Cobra Movie Review: Vikram is solid, but the plot is all over the place

Rating: ( 2.5 / 5).

Hardly 15 minutes into the three-hour, three-minute, and three-second Cobra , the film has taken us to 13-odd locations. We see a couple of high-profile assassinations take place. We move across Odisha, Scotland, France, London, Kolkata, and within seven minutes of his appearance on screen, Vikram, who plays Madhi, a mathematical genius moonlighting as an assassin-for-hire, is shown in at least six different get-ups. It is clear director Ajay Gnanamuthu, much like the protagonist of his film, Cobra , loves numbers and puzzles. But in his attempt to give us a grand film that is a marriage of a clever thriller and a poignant emotional drama, Ajay only musters a half-decent film that slithers to a tame end.

Director: Ajay Gnanamuthu

Cast: Vikram, Srinidhi Shetty, Roshan Mathew, Anandraj

Cobra wants to be a lot of things but lacks the writing to pull it all off. After an initial buildup about Madhi’s mathematical prowess in executing outlandish assassinations halfway across the world from his nondescript house in Chennai, we barely see him exercise such brilliance again. Yes, he wriggles out of some tight corners, but what about the mathematical part of it? If that’s not really needed, how is he any different from our Ethan Hunts and Agent Vikrams who ace action without caring about Pythagoras or Euclid. It is a shame that Ajay doesn’t really flesh out this ‘math genius’ aspect of his protagonist. This could have been forgiven had the other aspects of Cobra really came together to give us a gripping film. The central plot of a mathematical genius/assassin meeting his match with a world-is-mine villain, an uber-smart Interpol officer, and one surprise villain does have the makings of a fun exercise… But the stars don’t quite align here.

Let’s take the case of the caricaturish villain, Rajiv Rishi, who is played in the most outlandish way by Roshan Mathew. It is a role that seems like a cross between Siddharth Abhimanyu and Harley Quinn. He exudes manic energy that is hard to watch because the role is all fluff and no substance. Irfan Pathan plays an Interpol officer, Aslan, and is not bad at all, and it is nice to see someone try so hard with the Tamil dialogues. Points to Ajay Gnanamuthu for giving Aslan enough high moments to save him from becoming, say, someone like Aryan from Vivegam.

Similarly, Ajay neatly weaves in the women — Srinidhi Shetty, Meenakshi Govindarajan, and Mirnalini Ravi — into the story. However, though the scenes show potential, the dialogues are trite and the performances, contrived. These dips in the narrative take away from the highs of the assassination portions. The surprise package is definitely the roles played by Anandaraj, Mohammad Ali Baig, Miya George, and the actor who plays the childhood version of Vikram. These portions, powered by a terrific Vikram, are a hoot. It is such a relief from the other sequences that oscillate between vapid and exciting and nothing in between.

Despite what happens to a host of characters or plot points in the film, there is no doubt that Cobra is only about one man… Vikram, and his fascination for characters that allow him to satiate his love for prosthetics. It is a Vikram show through and through, and it is understandable why the actor felt so strongly about this film. Ajay peppers this film with a host of bright, bold, and interesting ideas, even if they don’t always hit the bull’s eye with their execution. AR Rahman’s background score (barring that grating pathos BGM) and solid songs aid the narrative, which jumps across timelines at the same pace that it jumps across continents.

This non-linear approach and throwing bits and pieces of information hoping that the latter half will resolve all these issues is a tough sell. The plot gets convoluted, and the glimmers of brilliance get offset by the forced romance and exposition. With a premise like this, and a bunch of convenient plot twists that remind us of a few films, including a blockbuster Hindi film from the recent past, Cobra ticks almost all the boxes we have recently come to expect from a Vikram-starrer, including the disappointment of the actor being the brightest star in a rather middling film.

Cobra movie review: Vikram-starrer gets predictable in the end, despite stretches of brilliance

Cobra movie review: the film needed better casting. apart from vikram, who shines, the rest of the support cast barely makes an impact. the tamil film also stars srinidhi shetty, roshan mathew and irfan pathan..

Ajay Gnanamuthu’s Cobra is the kind of film you want to appreciate as well as find faults with. It deserves to be praised because it gives Vikram his most ambitious film in recent years, and the star has so much fun playing a role that doesn’t scream hero. For most part of the film, it’s a character that demands a restrained performance and it’s something that comes naturally to him. The reason why you want to find fault with the film is because of its needlessly stretched run-time, which gets quite tiresome after a point. Read more: Vikram reacts to 'boycott Bollywood' calls, says he doesn't understand it

Cobra movie review: It’s Vikram, who shoulders the film all the way.

A series of assassinations of some of the top leaders of the world has given sleepless nights to Turkish Interpol officer, Aslan ( Irfan Pathan ). With the help of a criminology student from Chennai, Aslan finds out that a criminal named Cobra is responsible for all the assassinations, but his identity remains a mystery. Aslan travels to Chennai to work with the local police to nab the killer. Vikram plays Mathiazhagan, a genius mathematician who lives the life of a recluse. Aslan’s investigation reveals that Cobra could also be a mathematics genius and suddenly all the clues point fingers towards Mathi, who gets involved in the case. Is Mathi really Cobra? And if yes, why is he on a killing spree? This forms the crux of the plot.

Cobra being too ambitious is both a boon as well as bane. The ambitiousness shows off in the film’s attempt to push the scale in terms of grandeur, which is visible in most of the first half. It is also visible in the writing, especially when the film uses theories from mathematics to make the crimes very interesting. Unfortunately, the stretches of brilliance are short-lived as the film does get predictable towards the end. There are instances where the film tries too hard to look ambitious, and this is also one of the reasons why the narrative after a plot twist never holds up.

The film definitely needed better casting. Apart from Vikram, who shines in yet another hand-picked, the rest of the support cast barely makes any impact. Roshan Mathew, who is generally effortless and quite convincing so far in his career, hams it up big time in a largely annoying negative role. It’s a poorly written character that turns irksome after a point.

Then, there’s former cricketer Irfan Pathan, who starts off as the lead investigating officer of the case, but slowly gets sidelined to become useless. Also, it is annoying to see actors, who have their lines dubbed in Tamil , when you clearly know their lip-sync is so off. It’s Vikram, who shoulders the film all the way.

Cobra could’ve been a far more effective thriller if it wasn’t so long. It could’ve also done away with the highly boring romantic track, which hardly helps in keeping the audiences engaged.

Cobra movie review: Vikram gets ready to strike, but never goes for the kill

Cobra movie review: a film about a globetrotting assassin with a deep fascination for cosplay would be a lot of fun to watch if made properly. after ramping up the initial excitement, the film sinks..

cobra tamil movie review behindwoods

Are you watching closely? Director R Ajay Gnanamuthu is about to pull a rabbit out of a hat. See, there are the pointy ears, oh, that one looks like The Prestige. The adorable twin face… there’s nothing here that we haven’t already seen in Anniyan and Dasavatharam. There is a lot of excitement in the air but can this rabbit be more than just an ensemble of pop-cultural artefacts?

It’s a cardinal sin to use rabbit as a metaphor to discuss a movie named Cobra . However, after enduring this movie, I believe I’m allowed to have this much fun.

cobra tamil movie review behindwoods

The main draw of Cobra was Vikram appearing in multiple avatars, ranging in different looks, sizes and shapes. So Ajay kicks off the movie with what the audience wanted. The money is exchanged at a badly-lit parking spot in India to take out the king of Scotland, who is about to get married. We see the assassin Cobra, (Vikram), disguised as the top priest at the king’s church. In the following scene, which is about five minutes long, we see how our hero, the math genius, bumps off the king in a packed church, as he is guarded by gunmen. It’s one of the most incoherent scenes I have ever seen in a movie. We don’t get a sense of the culture or the tradition that’s shown on the screen, as everything is overwhelmed by a deafening background score that overlaps with dialogues.

It’s not just one scene, it’s the whole movie. Never thought there would be a day when AR Rahman’s music disturbed the flow of the film instead of to blending in with the scene and the pertaining emotion.

A film about a globetrotting assassin with a deep fascination for cosplay would be a lot of fun to watch if made properly. After ramping up the initial excitement, the film sinks. And it sinks further post-interval and it never recovers its ground even in the climax.

Festive offer

There is a scene in the police station where Vikram seems to try to enact a version of Ambi under interrogation. The film is trying to recreate the vibe of Dasavatharam, in which Kamal Haasan appeared in 10 get-ups, with Vikram’s shapeshifting talents. But, it’s just not enough. The writing is poor, especially when it comes to writing emotional scenes. It’s very hard to buy the sob tragic stories of twin brothers and star-crossed lovers in this day and age.

One good thing about Cobra is that it gives Srinidhi Shetty scope to perform as Bhavana Menon; a bigger chance than what she got in the two KGF movies. Irfan Pathan as Aslan Yilmaz is a classic stock character and doesn’t amount to much. So does the young math enthusiast played by Meenakshi Govindarajan. She talks a lot in the movie but she adds no value to the narrative or our movie-watching experience.

Cobra movie review: A thriller that should have just remained fun

Cobra falls somewhere between watchable and could-have-been-better.

Cobra movie review: A thriller that should have just remained fun

The first hour of Cobra is excellent. Vikram wears various disguises to kill various people in various countries. He plays to the gallery in most of these scenes and revels in the skins of people that we’ll only be able to slightly recognize. It must have taken a lot of effort and time to stick those thick beards down his chin, though. And if he wears a paunch for some missions, he wears a laugh that sets him apart from the locals that look like him for others. In short, he does an Anniyan without becoming an Anniyan.

Madhi (Vikram) doesn’t use a mobile phone. He doesn’t believe in modern technology unless it’s a weapon that he can store in the folds of his sleeve. And when he’s not globetrotting, he teaches math to school kids. Does it look like a dream job?

Cobra has the touches of a well-nourished action thriller. There are guns everywhere, a rich baddie (played by Roshan Mathew) who struts around in bathrobes and suits, and a handler (played by K. S. Ravikumar) who doubles up as Madhi’s mentor. Although the hero seems to operate as a one-man army, he gets instructions from his handler without whom he’d be regarded as nothing more than a mathematical genius.

Madhi definitely has a lot to be happy about. He never buckles under pressure despite being cornered, but there’s something else that keeps pulling him down. As long as director Ajay Gnanamuthu takes Vikram around the world, things appear fun. Aslan ( Irfan Pathan ), an Interpol officer, who’s given the task of nabbing the killer, doesn’t pose any danger to the protagonist. So, Madhi is totally free to do whatever he wants. Aslan is a talker, not a doer. You never see him connect the dots, or come up with a delicious strategy to set a trap for his bête noire. Why would anybody give him this important case in which most of the victims are politicians?

I get the idea that Aslan isn’t the one we’re supposed to be invested in. He’s just another cop who can’t think out of the box. His incompetence isn’t shocking, but it is, nevertheless, a sore point. And Rishi, the rich baddie is an arrogant man who has no ethics. He’s a villain for the sake of being a villain. Madhi, therefore, is the sole character whose graph is interesting. But he’s a good guy at the end of the day. He’s not a very good guy. He’s still a killer, but he reroutes the money he makes from the killings to charities.

Perhaps, Gnanamuthu divides his supporting characters into two categories: black and white. And the grey character that remains on the stage is the protagonist. Madhi could have bought an island somewhere and called it his holiday home. But that would have made him selfish. He could have married the love of his life, Bhavana ( Srinidhi Shetty ), without waiting for the approval of her family members. But that would have again made him selfish.

Madhi is an orphan and Bhavana’s folks aren’t comfortable with that. They humiliate him with lines that feel like daggers. And yet, he keeps his anger in check. That’s because he’s a good guy. These situations don’t pop up in refreshing ways. They’re quite formulaic. But Vikram’s performance is earnest. And so is A. R. Rahman ’s music.

Holy moly, what a fantastic album Rahman has given us. The songs are wonderfully shot, too, and they make the viewing experience all the more rewarding. But Gnanamuthu brings in a new plot halfway into Cobra and changes the dynamic between the protagonist and the antagonist. He throws a dice that contains another villain. And it arrives at the point of the interval. It’s the bang that the makers of thrillers bank on usually to get their viewers excited. But when it makes way for a sentimental portion that involves an honor killing and a misunderstanding, the cards go back to their places.

I wouldn’t have minded if Cobra had delved deeper into the Bhavana-and-Madhi story. Why does she want to be with him so much? She constantly talks about leaving her family behind to be with him. She would have surely weighed the odds before saying that out loud. How did she do it, though? The flashback episode in Anniyan (2005) is also dipped in melancholy, but it doesn’t affect the texture of the narration. Cobra, however, starts off as an amusing venture and moves toward the darker space without making the said darker space inhabitable.

Vikram has been having a rough time at the box office. Some of his recent releases are nightmares. But Cobra falls somewhere between watchable and could-have-been-better. I’ll take that, for now.

Cobra is playing in cinemas.

Vikram's Cobra trimmed by 20 minutes

After the movie release, it received mixed reviews on day 1. With a long weekend a head, the producers hoping for a massive box office hit, have now reduced the movie by 20 minutes. Making an official statement indicating that they have trimmed the movie, it read, "Any movie is a form of entertainment specifically curated to cheer audiences and make them enjoy the cinematic experience. It's of great happiness to the team if content delivered is worth the audience time and ticket money. We heard you! Cobra is now trimmed by 20 mins as suggested by film-goers, fans, our media friends, distributors & exhibtors. Now watch the trimmed version of Cobra from this evening in all shows across Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telagana, Karnataka and Kerala. Do watch in theatres and support."

"Except for #ChiyaanVikram's performance and few scenes there is nothing much for the audience. Length and shabby screenplay has affected it. A let down for the big expectation."
