1) Center for Talented Youth (CTY) Honors Biology 

Hosting institution: Johns Hopkins University

This is an online research course where students will learn complex biological concepts in an online environment. It is great for students who are getting ready for AP biology. Students will explore the structures, functions, and processes of living organisms and their interactions with the environment. This program offers a rare opportunity to participate in a research project in one of the biomedical courses under the guidance of a full-time MD Anderson Cancer Center faculty member. Students will learn the importance of basic principles that form the basis of scientific research. Selected students will work in the MD Anderson labs during the week, participating in hands-on research. Students will walk away from the experience with a clear understanding of what it means and what it’s like to be a researcher in the biomedical sciences. This is a 7-week intensive program that offers selected students the chance to work with professors at Texas Tech’s General Health Sciences Center. This program is research-based, but it also exposes students to weekly seminars, discussion sections, as well as field trips.

6) Pre-College Scholars Residential-Track Program

8) Provost’s Summer Mentorship Program (SMP)

The Summer Mentorship Program (SMP) is a flagship program from the University of Pennsylvania’s Vice Provost for Student Engagement (VPSE) division. It is designed to expose first-generation college students to rigorous academic research. Only students studying in high schools in Philadelphia are eligible. In this 4-week immersion summer program, participating students are paired with one of five affiliate University of Pennsylvania Professional Schools.

9) Clinical Neuroscience Immersion Experience (CNI-X)

Hosting institution: Stanford University

This 10-day program provides students with basic exposure to the study of neuroscience, psychiatry and brain science in addition to a potential chance to finish a cooperative capstone project. 4 Biology Project Ideas for High School Students

Biology Projects are great teaching tools educators can use to boost student interest in the subject and spark classroom participation.

Testing plants and gravity

Testing root growth in relationship to gravity is a fun and simple idea. To do this, students need to cut a strip of paper towel approximately one inch wide. Then, they lay pinto beans on the strip and roll it up. Next, moisten the strip and tape it to a square of cardboard, placing the entire thing in a zip top bag. Finally, place it in a warm window and observe over time and look for roots and stems to sprout.

Once the roots and stems sprout, students will notice that the sprouts point up and the roots point down. After making this observation, students should turn the bag so the plant is growing sideways, then upside down, continuing to observe root growth with these changes

Fruit flies and tea

Tea is often offered as a healthful drink, but which tea is the most healthful? This project tries to answer that. To set up the fruit fly and tea experiment, students must create a mixture of tea and fruit fly food. This works best when students choose four different teas to test four different groups of flies. A fifth group — the control group — will receive fruit fly food with plain water. The tea should be brewed by seeping a tea bag in three tablespoons of boiling water for a set period of time. Then, it should be mixed with fruit fly food.

Once the food is prepared, it should be added to five separate vials. Then, each vial receives 10 adult fruit flies. Every day, the fruit flies that remain alive should be removed and transferred to a new vial that contains the same tea and food mixture. This should be repeated until all fruit flies have died. The student can then determine which food/tea mixture provided the greatest longevity to the flies.

Cleaning oil off birds

When birds are coated with oil after an oil spill, their life is at risk. This project will test a variety of solvents to determine which is the best to use in this situation. It uses feathers, not live birds, to make this determination.

The experiment begins with weighing several sets of feathers, then dipping bird feathers in oil. After the feathers are dipped, they are weighed again. This shows the weight of the oil on the feathers and serves as the means of measuring the effectiveness of the solvents.

Once they are all dipped and weighed, the feathers are washed in a range of cleaners, with one group remaining unwashed to serve as a control. After washing, the feathers are weighed yet again. This should indicate which solvent is the most effective, as the feathers washed in it will show the most oil weight loss.

Vitamin C and colds

Vitamin C is often offered as a solution to help prevent the common cold. This simple experiment helps determine if there is much fact to this common bit of advice. The student selects two groups of willing participants, preferably people who do not live in the same house. One group will agree to take a vitamin C tablet daily for a month, while the second will agree not to. All will record any cold symptoms they experience during that month.

At the end of the month, the groups will switch. After a second month, the data can be collected and analyzed to determine if taking vitamin C made a difference in cold symptoms.

High school level biology covers all aspects of biology, including animals, plant life and humans. That should mean it’s easy to come up with a science fair project or a classroom research project, but the amount of topics sometimes makes it even harder. When you first start researching, you’ll find thousands of ideas and it’s difficult to decide which one is best for your situation. Provided that you know what you want to do and what your teacher or judges are looking for, it’s easy to come up with a great biology experiment.

Effects on Plants

Test the effects of different substances on plants. Place plants from the same source in pots of the same size, then use different types of materials. You can test different types of potting soil against regular dirt or use the same type of potting soil and test other substances. Water the plants with different types of bottled water and tap water from your home and other homes or add a small amount of vinegar and other liquids to see how the plants react to those substances. Observe the effects of the different substances on the plants and measure how quickly each plant grows in comparison to the others.

Water Bottles

Test the amount of germs and toxins found when you refill a water bottle. Start by taking a sample swab from the outside lip of the bottle and looking at the water under a microscope for any bacteria or impurities. Then drink from the bottle as you otherwise would and test the bottle each time you refill it with extra water. Student athletes can even use the same plastic water bottles they carry with them to practice every day. Each time, you'll want to swab the inside lip of the bottle and look at the swab under a microscope. Identify any bacteria or toxins by looking at the examples found in your textbook.

Public Germs

You might be surprised when you check different public areas for germs. Take swabs at public bathrooms, in your classroom, on the door handles at stores and even books at the public library. Look at the swabs under a microscope and see what types of germs you find. Then offer a comparison of the germs and explain your findings. Discuss which germs are harmful and what levels of germs you found.

Do a biology experiment focusing on how the hair reacts to different types of products. Test shampoos, conditioners, hair gels, hair sprays and other products. Look for residue left behind by the product, but take a few sample hairs before you begin. Check the consistency and health of the sample hairs under a microscope and compare those results against hairs after using the products. Observe any changes you notice in the look or feel of your hair, as well. Then look for signs that the hair has become more damaged or healthier since you used the product. You’ll need to narrow it down to just a few products, but if you have more time, use one product for several days before switching to another.

When choosing a STEM activity for your high school Biology students, it can be a fine line between fun and corny. You’ll want to ensure you are meeting NGSS standards, but you also want your students to be engaged, informed, and most importantly, to have fun.

To help you achieve this goal, we have pulled together some ideas for  STEM projects for high school biology that we have used with students that were a success – organized by how much time you may be trying to fill.

Here’s how you can get your students engaged in Biology while meeting the goals of your curriculum and NGSS.

I Only Have 30 Minutes for the STEM Project!

If you only have 30 minutes for an activity, you’ll want that activity to really “wow” your students. So how about making it a hands-on lab with minimal setup or cleanup?

Our favorite is a Genetics activity that students really go crazy over where they discover what a SuperTaster is, and whether or not they carry the SuperTaster Gene. This activity leads to discussions about the Survival of the Fittest, Punnett Squares, and family pedigrees.

Here’s how it’s done: Students are given 4 small paper tabs (one at a time) containing either Control, PTC, Sodium Benzoate, and Thiourea. Each student should keep track of what each tastes like on a chart, as well as how it tastes for the entire class. Some students may find the paper’s taste strong (very bitter!) or like nothing at all. Hilarity ensues in the Genetics lab. You can purchase your own Supe rTaster Genetics Lab Kit and have fun with Genetics!

I Have 3 Days for the Biology Project

If you have three days to run your Biology project, we’ve found it’s best to start telling a story that carries students from day to day and gets them excited about what could happen tomorrow.

What’s more exciting than a mystery? By teaching students about Forensics, methods in Forensic Science such as Fingerprinting (fingerprint your students!), DNA, and PCR, your students will discover how scientists use Forensics in the real world. 

On Day 2, have your students figure out what type of fingerprints they all have, and make a class chart (this is important for Day 3). They should also learn how to read DNA Electrophoresis Bands, and practice with a worksheet . 

On Day 3, before class, you will need to contact one of your students ahead of time (in each class) and ask them to help you by providing clues for a mystery. Tell them that they have been chosen to be the “guilty” student, but they can’t give it away no matter what. They will provide you with:

  • Their fingerprint type – you can either take actual samples of their fingerprint or a fake printout of their type of fingerprint
  • Shoe print or shoe tracing on paper
  • Strand of their hair taped to paper

Strategically place each of the clues around the room and before the students come in, remove something obvious from the room like the flag and the like. In our class, we removed a beloved taxidermied duck.

Tell the students that one of their classmates is suspected to have stolen this item, but you need their help to figure out who. See if they can find the clues and guess who the guilty person is. They will need to compare the fingerprint to their class list to narrow it down, compare the hair sample to others in the class under a microscope, and look at the shoe print compared to all of the shoes students are wearing.

I’ve also had a surprise DNA sample as a tie-breaker to throw into the mix that lists multiple students in the class and they need to compare it to the known sample at the scene. In the past, students have really gotten into this, and have even turned the activity into a full-court trial with expert witnesses.

Ooh, I Have a 4th Day for my STEM Project in High School Biology!

Awesome, you are in for a treat!

You and your students should take what you started with Forensics a step farther and extract DNA from your own human cheek cells.   The process for this can be a little tricky and the experiment is a little finicky, but when it works, it’ll be AMAZING!

We’ve done this with mixed results and can attest that when they say your Ethanol needs to be cold, they aren’t kidding. It needs to be on ice the whole time! Also, you know your students. If you have students who aren’t the best at following directions exactly, then the strawberry or banana DNA extraction might be for you since they are a little more forgiving.

Think of the awe and admiration your students will have for you when you show them their DNA. Go for it, you amazing science wizard!

I Have 2 Weeks for this High School Biology Project! 

The best way that we’ve seen to get students to really remember content, is by making a movie about it. Not just any movie, but a stop motion animation video. Using iMovie, it’s really easy to make these, so hopefully, your students have iPads or iPhones.

If you haven’t made a stop motion animation video in iMovie before, there are lots of tutorials out there. But the basics are to make sure in iMovie after you drop your photos, get rid of Ken Burns Effect on all images, delete fade between pictures, and shorten all of the transitions in between pictures to the shortest time possible by selecting and dragging smaller.

If you can’t figure it out, don’t worry, your students will teach you. With our students, we’ve made stop motion videos on topics ranging from Protein Synthesis to Mitosis.

My school doesn’t have a lab or a very big budget. How can I do cool Biology projects without spending much money?

We’ve been there. In a deep ocean lesson, we have taught students about the decomposition of marine organisms on the seafloor by having them make a “slimy whale goo”. It was just cornstarch, water, and green food coloring, but they LOVED it. Doing any science, including Biology doesn’t have to cost a ton of money, it’s all about being creative. We have students draw… a lot. We also utilize full class projects, breaking up student tasks toward one goal which minimizes the total amount of needed materials!

Many schools are changing up their science fairs to STEM fairs, to encourage students with an interest in engineering to participate. Many great engineering science fair projects start with a STEM challenge, like those shown here. Use these ideas to spark a full-blown project to build something new and amazing!

Solve a current environmental issue

A science fair project can also be an entry to the Slingshot Challenge . Produce a 1-minute video by February 1, 2024, with a solution to a current environmental problem (think: uniting creative waste reducers on social media or rehabilitating forests affected by fire) for the chance to receive up to $10,000 in funding.

CAMBRIDGE, MA – The Institute of Politics at Harvard Kennedy School today announced the appointment of seven Resident Fellows and one Visiting Fellow who will join the IOP for the Spring 2024 semester. The fellows bring diverse experience in global politics, elected office, legal affairs, and journalism to address the challenges facing our country and world today. 

"We are incredibly excited to welcome this fantastic group of Fellows to Harvard to engage and collaborate with our students and community. We welcome their expertise, their insight, and their guidance as we gear up for a historic presidential campaign," said IOP Director Setti Warren . "I am confident that they will help to inspire our students to pursue careers in public service and prepare the next generation to provide impactful political leadership in the United States and around the world." 

"We are thrilled to have such a remarkable cohort of Fellows to the IOP this spring. They each bring diverse perspectives on how to best approach some of our country's – and our world's – most pressing challenges. Our students will undoubtedly have important conversations and gain valuable insight into an array of critical issues, and we couldn't be more excited to welcome them to Cambridge," said Michael Nutter , Chair of the Institute of Politics Senior Advisory Committee, and former Mayor of Philadelphia. 

"We are thrilled to welcome the incredibly accomplished members of the 2024 Spring Fellows Cohort as we begin the spring semester of an incredibly important year. Dubbed the ' biggest election year in history ,' democracy will be tested in 2024 as countries containing more than half of the world's population go to the polls. Nations globally are currently in the longest period of democratic backsliding on record . This year's elections, in the United States and abroad, will prove pivotal in determining whether reactionary, far-right actors continue to chip away at the rule of law or if the forces of liberalism will persist in upholding individual liberties and democratic norms — a key pillar of the Institute of Politics. These challenges bring with them no shortage of discussion topics, and our incoming cohort of Fellows brings with them decades of collective experience in journalism, policymaking, governing, and diplomacy. We are looking forward to a healthy, active, and productive semester of discussions at the Kennedy School to explore the multitude of challenges facing our world today and to equip students with the knowledge and ideas necessary to create a better tomorrow. The Fellows program remains a critical source of discussion across ideological boundaries, and one that we will work to keep strong in the face of intense polarization," said Éamon ÓCearúil '25 and Summer Tan '26, Co-Chairs of the Fellows and Study Groups Program at the Institute of Politics. 

IOP Resident Fellows are fully engaged with the Harvard community. They reside on campus, mentor a cohort of undergraduate students, hold weekly office hours, and lead an eight-week, not-for-credit study group based on their experience and expertise. Fellows will hold study groups on topics including diplomacy and statecraft, governing in a divided America, national political parties, judiciary affairs, and policy development. 

Visiting Fellows come to the IOP for a shorter stay and participate in a variety of comprehensive discussions, events, and programming.

Kostas Bakoyannis Dr. Kostas Bakoyannis served as Mayor of Athens from 2019 to 2023. Previously, he served as Governor of Central Greece from 2014 to 2019 and as Mayor of Karpenissi, from 2011 to 2014. Born in 1978 in Athens, he graduated from Millfield School (1996, UK), before attending Brown University (2000, USA) to study History and International Relations and continued with postgraduate studies in Public Policy, with a specialization in Macroeconomics, at Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government (2004). Bakoyannis also holds a D.Phil. in Political Science and International Relations, from the University of Oxford (2019, UK). He has worked at the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs and as executive manager in the private sector in Athens. He has also held positions in the European Parliament in Brussels and the World Bank in Kosovo. Bakoyannis is a council member of the European Council on Foreign Relations and a Greek Leadership Council member of the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN). In 2022, he was declared “Grand Officier de l'Ordre de la Couronne” by King Philippe of Belgium. He has served in Greek Special Forces as a Paratrooper, speaks Greek, English, and German.

"It is a privilege to return to the Kennedy School and join the IOP. In an increasingly complex and dynamic world of multiple and overlapping crises, it has become vital to tackle global issues drawing from the local perspective. I look forward to discussing bottom-up crisis management, sharing experiences, working with faculty and staff, and particularly learning from the leaders of tomorrow," said Dr. Bakoyannis.

Jeff Denham Jeff Denham is a former member of the U.S. House of Representatives, having served four terms, from 2011-2019, representing California’s 10th and formerly 19th districts. As a member of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, he served as chairman of the Subcommittee on Railroads, Pipelines, and Hazardous Materials and the Agriculture, Natural Resources, and Veterans’ Affairs Committees. From 2002 to 2010, Denham was a member of the California State Senate, representing the state’s 12th District. He was chairman of the Agriculture and Veterans’ Affairs Committees and focused on such issues as education, government waste, agriculture, and economic development. A staff sergeant in the U.S. Air Force, Denham served in Operation Desert Storm with the 452nd Air Force Refueling Wing and was awarded a Meritorious Service Medal, the Kuwait Liberation Medal and various campaign medals for combat duty.

"I look forward to contributing to the academic environment by sharing my political expertise and experiences. The lectures will include guests who add a political perspective and dialogue to critical topics, both current and future predictions," said Congressman Denham.

John Bel Edwards John Bel Edwards served as the 56th Governor of Louisiana from 2016 until January 2024. In 2008, he was elected to the Louisiana House of Representatives, where he represented the people of Amite, Greensburg, Kentwood, and Hammond for eight years before being elected governor. Edwards attended the United States Military Academy at West Point. As a cadet, he completed Airborne School and served as vice-chairman of the panel that enforces the West Point Honor Code. The governor graduated from West Point in 1988, commissioning as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army. He served on active duty for 8 years, earning Airborne, Ranger, and Jumpmaster status, culminating with command of a rifle company in the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He earned his J.D. from LSU Law Center in 1999.

"I am honored to come to Cambridge this spring and join the IOP as a Visiting Fellow. I look forward to collaborating with the next generation of political leaders, and to working together to share ideas and imagine solutions to some the nation's most pressing challenges," said Governor Edwards.

Josh Gerstein Josh Gerstein (Harvard College ’91) is a senior legal affairs reporter for POLITICO, where he chronicles the increasingly seismic impact of the legal system on American politics and policy. In 2022, Gerstein co-authored POLITICO’s award-winning exclusive on the Supreme Court’s draft opinion overturning the federal constitutional right to abortion established in Roe v. Wade—a groundbreaking story widely credited with ushering in a new era in more aggressive, accountability-focused coverage of the nation’s highest court. Gerstein has taken readers inside some of the most politically-charged trials and legal showdowns of the past several decades, including the four unprecedented criminal cases dogging former President Donald Trump as he tries to return to the White House. After cutting his teeth at the Crimson chasing candidates for the Harvard presidency and the occasional wayward Saudi prince, Gerstein spent the early part of his career working for CNN’s investigative unit, as a national reporter for the New York Sun, and as a White House correspondent and China correspondent for ABC. He also spent almost a full year on the road as an embed for ABC on the 1996 presidential campaign of Sen. Bob Dole and did several tours in Afghanistan after 9/11 reporting for Nightline and other programs.

"As we face our first presidential election poised to play out as much in the courtroom as on the campaign trail, I’m delighted to be joining the IOP to explore and reflect on the implications of this shift and how it is changing the way politicians and other policymakers approach both elections and governing," Gerstein said. "I’m eager to engage with an impressive and diverse group of fellows, along with scholars and students, about the forces behind the legal realm’s growing incursion into the political sphere, as well as the wisdom and practicality of proposals to curb this trend."

William Hurd The Honorable Will Hurd, a San Antonio native with a Computer Science degree from Texas A&M, has been a CIA officer, cybersecurity executive, congressman, artificial intelligence policy pioneer, author, investment banker, and presidential candidate. In his 20s serving overseas with the CIA, he thwarted terror threats. In his 30s, he helped build FusionX to combat cyber adversaries, and in Congress, he addressed critical national issues from AI to the New Cold War with China. In his 40s, as a Managing Director at Allen & Company, a board member of OpenAI, and a trustee of the German Marshall Fund he was at the center of technology, national security, and public policy. As a presidential candidate, he introduced innovative AI and border policies. Known for his love of movies, Tex-Mex, and his wife, Will is celebrated as a transformative leader, dedicated to securing a better future for everyone.

"If we are going to keep this experiment called America succeeding for another 247 years then we need our future leaders to have a thirst for public service. By sharing a different perspective forged from my unique experiences, I hope to show the students at Harvard how to pursue a life of public service and why they should," said Congressman Hurd.

Alison King Alison King is an award-winning journalist with more than 30 years of experience in the broadcasting industry. She spent most of her career covering politics in New England including leading the local, state, and regional political coverage for NBC Boston/NECN from 1995 until her retirement from TV in March 2023. She has covered seven presidential elections and interviewed every Republican and Democratic presidential candidate since 1996. King has also reported and produced three documentaries, including one about the late Massachusetts Senator Ted Kennedy and former Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick. Most recently, she executive produced and reported on an 11-part docu-series, “Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of New Hampshire,” which chronicles the Free State Project and the efforts by libertarians nationwide to settle in New Hampshire to create a libertarian Utopia. King has won several awards for her reporting including from the Emmys, Gracies and Associated Press. She also contributed to the collection of stories that won NECN a Dupont award. King received her Bachelor of Arts in English from Colgate University and a Master of Arts in Journalism from New York University. She and her husband live in Boston and have two children. King will hold a separate, concurrent research fellowship at the Shorenstein Center on Media, Politics and Public Policy at HKS, where she will research and publish on the impact of the collapse of local political news on the conduct of presidential primary campaigns.

"After covering dozens of IOP events over the years and interviewing multiple fellows, I'm thrilled to be joining the IOP as a fellow myself. I look forward to sharing what I’ve learned covering politics for three decades including seven Presidential primaries - especially as the 2024 election is playing out. I’m also excited to interact with and learn from our future leaders - the students," said King.

Grisella M. Martinez Grisella M. Martinez is a respected and trusted leader on Congressional policy and political matters on Capitol Hill and the White House. She most recently served as Director of Legislative Affairs for Vice President Kamala D. Harris in the Biden-Harris Administration. She was the most senior Latina on the Vice President’s team and the first Latina to hold this role for a Democratic Vice President. She has worked in policymaking and politics for over fifteen years. Some of her previous roles include Chief of Staff to Rep. Ruben Gallego (AZ-03); Vice President of Government Relations at the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB); and Policy Director for House Democratic Caucus Chairman Xavier Becerra (CA-34). Martinez began her career in immigration law and non-profit advocacy and holds an LL.M. from Washington College of Law at American University, a J.D. from the Catholic University of America Columbus School of Law, and a B.A. in English and Political Science from James Madison University.

Public service is one of the most rewarding, complex and impactful careers one can have, and I’m looking forward to sharing my unique perspectives and experience with students about politics, policymaking and elections as they consider their own futures and help shape ours," said Martinez.

Erika Mouynes Minister Erika Mouynes, a diplomat and senior business executive, is the Atlantic Council's Latin-American Center Chair. She brings over two decades of high-level government and private sector experience. She has held several high-ranking governmental positions, practiced as a senior attorney in a top global law firm, and been responsible for executive management of the business and legal affairs of a multi-billion investment company on Wall Street. As Panama's Minister of Foreign Affairs, she achieved notable "first female" milestones for the Latin-American region and received distinctions for her unwavering commitment to empowering women. As Chief Diplomat, she earned recognition by brokering global alliances to protect the largest Pacific marine corridor, contributing to the protection of global biodiversity. During her roles in the private sector, she provided strategic counsel on intricate corporate transactions, including cross-border infrastructure and investment projects in emerging markets. She graduated with honors from Panama, receiving a law degree from the University of Santa Maria La Antigua and a bachelor's degree in Business from the Latin-American University of Science and Technology. She received a postgraduate certificate in Business and a Master of Laws from New York University and a Master of Laws from the University of California, Berkeley. She is a fellow of the Advance Leadership Initiative of Harvard University.

"In a year where half of the planet’s population will hold elections in a context defined by geopolitical tensions and multiple ongoing crises, it is a unique opportunity to have a frank dialogue on critical drivers of the elections globally and the role of foreign diplomacy," said Mouynes.
