Let's talk about stress. Everyone has experienced stress at some point and knows what it feels like to be overwhelmed. Since stress can impact your mental and physical health, it can be helpful to talk about it and find ways to navigate through difficult situations.
One way to start a conversation about stress is to host a workshop or meeting. The meeting can take place whereever you feel it might benefit the participants: your workplace, your school, or even at home. You can use the presentation below as a starting point. Not only does it address how stress affects the mind and body, but it also covers different types of stress and how to recognize the warning signs. Lastly, it offers coping strategies for anyone to use.

There is a lot of stigma surrounding mental health. This can prevent people from reaching out for help when they need it and expressing their real experiences with stress. When you share this presentation, you give the people around you an opportunity to talk about things they may have been bottling up. Not only can this create a sense of relief, but it allows us to learn from one another and find new skills for stress management.

Not everyone experiences the same kind of stress. There can be a wide variety of factors that cause people to be overwhelmed, whether it's their work environment, their home life, or trying to find a balance between the two.
- How to Teach Stress Management
Think about the challenges that your specific group might be experiencing. Then use this insight to personalize your presentation to fit your group's unique needs.
Some factors you might want to include are:
- Financial stress
- Specific struggles of being a single parent
- Stress when breaking habits or battling addiction, such as quitting smoking
- Work-related stress for specific professionals, such as police officers or medical students
You can also ask your group for recommendations beforehand. Simply ask them what factors in their life are a cause of stress or if there are any specific kinds of stress they're interested in learning about. Then, you can bring this information along with resources to address these needs.
Practice a Technique Together
Make time during the presentation to test out a coping strategy or two. One of the best ways to help people decide which techniques work for them is to give them some hands-on experience. This can take as little as five to ten minutes and can provide people with a reliable tool they know they can turn to whenever things become overwhelming.
Take some time during the presentation to try one of the following skills outlined in the slides:
- Controlled Breathing
- Creating a daily or weekly schedule
- Physical activity
Some activities may require materials, such as journaling or creating a schedule. Be sure to have these on hand if this is your group's chosen activity. In addition, if you choose meditation, you can use a guided meditation script or an audio meditation guide to help you along the way.
Leave Room for Questions and Comments
Another great way for people to learn from the presentation is to give your group time to speak their minds, ask questions, and share their experiences. You can pause between every few slides for questions and comments, or wait to field them all at the end of your talk. This way, the people within your group can act as resources and a support system for one another.
You can also come prepared with questions of your own to encourage participation. Some questions might include:
- How do you all usually respond when you feel stressed?
- How many times a week do you feel overwhelmed?
- What strategies do you currently use when you feel stressed?
- What are some signs that you're feeling overwhelmed?
- What's one thing you would like to improve on when it comes to stress?
If you have a small group then everyone might be able to participate in the conversation at the same time. However, if you have a large group, you might want to consider breaking out into smaller groups or partnering up.
Make it an Ongoing Conversation
People are constantly exposed to stress. One presentation is a great start, but you might want to consider further conversations. Address the topic in future meetings, check in with your group members, and ask how you all can support each other through resources and community building.
If this is your first time leading this type of conversation, just do the best you can and remember to be gentle with yourself. You're addressing a very important issue, and that's something to be proud of. Our overall well-being is important, and you're holding space and providing resources to ensure just that.

Even though time saving gadgets and self help tools have increased substantially in the 20th century and people have more control over their lives, there is an increase of anxiety and people have less free time. “We will define stress as any circumstances that threaten or are perceived to threaten one’s well-being and thereby tax one’s coping abilities”. (Pg 71). For example a person can no longer meet external demands such as work or relationships because they feel they do not have the resources to cope. Chronic stress is in the eye of the beholder. Stress can be a result of both positive and negative experiences, and it is a necessary part of our daily lives. From an evolutionary standpoint stress was necessary for survival (i.e., imagine hunting large prey on which one’s entire tribe is dependent) and some stress continues to be a helpful part of our modern lives since it motivates us to accomplish tasks or make needed changes.We all feel the pressure of our environment during times of transition (i.e., at the time of high school graduation) and in preparation for significant life events (i.e., in anticipation of a job interview). Although response to stress is often adaptive (i.e., feeling stress before an exam may be a critical motivator in studying for it), too much stress or an inability to cope with it can cause negative emotional and physical symptoms, including, but not limited to, anxiety, irritability, and increased heart rate.

Causes of Stress • *Stress is any reaction or response made by the body to a new situation. • Two kinds of stress: • *Eustress is a positive, pleasant, and desirable stress. Example: wining a race. • Distress is negative stress. • Stressor is a situation or an event that causes the body to react.
Causes of Stress • Life changes and daily hassles • *Major life changes such as divorce increase daily hassles, causing stress. • Example is “During the past year, you got married, got a promotion, and moved into a bigger house.” • Daily hassles such as getting stuck in traffic or misplacing your keys cause stress in your life. • Even if stress is due to a pleasant change, daily hassles can occur.
Causes of Stress • Chronic stressors • Inescapable day-to-day situations or conditions that cause stress. • More stressful than daily hassles. • Not as stressful as a major life change. • Examples include poverty, abuse, long-term health problems, and racism.
Sources of Stress • External stressors • Stressors from outside sources that causes pain or discomfort, frustration, or conflict. • Frustration is the feeling people get when their goals are blocked. • *Inner conflict is the pressure felt when forced to make a choice. • The three types of inner conflict are approach-approach, approach-avoid, and avoid-avoid.
Sources of Stress • *Approach-approach conflict – Feeling of conflict one gets when torn between two desirable goals. • Approach-avoid conflict – Occurs when one is drawn towards and away from something at the same time. • *Avoid-avoid conflict – Occurs when one is torn between two undesirable options.
Sources of Stress • Internal stressors • One’s perceptions or interpretations of a stressor as well as personality factors. • Perceptions differ because of: • *Cognitive appraisal: Your “thinking evaluation” of an event or a situation. • *The unnecessary stress of irrational beliefs: An irrational belief system or, at worst, turning an irrational belief into an imagined catastrophe. • The stress of irrational beliefs can be reduced by the “rational emotive therapy.”

Type A and Type B Personality Behavior • Type A and Type B personalities are associated with personality factors. • *Type A personality is characterized by impatience, hostility, perfectionism, and a sense of time urgency. • *Type B is characterized by flexibility, the ability to relax and delegate work, and a minimal sense of time urgency. Most top level executives are likely to be Type B people.
Type A and Type B Personality Behavior • Someone with a different kind of personality than type A or type B: • The survivor personality type manage things well even if the stressors and problems are impossible to overcome. • The hardy or resilient personality see • *1. challenges, have a sense of • 2. commitment, and a feeling of being in • 3. control. (the three C’s)
The Physical Effects of Stress • General Adaptation Syndrome (GAS): • When confronted with stress, the body responds with an activation of the sympathetic nervous system – Fight-or-flight response. • *When the fight-or-flight response is activated, you enter the first stage of GAS – Alarm. • The second stage is adaptation where one adapts to the stressor and can usually return to normal. • *The third stage is exhaustion where one ends up using all the physical resources.
The Physical Effects of Stress • The immune system serves three basic functions: • Recognizing foreign cells and attacking them. • Developing antibodies to recognize foreign invaders in the future. • Sending white blood cells and other helper cells to the location of an injury or infection to speed healing. • Chronic stress can actually weaken your immune system and fall victim to an illness that you would normally fight off with ease.
The Cost of Stress in the Workplace • Job burnout is the physical and emotional exhaustion resulting from long-term stress or frustration in one’s workplace. • It leads to lower productivity, lost days of work, worker’s compensation claims, and lawsuits among others.
The Cost of Stress in the Workplace • Health effects on employees are headaches, back pain, exhaustion, anxiety, anger, insomnia, and digestive upsets. • Other effects include accidents on the job, excessive eating or smoking, anger outbursts, and alcohol/drug abuse. • Employees are seeking help for stress through employee programs.
The Cost of Stress in the Workplace • Causes of employee stress • Stress from management. • Having no say in decisions. • Too much/little structure. • Racism and sexism. • Frustrating company policies. • Low pay. • Stressful relationships with supervisors/peers. • Boredom. • Work overload; too much responsibility. • No promotions.
The Cost of Stress in the Workplace • Stress affects self-esteem. • It makes one overwhelmed. • It makes people less productive and less successful, which lowers self-esteem. • It impacts all areas of people’s lives.
Strategies for Success • Discard irrational beliefs: • Evaluate the consequences of the belief. • Identify your belief system. • Dispute the self-defeating belief. • Practice effective ways of thinking.
