Indiscipline among Secondary School Students and Ways of Curbing it

Secondary school is a crucial phase in the life of a student where they are not only acquiring knowledge but also developing their personality and character. However, in recent years the issue of indiscipline among secondary school students has become a cause for concern. It is not uncommon to hear stories of students engaging in acts of vandalism bullying substance abuse and even violence. This indiscipline not only affects the overall learning environment but also hinders students’ personal growth and future prospects.

Indiscipline among students can manifest in various ways. Some students may consistently skip classes or arrive late disrupting the flow of learning. Others may engage in disruptive behavior during class interrupting the teacher and distracting fellow students. Then there are those who resort to violence or bullying creating a hostile and unsafe atmosphere. All these instances of indiscipline have long-term consequences for the students themselves as well as for their peers and the school community as a whole.

There are several underlying causes of indiscipline among secondary school students. One primary factor is the lack of proper guidance and supervision from parents or guardians. In many cases parents are too preoccupied with their own lives or neglectful of their children’s activities leaving them to their own devices. This lack of attention and guidance can result in students seeking their own path often leading to indiscipline.

This intense pressure can lead to stress anxiety and frustration among students making them more prone to indiscipline. It is imperative for schools to adopt a holistic approach to education considering the overall development of students’ physical mental and emotional well-being.

To curb the issue of indiscipline among secondary school students various measures can be implemented. Firstly there needs to be enhanced communication and collaboration between parents teachers and students. Regular parent-teacher meetings should be conducted to discuss student progress and any behavioral concerns. Parents should be actively involved in their child’s life providing guidance and support.

Additionally schools should prioritize character development and impart values such as respect empathy and responsibility. This can be done through extracurricular activities community service projects and workshops on life skills. By instilling these values early on students will be more likely to exhibit disciplined behavior and make positive choices in their lives.

Creating a safe and inclusive school environment is also crucial in curbing indiscipline. Schools should have strict policies against bullying violence and substance abuse with a zero-tolerance approach. Teachers should undergo training on conflict resolution and classroom management techniques to effectively deal with disciplinary issues. Encouraging open communication and providing counseling services are also important in addressing the underlying problems that may lead to indiscipline.

Ultimately curbing indiscipline among secondary school students requires a collective effort from parents teachers and the education system as a whole. Let us work together to instill discipline and ensure that our secondary school students are well-prepared for the challenges that lie ahead.

2020 NECO English language Questions

2023 NECO English language Questions: The National Examinations Council (NECO) is an examination body in Nigeria that conducts the Senior Secondary Certificate Examination and the General Certificate in Education in June/July and December/January respectively.

The NECO English Paper I – III consists of multiple choice questions, all of which should be answered within 1 hour for 40 marks. Paper II will consist of five essay topics and a passage each to test candidates’ comprehension and summary skills. Candidates will be expected to write an essay on one of the topics and answer all the questions on Comprehension and Summary passages which carries 100 marks.

Finally, paper IV will consist of sixty multiple-choice items on the Test of Orals for candidates in Nigeria and Liberia, and on Listening Comprehension for candidates in Ghana, Gambia, and Sierra Leone. All the questions will be answered in 45 minutes for 30 marks.

PAPER II SECTION A CONTINUOUS  WRITING

You are to answer only  one  question from this section. All questions carry equal marks. Your answer should not be less than  450 words . You are advised to spend about  45 minutes  on this section.

1. Since the inception of social media in Nigeria, there has been a rise in cyberbullying and the distribution of fake news.  Write an article suitable for publication in a national newspaper on the need for Government to regulate social media.

2. There have been many articles recently in the newspapers criticizing trafficking in children. Write an article for publication in one of your national dailies, condemning this practice.

3. A friend of yours confided in you that she intends to drop out of school to get. Write a letter to her giving, at least, three reasons why she should stay in school.

4. Your school has been performing poorly in public examinations for the past three years. Write a letter to your principal suggesting ways of making students more interested in academic work.

5. Write a story to illustrate the saying: I killed two birds with one stone.

2020 NECO English language Questions

SECTION B COMPREHENSION

The passage was interesting. The subject matter was within the experience and grasp of the candidates and the information required for answering content questions correctly was very clear in the passage. Nevertheless, some of the candidates did not demonstrate a clear understanding of the passage. Such candidates simply resorted to copying portions of the passage as answers.

SECTION C (SUMMARY)

Important Note To Candidates:  Some candidates lifts whole sentences without modification and presented them as answers while writing the summary part of the exam. Candidates must learn to paraphrase and must be able to separate the main points from illustrations and examples in given sentences. Copying portions of the set passage verbatim without regard to what is asked is certainly not summary writing.

Also, some candidates used preambles that when taken with the points, did not make good sentences. Candidates who decide to use preambles must ensure that they do so correctly. Candidates must understand what the passage says and what the questions demand if they must tackle the summary questions successfully.

THE EFFECTS OF INDISCIPLINE: Unmanaged student indiscipline can have profound effects on the classroom. It can lead to further disruption and distraction, resulting in all pupils having a poorer learning experience and ultimately a lower academic performance. It can also create feelings of fear and general unease among other pupils and staff, discouraging effective communication and damaging morale.

CAUSES : 1. Lawlessness : When rules are not enforced students tend to misbehave. And where there is no law, there is no sin. Enforcement of law and order in schools instill discipline in students.

2. Lack of parents-children relationship or teacher-student relationship : One thing I have observed is that a student that enjoys a good relationship with his/her parents and teachers tend to be disciplined.

3. Unsatisfactory home condition: Some children are faced with a broken home, persistence quarrel or fight between their parents, etc. And these poor home conditions affect how they behave outside. Children from this home are prone to social vices.

SOLUTIONS : Remedy to indiscipline is a collective effort by all stakeholders. Parents, teachers, school owners, and students must be involved in putting an end to this act. Some of the solutions include : 1.Awarding well-behaved students : This is a way of influencing students to do what is right within and outside the school. Everyone loves praise and reward.

these problems: acid rain, the greenhouse effect, global warming, holes in the ozone layer, desertification, and

industrial pollution. We are changing our environment. More and more gases and wastes escape from our factories. Rubbish, oil silages

and detergents damage our rivers and seas. Forests give us timber and paper, but their loss results in soil erosion and

also endangers wildlife.

The richer countries of the world are mainly responsible for industrial pollution. This is where most of all the

commercial energy is produced. In developing countries, poverty cause people to change their environment,

overgraze grassland, cut down trees for new land and firewood, to farm poor soil for food.

The United Nations Environmental Protection Agency says that an area of forest the size of Sierra Leone disappears

every year. Trees are cut down for timber which is used for building, furniture, paper, and fuel. They are also

destroyed to provide land on which to graze animals and build new villages and towns. But trees have many other

important uses.

Trees protect the land from a heavy downpour of rain and their roots help to hold the soil together. Forests are also

the home of many living things. The Amazon forest contains one-fifth of all the species of birds in the world. In our

forests, there may be plants and animals which could help in the discovery of new medicines for crops.

To rescue and conserve our beautiful world, we must act cooperatively. Individuals, communities, nations, and

international associations, all have the responsibility. By learning to protect the natural environment, we can manage

the earth’s resources for generations to come.
