HUH? WHAT IS THIS?

This is what we do: We enable adults to determine whether a movie is appropriate for them or their children, according to their own criteria. Unlike the MPAA we do not assign an inscrutable rating based on age but 3 objective ratings for SEX/NUDITY , VIOLENCE/GORE & LANGUAGE, on a scale of 0 to 10, and we explain in detail why a film rates high or low in a specific category; we also include instances of SUBSTANCE USE, a thorough list of DISCUSSION TOPICS that may elicit questions from children, and the MESSAGE the film conveys. Since our system is based on objective standards, not the viewer’s age or the artistic merits of a film, we enable adults to determine whether a movie is appropriate for their own children… | more |

‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ (2022)

Thor is one of the few remaining original Avengers and in the last ensemble movie, “Avengers: Endgame,” Thor struggles with maintaining his mental health and aimlessly joins the Guardians of the Galaxy due to lack of other options. “Thor: Love and Thunder” picks up here, and apparently Thor has turned things around and is working on something big.

'The Fabelmans' (2022)

It only takes one inspirational experience to completely change the direction of a kid’s life. Director Steven Spielberg had that moment in “The Fabelmans,” an award-winning film that shows how he first fell in love with movies and how, step-by-step, he became the beloved director he is today. The Oscar nominated movie may inspire the young people in your life to follow their dreams.

‘Good Will Hunting’ (1997)

“Good Will Hunting” is a classic starring Matt Damon, Ben Affleck and Robin Williams. Will (Damon) and Chuckie (Affleck) are bootstrapping their way through life in a run down Boston neighborhood, often fighting their way through troubles. Will works as a janitor at MIT and a professor discovers Will is a young prodigy who should be in college, not on the streets. The movie follows Will as he tries to reach his potential while also figuring out what he wants to do, not what the professor is forcing on him.

'Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania' (2023)

“Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” finally answers the questions that previous Marvel movies have teased regarding what’s actually in the quantum realm and how did Ant-Man’s mother-in-law survive down there for 30 years. In the movie, the superhero’s teenage daughter gets them, Hope (her dad’s wife) and her grandparents all sucked into the quantum realm, which leads to a lot of arguments. But throughout the movie, they find common ground and she ends up saving the day.

‘Elf’ (2003)

“Elf” is a classic starring Will Ferrell (Buddy), who plays a human raised by Santa’s elves before journeying to New York City to meet his biological father. Leaving the North Pole is hard, but so is bringing its culture to the big apple, so Buddy has to decide who he is in this new city.

'Jerry Maguire' (1996)

The title character in “Jerry Maguire” is a knuckle-busting sports agent who suddenly has a change of heart and wants to do things the right way. He’s fired over it, and only one person at the company, a single mother, leaves with him and they start a new company together. They somehow manage to fall in love despite losing clients, money and Jerry’s less than warm words at times.

'Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse' (2023)

Multiverses is the name of the game in Marvel's world these days. In "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse," Miles Morales, who is Spider-Man in the comic book, is thrown to the multiverse. Shameik Moore stars as Miles; Daniel Kaluuya and Issa Rae also star.

'Black Panther: Wakanda Forever' (2022)

"Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" is a eulogy to King T'Challa and his original actor, Chadwick Boseman, who died in 2020. It's also a celebration of Wakandans coming together and finding their new leader as they thwart off new attacks.

'Flamin' Hot' (2023)

Is "Flamin' Hot" based on a true story ? The movie supposedly tells the tale of how a janitor created the Flamin' Hot Cheetos flavor, which is disputed by Frito-Lay. But the movie still has lessons to share .

Rating: PG-3

'Draft Day' (2014)

Kevin Costner and the last Chadwick Boseman star in "Draft Day," the story of how Costner's character, Sonny Weaver Jr., landed the No. 1 draft pick for the NFL's Cleveland Browns in a true uphill battle. Boseman plays Vontae Mack, who Sonny wants to draft, but he has no support from his team to do it since they think there are better players available.

'Freaky Friday' (2003)

"Freaky Friday" is a classic starring Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis as mother and daughter who just are not seeing eye-to-eye. They literally have to walk in each other's shoes to have empathy and more respect for each other.

‘Coach Carter’ (2005)

Samuel L. Jackson plays the title character in “Coach Carter,” a classic film that shows what a high school basketball team can do when their coach believes in them and is a great teacher. Their city, Richmond, California, needs something to believe in and some good news to share. The high school’s potential boy’s basketball championship would be perfect.

‘Honk for Jesus’ (2022)

Sterling K. Brown and Regina Hall shine in “Honk For Jesus,” a parody that points out double standards related to the institution of the church and the pros and cons of being a part of mega churches or smaller, local churches.

‘Akeelah And The Bee’ (2006)

‘High School Musical’ (2006)

The original “High School Musical” set the foundation for all the spinoffs that have since happened (and are available on Disney+). Troy (Zac Efron) and Gabriella (Vanessa Hudgens) fall in love as he reconciles being a basketball player who wants to perform theatre and she prepares for a big science competition.

Rating: TV-G

‘The Greatest Showman’ (2017)

Ideal for families with older kids, “The Greatest Showman” is an irresistible musical starring Hugh Jackman, consummate showman himself, as circus maestro P.T. Barnum. The musical takes its liberties with Barnum’s life story, but — featuring music by duo Benj Pasek and Justin Paul — is likely more entertaining for the editorializing.

‘Holes’ (2003)

“Holes” has a dark premise — but kids will enjoy the movie’s twists nevertheless. The movie is set at a brutal boot camp where teens in need of “straightening out” are sent. There, they dig holes. All day. eventually, they find out what their days of toil are for, but it takes some ... digging.

In one of his most enduring roles, the late Robin Williams plays Daniel Hillard, a dad who, amid a divorce, goes to great lengths to get more time with his kids. He dresses up as a nanny, Mrs. Doubtfire, in the hopes that he can remain a caregiver — and his ex-wife hires him, not knowing who’s really behind that prosthetic nose. As Mrs. Doubtfire, he learns what’s really going on with his family, and how to fix it. The movie’s legacy is continued in a Broadway show .

‘Inside Out’ (2015)

Feel every feeling through this Pixar movie, which alternates between showing a teenage girl’s perspective and the viewpoints of the five main emotions in her brain. “Inside Out” shows how to balance the voices of joy, sadness, anger, fear and disgust — for we all have them inside us.

‘Spy Kids’ (2001)

Carmen (Alexa PenaVega) and Juni (Daryl Sabara) are roped into their parents’ gadget-filled life as spies. All four “Spy Kids” movies are a blend of “James Bond” and kid-friendly hijinks.

‘The Princess Bride’ (1987)

As you wish. With its blend of adventure, comedy and romance, “The Princess Bride” is likely to appeal to everyone in the family. Based on the novel by William Goldman, “The Princess Bride” is about a couple wrenched apart by a king — but the side characters, from Inigo Montoya (Mandy Patinkin) to Vizzini (Wallace Shawn), are largely what render the spoof film a cult classic.

'Elemental' (2023)

People are fire, water, earth or air in "Elemental" and have to figure out how to live together even though they are complete opposites. The experimental movie is a great followup to "Inside Out," prompting questions as it elicits laughs.

'The Little Mermaid' (2023)

The live-action remake of "The Little Mermaid" is spectacular in its emotion, visual effects and storyline. The plot is the same as the original: Ariel the mermaid wants to live on land and trades her voice to the sea witch Ursula for legs. While on land, Ariel falls in love, but has to figure out a way to get her voice back and keep her new legs. But the vivid visuals are more dramatic (and scary!) in live-action form, making it appeal to older kids as well as younger.

‘Queen of Katwe’ (2016)

A 10-year-old chess prodigy (played by the late Nikita Pearl Waligwa) from the slums of Kampala, Uganda becomes a widely recognized chess player and uses the opportunity to escape her impoverished lifestyle. Lupita Nyong’o and David Oyelowo star in this family drama, based on the true story of Phiona Mutesi.

‘Turning Red’ (2022)

“Turning Red” sparked conversation between parents when it premiered on Disney+ in 2022. For all its use of fantasy plot lines — our protagonist is from a line of women who turn into red panda bears — the animated movie takes a real look at what it’s like to be a preteen girl, marked by unabashed enthusiasm, intense feelings and forever friendship.

‘National Treasure’ (2004)

“National Treasure” is the first in a three movie series in which Benjamin Gates (Nicolas Cage) uses U.S. history facts to uncover clues that lead to a treasure. Along the way, he falls in love and grows even closer to his aging father.

‘The Game Plan’ (2007)

‘Over The Hedge’ (2006)

Scrappy woodland friends uncharacteristically wake up in the middle of their hibernation season and have to band together to withstand the bounty that humans in their neighborhood put on their heads.

‘Stuart Little’ (1999)

"Stuart Little," an adaptation of E.B. White's novel of the same name, is a spin on pet adoption. The Little family adopts an anthropomorphic mouse, Stuart, and expects their son, George, to treat him like his real brother. It takes time, as you might expect.

‘Brave’ (2012)

This Scotland-set animated film tells the story of Merida, a teenager set on defying a patriarchal tradition her village follows, and Queen Elinor, her mother who tries at all cost to prevent Merida from achieving her goal. Even though it’s a kid’s movie, the mother and daughter’s rocky relationship is likely to resonate with adults, too.

‘Vivo’ (2021)

Young Andres and his cute pet kinkajou, straight out of the local Cuban rainforest, off to find Andres’ best friend in an eventful road trip adventure. The musical.

Turns out these the speck of dust is home to Whos of Whoville (where “The Grinch” takes place). Horton mounts a campaign to convince others what he hears is real.

‘Despicable Me’ (2010)

‘The Princess and the Frog’ (2009)

‘The Sandlot’ (1993)

“The Sandlot” captures the feeling of childhood, especially for those ‘90s kids who grew up watching it over and over. Set in the ‘60s, the movie follows a group of baseball-loving kids over the course of one pivotal summer.

‘Finding Dory’ (2016)

In the "Finding Nemo" sequel, all the questions surrounding Dory’s parents and short attentions pan are finally answered, and she’s reunited with her family, at last.

'Shark Tale' (2004)

The 2017 and 2019 remakes star Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Kevin Hart and Jack Black.

'Wizard of Oz' (1939)

Follow the yellow brick road through a spirited journey in "Wizard of Oz." This classic musical's favorite characters are Dorothy, the Lion, the Scarecrow and the Tin Man, who each lack something and travel to the Wizard of Oz hoping he can fulfill their requests. Unfortunately, the wizard turns out to be a complete sham and the quartet realizes they already had what they were seeking.

'How to Train Your Dragon' (2010)

Forced into dragon-fighting school, Hiccup actually befriends a dragon and creates a new possibility for his clan: How to train dragons and co-exist.

'Aliens in the Attic' (2009)

"Aliens in the Attic" is exactly what the title suggests. So much for a peaceful family vacation! When a few kids find aliens in their attic, they concoct a plan to drive them out. Piecing clues together, they learn that the aliens can only control adults. So, for the plan to work, the kids must ban together and keep the adults completely in the dark.

Ella Enchanted (2004)

Parents who have wished their kids always did as they were told may rethink that after watching "Ella Enchanted." Matthew McConaughey is a koala bear theater owner who launches a singing contest to save his theater. Reese Witherspoon, Scarlett Johansson and Taron Egerton are among the animals shooting for stardom. "Sing 2," out in 2022, is just as song-filled (and might even be your favorite of the two).

Suzanne Kingston's (Nia Long) two kids are determined to keep her from finding a romantic connection. And while Nick Persons (Ice Cube) has a crush on Suzanne, he's not interested in raising anyone's kids. Nick offers Suzanne and her kids a ride to the airport — but ends up driving them all the way from Oregon to Canada. The road trip is long, not only in miles, but teaches everyone a few lessons along the way. This family comedy has a sequel, "Are We Done Yet" (2007), that's worth watching next.

'Encanto' (2021)

'Cheaper By The Dozen' (2003)

'Ice Age' (2002)

For parents who can handle talking animals (and we know that some simply cannot), "Ice Age" is for you. In the movie, animals across species band together to survive in a changing environment. Ray Ramano and Queen Latifah lead this four-movie series that, despite its name, is nothing if not warm.

'The Parent Trap' (1998)

At the end of the summer, the twins go home with the unknown parent to get their questions answered and reunite their family. This classic stars Lindsey Lohan as both the twins.

'Finding Nemo' (2003)

"Finding Nemo" might cause tears before laughter, and that's thanks to the sad opening scene. In this classic Pixar movie, a clownfish named Marlin tragically loses his wife in an accident that destroyed all their unhatched babies — except one, Nemo. When Nemo goes missing, Marlin has to face his agoraphobic tendencies and venture out into the ocean.

'Matilda' (1996)

Matilda Wormwood (Mara Wilson) is a genius — but hardly anyone seems to acknowledge this. The only bright spots in her life are her beloved books and her teacher, Mrs. Honey (Embeth Davidtz), who's sympathetic to her situation. Matilda's unused brainpower leads her to develop powers that surprise her family and delight the rest of us. The musical adaptation on Netflix is equally memorable.

'Honey I Shrunk The Kids' (1989)

This classic family comedy is a whirlwind of adventure. A scientist (Rick Moranis) accidentally shrinks his four kids with a shrink ray he thought didn't work. When he throws it out, his quarter-of-an-inch-sized kids have to get from the garbage can in the yard back to the house while combatting now-dangerous sprinkler systems and stampedes of ants.

Journey into Shrek's swamp — actually, on second thought, best not to. This Scottish ogre, voiced by Mike Meyers, hates visitors on his land. Follow, instead, as Shrek falls in love with the princess Fiona (Cameron Diaz).

'Ramona and Beezus' (2010)

Joey King and Selena Gomez star as sisters (and total opposites) trying to save their family home. Beezus (Gomez) is an older sister just trying to keep up with all Ramona's shenanigans, all the while trying to secure their family home. The movies is based on a children's book series by Beverly Cleary .

'Bridge to Terabithia' (2007)

In this classic book adaptation, two teenagers (AnnaSophia Robb and Josh Hutcherson) create an imaginary world that magical creatures inhabit. The young adults find freedom and empowerment in this world, a stark contrast to the their home lives. "Bridge to Terabithia" has a notoriously tear-jerking ending — you've been warned.

'The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl' (2005)

What's a lonely boy to do? Create an imaginary world filled with superheroes, of course. In this film, a kid with an overactive imagination is drawn into the world that might be more real than he originally thought.

'Because of Winn-Dixie' (2005)

Families with pets will appreciate "Because of Winn-Dixie," the story of Opal Buloni (AnnaSophia Robb), a 10-year-old girl who finds companionship in a stray dog she encounters outside of a Winn-Dixie supermarket. Through the relationship she has with Winn-Dixie and new friends in the community, Opal helps come to terms with the mom who abandoned her, and connect with the preacher father who she's suddenly living with.

'Up' (2009)

Since "Up" celebrates intergenerational friendships, it's a great pick for grandparents to watch with their grandkids. In "Up," 78-year-old widower Carl Fredricksen (Edward Asner) is about to fulfill his and his wife's lifelong dream of flying, via balloon, to a vista in South America. To his surprise, a kid named Russell (Jordan Nagai) and his dog are in the house when he takes off, disrupting his plans of a solitary, contemplative journey.

'The Lorax' (2012)

12-year-old Ted (Zac Efron) is on a mission: He wants to win over his crush, Audrey (Taylor Swift), and she loves Truffula trees. Unfortunately, that simple gift is impossible to get in their town, which completely lacks vegetation. His efforts to find a tree lead him closer to an explanation of why all the plants disappeared.

best family movies we could be heroes

Snuggling up together on the couch with the kids, an entertaining family movie and a giant bowl of popcorn is hands down one of the best ways to enjoy some quality family time (at least in my humble opinion). But deciding on a film that everybody wants to watch isn’t easy (cue the sibling bickering ).

As an aunt of three very picky young nephews and a teenage niece, I know a thing or two about selecting movies that cater to diverse age groups. So, whether you’re looking for a classic flick (like The Goonies ) or an upbeat musical (like The Greatest Showman or Coco ), there’s something for everyone on this list. And if you prefer to keep your movie night short and sweet, we've got run times, in addition to casting details and where to watch (like Netflix , Prime Video , Disney+ and more). From Moana to Toy Story , here are 83 family movies that all generations will love, including throwbacks from your own childhood. Dim the lights, prepare your snacks and enjoy.

The 57 Best Teen Movies of All Time

1. The Goonies (1985)

  • Suitable for: Kids ages 10+
  • Who's in it: Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Jeff Cohen, Corey Feldman
  • Run time: 114 minutes

This coming-of-age ’80s classic has got it all: hidden treasure, everlasting friendship, edge-of-your-seat thrills and a young Josh Brolin. The bad guys (the thieving Fratellis) are a little scary, which is why I recommend saving this one for kiddies ten years and up.

If you're still having doubts about this one, then take it from PureWow's VP of News & Entertainment, Philip Mutz , who considers it a childhood favorite. He said, "I still remember watching The Goonies with my parents and younger brother as a kid (obviously both of us wished we could be one of the Goonies—honestly, I probably still do). Goonies never say die!"

2. Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile (2022)

  • Suitable for:  Kids ages 8+
  • Who's in it : Shawn Mendes, Javier Bardem, Constance Wu, Winslow Fegley
  • Run time:  106 minutes

Meet Josh, a young boy who’s struggling to fit in after moving to New York City. Everything changes, however, when he befriends a singing crocodile named Lyle. Aside from the star-studded cast, this musical fantasy is heart-warming and funny enough to make any kid smile. Plus, adults will appreciate the solid storytelling and catchy tunes.

3. The Greatest Showman (2017)

  • Suitable for: Kids ages 8+
  • Who's in it : Hugh Jackman, Zac Efron, Michelle Williams, Rebecca Ferguson, Zendaya
  • Run time: 105 minutes

Get into your comfy clothes and bring out the popcorn because this family-friendly musical will keep everyone entertained—for at least an hour and 45 minutes. Hugh Jackman plays legendary Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus showman P.T. Barnum, in this film that follows his rise into showbiz and worldwide fame.

PureWow Associate Editor Chelsea Candelario said, "I'm  a BIG musicals fan  and this one is on the top of my must-watch list. The entire cast is phenomenal. (Um, hello Zendaya and Zac Efron's duet!) And it's such a catchy film to watch with the whole fam."

4. Moana (2016)

  • Suitable for: Kids ages 5+
  • Who's in it : Auliʻi Cravalho, Dwayne Johnson, Rachel House, Temuera Morrison
  • Run time: 103 minutes

The first of many Disney flicks on our list, this musical adventure earns extra points for its killer soundtrack (courtesy of Lin-Manuel Miranda) and total badass heroine (no prince swooping in to rescue her). Follow brave Moana as she sets out to explore the Polynesian seas with the help of demigod sidekick Maui in order to save her island. (Note: There’s a scary-ish scene at the end with a sputtering volcano that you may want to fast-forward for younger viewers.)

PureWow Associate SEO Editor Marissa Wu said, "Dwayne Johnson as Maui was hilarious (like, his theme song is 'You're Welcome,' how can you not laugh?!). But honestly, I stayed for the compelling story of a young woman searching for her identity while trying to save her people."

5. Annie (2014)

  • Who's in it : Quvenzhané Wallis, Jamie Foxx, Rose Byrne
  • Run time: 118 minutes

If your kids like to complain about doing their chores, wait until they see what Annie has to put up with. There have been a few versions of this musical rags-to-riches story, including John Huston's 1982 classic. But I think this 2014 rendition, with its unforgettable characters and catchy tunes, is the best.

6. The Lego Movie (2014)

  • Suitable for: Kids ages 6+
  • Who's in it : Chris Pratt, Will Ferrell, Elizabeth Banks, Will Arnett
  • Run time: 100 minutes

Everything is awesome in this animated movie inspired by the popular toys, especially the stellar cast. Will ordinary construction worker Emmet Brickowski be able to defeat the evil Lord Business from Kragling (i.e., gluing) the Lego universe? Guess you'll have to watch to find out.

According to PureWow Editor-in-Chief Jillian Quint , "This movie is so subversive and weird—full disclosure—my husband and I first saw it in the theater without our kids. But kids also love the bananas plotlines and lessons about creative play. And my kids are ALWAYS singing the 'Everything is Awesome' song."

7. Princess and the Frog (2009)

  • Who's in it : Anika Noni Rose, Bruno Campos, Michael-Leon Wooley
  • Run time: 97 minutes

Tiana’s dream of opening a restaurant is put on hold when she meets Prince Naveen, who was turned into a frog by the evil villain, Dr. Facilier. From gorgeous animation to well-rounded characters, what's not to love?

Assistant Editor Delia Curtis said, "As someone who doesn’t always gravitate toward animated movies, The Princess and the Frog had me hooked!! I loved the jazzy, Southern flare that this film had. The strong, belt-it-out lyrics are fun for the whole family. It’s also a film that adults can appreciate too, with some of those silly sly jokes that only adults will pick up."

8. E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial (1982)

  • Rating: PG-13
  • Who's in it : Dee Wallace, Henry Thomas, Peter Coyote
  • Run time: 115 minutes

Steven Spielberg's classic sci-fi story of an extraterrestrial stranded on planet Earth is pure movie magic. Parents will love the nostalgia throwback (baby-faced Drew Barrymore) and little ones will love the adorable E.T. and his friendship with his earthling family (although keep in mind that there is some light swearing and a few sad moments). Oh, and Reese’s Pieces are a must while watching.

"I fully believe there is no greater children's movie," said Quint. "I've watched with my 7 and 9-year-old, who are really the perfect ages for appreciating the magic while also understanding the gravity."

9. The Secret Life of Bees (2008)

  • Suitable for: Kids ages 13+
  • Who's in it : Queen Latifah, Dakota Fanning, Jennifer Hudson, Alicia Keys

In an attempt to learn more about her late mother, Lily Owens travels to a small South Carolina town. While there, she meets the Boatwright sisters, who take her in and teach her about beekeeping. Based on Sue Monk Kidd's equally compelling novel of the same name, this coming-of-age story deftly tackles racism, religion, loss and forgiveness.

10. Hugo (2011)

  • Suitable for: Kids ages 9+
  • Who's in it : Ben Kingsley, Sacha Baron Cohen, Asa Butterfield
  • Run time: 127 minutes

Your kids may be too young for Goodfellas , but this kid-friendly Martin Scorsese flick is just as entertaining. The ode to cinema is set in a romantic Parisian atmosphere and follows the adventures of Hugo Cabret, a young orphan who tries to solve an important mystery and find a new home. It has enough adventure and laughs to keep kids of all ages enthralled.

daddy day care1

11. Daddy Day Care (2003)

  • Who's in it : Eddie Murphy, Jeff Garlin, Steve Zahn, Regina King
  • Run time: 92 minutes

When Charlie and his friend lose their jobs, they make the drastic decision of turning Charlie's home into a daycare center. Chaos ensues, however, when a rival daycare tries to shut them down.

Curtis, who rewatched the film as an adult, said, "The jokes hit different as an adult because they most definitely have some hidden meaning. I also loved that the story revolves around expectations around gender roles and undoing the stereotypes that women are the only capable caretakers. Plus, I will never get over the scene of Eddie Murphy and Jeff Garlin having a boxing match dressed as a carrot and a broccoli."

12. Stand By Me (1986)

  • Suitable for: Kids ages 12+
  • Who's in it : Wil Wheaton, River Phoenix, Corey Feldman
  • Run time: 89 minutes

This coming-of-age story about four 12-year-old boys in 1950s Oregon is an inspiring tale of friendship, growing up and doing the right thing. Featuring some darker themes (making this film best for teens and up), this moving film strikes the right balance of childhood adventure, grown-up drama and a cute Jerry O’Connell.

13. Toy Story (1995)

  • Who's in it : Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Don Rickles, Jim Varney
  • Run time: 81 minutes

With enough inside jokes for adults, this animated film of toys coming to life is perfect for family movie night. It’s so good, it spawned three sequels and numerous spin-offs, setting you up for the next couple of weekends.

Quint said, "It's hard to believe this movie is from 1995—it feels so current, both in look and in message. When my kids were little, we watched it approximately 1,000 times, and it's still a favorite."

14. The Karate Kid (1984)

  • Who's in it : Ralph Macchio, Noriyuki "Pat" Morita, Elisabeth Shue
  • Run time: 126 minutes

Confession: Mr. Miyagi's iconic "Wax on, wax off" scene still lives rent-free in my head. And LaRusso's final match against Lawrence? Arguably one of the best moments in cinematic history. When Daniel LaRusso enrolls at a new school, he tries to defend himself from bullies and enlists the help of Mr. Miyagi—a repairman who also happens to be a martial arts master.

15. Aladdin (1992)

  • Run time: 119 minutes

A group of best friends are preparing to spend their first summer apart. In an attempt to stay connected, they create a custody schedule…for a pair of jeans.

Curtis, who grew up watching the comedy-drama, said, "When I was a kid, finding confidence in the shape of my body was a tough thing to do in the early '00s. Magazines and TV shows glorified skinny bodies, but I’ll never forget the moment when America Ferrera, the curviest girl in the friend group, tried on the magic pants and they fit her like a glove. It made me feel seen and beautiful. A great film about friendship, connection and self-acceptance."

17. Where the Wild Things Are (2009)

  • Who's in it : Lauren Ambrose, Chris Cooper, James Gandolfini, Catherine O'Hara
  • Run time: 101 minutes

Where the Wild Things Are tells the story of a boy named Max, who travels to a magical island inhabited by creatures called the "Wild Things." Exploring themes of loneliness and insecurity, director Spike Jonze revisits the classic children’s story in a dreamlike atmosphere. Read the book to your 5-year-old, but save the film for your tween.

PureWow Senior Director of Special Projects & Royals, Rachel Bowie , said, "This one is such a hit in our fam! My son is ocean-obsessed and he loves to watch and call out all the sea creatures he knows. Bruce is of course his favorite, being a Great White Shark and all. Read the books first, then snuggle up for multiple weekends of world-class entertainment (there are eight films, plus numerous spin-offs in the works).

Candelario, an avid fan of the franchise, said, "I still remember getting the books as a child and then falling in love with the movies as a teen. Teachable moments, people.

25. Home Alone (1990)

This holiday classic (that makes for great viewing all year round) has got plenty of hilarious hijinks to keep the whole family entertained.

Mutz said, "Watching Home Alone with my dad is still one of my favorite childhood memories. Obviously, I remember enjoying it, but the memory of my dad cackling at Harry and Marv getting utterly destroyed by Kevin still makes me smile."

(And don’t worry—this film is in English and no knowledge of chess is required.)

62. Mary Poppins (1964)

  • Who's in it : Julie Andrews, Dick Van Dyke, David Tomlinson

the formidable cast...there’s a reason why this fantastical technicolor movie is a classic. I'd even go as far as to say that this story of a magical nanny who sweeps into the Banks home to take charge of the children is “practically perfect in every way.”

Bowie said, "We're just introducing this one to our six-year-old, but he cannot stop laughing at some of the scenes—like when Mary Poppins gets the kids to clean the nursery or when Bert (all hail Dick Van Dyke) dances with the penguins who are all trying to impress Mary. We sometimes skip around, but it is a delight that still feels totally timeless!"

63. Elf (2003)

  • Who's in it : James Caan, Zooey Deschanel, Mary Steenburgen, Edward Asner

Is Elf the best Christmas movie of all time? Quite possibly. Meet Buddy, a man who was raised as an elf in Santa’s workshop. When he ventures away from the North Pole and down to New York City in search of his real father, he’s soon confronted with a harsh reality: His dad is on the naughty list.

Curtis said, "If you ever need a silly, festive pick me up, this will do the trick. Will Ferrell running loose through the streets of Manhattan dressed as an elf, a sassy and unbothered blonde Zooey Deschanel and Christmas decorations galore?! What’s not to love? Not to mention learning about the 4 main food groups: Candy, candy canes, candy corn and syrup."

The story follows Adam as he travels back in time to reunite with his younger self. Together, they must eliminate time travel…before it’s too late.

In her honest review , PureWow Senior Editor Greta Heggeness said, "The story is as silly as it sounds, resembling more of a family flick than an edge-of-your-seat thriller. (Disclaimer: It has some action scenes and language references that might be inappropriate for young audiences.) Still, the movie is loaded with nostalgic references that will delight every millennial."

68. Sing (2016)

  • Who's in it : Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon, Seth MacFarlane

Prepare to sing along as this talented group of animal performers rehearse for their next musical extravaganza. The question is: Can Buster Moon convince a busy rock star to join the cast?

Quint said, "When I first showed this to my son (age 5) he freaked out because the animals were 'scary.' But a few years later and upon a rewatch, it's become a family favorite. The songs—ranging from a heart-filled 'I'm Still Standing' to a cheeky 'Shake it Off" are in constant rotation on the family playlist."

From Whitney Houston’s dazzling golden ensemble to Brandy Norwood’s catchy musical numbers, this fairytale remake still stands as one of the best (and most diverse) Cinderella adaptations ever made. I can still vividly recall singing along to "Impossible" and "In My Own Little Corner" while watching it as a kid.

73. Good Burger (1997)

  • Who's in it : Kenan Thompson, Kel Mitchell, Abe Vigod

Who knew that a simple comedy sketch from All That could inspire this timeless cult classic? In Good Burger , Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell steal the show as two employees who go out of their way to save the popular fast-food joint from crumbling.

74. Clifford the Big Red Dog (2021)

  • Who's in it : Jack Whitehall, Darby Camp, Tony Hale, Sienna Guillory

I love a feel-good film that takes me back to my childhood. Inspired by Norman Bridwell’s classic book series, this adaptation is about a young girl who receives a tiny red puppy. But little does she know that her furry friend will turn into a giant ten-foot dog.

FYI, if you need a compelling movie to keep the kids distracted, then this is your best bet. Quint said, "This is the movie I put on for my daughter while administering a two-hour lice comb-out. That's all you need to know."

75. Up (2009)

If you love the classic video game, you'll want to tune in to this nostalgic film that follows Mario and his friends as they battle the one and only Bowser. It features an all-star voiceover cast, including Keegan-Michael Key, Seth Rogen and more.

While Quint isn't a big fan of the film, it's a favorite for her kids. She said, "This movie is objectively terrible, but for some reason kids love it (I have been forced to see it twice in the movie theater) and there's something oddly hypnotic about Jack Black singing about Princess Peach."

83. My Neighbor Totoro (1988)

  • Who's in it: Dakota Fanning, Elle Fanning, Tim Daly
  • Run time: 86 minutes

Miyazaki’s breakthrough film has stood the test of time—namely because of the beautiful animation and the low-key storyline, which brings the children's emotions to light in the most magical way and boasts positive messages about siblings and friendship. Family-friendly movies to stream

The Lion King (1994)

1.  The Lion King (1994)

Older kids might lobby for the ‘live action’ remake with Beyoncé, but parents should hold fast and expose them to the ageless joys of this animated classic from Disney’s renaissance years. In case you need a primer: Simba is the young heir to the kingdom of Pride Lands – that is, until his villainous uncle, Scar, stages a violent coup against his own brother usurps power. Will Simba gain the courage to confront his nemesis and take his rightful place on the throne? No spoilers. No shade on Shakespeare, but this is the superior version of Hamlet . Because lions. Rated G.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001)

2.  Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001)

Kickstart an evening of witchcraft and wizardry with the inaugural story of the beloved Harry Potter series. When a young boy learns about his true identity and magicial powers, he soon finds himself on Platform 9 3/4 en route to Hogwarts, a boarding school unlike any other. Adventure awaits for our budding new wizard, and from that point on, his life—and the world's—is turned upside down. Rated PG.

E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982)

3.  E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982)

It's a simple story, really: Boy meets alien. Boy and alien become best friends. Boy says goodbye to alien when his outer-space buddy has to go home, causing audiences everywhere to sob uncontrollably. How Steven Spielberg tells it, of course, makes a world of difference, as he infuses this family blockbuster with a childlike sense of awe. If you can think of a more magical '80s movie moment than E.T. and Elliott biking past the moon, we'll personally buy you a bag of Reese's Pieces.  Rated PG.

Star Wars (1977)

4.  Star Wars (1977)

What’s the right order to watch the Star Wars movies? Good question! Our advice is to start with the original (and best) and go from there. From its opening shot, in which that whooping great Star Destroyer whooshes seemingly endlessly across the screen, youngsters will be as entranced as if they’ve been caught in a Death Star tractor beam. Timeless heros, scary villains, adorable droids and all the mysteries of the Jedi share the screen for two hours of matinee-style magic that will keep even the most restless youngling busy. Watching the Star Wars movies has become a more complex family rite of passage with every new addition to the canon and spin-off, but even if you’re just in the mood for one trip to a galaxy far, far away, Star Wars will never let you down.   Rated PG.

Queen of Katwe (2016)

5.  Queen of Katwe (2016)

Like the mostly lovely  Akeelah and the Bee  (minus the troubling racial stereotypes), Mira Nair’s  Queen of Katwe  takes one of the least-exciting competitions out there – chess – and transforms it into the linchpin of a triumphant underdog story. Centering on a true story of a Ugandan teen ascending from the slums to the World Chess Olympiads and featuring solid turns from David Oyelowo and Lupita Nyong’o, it’s essentially a sports movie that ditches footballs for bishops.  Rated PG .

The Goonies (1985)

6.  The Goonies (1985)

Goonies never say die ( well, almost never ), and neither does this Richard Donner-directed, Steven Spielberg-produced gem. The '80s comedy follows young tweens as they embark on an adventure to save their home from forclosure. The overly enthusiastic Mikey, the leader of the pack, convinces his buddies that searching for One-Eyed Willy's treasure is a great way to keep their roots, but their quest for the jewels is incredibly dangerous... espesically when the Fratelli crime family catches on!  Rated PG.

The Mitchells Vs. the Machines (2021)

7.  The Mitchells Vs. the Machines (2021)

Gen X-er-friendly Vacation riffs meet Z-er tech preoccupations in a dizzyingly entertaining road-trip caper that’s backdropped by a kind of digital apocalypse. Representing humanity is the chaotic Mitchell family, while Olivia Colman’s ruthless A.I. takes charge of the villainy. One of Netflix’s finest original movies – and definitely one of its funniest.  Rated PG.

Home Alone (1990)

8.  Home Alone (1990)

Who wouldn't want to spend the holidays in the City of Lights? The McCallister clan is more than ready to leave the burbs behind for Christmas in Paris. But things go slightly awry (to say the least) when the realize one very important item has been left at home: their son Kevin. The youngster has no problem having the digs all to himself—especially since he's watching mature gangster flicks, munching on ice cream for dinner and causing chaos. But a pair of burglars set their sights on the gorgeous home, and soon Kevin is left to fend for himself against Harry and Marv, both of whom need a little help in the crime department.  Rated PG.

The Princess and the Frog (2009)

9.  The Princess and the Frog (2009)

Take a trip to Louisiana with this children’s book-inspired story, where smooched amphibians turn into royalty. The bayou comes to life with bright colors, moody environments, mystical interference and top-notch original music that fully embraces New Orleans love of jazz. The Princess and the Frog introduces a long-awaited African American princess who’s no damsel in distress, and you’ll be cheering for her to accomplish her biggest dream—opening a restaurant—the entire time.  Rated G.

Kiki's Delivery Service (1989)

10.  Kiki's Delivery Service (1989)

Studio Ghibli founder Hayao Miyazaki's tale of a young witch finding her way in Scandinavia is unique in almost every sense, from its wide-eyed worldview to its smart-alec cat sidekick (voiced by Phil Hartman in the American dub). But perhaps most spectacular is that this is a film that contains no central antagonist and no actual conflict: It's just a joyous tale of a little girl getting into adventures both grand and small. That's not to say that the film doesn't have tension—the climactic catastrophe is one of Ghibli's most spectacular set pieces—but for the most part, this is a magical hangout movie that delights in small moments. Rated G .

Finding Nemo (2003)

11.  Finding Nemo (2003)

Parents will take a liking to clownfish, Marlin. The sea critter is particularly relatable since he is so protective of his youngster, Nemo. No surprise there! Also unsurprising? Nemo’s defiance. When the little guy goes missing in the deep blue sea—and encounters one large great white along the way—it’s up to Marlin to bring his fella to safety. Kiddos, we hate to tell you, but Mom and Dad know best! Let Nemo’s experience be a lesson to you! Rated PG.

The Baby-sitters Club (1995)

12.  The Baby-sitters Club (1995)

The '90s classic follows a group of young girls who want to turn their baby-sitting jobs into a legit summer camp, but there's a grumpy old neighbor who's determined not to let that happen. Along the way there are family issues, health scares and of course, crushes.   Rated PG.

Coco (2017)

13.  Coco (2017)

Pixar delivers a sparkling, full-throated celebration of Mexican culture that’s filled with songs, colour and life. The twist? Most of the characters are dead. Music-obsessed kid Miguel finds himself in the land of the dead searching for a way out before he’s skeleton-ified forever. Helping (and hindering) his mission are a dazzling array of characters, including his lifelong musical idol, Ernesto de la Cruz, and Héctor, a shady but loveable con-man (con-skeleton?) voiced by Gael García Bernal . Rated PG.

The Wizard of Oz (1939)

14.  The Wizard of Oz (1939)

This technicolor fantasy has been alternately thrilling and frightening audiences of all ages for fast-approaching a century. What’s the secret to its agelessness? The eye-popping colour palette? The catchy songs? The munchkins? The flying monkeys? It’s probably all those things. (Probably not the monkeys, but they’re still pretty terrifying.) But at the core of its lasting appeal is a message anyone from any era can relate to: no matter where you go and what you do in life, there’s truly no place like home, wherever that happens to be.  Rated G.

Frozen (2013)

15.  Frozen (2013)

In the off chance you haven't heard about the sisters who've turned the world of Disney princesses upside down, let us get you up to speed: Anna and Elsa live in Arendelle, and we learn that Elsa has a very unique gift: She's able to turn things to ice. Soon, their beloved land is stuck in an eternal winter. Yikes! That's certainly difficult for those who are affected by the cold. Anna, with the help of her new fella and few other friends, goes in search of Elsa when she goes into hiding. Will she be able to accept these powers? Will the two sisters figure it all out. And, most importantly, will your kids ever stop signing “Let It Go?”  Rated PG.

The Sound of Music (1965)

16.  The Sound of Music (1965)

As the camera swoops down from the heavens toward a young woman running through a field, this angel opens her mouth to exclaim “The hills are a-liiii-ve...”; from that moment on, Robert Wise's Oscar-winning musical has you right in its grasp. Julie Andrews' star was born as soon as she trilled the first line of Rodgers and Hammerstein's score, but this classic really is an ensemble affair: Every one of the von Trapps—from dear old dad Christopher Plummer to 16-going-on-17-year-old Charmian Carr and the youngest, 5-year-old Kym Karath—pitch in to this juggernaut of sing-along fun. To hear the cast belt out staples like “So Long, Farewell” and watch a family band together to prove that it takes more than Nazis to break up a tight-knit clan, is to understand why, generation after generation, this movie continues to be one of our favorite things. Rated G

Inside Out (2015)

17.  Inside Out (2015)

This family flick is one of Pixar’s most creative storylines—prepare for a roller coaster of emotions! The key characters of this sweet movie are actually a little girl’s feelings—Disgust, Joy and Sadness, to name a few—and accompany her on an unexpected move from the Midwest to the West Coast. Clever, charming, heartbreaking and gut-busting funny, this is a movie the whole crew will love!  Rated PG.

Cool Runnings (1993)

18.  Cool Runnings (1993)

It’s true: in 1988, a bobsledding team from the not-particularly-wintry climes of Jamaica qualified to compete in the Winter Olympics. Just about everything else in this Disney production based on that historical footnote is made up or exaggerated. But it doesn’t matter – while indulging in plenty of sports comedy clichés, the mood is lively throughout, filled with genuine laughs and charming performances, particularly from Doug E Doug as the team’s leader and John Candy in one of his final roles. Rated PG

Despicable Me (2010)

19.  Despicable Me (2010)

Steve Carell is the voice of Gru, a suburban supervillain whose seemingly innocuous home sits above a vast underground lair populated by hordes of yellow gibberish-speaking minions. Gru is prone to freeze-raying passers-by and plots to steal the moon, but when he adopts three adorable tow-headed orphan girls it’s not long before their plucky charm and winning optimism begin to melt his cold, cold heart.  Rated PG.

Rated PG.

Encanto (2022)

20.  Encanto (2022)

With a record-breaking soundtrack by Lin-Manuel Miranda, this story of a super-powered, multi-generational Colombian family borrows from the magical realist literary traditions of Gabriel García Márquez to explore the importance of familial bonds and staying true to yourself. The colourful, expressive animation keeps Encanto engaging and intriguing, and with the help of some mystical mishaps it will keep your kids... enchanted.  Rated PG.

A Christmas Story (1983)

21.  A Christmas Story (1983)

Every year, director Bob Clark’s warmly weird comedy climbs the ranks of the most loved holiday movies of all-time. Its appeal is obvious – it’s nostalgic but not sentimental, funny without being cynical, and the anecdotal structure makes it infinitely rewatchable. But it is also, as mentioned, a very weird movie. The leg lamp? The frozen-tongue-on-a-lamp-pole bit? Christmas movies don’t get any more fun. But it’s still a film that can be watched year-round as a snapshot of midwestern American life circa the 1940s - and perhaps as a reminder of your own strange family. Rated PG

The Princess Bride (1987)

22.  The Princess Bride (1987)

One of our favorite feel-good films of all time, the action-packed tale of Princess Buttercup and Farm Boy/Dread Pirate Roberts/Westley (as read to young Fred Savage by his grandfather) steals our hearts with great one-liners, suspense and even some romance. Also...who could forget the fire swamp and Rodents of Unusual Size?  Rated PG.

Toy Story (1995)

23.  Toy Story (1995)

Pixar’s first classic has aged a bit visually, but in every other aspect, it’s as perfect as it was on the day it was released. After three sequels – all great – it’s hard to imagine a time when Andy’s misfit toys weren’t part of our lives, but it’s striking to go back to the beginning and see how fully realised each character and the world of Andy’s Room was straight from the start. The other movies refined the humour, and the CGI got better, but the series was rarely as charming as the original, in which Woody and Buzz initially butt heads, then eventually discover their close bond in the face of a greater enemy: toy-mangling miscreant neighbour boy Sid. Rated G.

The Karate Kid (1984)

24.  The Karate Kid (1984)

You may have heard “wax on, wax off” a hundred times by now—that’s about the amount of times we could watch this movie in a row without tiring. Young Danny finds himself to be the target of a group of bullies, but with repairman (and martial arts master) Mr. Miyagi’s help, he trains to master martial arts and eventually sweep the leg of his foes. Rated PG.

Mary Poppins (1964)

25.  Mary Poppins (1964)

Compared to even 'sophisticated' juvenile fodder, the sheer exuberance of Disney's adaptation of PL Travers' children's classic should tickle the most jaded fancy. Indeed, the film can hardly contain itself with its catalogue of memorable songs, battery of dance routines and strong supporting cast. As for the leads, Julie Andrews, after beating off other pretenders to the role (in part because Walt liked the way she whistled), produced an Academy Award-winning portrayal of the Edwardian nanny whose mad magic seethes beneath a patina of respectability that is, as Mary Poppins' references state, ‘practically perfect in every way.’ But oh, Dick Van Dyke's Cockney accent!   Rated G.

The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)

26.  The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)

To say Jack Skellington is over Halloween is an understatement. The Pumpkin King has had his fair share of frightening hijinks, and he just can't seem to muster up the spooky spirit that one expects from his prestigious title. Instead, Jack finds himself drawn to Christmas, a holiday he hasn't encountered beforehand. He does a bit of research and soon decides to step on Santa's turf. Naturally, his holly jolly plan is nothing short of a disaster. This Tim Burton-produced stop-motion classic delivers all you've come to expect from the artist: odd, yet totally lovable characters. Viewers will also delight in some toe-tapping tunes along the way.  Rated PG.

Mrs. Doubtfire (1993)

27.  Mrs. Doubtfire (1993)

Robin Williams has the power to move us to tears—first with laughter, then with heartbreak. In this popular flick, a funny, carefree husband named Dan must face the music when his marriage starts to take a tumble and his wife asks for a separation. Dan devises a plan to get more time with his kids by going undercover as a nanny, gaining an even closer relationship with his family in the process.  Rated PG–13.

The Sandlot (1993)

28.  The Sandlot (1993)

This coming-of-age tale is a true classic—after all, what’s more American than baseball? Quirky youngster Scottie Smalls (Thomas Guiry) moves to a new neighborhood and manages to make some friends at a local baseball diamond. Together, they get themselves into tons of trouble (and must even band together to retrieve a piece of precious baseball memorabilia). More than a basebal movie,  The Sandlot plays like Stand By Me  for a younger crowd: A love letter to a bygone era that's timeless in its understanding of yourthful aloofness.  Rated PG.

Tangled (2010)

29.  Tangled (2010)

Princess Rapunzel is kidnapped from her crib by a woman intent on staying forever young with the help of the princess’ magical long locks. Rapunzel grows up within the confines of her tower, always wishing she could explore the world and the lanterns that float outside her window. When her endless stream of creative activities no longer satisfies her, she ventures out with a tower thief and begins a journey to discover that the danger never lurked beyond the walls of her tower, but rather within them. Rated PG.

Jumanji (1995)

30.  Jumanji (1995)

While taking a gander around an old mansion, a brother-sister duo discover an old jungle game nestled in the attic. However, the boardgame is much more than that, and soon they'll be on an adventure with wild creatures while attempting to free a feral man—manically played by Robin Williams—who has been trapped inside the game for years.  Rated PG.

Matilda (1996)

31.  Matilda (1996)

Roald Dahl’s sweet bookworm Matilda comes to life in this go-to ’90s movie. Matilda (Mara Wilson) is discouraged from reading—her only escape in a house where she isn’t wanted or encouraged. Though her school is horrible—just imagine the worst principal you’ve ever met—she seeks refuge in learning and in the kindness of her teacher Miss Honey, eventually showing ‘em all what she’s really made of (telekinetic powers and all!).  Rated PG.

How to Train Your Dragon (2010)

32.  How to Train Your Dragon (2010)

Hiccup isn’t like the rest of the Viking clan. He aspires to be like his dragon-hunting father, but when he befriends the Night Fury dragon, he learns a thing or two about this feared creature. And surprisingly, there’s a bigger issue at hand for vikings and dragons alike.  Rated PG.

Moana (2016)

33.  Moana (2016)

Disney has begun teasing the sequel to its insta-classic oceanic adventure, and while it’s a world we’re excited to return to, it’s got a pretty high bar to clear, as the original is one of the liveliest and most unique non-Pixar animations the House of Mouse has produced in ages. Putting a Polynesian twist on the typical princess fable, it tells the story of the strong-willed daughter of a tribal chief who sets off (with her googly-eyed pet chicken in tow) to save her island from a terrible curse. Boasting great songs from Lin-Manuel Miranda and the best performance of Dwayne ‘the Rock’ Johnson’s career as the buff demigod Maui, it’s fun and empowering, with some absolutely wondrous imagery. Rated PG.

Alice in Wonderland (1951)

34.  Alice in Wonderland (1951)

Disney's adaptation of Lewis Carroll's fantasy takes you down the rabbit hole with a whirligig of dazzling color, delightful wordplay (a very merry unbirthday to you, Mad Hatter) and visual absurdities around every corner. Looking for a way to introduce kids to a great work of literature? Go ask Alice.  Rated G.

The Jungle Book (1967)

35.  The Jungle Book (1967)

In Disney's rendition of the Rudyard Kipling story, young orphan Mowgli sets out on a quest to learn more about his identity, with the help of animal companions. The episodic nature of  The Jungle Book is hit or miss—you'd be forgiven for forgetting entire swaths of Mowgli's journey to find his way back to man. But the movie is a marvel of animation, and any time King Louie or Baloo is on screen, the entire affari comes to unforgettable life.  Rated G.

Annie (1982)

36.  Annie (1982)

In the classic musical, red-headed orphan Annie lives with other little girls in terrible conditions under the control of neglectful and vindictive Miss Hannigan, but the pint-sized optimist can’t be beaten down. When a wealthy businessman, Mr. Warbucks, agrees to foster an orphan to improve his public image, he is eventually won over by Annie’s charms. There’s trouble brewing, however, as Miss Hannigan and her seedy friends concoct a plan to get rich.  Rated PG.

The Parent Trap (1998)

37.  The Parent Trap (1998)

A smart, unexpectedly effective remake of the Haley Mills classic, Lindsay Lohan's breakout film retains the original's madcap plot about separated twins who switch places in order to fool their divorced parents into falling back in love. But in updating the story for modern audiences, the film somehow became more iconic than the original thanks to its fantastic performances, wry humor and feel-good ridiculousness.  Rated PG.

Elf (2003)

38.  Elf (2003)

Buddy never quite fit in with the other elves in the North Pole, and he couldn't never pinpoint why. Once he learns that he's part human, part elf, everything changes. During the holidays, Buddy heads to NYC to become aquainted with his family, but he soon realises things aren't always so holly jolly...at least at first. In order to celebrate one of the merriest Christmas movies out there—and seriously, what's better than laugh-out-loud moments with funny man Will Ferrell—we recommend stocking up on candy, candy canes, candy corn and syrup (aka the four main food groups for elves).  Rated PG.

Ratatouille (2007)

39.  Ratatouille (2007)

Ah, to be a chef in the culinary capital of the world! Remy dreams of whipping up delicious dishes in Paris kitchens. The only problem? He's a rat—certainly cause for alarm among diners. However, after crossing paths with the clumbsy Linguini (a human), the duo partner to make his dream become a reality... but not without a few disasters along the way. Rated G.

Spirited Away (2001)

40.  Spirited Away (2001)

A strong contender for best animated film of all time, Hayao Miyazaki's journey into the world of forest spirits vacationing in a mystical bath house is truly one of its kind. Vivid and adventurous (if a little scary for the easily frightened kids), it's a visual feast from start to finish as a human girl finds herself trapped in another realm when her parents turn into pigs. Just go with it: This is a film steeped in dream logic, and it's easy to surrender to its hypnotic artistry and singular storytelling beats. Rated PG .

The Lego Movie (2014)

41.  The Lego Movie (2014)

Recently, a Twitter user went viral with a story about how one man’s infectious, uproarious laughter at The Lego Movie spread through an entire airplane during a cross-country flight. We believe it. In some ways, the animation, from the duo of Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, was the proto- Barbie : a movie based on an iconic toy that turned out to be much sharper, more irreverent and funny than anyone could have guessed. Adults will indeed enjoy the meta-jabs at corporate culture and A-list voice cast that includes Chris Pratt, Will Ferrell and Morgan Freeman, while kids will thrill to the action-packed story of an ordinary construction worker (Pratt) tasked to save the Lego Universe from destruction – as well as the superhero cameos. Rated PG.

The Witches (1990)

42.  The Witches (1990)

A witch convention is certainly not the first thing you expect to come across while staying at a hotel in England with your grandmother. Unfortunately, little Luke's curiosity gets the better of him, and he's caught spying on their evil gathering. It's up to Luke and his Grandmother to fight back against the witches, but it's just a hair more difficult now that Luke has been turned into a mouse. Directed by cult filmmaker Nicolas Roeg, of all people,  The Witches doesn't skimp on the body horror, so be sure to avert easily scared kids' eyes once the ghoulish villains start shedding their skin.  Rated PG.

The Muppet Movie (1979)

43.  The Muppet Movie (1979)

Kermit & Co.'s first big-screen adventure is a wild, meta road-trip comedy in which the frog leaves his swamp to pursue fame, pursued by a Colonel Sanders-esque frog-leg restauranteur all the while. With appearances by countless celebrities (look kids, it's Steve Martin and Mel Brooks), the film translated the absurdism of  The Muppet Show seamlessly to screen, setting the bar impossibly high for any future entries. Simply hearing Kermit sing ”The Rainbow Connection”—still an all-time great movie song in any context—is worth the price of admission.  Rated G.

Up (2009)

44.  Up (2009)

Up 's heartbreaking opening montage rightfully gets all the attention when discussing Pixar's Best Picture nominee, but beyond the tears that open the film is an absolutely bonkers yarn that includes prehistoric birds, sky-high real estate and talking dogs engaged in aeronautic dogfights. Those opening tears are essential, but this is also a story overcoming grief through the healing powers of friendship and adventure.  Rated PG.

Wall-E (2008)

45.  Wall-E (2008)

One of Pixar's most dazzling films,  Wall-E  is a masterpiece of visual storytelling, spending its entire first half worldlessly following a beat-up robot tasked with cleaning up an Earth long-abandoned by humanity. But once Wall-E finds a spark courtesy of fellow robot Eva, things truly begin to soar... both literally—the pair head to space to save humanity and share a dance amid the stardust—and figuratively.   Rated PG.

Free Willy (1993)

46.  Free Willy (1993)

Jesse lands himself in a mess of trouble when he's caught vandalizing a local theme park. As punshiment, he's tasked with working at the attraction. Soon, this becomes something he looks forward to after he develops a close relationship with the Orca named Willy. The two become so close, in fact, that they start doing tricks... which is problematic once the venue's owner catches wind of their friendship.  Rated PG.

Back to the Future (1985)

47.  Back to the Future (1985)

Robert Zemeckis' time-travel classic is one of the weirder blockbusters of its time: This is, after all, the story of a boy whisked back to the past and forced to fend off the lusty advances of his teenage mom. But that weirdness is what makes  Back to the Future such a unique blast: Here's a Boomer-pleasing period piece that manages to be wholly subversive without losing the sight of its fish-out-of-water charms. Plus, that Huey Lewis theme really is timeless.   Rated PG.

Zootopia (2016)

48.  Zootopia (2016)

Perhaps Disney's most overtly political flick, Zootopia leverages the appeal of its ultra-cute anthromorphic animals—led by adorable bunny-cop Judy Hopps and conman fox Nick Wilde—to sneak in a sly story about segregation and racial profiling. That sounds heavy, but the reason  Zootopia works so well is that it seldom beats viewers over the head with its politics, choosing instead to tell an old-school Hollywood noir tale for the kiddie set and letting the subtext do the talking.  Rated PG.

Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971)

49.  Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971)

Your children will be like kids in a candy factory watching this scrumptious adaptation of Roald Dahl’s classic novel about the titular dandy candyman – just hope they’re a little more like Charlie Bucket than Veruca Salt or Violet Beauregarde. With its chocolate rivers and edible meadows, the movie quite literally looks good enough to eat. If it’s been a while, though, be forewarned that there are some genuinely scary moments for wee ones. Shoot, ‘The Wondrous Boat Ride’ musical number is so freaky Marilyn Manson once recorded a cover of it.  Rated G.

Labyrinth (1986)

50.  Labyrinth (1986)

Jim Henson’s cult classic centers on a dark premise: a teenage girl (yes, that’s a very young Jennifer Connelly) is forced to enter a fantasy world and solve a wild labyrinth in order to rescue her baby brother, who’s been kidnapped and is being held by the Goblin King. The plot, though, is really just for director Jim Henson to delight the audience with all manner of strange puppet creatures and musical numbers—the Goblin King is played, of course, by David Bowie, who takes over the movie at several points for some delicious musical interludes. The little ones will be singing “Magic Dance” for weeks.   Rated PG.

Best Kids & Family Movies 2022

Don’t let the TikTok dance fool you: Matilda the Musical is a bona fide bop, but it’s got the heart to match that energy, and critics agree. Topping our list as the best-reviewed Kids & Family film in 2022, Matilda is a fresh musical take on the classic kid’s film from the 1990s, based on the Broadway musical that reimagines the familiar storylines of Matilda with fun, exciting, poppy dance numbers courtesy of comic musician Tim Minchin and a cast of ever-boisterous child performers. It’s also noteworthy that Matilda: The Musical topped one of the most Teflon IPs in the Kids & Family genre, Hocus Pocus . It wasn’t much of a contest, but at least the ’90s kids had something to sing about.

The order reflects Tomatometer scores (as of December 31, 2022) after adjustment from our ranking formula, which compensates for variation in the number of reviews when comparing movies or TV shows.

40 Family Movies That Won’t Have You Fighting over the Remote

From ’80s classics to Pixar favorites, find your next movie night pick on this list.

best family movies

Whether mom and dad need a bit of quiet time, or your girl’s night is in dire need of a relaxing movie to decompress with, below is a list of the 30 best family movies to stream right now. From animated classics to new movies to some of the best kid’s movies we grew up with in the ‘90s and ‘00s , we’ve got you covered!

Cinderella (1997)

best family movies

There are many Cinderella adaptations, but none have Brandy, Whitney Houston, and Bernadette Peters in the same movie, save the 1997 version featuring that exact cast. Cinderella, played by Brandy, toils under her cruel stepmother and stepsisters, until her fairy godmother, played by Whitney Houston, comes to the rescue. I’m sure you know the rest by now, but this is the definitive version of it… at least in my estimation!

Ella Enchanted

best family movies

Ella Enchanted holds up better than most movies we all loved as kids. It stars Anne Hathaway as Ella of Frell, a young girl cursed to do whatever it is people ask of her. Taken advantage of by people her whole life, Ella fights back against the curse bestowed on her at birth, and goes on a journey to find her freedom once and for all. As an added bonus, she’s accompanied by the dashing Prince Charmont, who soon finds he’s in for more than he bargained for.

best family movies

Encanto was just about all anyone could talk about when it was released in 2021. The Madrigal family lives in the mountains of Colombia in a magical place called the Encanto, which bestows the various children of the Madrigal family with special gifts. Mirabel, however, is the odd duck out, until she’s called to save Encanto when danger threatens to ruin her family’s paradise.

best family movies

In the land of Andalasia, Giselle is a lovestruck woman set to wed her prince charming, Edward. On the day of their wedding, however, Prince Edward’s stepmother casts a curse on Giselle and banishes her to the real world, where there are “no happy ever afters.” Trapped in New York City, Giselle meets a grumpy divorce lawyer, and romantic shenanigans ensue.

best family movies

Speaking of Cinderella adaptations, Ever After takes the classic formula and twists it, removing any fairytale elements and instead portraying it as a historical, Renaissance-era drama. Drew Barrymore plays Danielle de Barbarac, who lives in 16th century France and is worked to the bone by her evil stepsisters and stepmother after the death of her family. Despite the familiar elements, the real world setting makes for a fantastic feminist retelling of the tale.

best family movies

Stanley Yelnats is wrongly accused of a crime he didn’t commit, and sent to a punishing summer camp where he’s forced to dig holes in the desert alongside other kids. They suspect there’s something sinister at work in the camp, and through a series of flashbacks and discoveries, Stanley learns the true nature of the work they do, and the unlucky fate that seems destined to befall his family.

best family movies

Did you know Rihanna made an animated kids movie, and it also stars Jennifer Lopez? In Home , an alien race called the Boov conquer Earth and abduct all humans they manage to find, save a singular girl. Tip, played by Rihanna, meets a rogue Boov who defies his people, and together they form an unlikely alliance as they set out to find Tip’s mother.

best family movies

Robin Williams gave the world so much, especially with Hook . In the clever twist on the classic Peter Pan story, the boy who never gets old is all grown up. When Captain Hook abducts his children to lure him back to Neverland, middle-aged Peter reunites with the Lost Boys and re-discovers his inner child (with a little help from his friends.)

Lilo & Stitch

best family movies

Lilo is a young girl who lives in Hawaii with her older sister. One day, their peaceful lives are interrupted by an alien that crash lands on Earth, who Lilo names Stitch. Despite their extraterrestrial differences, Lilo fights to save Stitch from the intergalactic forces that hunt them, and together they learn the true meaning of “ohana.”

best family movies

Luca is a touching tale of a sea monster with a human form, who bonds with the children of a seaside town on the Italian Riviera. They laugh, play, and explore without a worry in the world, until Luca’s identity threatens to overturn the carefree life he and his friends have built.

best family movies

Headstrong Moana is determined to save her people when she discovers she’s been chosen by the goddess Te Fiti to go on a magical quest to save the goddess’ heart. Along the way, she seeks the trailer demigod Maui, who stole the island's heart in the first place, and together they must conquer various challenges before an evil blight claims her homeland for good.

best family movies

Ponyo is another Hayao Miyazaki masterpiece about rising above our differences, and making friends in the unlikeliest places. Goldfish Princess Ponyo has been forbidden from seeing the surface world. Rebellious, she sneaks out and meets a new friend, the human child Sosuke. When her father hunts her down and brings her back, she defies him and in the process of escaping to the world above the ocean, unleashes a torrent of magic that threatens her new friend and his home.

best family movies

Is there a movie more quotable than Shrek ? If I were to guess, probably not. Based on a picture of the same name, it follows the titular Shrek, an ogre who’s evicted from his beloved swamp by a host of fairy tale creatures. When he learns that the evil Lord Farquaad is to blame, he cuts a deal with the menace to save his future bride from a dragon, in exchange for the swamp. However, will Shrek save the future queen from the dragon, or Farquaad himself?

best family movies

In this film definitely based on true events, Michael Jordan is recruited by the Looney Tunes to play a game of basketball against an evil alien theme park owner who they challenged to a match. Bonkers premise aside, the film is a classic for a reason, despite its somewhat questionable reboot in 2021.

Spirited Away

best family movies

Spirited Away is a classic coming of age tale by legendary director Hayao Miyazaki. 10-year-old Chihiro visits an abandoned amusement park with her parents, where they are taken from her as she’s whisked away to a world that’s both familiar and totally alien. Fiercely independent, Chihiro fights to free her family from the clutches of the with Yubaba, meeting various friends and spirits through her time on the other side.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem

best family movies

The latest iteration of these beloved pizza-obsessed crime fighting turtles is perhaps the best yet, specifically because so much of the dialogue was improvised and written by the kids playing the turtles. After years of hiding underground, the crime fighting Ninja Turtles surface in New York City, where they set out to be accepted by their peers while fighting a mysterious crime organization. Funny, funky, and unlike any other animated movie out there, Mutant Mayhem is a comedy masterpiece.

The Little Mermaid

best family movies

The Little Mermaid has never looked better than in the live-action remake of the classic animated story. Ariel, the youngest of King Triton’s mermaid daughters, longs to see the human world. When the undersea witch Ursula offers her a chance at life on land in exchange for her singing voice, she learns that sometimes a dream takes sacrifice, and wishes are not always so simple.

The Parent Trap

best family movies

Every millennial knows The Parent Trap by heart. Now, those same millennials are having kids, and it's high time to pass on the tradition of endless rewatches of the iconic Lindsay Lohan vehicle. Twins Annie and Hallie are long separated, until they are reunited by fate at summer camp, where they concoct an identity swap to meet the parent they never knew growing up, and maybe, reunite the family they never had.

The Princess Bride

best family movies

In the kingdom of Florin, Buttercup is smitten with the farmhand Westley, until he seemingly dies at sea when he goes off to seek fame and fortune. Years later, she’s wed to the crown prince, Humperdinck, only to be captured by bandits with their own motives in stealing away the future ruler of the kingdom. Pursued by a mysterious masked man and her betrothed, what will come of Buttercup indeed?

The Super Mario Bros. Movie

best family movies

Funny enough, The Super Mario Bros. Movie could be considered a remake of the original Super Mario Bros. movie, as brothers Mario and Luigi are plumbers in Brooklyn transported to a magical world of talking turtles, princesses, and anthropomorphic mushroom people. There, Mario is recruited by the fiery Princess Peach to defeat the evil Bowser and save his brother from the Koopa king’s clutches, with a little help from some allies they meet along the way.

The Sleepover is the 2020 Netflix Original starring Malin Akerman and Joe Manganiello . The film is an action-packed family adventure and perfect for parents who love spy and heist movies . While it often relies on overdone tropes, viewers can still expect more than a few laughs thanks to how ridiculous it tends to get.

Siblings Clancy ( Sadie Stanley ) and Kevin's ( Maxwell Simkins ) sleepover with friends goes awry when their parents are abducted because, much to the shock of the entire family, their mother (Akerman) is not the housewife they think she is but in fact, a former thief who is actually in witness protection. 43 'Orion and the Dark' (2024)

Director: sean charmatz.

One of the latest original films from DreamWorks Animation , Orion and the Dark follows the story of Orion ( Jacob Tremblay ), a young boy with a wild imagination that more often than not gives him more fears in life than joy. One fateful night, he meets the embodiment of nighttime himself, Dark ( Paul Walter Hauser ), who comes into his life with hopes of being able to show Orion the wonders of the world and to help him get over his debilitating fears.

While Academy Award-winning screenwriter Charlie Kaufman is much more commonly associated with the themes of dread and existentialism in his works, he's able to make his writing style more approachable and child-friendly through Orion in the Dark . The result is an animated film that, on top of its ingenious premise and stellar visuals, treats its audience of children with much more respect and appreciation than other animated films. Orion in the Dark is a film that has a powerful lasting message at its center, one that is sure to leave a mark on audiences of all ages.

Orion and the Dark

Before viewers know it, Peter is whisked away on a magical path that he never would have expected to go on. The Magician's Elephant is a touching tale of perseverance and bravery for the sake of love. While it doesn't strive to be anything novel, it manages to tug at heartstrings at just the right moments.

40 'Sing 2' (2021)

Director: garth jennings.

The sequel to the widely beloved and successful Illumination film, Sing 2 continues the theatrical stage performance ventures of Buster Moon and his motley crew of singers, with their sights set on performing a new show at the Crystal Tower Theater. However, the culture shock of jumping to the life of the bustling Redshore City proves to be more difficult, as Moon is forced to scrounge for any connections possible in able to give their show a chance. They end up finding an opportunity under the ruthless mogul Jimmy Crystal, after promising to bring back legendary retired rock legend Clay Calloway.

Sing 2 features a lot of the same positives and aspects that made the original film such a success , combining the inherent family-friendly nature of cute animals with the classic singing/talent show premise. The film only continues to strive and evolve the characters of the first film, combined with a variety of new memorable characters mixed into the lineup. It all comes together for the major selling point of the film, which is the massive, color climactic show, filled with fun, upbeat music and a great conclusion to all the characters' stories.

39 'Sonic the Hedgehog' (2020)

Director: jeff fowler.

One of the most successful video game movies of all time , Sonic the Hedgehog sees the famous blue hedgehog making his jump to the big screen for the first time. It tells the origin of the speedster, showing how he ended up on Earth as a child and fostered a new home hiding in the outskirts of the cozy small town of Green Hills. However, after he meets up with a new human friend, Tom, they must team up in order to stop the evil scientist Dr. Robotnik from taking over the world.

While it still takes several liberties and trends of family movie adaptations, Sonic the Hedgehog does an effective job of translating the hectic energy and charm of Sonic as a character to the big screen . The inherent charm of the film as a whole doesn't only come from Sonic, however, as Jim Carrey 's portrayal of the lead villain, Dr. Robotnik, is easily one of his most energetic and memorable performances in decades.

38 'the super mario bros. movie' (2023), directors: michael jelenic, aaron horvath.

Based on the world-famous video game franchise, The Super Mario Bros. Movie adapts the gaming icon to the big screen, telling Mario and Luigi's first adventure in the Mushroom Kingdom. The film sees the dynamic duo of Brooklyn plumbers transported to the kingdom after discovering a mysterious pipe, being separated as well as completely out of their element. Wrapped up in the conflict of this strange world, Mario teams up with the kingdom's Princess Peach in order to take down the deadly and dangerous Bowser.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie was one of the biggest runaway success stories in 2023 , thanks to its ability to stay true to the cheerful energy and excitement that has made the franchise beloved by gamers worldwide. Just as the case with the game series, The Super Mario Bros. Movie is a perfect fit not only for diehard gamers who have kept up with the series since its inception, but for fans of all ages looking for a creative and colorful adventure. It will only continue to cement a legacy as one of the most iconic and defining new family movies, further amplified by its new home on streaming.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie

37 'family switch' (2023), director: mcg.

Harkening back to classic family body-swap movies like Freaky Friday and 13 Going on 30 , Family Switch follows the dysfunctional Walker family, who on a rare planetary alignment end up switching bodies with each other. While they attempt to find a way to return to normal, they are forced to pretend to be each other and live out each other's lives, in the process gaining perspective on what it's truly like to be on the other side of the age barrier.

Family Switch features the same levels of comedic charm and wit as other body-swap films , simply brought up to speed and adapted to the modern era of filmmaking. It makes for a great avenue that allows staple comedic forces like Jennifer Garner and Ed Helms to run wild with over-the-top performances, as well as allowing younger stars Emma Myers and Brady Noon an equal opportunity to shine. Time will only tell if the film will have a similar legacy to that of the great body-swap movies of old.

36 'we lost our human' (2023), creators: rikke asbjoern, chris garbutt.

A new release among family movies streaming on Netflix, We Lost Our Human is an interactive Netflix special that's perfect for families looking for something wholly original. The ambitious interactive movie presents its engrossing story in a non-linear fashion, letting audiences decide what its main characters should do next.

These characters are actually a humorous cat and dog, who are startled to wake up one day to find that all the humans (including theirs) are gone. It's up to fans to help them navigate the world to find them, or even destroy the universe completely. The fun and weird journey on Netflix provides a totally unique viewing experience that can be enjoyed by the whole family.

35 'Enola Holmes' (2020)

Director: harry bradbeer.

Sherlock Holmes' (played by Henry Cavill ) teenage sister gets the spotlight in Enola Holmes . The titular mischievous and witty sleuth uses her talents to track down her missing mother, but she soon encounters a rebellious lord who obviously needs her help. Enola must learn to overcome obstacles, both external and internal, to survive the tricky situation.

With the lead character masterfully portrayed by Millie Bobby Brown , Enola Holmes is effortlessly inspiring and tons of fun to watch with the family. It sends a strong message for young girls especially and reminds them that they can grow up to be whatever they want (no matter what anyone says).

Enola Holmes

34 'the spongebob movie: sponge on the run' (2020), director: tim hill.

The third feature film based on the worldwide phenomenon television series, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run sees SpongeBob and Patrick going on a wild road trip across the ocean in search of SpongeBob's lost pet, Gary. Their journey has them encountering a number of wild and unpredictable characters, ranging from dangerous Western outlaws to a quirky malfunctioning robot, as they reach their final destination of Atlantic City. Realizing that Gary has been snail-napped by King Poseidon, it becomes up to SpongeBob and Patrick to save Gary.

While the previous SpongeBob films were mostly 2D animation in their execution, paralleling the art style of the original series, Sponge on the Run makes an experimental delve into modernization with its animation style. The film's original stylized 3D style does a great job at reflecting and modernizing the style and fluid 2D animation of the show into 3D, able to greatly capture the manic energy and charm of the show. The film's comedy and style are filled with the classic charm and wit that has made the series such a phenomenon for decades .

The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run

33 'dc league of super pets' (2022), director: jared stern.

A more child-friendly animal counterpart to the classic Justice League heroes, DC League of Super-Pets follows the story of Krypto the Super Dog, the trusted canine companion of the man of steel himself. After Superman and the rest of the Justice League end up being kidnapped by Lex Luthor, Krypto finds himself teaming up with an array of shelter animals who have achieved superpowers of their own. With the help of his new companions, Krypto may just have a shot at defeating Lex, who is joined by his own nefariously evil pet, Lulu the guinea pig.

It's no secret that superhero movies have been a defining trend of films in recent memory, with DC League of Super-Pets being one of the few examples of creating a massive superhero story specifically for families . On top of featuring the standard action and excitement that comes from these films, DC League of Super-Pets also specifically focuses on comedy, both slapstick and simplistic enough for young children, as well as deep-cut satirical jokes and references for fans of DC in general.

DC League of Super-Pets

32 'mixtape' (2021), director: valerie weiss.

Mixtape is without a doubt one of the best Netflix Original films to date. Mixtape is a quirky, heartwarming, and at times heartbreaking coming-of-age film about a young girl desperately trying to find a connection with the parents she lost as a baby. The film has received rave reviews from critics and viewers alike.

Set in 1999, Mixtape is the story of Beverly ( Gemma Brooke Allen ) a 12-year-old girl who lives with her grandmother Gail ( Julie Bowen ). Since losing Beverly's mother in a car accident, Gail has lived a quiet life as a postal worker and is extremely protective of her granddaughter preventing her from ever having too much fun. But Beverley's life gets a lot more exciting when she discovers a mixtape that belonged to her parents. When the mixtape is destroyed by her Walkman she goes on a quest to find the songs in an attempt to recreate it. However, her pursuit leads to more than she could have dreamed of, making new friends along the way and discovering a love of music.

31 'Wish Dragon' (2021)

Director: chris appelhans.

One of many standout original animated feature films from Netflix , Wish Dragon follows the story of Din, a young teen who is longing to reconnect with his childhood best friend, who now lives a much more luxurious life than him. He soon gets his chance when he ends up in possession of a magical teapot containing a wish-granting dragon, finally giving him the opportunity to live out his wildest dreams.

While the film certainly shared a number of similarities with other animated films such as Aladdin , there's enough heart and visual distinctions present to make Wish Dragon its own stand-out experience . The building upon the relationship between Din and Lina especially is something that the film does spectacularly, as well as the creativity and boundless potential of Long the dragon's wish-making powers.

30 'Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile' (2022)

Directors: josh gordon, will speck.

Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile sees the classic children's book character taking the leap to live action on the big screen, seeing the Primm family discovering the giant singing reptile living in their attic. While initially terrified at the prospect of one of nature's deadliest predators living in their domain, each member of the family finds their way warming up to Lyle and his whimsical charm. The entire family soon comes together to help Lyle get over his fear of stage fright, so that he can finally show off his natural singing talent to the entire world.

Many "CGI children's characters in the real world" stories have been released over the years, ranging from the successful Sonic the Hedgehog to the less-than-desirable The Smurfs . Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile is one of few that leans into the absurdity and inherent comedy of its presence, able to get a great deal of comedy and charm from playing off of the wild antics of a big cartoon gator. Combined with some genuinely great musical numbers, Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile is a pleasant surprise and is easily one of the best new kids movies on streaming right now.

29 'Trolls Band Together' (2023)

Director: walt dohrn.

The third film in DreamWorks's widely successful Trolls trilogy, Trolls Band Together sees the unexpected return of Branch's long-lost brother, John Dory, requesting help to save their kidnapped brother, Floyd. Despite the differences that led to the brothers being separated in the first place, Poppy, Branch, and John Dory travel across the world in search of the other brothers to create the perfect team to save Floyd. It proves to be much more dangerous than expected, as the vicious Velvet and Veneer are planning to use Floyd and the brother's troll magic as fuel for their pop star careers.

Trolls Band Together excels greatly in the same vein as the previous film, combining its wildly creative and colorful world with a mix of modern pop songs and a wide array of celebrity voices. While not as large in scope as the previous film, the introduction of Branch's long-lost brothers adds an effective layer to the dynamic of each of these characters, as well as allowing for another wave of notable celebrity voices. While the series certainly isn't everyone's cup of tea, it's widely been considered the best of the trilogy , and is a must-watch for fans of the previous two films.

Trolls Band Together

28 'good burger 2' (2023), director: phil traill.

A legacy sequel to the 90s classic, Good Burger 2 follows Dexter Reed, now an adult, but once again facing financial problems after one of his inventions fails. However, he is able to find solace in having a job at Good Burger once again, with former coworker and best friend Ed happy to welcome him back into the workforce. Now the manager of Good Burger, Ed has made sure that it continues to be one of the best burger places in the area, something that has made many enemies planning its downfall.

While legacy sequels for the most part falter and fail to be able to recapture the same energy and charm of the original film, Good Burger 2 does a half-decent job at tapping into the wild 90s energy of the original . Kel Mitchell and Kenan Thompson are as great of a comedic duo as ever, bouncing off of each other constantly with genuine chemistry and friendship that elevates the entire film. The film completely understands the nonsense and non-serious nature of the original Good Burger , allowing it to delve into even goofier territory with no worries about alienating audiences.

Good Burger 2

27 'we can be heroes' (2020), director: robert rodriguez.

From the acclaimed director of the Spy Kids franchise, Robert Rodriguez 's We Can Be Heroes tells the story of the quirky children of the world's greatest superhero team. However, after an alien invasion ends up leading to the capture of the world's heroes, it soon becomes up to the children to band together and find a way to break their parents out of alien captivity. The kids initially are at odds with one another thanks to their conflicting powers and lifestyles, but they soon find it within themselves to come together as a cohesive unit in order to save their families.

We Can Be Heroes comes complete with all the classic charm and style of Rodriguez's other family films , simply updated to the modern era with the capabilities of modern technology and effects. While this style of over-the-top and effects-heavy filmmaking isn't everyone's cup of tea, it fits perfectly in line with the wild and entertaining style that defined films like Spy Kids and Sharkboy and Lavagirl .

We Can Be Heroes

26 'jungle cruise' (2021), director: jaume collet-serra.

Inspired by the Disney ride of the same name, Jungle Cruise is a blockbuster, family comedy starring Emily Blunt and wrestler-turned-actor Dwayne Johnson . In it, brother and sister, MacGregor ( Jack Whitehall ) and Dr. Lily (Blunt) Houghton acquire the services of a charismatic skipper, Frank Wolff (Johnson) to guide them through the Amazon River in search of the Lágrimas de Cristal Tree and its flowers which have healing properties. Their quest proves to be much more dangerous than anticipated, filled with adventure and supernatural mystery.

Jungle Cruise is a wacky, wild, and sometimes heartfelt adventure film that has something to offer for audiences of all ages. While it doesn't do much to the adventure genre's tried and tested formula, kids will undoubtedly love the antics in the forest and adults can appreciate the visual effects and wholesome story.

Best Family Movies on Netflix to Watch with Your Kids

I magine it's Saturday night, and you are looking for a fun night with your family — what are you doing? A perfect answer to that is a family movie night with a feel-good movie . But which movie should you watch that is both kid-friendly and enjoyable for adult audiences? Netflix is a great place to start.

Update July 30, 2023: This article has been updated to reflect the recent list of films streaming on Netflix.

While they are better known for their original movies and their broad range of TV shows and reboots, Netflix also has a great selection of family-friendly movies. When Disney+ opened as a streaming platform, they took with them many of the Disney-produced family-friendly films from Netflix’s catalog. With spaces to fill, Netflix surged ahead and brought back a variety of family films worth watching. As of July 2023, their film library ranges from classics like Hook to Netflix Originals such as Klaus . Here is a list of some of the best family movies on Netflix to watch with your kids on your next family movie night.

Rescued by Ruby

Starring Grant Gustin of the CW's The Flash , Rescued by Ruby is a heartwarming story for families who love dogs. A state trooper named Daniel O'Neil has always dreamed of joining an elite K-9 unit, but he's told there are no German shepherds available to pair with him. Deciding to prove he can make the cut, Daniel decides to visit his local animal shelter, where he's convinced to adopt a border collie mix named Ruby, a high-spirited dog that has repeatedly been adopted and returned for bad behavior.

Related: Here's What Makes Detective Pikachu Such a Great Family Movie

Perhaps the best part of this movie is that it's based on a true story, but there's a lot to enjoy here. It's fun to see Gustin in a role other than as The Flash, and he does well as a flawed man determined to overcome the obstacles to his dream. Plus, there's an excellent message here about found family and second chances, especially when it comes to rescued animals.

Stuart Little

The 1999 hit family film Stuart Little is available on Netflix for families, or children, not familiar with this beloved adaptation of the book based on the same name. Stuart is a human-like mouse living in an orphanage when Frederick and Eleanor Little visit, hoping to adopt a brother for their son, George. A disappointed George refuses to accept Stuart, and Stuart struggles to fit in to his new family. Matters only get worse when Snowbell, the family cat, targets Stuart, unhappy he's now a pet to a mouse.

Stuart Little is a great watch for parents with foster or adopted children. It delves into the complicated feelings adopted children feel while delivering an entertaining story, adapted by M. Night Shyamalan.

The Boss Baby

The Boss Baby is a great film to watch before diving into the Netflix TV series based on the animated hit movie. A 7-year-old boy named Tim becomes suspicious when his parents bring home his new baby brother, who acts normally around their parents but transforms into a suit-wearing boss baby whenever adults aren't nearby. Eventually, Tim learns about Baby Corp, where babies come from. Tim's baby brother has been sent on a secret mission to find out why more and more people are choosing puppies over having babies.

The Boss Baby is funny and endearing, and children skeptical of having younger siblings will get a kick out of this fantastic tale. There are also plenty of jokes only adults will understand, making it great for Mom and Dad, too.

The Mitchells vs. The Machines

A quirky and slightly dysfunctional family accidentally finds themselves in the midst of a robot apocalypse. Katie has recently been accepted into film school and her dad insists the entire family, including their pig, drives her. On this trip, the Mitchells run into all kinds of machines that have been released to capture the humans. It's up to the Mitchells and two simple-minded robots to save humanity.

Both humorous and heartwarming, The Mitchells vs. the Machines was recently nominated for an Oscar for Best Animated Feature Film. With an emphasis on being creative, unique, and loving yourself, this film uses bright animation and quirky characters to help boost this film on your movie night watch list.

The Sea Beast

Set in a time and world where giant water creatures fill the ocean, the Netflix original film The Sea Beast begins after their attacks on ships and coastal towns have left many orphans behind, including Maisie, who dreams of becoming a monster hunter like her mom and dad. After stowing away on his ship, she manages to team up with her monster-hunting hero, Jacob (voiced by Karl Urban), who reluctantly becomes a surrogate father to the courageous young girl. The question of whom the real monsters are becomes a prominent theme in this animated adventure suitable for the whole family.

Related: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Why The Original Film is a Perfect Family Watch

This sleeper hit for Netflix also earned a nomination at the Oscars for Best Animated Feature, which attests to its quality. If your family enjoys fantasy, adventure, and stories about found families, this is one not to miss.

This family comedy is perfect for parents and their children to watch together. Starring Jennifer Garner and Jenna Ortega, Yes Day follows a mom and dad who almost always tell their children no. When their oldest daughter asks them if they've heard of Yes Day, they agree to say yes to anything their children request for 24 hours to prove they can still be fun.

Based on the bestselling book of the same name, the movie is a fun and relatable watch for both parents and kids. There's even been talk of a sequel in the works.

Nightbooks originally released close to Halloween, but there's no reason families can't enjoy this whimsical and (child-friendly) spooky tale year round. A modern take on Hansel and Gretel, it features a preteen boy named Alex who is lured into the apartment of a witch, who threatens him if he doesn't tell her a new story each night. Alex encounters another child named Yasmin being held captive, and together they plot their escape.

While some scenes might be too frightening for very young viewers, Nightbooks should be suitable for anyone who could handle the equally moody Coraline . Overall, it's a great watch for families who love the style of Tim Burton.

Clean Family Friendly Movie Reviews

Help us start a list of Clean Family Friendly Movies!

One of the goals of Clean Cut Media is to raise awareness of the influence of media on our culture and our Worldview. It is not an easy task as by nature much of what is written pushes up against what our culture would consider the norm. However, in addition to this primary goal, Clean Cut Media aims to also be a resource where people can come to find fresh perspectives and reviews on movies, music, tv shows, and other media.

It’s hard to find truly clean movies suitable for children

There are so many ways to watch or rent a movie. From Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, to Youtube, you can stream movies online at a flick of a finger, yet it is not an easy task to figure out which movies are wholesome, safe, and free of sexual innuendos, sex scenes, violence, vulgar scenes, and bad language. It’s nearly impossible outside of a few children’s movies (and even many of those are questionable). As someone who spends tons of time with youth students myself, it isn’t easy to find a definitive list of clean movies I can check out.

So I’d like to start a list of Clean Movies as well as Clean Family Friendly Movies so those who will find this post can have a list of movies they know is safe to watch both for their children and for themselves. Also, please contribute popular movies that seem safe at first glance.

Please Share Your List of Clean Movies & Clean Family Friendly Movies

Here is what you can do.

Comment below with the Names of Movies that you consider to be clean and/or family safe.

Please label them as Family Friendly / Clean

Clean Movie: This means no sex scenes, no or minimal sexual innuendos, no or minimal bad language, no excessive violence/gore, and no bad message!

Family Friendly: Basically would you take your 10-year-old daughter to this and be perfectly comfortable with what she is taking in?

Exceptions : I realize finding perfectly “clean” movies is really hard, so if you know of any movies that violate a portion of these categories, just notate it next to the name. You MUST note any amount of bad language, sexual innuendos, sexual scenes, bad message, violence – think about parents of very young kids who may want to use this list to choose a movie. The more information the better. Also if you know the RATING, please note it as well.

Please also contribute movies that come off as family-friendly but you found to be unacceptable as well as any popular movie titles! (Ex. The Later Shrek movies are NOT for kids! Tons of sexual innuendos and jokes). If you see movies below that do not have proper warnings, let us know!

Below are some samples to start off with. Please follow the general format.

I’ll update this as people comment. Red = Not Family Friendly

List of Clean / Family Friendly Movies [+ Unclean “Children” Films]

Thanks for your comment. I had written this series down to watch, but am deeply offended by cursing in the names of God and Jesus. Please, people, let us know if your recommendations of so-called “clean” entertainment include profaning the names of God and Jesus.

This list of movies will help those that are Christians but their faith is falling, and those that are in marriage but it seems as things are not working out.

each of this movies when you watch them they draw you closer to God so that we can understand that Jesus loves us and that is why he did what no man on earth has ever done for us.

Jesus died for us so that in him we can leave and in him we can have life and life in abundance, but the devil has come to kill, still and destroy. that is why he is also using media(movies) so that he can destroy us.

that is why we have people that can’t make a sentance without swearing all that came from the devil through media.

I respect the people who started this chart so that we have restore what the devil has destroy.

no matter how good or great the movie is the fact that they are swearing that destroys you, and change you.

I WISH YOU THE VERY BEST!

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

The Back to the Future series IS NOT at all clean, language free, suitable family movie! Lilley Redman thought it was.

Here is a list of just the bad language and swearing alone example:

LANGUAGE IN BACK TO THE FUTURE (First movie in the series) 5 “s” words, 12 damns, 8 hells, 3 “ass” words (1 used with “hole”), 3 S.O.B.’s, 6 uses each of “Oh my God,” and “Jesus,” 3 uses of “G-damn,” 2 uses each of “Jesus Christ” and “My God,” and 1 use each of “God” and “Oh God.”

Thanks for removing it from your above listing! 🙂

Blind Side is a great movie but it not “clean”.

Here is the proof:

LANGUAGE At least 2 slang terms for sex (“tap”), 2 for breasts (“t*ts” and “t*tty”), 6 asses, 5 hells, 3 damns, 1 crap, 1 S.O.B., and 1 use each of “Good Lord,” “Mother of God” and “Oh my God.”

ALCOHOL OR DRUG USE The father of Michael’s friend states that Michael’s mom is on the crack pipe. Leigh Anne has some wine. A thug drinks from a brown paper bag, and we then see others doing that as well. Leigh Anne and her friends have wine with lunch. Some miscellaneous people have wine in a restaurant. After Leigh Anne’s family have their Christmas photo taken with Michael, they get a call from her cousin who states he’s had about five cold ones (beers), and asks if they know there’s a “colored” boy in their photo (played for laughs). We hear that Michael’s mom has a dozen or more kids, has a record of drug arrests, and that Michael is a ward of the state due to being taken away from her when he was 7. Michael’s mom informs Leigh Anne that she might have some wine in the kitchen, but Leigh Anne declines. We see a wine bottle on a table in this scene. We see a glass of wine on a table in Leigh Anne’s house. A thug/drug dealer tells Michael that the latter’s mom comes by about this time of a day for a little taste. He then says he’ll get Michael a “forty” (big bottle of malt liquor) and then has one for each of them. Michael says that his mother would tell him to close his eyes for the bad things that occurred, including her taking drugs.

“WE ARE MARSHALL” IS NOT CLEAN:

At least 7 “s” words, 10 hells, 5 damns, 3 asses, 2 versions of crap, 2 uses of “Oh my God” and 1 use each of “G-damn” (with another incomplete one), “Jesus” and “My God.”

This list is excellent. Thank you for this service. I don’t know that i can contribute, but i just wanted to offer a solution for if you find a movie or a scene border-lining inappropriate. I get all of our movies from a website called cleanmediaworks.com. Obviously use discretion when considering what to allow your kids to watch. sometimes i pre-view a movie, even if it has been edited for content, before letting my kids see it. I just like that my 12 year old daughter is able to watch Titanic with me, and i don’t have to worry about those few “cover your eyes” scenes. Anyway, just thought i’d share.

RAISING ARIZONA IS NOT CLEAN, there is 2 shots of pornographic magazenes and one tward the end of the movie is very pronounced.

Thank you for providing this list. It is a blessing.

Home alone has a few bad words in it. Please understand I love this movie, it’s so funny and adorable! I was really sad to hear them. I’d never noticed them before I gave my life to Jesus, but they are there. Have any of you heard of something called vidangel? It’s sole kind of filtering service. You would think with all the technology we have, that we could filter out the scenes and l language that – for me – ruin an otherwise awesome show.

Ants has some profane words in it.

Just thought I would let you know the name of the movie is Cocoon Not Cacoon and there is a little bit of nudity in it.

The help someone eats poop and is racist Miscarriage STD

Fried green tomatoes cannibalism language and a lot of talk about sex

“CLEAN”movie. “Secretariat”. Possibly the best race horse who ever lived.

This is just a simple comment. When I first started buying movies…I thought “I’ll get a PG13 movie to avoid bad language”. I have heard even “GD” in these movies. That’s over the top. I throw them away.

Just watched Zathura. Looked at your comment on the movie and did not see any reference to the handful of very blatant uses of foul language used by kids. Also, the teenager was scantily dressed.

I Highly disagree that Schlindlers List should have the “X” marked for clean. There are multiple uses of bad language and more than one sex scene. Please mark as RED.

thanks for your contribution. done.

a bug’s life should be rated R and marked as RED; the grasshoppers want to slaughter the ants and the queen ant is far oversexualized for my 6-yr-old’s young God-loving eyes; God have mercy on the people who animated this movie

The Truman Show- there is a general anti God / anti Christ, Atheist message in this movie where the “creator” of the TV show and the mini world that the characters live in is called “Christof” and is portrayed as selfish and controlling whereas the hero, called “Truman” slowly becomes aware of his fake world and finally rejects the rule of Christof. There are too many blasphemous instances in this movie to mention. This is deeply offensive. Avoid

I wanted to find out if bad language includes blasphemy? It seems literally impossible to find anything to watch without blasphemy.

Great article, I reall like your style of writing

THABO AND THE RHINO CASE

"family african adventure mystery".

movie reviews family friendly

What You Need To Know:

Miscellaneous Immorality: Children think a Chinese man is the bad guy, and they’re chastised twice for having a “racist” attitude, and boy reads an online description of superstitious Asian beliefs about the health benefits of rhino horns, including as a “sexual enhancer.”

More Detail:

THABO AND THE RHINO CASE is a mystery adventure about a young boy on a nature preserve in Africa who wants to be a private detective and gets together with his friends to find the poacher who killed a mother rhino and cut off her horn to sell overseas. THABO AND THE RHINO CASE is a fun family movie with adorable, funny and exciting moments and will help children develop a love for the people and animals living in the African savannah, but two of the three older children have parents who died, and the bad guy threatens the children.

The movie opens with Thabo preparing the tour van for his Uncle Vusi, who manages the nature preserve. Thabo’s called away from washing the van when Agatha, the middle-aged German widow who donated the land for the preserve, asks for help. Thabo rushes to her house, but it turns out to be a false alarm. Agatha wants Thabo to come with her to meet her granddaughter, Emma, who’s flying in from Germany on the small transport plane that brings tourists to the preserve. Before they leave to meet Emma, Agatha gives Thabo a genuine lock pick. “Every private detective needs one,” she says.

Emma rides with Thabo and his uncle on the tour with the other tourists. Sadly, after they see some giraffes, impalas, elephants, zebras, and lions, they come across a dead mother rhino with her horn cut off and her baby crying nearby. The uncle calls off the tour to inform the local police inspector.

Thabo, Emma and Thabo’s friend, Sifiso, ride with Thabo’s uncle and the Inspector to inspect the crime scene. They find some boot tracks at the scene. Sifiso says the boots look like ranger boots. One of the bootprints has a long crack running through it. The Inspector takes some photos of the tracks. Thabo does the same with his smart phone.

Back at the lodge, Uncle Vusi and his men bring back the baby rhino, who’s been sedated. They place it in a pen made of tree limbs.

The Inspector asks Uncle Vusi to see his rangers’ work schedules. No one was working that morning before the tour. However, when the Inspector asks Vusi to show him the bottoms of his boots, they find out that Vusi’s right boot has a crack in it, just like the bootprint near the dead rhino.

The Inspector arrests Vusi, but he denies killing the rhino and cutting off its horn. Thabo, of course, believes his uncle.

So, Thabo and the other children search for the real culprit of the rhino killing. They try to inspect the boots of the other rangers. They then discover another bootprint on Thabo’s phone. The bootprint shows the design of a rising sun. Thabo suspects the Chinese tourist on the tour because he was asking his uncle about rhinos.

Can Thabo and his friends solve the Rhino Horn Murder Case and find proof to show that Thabo’s uncle is innocent?

THABO AND THE RHINO CASE is based on a book by popular German children’s author Kirsten Boie. THABO is a fun family movie with adorable, funny and exciting moments. There are some sad moments too, however. Besides the murder of the mother rhino, the movie mentions that the parents of Thabo’s friend died of AIDS, as did Thabo’s mother. Agatha explains to her granddaughter that, although there are cures for the disease, not everyone can get access to such cures. Thabo’s friend takes care of his younger brother and sister, nicknamed Pilot and Lemonade, respectively. The little girl playing Lemonade has the funniest line in the movie, which comes at the end.

THABO AND THE RHINO CASE has a pro-family worldview. In addition, Thabo and his friends are looking to find the real poacher and to clear the name of Thabo’s uncle. So, the movie values truth and justice. The movie also includes cute scenes where Emma tries to get the baby rhino to drink some milk to keep up its strength. Everyone loves puppies, kittens and other baby animals, and a baby rhino is no exception to that rule.

Unfrosted isn't fun for the whole family (but it's still fun and flavorful)

Skip the Pop-Tart movie, but don't skip actual Pop-Tarts.

By Reed Gaudens | May 3, 2024

UNFROSTED. Hugh Grant as Thurl in Unfrosted. Cr. John P. Johnson/Netflix © 2024.

While promoting his feature directorial debut Unfrosted for Netflix, comedian Jerry Seinfeld made some comments about the state of comedy that inevitably made headlines and created ire. Although others might have agreed with his statements, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia star Rob McElhenney understandably, and rather casually, did not .

Seinfeld said during a podcast interview with The New Yorker said television comedy isn't what it once was and couldn't be the same as it was, which according to the Seinfeld star and creator is "the result of the extreme left and P.C. crap, and people worrying so much about offending other people." (It's worth noting that Seinfeld has not created or starred in a scripted TV sitcom since his ended in 1998.)

It's slightly ironic then that Seinfeld's film Unfrosted, which at face value appears to be a colorful and silly family-friendly comedy about the race to get Pop-Tarts on shelves in the 1960s, features visual gags and innuendos that don't seem to have been sanitized for the sake of worrying about offending younger audiences. Sure, the off-color cereal jokes will save comedy.

All being told, Unfrosted earns its PG-13 rating, which has been given to the film for suggestive references and language. Wondering whether it's the right pick for family movie night? Wondering whether it's worth the watch at all? Here's what you need to know about the content of the film along with a spoiler-free vibe check before adding it to your watch list.

Unfrosted glazes over maturity, misses family-friendly

While the movie isn't a nearly as inappropriate as an R-rated spoof comedy with profanity flying left and right (think star Melissa McCarthy's hilarious cop comedy The Heat co-starring Sandra Bullock), some of the innuendo-laced language definitely walks the line. There's nothing explicitly distasteful that children will understand, but for that reason, kids probably won't be totally captivated by every scene.

For instance, there's a sequence where an "in memoriam" is held for cereals that are no longer in circulation, and there's an image of a cereal box featuring an older woman under the name "Grandma's Holes." Obviously, children will not fully comprehend what the joke is or what it means, but some parents likely won't want their kids repeating that particular fake cereal name. Again, comparatively to other movies, this joke is rather tame.

As the rating explanation alludes, there are lines of dialogue and other visual gags that walk the line of double meaning, which is very emblematic of Seinfeld's style of comedy as seen in his eponymous sitcom. In one scene, Max Greenfield's character says to Jim Gaffigan's, "I have been eating you for years." He means his food, but... yeah.

Another scene features Gaffigan's character explaining milking cows, which he said farmers did for fun. "It was just a gross white liquid," he says over an image of a farmer milking a cow and the milk spraying on another man. The innuendo there is apparent and funny to some audiences, though, as Seinfeld himself claimed in his New Yorker interview, to others not.

Those are just two early examples of the film's sense of humor, and if those jokes don't align with your particular sense of humor, it's probably best to skip Unfrosted . On the other hand, the movie as a whole is extremely fun and makes good on its silly, quirky, and colorful promise. The cast, which is chock full of top comedy talents, succeeds in seeing Seinfeld's vision through.

Overall consensus: Unfrosted lives up to being an easily digestible comedy film, even if its target audience isn't as easily identifiable as that of the breakfast treats it's based upon. Kids won't get the jokes adults will, and the little ones might find the film forgettable, but it's an entertaining way to spend an hour and a half for a light chuckle care of tried-and-true comedy greats.

Positive Messages

Like in the game, the movie takes place in a world where people have few scruples and angle after ill-gotten gains (in this case, a missing treasure). Never considers what the Spanish treasure ship and the explorers who crewed it did to the land and people they plundered, nor whether finding and keeping the gold is worth the toll it ultimately takes.

Positive Role Models

Central character Nate is intended to be seen as principled compared to his fellow adventurers, who don't hesitate to double-cross each other. And he is indeed loyal to those he considers his friends, but he also kills dozens in his pursuit of wealth and never seems to question it. Sully and Chloe are even less principled, betraying each other at almost every turn, as well as killing conveniently anonymous villains.

Diverse Representations

The two top-billed stars are White men. Within the central quintet of tough, brave characters, two are young women of color; everyone else is male. An antagonist is a man of unspecified Latino heritage who frequently speaks Spanish. Female characters are sexualized with bare, clingy costumes.

Violence & Scariness

Frequent action violence, with many set pieces in which the main characters must fight their way into or out of situations. Characters are often in mortal danger -- e.g., a scene in which they're trapped in an underground chamber filling with water. Two people are accidentally ejected from an aircraft and fall through the air while taking out villains. Deaths take place on-screen, including scenes in which throats are slit, characters are stabbed, and people fall off of planes and helicopters; blood is infrequent, and only one dead body is visible at length. Guns are used/brandished. Most of the opposition that main characters face is of the anonymous-henchperson type, with assailants seen quickly and dehumanized by shots that hide their faces.

Sex, Romance & Nudity

Flirting. A male character looks suggestively at a woman's body as she walks away; he's warned off by another character. References to characters being "together," and a scene in which characters are seen asleep in bed with the implication that they slept together. Female characters, particularly one antagonist, wear costumes that are impractically tight and bare; male characters are frequently seen shirtless.

Language and cursing includes "s--t," "son of a bitch," "hell," "bastards," "ass," "crap," "oh my God," and "Jesus" (as an exclamation). Characters frequently say something "sucks."

Did you know you can flag iffy content? Adjust limits for Language in your kid's entertainment guide.

Products & Purchases

Characters are pursuing a trove of gold from a lost Spanish sailing foray; it's said to be worth billions.

Drinking, Drugs & Smoking

Several scenes take place at bars, with characters ordering cocktails by name (martini, negroni) and a bartender showily twirling bottles. In another scene, characters bond by drinking wine; by night's end, all look bleary and exhausted, and the room is littered with perhaps 10 bottles (for three people). A character holds, but does not smoke, a cigarette.

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that Uncharted is a treasure hunt action-adventure movie that's based on the popular video game series featuring hero Nathan Drake ( Tom Holland ). Expect lots of largely bloodless action violence, much of it in the form of set pieces in which the main characters have to fight faceless, dehumanized minions to get into or out of a location. Characters are frequently in mortal danger, including dangling from a flying plane and being trapped in an underground cavern that's filling with water. Guns are used, and people are killed by being hurled off of vehicles and falling great distances; one has his throat slit, and viewers see some blood and his dead body. Sexual content is limited to flirting, suggestive looks, and a scene that shows people in bed, implying that they slept together. While two of the main characters are women who are depicted as just as strong and brave as the men, they also wear clingy and sometimes unrealistically bare costumes that would be difficult to fight in, including spiked heels. Language includes "s--t," "son of a bitch," "hell," "oh my God," and more. Characters drink frequently; in one scene, three people share at least 10 bottles of wine and appear bleary and sloppy afterward. One character holds a cigarette and tries to light it but doesn't succeed. Drake is depicted as more heroic than the other characters because he doesn't betray his fellow adventurers, yet, like them, he pursues the lost Spanish gold at seemingly any cost, without concern for death and injury. More curse words than I thought

What's the story.

Based on the popular action-adventure video game series that started with Uncharted: Drake's Fortune , UNCHARTED focuses on the game's main protagonist: treasure hunter Nathan Drake ( Tom Holland ). Claiming that he and his long-lost brother, Sam (played as a teen by Rudy Pankow), are descended from renowned explorer Sir Francis Drake, Nathan is recruited by seasoned treasure hunter Victor "Sully" Sullivan ( Mark Wahlberg ) to search for the lost riches of Ferdinand Magellan, with the grudging accompaniment of their associate Chloe ( Sophia Ali ). But they aren't the only team on the hunt: Nathan and Sully's globe-trotting forays are closely followed by the ruthless and well-funded Moncada ( Antonio Banderas ) and his hired gun, Braddock (Tati Gabrielle).

Is It Any Good?

Beautiful to look at and crammed with heart-stopping adventure sequences set in picturesque foreign lands, this video game adaptation is thrilling, if overly long and morally iffy. What Uncharted mainly has going for it is adept adventure set piece directing and star Holland, who's an affable, even charming, lead. Nate is relatably anxious in the midst of mortal danger yet both game and good-humored, a fantastic foil for Wahlberg's Sully, who leans toward blank-faced derring-do. Holland's easygoing vibe makes viewers want to root for Nate on his quest in beautiful places and through immeasurable danger.

But that quest is more enjoyable if you switch off your brain before watching. It can't be denied that the only difference between Nate and Sully and the better-funded Moncada team that opposes them is that we're told the Moncada family is involved in criminal enterprises. Real bad stuff, the film tells us in a few throwaway lines, and then, poof!, Sully and Nate are seemingly cleared to kill as many people as they want in horrible ways in pursuit of treasure. That doesn't sound like a particularly heroic quest, but the film treats it as such (none of the characters questions whether this is a worthy goal, even when lives lost in the hunt mount into the dozens), which certainly detracts from the messages viewers might otherwise take away. Fans of the video games may not care: Scenes in which Nate and Sully leap through midair from planes and helicopters and ancient Spanish galleons are certainly exciting, and the Holland-and-Wahlberg buddy team is pleasant enough to anchor the movie if you don't think too hard about it.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

Families can talk about whether you need to have played any of the Uncharted games to appreciate this movie. Does knowing the game(s) help sharpen your enjoyment, or is the comparison distracting? Do video games typically make good fodder for movie adaptations? Why, or why not?

Many games have lots of deadly violence, with enemies killed in great numbers as the main character pursues their goal. How does the impact of that compare to what you see here?

How does Uncharted dehumanize the characters who die so that viewers don't consider their deaths important and it doesn't detract from the movie's flow? Is that OK?

How do you think viewers are meant to feel about Sully and Nate? About Chloe? Braddock? How do movies tell you who to root for and who to dislike? Consider that villains and heroes in this movie use the same ends to attain their means -- i.e., physical violence and trickery. With that in mind, what makes the heroes different from the villains?
