A Perception-Based Curricular Review on the K to 12 HUMSS Strand Curriculum

Author: Edwin B. Estrera, University of the Philippines Cebu, Philippines Email: [email protected] Published: November 27, 2020 https://doi.org/10.22492/ije.8.4.02

Citation : Estrera, E. B. (2020). A Perception-Based Curricular Review on the K to 12 HUMSS Strand Curriculum. IAFOR Journal of Education: Studies in Education , 8 (4). https://doi.org/10.22492/ije.8.4.02

This study examines the perception of Humanities and Social Science teachers among public Senior High Schools in the Department of Education’s Humanities and Social Sciences strand in the Philippines. It uses Erden’s element-based model of evaluation by considering the alignment to the goals of the Humanities and Social Sciences disciplines, the purpose, and core courses of the program, and the teaching-learning process. It also uses Tyler’s Rationale as frameworks in assessing the curriculum. Likewise, the study examines the problems and difficulties in curricular implementation. Upon administering a survey to 25 Humanities and Social Science teachers among four public senior high schools, data revealed that the respondents perceived the curriculum goals, and the purpose of the program as highly observed, while the core courses of the program and teaching-learning process were satisfactorily observed in the curriculum. Also, sex and age were not factors in their level of assessment of Humanities and Social Science goals. The problems and difficulties encountered by teachers included unbalanced time allocation of learning competencies, lack of available learning materials, and lack of specialized teachers. Based on the findings, it is suggested that the government provide stronger teacher support programs to address the gap in curriculum implementation. The K to 12 program also needs a full review, as the study only provides a presurvey to more significant institutional issues. While the Humanities and Social Science curriculum appears aligned with the goals of their disciplines, and to the country’s educational goals, its realization still depends upon the teachers’ implementation in the classroom level.

Psychology and Education: A Multidisciplinary Journal

Psychology and Education , Jobert Maninang , eva chandrina torregoza , Joy C. Villamil

One of the academic strands offered by the Philippine Education in the Senior High School department is the Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS) which encapsulates branches of knowledge in science. This is in line with Republic Act stipulated in the Philippines laws numbered 10533. Anchored on Deped Order 51, s 2015, students who intend to study humanities and social sciences in higher education should enroll in the Humanities and social sciences. This study aims to examine the landing station of HUMMS graduates of the Division of Bais City. The lack of empirical studies that especially concentrate on the lived experiences of HUMSS graduates may be one potential research gap in this area. The study is enlightened by the theory of descriptive phenomenology by the philosopher Edmund Husserl. The Husserlian descriptive phenomenology design was used for this qualitative study. The researchers separately performed one-on-one interviews in the study of the lived experience of HUMSS graduates, which helped to get a holistic sense and consciousness relating to the full experiences of the participants. Participants must have completed their studies in the humanities and social sciences (HUMSS) strand at the School Division of Bais City. The study came up with four emergent themes: Theme 1: The All-in-one package, Theme 2: Academic Alignment; Theme 3: First-come-first-serve and Theme 4: Curriculum re-touch. These themes provided a clear result of how the HUMSS graduates lived experiences in landing better opportunities.

Humanities 101 is a program discursively constructed around a belief in the beneficence of an entry-level education in the humanities for low-income and otherwise marginalized learners. It uses education to counter marginalizing social forces, the literature surrounding it often equating a university-level educational experience to power, privilege, and success. " Humanities 101: What I have learned from it... what I am still learning " is an account of the author's observations of one such program, and the conclusions he drew regarding what a legitimate educational experience is about, and the complex social networks and discursive spaces such a program entails. This article tells of my observations of an entry-level university humanities course for adults living on the margins of our society. It stands as an early part of an ethnographic study of two Ontario-based Humanities 101 programs, wherein I sought to explore the culture of the programs as evidenced through the experiences of the students, instructors, and one of the coordinators involved. My interest in studying Humanities 101 stemmed from my work as an assistant with one such program, and the disjuncture I witnessed between the everyday organization of the adult learners' lives and the implementation of the program. On a few occasions

The paper has attempted to understand the status of „Psychology of Health‟ course offered in undergraduate programme within a larger debate between mainstream and critical health psychological (CHP) perspectives. The theoretical perspectives from critical psychology have been borrowed to understand and analyse the content of the course. The experiences gained in the classroom teaching of the course to undergraduate students have been utilised to assess and examine its curriculum. As analysis of the theoretical review of present literature, I have presented my critical views on certain basic foundations of mainstream health psychology (MHP) by challenging certain assumptions of it and have made some more indigenous suggestions for more holistic understanding of the discipline and for making space for critical and interdisciplinary explanations about health.

Effects of Teaching Strategies of Humanities and Social Sciences

  • Jessica Dela Cruz

This research was conducted by the researchers to improve the teaching skills and strategies of Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS) Strand teachers and promote further advancement to the student’s academic performance in helping students who are always behind the class. Enhancing the teaching strategies of the teachers can make a huge impact on the student’s academic performance, which can only result from either improvements or the other way around. Using the sampling technique, the researchers surveyed some HUMSS Strand teachers and students. The researchers used quantitative methods and descriptive designs to analyze and interpret the data. The instrument used was a questionnaire. A total of 100 HUMSS Strand students, which were systematically chosen through random sampling technique, were provided with survey questionnaires. According to this research, 60 students agreed that the teaching technique of teachers, such as demonstration and use of technology, can make students understand the topic. A total of 54% of our respondents agreed with the effectiveness of the demonstration technique. The result now provided evidence to explore more teacher strategies to enhance the activeness of students, especially the students who are victims of societal problems. This leads to a good result, even if the improvement is negligible. Our results have two parts, that is, report and comment; the reporting function always appears in the results section, while the comment discussion can appear in the reporting section. The results of this research showed that the classroom environment is the leading environment to enhance your skill knowledge, especially your attitude and your manners. The student gets bored because of the teaching styles of the teachers. This study focused on how motivated and fun the classroom environment is. If the teachers are good and awesome, then the way he/she teaches motivates the students to learn. The student will succeed and change the stimulated classroom from the boorishness of students to feel protected, contented, and enjoy getting effective teaching strategies.

Top 5 Myths And Misconceptions About HUMSS

The Humanities and Social Sciences strand or HUMSS strand is one of the many interesting areas you can take in Senior High School. It focuses on the study of human behavior and society, culture, literature, politics, and other fascinating topics. But like any other strand in SHS, there are many misguided beliefs, misconceptions, or irrational fears that students might have about HUMSS. If you have heard scary stories about HUMSS strand that can make you want to back out, don’t worry! Not all of these things are true and we’re here to debunk some of these myths:

HUMSS is for people who hate math

“Nag HUMSS ka kase ayaw mo sa math ‘no?” While it is true that there isn't as much math in HUMSS compared to other strands like ABM and STEM, HUMSS subjects are also just as complex and will require hard work from its students. Ika nga, kailangan mo pa rin ng sipag at tiyaga para maging matagumpay sa strand na ito, just like in any other strand!

There is no future in HUMSS

“Wala naman trabaho sa HUMSS.” Ever heard this statement? Did you know that contrary to popular belief, careers in HUMSS can also have a high earning potential? Depending on the field you’re planning to go into, you can earn as high as PHP 400,000 per year with a job as a Technical Writer or PHP 300,000 as a Public Relations Specialist ! Just because wala ka sa engineering or business field doesn't mean the future couldn’t be as bright for HUMSS graduates. HUMSS students have the freedom to take on college courses and professions that are just as important and fulfilling. Lawyers, content strategists, psychometricians, and educators among others can be lucrative jobs too!

You have to be good at public speaking to succeed in HUMSS

Although HUMSS deals with communicating and interacting with people most of the time, it doesn't mean you have to be a master at debate and public speaking! Even HUMSS students encounter stage fright too. But since a lot of activities in HUMSS involve technical and creative writing, as well as reading discussions, you can definitely have the chance to develop important skills in public speaking which can be a very valuable skill in the future.

HUMSS students are only good at writing

"Sulat dito, sulat doon." A lot of activities in HUMSS do include writing essays, term papers, reviews, and other things of this sort. However, this doesn’t mean passing and succeeding HUMSS is an easy feat! We’ve all been required to do research tasks and write academic papers at some point in our lives so we can all agree that writing isn’t as easy as many people thought it is, right?

Having the ability to write creatively and well-written is a skill that not everyone can skillfully execute. It involves other important skills like research skills, language skills, critical thinking, and hard work to make sure your work is factual and accurate.

HUMSS subjects are easier compared to other strands

Every incoming senior high school student will certainly have to make the important decision of choosing a strand. May ibat’t ibang specialization ang bawat SHS strand at bawat isa ay makatutulng sa’yo sa paghahanda para sa kinabukasan mo. While each strand is designed for certain fields, they each have their unique set of advantages and challenges. It's not accurate nor fair to simply call one strand "easier" than the others. The question then is not about which one is easier but which strand will prepare you for the future you want.

Entering the world of HUMSS can seem overwhelming for incoming SHS students, but it takes time and facts to learn more about the strand.. With all these myths busted, we hope you now understand what the field is all about and what it’s not.
