Abbara Movie Review: Prajwal Devaraj is the saving grace of this masala flick
Rating: ( 2.5 / 5).
The basic theme of Prajwal Devaraj-starrer Abbara is that ‘The good should be good, the bad should be bad.’ The revenge drama traces the story of a young man who has been waiting for 25 years to defeat a villain. He dons three different avatars in this out-and-out masala entertainer by director Ram Narayan, and the film takes us back and forth between the 90s and the present period. In the past, we see Vairamudi (Ravishankar) a land mafia, who kills two people.
Director: Ram Narayan
Cast: Prajwal Devaraj, Nimika Ratnakar, Rajshri Ponnappa, Lekha Chandra, and Ravi Shankar
Coming to the present, Vairamudi is attacked by a masked man (Prajwal Devraj), who is all out to take revenge. One of his roles is the specially-abled Prasad, who is in love with Vaishali (Rajshri Ponnappa). Then, he is Jai for Doctor Priya (Lekha Chandra), and then, he is Shankar, who falls in love with Sonu (Nimika Ratnakar). At one point, the three women realise that they are in love with the same person, Shiva. What’s the motive behind Shiva getting into three different avatars? Why did he fall in love with three different women? Why is he chasing Vairamudi?
Ramnarayan has gone back to the good old days of presenting a masala flick but doesn’t focus on the film’s story and screenplay. The film does make us curious in the initial few scenes, with twists coming at regular intervals, but they don’t really evoke interest.
The story of Abbara is about the tricks the hero plays only to destroy the influential Vairamudi, and this gives ample scope for Prajwal to deliver a massy performance. KGF -fame Ravi Basrur has done a good job with the music.
Unfortunately, in some places, even the serious scenes turn out to be comical. There is every possibility to cut the runtime of the film because a lot of portions meander for too long.
Prajwal Devaraj is the saving grace of Abbara , and so is Ravi Shankar. Despite being a villain, he also gets to shine in comedy and sentiment scenes. While Kote Prabhakar and Arasu Maharaj shine as comedy villains, Shobharaj, Shankar Ashwath, Victory Vasu and Salman have handled their roles smartly. Vijay Chendoor and Govinde Gowda try hard to keep us in splits, but their respective roles don’t add any value to the film.
Overall, Abbara is definitely a watchable film for those who have been missing age-old masala flicks.

Prajwal Devaraj Abbara Film Review:

Let’s start with a moment of silence to express sympathies to all those who watched almost two-and-a-half hours of pure excruciating pain called Abbara on the big screen.
I’m one among them, who survived the onslaught, to share the experience, explaining how it can be effecti
vely used as torture material.
Wondering what makes it such a bad film? Everything in it — barring the acting skills of Prajwal Devaraj and Ravi Shankar, without whom Abbara does not even qualify in taking up the challenge of watching it in the first place.
Coming to the wondrous tale: Prajwal Devaraj plays the protagonist who is up against Vairamudi, the antagonist portrayed by the versatile Ravi Shankar.
The actual story dates back to 25 years ago when Vairamudi with his gang, including Shobhraj as a dreaded gangster, are on a killing spree over a prime piece of land.
The tale keeps returning to the 25-year-old saga of Vairamudi when he kills his loyal associate, and in the hands of his daughter is the first base of this indigestible entertainment.
A still from K Ram Narayan’s ‘Abbara’ movie. (Supplied)
The second base is that of a masked man who returns to avenge the killing of his father after 25 years!
He comes in three avatars: a differently-abled individual, a decent person. and then a tapori guy with different accents.
If that’s not enough, he has three lovers who are the daughters of a lawyer, a doctor, and a police commissioner.
Mindless scenes and plot
The story and the scriptwriter of Abbara deserve an Oscar award of a different kind — a Razzie, maybe? — for coming up with such an amazing tale that is nothing short of wild imagination.
To give examples of how mind-numbing the script is, here are two instances.
The first is that of a doctor who is scared of blood or anything that is red, and she wears yellow-tinted shades to perform her duty. They call it blood phobia. Not, it’s not haemophobia or erythrophobia, which is fear of the colour red, but in Abbara it’s specifically termed “blood phobia”.
Another grand scene is of Vairamudi, who is arrested several times in a single day by different jurisdictional police. The wonder is that his lawyer keeps getting him bail orders for his release on the same day.
There are unlimited such amazing mindless scenes, which words fail to do justice to.
Abbara is made exclusively for a special kind of daredevils. Do share your experiences with us if you are up for the Abbara challenge.

Dreaded gangster Vairamudi is attacked by a masked crusader and, as it turns out, the incident has to do with something that occurred 25 years ago. The masked vigilante (Prajwal Devaraj) has not one but three additional shades and looks through which he tries to bamboozle Vairamudi and seek revenge. Can his master ploy succeed against the mighty villain? Or will have fall prey to his own antics?
The 'Reduce-Reuse-Recycle' principle is a valid fit for cinema as well but in the case of certain films, the fourth R of 'Regret' needs to be addended. Prajwal Devaraj's latest outing as a lead actor, Abbara , is one such classic instance of audience members walking out of theatres feeling nothing but regret and baffled at what they just saw. As a relentless assault on the human senses and the concept of 'value for money', Abbara is a kind of film that threatens to derail Kannada Cinema in its current progress and cause serious harm to the standards that some of the more recent films have set.
The word Abbara can be translated from Kannada as a "loud, deep, rumbling sound akin to that of a lion's roar or a large crowd's commotion" Director K. Ramnarayan's film, on the other hand, is screechingly loud and infuriatingly shallow that you can't help but wonder why you took the bait of watching the film in a theatre. Now imagine the plight of someone who has to write a review on top of that.
As far as plots go, Abbara certainly features one but it is apparent that the writers have no clue why it plays out the way it does. A masked man named 'Strong Man' (that's his name, indeed) attacks a noted gangster/future minister Vairamudi and causes a lot of damage to both his reputation and ego. In the same vein, we see that Strong Man has three additional avatars to himself and each one is starkly contrasting with the other - there's the innocent & physically challenged Prasad, the charming artist & painter Jai, and the very easy-going, almost-tapori kind Shankar.
Why go to such manic lengths of creating not one but four different versions of himself, you may ask. Although the makers suggest that since the real reason to attack the villain Vairamudi is to trace his memory back to a ghastly event that took place 25 years ago, in actuality, the plot device makes no sense whatsoever. And to further extend the runtime of the film, the writers also bring in a love interest for each of these avatars.
The narrative is a clumsy one right from the start and never shows any signs of promise in its length of 2 hours and 28 minutes. Prajwal Devaraj, who is certainly deserving and capable of much better ventures, struggles as the lead actor and although he does seem sincere in wanting to do his best, the film's outrageous tone allows him very, very little space. P. Ravi Shankar as the baddie Vairamudi dishes out his most staple and usual performance and one can see that he can almost literally sleep-walk through such roles. To watch him play a character in the same, beaten-to-death manner is exasperating and it begs the question of whether he has anything to offer as an actor apart from his booming voice and tall physical presence. The three actresses, Rajshri Ponnappa, Lekha Chandra, and Nimika Ratnakar have very little bearing on the story and nor do they seem to pack any charm in their stunted appearances.
The audience members are likely to be shocked at learning that Ravi Basrur of Uggramm and KGF 2 has composed the score of Abbara, for it is underwhelming beyond reason. Basrur's work in the film is off-pitch at times and doesn't carry an iota of the quality that some of his other work does.
Abbara can undoubtedly be given a miss at cinema halls, even if you are the most ardent fan of Prajwal Devaraj. It reeks of a lack of both care and effort and is a colossal mess of a film: simply put, it is an excruciating experience at the movies. As someone who walked out of the theatre in a daze of shock, I can promise you that avoiding the film will save a whole lot of your precious time and money. Thank me later.
