Master's Student: I love being a student at Pitt. As a graduate student, it is definitely busy and overwhelming at times, but I have wonderful, supportive classmates and professors. The best part of this year-long Master's program is definitely the student teaching experience. I have loved building connections with students and learning how to effectively employ teaching strategies. The worst part of my experience has been that the workload at my teaching site often ramps up at the same time as my Pitt classes, which makes that time extra stressful. Overall, though, it has been truly amazing. ... Read 6 reviews

Alum: Alverno's program has allowed me to have a favorable experience in my daily and professional life. It has allowed me to create a balance between my work life and my work duties, which is great for me to be able to fulfill both facets, which are so important in my life. The classes are adequate to challenge the intellectuality of each person, which is why I like it very much since it allows me to challenge myself and strive every day to achieve the objective that will allow me to reach the goal with a lot of dedication. The availability and dedication that the professors have with each material is satisfactory for me and fills me with peace of mind since the teaching they provide is clear and understandable for the students. They are always more than available to continue leading the student on the path of success without overlooking any detail, it is what I like the most about my professors. “I loved my program of study at DePaul. It reflected a value system rooted in community work, and working to serve and empower underserved and vulnerable populations. I would tell future doctoral students to come ready to learn to understand the world and society in a much more nuanced way, to question assumptions, and be ready to engage in a critical reflection of society and oneself.”

Program Overview

The Ph.D. program in Community Research and Action is an interdisciplinary program combining community psychology, urban sociology, human geography, applied anthropology, and human and community development. It trains action-researchers committed to promoting social justice in rigorous theoretical analysis and research methods to prepare them for careers in academia, research, and public policy. The Ph.D. degree includes (a) a core set of courses covering inequality, diversity and social justice, community intervention and change, community inquiry (social research methods), public policy and advocacy, and organizational theory and change; (b) advanced research methodology covering quantitative, qualitative, and critical methods, action research, field research, and program evaluation; and (c) minor concentrations that are designed individually, drawing from Human and Organizational Development Department courses (in community organizing and development, community health, human development and prevention science) and from other departments and specializations within Peabody College (e.g., quantitative methods, urban education) and throughout the university (e.g., anthropology, divinity, gender and sexuality studies, global health, political science, sociology). Planning is done with the major professor and approved by the student’s committee. Students receive practical training and experience in teaching, grant-writing and applied research, and program or policy work in collaboration with nonacademic partners. In addition to the required courses listed below, students must complete a grant or graduate fellowship proposal and appropriate field experience.

All entering doctoral students receive financial support covering tuition, a stipend, and health insurance for up to five years, depending on their degree level (Bachelor's or Master's) when starting doctoral studies.

Program Facts

Director of Graduate Studies: Brian Christens Admissions Coordinator: Tonya Beaird Brown Admission Term: Fall Credit Hours: 72 Application Deadline: December 1

Program Curriculum

The program is 72 credit hours structured into the following sections:

  • Core (15+ semester hrs)
  • Methods (15+ semester hrs)
  • Advanced Content/Minor(s)/Specialization Areas/Electives (30+/- semester hrs)
  • Individual Projects: M.S. thesis, Internship, Dissertation (12+/- semester hrs)

The core curriculum covers the theoretical and empirical bases of community research and action. Required research methods courses include both qualitative and quantitative approaches and emphasize an applied, field research orientation, including program evaluation, policy analysis, needs assessment, quasi-experimental, as well as more phenomenological designs. As ecological theory deserves commensurate methodology, multiple methods (e.g., survey, systematic and participant observation, existing records, social indicators, ethnography, and content analysis) and multiple levels of analysis (e.g., individual, family/group, organization/community, policy jurisdiction) are encouraged.

The program's interdisciplinary aims are reflected in the core curriculum, the required qualitative and quantitative methods courses, and the list of electives and possible minors. Minors are possible in virtually any field related to Community Research and Action, including (but not limited to) quantitative psychology, leadership and organizations, sociology, political science, religion, and economic development.

Basic Requirements

Out of the 72 required credit hours, a minimum of 42 semester hours in formal didactic coursework is required. The remaining credit hours may be met with electives and/or research and field hours. Specifics are determined by students in consultation with their advisor and program of studies committee. In addition, each student must pass all required core and methods courses, write a master's thesis by the fifth semester (or have a previously completed thesis approved), write a fundable-quality grant proposal, complete a fieldwork requirement, write and defend a major area paper (which serves as the qualifying exam for doctoral candidacy) and propose, complete, and defend a doctoral dissertation. The grant proposal will generally be focused on the dissertation topic and may elect to be submitted to one or more funding agencies to support the dissertation research.

Community Psychology advocates for social justice by empowering marginalized communities and seeks to strengthen health and well-being through community partnership and prevention programs. For 50 years, the University of New Haven's Master's Program in Community Psychology has successfully prepared graduates for professional careers in mental health and related human services.

An examination of historical roots and current concepts. A social-problems approach to psychological dysfunction, emphasizing models of social support, prevention, and community, as well as strategies of empowerment and social change.

This course examines the pervasive effects of social stratification as they are enacted in public organizations such as schools, community centers, and human service agencies. Students will explore how their race, ethnicity, social class, gender, and sexual orientation, for example, impact the people with whom they work. The course will also investigate the theoretical underpinnings of systematic social dominance and how students might counter this dominance in their workplaces and outside them.

This course examines various mental health treatment modalities, with particular emphasis on treatment for patients/inmates in the forensic system. Treatment of insanity acquittees, incompetent-to-stand-trial patients, inmates, juvenile offenders, psychopaths, and sex offenders will be examined.

A systematic study of the processes involved in planning, implementation, and impact of organizational programs. The focus is on action research strategies that integrate the entire evaluation process.

Community Psychology Graduate Degrees

Community psychology is a specialization linking social-impact service with clinical psychological inquiry. Graduates of community psychology programs often devote their careers to advancing theory, research, and collaborative action to promote positive well-being, increase empowerment, and advance social justice.

What are the course requirements for community psychology graduate programs?

Degree programs in community psychology can range from four to six years. This is because most of them offer non-terminal master’s degrees—meaning you’ll be applying for a PhD in community psychology or a related field (of which community psychology is an elective specialization) and will acquire your master’s degree along the way. As a result, it will likely take longer than a typical graduate program to complete your coursework, fieldwork, capstone project, and doctoral dissertation.

While specific course requirements vary by program, the core curriculum offerings for community psychology graduate degrees provide foundations in:

  • Social psychology
  • Advanced research methods
  • Community development
  • Organizational structure and development
  • Intervention and social change
  • Prevention theories and practices
  • Empowerment theories and practices
  • Personal development
  • Social justice
  • Health psychology

Degree programs in community psychology also place a strong emphasis on connecting the theoretical with the practical through field work or internships with local agencies and organizations, so it’s best to prepare for a significant amount of clinical research alongside your coursework.

Most graduate programs that offer clinical psychology degrees post course offerings online. Carefully reviewing a program’s curriculum will give you a sense of how your graduate education will be structured and what you can expect to learn. Comparing curricula will also help you determine which program may be the best fit for your interests.

Community Psychology Grad Programs on Idealist

What can i do with a graduate degree in community psychology.

With a graduate degree in community psychology, you can prepare for and transition into work as an educator, professor, program director, consultant, policy developer, evaluator, or researcher. Your experience will qualify you for a variety of roles in organizations, universities, or government agencies that promote public health and well-being.

Job titles that you may qualify for with a graduate degree in community psychology include:

  • Director of a community service agency
  • Evaluator of community programs, policies, and grants
  • Self-employed consultant to community development organizations, or program evaluator
  • Public policy analyst
  • Charitable foundation director
  • Community or neighborhood council advisor
  • Health prevention researcher/community health program implementer

  • Grassroots organizer
  • Professor at a college or university
  • Researcher at a university-based research center
  • Director of research at a mental health center or community based organization
  • Consultant on quality of life issues/relationship to larger community

Job listings will rarely note that they’re looking for a community psychologist in particular. Instead, you’ll see opportunities across sectors such as mental health, public health, community development, government consulting, nonprofit management, and research institutions that you’ll have the unique experience and expertise to fill. The possible applications of your skills as a community psychology graduate are wide-ranging, so you’ll be able to find the perfect fit no matter your particular area of interest.

What are the degree options for community psychology?

Many universities offer master of arts or master of science degrees in psychology, clinical psychology, or forensic psychology, and provide opportunities for students to specialize in community psychology via accreditation or certification courses. However, there are a number of community psychology-specific degree options, including:

Master of science in community psychology : This is the ideal degree if you’re interested in becoming a licensed mental health counselor at a school or hospital, and are focused on the interrelation between the well-being of a community and the individuals that make up that community.

Master of arts in community psychology and master of arts in clinical community psychology : If you’re looking to learn the empirical and theoretical foundations of psychology and apply it to community development and public activism in a variety of settings including community, clinical, and educational institutions, this is the degree option for you.

PhD in community psychology and PhD in clinical-community psychology: A PhD track is your best option if your interests are in scholarly research, and assuming leadership roles in organizations and institutions dedicated to social justice and community well-being.

Clinical Health Psychology PhD Program

Mission statement.

The mission of the Clinical Health Psychology (CHP) program is to train Scientist-Practitioners who receive a generalist-training in clinical psychology, and who acquire additional knowledge and skill in health psychology and behavioral medicine. We promote a practice of clinical psychology that is evidence-based and integrates the findings of relevant scientific research. We encourage our students to engage in both research and clinical work, and to use critical analysis of the empirical literature to inform their clinical interventions. Our graduates are trained to function in a complex, diverse, and pluralistic society, emphasizing ethical principles and developing knowledge and respect for individual, group, and cultural differences.

Program Director : Amy Wachholtz, PhD

Program Assistant : Kimberly Hill , Ph.D.

CHP Admissions:   [email protected]

CU Denver and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences have provided clear statements that we must stand together against racism and injustice. The Clinical Health Psychology program is aligned with these values. Please find here a helpful site of resources regarding racial justice.

The Psychology Department at CU Denver offers a Doctor of Philosophy degree (PhD) with an emphasis in Clinical Health Psychology (CHP). We are accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA) since 2016 (APA, Office of Program Consultation and Accreditation, 750 1st St. NE, Washington, DC 20002-4242; 202.336.5979). Our next site visit is Winter/Spring 2024.  Our program adheres to the scientist-practitioner model. Training emphasizes the contribution of research to the understanding, treatment and prevention of a wide range of health-related concerns, and the application of knowledge that is grounded in scientific evidence.

In the CHP program, students are trained in a variety of approaches and techniques for evaluating, diagnosing and treating a wide range of psychological problems. Because our program places an emphasis on health, our students are also trained to assess the psychological factors associated with different medical conditions and learn to design effective interventions that integrate biological, psychological and social (including cultural) factors. Students acquire research expertise by completing a master's thesis and doctoral dissertation and demonstrate competence in clinical assessment and intervention through several applied practica experiences, a clinical competency evaluation, and a pre-doctoral internship. With this broad and intense model of training, our students have gone on to diverse professional postdoctoral fellowships and professional careers. Examples of research opportunities, clinical training opportunities, and post graduate experiences for our students can be found here.

CU Denver is a premier research university in Colorado and the PhD program in CHP was conceived as an important bridge between the Downtown Campus and the Anschutz Medical Campus (AMC).  The program is housed on the Downtown Campus which is located in the heart of Denver close to the Denver Center for the Performing Arts, the LoDo District and the state capital.  The Anschutz Medical Campus includes over 5 million square feet of research, educational and clinical space on 227 acres.  The PhD program offers research and clinical opportunities for its students at AMC in addition to the many relationships it has established with other clinical facilities in the Denver area.

The University of Colorado Denver’s CHP program is committed to diversity and fostering inclusion; one in which all individuals- whether from underrepresented, represented, or well represented groups- feel uniquely esteemed, valued and respected.  As psychologists, we understand that a culture of inclusion encourages diverse perspectives and makes our program and students stronger. This is part of our mission to equip future researchers and clinicians to be culturally competent and responsive as they engage in the science and practice of psychology.  Cultural competence and responsiveness in both research and clinical practice is strongly emphasized in our curriculum, clinical training, research, and numerous events in both the University and Denver communities. In our large urban setting, students in our program have excellent opportunities in to expand their research and clinical experience in with regard to diverse and underserved populations, including opportunities in bilingual training. Moreover, students and faculty in the program have a wide range of research interests, including research focused on neurodiversity, varying developmental periods, religious diversity, military couples, physical ability and addiction status, and health and healthcare disparities. Student research regarding diversity is encouraged. Applicants and current students can click the link below for more information about diversity programs at CU Denver.
