Summarizing worksheets & activities.

Summarizing is one of those skills that may seem very easy to a teacher but can be difficult for students who have not been properly taught how to summarize. For many years I did not even teach my seventh and eighth grade students how to summarize. I would just ask them to summarize texts and then get mad at them when they failed to produce quality summaries. I was wrong in doing this. Now I always teach my students how to write summaries.

Additionally, as per the Common Core State Standards, summaries should not contain opinions, background knowledge, or personal information; rather, a summary should be entirely text based. After years of learning to make connections between the text and themselves, students must be retrained to keep themselves out of their writing in regards to summaries. Teaching this skill surely warrants some of your class time.

Here are some resources that I used in my classroom to teach my students how to summarize. I hope that you find this page useful:

Thank you very much

I want to express my gratitude for the work you have put into this site.

I have used your site for students for almost a decade now and they have not disappointed once.

Thank you for coming back!

I really appreciate these worksheets and all the worksheets you have published. I work as a volunteer for a literacy group, and we don’t have many resources at this level. I was an SLP so I have had no professional experience as a language arts teacher. These resources allow me to teach better and not have to create items from scratch.

thank you it was informative.

Thanks it was extremely helpful.

Absolutely fabulous. I’m using them for two employees who are struggling to summarise information. Very, very helpful – thank you.

Hello, can these great worksheets be linked to Google Classroom? Also, how can I have my students access the online assessments? Thank you.

There is a Google Classroom button on the title slide of each online assignment. Press this button to assign it. Google Classroom integration is pretty thin right now, but I’m hoping that they open up their platform more sometime soon!

Thank you, Mr. Morton, for sharing your tips and worksheets for summary teaching and writing practices. Very useful!

Some great activities, really helpful. One thing I want to point out is that shinobi-no-mono is NOT Chinese – this is Japanese. And in the text the characters given are Japanese, NOT Chinese. This is quite a big oversight. As language teachers we need to be aware of different languages.

Thank you. I appreciate the insight.

I want summary and practice sheets for grade 6

Please send me an answer key for the summarizing test.

Acutually 忍の者 isnt chinese the word の is japanses, while in chinese and japanese they call ninja , 忍者. Other than that this is some really good stuff to study my summary from

great material. I´ve been looking for this type of easy to read/ understand material for a long time.

Would it be possible to have the solutions to the test?

Thanks in advance.

DO YOU HAVE THE ANSWER KEY TO THE SUMMARIZING TEST?

Mrs. Robinson

Hello, I’m looking for the answer guide for the Summarizing test, please advise if it is available?

Loan Nguyen

Thanks for your sharing. Invaluable resources for teachers. It would be highly appreciated if you can send me the key for the summary test.

Is there an answer sheet for the summarizing test?

EXCELLENT worksheets!

Like many of the above comments, I was hoping that there was an answer key for the summarizing test.

I’m pleased that today is the day that I can finally say, “ Here you go .”

Thank you so much!!

Thank you very much. Bless you!

Thank you, Mr. Morton, for sharing these materials. Indeed this is of great help in my class.

The materials are awesome!! I’d like to separate them to two levels of my students. I’m teaching international students, the comparasion of the good and bad summary really works a lot. I really appriciate for your sharing. However, could you share the summarising answer keys as well? That would help me a lot. Thank you!

Would you consider making something for the 4th & 5th grade level? The examples were all very helpful, but many of my students read below grade level. Thank you again! Jill C.

Thanks from Toronto! Great help for ESL classes here.

Thanks so much from Istanbul! Kids loved it and saved me so much precious precious time

Thank you for your valuable help!

Thank you for putting all the material together.

I couldn’t find the answers for the Summarizing Test. They will surely save me some time. Please send them to me, or let me know where I can find them. Thank you so much,

Did you get the answer sheet?

Thank you for all the great materials to use, they will prove to be a great resource!

I was wondering if you would mind pointing out the source from which you pulled the information about ninjas for your worksheet on them. I just wanted to make sure I had the right information because from the bit of research that I pulled up, I see that both in history (concept / existence) and etymology, ninjas are Japanese. The Japanese use kanji, which are essentially Chinese characters, and is only one of the three different “alphabet” sets they use for written communication. So words like “shinobi” and “shinobi no mono” are all Japanese in origin, but written using Chinese characters and not really associated with Chinese culture. This is especially true because “no mono” is a Japanese phrase. Please let me know if there is a source that does say otherwise, so that I can have all the information. Thank you again!

Hello. I pulled that content from a Wikipedia page a long time ago. I’m no expert on the subject. I was just writing a worksheet that I hope would interest students.

These worksheets are helpful but the commenter above is correct, none of these words are or have ever been Chinese. “Shinobi” was in Japanese poems in the 8th century, not Chinese. Shinobi was the Chinese reading of the characters, but it was always a Japanese word. It might be helpful to fix this worksheet to avoid presenting incorrect information to students.

What is the answer key for summary test please?

Thanks a million for this Mr. Morton. This lesson will help me and my students understand summarizing better. God bless your sir!

Thank you so much for helpful material

Brian Samson

What a phenomenal effort you’ve done in putting together all these. Appreciate your ideas. Fabulous!

How amazing to come across your Summarising resouces with explicit instructions. Your comments about teaching the students how to effectively summarise was the most important fact. This in turn forced me to reflect on my own teaching. Thank you for the step by step instructions, they were very valuable. Have you posted any other reading strategy hints?

Sure, I’ve posted them all around this site. Feel free to explore a bit.

Is there an answer key for the Test?

Kristen Moore

What an incredible site! Thank you for sharing your resources and ideas. Especially the Summary power point. I’ve been struggling to get my students to differentiate between a summary and a list of details. This will help so much!

Amy Gartland

I just discovered this site today. I teach high school ELL and was looking for good nonfiction texts that were accessible for my students. I will definitely be looking around some more and plan on using material in my lessons this week!

This was VERY helpful. Even for a university student who needed a refresher!

An answer key for the Summary would be helpful if provided. And also a whole passage summary, not just the summary for each paragraph.

The Little Girl Summary Class 9 English

Summary of the little girl.

The Little Girl Summary – As the title suggests, the little girl refers to the main characters of the story who goes by the name Kezia. Moreover, the main theme of the story is the relationship between parents and their children. Also, the writer Katherine Mansfield wishes to tell us that children share a very deep bond of love with their parents. Even though young children do not feel that their parents love and care for them because they are strict, and to them, many of their parents’ action appears unfair. Besides, when children grow up they realize that all the acts of their parents were favourable for them. In addition, all along the parents were afraid for them and below their strictness lies a heart full of love for them. Most importantly, this bond of love between parents and their children has been underlined through the little girl summary.

The Little Girl Summary in English

In the story, there was a little girl named Kezia. She lives with her father, her mother, and her grandmother. Also, she was afraid of his father and tries to avoid him all the time. Moreover, she feels comforted on seeing his father leaving for office.

She was so afraid of her father that she mumbles in front of him as he appeared to her as rude, critical, and harsh. Further, her grandmother sought her to understand her parents better that’s why she would encourage her to go to the drawing-room to chat with her parents. Then again she finds them cold towards her.

So, one fine day her grandmother suggested Kezia prepare a pin cushion for her father’s birthday.

Consequently, Kezia stitches the three sides of the pincushion casing. But after that, she needs to stuff the cushion with something. That’s why she goes to her mother’s room 6 number the bed table, there she finds many sheets of fine paper.

Then she torn the paper into small pieces and filled the pincushion and sew up the forth side. However, she doesn’t that those papers contain her father’s very important speech for the Port Authority. Although she accepted her mistake and tries to explain the reason why she does it.

But her father was too angry to listen to her reason and punished her with a ruler on her palm. However, she failed to understand why she met out to punishment even after she accepted her mistake. Terribly she said, “What did God make father for?”

Most importantly, one evening she saw Mr. McDonalds, playing with her 5 children, laughing and enjoying with them. This event influenced Kezia that all fathers are not similar. She concluded, that some father is caring and loving like Mr. McDonald and some are harsh like her father.

However, her attitude towards her father changed. Someday, her mother needs to be hospitalized and her grandmother goes with her. So, Kezia was alone in the house with the cook. The day went fine but the night was a different issue. In the middle of the night, she woke up of fear screaming and weeping as she had a terrible nightmare. When Kezia opened her eyes she saw her father right next to her. Her father carried her to his bedroom and made her comfortable and warm on his bed. Further, her father told her to rub her feet with his legs and set them warm. She spends the night with him feeling comfortable and safe.

After that, she realized that her father was not a bad person. And he loves and cares for her in his own way. Moreover, he had to work a whole day to provide for his family and was too weary by evening to play with her.

CBSE Class 9 English The Beggar Summary

The Beggar was written by Anton Chekhov and is the story of a poor alcoholic beggar named Lushkoff who used to beg on roads as he was unable to find work. He resorted to begging in order to survive. One day, he met Sergie, a wealthy advocate and asked him for some work. He was wearing a ragged, tanned and tattered overcoat and had dull drunken eyes with a red spot on either cheek. He claimed that he had been a school teacher in a village earlier and lost his job due to a conspiracy against him. So, he started begging to feed himself and survive.

Sergei immediately recalled that he had seen the beggar on another street the other day. At that time, he had said that he was a student who had been expelled. The lawyer was filled with disgust and threatened to hand over the beggar to the police for cheating people by telling lies. Hearing this, Lushkoff broke down and admitted that he was lying to people so that they would take pity on him for his condition. He confessed that he used to sing in a Russian choir and was fired for his drinking habit. Hence, he requested Sergie to give him some work so that he could make a living for himself.

Sergei asked him if he could chop wood for him at his house. Lushkoff instantly agreed, and Sergie hastened and called out his cook, Olga, to take the poor man into the woodshed and let him chop wood. Olga did so as she looked at Lushkoff with contempt. Although he had become very weak due to his drunkenness, he tried chopping wood as instructed. When Sergie looked at him, he felt sorry and ashamed of himself for making the sick man do menial labour in such cold weather. An hour later, Olga informed Sergei that the wood had all been chopped. Sergei ordered her to give Lushkoff half a rouble for his work. Eventually, he would come once a month to do the work and leave after receiving his wage.

Soon, Sergei moved to a new house and employed Lushkoff, who was now a sober and courteous fellow, to pack and haul furniture. Although he used to shiver in the cold, he did his work properly. Seeing his dedication, Sergei offered him cleaner employment and asked if he could write. Lushkoff replied in the affirmative, and Sergei gave a letter to be sent to a friend, where he would need to do some copy work. Lushkoff did so, but he never returned to Sergei’s place.

Two years passed, and one evening, Sergei saw Lushkoff at the ticket counter of a theatre paying for his seat. He was well-groomed and looked sophisticated. Sergei was astonished seeing his transformation and asked about him. Lushkoff replied that he was working as a notary and was paid thirty-five roubles every month. Sergei was happy that he could help Lushkoff become a responsible human being and felt good for showing him the right path.

Lushkoff thanked Sergei for his kindness and for helping him when he was a mere beggar. Besides, he mentioned that he was more grateful to Olga for her compassionate nature. He revealed that she was the one who used to chop the wood that was assigned to him. Being a kind-hearted lady, she would give away the money to him for the wood-chopping task done by her.

Although she would often chide him, she would also weep at his poor condition. She had advised him to give up his alcoholism and was responsible for helping him to mend his ways. Owing to her kind words and noble deeds, Lushkoff had a change of heart. He stopped drinking completely and started working hard to earn his livelihood. She set the right example before him, and he said that he would always remain indebted to her for her kindness and cooperation.

Summary of the Class 9 English lesson ‘The Fun They Had’ is given here. ‘The Fun They Had’ is story of future schools with virtual classes and robots as teachers. Tommy and Margie are the kids of a family. One day, they come across an old book that reveals to them the old school system that required physical presence of students. They start imagining the fun students would be having when physically present in the school together.

SUMMARY – The Fun They had

Diary entry by margie.

The present story is set in the future when children don’t have traditional books and schools. Margie, a little girl in the story, makes a diary entry – ‘Tommy found a real book’. The entry reveals the date, 21st May 2157, showing that the story is set much into the future.  The book was a very old one, just like the one that her grandfather had in his time as a student. Its pages were yellow and she found it funny to read the words that were not moving like that on a computer screen.

Feelings about the Book

When Tommy had the book in his hand, he called it a waste because after one time reading, it could be thrown away. The same feeling was with Margie too. Tommy found that book in the attic of his house and that book was about a school. Margie hated her school and her mechanical teacher a lot. Her teacher was not a living being. He was an image that flashes on her screen in her study room. He gave her test after test in geography and she was not doing well. Her failure in geography had invited an inspector who tried to trace out the problem. So, her mother had asked the County Inspector to come and find what was wrong.

The Arrival of the County Inspector

The County Inspector was a round little man with a red face. Margie had thought that he would take her mechanical teacher away completely, but it was not so. The Inspector set the teacher right within an hour or so. He told her mother that nothing was wrong with the girl rather the screen was too fast for the girl and therefore Margie was having troubles. Now, it had been slowed down so that, she would be okay with its level.

The Old Kind of School

On reading that book, Tommy had a discussion about the school with Margie. The old kind of schools were a building common to all and with human teachers who would teach all the boys and girls the same thing if they were of the same age.

He gave them tests as well as homework. Margie wanted to know more about those kinds of funny schools, but it was time for her to go to her school. It was time for Tommy too for his school and both of them decided to read the book later.

Margie’s Schoolroom

Margie’s schoolroom was next to her bedroom, where the mechanical teacher was on and waiting for Margie. Her school was open every day except Saturday and Sunday. Margie’s mother believed that girls learn better if they do it regularly. The mechanical teacher (the screen lit up and started) was going to teach a lesson on arithmetic. It was about the addition of proper fractions. Margie had no interest in it. Margie had to put yesterday’s homework in the proper slot too. The mechanical teacher never forgot to ask for the homework.

Margie Feels Nostalgic

Margie was sitting in front of her mechanical teacher, but she was thinking of the good old days when the kids had a common time and place to study. She was also thinking of the human teacher that used to teach them. She was thinking of the fun they had at the school.

Story in a Nutshell

The story The Fun They Had is set in the future when two kids, Margery and Tommy found a book that had stills words instead of moving ones.

Still Words!

“Tommy found a real book!” wrote Margery in her diary on 17 May 2157. Margery’s grandfather told her that his grandfather gifted him that book when he was a little boy. The pages of the book were yellow and crinkly. Both Margery and Tommy felt surprised to see still words instead of the moving ones.

Tommy was thirteen, and Margery was eleven. Tommy told Margery that he had found the book in the attic and it was about school. Margery told Tommy that she hated school. She failed again and again in her school. Margery’s teacher was a little red-faced man (a robot). He had a big screen where all the lessons were shown.

What Margery hated about him the most was the slot where she had to put her homework. The mechanical teacher calculated the marks in no time. The Inspector that her mother summoned after she failed repeatedly told her mother that it was not Margery’s fault. Margery was sad as she had expected the Inspector to take away the teacher altogether.

Man is Dumb

Margery and Tommy were thinking about the old school. Margery could not believe that, centuries ago, they had schools with school teachers. Tommy told her that the teacher was indeed a man, and she did not believe a word of Tommy.

Man, according to Margery, was not smart enough to be a teacher. Margery believed that every teacher must serve the mind of every kid in the school. They both were arguing when Margery’s mom called her for school.

It was time for Tommy’s school too. Margery asked Tommy if she could read about those funny schools, too, and he replied affirmatively. Margery went to her bedroom to attend school.

The mechanical teacher asked Margery to put her homework in the slot. Margery sadly put the homework and imagined old schools where all the kids must have attended the classes together. They helped each other in solving homework, and it would have been a beautiful place.
