Paul DeJong is packing his bags again.

Eighteen days after he was traded to the Blue Jays from the Cardinals, DeJong was designated for assignment on Saturday as they activated Bo Bichette, the team announced.

The shortstop was picked up at the trade deadline for minor leaguer Matt Svanson to cover for Bichette, who was suffering from a knee injury, but his arrival in Toronto did not yield great results.

During his time with the Cardinals this season, DeJong had a .233 average and .710 OPS with 13 home runs and 32 RBIs in 81 games.

But in the 13 games with the Blue Jays, he hit a dismal .068 after going 3-for-44 with one RBI and no extra-base hits.

His nine years of experience and .721 career OPS could potentially make other teams interested, especially if they need someone to play up the middle.

Paul DeJong has been designated for assignment on Saturday by the Blue Jays.

DeJong, 30, was drafted by the Cardinals in the fourth round of the 2015 MLB June Amateur Draft.

While with St. Louis, he finished as the runner-up to Cody Bellinger in 2017 for the Rookie of the Year award after he hit his career-high .285 with 25 long balls.

He earned an All-Star nod in 2019 when he hit .233 with a .762 OPS, piling up 30 homers and 78 RBIs.

Over his career, he’s mashed 115 round trippers.

Blue Jays DFA trade-deadline acquisition DeJong

Acquired from the St. Louis Cardinals for minor-league pitcher Matt Svanson on Aug. 1, DeJong struggled to find his footing with the Blue Jays. He went 3-for-44 with no walks, one RBI, and 18 strikeouts in 13 games.

The 30-year-old hit .211/.269/.365 with 13 homers in 94 games with the Cardinals this season prior to the trade.

DeJong has a $12.5-million team option for 2024 that includes a $2-million buyout.

Bichette had been sidelined with a knee injury since July 31.

TORONTO (AP) — The Toronto Blue Jays acquired shortstop Paul DeJong from the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday while expressing cautious optimism about the status of American League batting leader Bo Bichette’s right knee.

The Blue Jays sent 24-year-old pitching prospect Matt Svanson to the Cardinals. St. Louis will pay Toronto $1,475,806, covering half the $2,951,613 remaining in DeJong’s $9 million salary this year. If DeJong’s $12.5 million team option for 2024 is declined, the Cardinals would pay the Blue Jays $1 million to cover half the $2 million buyout.

The trade came one day after Bichette, a two-time All-Star, left a game against the Baltimore Orioles when he injured his right knee running the bases.

General manager Ross Atkins said Bichette’s sore knee “heightened the need” to acquire DeJong.

“He’s an interesting fit for us without the injury,” Atkins said of DeJong. “He’s hit left-handers relatively well. Very good defender that complements our organization and depth.”

Atkins said the Blue Jays didn’t get close to any other big moves before the trade deadline.

“A lot of the teams that speculated on potentially moving players didn’t,” Atkins said. “Some of the players that were rumored to be coming our way or even available didn’t seem to be as available to us. Most of the deals today that were available to us were smaller in nature.”

Toronto began play Tuesday at 59-48, third in the wild-card race. The Blue Jays were one game behind Houston and five behind Tampa Bay.

Toronto was also third in the AL East, 6 1/2 games behind the division-leading Orioles.

DeJong was an All-Star in 2019 but hasn’t quite replicated that form since. He is hitting .233 with 13 home runs, 32 RBIs and a .710 OPS in 81 games this season. The 29-year-old played his entire seven-year career so far with the Cardinals.

Atkins said Bichette has inflammation in his patellar tendon. An MRI Monday night showed no structural damage.

“Anytime one of your best players has an injury it’s a disappointment, but we’re encouraged by the news after the fact,” Atkins said. “You see someone in pain, there’s obviously concern on many levels. The more you learn, the more at peace we’ve become. But it is a big hit to us, hence the acquisition. Very optimistic that (BIchette) will be helping our team again.”

Bichette currently is day to day, but the Blue Jays have not ruled out a stint on the injured list, manager John Schneider said. Bichette leads the AL with a .321 average and 144 hits. His 42 multi-hit games also are an AL high.

Santiago Espinal, who replaced Bichette on Monday, started at shortstop Tuesday. DeJong is expected to be added to Toronto’s roster Wednesday.

DeJong has played mostly shortstop, but has 21 career appearances at second base. Besides Espinal, the Blue Jays have used Whit Merrifield and Cavan Biggio at second. Merrifield and Biggio both also play the outfield.

DeJong was the third big league player Toronto added before the deadline, all from St. Louis. The Blue Jays picked up left-hander Génesis Cabrera on July 21, then added hard-throwing right-hander Jordan Hicks on Sunday.

“Really excited about the players that we acquired, really excited about the potential impact of Jordan Hicks,” Atkins said. “I know Paul DeJong is going to contribute in a significant way. Génesis Cabrera has done a great job for us already.”

The Blue Jays designated outfielder Jordan Luplow for assignment to make room for DeJong on the 40-man roster.

Toronto activated Hyun Jin Ryu off the 60-day injured list Tuesday as the left-hander made his season debut against Baltimore after Tommy John surgery last June. The Blue Jays also recalled infielder Ernie Clement from Triple-A Buffalo.

Right-hander Bowden Francis was optioned to Triple-A while infielder Otto Lopez was recalled from the Bisons and placed on the 60-day IL because of a strained left oblique. Lopez was placed on the seven-day minor league IL on July 23.

Blue Jays release Paul DeJong, who immediately latches on with new team

By eric treuden | aug 22, 2023.

Aug 4, 2023; Boston, Massachusetts, USA; Toronto Blue Jays shortstop Paul DeJong (10) throws Boston

For Paul DeJong and the Blue Jays, their two-week long relationship could not possibly have gone any worse. In just 13 games, the 30-year-old managed to go just 3-for-44 with one run scored, one run driven in and a whopping 18 strikeouts versus zero walks.

Acquired at the trade deadline as a reactionary move to Bo Bichette going on the injured list, DeJong has gradually been getting worse and worse at the plate as he ages but remains a fairly solid defender. Before the trade, he had a 93 OPS+ through 81 games with the Cardinals, the highest he'd had since all the way back in 2019. The Blue Jays sent intriguing pitching prospect Matt Svanson back to St. Louis which, sure, isn't a massive, organization-altering loss, but it's clear that no deal would've been better than this one.

Once Bichette made his return from the IL, the obvious move seemed to be either Santiago Espinal or rookie Davis Schneider back down to Triple-A. Instead, the Jays pulled the plug on the DeJong experiment, designating him for assignment after he was on the team for just barely two weeks.

Paul DeJong is on the move, going from the AL East to the NL West

After clearing waivers and hitting the open market, DeJong has reportedly already latched on with a new organization , heading from the AL East to the NL West. Per MLB insider Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the shortstop has signed a big league contract with the San Francisco Giants and will officially join the club on Wednesday, August 23.

Just two days ago, the Giants placed long-time shortstop Brandon Crawford on the injured list and had been planning to run with some sort of combination of Johan Camargo, Casey Schmitt and Thairo Estrada. Now, DeJong will join that group. In the absence of Crawford, he's likely going to become the best defensive shortstop the Giants have, but it's also worth noting that once Crawford comes back, the odds of DeJong becoming jobless are very high.

At 65-60, the Giants have been a solid team in 2023 and are very much still in contention for a playoff spot. Unfortunately, it's highly likely that the club sees much of the same out of DeJong that the Blue Jays did and move on quickly.

SF Giants add former All-Star shortstop to roster, DFA Johan Camargo

  • Author: Marc Delucchi

In this story:

San Francisco Giants

The SF Giants officially added veteran shortstop Paul DeJong to the active roster on Wednesday, designating infielder Johan Camargo for assignment in a corresponding move. The Giants signed DeJong on Tuesday to a big-league deal shortly after he was released by the Toronto Blue Jays. DeJong was a longtime starter with the St. Louis Cardinals and was traded to the Blue Jays at the deadline for a pitching prospect. He has hit .211/.269/.365 with 13 home runs in 94 games this season while receiving excellent grades defensively. While those numbers are far from exceptional, they are far better than incumbent shortstops Brandon Crawford, Casey Schmitt, and Camargo.

DeJong was drafted by the Cardinals in the fourth round of the 2015 MLB Draft out of Illinois State and quickly ascended through the minor league ranks. Less than two years later, he had established himself as St. Louis' starting shortstop and hit .285/.325/.532 with 25 home runs in 108 games. With an impressive start to his big-league career, DeJong finished second in the 2017 National League Rookie of the Year voting.

The native of Orlando, Florida, proved to be a potent offensive threat alongside his defensive acumen from 2017-2019. He hit .251/.318/.467 over that span, highlighted by a 30-home run season in 2019 when he received his lone career All-Star selection.

However, since MLB stopped juicing the ball, DeJong's pop has seemingly evaporated overnight. He has not posted a single season OPS above .674 since 2019 and has managed a meager .201/.277/.355 line. Always an aggressive hitter at the plate who walked at below-average rates, DeJong's inability to get on base only exacerbated his dip in offensive production once his home run power vanished.

Despite his struggles, DeJong has been better than any of the shortstops on the Giants roster this season. He's a massive upgrade over utility infielders like Schmitt and Camargo. But his below-average overall triple slash is better than Crawford's as well. Moreover, Statcast's expected weighted on-base average suggests that he may have suffered from a bit of bad luck this season. While his xwOBA (.292) is still below league average (.315), it is better than his wOBA (.277).

DeJong is in the final year of a six-year, $26 million contract extension, but since he was released by the Blue Jays, San Francisco will only be on the hook for the pro-rated major league minimum salary. He is currently set to become a free agent at the end of the season.

Camargo barely spent any time in the Giants organization and was only signed to a minor-league contract earlier this month . He was 4-for-18 with a walk and four strikeouts during his big-league stint with San Francisco. It's been some time since Camargo was an average or better MLB hitter, but the 29-year-old infielder is a versatile defender capable of playing shortstop, third base, and second base. He will likely clear waivers and could accept an outright assignment to remain in the Giants organization.

The Giants may need more than a minor upgrade on the team's depth chart, but Paul DeJong is an above-average defensive shortstop who has been more productive at the plate than the team's current options. It's rare an opportunity like that arises after the waiver trade deadline. Perhaps he can provide a much-needed spark for the SF Giants as they try to stop falling in the standings.

Source: Giants agree to sign veteran shortstop Paul DeJong

The Giants had to wait a month longer than they hoped, but they finally ended up with veteran shortstop Paul DeJong .

DeJong and the Giants reached an agreement on a deal a few days after he was designated for assignment by the Toronto Blue Jays, a source confirmed to NBC Sports Bay Area. Bob Nightengale of USA Today was the first to report the deal.

The Giants had interest in DeJong before the deadline but the Blue Jays pounced when there was uncertainty about Bo Bichette's knee. They circled back in recent days after DeJong was let go, and the shortstop is expected to join the Giants on Wednesday in Philadelphia.

Farhan Zaidi initially pivoted to Mark Mathias at the deadline and then signed veteran Johan Camargo, who was promptly brought to the big leagues and has struggled at the plate. DeJong figures to either take the Camargo or Casey Schmitt spot as the Giants wait for Brandon Crawford (forearm strain) to come off the IL.

While Camargo is 4-for-17 since coming up from Triple-A, DeJong had much more glaring struggles in his brief time in Toronto. He was 3-for-44 with 18 strikeouts, posting a .136 OPS in 13 appearances.

The Giants are surely hopeful he can get back to his St. Louis form. DeJong had 13 homers and a .710 OPS before the July trade. He broke through with 30 homers in 2019 and was an All-Star, but he has just a .632 OPS in the years since.

DeJong has continued to rate as an above-average shortstop throughout, and this season he ranks in the 94th percentile in Statcast's Outs Above Average. While he has primarily been a shortstop in his career, DeJong does have some big league experience at second base.

Blue Jays' Paul DeJong: Loses 40-man spot

Share video.

DeJong was designated for assignment by the Blue Jays on Saturday.

DeJong was picked up from the Cardinals at the trade deadline to cover for Bo Bichette, who was sidelined with a knee injury. After DeJong slashed a miserable .068/.068/.068 in his 13 games with the Blue Jays, the team decided it wasn't worth keeping him around in a bench role now with Bichette returning from the injured list Saturday. DeJong has more name value than most players who wind up getting designated for assignment, but his .207/.277/.355 slash line over the last four seasons may keep interest muted on the waiver wire.

How the Cardinals already won the Paul DeJong trade and then some

By mark powell | aug 19, 2023.

ST. LOUIS, MO - JULY 17: Paul DeJong #11 of the St. Louis Cardinals throws to first base on a ground out during the second inning against the Miami Marlins at Busch Stadium on July 17, 2023 in St. Louis, Missouri. (Photo by Brandon Sloter/Image Of Sport/Getty Images)

The St. Louis Cardinals traded Paul DeJong to the Toronto Blue Jays at the deadline. Mark that down as a win for John Mozeliak.

The Cardinals traded Paul DeJong to the Blue Jays at the deadline for minor league right-hander Matt Svanson . At the time, that was seen as a relative win for the Cards, as DeJong didn’t really have a long-term spot on the roster.

On Saturday, that trade victory was guaranteed, as the Jays designated DeJong for assignment after just a few weeks with the team.

Infielder Paul DeJong has been designated for assignment by the Toronto Blue Jays. — Robert Murray (@ByRobertMurray) August 19, 2023

DeJong was hitting just .068 in 44 at-bats with Toronto. Clearly, he does not deserve at-bats for a team contending for an AL Wild Card spot. In fact, DeJong has struggled to return to form since the 2020 season, when he slashed .250/.322/.349. The former NL All-Star simply hasn’t lived up to expectations since making the NL All-Star team in 2019 with St. Louis.

Who won the Cardinals-Blue Jays Paul DeJong trade?

At the time of the trade, FanSided’s Miranda Remaklus graded the deal a B+ for the Cardinals, in part because they were able to add to their organizational pitching depth, which had previously been lacking.

"“Things appeared to go downhill for DeJong during the Covid-19 shortened 2020 season. He struggled at the plate, and as his frustrations grew, so did his struggles. In 26 games this season, Svanson has a record of 4-1 with an ERA of 1.11 over 31.1 innings. He has 39 strikeouts on the season. Swanson continues the Cardinals’ trend of making deals for young, controllable pitching to bolster the staff for the future.Svanson profiles as an innings-eating strike thrower that the Cardinals will desperately need,” Remaklus wrote at the time."

For what it’s worth, Svanson has struggled in limited appearances for the Cards Double-A affiliate. He has a 10.13 ERA in four appearances for Springfield. Overall, though, Svanson still has a 2.39 ERA across three minor-league destinations in 2023. There is still some potential there, and the Cards will seek it out for the rest of the season.

The deal is already a win for St. Louis given DeJong’s demotion. Any contribution from Svanson would be the cherry on top.

White Sox Outright Zach Remillard

By Anthony Franco | June 6, 2024 at 7:18pm CDT

The White Sox have outrighted infielder  Zach Remillard to Triple-A Charlotte, tweets Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times. He cleared waivers after being designated for assignment on Tuesday.

Remillard has gone unclaimed on outright waivers twice this season. Chicago sent him through waivers in April, reselected his contract a couple weeks later, and again DFA him a month after that. The 30-year-old utilityman has played in 15 MLB games this season. He’s hitting .242/.342/.333 with five walks and 10 strikeouts over 39 plate appearances. Remillard has taken 79 trips to the plate in Charlotte, turning in significantly worse numbers. He owns a .114/.192/.157 slash line in 19 Triple-A contests.

A former 10th-round pick out of Coastal Carolina, Remillard has spent his entire career in the Sox organization. He could elect free agency, but he accepted an outright assignment in April. A rebuilding White Sox team could afford him the best path back to the majors later in the season. Chicago is likely to trade shortstop  Paul DeJong at some point. Neither  Nicky Lopez nor  Lenyn Sosa has provided much offensively at second and third base, respectively.

I’m starting to be really impressed with the White Sox. They are on the right track

' src=

Give them credit. Tonight they discovered 3b Danny Mendick may also be their best reliever, despite having 40mph velocity.

' src=

Next should be White Sox outright Pedro Grifol and the entire coaching staff.

Any manager minus Pedro wouldn’t do better with this disaster.

' src=

That may be true but it doesn’t change the fact that Pedro is a lousy skipper.

' src=

Don’t know what they are waiting for. Pedro should have been fired January 15th.

' src=

What team is trading for Paul Dejong? What contender is looking for a guy whose OBP is like .275? Striking out over 30% and walking like 4% of the time. And this is the dude in hot streak because his slugging carries his ops+…and it’s barely above average because of this years low offensive production so far.

He will crater eventually. Nobody should be buying on dejong.

' src=

So all he’s done is play strong defense and hit for power? Yes, he’s probably going to crater, but I can see why some teams would take a chance on him.

He’s not playing great defense.his fielding runs above average are negative.

He’s actually below average defensively this year. Which is unlike him.

I admit I didn’t look at his defensive numbers for this season since he’s usually had a strong glove. Typically, a couple of months isn’t much to go on, but he’s been plenty bad this year. Maybe he’s getting to the end of the line as a major leaguer.

' src=

Sox trade Luis Roberts I’m done IDK if the Reds or Orioles give up 5 top prospects. I won’t be able to stand watching him put up MVP numbers. The Sox will get a handful of Moncada’s, probably throw in a player to be named later turn out to be like Tatis.

' src=

Girifol has got to go. Look he’s not the main problem, But it should be obvious to even Stevie Wonder that he’s not the solution either. Bring on an interim and start looking now. Get a head start on something for once.

Remember the A’s were 13-50 today last year. At some point they have to start winning eventually. The A’s finished 2023 with 50-112, that will most likely happen with the Wsox this season.

Let fans coach by a lottery. Couldn’t be worse.

Remillard has a lot of strengths in his game, but unfortunately, you can’t fix stupid.

' src=

The GM Chris Getz is responsible for this disaster, but it’s part of Reinsdorf’s master plan. Gut the team of payroll, stock up on MiLB players, ask for a new stadium from a state that you screwed over last time on getting a new stadium. Get denied, cry to MLB to allow the team to move and sell.

' src=

To msqboxer, c/o MLBTR Dear Sir: The White Sox legal team will be contacting you to buy the rights to own your comment The team needs a new Statement of Purpose, and yours fits perfectly.

SF Giants Targeting Paul DeJong for Shortstop Reunion Despite Past Struggles

The SF Giants are contemplating reuniting with veteran shortstop Paul DeJong, who struggled during his brief stint with the team last year.

  • DeJong has posted a .226/.276/.446 line with 10 home runs, 21 RBI, and 23 runs in 192 plate appearances this season.
  • DeJong recorded only nine hits in 50 plate appearances during his time with the Giants last year before being released.

While DeJong's offensive production may not be impressive, he brings a capable defense and could be a low-cost option for the Giants.

  • The Giants are facing a soft spot at the shortstop position, lacking a balance of good offense and defense among their current options.
  • With injuries to key players like Nick Ahmed and Marco Luciano, the Giants have been experimenting with Casey Schmitt and Brett Wisely at shortstop.

DeJong could provide a valuable bat to the Giants' lineup, potentially moving Ahmed to a reserve role and offering experience at shortstop.

The Giants are considering a reunion with DeJong to address their shortstop needs, leveraging his defensive capabilities and potentially boosting their lineup at a minimal cost.

Blue Jays 2023 trade deadline retrospective: Were the deals worth it?

W ith the 2024 MLB trade deadline gradually approaching in a little less than two months away, the Toronto Blue Jays will likely be a major part of the action once again this year. However, one unknown aspect of it will be are they deadline buyers or sellers this time around?

With that tough decision still up in the air, let’s revisit the bold trade deadline moves that the Jays made from 2023 and how they have ultimately impacted the teams and players involved.

Blue Jays trade catcher Sammy Hernandez to the St. Louis Cardinals for pitcher Génesis Cabrera.

In need of some bullpen help, the Jays acquired the once-promising reliever Génesis Cabrera after he was designated for assignment by the Cardinals. In getting Cabrera, the Jays added a second lefty to their relief corps alongside Tim Mayza, along with some boost in firepower to their back end of the bullpen.

Cabrera was solid for the Jays down the stretch in 2023, going 1-0 with a 2.66 ERA, 0.97 WHIP, together with 20 strikeouts in 23.2 innings pitched in 29 appearances. However, this season has been a completely different story as Cabrera has struggled with his command, posting a 2-2 record with an ugly 5.48 ERA and 1.78 WHIP, giving up 14 earned runs, 13 walks and 15 strikeouts in just 23 innings of work.

For Sammy Hernandez, he has flourished since moving to the Cardinals’ organization. This season with their Single-A affiliate Palm Beach, Hernandez has hit a solid .313 with an .816 OPS, along with 11 doubles and 20 RBI in 39 games. He has also improved his plate discipline, reducing his 2.5:1 strikeout-to-walk ratio from last season down to about 1.5:1 this year.

Who is the winner?

The Jays would clearly be the winners as of last season, as Cabrera helped stabilize the bullpen and ultimately played a key role in taking the team to the playoffs. However, with his stark regression this season, along with the improved play of Hernandez (even though it was just Single-A), if Cabrera is unable to rediscover his game, it could slowly tilt towards the Cardinals’ favor in the long run.

Blue Jays trade pitcher Matt Svanson to the Cardinals for shortstop Paul DeJong.

Everyone will certainly remember this trade, but perhaps for all the wrong reasons. At the time, the acquisition of Paul DeJong was necessitated by the injury to star shortstop Bo Bichette just prior to the trade deadline. Given DeJong’s solid track record and veteran leadership, he was expected to be a viable replacement for Bichette until his return from the IL.

However, DeJong was a total disaster in what turned out to be a surprisingly short tenure with the Jays. In 13 games, he went a dreadful 3-for-44 for a .068 batting average with just one RBI and 18 strikeouts. In doing so, it forced the Jays to get Bichette back sooner than expected as they eventually designated DeJong for assignment . The early return from injury by Bichette might have resulted in indirectly affecting his performance down the stretch last season, and perhaps it has lingered into this season as well given his poor performance to date.

As for Matt Svanson, he has done a decent job with the Cardinals’ Double-A affiliate Springfield this season, posting a 3.49 ERA and 1.55 WHIP with 30 strikeouts in 28.1 innings pitched over 22 relief appearances. He could potentially be a useful bullpen piece for the Cardinals down the road. In the case for DeJong, he has moved on to the Chicago White Sox this season and has reverted to some degree to his productive ways, tallying 10 home runs and 21 RBI while sporting a .222 average in 57 games to date.

Who is the winner?

Any time a player only puts up one measly RBI and three hits as his main stats line for his entire tenure with a club, there’s no way that club would come out as a winner in any scenario. As a result, the Jays lost big time in that trade. The winners are both the Cardinals, who may now have a useful piece for their future, and the White Sox, who has DeJong effectively producing in various spots of their batting order this season.

Blue Jays trade pitchers Sem Robberse and Adam Kloffenstein to the Cardinals for pitcher Jordan Hicks.

For their biggest splash at the 2023 trade deadline, the Jays brought in hard-throwing right-handed reliever Jordan Hicks to help solidify the back end of their bullpen. Hicks delivered as expected, as he displayed his mastery over opposing hitters while posting a stellar 2.63 ERA and 1.08 WHIP with 22 strikeouts in 24 innings of work. However, he never really got the opportunity to shine for the Jays in the postseason as they suffered an early exit at the hands of the Minnesota Twins.

Hicks would ultimately leave the organization and head into free agency where he signed on with the San Francisco Giants with the opportunity to become a starter once again. As a starter, Hicks has held his own so far in 2024 with the Giants, amassing a 4-2 record with a stellar 2.82 ERA and 1.19 WHIP in 13 starts.

Currently ranked 12th and 15th respectively in the Cardinals organization top prospects list according to MLB Pipeline, both Sem Robberse and Adam Kloffenstein have developed into key arms in their minor league system. Robberse had put together a solid season so far with the Cardinals’ Triple-A affiliate Memphis Redbirds prior to Thursday’s start, posting a 3.53 ERA and 1.09 WHIP with 65 strikeouts in 66.1 innings pitched. Kloffenstein also has strung together a decent year with Memphis, compiling a 4.50 ERA and 1.12 WHIP in 12 starts.

If the Jays had retained Hicks for the 2024 season, then the trade would probably feel more evened out. However, the departure of Hicks had left a huge hole in the Jays’ bullpen for 2024. Together with the progression of both Robberse and Kloffenstein, who could soon be seeing some big league action, the winners here are obviously the Cardinals, as well as Hicks for getting his wish and being successful as a starter once again.

So overall, one has to agree that the moves that the Jays made at last year’s deadline did have an impact on their playoff run last season with the solid performances of Cabrera and Hicks. However, the overall value of the moves have since become negligible with Cabrera struggling this season and Hicks and DeJong moving on and excelling with other teams. With the prospects that they gave up doing well so far in 2024, in retrospect, the trade deadline by the Jays in 2023 is turning out to be a regrettable failure to say the least.

Chicago Cubs

Ian happ keys late rally, cubs come back twice to top white sox 7-6.

CHICAGO -- — Ian Happ 's second double of the night drove in two runs to put the Chicago Cubs ahead in the eighth inning, and the North Siders came back twice to beat the crosstown White Sox 7-6 at Wrigley Field on Tuesday night.

Happ's third hit of the game, lined to the right-field corner off Jordan Leasure , drove in Cody Bellinger and Christopher Morel to erase a one-run White Sox lead and deal them a 12th straight loss.

The Cubs came out on top in a seesaw finish to win for just the third time in 12 games.

""It was a good ballgame and lots of back and forth," Cubs first-year manager Craig Counsell said of his first Chicago Crosstown Classic experience. "We had some big hits and we needed some big hits.

“It was a fun night, really, scoring late-inning runs like that. Some homers, Ian's double in the eighth obviously.”

Luis Robert Jr . launched a 448-foot solo shot to the left-center bleachers in his return to the lineup to break a tie in the seventh and put the White Sox ahead 6-5. The All-Star center fielder added a single in his first game in nearly two months after being sidelined by a right hip flexor strain.

“Robert gave us the lead right back,” White Sox manager Pedro Grifol said. “And we gave the lead back to them. Hard-fought ballgame.

“This one obviously got away from us. We’ve got to close these things out, we really do.”

Morel and pinch-hitter Patrick Wisdom each hit two-run homers in the sixth to erase the White Sox's four-run lead and tie the game at 5.

"When you’re going through a tough stretch, you've got to grind out every win," Happ said. “It would have been really easy in that situation to kind of fold and not come back."

Light-hitting Lenyn Sosa lined a two-run homer and Korey Lee doubled in two runs in the White Sox's five-run rally in the fourth inning off Cubs starter Shota Imanaga .

Morel hit his team-leading 11th homer. But the third baseman also made an error fielding Paul DeJong’s chopper to set up the White Sox’s rally in the fourth.

Luke Little (2-1) pitched a scoreless eighth for the win. Hector Neris worked around a walk — and picked off pinch runner Duke Ellis after he stole second — in the ninth for his eighth save.

White Sox starter Chris Flexen allowed one run on three hits in five innings, striking out four and walking none before the bullpen faltered. Leasure (0-1), the last of four White Sox relievers, allowed two runs on two hits in the eight.

Imanaga was charged with with five runs — one earned — on seven hits in 4 1/3 innings in his 11th start. The 30-year-old left-hander from Japan struck out six and walked none as his ERA nudged up to 1.88.

Imanaga was relieved by Tyson Miller following a 42-minute rain delay in the top of the fifth.

The White Sox took a 5-0 lead in the fourth. Four of the runs were unearned

With runners on first and second, Morel flubbed an attempt to backhand DeJong’s bouncer down the line. That allowed Andrew Vaughn to race home from second and open the scoring.

Lee lined a double to the left-field corner to make it 3-0. He came home on Sosa’s homer, his first this season and eighth of his career.

Robert, who hit 38 homers and drove in 80 runs in a breakout season in 2023, had been out since April 6.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Cubs: RHP Colten Brewer (low back strain) was scheduled to make rehab appearance at Triple-A-Iowa.

White Sox: The injury-plagued White Sox also placed OF Tommy Pham (left ankle sprain) and OF Dominic Fletcher (left shoulder strain) on the 10-day injured list retroactive to June 3. Chicago recalled outfielder Zach DeLoach from Charlotte and selected the contract of speedy outfielder Ellis from Double-A Birmingham.

The White Sox send RHP Erick Fedde (4-1, 3.12) to the mound against Cubs RHP Jameson Taillon (3-2, 2.84) on Wednesday night.

CHC win 2-0
