting.

How to apply for a PhD in the UK

Applying for a phd is not quite as daunting as you might think. a postgraduate student recruitment officer from the university of sussex shares his tips for putting together a phd application.

There are many different reasons for wanting to pursue a PhD – to move into an academic role at a university, to continue studying a subject you are passionate about or to further your career. 

Whatever your motivation, many students are now choosing to pursue a PhD abroad. This guide will help you understand how to apply for a PhD at a UK university and answer any questions you might have around doing PhDs.

How to apply for a PhD

Application rules and methods vary for each university. The number of courses that you can apply for in a year will vary. For example, at the University of Sussex , you can apply for up to three postgraduate courses per year using the postgraduate application system.

If you are applying for more than one degree, you must submit a research proposal/statement specific to each area of study you apply for.

You can also apply to different universities to improve your chances of being accepted to a PhD course of your choosing. 

What qualifications do I need?

Each PhD will have specific entry requirements and you will also need to meet a university’s general entry requirements.  This may be an upper second-class undergraduate honours degree (2:1) or an equivalent international qualification. For some PhDs you may need a master’s qualification, and you may be asked to attend an interview.

International students may also be required to prove language proficiency. This will vary across institutions so do check what level universities expect before starting your application. 

Applicants should always check the specific entry requirements in a university’s online prospectus before making an application.

When should I start applying?

This will depend on when your term start date is. Most research degrees will start in September but some courses offer additional entry points in January or May.

You can apply all year round for research degrees starting in September, January and May, and the deadlines for applying are usually one month before the course start date for UK applicants, and three months before for international applicants.

If you’re applying for funding from an external organisation you’ll need to be aware that they may have different deadlines for the funding application. So give yourself plenty of time to research your funding options, and ensure you know how long the application process takes. 

Many universities offer a number of funded PhD opportunities and PhD scholarships for UK and international students, and it’s always worth investigating funding routes such as research councils and other organisations, both in the UK and overseas.

In some cases, it may be possible to study a PhD by distance which means you’ll be able to learn online and have virtual meetings with your supervisor.

If this is something you would be interested in doing you should check before applying whether your university can accommodate this option.

How should I look for a supervisor?

Usually if you are applying for a funded project, or to a research centre or group, you will normally be asked to provide a statement explaining your suitability for working in that area, and if successful you will be allocated a supervisor.

If you wish to propose your own area of research, you need to decide on a research topic, and you will be expected to write a research proposal. In some cases you may only be required to provide a summary of academic interests and this can be used to match you to a researcher that suits you.

If you are proposing your own research topic, there may be a research database at your university that you can search, or your university will match you with a supervisor during the assessment of your application. It may be possible to request supervision by a particular member of faculty – this will be considered but not all requests can be accommodated.

If you do find a potential supervisor who matches your research area, check their online profile for indications of their doctoral supervision capacity. If they are open to doctoral applications, you can contact them directly to check their availability for supervising you.

It is a good idea to draw up a shortlist of two to three potential supervisors, and take an in-depth look into their research history. You can also find out more about your potential supervisors by looking in the reference sections of academic textbooks and searching for articles in research databases and academic blogs.

When you contact your potential supervisor, it is important to tell them something interesting about yourself, and explain your research interests and how you feel your research proposal matches their expertise.

How do I write a research proposal?

If you are proposing your own research you will need to write a strong proposal that formulates a precise, interesting research question, and establishes the relevance and value of the proposed research question in the context of current academic thinking.

You’ll need to make sure your proposal describes the data or source material your research requires, and outlines a clear and practical methodology that enables you to answer the research question and that states clearly what you hope to discover at the end of your research, and what new areas it might open up.

The precise content and structure of your research proposal will depend on your subject area, and the University of Sussex has some helpful resources on our website to guide you through the process.

How long does the application process take?

Completing an application and writing a research proposal may take some time and should not be left until just before the application deadline.

It’s not easy to give a definite idea of how long it takes to hear if your application has been successful, as it will depend on when the application is made and the nature of the specific PhD, and you would need to meet any conditions contained within the offer before you can start the PhD.

What are the associated costs?

There won’t typically be an application fee for PhDs but there are tuition fees. If a university does charge application fees they will usually be between £50-£100.

The tuition fees for students studying in the UK are set by UK Research and Innovation . Fees for international students are £18,975 for non-lab-based subjects, and £22,975 for lab-based subjects per year.

You’ll also need to factor in living costs, but there are a number of funding routes you can apply for to help with this. As well as PhD scholarships and funded research projects there are research council awards, PhD loans for those eligible, and various organisations to which international students can apply for funding, such as The Gen Foundation and Open Society Foundations.

It’s important to be aware of the costs involved, but it’s also worth remembering that the educational, career and personal benefits of PhD study can be worth it.

• The student should be an Indian resident for a minimum of six months prior to application and should be a first-class degree holder from any recognized institution in India.
• If you have completed a master’s degree from abroad, you are not eligible to apply.
• The candidate should have already been admitted for their PhD degree at the time of application. The maximum age limit at the time of application is 30 years.

In case the total cost of the study is expected to be more than the maximum amount provided under this scholarship, the student is required to show a proof of their ability to cover the additional costs.

Additionally, the foundation has a separate Inlaks Research and Travel Grant which aims to help PhD students registered in Indian universities undertake short-term visits abroad to collect sources or contact experts for their research. 

The Gates Cambridge Scholarship is available for students who are citizens of any country outside the UK, pursuing full-time programs at the University of Cambridge. • Reside within a reasonable distance from the University of Leeds during the scholarship period.
• Have a First Degree equivalent to a UK First Class Honours degree or be in the final year of study.
• The minimum English language entry requirement for research postgraduate research study in the School of Philosophy, Religion and History of Science is an IELTS of 6.5 overall with at least 6.0 in each component.
• The test must be dated within 2 years of the course’s start date to be valid.
• PhD scholarships are available in the School of Philosophy, Religion, and History of Science.
• One scholarship is for a UK candidate, and one is for an international candidate.
• It covers maintenance stipends matching UKRI rates (INR 19L in 2023/24) and three-year full-time or five-year part-time study tuition fees.

• Clearly state your UK objectives and specific academic research plans in 2-3 pages.
• Specify your intended time frame in the UK (the CWIT grant covers about 3 weeks).
• Share the names and addresses of 2 referees familiar with your work.
• Confirm eligibility within the age range and that there has been no prior CWIT grant in the last 5 years.
• IELTS Certificate 
• Proof of unconditional acceptance into the chosen course, program, attachment, internship, or evidence of progress towards acceptance.
• Submitting portfolios, if applicable, through online links or uploading relevant documents or pictures.
• The scholarships are only for short-term research and doctorate studies, not degree courses.

2. Gates Cambridge Scholarship

The Gates Cambridge Scholarship program originated in October 2000 through a significant contribution of US$210 million from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to the University of Cambridge . The inaugural group of scholars began their residence in October 2001 . Since its beginning, the Trust has granted over 2,000 scholarships to individuals from over 100 countries. 

Approximately 250 scholars from 50 countries are studying in Cambridge at any one time. They pursue the full range of subjects available at the university, spread across its departments and colleges, forming its distinctive community. There is also a community of over 1,700 Gates Cambridge Alumni spread worldwide.

Gates Cambridge does NOT consider Business Doctorate (BusD) , Part-time degrees other than the PhD and Non-degree courses . The Scholarship covers most costs, but Gates Cambridge does not cover bench fees or the costs of scientific equipment or similar academic resources .

3. Kerb Memorial Scholarship

The Krebs Memorial Scholarship is designed for individuals whose promising research career has been disrupted due to extraordinary non-academic reasons or those ineligible for public funds. The scholarship aims to acknowledge exceptional academic distinction and recognise outstanding promise. It is not intended to supplement grants already received from other sources.

• Open to applicants of any nationality.
• Planning to pursue a PhD in Biochemistry or a related biomedical science.
• Ranked in the top 5% of PhD candidates.
• Must demonstrate an interrupted research career for extraordinary non-academic reasons (e.g., war, disease outbreak, refugee status).
• Ineligible for public funds.
• Covers tuition fees at the home student’s rate and provides maintenance.
• The scholarship is usually offered in line with the UKRI/Research Council studentships. For the 2023/24 academic year, the scholarship is worth INR 23.5L .
• Applicants must have arrangements with the intended university for the award.
• Required to upload letters from the Supervisor, Head of Department, and two academic referees during the application.
• Consideration will only be taken after receiving all supporting letters.
• Letters should confirm the candidate’s academic merit and agreement to accept them.
• The referees must assess the candidate in the top 5% of PhD candidates.
•  Letter from the intended Supervisor in the application.
• Letter from the Head of Department to support your candidacy.
• Letters from two academic referees during the application process.
• Restricted to specific fields of study, including law, humanities, and social sciences.
• Only 1 scholarship is available each year.
• Applicants must demonstrate academic excellence and financial need.
• Recipients must return to India for at least 2 years after completing their studies at Oxford.

Deadline- The deadline for funding applications for the 2023/24 academic year has passed. This program will become available again in 2024 .

4. Wolfson Scholarships

The Wolfson Scholarships are provided in the Humanities field to fully fund a PhD cost, including a travel allowance, in history, literature, and languages at six partner universities. This programme was established in 2012 and has allocated over £24 million. Indian students passionate about these fields can also apply for this scholarship and further their academic pursuits.

Wolfson Scholarships will be available in three disciplines that align closely with the Foundation’s interests: History , Literature and Languages . The awards are available for doctoral research only and will be paid over 3 years (or up to 6 years part-time). For full-time students, it is expected that students complete their doctorate in 3years .

Students should have an outstanding academic record, usually a first-class honours degree at the undergraduate level and a Master’s degree from a recognised university in a field of study relevant to their proposed doctoral research.

The Wolfson Postgraduate Scholarships in the Humanities, six associate universities are:

• University of Birmingham 
• University College London
• University of Exeter
• University of Nottingham
• University of Oxford
• University of York 
• Open to UK and International (including EU) applicants starting a campus-based PhD at any university mentioned above in the 2024/25 academic year.
• Intended Ph.D. research must be in history, literature, or languages.
• Applicants must reside in the UK during their studies.
• A track record of academic excellence is required, typically with a first-class undergraduate degree and a completed or ongoing master’s in a related field.
• Applicants must have applied for a PhD at any University mentioned above before submitting their Wolfson Scholarship application.
• Starting in 2024/25 , each student will receive a total of INR 1Cr , equating to INR 37L per annum.
• Funding includes a stipend, covering fees, and a research allowance.
• Candidates are nominated for Wolfson Scholarships by their department. Direct applications are not accepted.
• Check the department’s application procedure on its website and notify the Departmental Graduate Tutor.
• After departmental selections, Departmental Graduate Tutors send nominations to the Joint Faculties’ Office.
• A completed application form for your chosen course of study

Spark project phd scholarship: patterns, practices and interpretations of knowledge use in parliaments.

SPARK is a five-year, £1.2 million research project spanning seven case study parliaments. Originally awarded by the European Research Council (ERC), it is funded by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) through the Horizon Guarantee Scheme. This PhD scholarship is situated within the wider SPARK project.

How is knowledge used in parliaments? What are the values that underpin knowledge use in those institutions? And what are the effects of knowledge production, acceptance and contestation on democratic governance? These are pivotal questions at a time when democratic decision-making has never been more scrutinised and contested. And while there have been many longstanding debates across philosophy, humanities and social sciences about the role of knowledge in decision-making, we still know comparatively little about the role of parliaments, and their impact on democratic governance, within such debates.

In this five-year project, the team undertakes the first systematic and comparative study of parliaments – and the representatives and officials therein – as consumers, producers and mediators of knowledge. In doing so, SPARK transforms how we understand these democratic institutions as knowledge institutions. This is a necessary intervention to inform wider debates about the health of democracies given that knowledge and information have become ever more accessible and yet more contested for politicians and the public to navigate and use effectively. The project adopts an ambitious research design, focusing on seven European parliaments (the UK, German and Spanish national parliaments; the Scottish, Bavarian and Catalonian subnational parliaments; and the European Parliament) and three policy areas (health, environment, and welfare), and an innovative mix of methods to: interrogate how knowledge is gathered, circulated and exchanged; examine values and motivations underpinning the use of knowledge; and explore the impact of parliaments’ knowledge use on democratic governance.

SPARK pushes the boundaries of political science by drawing on STS, sociology and social anthropology to offer new answers to essential questions about representation, law-making and accountability. In rethinking parliaments as knowledge institutions, SPARK will have a deep impact on how we conceive of these democratic institutions and address urgent social problems and challenges including environmental degradation, healthcare crises and continuing social inequalities.

Project Team

The PhD student will be situated in the wider SPARK project team. It includes

• The Principal Investigator (PI) for SPARK is Dr Marc Geddes, Senior Lecturer in Politics at the School of Social and Political Science, University of Edinburgh; and,
• Two post-doctoral research fellows (PDRFs), who will contribute to SPARK by leading on some of the case study parliaments for this project.

The SPARK project will also work closely with other colleagues based at the University of Edinburgh and internationally, including practitioners at the case study parliaments, through (for example) research centres and networks.

The University of Edinburgh is offering a three-year funded scholarship to pursue a PhD. This UKRI-funded scholarship sits within the 2024-29 research project, Studying Parliaments and the Role of Knowledge (SPARK). SPARK is a five-year research project with three overarching objectives:

• To examine and compare patterns of knowledge use in and by parliaments. In this objective, the project team will identify what kinds of knowledges (e.g. expert, experiential, legal) are used, by whom, and under what circumstances;
• To understand how parliaments and parliamentary actors interpret the role of knowledge. In this objective, the project team will focus on MPs, officials, and stakeholders, and how their interpret different kinds of knowledges and their authority; and,
• To evaluate the impact of knowledge use on parliamentary democracies. In this objective, the project team will examine how parliamentary functions are affected by different kinds of knowledges.

To undertake this wider project, SPARK will make use of seven case study parliaments (German, UK and Spanish national parliaments; Bavarian, Scottish and Catalan sub-national parliaments; and the European Parliament) and three case study policy areas (environment, healthcare and welfare). SPARK is informed by an interpretive approach to social science research and will adopt a mixed-methods design of qualitative and quantitative research techniques.

 This PhD scholarship is situated within the wider SPARK project. Applicants should choose one (or more) of the following case study parliament(s) to pursue a research project that contributes to the overall SPARK aims: (i) the German national parliament, (ii) the Bavarian state parliament, and/or (iii) the European Parliament. Applicants may also suggest a combination of further cases from across SPARK for a comparative project. It is expected that the PhD student will focus on at least one of the three case study policy areas (healthcare, environment, welfare) as part of their project. The successful applicant will have the freedom to shape their PhD project, including data-gathering, analysis and write-up, within the broader objectives of SPARK. That is to say, the project should examine patterns of knowledge use in parliaments, understand how parliamentary actors interpret different kinds of knowledge, and the impact of knowledge use on parliamentary democracies. It will be expected that PhD data will be shared and inform the wider SPARK project; likewise, the successful applicant will also have an opportunity to make use of wider SPARK project data for their PhD.

Beyond the confines of the PhD project, the successful applicant will be expected to undertake relevant social science research methods training, work closely with the SPARK team to deliver the three overarching objectives, and participate in intellectual and research life at the University of Edinburgh. 

This scholarship is for three years (full-time PhD only), to commence on 1 September 2024. It provides:

• Stipend at the UKRI rate for three years, currently £19,237 in 2024-25
• Tuition fees for either Home/UK fees or International fees at the full-time rate for three years 
• Coverage for relevant expenses incurred as part of SPARK project tasks (to be agreed with PI)

You may have access to additional funding for research training support costs, e.g. training, fieldwork, travel, etc. from the  SPS Postgraduate Research Training Support Grant . This potential additional funding is yet to be confirmed for this award.

We welcome applications from those with either a social science undergraduate or postgraduate degree, and candidates from other disciplines that can demonstrate relevant research interests and background knowledge, commitment and skills to undertaking a PhD in Politics.

In addition to standard requirements for the full-time University of Edinburgh PhD Politics programme (with the exception of a Master’s degree requirement, as this scholarship project also accepts applicants with no Master’s qualification), applicants must meet the following additional eligibility criteria for this award:

• Relevant demonstrable background knowledge of the politics of the case study (or case studies) chosen for this PhD studentship, as identified in your application;
• Relevant language skills for the chosen case study settings (i.e. English, German or Spanish, as appropriate) to conduct research (note the PhD thesis will be written in English);
• Commitment to anti-foundationalist social science research philosophies, and to disciplinary and methodological pluralism;
• Enthusiasm about undertaking (where appropriate and relevant) qualitative and/or quantitative methods training to an advanced level;
• Willingness to share, and to contribute to, data collection and analysis across all SPARK case studies, as relevant and appropriate;
• Willingness to co-author academic and non-academic outputs with the project team on relevant SPARK-related outputs;
• Commitment to, and willingness to learn skills for, impactful research and undertaking relevant training for knowledge exchange and impact (KEI);
• Willingness to contribute to wider SPARK project tasks, such as dissemination of research via social media, updating the project website and supporting SPARK-sponsored events, etc.;
• Commitment to take part in intellectual and research life at the University of Edinburgh through physical attendance for 2-3 days a week on campus, and attendance at seminars and events; and,
• Accept that the intellectual property of data gathered and analysed for this PhD would be held by the SPARK research project.

Stage 2: Shortlisted candidates will be invited to interview (likely to take place by the end of June). Candidates will be asked to submit a two-page proposal and a previous university assignment of which they are particularly proud. These materials will be discussed as part of a presentation and an interview about their suitability for this scholarship.

Politics and International Relations at the University of Edinburgh is one of seven academic subject areas in the School of Social and Political Science (SPS), and among the largest units within the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences (CAHSS). PIR research was rated within the top ten universities in the UK (REF 2021), with a wide range of expertise including constitutional and territorial politics, UK and Scottish politics, EU politics, foreign and domestic policy, gender, international political economic, security studies, and political theory and ethics. A significant phenotypic heterogeneity exists within the clonal bacterial population for adhesion to different surfaces. Bacteria even lacking adhesive lectins can bind to cells and cause infections. The objective of this studentship is focused on engineering heterogeneous glycosystems with patchy attributes to simultaneously target varied bacterial populations with high selectivity index.  

The candidate will employ an exciting interdisciplinary approach, commencing with polymer and glycochemistry to engineer patchy glycosystems. These systems will be thoroughly characterized in our modern University laboratory using SEM, AFM, and TEM. The efficacy of these materials will be assessed against different bacterial strains in the Institute of Life Sciences at Swansea University. A comprehensive training programme will be provided by an interdisciplinary supervisory team’s expertise in chemistry (Dr Bhatia), natural products (Dr Loveridge), and microbiology (Professor Wilkinson).

This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to our undergraduate and taught postgraduate programmes in Diagnostic Radiography, Diagnostic Imaging and Medical Imaging. You will be based within the Institute’s Department of Specialist Science Education; a vibrant community of around 30 academic staff focussed on excellence in student education. You will draw upon your clinical experience and expertise to deliver high quality teaching and scholarship in the field of diagnostic imaging. You will contribute to student supervision, tutoring and administrative duties, as well as, to the Institute and School through involvement in novel approaches to student education and related scholarship. The post-holder needs to be able to work well both as part of a team and autonomously.
